Monthly car sales slump to two-year low

HA NOI — The auto market last month saw the lowest sales volumes seen in two years, reported the Viet Nam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA).

Seventeen leading auto makers in the country sold 5,180 vehicles last month, down 33 per cent over the same period last year and 2,629 vehicles less than in August, it said.

According to the association, only Toyota had sales of more than 1,000 units last month. Six months ago, five companies reached that number.

The passenger-car segment led the figures down in September, with a 49 per cent decline year-on-year to 1,137 units, the lowest level since May 2007.

Sport Utility Vehicle and Multi Purpose Vehicle (SUV/MPV) saw a 28 per cent decline year-on-year to 1,130 units, the worst figures since April 2006.

Commercial vehicle sales also saw a 25 per cent decline year-on-year to 2,913 units.

"Severe economic recession and galloping inflation has impacted customers and negatively affected the auto market," said a representative from GM-Daewoo in Ha Noi.

In company rankings, Toyota topped the list with 1,226 units sold last month, followed by bus and truck maker Vinamotor with 771 units, GM-Daewoo brand Vidamco with 601 units and Truong Hai with 566 units.

Car ownership remains limited to the elite and emerging upper classes in Viet Nam. The country has more than 900,000 privately-owned cars and 21 million motorbikes.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Viet Nam has more than 40 auto makers and more than 100 auto-part makers with a total capacity of more than 200,000 units per year. —

i couldn't wait for the throwing up to stop. two minutes into my sleep, another cough, and i was at it again. this definitely wasn't the ending i visualised. in my mind, i've thought to myself, "i've been through worse", but my body knows otherwise. it strains to release something, nothing comes.. and i am just doing the motions. "what a way to spend the next day" i said to myself... i guess it was either that, or rush myself to hospital to get my stomach pumped. it's really the same thing, except the hospital, would have me surrunded by worrying parents and friends, as well as nosey pigs, wanting to know what i took, how many but more importantly who i got it from.

it was only 9pm when we returned, a relatively early night for us, who tend to leave the house at that time every other weekend. the beauty of festivals, is the early start and early finish, amongst other things of course, but the early finish, always gave way to great recovery, especially for the working crowd the next day. unfortunately for me, finishing earlier, meant more time to spend rugged up with the bathroom rug whilst hugging the cold and eventually warm toilet.

so here i was, 9 hours later, the same motions the same ending. the initial pleasant feeling that vomitting did the first time, had been erradicated, and i was left with dry reaching into the early hours of the morning. by this stage, i'm fuming inside and cursing my decisions to be so wreckless.

the consequences were never like this, or so i thought. i just know, that i've never suffered this much. and i can't complain because it's self inflicted. another stupid decision really. and for what? the few hours of dizzyness and rush? or the carefree attitude and the love that these things allow me to permeate through my body? the only reason i can think of, is because i wanted to. that's it. i wanted to. i wanted to make myself feel light, knowingly allowing myself to be open to the dark. the rules of physics apply in this, just as much as it does with a bouncing ball. and, the reaction, whether it was equal or not, was definitely opposite to what i had felt earlier during the day.

the next day, i lay on the couch, curled up in the foetal position, hoping that, that natural instinctive position, would make it better; no. everyone was around asking me if i was okay.. and of course i wasn't. my throat stung from the stretching, my stomach was empty barely filled by air, and my body ached from sleeping on everything else but a bed. overall, i was just thankful, i made it through the night.

would i do it again...? can i really pull away from this vicious circle?... i hope so.

Paint Types in House Painting

Choosing your paint is probably the most important thing you will do on your project. This is because most paints are designed for a specific purpose. Primer paints are designed to adhere to raw surfaces and then to stick to a protective coat over the top of it. In general, there are four types of raw surfaces that you might want to paint over, wood, masonry, drywall, and bare metal. You should be able to find a primer that will work on your bare surface. Do not be tempted to simply skip the primer coat as finish paints will sometimes not stick well to the surface, especially metals.

The big question for many painters is whether they should use oil or water based paints. Glossy oils tend to be more impermeable to water and will bubble up if the surface beneath is damp. Latex and other water based paints will make wallpaper peel. Industry experts have argued for a long time over which formula is better in general. For exterior applications, water-based paints have the upper hand. Besides allowing the house to breathe, they tend not to crack as readily. In addition, they have the great advantage of water clean up. In addition, if you are worried about the ultimate environmental impact, water-based paints tend to be friendlier to the eco-system. Oil paints usually have a stronger and more overpowering odor. You should always ventilate well when painting, but it will seem even more vital with oil-based paints.

Even so, oil is often the choice to make, especially when painting over a surface that was previously painted with an oil base. If you simply must use a water-based paint over an oil-based paint, you should sand down the finish then prime it so that the paints will adhere to each other.

Although the price is not always the best indicator of quality, it does serve as a good general guideline. Also, the warrantee on paint will indicate how long it is likely to last. Remember that even inexpensive paint is relatively cheap when compared to the amount of time it takes to apply it. Better to have a durable paint that lasts a few extra years than a cheap one that gives out in less than five years.

Pigments in paints also make a difference. Cheaper paints often have cheaper pigments, so they tend not to cover as well, requiring more than one coat. Here again labor is a factor. Two coats of a paint that costs you half as much, is really only doubling your labor. Yellows tend to be the fastest fading color. Titanium dioxide is reported to be the best pigment. If you are buying an expensive paint, be sure to check the can for this ingredient.

Solids are included in paints to thicken the coating. It is calculated as the percentage of the paint that finally adheres to the wall. Solids generally run more than 40 percent of the paint. Higher than 45 is considered good. Do not look for this item on the can, as it is not usually on the label. The solids and pigment are held together with binders. In an acrylic paint, you will want to have all-acrylic binders for exterior paint. For interior paints, this factor is not as important.

Oil and acrylic will both cover most exterior surfaces, but stucco is a special case. Be sure to use an elastomeric paint, which continues to cover small cracks that can develop. Old aluminum siding can be painted. The old paint should be removed and a coat of latex primer and an additional coat or two of exterior paint can then be applied for an acceptable and durable finish.

When you go into the paint store, you will be confronted with flat, satin, and glossy paints. You should use flat for general background surfaces that are not subject to much wear and tear. Satin is better in bathrooms and kitchens where you would like to be able to clean the surface repeatedly over the years. Glossy paints accentuate a surface and bring people's attention to it. It also tends to be easier to wipe clean. Use glossy paints on cabinets, banisters, some molding and places where little fingers are constantly smudging. Remember, though glossy paints are easier to clean, they tend to show imperfections in wood, drywall, etc.

It probably goes without saying that you should use exterior paints outside and interior paints on the inside. The fact is that exterior paints are designed to be more durable in the elements and interior paints are designed to adhere better to surfaces commonly found indoors. Recent years have brought about advancements in eco-friendly paints with zero or low VOCs. These are worth checking into especially for those who have health concerns or who frequently work with paint.

HA NOI — Limited cold storage space is hindering the development of the fisheries industry, especially in the tra and basa catfish sector, according to industry insiders.

General director of the An Giang Fisheries Import and Export Joint Stock Company (Agifish), Ngo Phuoc Hau, said the lack of cold storage was causing losses in the industry due to volatility in the global market. Hau explained that due to a shortage of space, domestic seafood exporters cannot wait for prices to rise, and have to export stock even if prices are low.

Hau said that cold storage space, especially in the Mekong Delta region - the country’s largest seafood aquaculture and processing area - was too small, most freezers in the area have a capacity of only 2,000 to 3,000 tonnes, with only a handful of larger 5,000 tonne freezers available.

In the past decade, the tra and basa catfish processing industry has expanded rapidly, and now has an annual output capacity of around 1 million tonnes. The seafood export industry expected to earn more than US$1 billion this year, according to the Ministry of Fisheries.

However, due to limited capital, processors have not invested in cold storage capacity.

For example, the Binh An Seafood Processing Plant in Southern Can Tho Province, one of the country’s leading seafood processors with a daily output of 300 tonnes, can only store 2,500 tonnes.

To deal with the shortage, catfish processors have begun to speed up investment, but cold storage space remains limited.

Vo Thanh Khon from the Binh An Seafood Processing Plant said his company was investing in cold storage with a capacity of 5,000 tonnes.

Agifish is also establishing a 10,000 tonne cold storage facility at Vam Cong Port, which, when completed, will be the largest in the Mekong Delta region.

However, Hau said the Mekong Delta region still needed more freezers with a capacity of 50,000 - 100,000 tonnes or more, which would help the seafood processing industry in dealing with price fluctuations.

Duong Nghia Quoc from the Viet Nam Fisheries Society said it was necessary to invest in catfish production and storage as seafood was a national strategic commodity.

Industry insiders estimated capital of roughly $1.5 to 2 million was needed to set up a 10,000 tonne cold storage facility. Government incentives were needed to justify such a large expense, they said.

To lure investment to build such facilities, Quoc recommended that the Government should apply investment incentive policies, including land lease tax and corporate income tax reductions.

It was also necessary to help investors with preferential loans from the Bank for Development Viet Nam, Quoc said. —

Ford Flex flopping?

Ford was hoping that its squared-off new crossover, the Flex, would be a runaway success in the vein of the 1986 Taurus. The Flex, which vaguely resembles the box that the aerodynamic Taurus came in, has seen falling sales in the last two months - not a good sign for a vehicle that has been on the market for four months.

Ford initially expected to sell up to 100,000 Flex crossovers per year, but with fewer than 2,000 sold last month (admittedly an especially weak month for the industry as a whole), Ford won’t meet that goal.

“It just isn’t the giant home run that Ford was expecting,” Art Spinella of CNW Marketing Research told the Detroit Free Press.

So why are sales so low? There is no one answer. Analysts naturally cite the currently soft overall market, but even then it’s rare to see a brand new vehicle stumble so quickly. The Flex isn’t particularly efficient or powerful - but it’s not unlike many other crossovers. In Leftlane’s review of the Flex, we liked the vehicle but suggested that the polarizing style will likely turn away buyers.

Will the Flex flop? Only time will tell. Stay tuned...

Yesterday: What an up! I started lectures yesterday, and unlike Friday I coped! The lectures seem really good and the people really nice. It properly exhausted me but was such a good day.

Today: Downer. I feel horrible. Cold and tired, got a headache and just feel so low. I wana cry and I've already had a panic attack. :-( Yeah...hopefully the day will pick up a little.

For those of us who like to get stoned and listen to spacey songs with lots of reverb...

...so continuing with my family's unhealthy fascination with K records artists(my daughter loudly cheers after every Kimya Dawson song on Alphabut), this new band they signed, Desolation Wilderness, really tickles my fancy. Is it anything new? No. Is it enjoyable? Absolutely.

I highly recommend this band if you like Mazzy Star, Hope Sandoval, the Velvet Underground's slow songs, The Clientele, Low, The Radio Dept's Pet Grief album, shoegazer music like Jesus and Mary Chain & My Bloody Valentine, or drugs. This also might be good music if you lived in a location that had lots of rainy days and grey skies(talking to you, Ali).

Come Over in Your Silver Car by the Desolation Wilderness: the album drops on Nov 4th on K Records and if you happen to be in Austin, they are playing on Nov 2nd at the Church of the Friendly Ghost with LAKE. I'm going to get a babysitter and check it out if I'm not playing a show that night myself(show pending).

OK, so the last part of that paragraph might have been hyperbole. But the point remains: It was tough to buy your first home. It's quite the process to begin with, but to have to compete with a seemingly endless set of other buyers made it feel next to impossible at times.

These days, however, the market for NYC apartments has become something akin to Goldilocks' porridge for first time buyers. It's not too hot, not too cold. Home values have stayed relatively steady over the past several months. Demand has dropped off just enough that first time buyers can spend a little more time getting to know the process, but not so much that buying is no longer a solid investment in many cases.

First-time buyers, of course, face other hurdles than just getting to know the process. They lack a track record with home loans, so, all things being equal, banks will consider them riskier investments than most potential buyers.

That part, at least, hasn't gotten any better recently. While mortgage rates remain quite low, the credit crunch and the press coverage of the subprime crisis has led most residential real estate lenders to tighten their lending standards, according to a recent report by the Federal Reserve.

Another thing that has helped first-time buyers recently: As the market has shifted away from being a seller's market, those with homes already that have to sell them first are at more of a disadvantage then they were when homes were selling like hotcakes. This has left first-time buyers who have been approved for a loan at a distinct advantage in the eyes of many sellers.
