After jointing the timber for the back, the next thing was to settle on a design. I wanted to design a shape that will make best use of the timber while retaining a compact shape. I started with an outline of a spoon-back mandolin, and then decided that it needed more body at the neck end.

My initial sketch was done straight on the timber

I used a hole saw to open the sound hole, and then used a wider hole saw to cut an annular groove for the sound hole decoration.

After toying with the notion of purfling, I decided on a different approach - I had earlier seen some fine copper powder and felt that would be a more creative approach. The copper is mixed with PVA and brushed into the groove.

It looks messy, but remember it is going to be sanded back, removing the surface copper, and preparing it to be varnished in place.

I know little of mandolin making, so I was wary of taking the thickness too low. I thicknessed the birdseye maple down to 4mm, and carefully sanded further down to almost half that - about 2.5mm.

And that is where I shall leave it for today.

Cheers
Jerry

A few weeks back I bought some padouk, some birdseye maple and some New Guinea silkwood and a couple of blocks of rosewood, at the Canberra “Timber and Working with Wood” show.

Today I have started work on the mandolin. I have a rosewood fingerboard from a broken mandolin, and machine heads from same, but this instrument is basically being built from scratch.

This evening I re-sawed the padouk board so I could book match the timber for the back. Using a jointer I prepared the edges and then thicknessed the boards down until they were identical. I matched up the grain pattern and glued them with hide glue – it’s not vegetarian but it’s the ideal glue for instruments. The board has been clamped and set aside for the glue to set.

I also re-sawed the birdseye maple, which I hope to use for the top – but it is difficult to get a good edge on it for gluing. However, it is reasonably wide, so I may just go for a one-piece top. The mando is designed for traveling and ideally it will fit into a backpack – like the pochette fiddle – it should be close to the shape of a spoon-back mandolin, with a hint of a reverse dimple, so it will actually be more of a guitar shape.

I was paging through the latest copy of the Woodworkers Journal ezine today and came across an article about a luthier called Austin Clark who is making quite a name for himself for the outstanding craftsmanship on his mandolins.

The Austin Clark mandolin site is packed with information about his mandolins - the F-style, two-point, and A-style - with gallery photos of each type, and an insight into his production methods through his slide show of workshop photos. Well worth checking out.

Hola.

[caption id="attachment_88" align="alignleft" width="225" caption="Frontal Blue Burst"][/caption]
[caption id="attachment_87" align="alignright" width="225" caption="Back of first Burst."][/caption]

Antes de seguir, un par de cosas;

Y mucha gente profesional dispuesta a ayudarte.

Ahora el primer paso;

¡OJO!, ¡He dicho humedecer no Empapar!

[caption id="attachment_86" align="alignnone" width="214" caption="Primer tinte "][/caption]

Hello World!

"The most Unloved", na verdade se chama "The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green"!

Why wait? you're ready to do this, no way, you can ever be stopped.

After I made my pochette fiddle, I realised that I was lacking a couple of key tools - in particular, I lacked curved soled luthier's planes to scallop down the sides of the belly rise, so I decided to do something about it at last.

I went on ebay and found a set of four lovely looking brass planes. But I wasn't sure of the finish, how well made they would be, and whether I could get used to using them.

I put in what I felt was a reasonable bargain bid. And sure enough I was beaten to it. The next morning, however, I woke and checked my email, and there was an email from the seller offering me a second chance to buy it at my last bid price as the other buyer had pulled out. So I took the plunge.

And when the planes arrived I was delighted. Not only are they of excellent quality, but I find them quite easy to use too. They will see a lot of use on my next pochette. The work with the grain or across it. But I may still look out for some serrated blades so they will plane in all directions equally well.

Many of you will have followed the making of my pochette fiddle, or backpacker fiddle and I have had

Many of you will have followed the making of my pochette fiddle, or backpacker fiddle and I have had a number of questions about how I might use a shoulder rest with it. This post is about my solution to that problem. As I built it, I had made no real provision for a shoulder rest, figuring I could get away with a small cushion or bean bag. But having traveled with it I found that I really needed a decent shoulder rest to avoid fatigue in my left hand.

So I thought about it and decided a simple solution would be best. I had some pine left over from making the ribs, and I figured that if I attached a rectangular plate with a small bolt and wing nut it would be able to swivel out of the way for traveling, but be quick to deploy for playing - and at the same time provide a really secure method of holding the instrument.

I also considered different people playing the instrument, so I wanted it easily adjustable.

I cut a piece of timber 200mm x 45mm x 5mm and rounded the corners with a sander. Then I selected a 3/8" bolt and found a washer, a rubber washer, a spring washer and a wing nut and put them aside.

I held the wooden slat with a shoulder rest attached up beneath the pochette in playing position and marked a central location 55mm from the end of the fiddle and drilled a 3/8" hole in the back of the pochette ready to receive the bolt.

I put the rubber washer on the bolt and carefully inserted it through a sound hole and into the drilled hole in the back, so that the head of the bolt was inside the fiddle.

I then drilled two 3/8" holes in the slat at 60mm and 90mm from one end and used a fret saw to join the two holes so there was now a 30mm slot in the slat.

I then attached it to the fiddle by gently holding the bolt, inserting the wooden slat and then fitting a plain washer and then the spring washer then the wing nut and tightened the slat in place. I then tried the shoulder rest. It was a big improvement, but I wanted more adjustment, so I ran a second slot perpendicular to one end of the slot to provide some lateral adjustment.

The principle is simple enough to see from the photos that I felt it didn't require detailed construction photos.

At some later point I may replace the wing nut with a brass knurled finger nut. Let me know what you think of this modification

Cheers

Aviat, aviat!

Professor Meyer's advice to young students, or older ones, you are never too late to learn. #1

Some time ago I mentioned in a blog the importance of having your bass set up correctly by a good luthier, with a properly rounded fingerboard. It will cost you, but will give you countless advantages over some of the also rans:- here is a good illustration.

Look up Gounod's opera "Faust". In the "Kermess" scene there are a few bars introduction before the famous waltz. The only way to even attempt to play this is all in the thumb position, which is easy if you have your bass set up properly. You put your thumb on the D octave and then sail away merrily all in one position whilst your colleagues are slithering up and down the fingerboard with no hope at all of getting all the notes.

No modern violin maker or ‘Luthier' has been able to match the qualities of the classical Cremonese violin-making families of Amati, Stradivari and Guarneri who flourished from c. 1600 to 1750. Only about seven hundred Stradivarius violins still exist from these times and they are the most sought after musical instruments in the world.

Enthusiasm for these instruments is not merely for the instrument's antique or novelty value; the sound of these violins is universally accepted as far superior to modern violins, in terms of quality of expressiveness and projection.

A new study by Berend C. Stoel and Terry M. Borman of Leiden University Medical Center in the The Netherlands & Borman Violins, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, has found that one of the key factors may be original raw material properties of the Maple and Spruce woods that were used. In particular, the density, or more specifically the variability of wood density at the growth ring level throughout the violin.

The consistency of growth ring density is related to consistency of the tree growth rates from the Spring through Autumn and modern woods do not seem to match the evenness of growth found in the 17th century wood.

If the density consistency is a major factor, then the reason for it, is as yet, not fully explained; variation in density may reflect differences in stiffness distributions, which could impact vibrational efficacy or may modify sound radiation via altered sound damping properties of the wood.

A part of the mystery of the Cremonese masterpieces may have revealed itself but don't expect modern violin makers to be reproducing this effect any time soon. The climatic reasons for subtle variations in growth ring density are not properly understood and would be practically impossible to replicate.

There are many videos online about guitar making. I have never made a guitar myself, but I was always interested in watching how people make these guitars.

I have found a series of videos at Youtube about Making an Acoustic Guitar. I'm sure you'll like these videos if you are wondering about guitar making topic.

I think guitar making is the combination of art and engineering. Guitar makers are called Luthiers.

Below are the most comprehensive videos about guitar making I could find online. Luthier Steve Dickie has recorded the journey of his guitar making, and here are the 29 videos (almost 10 minutes each):

1) Choosing the Materials & Tools for the Guitar

Luthier (Steve Dickie) explains the materials and tools he'll be using to make this steel string guitar. For the neck, mahogany wood will be used, for the heel part he'll also use a large block of mahogany and for the body he's chosen walnut.

2) Making the Neck of the Guitar Part 1

Yes, Cool Jobsters, I did give it my best shot today to find someone to tell us about his or her cool job, but alas my email box remains empty as of this moment. Rather than allow you to think I have neglected my corner of the blogosphere, and rather than tell another story about a cool job I've had (I'm saving those up for when I really need them!) I'm going to give you a list of the cool jobs that I'd most like to feature here in the near future.

Here they are in no particular order:

1. Sommelier

2. Taxidermist

3. Trauma surgeon

4. Celebrity Impersonator (I'd prefer Elvis, but I could live with Marilyn)

5. High School Chemistry Teacher

6. Rock musician

7. Farmer

8. Private Detective

9. Choreographer

10. Luthier

These are all cool jobs that interest me, and most of them are jobs that I've been attempting to feature on the site -- but for whatever reason I've been unable to make it happen. If you have one of these jobs, or know someone who does, or even know a friend of a friend of a guy who you think might have mentioned that he knows someone who has one of these occupations, please drop me a line at jimsmuse@comcast.net!

I do promise you something fun tomorrow, even if I have to run myself over and then interview the paramedics on the way to the hospital. How's that for devotion?
