The other day I was trying to write a blog while I had two conversations going on on msn (at the same time and in two different languages about two different subjects) and while I was waiting for an important email. So I checked my email account from time to time and deliberately did NOT log in on twitter, facebook or whatever because I knew I wouldn't be able to handle it. Unnecessary to mention that writing the blog didn't really work.

Today I have registered on friendfeed which is like a feedreader version mix of the facebook wall and homepage and everything else you want like delicious, twitter etc. Trying to add facebook to my friendfeed ended up in adding first friendfeed and then twitter to my facebook applications instead.

What seemed to be very practical at first sight turned into a communication overload when I was trying to tweet and use the facebook messenger at the same time. I also couldn't get to my direct twitter messages from facebook without having to log in on the regular twitter page too. I could have reached my dm via TwitterFox but that would have been another extra window to look at.

The facebook application system makes sense to me (and would even more if it offered the full range of possibilities without having to log in again in another window). But I wonder if you really could be able to realise everything that is going on if you had ALL your social media tools, blogs, feedreader and whatever IN ONE tool.

I just CANNOT follow if I have only three of them open at the same time!

All in one? But how on earth???

Am I already too old? I'm 36 now (okay 36 and more than a half). Look, I have grown up with old fashioned things like handwritten letters, in a time without mobile and computers. I know from my own experience what a taperecorder is and how you record things from the radio. And I know that Del Amitri's line "the needle returns to the start of the song" has nothing to do with drug addiction but with a record player!

Am I a perception-dinosaur?

Btw. a blind friend of mine checked blogs for accessibility for me the other day. He said that the validity of the code was no problem, reading blogposts either. BUT... all those links around them! He couldn't visually identify it was the widgets and sidebars he refered to. To him it was just an unmanageable flood of links. But honestly that's how I felt when I saw a blog for the first time. And I could SEE them as a list in the sidebar.

So where will it all end?

Will social media, internet, music, tv and whatever end up in the one final and total mashup where you can do and see everything at the same time? And even mobile? And would we be able to follow it at all? Can you still handle it?

I find myself looking continually for software that my mind thinks should be available, and in three or four flavors by now. I cannot see why we do not have a set of tools to bring all types of content into a mashup type of transform space where we can run rules and evaluate content before transforming it to use. What I specifically mean is why cant I grab say a REST web service and pass the required values and receive the return data (UI for the parameters and the return of course), once I have that; use the data to call other services (RSS, WS:, HTML, etc) And play with the data returns and write small scripts to invoke rules or a process flow (Call some other service) all in a WYSIWYG type space. I look to the mashup vendors thinking maybe Serena or someone will solve it - but no, them maybe TIBCO has something - No. I guess I wonder if I am the only one searching or if there are more of us groping in the dark for these solutions.

Customer acquisition continues to be a primary focus of most organizations. Whether in a start-up phase or a Fortune-ranked company, inclusive of most every industry including legal, healthcare, technology, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing and services, all have a desire and need to acquire new clients and customers. Done successfully, customer acquisition has proven to be one of the key factors in the success of an organization. If disappointing results are delivered the impact may be significant and potentially fatal.

Executives are searching for ways to open new doors, speed up their sales cycles, gain new clients and book more revenue. The economy is dictating that organizations do more with less. Globalization is creating more competition for customers. Large companies are moving down market while smaller companies are moving their focus up market. Traditional methods of client acquisition have been falling short for some time.

With the exponential growth of data available on the web, tools, strategies, process and techniques are available today that possess game-changing possibilities for those that embrace these developments and leverage this new information to enhance the processes used to obtain new clientele. Enterprise Intelligence, Social Media, Online Databases, Blogs, Mashups, Software delivered via the Web (SaaS), Cloud Computing, RSS feeds, Podcasts, Online Video and more provide a depth of actionable information and capabilities that, if harnessed, has the potential to alter the competitive landscape within a short period of time.

WIth a backdrop of over 20 years of active involvement in sales and sales management, I look forward to sharing with you some of the most significant tools and technology that has ever been available to salesmakers. I look forward to your comments and contribution as we explore this exiting next wave of selling.

So these applications are seriously dangerous for the me+free time=fun. It's possibly good that I don't have a lot of free time because I would be doing way too many of these things. I was intrigued by the color palette generator for use on my other blog and I got lots of great gift ideas!

I thought about how fun these different applications could be for programs with teens. I recently had a brainstorm for a youtube video program for teens and I thought the movie poster toy could be a really fun addition to that program. They could take a still from their video and create their own movie poster.

There are so many artistic adult program that could take advantage of these toys, too. A beading class or club could use the bead design generator. An artists club could use the trading card application to make the now popular artists trading cards into more easily reproducable cards that could be like business cards.

You could also do a holiday gift making workshop where you had people bring in their digital photos and taught them how to make these these apps to make really cool gifts!

I really want to create my own trading card now, but I have no none of my own photos here and I just reformatted my laptop and have yet to reload my photos onto it. It'll have to wait until I have more free time!

DIY music mashups are becoming increasingly prevalent as more and more musicians see the value of in

DIY music mashups are becoming increasingly prevalent as more and more musicians see the value of interacting with their fans. Luckily, as DJ Earworm points out, "the music industry is beginning to see the benefit of increased exposure through releasing stems directly to the public".

Remixing used to be largely the territory of DJs, producers and other "sonic manipulators", who would typically overlay the a cappella from one song on top of another or sometimes add their own sounds. But now fans are embracing the concept. We owe a big thank you to Radiohead for popularizing the fan remix concept (again) and to all the other musicians who have begun to release stems through various mediums. More and more artists, both underground and mainstream, are warming up to the idea.

Increasingly, average people don't just want to passively be entertained by media anymore. They want to experience it. Whether it's pictures, audio, or video, people are manipulating and mashing up media to their hearts' content. YouTube is a great example. People want to be seen and heard and be free to exercise their creativity in new ways. (Sometimes leaving the rest of us scratching our heads and wondering why they would possibly post a video of themselves doing that... but hey, they should still have that freedom and ideally the tools to do so.)

One has to give some credit to Girl Talk as well. Through his enthusiastic use of unauthorized samples, Girl Talk has been a pioneer in the mashup revolution. While legal remixing is certainly different than the bootleg subculture that grew around unauthorized sampling, these two sides of remix culture seem to be slowly converging. As artists and the powers that be in the music industry begin to embrace the perspective that when someone samples your music it's not stealing, but rather free promotion, the boundaries begin to melt away. And thus, music evolves.

In an article delving into some mashup history and the growing mashup revolution, Roberta Cruger says:

"In DIY culture, consumers are the producers, owning the tools of production -- a laptop instead of guitar, bass and drums. The bedroom is the studio and factory machinery moves out of the nightclub onto the Internet for millions to access. The media monopolies are fighting back, but with the airwaves gobbled up by conglomerates, homespun mash-ups may be the people's digital antidote."

When a need becomes apparent (in this case, the desire of fans to remix), naturally the solutions begin to surface as well. Like the MixMatchMusic Remix Wizard, which allows artists (e.g. The Bayliens) to host their own remix promotions easily. As remix culture continues to grow, it'll be fascinating to see what kinds of creative fusions and deconstructions happen. New genres will evolve, the industry will continue to take unpredictable twists and turns, and who knows what other clever things will surface as the tools and the freedom to explore and create are placed in the hands of music consumers.

For example, someone took the Remix Wizard (created to facilitate music remixes) and set up a page called "Help Sarah Make Sense" where you can rearrange Sarah's words (for better or for worse). Pretty funny actually. Go make a remix!

I love the blank stares I get when I mention the term “Web 2.0″ to almost any line manag

I love the blank stares I get when I mention the term "Web 2.0" to almost any line manager over 35 who isn't in marketing. It's such an overused and abused term that it's really not surprising that many people don't understand it. But, while lots of people have their own definitions, here's mine, honed and tinted by a couple of decades of marketing experience.

"Web 2.0" is the socialization of the internet - so rather than the internet being just a bunch of static "digital brochure" sites where the website owners determine the content, web 2.0 is the addition of a set of community and user-driven capabilities that enable participation and content creation, not just reading. No more are you at the mercy of just what the webmaster thinks! What does this mean in plain language? Here are some of the key concepts in Web 2.0:

Blogs like this one, where anyone can have a voice and anyone can read the posts and reply to them.

Sharing things that you like with others you think might like them. This can be done the old fashioned way by emailing the link, but more powerful are the social bookmarking sites like del.icio.us, digg, reddit and others.

Reviews and feedback on products, places and things. TripAdvisor.com is a great example of this and a very useful site for anyone taking a trip.

Social networks like facebook, MySpace, Bebo, LinkedIn and on and on.

Micro-blogging and life-casting services such as Twitter and Utterli, where you can update a host of followers anytime, anywhere from your cell phone.

oh and tagging, wikis, mashups, crowd-sourcing, and many others...

I'll stop for now. But you get the point. The key is "user participation". So what does this mean to business marketing? Ah, good question. But this post is long enough for now, so I'll leave that to a future post. Stay tuned.

FortiusOne, a Washington-area digital mapping company, has released something called Maker!. It

FortiusOne, a Washington-area digital mapping company, has released something called Maker!. It's a roll-your-own data visualization tool that allows you to mash up maps with a database and produce something that makes Google Maps look like they were produced by a computer running Windows386.

Below is a Flash-based map that takes a database of funding that's gone to tech companies based on size and location. You can instantly see where the money is going.

The data is entirely play-friendly--zoom into geographic areas, choose big or small investments, etc.

Here I've zeroed in on the D.C. area, where I ply my trade. A popover shows me that one of the big recipients of capital in my home town is Clearspring, the nation's lead widgeteer. [Huh. I wonder if they are hiring extremely good natured, value-priced, virtually hairless web consultants.] But it also reveals dozens of digital businesses I'd never heard of--GeniusRocket, Acumen, Price Comparison Guru, Brainware--within a 20-minute commute of my home.

The site is easy to build with [though beyond the skills of rank amateurs]. And it's already got a gallery full of some fascinating stuff.

Let's say, for instance, that you're a political operative trying to target women aged 18 to 30 to vote in November. Bam, you've got a map that breaks down this population down to county and city level, all across the U.S.

Of course, such a map could have multiple uses. Let's say you're an unmarried man aged 18 to 30 wondering where the numbers are most likely to work in your favor, potential-mate-wise.

Gentlemen, start your engines.

September is a busy month for sales people… after the summer doldrums many of us have to squee

September is a busy month for sales people... after the summer doldrums many of us have to squeeze an entire quarter's worth of deals into the final month of Q3. Well it turned out to be a very busy month for the InsideView development team, too. Our September release includes two new CRM integrations, the addition of Jigsaw contacts, improved industry search, and email notifications for mobile devices. Phew!

SalesView for Oracle CRM On Demand
We publicly unveiled our Oracle integration at the OpenWorld Social CRM Inner Circle. InsideView's externally-focused 'socialprise' capabilities are a perfect compliment to Oracle's internally-focused 'social CRM' capabilities. The Oracle partnership marks our fifth major CRM integration in just the last six months. SalesView is fast becoming a ubiquitous sales productivity application across the leading CRM platforms (Salesforce.com, SugarCRM, Landslide, Microsoft, Oracle).

[caption id="attachment_128" align="alignnone" width="240" caption="SalesView for Oracle CRM On Demand"][/caption]

SalesView for Microsoft Dynamics CRM
We publicly announced our Microsoft integration at Interop New York 2008. We're thrilled to bring SalesView FREE to all Microsoft Dynamics CRM customers, whether hosted or on-premise. Microsoft has also proven to be a strong supporter of socialprise, having recognized early on the value of tapping into social media to drive enterprise sales.

[caption id="attachment_129" align="alignnone" width="240" caption="SalesView for Microsoft Dynamics CRM"][/caption]

Jigsaw contacts for manager & director titles
Just a few weeks after announcing an expanded relationship with Jigsaw, we have added director and manager level titles from Jigsaw to the SalesView database. The addition of Jigsaw provides user-generated content, along with editorially maintained content from Hoovers, D&B, and Reuters and Web crawler content from ZoomInfo. Jigsaw brings several key strengths to the table including availability of lower level management titles, email addresses, and direct dial phone numbers.

[caption id="attachment_130" align="alignnone" width="259" caption="Jigsaw contacts"][/caption]

Improved industry-based company search
Our new industry classification makes it easier than ever to identify prospective customers by vertical/industry. You will find the new industries under Find >> Company Criteria.

[caption id="attachment_131" align="alignnone" width="258" caption="New industry search"][/caption]

Notifications for text-only mobile devices
If you haven't yet made the switch to a smart phone that support HTML emails, you can delay that purchase a bit longer. InsideView daily alerts are now readable on text-only mobile devices. (And for those of you who are used to viewing the nice HTML emails on your iPhone, you still can!)

The next step with Flickr is to get makin' with the Mashups - programs that take Flickr photos and do something else with them. Like put them on a Google map corresponding with where they were taken. Or make them into a slideshow and set music to them for YouTube. Some serious, some fun, all very cool and reasonably easy.

The mashup I've picked to feature is Bubblr - it takes Flickr photos and lets you turn them into a comic strip, adding your own speech bubbles as you go. Nothing earth-shattering, but a bit of fun. Might be just the thing to liven up a presentation or two.

Without further ado, here's the link through to my attempt at a Bubblr comic featuring Flickr photos... feedback gratefully appreciated!

Well, it's not often that I send a bird back to the taxpayers. Listen and learn from my mistake, cadets.

Here I am trying to support and promote good music and I've gone and devoted more than half a post to dissecting the enunciation curiosities of the British Isles. Following is a retake of my failed run - you'll notice this time not only do I complete the run, but I finish it in under two parsecs.

I'm still going to knock the accent, though. Just as I bag the Queenslanders for saying 'anythink' instead of 'anything' or the Scottish for insisting that the 'burgh' part of their capital, Edinburgh, be pronounced 'bruh' - or even my own heavily retarded prairie kin who say 'crick' instead of 'creek'.

On the internet, no-one can hear you smirk.

Take two:

---

Okay, soldiers, I have here your reading assignments for this week. No-one gets to spend any time in the simulators until you've got this one under your belt.

This week's recommended listening is the Ramdom Thoughts podcast. Host Scott puts together a mighty fine show (better than anything I’ve managed to squirt out lately) - he knows his mashes and assembles some fine tracks for your consumption. He pays homage to the legends of the genre (the second half of the most recent 'cast, episode 121, is the hour-long part six of 2 Many DJs' now-legendary 'As Heard on Radio Soulwax' sessions) while also presenting an excellent mix of newer producers' work.

The podcast gets some 64,000 downloads per episode, if you're the kind of person who's swayed by stats.

I highly recommend you point your intarwebz at http://ramdom.wordpress.com/ and have a good listen.

Oh, I almost forgot the public service announcement... Warning! Between tracks you may be submitted to what those of us in Australia and Canada will surely consider abuse of the consonants of the English laguage (Oh, English school system, if only you had a modicum of self-confidence, you’d be brave enough to stand up and shout ‘There’s a difference between F and TH!’).

Okay, cadets - there's the sitrep. Now go out and absorb some tunes.

Random Thoughts is a rather good source of mashups and remixes. Much better than anything I've managed to squirt out lately. Have a listen at http://ramdom.wordpress.com/

Have a listen if you can stand some mangling of the English language, that is. Many times over the course of an episode you will hear 'Ramdom' carefully spelt out letter-by-letter 'R-A-M-D-O-M' and then the second half podcast's title barfed out as 'foughts' instead of 'thoughts'.

Oh, English school system, if only you had a modicum of self-confidence, you'd be brave enough to stand up and shout 'There's a difference between F and TH!'

The Dark Bailout!

Here’s a brilliant idea: since the US government just announced they’ll use $700,000,000,000 yes, seven hundred BILLION dollars, to buy junk assets, this site, BuyMyShitPile has decided to let the people market their crap directly to the government, no middle man required! As anyone who has seen the interior of my apartment can attest, I'll be a bajillionaire in no time! Party at raincoaster's!!!

In an easily-predicted fallout effect, thousands upon thousands of now-unemployed and unemployable investment bankers are paying an underground network of so-called "Snakeheads" thousands of dollars to smuggle them across the border to job-rich havens in Mexico and Canada.

“I grew up in America and I love my country, but Lord knows, I have to make a living,” Peter Starmeyer, 38, says from the makeshift plywood and cardboard shanty he now calls home on Toronto’s increasingly seedy west side.

“When Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy and I lost my job, I had no other choice. The only way for me to keep living the American dream was to move to Canada where businesses value and respect workers and try to help them hold on to their jobs.”

Seven better uses for $700,000,000,000 from (of all places) Forbes and no, that's not too many zeros. The number is so big most media outlets are abbreviating it!

infrastructure

guilt-free electricity

healthcare

ecological action

education,

port expansion,

defence

The email outrage in Wired:

An e-mail that began as a rallying cry from a lone journalist to an influential circle of friends to protest the U.S. government bailout of Wall Street has ignited a national day of street protests. Some demonstrators plan to dump their rubbish in front of the bronze bull sculpture near Wall Street in downtown Manhattan Thursday.

"People are going to bring their own personal junk that they think is worth as much as the junk financial instruments that the government is proposing to buy from the Wall Street banks," says Andrew Boyd, an activist and freelance online-video artist for nonprofit groups in Manhattan. "We're hoping that people show up with their 8-track cassette collections, their old Spice Girl CDs, their surf boards that got bit by sharks and old Enron stock certificates."

And the email itself, right here on Wordpress:

Everyone,

This week the White House is going to try to push through the biggest robbery in world history with nary a stitch of debate to bail out the Wall Street bastards who created this economic apocalypse in the first place.

This is the financial equivalent of September 11. They think, just like with the Patriot Act, they can use the shock to force through the “therapy,” and we’ll just roll over!

Think about it: They said providing healthcare for 9 million children, perhaps costing $6 billion a year, was too expensive, but there’s evidently no sum of money large enough that will sate the Wall Street pigs. If this passes, forget about any money for environmental protection, to counter global warming, for education, for national healthcare, to rebuild our decaying infrastructure, for alternative energy.

This is a historic moment. We need to act now while we can influence the debate. Let’s demonstrate this Thursday at 4pm in Wall Street (see below).

We know the congressional Democrats will peep meekly before caving in like they have on everything else, from FISA to the Iraq War.

With Bear Stearns, Fannie and Freddie, AIG, the money markets and now this omnibus bailout, well in excess of $1 trillion will be distributed from the poor, workers and middle class to the scum floating on top.

This whole mess gives lie to the free market. The Feds are propping up stock prices, directing buyouts, subsidizing crooks and swindlers who already made a killing off the mortgage bubble.

Worst of all, even before any details have been hashed out, The New York Times admits that “Wall Street began looking for ways to profit from it,” and its chief financial correspondent writes that the Bush administration wants “Congress to give them a blank check to do whatever they want, whatever the cost, with no one able to watch them closely.”

It’s socialism for the rich and dog-eat-dog capitalism for the rest of us.

Let’s take it to the heart of the financial district! Gather at 4pm, this Thursday, Sept. 25 in the plaza at the southern end of Bowling Green Park, which is the small triangular park that has the Wall Street bull at the northern tip.

By having it later in the day we can show these thieves, as they leave work, we’re not their suckers. Plus, anyone who can’t get off work can still join us downtown as soon as they are able.

There is no agenda, no leaders, no organizing group, nothing to endorse other than we’re not going to pay! Let the bondholders pay, let the banks pay, let those who brought the “toxic” mortgage-backed securities pay!

On this list are many key organizers and activists. We have a huge amount of connections – we all know many other organizations, activists and community groups. We know P.R. folk who can quickly write up and distribute press releases, those who can contact legal observers, media activists who can spread the word, the videographers who can film the event, etc.

Do whatever you can – make and distribute your own flyers, contact all your groups and friends. This crime is without precedence and we can’t be silent! What’s the point of waiting for someone else to organize a protest two months from now, long after the crime has been perpetrated?

We have everything we need to create a large, peaceful, loud demonstration. Millions of others must feel the same way; they just don’t know what to do. Let’s take the lead and make this the start!

AGAIN:
When: 4pm – ? Thursday, September 25.
Where: Southern end of Bowling Green Park, in the plaza area
What to bring: Banners, noisemakers, signs, leaflets, etc.
Why: To say we won’t pay for the Wall Street bailout
Who: Everyone!

Should be any minute now...
