Finding a certain article on Wikipedia isn’t usually too hard — you just search for it.

Finding a certain article on Wikipedia isn't usually too hard -- you just search for it. But what if you're just interested in what Wikipedia has on a certain topic? For instance, would you have guessed that there are 44 articles on Olympic competitors from Oregon?

One of Wikipedia's great strengths is the "category" system. At the bottom of every article, you'll see a line that begins "Categories:". The links on that line provide a really interesting way to browse the encyclopedia. For instance, if you're reading up on one Olympic competitor, you might be surprised at who else you stumble upon by browsing categories.

Ever wonder about the history of bridges in Portland? Looking for a museum in Oregon, but can't remember the name? Have some questions about Oregon state legislators? Browsing categories can help.

A final note -- if you look at the last couple examples, you'll see not only lists of articles, but lists of sub-categories. In fact, the category for Oregon legislators contains no individual articles; that's because every legislator we have an article is further categorized as a senator, a representative, or both. So, to get to the individual articles, you'll need to burrow down into the more detailed categories.

Finally, for a more visually interesting introduction to Oregon-related articles on Wikipedia, you could always try the Oregon portal! On that one, keep in mind that every time you refresh the page, it will load a fresh set of article previews.

BarCamp Chicago wrapped up nicely yesterday with a number of talks. There was a talk about Python (I still don't get why folks aren't using Ruby, but that's just me), an open source hardware project demo, a talk on wikis, a talk on couchdb - very nice indeed.

The open source hardware project is called Arduino and is available prebuilt for a minimal price (about US$30 to US$40) - though you could build it yourself if you like (the diagrams are online and available to all). An accelerometer was attached to the Arduino device (which was attached to the computer via USB) and the outputs printed out on the console.

The wiki talk covered what it took to install a wiki and the speaker's experience with wikis (and MediaWiki in particular).

The couchdb talk discussed couchdb (which was particularly pertinent, because it runs using Erlang, discussed earlier). Couchdb is a database which is based on documents and uses RDF for everything, and which can be spread out among a set of computers quite easily. Note that it is not relational, and it is not object-oriented either.

And of course, what is BarCamp Chicago without Ron May?

This book covers the open-source MediaWiki wiki engine from installation and getting started through structuring your collaborative website, advanced formatting, images, multimedia, security, and managing users to backing up, restoring, and migrating your installation and creating new MediWiki templates. The author, Mizanur Rahman, is a Senior Software Engineer at ReliSource Technologies (http://www.relisource.com). The book has a fast-paced, friendly tutorial style and uses a fun example to teach all of MediaWiki's key features. Run your own MediaWiki collaborative website with this fast-paced, friendly tutorial, which is full of information and advice for creating powerful MediaWiki sites, and filling them with varied and useful collaborative content. Whether you are creating a public wiki for completely open contributions, a private wiki for collaborating within your work team or group of friends, or even a wiki for personal use, this book will show you all the essential steps. You will see the various ways of organizing and managing content, and preventing collaboration from getting out of control. You'll learn how to incorporate images and other media into your pages, as well as becoming a wiki markup wizard to produce intricately formatted pages with tables, lists, and more. On the technical side, the book covers how to administer users, back up and restore content safely, migrate your installation to another server or database, and even make hacks to the code. The power that makes MediaWiki so popular also makes it daunting for many would-be administrators. This book puts MediaWiki in the hands of busy administrators with no time for trial and error, enabling them to get their site up and running quickly and easily. A fun example that runs through the book holds everything together as you see how a real site develops and improves as more and more features of MediaWiki are used. This book is for competent computer users who want to run MediaWiki. They should have some knowledge of HTML and have used a wiki before. No PHP knowledge is required for most of the book, although some chapters at the end include some PHP code. Table Of Contents: 1 Introducing MediaWiki 2 Installation and Configuration 3 Creating Your First Wiki 4 Advanced Formatting and Multimedia Content 5 Organizing Content with MediaWiki 6 Managing Multiple Users 7 Administration Essentials 8 Templates and Themes 9 Customizing MediaWiki 10 Backing Up and Moving a MediaWiki 11 Cool Hacks

Természetesen a Jogi Lexikonon.

This video from the excellent Common Craft explains it better than I could hope to.

Wiki's have been used for everything from collaborative scriptwriting ( < good link that one) to knowledge sharing in the US Government. It's incredibly powerful and democratic tool, and

For the first time all day, the site is moving at what appears to be full-speed.

Also, to answer the earlier-posed question about the Squid having to log a ton of extra space when it restarts, it turns out that is true - apparently something (either Apache restarting or somehow detecting that the Squid just came back) triggers it so that the MediaWiki install sends a <em>ton</em> of "PURGE" requests to the Squid server which basically tell it to forget about a page it may be caching because it's probably out of date now. Each request is another line in the log-file, so that's about 800,000 extra lines in the span of a few minutes.

Wikis are great not only to co-author documents, but also to implement private or public knowledge b

Wikis are great not only to co-author documents, but also to implement private or public knowledge bases. For CommunitySense, I wanted to install a number of wikis. Two issues arose: which wiki and to have it hosted somewhere else or host it myself?

The quest for the right wiki took me quite a while. A good starting point for comparing the features of the many wikis around is the WikiMatrix. I tried quite a few of the wikis listed, but none of them served all the purposes I intend to use the range of wikis for (co-authoring, file management, personal information management, etc). One option would have been to use different wikis for different purposes, but the learning curves and maddening variations in syntax caused me to make the principled decision to focus on one wiki only and master it well. I chose MediaWiki, as it has the most complete set of features and has proven to be very reliable and , as demonstrated by its use in Wikipedia. It also has a large user base, guaranteeing sustainability and further development.

The next question was whether to use a hosted version or host it myself? Hosted versions are expensive, especially when hosting multiple wiki instances. My current Dutch provider, Hosting2Go, didn't provide good support for MediaWiki installation and configuration. In my quest for another provider, I came across SiteGround. They not only provide great web space (750 Gb!) and bandwidth (7500 Gb / month!), but their customer service also installs as many MediaWikis as you need. This for only about US$ 6,- / month. I had three MediaWikis installed, all of them ready for use within 15 minutes after my requests.

After their installation, I only had to make some small changes to the LocalSettings.php configuration file, in order to get the right privacy settings. This turned out to be really simple with the help of the following document: How to make your MediaWiki private?

I was in Egypt for my first Wikimania. I was here to feel how one of the biggest global collaborative project works, from a governance and technological standpoint.

I'm not a contributor to Wikipedia, and i never actively followed the free culture movement. What i discovered is that the Wikipedia project defines itself as a media project, rather than a simple collection of controversial user-generated content, which is much more ambitious!

I was impressed by the quality of the keynotes, speakers were thinking big, but sometimes too much - officials showed an open mind but sometimes their talks were just pointless. On another side, most contributors were much more down-to-earth. It was striking to see the Wikipedia board openly discussin issues with a huge audience, without problems.

Benjamin Mako Hill talks was brilliant. At least now we have evidences that Facebook is spying on us!

Just as brilliant was Ronda Shearer talk. The story of the Monster Pig Hoax was eye-opening. Just as evidences that networks are actively cheating on truth, even when information are unimportants.

On the technology side, i realized that Mediawiki is certainly more than the lackluster piece of software that commercial wiki vendors sometimes describe: UI is certainly not its best side, but it is very scalable and some wiki innovations seems to be happening only on Mediawiki, namely semantic implementations and open source online video edition.

PmWiki : Pm Wiki via kwout

[caption id="attachment_101" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Eine echte Aufgabe wartet heute..."][/caption]

Maka dilakukanlah proses backup database Wiki-TA-PA yang lama oleh admin terdahulu (a.k.a si jenggot) dibantu ama zeft.

Format harddisk

Install Windows Server 2008

Setting jaringan (set IP) buat windows servernya

I do need help in three interrelated tasks: Maemo_contributions, Upstream projects and Remarkable community projects. If you could just add a bit of information in a single edit, that would be great.

The Maemo Summit, of course: Berlin, September 19-20. I'm willing to announce the open registration since 2 weeks ago but every day seems to be a one day delay. Soon.

Not off-topic: frankly speaking I expected more buzz or questions about Symbian. Don't get me wrong, it's ok. Thanks to this I have been able to focus on some real work. ;)

And 1H2008 is gone. These days I'm de Rodríguez with more time to read/write/discuss with some of the great engineers in our team. The advice they give me is Maemo has the community it deserves. Probably this will be my main Food for Thought in 2H.

Overview:
I usually find that lots of poeple find it quite difficult to install any application made

Overview:

I usually find that lots of poeple find it quite difficult to install any application made in PHP and MySQL on their Linux boxes. They find it a bit confusing how to configure the settings. How to install the LAMP stack. Where to put the PHP applications code. I was quite inspired to write to this after having I saw people facing problems on Ubuntu Forums. This is the one which I dealt with.

Sometimes spoon-feeding becomes important, but only for the first time.

Scenario:

A newbie who knows just the basics of Linux. He/She wants to run a PHP application like wordpress / phpBB / osCommerce on their computer.

The distro is assumed to be Ubuntu, though it doesn't change much for others too.

Lets Start:

Step 1: Getting the LAMP stack on your system

You first need to install LAMP on your box, Installation is quite simple. Just get the following packages using the command on your terminal ( Applications> Accessories>Terminal)

sudo apt-get install apache2 php5-mysql libapache2-mod-php5 mysql-server

While installing MySQL, it might ask for set up the root password,if it doesn't ask, then continue.

For more information check this post here .

Step 2: Download the PHP application

You need to download the PHP application which you want to run over the webserver. Examples are Wordpress, phpBB, osCommerce, MediaWiki etc

Get them and let it be in the folder where you have downloaded it.

Step 3: Moving these software to the Apache's root directory

Apache's root directory is /var/www (/var/www/html). This is owned by the user www-data which is a minimal user created just for running apache and web servers. A normal user cant write to this directory.

Now here is the solution of how to copy the data to this directory. This method can be used for any directory which the normal user does not have write access. The concept behind the method is to start an instance of nautilus ( explorer) with root (superuser) privileges. For this follow the isntructions

* Press Alt + F2

* A Run daialog box appears, over there type gksudo nautilus /var/www

* You will be asked for your password as you are elevating your privileges

* Nautilus opens up,now copy the tarball/zip file from the download location to /var/www

* Untar the archive by Right Click > Extract Archive

You may have the package in the folder say /var/www/wordpress. We are supposing wordpress as an example.

Step 4: Setting up username and accounts in database

Now you need to have a create a new database for the software you intent to work on. For this open MySQL from the terminal. If you had been asked to set up the password at time of MySQL installation then use this command

mysql -u root -p

and then enter the root password which you set up

if you were not asked to set up root password, then use this command at terminal

mysql -u root

After this is done you will be dropped to mysql prompt. Create a new database using this:

create database foo;

type quit to exit.

Step 5: Change the data in the config file.

Hunt for file which may have name such as config, settings etc etc. One you locate it,open to find the area for entering database settings. The settings should be:

Hostname: localhost

Username: root

Password: <the password you set up>

Database name: foo (or whatever you created)

Step 6: Access it via browser

Now point your browser to http://localhost/wordpress

You may get the basic installation thing or whatever stuff you need.

Additional Stuffs:

You can be asked to make some locations writable. There may be instances like the software cant write to a specific folder or file. It can be used for cache or any such temporary stuff. Then you need to change the permissions. Simply give write permissions to the user www-root. However this situation may be unlikely. e..g we have to change the permissions of folder /var/www/wordpress/cache

sudo chmod -cR u+w /var/www/wordpress/cache

Another Wikieducator workshop starts tomorrow:

The Learning4Content (L4C) initiative is conducting face-to-face workshops in 52 Commonwealth countries - and online workshops every month. To date, this is the largest wiki skills training project on the planet.

The L4C initiative will help WikiEducator achieve its goal of a free version of the education curriculum by 2015. Each L4C workshop participant receives free wiki skills training in return for providing a free lesson or learning resource to WikiEducator.

Register here: http://wikieducator.org/Learning4Content/Registration

This is a great place to learn about open content and using mediawiki.

These guys are a little modest. This may even be the largest wiki skills training project in the known universe. I dislike the three terms skills, training and project, but this is worth a look.

Hello, first post and everything…
So yeah back to WordPress again… ‘Cause before

Hello, first post and everything...

So yeah back to Wordpress again... 'Cause before that we had... let's see... Wordpress, Joomla, MediaWiki (which wouldn't even install), Wordpress (again!), Movable Type (again installation issues) and then SMF (which had some weird problem that sometimes the page wouldn't load). Anyway i've decided that I'll use Wordpress.com for the moment since I always ended up switching after I installed a script myself.

So, yeah... what to say... well I recently formatted my computer since the Windows install was wrecked... I was trying to switch to Ubuntu but I must have done it some weird dodgy way that wrecks the system. Then I finally got the disk... no help there, so I'm waiting for another. Anyway so I ended up reinstalling Windows and i was gonna delete all my stuff anyway so formatting was no problem... except that I thought I had another copy of the start of the new Chapter One somewhere... turns out I'd deleted that off my webhost so... basically my stuffed... exept that i had sent it to a friend through MSN, let's just hope she didn't delete it... Fingers crossed, people... let's have some hope... even if yesterday was Friday the 13th... emm forget I said that last bit.

Anyway, I'll just have to hope for the best. And then there's also this great big work experience form-to-be-handed-in-by-Thursday thing looming over my head... don't get me wrong work experience would be great... get a week off school... though i just hope it doesn't turn into "cheap child labour week" for Edinburgh's local businesses. Anyway I was gonna try Rockstar North, the game's company but I couldn't find any way to contact them. So I thought maybe a newspaper... I dunno... well anyway no luck there either. I s'pose I should maybe have spoken to my Guidance teahcer about it... but she was in Spain and so was her job-sharer... plus I had late detentions all week so I never really got much of a chance to speak to anyone else about it... I'll jsut have to do that on Monday then... but that's me, always leaving everything to the last minute.

Hmm... so what else was i gonna say... oh yeah that's right... Doctor Who. It's on tonight, episode's called Midnight, yep the one with the woman in the advert screaming "It's coming for ME!!"

And after that Rose is back :D

Also theres Firefox Download day, hopefully they can set the record...

Bye, hopefully I'll post something new soon...
