Questa puntinosissima esserina luminosa è una medusina australiana.

Una delle più pericolose al mondo, dicono.

A vederla così, fa anche un po' tenerezza,

ma, si sa, dopo "Arsenico e vecchi merletti" è meglio non fidarsi delle vetuste tenenerine..

Comunque, tutto ciò per dire che sono stata all'Acquario di Genova,

tra meduse, stelle di mare, foche baffute e mante carezzevoli (sono pelosine!!!)

Ah, sì, c'era anche il tartarugòn indispettito da un pesciolino nero che, oltre a fare un doveroso peeling alle rugose zampone, si divertiva a sbeffeggiare il musone della tartaruga con la pinna caudale..ecco il perchè di quell'espressione lì..

Ma, ma..non sono stata solo a Genova, ho trascorso due giorni bellissimi a Torino.

Città signorile, ma non austera e sopratutto molto ospitale.

A chiunque io e il Figlio Unico chiedessimo informazioni veniva spontaneo rispondere con un sorriso e con tanta gentilezza: e scusate se è poco.

Al museo egizio, più che le mummie di epoca faraonica, mi hanno colpito i resti di epoca più antica,

preistorica per esattezza, mummificati ma non ancora con l'uso di deposizione in sarcofago:

posizione fetale e viso rivolto verso il sole, con l'augurio di una nuova nascita nel mondo di là..

Ovviamente, lo sguardo femminile non poteva non posarsi sugli accessori, ritrovati intatti in alcune tombe, guardate questi sandali:

la parte rialzata all'insù serviva ad attraversare meglio le zone con tanta sabbia, come un deserto, e le parti laterali servivano ad evitare che il sandalo si riempisse troppo di sabbia.

Questa foto è per i meno sensibili, lo ammetto:

come si può notare, il Figlio Unico scruta con attenzione da anatomo-patologo le incisioni laterali sotto le costole fatte per privare il corpo degli organi, mummificati a parte e conservati nei vasi detti Canopi.

Oh, ecco. Poi non dite che nel mio blog si parla solo di tristezza ermetica, a volte faccio anche reportage.

Ma ecco non stavo aggiungendo al racconto la cosa più importante:

ho finalmente incontrato un amico, Stefano,

ed ho avuto la possiblità di guardarlo forte forte negli occhi.

Abbiamo avuto conferme in due,

siamo stati bene in quattro,

(ma eravamo in sei contando due cuccioli al seguito)

e abbiamo capito che davvero, come tempo fa gli avevo scritto,

l'umanità non è poi così distante.

Le retour des méduses

Ce n'est pas l'invasion massive du début de semaine sur la plage de Biscarrosse, où une vingtaine de baigneurs avaient été brûlés. Brûlures qui avaient nécessité l'hospitalisation de huit d'entre eux, et la fermeture de la plage. Les heures suivantes, la grosse frayeur avait vite cédé le pas à quelques jours d'accalmie sur le littoral.

Un répit de courte durée cependant : hier les méduses, toujours des physalies, ont à nouveau sévi sur les plages de la côte sud où les ont portées des courants marins orientés Nord-Sud.

Que faire ? Selon la préfecture, trois personnes en ont été victimes à Seignosse, cinq à Messanges et deux autres encore à Capbreton, sans cependant être hospitalisées. Pour autant, tout contact avec des physalies, reconnaissables à leur couleur bleutée et à leurs filaments pouvant atteindre plusieurs mètres, occasionne des lésions cutanées très douloureuses et peut également provoquer sensation de malaise, accélération du rythme cardiaque et de la pression artérielle, vertiges et douleurs abdominales.

Pratique, la préfecture explique qu'il faut éviter de toucher ces méduses même échouées et, en cas de découverte, prévenir sans délai les postes de secours. Elle préconise également de se baigner en zone surveillée.

Rien d'alarmant. Sur la plage des Savanes de Capbreton, où deux baigneurs se sont plaints de piqûres de physalies bleutées, le scooter des mers était de sortie. Le brigadier-chef Campana et le gardien Labille ont sillonné toutes les plages de Capbreton, signalant ça et là quelques physalies isolées. « Elles sont facilement repérables avec leur poche d'air flottante. On les suit jusqu'à la plage et on les jette directement. Mais il n'y a vraiment rien d'alarmant », explique Dominique Campana.

Dans la zone de baignade surveillée, où de nombreux estivants profitent de leurs dernières vagues, personne ici ne parle de physalies. « Si on nous signalait des méduses, nous n'irions pas à l'eau. Nous sommes là depuis le début de l'après-midi, et je n'en ai pas vu une seule », témoigne Mariane, dont les trois enfants plongent en toute liberté dans les vagues. « On fait confiance aux MNS. Tant qu'il n'y a pas drapeau rouge, on se baigne tranquillement », ajoute Pierrick, le papa.

Rien à signaler à l'horizon. Le scooter tourne depuis une heure et demie pour prévenir un éventuel arrivage massif de méduses, comme ce fut le cas à Biscarrosse lundi. Mais à l'horizon, rien de nouveau. Sur la plage des Estagnots, à Seignosse, où trois baigneurs ont été brûlés, les méduses sont passées presque inaperçues. Gérard, un habitué de la côte landaise, y va de son petit commentaire : « J'étais à Bisca quand les méduses ont débarqué. Ce jour-là, il y avait des raisons d'avoir peur. Aujourd'hui, c'est un jour comme un autre ».

Comme chaque année. Pas d'affolement non plus du côté des « locaux ». Les pharmaciens de Seignosse et Capbreton ont en effet accueilli des victimes de la physalies. « Mais pas plus que d'habitude », modère-t-on à la pharmacie Moreaux de Capbreton. « Il y a toujours eu des méduses sur notre littoral, c'est une affection que l'on connaît depuis des années. Alors oui peut-être que cet été, elles étaient plus nombreuses, poursuit-il. Sur le coup c'est vrai que la douleur est vive, mais passagère : ça fait vraiment l'effet d'un coup de fouet, avec une traînée rouge sur la peau. »

Même discours à Seignosse, à l'officine du Penon, où l'on a accueilli des victimes de la physalie « tout l'été ». Aujourd'hui, cinq baigneurs tout de même se sont présentés à la porte de la pharmacie, suite à un malheureux contact avec une méduse. Si la cause est la même, le traitement en revanche diffère selon les patients et les manifestations présentés par chacun. À la pharmacie Moutron, toujours à Seignosse, aucun cas n'a été signalé aujourd'hui, en revanche « plusieurs victimes se sont présentées il y a deux ou trois jours. »

Bref, la physalie sur les plages landaises, ce n'est pas nouveau mais ça fait toujours aussi mal et peut-être plus souvent que les autres étés. Et quand on a choisi l'Atlantique pour éviter les attaques de requins, oursins et autres murènes des latitudes tropicales plus inhospitalières, on préférerait que les méduses aillent promener leurs filaments ailleurs.

Méduses sur le littoral girondin : appel à la vigilance de la préfecture

Cette mesure fait suite "à l'hospitalisation, lundi au centre hospitalier d'Arcachon, de huit baigneurs victimes de brûlures cutanées et de malaises résultant d'un contact avec des méduses", a indiqué la préfecture, dans un communiqué.

Ces vacanciers, dont deux ont été touchés à La Teste (Gironde) et six à Biscarrosse (Landes), en limite des plages girondines, ont pu ressortir après quelques heures de surveillance, a-t-on ajouté de même source.

L'Ifremer d'Arcachon a pour sa part identifié l'espèce repérée lundi comme étant la "Physalia Physalis" et confirmé son "caractère dangereux", selon la préfecture. Il ne s'agit pas de la même espèce que celle arrivée cet été sur plusieurs plages de la Côte d'Azur, qui sont des "Pelagia Noctiluca".

Ces méduses, reconnaissables à leur couleur bleutée lorsqu'elles sont immergées, sont dotées de très longs filaments pouvant atteindre plusieurs mètres. Le contact avec ces animaux provoque des lésions cutanées très douloureuses de type brûlure ou urticaire.

Des symptômes plus généraux sont possibles: sensation de malaise, accélération du rythme cardiaque et de la pression artérielle, vertiges, douleurs abdominales, a rappelé la préfecture, en précisant que pour l'heure, aucune interdiction de baignade n'a été prise sur les plages girondines.

Une reconnaissance aérienne effectuée mardi matin par un hélicoptère de la gendarmerie a confirmé la présence en grappes d'une trentaine de spécimen, à 500 m de la côte à hauteur de Soulac, Hourtin, Carcans, du sémaphore du Cap Ferret et des passes sud du bassin d'Arcachon. Cinq à dix spécimen ont par ailleurs été aperçus à l'intérieur du bassin.

Oggio vorrei proporvi un articolo su dei piccoli animaletti marini che però ci fanno soffrire un bel pò quando le incontriamo in acqua, parliamo della pelagia noctiluca, o più semplicemente della medusa rossa.

Già da Aprile i media hanno parlato di meduse "rosse" che invadevano le nostre acque, un esempio è stata la vera e propria invasione a Portofino. Queste meduse sono abbondanti nei nostri mari, generalmente vivono lontane dalla spiaggia ma, soprattutto, nei periodi autunnale e primaverile si avvicinano alla costa.

Sono molto temute dai bagnanti nel periodo estivo a causa del loro "morso" che causa irritazioni molto dolorose. Ho segnato la parola morso tra virgolette perchè in effetti non si tratta di "morso", le meduse NON mordono affatto; venendo a contatto con il nostro corpo rilasciano una sostanza irritante che provoca irritazione e dolore più o meno accentutato a seconda del tipo di pelle.

Questa sostanza è di per se' basica, per cercare di arrecare sollievo basta utilizzare del semplice aceto! insomma.  ammoniaca o soluzioni ammoniacali non servono a nulla.

Oltre a questo metodo per così dire "fatto in casa", si possono usare tubetti di gel astringente al cloruro di alluminio (es. quello della MOST). Questo gel viene utilizzato anche per le punture di zanzare e va applicato più volte sulla zona irritata fino a scomparsa della lesione. La particolarità di questo gel e che blocca il prurito e la diffusione delle tossine presenti nella sostanza rilasciata dalla medusa sulla pelle.

Si mangiano. Le meduse si mangiano. Ne è certa Marie-Dominique Arrighi che sul suo blog regala anche una bella ricetta.

Dopo la bollitura, infatti, le sostanze urticanti restano neutralizzate. Si sciacqua la polpa e la si condisce con limone e pepe (l'olio no). Poche calorie, proteine purissime. Buon appetito!

Fare il bagno diventa pericoloso. Nel 2006 la notizia veniva data dal tgcom.

Quest'anno il fenomeno sembra avere valenza eccezionale, sia per il numero di meduse, sia per la sua estensione geografica.

Sempre tgcom racconta come le coste italiane siano letteralmente invase. Sono milioni gli esemplari di tutte le dimensioni e di ogni colore. Si muovono spostate dalle correnti e rischiano di arrivare fino alle spiagge.

L'allarme è stato lanciato dall'Istituto di ricerca per la protezione ambientale del ministero dell'Ambiente.

Al momento arrivano segnalazioni frammentarie da pescatori o ricercatori impegnati in altre missioni.Ma è alquanto evidente come il fenomeni riguardi tutti i paesi che si affacciano sul mediterraneo.

Le segnalazioni indicano una grande presenza al largo del Tirreno, davanti alla Liguria e più in generale nei mari intorno all'Italia. Al momento quelle spiaggiate (passate il termine) sono poche, ma se le correnti dovessero farle avvicinare troppo alla costa fare il bagno diventerebbe troppo pericoloso per i turisti.

Il fenomeno non è solo "di casa nostra", pensate che anche il prestigioso Herald Tribune ha dedicato un articolo al fenomeno intervistando una esterta di meduse dell'Istituto di Scienze Marine di Barcellone.

La dottoressa spiega come il problema sia legato ai cambiamenti in atto nei nostri mari. Questi ultimi sono frutto dei cambiamenti climatici, dell'inquinamento delle acque costiere e della diminuzione di pesci che mangiano le meduse, tonni e pesci spada.

Il problema, tuttavia, non è per l'uomo (in fondo basta non entrare in acqua per non incappare in fastidiose irritazioni), quanto per gli altri pesci che potrebbero morire per sofficamento a causa dell'eccessivo numero di meduse. Ovviamente la pensano diversamente i pescatori italiani che, ad ogni battuta, raccolgono circa 400 kili di meduse e quindi altrettanti in meno di pesci. E se in altri paesi esistono piani d'intervento con barriere, come in costa azzurra e spagna, in Italia non ci sono soldi, quindi è probabile che arrivino tra i turisti a pochi metri dalla spiaggia.

Ma quali sono le meduse chiamate in causa? In parte ce lo dice il correre.it: la Pelagia noctiluca e la Rhizostoma pulmo. Entrambe sono urticanti. A queste due specie si aggiunge la Velella che appare come una moneta da due euro trasparente.

Bisogna precisare che le meduse in questione non sono tossiche, ma semplicemente urticanti. Quindi il rischio per l'uomo è limitato ad un leggero fastidio e qualche arrossatura. L’unica specie lievemente tossica è la Chrysaora hysoscella, ma i problemi sono comunque legati a livello di epidermide, e sono assenti elementi di tossicità sistemica, come in altre specie.

Le più pericolose vivono in Giappone e in Australia e sono: la Chironex fleckeri, le cui punture, dolorosissime, introducono un veleno neurotossico che può portare rapidamente alla morte, e la Carukia barnesi, presente nella barriera corallina del Queensland, a nord-est dell’Australia.

Detta anche ’vespa di mare', è tra le più velenose del mondo: la ’strisciata' può causare il collasso nel giro di pochi minuti e il suo veleno provocare un improvviso e fortissimo aumento della pressione arteriosa, oltre a emorragie cerebrali.

Completano il quadro delle meduse pericolose la Physalia phisalis, detta Caravella portoghese, che è presente nei mari tropicali. La tossicità dei suoi tentacoli, lunghi sino a 40 metri, pare sia paragonabile a quella di un serpente cobra. Quanto a dimensioni, la medusa gigante Echizem Kurage, inquilina nei mari giapponesi, può arrivare a pesare fino a 200 kg (fonte: la stampa).

Cos'è una medusa

Quello di medusa è uno dei due stadi della vita degli cnidari (l'altro è quello di polipo), i quali possono essere sessili (vivono aderenti al fondo/substrato), nectonici (nuotano) oppure possono avere entrambi i cicli vitali.

La medusa è un invertebrato acquatico, prevalentemente marino, a simmetria raggiata, così fatto: ha un ombrello, all'interno del quale si trova il manubrio, e i tentacoli.
La medusa si muove spinta dalle correnti oppure sfruttando l'idrogetto, ovvero espellendo l'acqua che si trova all'interno dell'ombrello, ottenendo così quel famigerato movimento pulsatorio che tutti conosciamo.
Ma tutti conoscono molto bene i tentacoli della medusa, le sua armi di predazione, le sue "forchette" per il pranzo di plancton (oppure in certi casi di pesci), insomma di tutto ciò che si appiglia e che possa essere condotto verso la bocca (che è sita nel manubrio) da parte della medusa. I tanto temibili tentacoli contengono gli cnidociti, cellule che, grazie allo cnidociglio, a contatto con la preda (o il preicolo) rilasciano le cnidae, ovvero dei filamenti estroflessibili (nematocisti o spirocisti) che possiedono una tossina (all'interno dello cnidoblasto), per lo più urticante, ma a volte paralizzante (dipende anche dalle dimensioni della vittima).

Come ragiona una medusa?

Beh la nostra brava medusa non ragiona, e questo non perchè sia sciocca e non voglia soffermarsi a riflettere, ma perchè non ha un sistema nervoso centrale, essa ha almeno tre anelli nervosi concentrici, collegati fra loro in modo di formare una sorta di rete. Quando l'ombrello della medusa viene toccato od urtato, il segnale si propaga nella rete in modo controllato e fa reagire opportumanete la medusa, la quale, il più delle volte, scarica i suoi cnidociti e se ne va nella direzione opposta a quella dell'urto.

La medusa inoltre mantiene il proprio equilibrio grazie a un sistema di "pietruzze" (statocisti contenuti nei ropalii) che, toccando l'interno della medusa, sono in grado di fornire alla stessa dati in merito alla sua inclinazione. Ed è in grado di sapere dove si trova la luce grazie a dei fotorecettori.

Conclusioni

Ora, ci sarebbero da dire decine di cose sulle meduse, ma il punto resta che esse si fanno trasportare dalle correnti, non hanno un cervello, percui non possono decidere se siete un pericolo/una preda/un ostacolo, hanno un numero limitato di risposte comportamentali e sono i primi animali con una rete nervosa.

Possono sembrare fastidiose, forse non vi farebbe piacere riceverle in faccia o altrove, ma sono indiscutibilmente nel loro ambiente, e sono soprattutto indice di pulizia delle acque. Esse ospitano organismi simbionti che producono ossigeno in cambio del trasporto gratuito che fornisce la medusa, sono un pericolo o un fastidio solo se noi le cerchiamo o le impattiamo per sbaglio.

Rimedi&Consigli

Senz'altro il mio consiglio è di evitare il bagno se sapete che in quel momento loro sono presenti, se invece non lo sapete, tenete nella borsa apposite pomate, esse sono in grado di neutralizzare le tossine delle meduse, se addirittura temete chock anafilattici portatevi queste pomate con voi in acqua.

Rispettate le meduse, e imparate a conoscerle, sanno essere simpatiche e interessanti, la loro vasta gamma (in assenza di sistema nervoso centrale sembrano davvero "intelligenti") di comportamenti è affascinante e a volte divertente (come vedere die polipi di cnidari saltellare giù per gli scogli per fuggire dal predatore).

Insomma il mare affascina, piace, ma nasconde misteri, conosciamoli prima di metterli alla gogna e mietere vittime, creeremmo dei danni impressionanti all'ambiente, danni evitabili solo usando il cervello per studiare.

Le phénomène pourrait paraître bien anodin s'il n'était aussi récurrent. Jusqu’ici, en se basant sur deux siècles de relevés, on avait pu établir des cycles d'environ douze ans : la méduse apparaissait pendant une période de deux à sept ans, puis disparaissait cinq ans. Mais, cet été, la demoiselle revient en huitième année. Pelagia noctiluca a le mauvais goût de faire fi des statistiques. Gabriel Gorsky, chercheur du CNRS à l'Observatoire océanologique de Villefranche-sur-mer, rappelle ici que ce sont des organismes qui se déplacent en bancs énormes, de façon aléatoire au gré des vents et des courants.

Alors, la faute à qui si on se retrouve avec une indélicate entre les jambes lorsqu'on se baigne ? « À l'homme, répond sans hésiter Gabriel Gorsky. Quand vous prélevez des compétiteurs ou des prédateurs, les méduses envahissent le milieu. Quand vous augmentez la température, c'est favorable aux méduses. » Certaines tortues ingurgitent jusqu'à 100 kg de méduses par jour, mais dérangées par les activités humaines, elles se sont faites bien rares. D'autres invoquent la raréfaction du thon rouge. Mais pour Patrick Lelong, biologiste à l’Institut océanographique Paul Ricard aux Embiez (Var), cela ne tient pas la route : « Personne n’a jamais retrouvé une méduse dans l’estomac d’un thon », déclare-t-il dans Libération. Les polluants chimiques, auxquels la méduse serait particulièrement résistante, alors que certains font proliférer le phytoplancton, et donc son casse-croûte, sont aussi pointés du doigt. « Ce sont des organismes très opportunistes, conclut Gabriel Gorsky. Ils sont là depuis 600 millions d'années et sont très bien adaptés au milieu. »

Une idée : et si on faisait des sushis aux méduses, en lieu et place du thon rouge ?

Toujours pour ce même atelier, j'explique que la BD est l'art de suggérer sans tout dessiner. Une série de Cow (notre meilleur pédagogue) et d'une peau de banane vient illustrer le propos.

Nell’ambito del Festival Meditaeuropa, giunto alla sua seconda edizione, Galleria Mirada è lieta di ospitare la mostra personale del disegnatore serbo Zograf, che è sicuramente uno degli autori con cui l’associazione ravennate ha intessuto un rapporto creativo importante e continuo negli ultimi sette anni.
Lo psiconauta visivo è una mostra che presenta in galleria una ventina di tavole originali e mumerosi disegni a ricamo realizzati da Gordana Basta, moglie e autrice di diverse sceneggiature di Zograf.
Zograf, conosciuto non solo dal pubblico del fumetto, ma anche da coloro che hanno seguito con attenzione le vicende del Paese oltre Adriatico, rappresenta uno dei migliori esempi di come fumetto, storia contemporanea e reportage ad immagini, possono essere correlati. Il lavoro artistico di questo giornalista - disegnatore è centrato sulla rappresentazione della realtà, letta dagli occhi onirici di un disegnatore che vuole autorappresentarsi come occhio ingenuo di osservazione. L'aspetto onirico e di ricerca dei processi di elaborazione del sogno e dei meccanismi a questo sottesi costituiscono una delle tematiche trasversali al suo lavoro (come testimonia anche il libro Psiconauta, pubblicato anche in italiano). Il titolo della mostra rimanda proprio a questa cifra stilistica del lavoro di Zograf, che costituisce uno strumento di lettura del suo lavoro e del suo modo di guardare e raccontare un reale che a volte facilmente si tinge dei colori del sogno.
Zograf e Gordana Basta saranno ospiti del Festival e incontreranno il pubblico durante l’inaugurazione festosa di sabato 3 maggio. Inoltre Zograf realizzerà un seminario / workshop con gli studenti del corso di fumetto del Liceo Artistico della città e presenterà il suo ultimo libro lunedì 5 maggio alle 18 nella piazzetta di S. Domenico.

Nota biografica
Aleksandar Zograf, nome d’arte di Sasa Rakesic, è nato nel 1963 in Serbia. Nel 1986 ha iniziato a pubblicare i suoi fumetti su diverse riviste serbe. Dall'inizio degli anni '90, gran parte del suo lavoro e' stato pubblicato su riviste di vario genere. PUBBLICAZIONI. "Life Under Sanctions", "Psychonaut 1-3", "Flock of Dreamers" (USA), "Dream Watcher" (GB), Diario, "Psiconauta" (Italia), "Psychonaut" (Germania). I suoi lavori sono stati esposti a mostre e incontri sul fumetto di diversi paesi, tra cui: "Expocomics", Bari; "Nuvole a Cremona", Cremona; "Lucca Comics", Lucca; "Caption", Oxford; "Comics Festival in Athens", Atene; "Angoulême 2000", Angoulême. MOSTRE PERSONALI. Pancevo, Belgrado, Seattle. PREMI. 1999: "Hector Oesterheld Award", Roma ; "Scommesse sul futuro", Napoli. 1998: "Lucca Comics - Premio speciale", Lucca; 1997: "Author of the year", Zajecar, Jugoslavia.
Bordana Basta collabora con Sasa Rakezic per i testi dei suoi fumetti. Sue storie sono state pubblicate in numerose riviste come "Rare Bit Fiends", "Cow" (USA), "Mano" (Italia), "Patagonija", (Serbia), "Stripburger" (Slovenia). I suoi testi sono presenti negli albi di Alexandar Zograf: "Psychonaut" (USA), "Psiconauta" (Italia) e nelle sue serie settimanali intitolate "Saluti dalla Serbia". Ha partecipato a numerose manifestazioni sul fumetto dove erano presenti i lavori di Zograf.
L'autore è stato pubblicato negli USA, in Inghilterra, Germania, Italia, Francia, Portogallo, Bulgaria, Grecia e Spagna.

Il y a pas mal de monde dans ce petit port, sans doute à cause de la présence d'un café et sa terrasse... la chaleur donne soif !

Certains sont équipés pour la plongée sous-marine, et... il n'y a pas que des bouteilles d'air dans leur parage. J'espère que c'était "après", sinon le baptême promet d'être mouvementé !

Dans l'entrée du port, on s'amuse avec de jeunes goélands qui piaillent. On croise leurs parents un peu plus haut...

Il y a un peu trop d'agitation à notre goût, il faut presque faire la file pour accéder au promontoire rocheux.

On repart vers la "pierre tremblante"... Je crois que c'est sur ce chemin qu'on croisera un grand domaine interdit d'accès, de loin on aurait dit une ancienne carrière à ciel ouvert ?!

On se dirige vers la pointe de la Tranche, le point le plus austral de l'île d'Yeu. Les grandes plages commencent à faire leur apparition dès le village de La Croix...

Nous n'aurons pas le courage d'aller jusqu'à la pointe des Corbeaux, il fait trop étouffant et le soleil commence à me taper sérieusement sur le crâne.
Certaines plages ont des noms vraiment étranges... la plage des ovaires par exemple ! ^^

L'eau est froide mais pas glaciale comme on aurait pu s'y attendre... AàG ira faire quelques brasses pour se rafraîchir et accessoirement gagner une photo de mes pieds - oui il est fou, je sais.

Une belle méduse - on n'a pas tous les jours l'occasion d'en voir de si près...

On s'offrira une longue pause à chercher des coquillages dans le sable, mais la chaleur finira par nous chasser.

On enfourche nos vélos et on repart vers le nord.

Mes fesses commencent à être douloureuses avec cette selle de m****, les vélos homme ont l'air mieux conçu de ce point de vue (non mais quelle injustice, franchement).

On ne s'arrêtera quasi plus jusqu'à Port Joinville. On voudrait avoir le temps de visiter la ville et de manger avant l'heure du bateau.

Le tour du port est assez vite fait, ainsi que la visite des quelques ruelles piétonnes.

Bien sûr, je garde mes manies photographiques habituelles ;-)

Une mauvaise surprise nous attend : les restaurants de l'île n'ouvrent qu'à partir de 19h (18h30 pour les plus précoces) ! Nous qui espérions manger tôt car notre bateau part à 19h... On trouvera par chance un café qui offre des croque-monsieurs à cette heure. Ca ne remplit pas une dent creuse mais c'est mieux que rien.

Du coup nous voilà avec un long temps d'attente imprévu avant l'heure du départ... on l'utilisera à une étude sociologique hautement intéressante, mais je ne peux pas vous en dire plus, c'est top secret ;-p

 But anyway---let’s get back to the contest ….. I know you’re just dying to know the answers, so here they are!  

Question: 

(1) MITS (Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems) of Albuquerque, N.M. announced “The World’s First Microcomputer Kit to Rival Commercial Models,” the Altair 8800 PC, on the cover of the January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics. Shortly afterwards, a couple of guys called MITS’ owner Ed Roberts and told him that they had a BASIC interpreter for his computer, the Altair.  One of them later went out to meet with Roberts, discovering on the plane that he and his partners had forgotten to write the loader for the program! He hastily finished writing the loader as he flew in to New Mexico and demonstrated the completed program, BASIC, at MITS headquarters to Ed Roberts and his staff. Fortunately the program worked, and Robert hired him as MITS Director of Software Development.  Who was he?

The story goes something like this…. Paul Allen and Bill Gates were friends who had worked with computers since high school. They had been following the development of microprocessors, and knew that they had tremendous potential.  One day Allen was walking across Harvard Square when he saw the headline of the January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics---“World’s First Microcomputer Kit to Rival Commercial Models”—with a photo of an Altair computer on the cover.  www.vintage-computer.com/1975.shtml  

He knew that this was what he and Bill Gates, then a Harvard student,  were waiting for. The Altair was a computer with limited capabilities and no software---yet at the time it was a breakthrough machine----other mainframe computers of the day were huge, expensive refrigerator-like contraptions---and here hobbyists had the exciting opportunity to own their own, affordable PC!  For 1975 it was like something out of a science fiction novel. 

Allen and Gates had never seen an Altair, but had designed a simulator for another business they had started together called Trafodata.  They knew it was possible, then, to design a software program for the Altair on a large PDP-10 computer.  Harvard just happened to have one of those, and Paul Allen took on the task of designing a simulator for the program they would be writing for the Altair. Bill Gates then started designing the Basic programming language itself. A third friend from Harvard, Monte Davidoff, worked on the math routines for the program.

Tall and bearded, Allen was the oldest-looking person in the group, so he was chosen to meet with MITS Director,  Ed Roberts to demonstrate the program the guys had invented. When Allen arrived at the Albuquerque airport, he expected to meet a professional in a business suit. But MITS director Ed Roberts was instead an earthy-looking guy who arrived in a pickup truck. Roberts’ company, MITS, was located in a dusty strip mall that also housed an office supply shop and a massage parlor. It was not exactly the Ritz. But Allen was not the only one who was surprised. Roberts was equally disconcerted when the software professional who was listed on Trafodata letterhead as  “President” of the company could not even afford the cost of an overnight stay at a local hotel!  Nonetheless, the next day, when the Altair had passed all of its memory tests and was ready for Allen’s program, the software that Allen and Gates wrote for the computer actually worked!

 Paul Allen returned home to greet his friend Bill Gates with a brand new Altair computer provided by MITS and a new title, “Vice President and Director of Software at MITS.”  

(2) The Rose Garden Arena, located at One Center Court in Portland, Oregon, opened its doors on October 12, 1995. The stadium, which is often used for concerts and other events, is the home of Portland’s professional basketball team, the Portland Trail Blazers. The guy who originally footed most of the $262 bill for the stadium also currently owns the Portland Trail Blazers. What is his name? 

 Answer: Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen.  Allen purchased the Portland Trailblazers from Larry Weinberg in 1988 for $70 million dollars. The team was his first major purchase since Microsoft went public in 1986, and his first purchase of a professional sports team (though it wouldn’t be the last).  The team is still a favorite with Allen, who recently spent millions of dollars on new players this year in order to give the Blazers a winning edge in the upcoming season. 

 (3)  Seven tug boat crew members were plucked from icy seas off Port Alfred a couple of days ago in a dramatic sea rescue involving the luxury super yacht, the 414ft. Octopus. The maritime drama started at around 2pm on 8/23/07 when the tug boat, called Douala Tide, mysteriously sank 31 nautical miles off Port Alfred in heavy seas. The Octopus was one of the first ships on the scene and managed to rescue seven crew members of the tug. Who owns the Octopus?  http://www.dispatch.co.za/2007/08/24/Easterncape/abdrama.html  

Answer: Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen.  Allen owns the megayacht Octopus, which was at one time the largest privately owned yacht in the world. Allen was reportedly not on board at the time of the rescue but the crew members of his ship were the heroes of the day when they saved the lives of seven people during a violent storm near Port Alfred, South Africa. The 414 ft yacht crew responded to a distress call that was sent out to whomever was nearby, and Allen's ship was large enough to withstand seas so heavy that rescue teams could not come close to the area  for several hours. 

 (4) The Seattle Seahawks football team was purchased in 1988 by real estate developer Ken Behring.  Eight years later, when Behring decided that he wanted to move the team to Los Angeles— much to the chagrin of Seahawks fans—another guy stepped in and eventually bought the team, thereby keeping it in Seattle. (For fun, check out this article from The Seattle Post-Intelligencer written in 1996: “SOS: Seahawks Mess Not About You” by Laura Vecsey. (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/archives/1996/9604030018.asp )  In 2002 the new owner helped build a new stadium in Seattle for the team called Qwest Field. In 2006, this same owner took the Seahawks to SuperBowl XL. Who was he? 

 Answer: Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen.  If you have a chance, read Laura Vecsey’s editorial (above), written at a time when saving the Seahawks and keeping them in Seattle was a Quixotic dream held by a few  diehard fans. In 1996, SOS—the Save Our Seahawks group  who showed up to meet the players on their expectedly brief return to Seattle---were thought of as the “poor betrayed fans, who go down fighting like Don Quixote against the windmill.”    Enter Seattle’s Clark Kent, Paul Allen.   Although Allen’s father played football, Allen bought the team before he became an avid football fan, more than anything else as a favor to his hometown. The postscript for this story is that Allen purchased the Seahawks and then helped to build a stadium, eventually taking the team to the Superbowl. Check out this video of Allen raising the 12^th Man flag at the NFC championship game the year the Seahawks went to the Superbowl. (5)  The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is one of the largest charitable foundations in the world. The Foundation was established in the year 2000 and is dedicated to “bringing innovations in health and learning to the global community.”   Who founded the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation?

What the Gates’ are doing is truly heroic. See this excerpt from Time Magazine:  

“Every year malaria kills 1 million people—most of them African children under age 5. When Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, 50, and his wife Melinda, 41, were looking for ways to give away their prodigious wealth, they assumed that such monumental problems were being worked on. Instead, Melinda says, they found a "vacuum that does need to be stepped into." Step they did: the Gates Foundation now provides more than a third of the world's entire malaria-research funding, and it's paying off. The most effective drug to treat the disease, naturally occurring artemisinin, is in devastatingly short supply. But last month Gates-funded scientists announced that they had created the technology to manufacture artemisinic acid synthetically. ”In the late '90s, Paul Allen was renting a video when he saw a petition
to save Seattle's Cinerama Theatre from being razed to make way for
downtown development. The Microsoft mogul remembered the theater from its 1960s
heyday, and he loved its giant screen. He signed the petition.

And then -- you see where this is going -- he bought that whole block
of Seattle, including the theater. Through his holding company, he spent
millions of dollars to restore the Cinerama to its groovy glory, complete
with retro mohair seats. At the same time, he updated the

I was thinking about this sometime last year when I told a friend that I thought that everything in the world could be linked to Paul Allen within 6 degrees. You've heard of the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game, right? Well, ironically, a few days after I said that to my friend, I read that Paul Allen and Kevin Bacon were performing together on stage aboard one of Paul Allen's yachts during the 2005 Cannes Film Festival! 

 Six degrees of Separation is basically the idea that anyone can be connected to anyone else through a chain of acquaintances with no more than 5 intermediaries.   One day I was playing around with my laptop and thought it would be fun to invent a new game based on that theory called "Six Degrees of Paul Allen." The point of the game is to try to link Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen with anyone or even anything---within 6 degrees. And that's how this blog was born.

On September 4th, this blog will have been around for a year.  And I have to tell you, it's been a blast! I’ve spent last year trying to find new links between Paul Allen and remote celebrities and even historical figures from a 100+ years ago and that task has been easier than I thought it would be—which leads me to believe that the Six Degrees -- "Small World" theory might actually be true, especially when it comes to people like Allen, who really get out there.

Since this is an Anniversary issue, I thought it might be fun to do something out of the ordinary---so here is the "official" Six Degrees of Paul Allen Anniversary Contest.  Unlike the used salad shooter and the video tape rewinder in the shape of a sports car, there is actually a real prize for this contest---a 1 Gigabyte USB Drive (see below). 1) MITS (Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems) of Albuquerque, N.M. announced "The World's First Microcomputer Kit to Rival Commercial Models," the Altair 8800 PC on the cover of the January 1st 1975 issue of Popular Electronics. Shortly afterwards, a couple of guys called MITS' owner Ed Roberts and told him that they had a BASIC interpreter for his computer, the Altair.  One of them later went out to meet with Roberts, discovering on the plane that he and his partners had forgotten to write the loader for the program! He hastily finished writing the loader as he flew in to New Mexico and demonstrated the completed program, BASIC, at MITS headquarters to Ed Roberts and his staff. Fortunately the program worked, and Robert hired him as MITS Director of Software Development.  Who was he?  

2) The Rose Garden Arena, located at One Center Court in Portland, Oregon, opened its doors on October 12, 1995. The stadium, which is often used for concerts and other events, is the home of Portland's professional basketball team, the Portland Trail Blazers. The guy who originally footed most of the $262 bill for the stadium also currently owns the Portland Trail Blazers. What is his name?  

 3) Seven tug boat crew members were plucked from icy seas off Port Alfred a couple of days ago in a dramatic sea rescue involving the luxury super yacht, the 414ft. Octopus. The maritime drama started at around 2pm on 8/23/07 when the tug boat, called Douala Tide, mysteriously sank 31 nautical miles off Port Alfred in heavy seas.
