Il primo mobisode, ovvero i mini episodi di Lost creati apposta per i cellulari di utenti americani, è intitolato "the Watch" e vede Jack e Christian discutere alla vigilia del matrimonio di Jack dell'essere marito e padre.

Mobisodes – ‘Mickey Mouse’ Content No Longer?

To celebrate Donald Duck’s 73^rd birthday, the Walt Disney Internet Group has launched a 13-epsiode series of Donald Duck mobisodes exclusively on its Indian WAP portal. At the same time, TV channel Comedy Central recently announced that a new cartoon series, ‘Lil Bush’, which started life in mobisode form, will air for the first time next week on US television. There’s an interesting contrast here between a media giant “mobilising” a global brand, while new content created specifically for the mobile environment moves in the other direction.

The Donald Duck series, called “Donald Duck: Lost in Time”, will be complemented by a variety of other mobile content including wallpapers, ringtones, games, trivia and short animations. Like the recent launch of “Sprite Yard” in China, the fact that Disney decided on an Asian release highlights the increasing importance of these huge new markets for consumer mobile content services.

Meanwhile, ‘Lil Bush’ will be the first mobile-originated content to be aired in series form on traditional TV. The show satirizes the behavior of various American politicians as it may have been when they were all children. Will it be a success? Well, it’s already survived and thrived in both the mobile and fixed Internet environments, and TV commissioners have been impressed enough to put pen to paper. But the success or failure of one project or even the mobisode format is not the key issue here.

Mobisodes have been derided in the past as being a fad that will fail to bridge the gap between ubiquitous mobile device ownership and widespread consumption of mobile content. But if that’s the case, then why are media giants like Disney still investing in new content for the mobile environment? And why are content creators choosing the mobile format over more obvious media channels?

It’s easy to be cynical, but revolutions in the way content is consumed do not happen overnight. Neither are they all encompassing. Radio, TV, print publications, and the Internet (fixed or mobile) all coexist, overlap and will do for many years to come. The reach of mobile-originated content will be extended via the Internet and network TV much more often in the future. But mobile lifestyles, devices and content really are converging and evolving to create new ways of producing and consuming content. These announcements show that mobisodes are a good, if early example of that.
