Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) announced yesterday that that they will be integrating Microsoft Live Search into Facebook. This really should come as no surprise since Facebook can thank Microsoft for their excessive valuation - the least they can do is allow Microsoft to promote Live.

It remains to be seen if Microsoft can do a better job, then Google with Myspace, monetizing their search partnership. Back in 2006 Microsoft was also in contention for Myspace's search rights but they lost to Google. As I've noted in a couple of previous articles, Facebook Worth & Facebook Revenues, Microsoft's $15 billion valuation of Facebook is almost three times higher then the next closet valuation. Microsoft's valuation of Facebook is still absurd but I'm sure a lot of the reasoning behind it was to guarantee that Google didn't beat them again.

Internet Explorer

INTERNET OPTIONS

Microsoft has struggled a lot in internet space. Google with its innovative ideas and amazing speed

Microsoft has struggled a lot in internet space. Google with its innovative ideas and amazing speed in launching a product has been far ahead in the key Search Engine market.

So, it is like a breath of fresh air to see Microsoft get a product right, the first time itself. And that too a web product! I am talking about Microsoft's New Cashback program for web users. Cashback is program under which Microsoft lets you search for best prices for products online. In this post I am basically talking about the UE aspects of Cashback program, and not the business model behind it. From a business standpoint it is an aggressive and very interesting move by Microsoft Live.

There is a simple, non intrusive promo for Cashback on Microsoft Live homepage (see below, the orange arrow in mine!). Note that there are only two graphic icons on this screen – the Windows Logo, and the Cashback $. A very nice and clean way to direct user attention.

The homepage of Cashback is given below. The direct URL is http://search.live.com/cashback

What do you see in the page below?

Search bar at the very top – to the users searching for products they wish to buy. The bar is big, clean and very apparent.

No ugly unnecessary graphics on the page. No glassy style images. Again, there are only two icons on the page – the Windows Logo and the Cashback Logo. The latter one is quite big to promote the recall. Could be a bit smaller, but fine.

A small gray box in the left column to get the first time users started, containing links to FAQ etc.

4 distinct categories with associated product graphics to get first time users to try the service with one click. Simple. Brilliant.

For users to explore other items, there are a bunch of links below these 4 product categories.

The page above looks simple but the amazing amount of detail has gone into it to keep it like that. Lets take a closer look!

Only Arial font is used throughout the page. This keeps a clean, consistent style. Note: the footer does use Verdana font ("Advertise | Webmasters | etc"), and this doesn't make sense especially because the blue header uses Arial, but let's forget this for now.

There are no irritating mouseover effects. I dreadingly took my mouse over the Zune graphic, expecting it to grow like MSN Live Image search results, but to my surprise it stayed the same size. Simple. Great. The only mouseover effect the page has is on the "Compare Prices" buttons, and that is done in a very classy manner.

Lets look at the colors users. The golden on the dollar coin and simple green on the "Compare Prices" buttons are the major colors. Again simple and great. If you look closely below the Zune image you'll see that the price is in bold red. Its not actually red color but RGB: #F15D25. The color is not as bright as Red and is quite nice. Look at text "at 4 stores" below Zune. It is a shade lighter than the other gray. Very good use of color and typography to keep the page simple and yet convey the information in a nice, readable, friendly manner.

Lets click on Zune Image now! The following page appears. It is again a treat for the eyes.

The page, like the previous one, fits in my first scroll.

The page has a slightly bigger image of the product (Zune) which makes sense. The Cashback logo is smaller, on the right. No other major graphics on the page.

This page is not meant to provide you detailed information on the product. If you are research for Zune, then you may be better served elsewhere. There is only one product image, and only a small blurb on the Zune. However, if you already know that Zune is what you want, then this works perfectly. I feel that "more" link at the end of the blurb which could take user to the manufacturer's detailed spec page would be helpful.

Again only Arial font is primarily used, with nice reuse of green in product title.

The URL is somewhat SEO friendly with no query strings - http://search.live.com/cashback/products/offerings/5057/9508994 Although I think it could be made simpler, by taking out "offerings" and one of the numbers in the end (you basically need a unique product id, right?)

The remaining portion of the page is a treat. It combines a tab interaction model with a spreadsheet like design look. The stores are listed in the order of Bottomline Price. This is the price that the product is basically going to cost you. The right side shows the price and discount information in a simple spreadsheet-like manner. Very easy to grasp. The cashback is red in color. I assume that since I am not logged in right now, the Tax and Shipping is showing $0. Some information about the selected store (NewEgg) is given below the pricing information.

There are only two things a user can do on this page. One, select an alternative store, and two click on the "Go to Store" button. Simple? Great!

Clicking on "Go to Store" brings up the following signup/register page.

Note, how cleanly the small icon of Zune and the store log is presented on the left side.

At this point, I sign up for Cashback, and then click the "Go To Store" button. Sign up is a breeze! Just need to verify my email address, but need to have a Windows Live ID (something that Microsoft could avoid).

I see the following page for a few seconds before being directed to NewEgg.com.

In the page above, I wish that the important note that the bottom of the page could be much larger and clearer. Next I am on NewEgg.com. I see a cookie named "ForeseeLoyalty_MID_F9hkVI8gwR" which is set to expire at the end of session. Assume this will be used to track the source and cashback savings on NewEgg.com.

Well, as I try to complete my purchase on NewEgg.com, I am unable to find the "Proceed to Checkout" button. And then I notice that Zune is out of stock!!

Cashback Team: You need to fix this – the first merchant of your first product does not have it in stock. Either the Cachback program is working too well, or you have overlooked something basic. Replace the Zune with an Xbox or something for now.

Some more thoughts:

I did a couple of book searches, but did not find Amazon as a listed store. As I tried to compare prices, Amazon still wins hands down.

There was one book I was trying to search on Live Cashback and did not find any matches. This seemed strange. I then copied the ISBN number to Live Cashback search, but again nothing, nada. I found this quite strange.

I searched for "Jeffery Archer" and got no results. Expected the system to work like Live.com and suggest me alternate search on the correct spelling "Jeffrey Archer".

I searched for "ipod" on Live.com, and 2 of the top three sponsored ads up top had a Cashback button (see below). When I clicked on the second ad, I went to eBay results page for IPod. At this point, I don't know if the Cashback is on or not? All I see is a small notification at the top – "Buy It Now with PayPal and you may get cashback. See conditions". As a user, I would rather just know if I am getting Cashback or not without having to read the 500 page conditions document.

Cashback program seems to be somewhat at odds with the Live Products site - http://search.live.com/products. At the bottom line, both offer best prices on searched products, but work differently.

This is a first look at Live Cashback. I didn't delve too deep to explore its categorization and search features. Overall it is good to see a superbly designed and clean web product from the Microsoft Camp. This product team has got it right.

We know that google crawls the fastest, yahoo! second, with msn live falling way behind. . . as if they just don't really care about time sensitive material.

The big questions is. . . which one of the "big three" favor themselves more than any other?

Well, according to SEO "experts" msn live gives much more Microsoft material compared to any other search engine. That tells us they push themselves, but what about pages that aren't related to them but point in some way to them?

Selecting one of these subjects, say Christina silva miss california, and beyond the 20 results returned, you can opt for Video – which brings back lots of Youtube content, which will automatically play when you roll-over. That's serious browny points over Google News – especially as much of this content is syndicated – and perfect for embedding in your blog. And there are other filtering options too – Click on the More drop-down above the results, and you can select from mapped content (if you are searching by place), classifieds, feeds (not particularly up-to-date this section, I decided after a couple of searches) and some others.

In terms of the conventional written news content, MSN's seem significantly under-sourced and behind the times by comparison with Google's. A search for Carlos Cuellar (for those of you unfamiliar with the vageries of Scottish football – Glasgow Ranger's star player, playing tonight in a crucial Old Firm game) returned 121 results, the latest being some 7 hours ago. 7 hours! Over at Google, there were 450 results, the most recent (if you order by date, rather than the clustered groups which are default) less than an hour ago.

Of course less sources means there's no need for the clustering 'relevance' ordering Google News does – which it has to be said has its strengths and weaknesses. That is to say, sometimes the subject of a news search will feature in more than one story breaking at the same time (say Gordon Brown visiting America, and speaking out about Zimbabwe), which falls awkwardly somewhere between relevance and date ordering. And in this sense, having less content makes it easier to chose what to look at. Of course some of the 4,500 sources Google News boasts duplicate each other, so in that sense it is beneficial to cut through the chafe.

Google I'd argue still has easily the upper-hand in terms of personalisation. That is to say, you can organise the page around your subject areas, and even create your own bespoke sections, based on an alert you can set up with your own key-words to return you personalised content.

Google also has a news archive search, albeit much of the content here is subscription only. Hence why its always a good idea to inquire at your local library to find out if they carry either NewsUK or Newsbank.

So maybe its a bit early to be drawing cast-iron conclusions – but for now I'll be sticking to Google News. And Newsnow, and Digg (you cannot whack a bit of serendipity when your looking for news). And Bloglines. And so on...

UPDATE: It's now the third of June, and still no local content for UK users. Tut!

According to Compete.com, Googled ushered in the new year with its largest search market share to date - 68.6%. Up almost 7 percentage points in comparison to January 2007 - Yahoo declined 6% during that time and MSN remained relatively stable.

The interesting analysis to these numbers is that the top five search engines (Yahoo, MSN Live, ASK & AOL) combined don't equal half of Google's market share. Actually the combination of all the other search engines only equals 30.8%. Yahoo + MSN Live = 25.4%. This obviously gives Google a lot of capital to work with. Capital that is enforced on websites who must abide by Google's rules of search engine optimization or else pay the consequences. This gives Google monopolistic control over websites whose sole existence relies on Google. If the website violates one of Google's rules (many times unwittingly) they then could be banned from the directory thus ceasing the vast majority of their traffic. It's to bad that in cases like these websites can't have peace of mind knowing that MSN and Yahoo would be able to pick up the slack. There will come a time in the near future when websites give up on the one search engine internet that we see today. PPC has already priced out the small players and SEO can cost $100,000/year thus making organic rankings out of their reach too.

As I mentioned in Future Search Engines there must be more to the combined (if it happens) Yahoo and MSN merger then just grabbing 25% of the search market. First of Microsoft is sacrificing the present (most noticeably in stock price) to become the reigning online king in the next 5 years. Search will most likely take a new approach in the next five years and Microsoft (and I'm assuming Google too) knows this. Knowing that the internet is becoming a crowded place that will soon reach a saturation point (which means decline PPC income) search must create a new radical platform to placate the small to mid level internet companies & websites.

The third day, I become more relax & casual with colleagues in the office. Well, particularly to my assistant & the girls from the other division as well. We talked & joked around a lot too. I helped the other girl to troubleshoot her computer connection but the cable seems to be the problem. ha.ha.

Things that I learned today: how to handle photocopy & fax machines. LOL. Even though I got a fax machine at home, but I don't really bother to learn how to use it. I learned the process of the EIA too; what kind of letter shall I send to the EPD, the client etc, number of copies & so on. I learned the other division task as well. Theirs job looks more fun than me. Monthly or quarter yearly they have to go to the site & bring back qualitative or quantitative samples & the make report out of it.

My nature of work would be more into making report, chasing client for project plan & other details, site assessment & even socio-economic survey. Argh. On top of that, EIA supposed to be a group project; it means that a few experts in different field will make the report (i.e. Biologist, Socio-Economist, Geologist and any other expertise depending on the project). The assistant told me just now, in this firm, those executive assigned to that project will do the WHOLE report. I was like, OMFG! 1 EIA report is like 1 Thesis project. AND I have to do at least 4 projects in a year! SO, 4 F-in' thesis-like report I got to do! Argh! Sounds F-U-N.

Anyway, my first project scoping note send to the EPD today. I didn't do the Scoping note though. But I did compiled it & draft the Terms of Reference for the project since I don't know what else to do in the office. I did help d monitoring division to bind etc their report to submit today to the EPD too.

Othe than that, I managed to download MSN live to my computer. LOL. They put some restriction to connect to the net by one of my colleague managed to pass the password to me. *grin*

That's all happening today in my new life. Well, I'll update again real soon.
To people around the world, Happy new year! *gonq xi, gong xi* :)

Today Microsoft and Steve Ballmer announced their intention to buy Yahoo for $44.6 Billion in an attempt to take back search from Google. The two companies have a number of synergies (search, mail, instant messaging) whose operating costs will decline with a merged entity. This is all obviously good however this merger is all about search technology and taking a chunk of Google's profits. According to Ballmer online advertising is currently a $40 Billion business and he expects it to double to $80 Billion by 2010.

Can the combined minds of Yahoo search and MSN Live beat Google? I think both Yahoo and especially MSN have come a long way in improving their search results however the biggest burden with this merger is public perception - convincing people that a combined Yahoo and Microsoft means search. Currently when people think of search they think Google and even if the combined entity creates a better platform they still have to convince the public to change their routines. The technology could be the easy part.

Since all of us already have preconceptions about Yahoo and MSN it will be very difficult to convince us otherwise. With that I think Yahoo and MSN can beat Google by creating an entirely new search engine that combines the brains of both companies into a new powerful destination. A search engine with a new brand, name and destination (not MSN Live) that's not obviously connected with the new Microsoft/Yahoo and gives the appearance of a new fresh hot startup. This way Microsoft/Yahoo can create a new image of search that doesn't have immediate negative perceptions, all while collecting a larger chunk of that $80 Billion.

When Google came on to the scene one aspect of their algorithm that set them apart was PageRank. PageRank (PR) was calculated on a scale of 0 to 10 and based heavily on the number and quality of links to your site. Of course over time link farms & paid links were devised to beat the system, increase search engine results and therefore gain more traffic.
The link below is an interview that webproworld conducted with Microsoft - a search engine that is getting a lot better and not as temperamental as Google!! The video talks about MSN's stance on paid links from sites such as Text Link Ads. Google flat out bans paid links and your site will be penalized if you use them. MSN takes a softer approach and won't ban you for using paid links but they certainly don't recommend them.
One more thing!
I think MSN has come along significantly in their search capabilities and seem to do a better job indexing sites based on search engine optimization (SEO) practices. As mentioned above Google is very temperamental and bans sites at will - it's becoming quite annoying and I think opening the door for a better (and new) search engine. Unfortunately MSN is not used nearly as often as Google so even if you place prominently on their site you still won't get a lot of significant traffic. In the search business neither Yahoo or MSN will knock off Google mainly because they are old/established names that everyone already has preconceptions about. It will take a new smart startup to set Google straight.
MSN Talks Webmaster Tools

Sono davvero utili all'utente?

Welcome to my Eworld!

I am a kind of person who really explore and look for other alternatives to promote my websites and do networking, indirectly earning extra money. Alot of these free servers are available in the internet and it is only a matter of discovering them.

For example Yahoo.com which I normally used for daily emails. Ive been with yahoo since 1998 and during that time , the site does not have a dedicated page for blogging. Recently, I discovered that yahoo has its own link called Yahoo!360 degrees which allows everyone to create their own profile - where you can write daily journals, share photos and videos and of course networking with the rest of bloggers around the world. It was easy to organise my yahoo360 blog which I called, Ang Aking Simpleng Buhay (My Simple Life).

You will be surprised that all my entries are written in Filipino (Pilipino or Tagalog) which is my first time to do it. I think having this blog, it is a challenge for me to maintain it and solely for my mother tongue. It is indeeed a difficult task to write in my national language but it is a rewarding experience in the long term. Well, I was once the best in this subject when I was in my second year high school.

Finally, the MSN Windows Live website thru my Hotmail account. I found out that hotmail is quite popular in the UK compare to yahoo especially for students. I dont know why! Im guessing here - maybe it is because of its linkage to Microsoft Corp and majority of MS software are installed in every PC. Personal experience, Hotmail is not popular for being not a user friendly and having a limited storage capacity. But few months ago, MSN changed dramatically - from the screen window to higher storage capacity of 2 GB. Despite these improvements, still it cant beat yahoo versatility in terms of messenging and blogging. However, MSN Live offers an easy management of the account and one that interests me is the slide presentation of photos!

Ok folks, try to visit my latest blog at My Simple Espace - The best place to escape.

Hope you enjoy browsing them and I really encourage you to explore them and have it a go to have one!

9. Keyword nel tag Bold: "strong" e "b"
