Kerja di kantor ini dah masuk tahun ke 5. Itu kl dihitung dari pertama kali menginjakkan kaki di Palembang, kota yang dulu cuma disinggahin berapa tahun sekali cuma karena mampir ke rumah tanteku aja. Ga nyangka banget deh akhirnya menetap disini.

September 2002, aku lulus kuliah. Trs diinfoin sm sepupu di palembang kl Pusri buka lowongan. Duh Pusri itu apa aja aku ga tau... Smp dikirm fax lagi sm sepupu aku lowongannya. Akhirnya di coba deh masukin lamaran. Untung aja ada perwakilan di jkt jd ga perlu ngirin smp ke Palembang segala.

Januari 2003 dapet kerja di PT. T**P*T** yang bergerak dibidang kontraktor.

Ternyata ada surat panggilan tuk tes pertama tuk Pusri di S**KP* (kampus yang suka dipake tempat syuting sinetron). Untung aja waktu tesnya bukan hari kerja jd ga ganggu kerjaan aku.
Ternyata lulus trs smp tes ke7 (banyak banget yah tesnya) dan diterimalah aku di Pusri.

Tanggal 21 Juni 2003 dah smp di Pusri (pertama kali tau kl Pusri itu pabrik pupuk kayaknya pas pertama kali smp sini deh, lupa). Dan sekarang aku di tempatin yang emang bidang aku (teknik sipil).

Dapet jodoh disini. Ngelahirin anak disini. Smua dinikmatin aja even pertama kesini kaget banget ngliat kota 'mati' jam 21.00 (th 2003) ini. Tp sekarang dah familiar dan akrab sama kota ini (harus!).

A wonderful (& supposedly easy, but not well instructed piece of software that aids creatives in designing a portfolio site.

Anyway after a fortnight of struggling through i have gathered and collated some pieces and put together a nice little starter site.

This was the first draft. The roughest outline of what I had in mind.

Next I formed my theme, pulling colors from HipHex. I briefly tried to see what it would look like in a different format but abandoned that because it clashed too much with the information at the bottom.

3rd Draft I started to get frustrated and just started screwing around, making:

After that it was a simple process of changing the teeth to words, softening the edges, and hand-crafting the fonts along the top and bottom to make my final version:

Then I made a black and white version and a 4th of a page flier version.  I learned a few lessons about Portland poster rules: always put the information in the center. Pushing your information to the top and bottom is a bad idea with these kind of designs. The tops and bottoms are the first things covered, if not the whole poster itself. I also need to work on making the names a little more legible, an old design rule I threw out the window the closer I got to the deadline.

Now that it's all done we'll see if the posters did any good.

 

In Indonesia, we called it Jilbab. The Jilbab is a headscarf which is usually worn by Moslem women. This story is the result of my visit to poor village Cogreg in West Java in March 2008.

 

I met Erlina, a housewife with three school children and a husband who worked as security guard in her village. Erlina works everyday embroidering beads for headscarves purchased as piece work by a local supplier.

 

Erlina gained the embroidery skills after participating in a micro project - Embroidery Training with other women in April 2007. After implementing the micro project, Erlina can now embroider beads on headscarves. In one week Erlina is capable of embroidering 12 headscarves a week. Each head scarf takes about 4-5 hours embroidery. She gets a fee Rp 6.000 (33p) for 1 headscarf. Every month she can complete 48 headscarves which provides additional income for her family of Rp 288.000 (£16). Headscarves are collected by her supplier for sale at the market.

 

Is it too hard if you embroider one headscarf for 33p?

 

Erlina with other women in Cogreg village do just that. In poverty situations where everything for low income families is expensive, Erlina’s diligent work helps raise her family income with the only simple way she knows.

 

By given basic ability training to women, these simple skills can help low income families start on the process of eradicating poverty from their lives.

 

There are still so many Erlinas in poor villages that give us the inspiration and motivation to help develop family enterprise through simple skills.

Importance of the Logo:

Tamil is an ancient language and has been the mother tongue of the people of TamilNadu. It has a rich culture and heritage associated with it. Tamil is widely spoken in Chennai. To show the richness and closeness of Chennai and Tamil, the type used to write CHENNAI has been created in such a way that it resembles Tamil script. Marina Beach stands as an important landmark for Chennai. It’s the main tourist attraction and it comes first to anyone’s mind when they think of Chennai. So, at the bottom of the logo, there’s MARINA camouflaged as a wave along with the colors of the sea.

The swirls at the top of I show that the city stands for fun, frolic and joy. The color scheme is chosen in such a way that it aptly complements the qualities of the city. The yellow and red colors stand for warmth and scorching summer. The blue color of the beach complements this as it stands for cool.

I learnt reading Tamil while traveling in buses where I get to see boards written both in Tamil and English. I used to compare and contrast and started reading it! It came in handy while designing the identity.

Collateral:

I created sample designs of Tee's and cap to promote the brand. My friends and classmates - Sowmya and Varsha, created ads and postcards respectively and they can be viewed in the presentation below. Also, we'd the idea of printing the brand identity on the bus livery.

pertukaran aku dh di awangan...aku rasa disebab kan case tadik tu, mmg konfem la bos aku takkan lepas aku terus...takkan dia nk biar aku kuar then tinggal masalah tu kat situ..sape nk setelkan?...bingung sgt aku dibuatnye, nk proceed buat keje pun jadik tak reti dh...tatau nk start camne, nk setel camne...mcm budak baru blaja dibuatnye...serba tak kena...

d worst part bila aku ter pk untuk anta surat resign...tp luckily kewarasan tu masih ada, teringat mama papa yg hepi sgt masa aku dpt keje nih...apsal semudah tu aku nk give up kan, baru nk masuk 3tahun, cuma tahh laaa...campur baur, terkontang kanting....

tadik after work , dlm kul 7 aku gerak ke intan pj, amik membe yg duk kursus situ...dia mntk tlg teman ke midvalley beli brg...lupa jap pasal keje, duk jalan2 dlm mv tu...tp bila balik rumah, zuppp ingat hal keje balik..xnak ingat, tp dtg jugak iskkkk....nway, thanks to my fren, x sangka dia tlg isi minyak kete aku full tank! rasanye intengah-mv takde la minyak smpai 5 ringgit pun, terubat jap pening aku ni...esok2 bleh kuar lagik n top up lagik hahahaha

Anyway, I mainly worked on the Olympic sport by sport countdown with Angela who actually designed the whole look and feel of the thing and here's something I helped out on!

 

The MLA course was 2.0 immersion.  I am trying to keep up and find it hard if I miss a day or two to catch up.  When I read of people who follow hundreds of blogs I wonder when they sleep.

Web 2.0 is one of my current PLN.  Running is another, I just did swimming.  I would like teaching or teaching skills to become the next one.  I have been wanting to improve my teaching skills.

Hmm.  I will add the Learning Stick to my reader and see what happens.

btw.. it's a must to check out the "that was then....this is now" exhibit going on there. it stood out the most to me from the other exhibits.

This group exhibition is inspired by the artistic and socio-political climate of the late 1960s, and features artists united by the desire to mobilize art as a means of change. Divided into three iconographic themes—Flags, Weapons, and Dreams—That Was Then…This Is Now places these representations as central to artists’ collective aspiration towards progress.

The show was separated between flags, weapons, and dreams, but my favorite room was the flag room (though the explosion of weapons a few rooms down was great too), if just for the fact it had work from Barbara Kruger and David Hammons.
