My Western Digital MyBook 250gb hd died this morning. Or so I thought since it refused to answer my calls. Had a look on this inet thing and found hundreds with the same problem. Tried all the sugestions I could find and still no sign of life. So I opened the case(about 10 screws and quit a bit of pulling and yanking since the cover was bolted to the base plate where the hd sits). Inserted the hd in a free bay in the pc and connected it to a spare serial cable. And it works!
Which is good because otherwise I would have lost the last 3 years of personal photos and my music and film collection.
I have backups of some of my photos in places like flickr and stock agencies, but all the raw files and private(family, holidays etc.) photos would have been gone. So I learned my lesson and immediately started looking for a new external hd to be used for backups. Not too keen on going for WD again but seems like all external hds are suffering from the same problem(sudden death, no signs of illnes, no last goodbye).
Im off to have a Lipton tea.

Ueber Firewire erhaelt die Festplatte keinen korrekten Wake Up Befehl vom Mac Betriebssystem.
[...]
Western Digital Support" (Zitat Ende)

So after the post yesterday I sat around for a bit and realized that I truly did miss Ubuntu a great deal. So this morning I had to format the MyBook I picked up the other day to fat32 so I could move some things from system to the other. I know, fuck you too, there are thirty easier ways other than fat32, but I like it, so piss off.

I just got all the updates and what and as I discover handy-dandy little things i will post them and all of that happy horseshit.

So, about that post yesterday, I guess all I needed to do was see that in print and realize how weird it sounded to me.

So yeah, will talk later.

Since I’m going to be away from reliable computer access, I’ve been writing posts in adv

Since I'm going to be away from reliable computer access, I've been writing posts in advance and setting them to publish in the future. On May 27 I was trying to get several posts set up and ran into one disaster after another. So, I thought I'd make how I dealt with those problems into a blog post for the future (relative to when I'm writing this).

The first problem was with my Western Digital Mybook. I had some files on it I needed and found that it had stopped working. I suspected that it was the enclosure that had failed, rather than the drive, so I tried to take the enclosure apart. I found that this was going to be a problem-unlike the do-it-yourself enclosures, the Mybook has a case that is difficult to open. Earlier models were more accessible-you could unscrew the case and get to the drive. Here is another version as well.

Naturally, my version, the 500 GB Western Digital Mybook Essential, did not match these guides. Fortunately, Carlton Bale has an excellent guide to opening the case. I was able to get the case open and gain access to the drive. The next problem was how to get to the data on the drive. Fortunately, there is a handy device that allows you to connect an IDE or SATA drive via USB to a PC or Mac. The one I have works with 3.5 (desktop) and 2.5 inch (laptop) drives and came with a power supply and all needed cables. They are sold under many names, but you can get the type I have from New Egg here.

Although I got the Mybook for about the price I would have paid for a "bare" drive, I was not at all happy with it for failing so quickly. If you want an external drive and can use a screwdriver, I'd suggest that you buy a "bare" hard drive and install it in an enclosure. The enclosures are, obviously enough, designed to be user serviceable. Hence, if something goes wrong you can easily open the drive case and get the drive out.

The second problem was that I kept losing my broadband connection. This was annoying because web browsers tend to handle the loss of connection poorly-I have had Firefox lock up because of this. Also, if you lose your connection while writing a blog using Wordpress or similar blogging sites, your work will not be saved. If something goes wrong (such as the browser locking up), you can lose your text. As such, I'd suggest writing blogs in a word processor or at least pasting the text into one from time to time to make sure you have a backup if your connection goes out and your web browser fails you. At the very least, save often.

Dealing with broadband problems is challenging because so many things can go wrong: your software, your computer, your router, your modem, and the service itself. Troubleshooting is mostly a matter of trial and error and most broadband providers have poor service (just like most businesses).

If your broadband connection goes out, here are some easy steps to take:

1. If you have a PC running XP, go to Control Panels and select Network Connections. RIght click on Local Area Connection and select Repair. Let Windows do its thing and then try your browser again. You might have to quit/exit the browser and start it again. You usually do not have to restart your computer.

2. Some routers have handy lights on them that will tell you what is not working. If the power light is off, that is probably your problem-plug the router back in. If you have an Internet light and it is flashing, then there is a problem with your connection to the internet. If your modem lights say that your modem is connected and doing fine, then try resetting your router. In most cases, you'll need to gently jam a bent paperclip into a recessed reset button on the router. You can also try unplugging it. You might need to go and do step 1 after doing this.

3. If resetting the router does not work and your modem is lit up as it should be (see the documentation for your specific model), then try the following: unplug everything from the modem and wait a few minutes. Then plug the cable back in, then the Ethernet cord, and then the power cord. The modem will take a short while to power up again and gain a connection. You might need to do #1 and #2 after this.

4. If your modem is not lit up as it should be, then try the procedure in #3. If this does not help, then your service might be out or your modem might be defective.

5. You can also try swapping out cables, if you have some extra ones lying around. It is also very useful to have a second computer-if the second computer can connect just fine, then the problem must be with the first computer. It could be a software problem or a hardware problem (a bad network card or cable).

This post will hopefully lead to what I believe would the makings of a small book that i'd be able to publish soon. With lots of contributions from friends ofcourse.

I've lived with many types of personalities throughout my super extended college life. Some of the more memorious ones have taught me that what doesn't kill you will only make you stronger. But that comes at the cost of your sanity and general mental health. Always having been meek, i've almost grown accustomed to taking all sorts of contrived bullshit and accepting it instead of making a stand or confronting people and exposing their idiocies. I'd like to say though, that not everyone is fault free and I have my fair share of being in the wrong. But this book is mostly dedicated to people who would like to find solace in the fact that there are people out there who have survived the onslaught of the zombie populace of the college years. This might help you dissipate the frustration and lack of description of the myriad of college inequalities you may have to go through. I would also like to hear from people who have stories of merit that will further this cause and would be included in later editions of this book.

Ying, Yang and the weirdoes in between.
One major problem I had when I first moved into semi private accomodations in university was the fact that my roomies were utter pigs. The apartment was like a refuge for all things trash and decomposing. The kitchen sink was always full of dishes almost upto chest level. After a period of washing up every day to only have the condition reset the next morning, I resorted to a posting of a very embittered nature.

In between the gamut is my most recent roomies.

Extremely quiet.

This is a Version 2 model. Fifty quid cheaper than the older one at Amazon.co.uk - so be a bit vigilant if you pop there to purchase. This SHOULD be a penny under a hundred quid at the moment.

It has a shinier exterior than its predecessor and comes with a combined European plug/transformer (which meant it was a good thing that my Belkin Surgemaster has swivel sockets available as a twizzle was required to accommodate the new hardware) plus a mini-usb connector..... y'know, the one you haven't heard of and don't have a spare one of.....(?) hmm you also don't have a really, really LOOOOOONNNNNNGGG one - so if long cables are the cause of nassssssteh nassssteh nassssteh Delay Write Failures, at least THAT mightn't happen again.

My 500GB Western Digital My Book failed this week. From the time I first had it, there were moments

My 500GB Western Digital My Book failed this week. From the time I first had it, there were moments when it would pretend that it had "had it"...... but then it would revive, giggle, and we'd skip along merrily (verily !) together again for a time ; "borrowed time", as is now evident.

I thought we had struck a compromise when, following the Windows Delay Write Failure errors it threw at me, whilst I was demandingly (?) trying to edit film directly on it, I stopped employing it for intensive "live activities" and switched to using it solely for, sedate and sober, steady back-ups, pointing a (misguided ?) finger of accusation at the (over- ?)lengthy 5 metre USB cable that had been connecting it to my computer on some (possibly most) of the occasions when it "fell over".

FELL OVER

Fell over it certainly did, physically, on a catastrophic Sunday morning in January. [I DON'T KNOW] how violently it was knocked onto its side when two of my shelves collapsed and flung their burden of box-files at both it and its (supposedly Belt 'n' Braces) mirroring companion and [I DON'T KNOW] why it didn't (wind up wound down and) whine THEN instead of dying with NO (new) warning just dazed days ago.

Back in the moment of the mishap, it (didn't matter (!) and) didn't mutter a murmer of maleficence. I experienced something ~ no short of a MIRACLE in the midst of disaster ~ for, as well as scattering, if not (immediately) shattering, a brace of external hard drives (that had no chance to shield themselves from the rude impact), the calamitous, crashing cascade had dominoed my Desktop PC's monitor down onto the screen of my laptop - slamming that shut and splashed the dreggy contents of a cup of chocolate across the vents of the machine below...... and yet..... all the victims were survivors !!!

I was VERY lucky.

You can't have too many external back-ups (two is the minimum) and I've learnt from this, although thankfully not TOO harshly, that it is precarious to position these storage units so closely together that they could simultaneously be destroyed by the same shared fire, flood or, as in my dodgy (book)case, accidental avalanche.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

~ THEY MUSN'T & NEEDN'T BE SKIMPED ON ~

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My personal purchasing proves prices have plummeted ------>

External Hard Drive Expenses :

19th March 2002 - Iomega Peerless 20GB - £292.58

13th January 2003 - Iomega External 120GB - £213.70

2nd November 2004 - Iomega External 250GB - £156.98

26th July 2006 - WD My Book Premium 500GB - £185.02

4th December 2007 - WD My Book Essential 750GB - £99.99

19th March 2008 - WD My Book 2 Essential 750GB - £99.99

The insurance cost of protecting what is now likely to be DECADES of data is negligible.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway, the main purpose of this post was for me to share one last "clutching at straws" little piece of advice for anybody suffering from an external hard drive that won't mount.

You COULD try another power supply. When one of my Iomegas was not being recognised by Windows, I contacted their Technical Support and was told : "these things just happen," as far as they were concerned my drive was dead and all the data was lost.

Not so.

Not so AT ALL.

Nothing was lost.

The SOLUTION was to use another power supply cable. I had to buy the special Iomega one but it did the trick. I'd been put off the scent of salvation by the drive's case unit illuminating and the fans starting as usual..... there WAS power but not ENOUGH power.

I've tried a different power supply with the thwarted My Book - but THAT drive is clacking when it (presumably) tries to engage it's heads - but can't.

Gladly, I had the core of its store on a second back-up drive and I will back THAT up as soon as the replacement arrives d.v. there's no mean disaster in the mean time.

Just today I was asked if I used Facebook. I see people logging into Facebook in the library. The on

Just today I was asked if I used Facebook. I see people logging into Facebook in the library. The one time I saw the internet kiosk at Billings Bridge used it was for Facebook. Then there's MySpace. Near my age, I've not met a single person who doesn't use at least one of these services. Am I the only one who doesn't use Facebook and doesn't use MySpace?

If I'm not, please someone come join me in my quest for antiquity. I hereby start the RetroGeek club, where anyone can join if they don't use either Facebook or MySpace or other such services. Our goal will be to convert everyone away from these heathen services and back to tried, tested, and true methods of communication such as email and in-person meetings.

Our primary goal will be to protect ourselves from the Facebookers by barricading ourselves in wooden cabins, armed with holy hand grenades. Yes, you heard me, holy hand grenades. Our offensive strategy will be to unite the forces of good to battle the true evil of the social networking geniuses. Our secondary mission will be to eliminate television from the world.

I'm just joking. Besides, I'm saving my holy hand grenade for when I become a pirate. However, I am astonished at how quick Facebook came into vogue. In fact, four years ago when I started university it was an unknown quantity pretty much, and now it's ubiquitous. Is this really where the world is headed? More and more of our lives are being augmented by technology. Already people walk around connected to everyone else constantly. With cellular phones and blackberries, people can always keep in touch. Now with Facebook, part of the social scene is now on the internet.

I don't know all the pros and cons this brings. For one thing, having all this on the internet gives the typical city dweller the ability to react much more quickly to changes in their social circle. For instance, Bob decides to go out for drinks, and posts it on Facebook (keep in mind I don't exactly know the workings of Facebook since I've never used it, but I sort of know how it works from watching others use it occasionally). Alice then is able to see it if she happens to be a Facebook addict and responds that she'll go along. Moreover, Alice can check her Facebook easily at work and at home, or in class, or anywhere where there's the internet, and anything she does will be seen by all of her friends (I think this is how it goes).

Contrast this to email people don't check their email as often, and there is a different atmosphere surrounding email as well, and it's often for 1-1 communication.

Because everyone's Facebook is changing all the time, this causes people to check it. Its social features causes people to be drawn to it because we're just very social people. It's far more group social than email or instant messaging. I've seen people check their Facebook in class.

Thus people have the ability to always have the social scene at the fingertips. From my viewpoint it seems somewhat claustrophobic. Does anyone actually feel that way? I'm afraid I don't have any actual data on Facebook users and what they think. It just seems so alien and frenetic to me...

Don’t worry, its not actual Leopards. Monday was pay day and my treat for the month was to get

Don't worry, its not actual Leopards. Monday was pay day and my treat for the month was to get Leopard. Obviously its been out since October 29th but I wanted to save getting it till later. I had two main reasons.

1. Save my money

2. Wait till I had an external drive (Christmas present) and could do a backup.

So here's the tale of my upgrade.

I started off by clearing as much bumff off my laptop onto my external drive. This mainly consisted of movies and torrents I was in the middle of. Then I used SuperDuper to do a clone of my hard drive to a disk image on the Western Digital 500GB MyBook Premium drive, hooked up via Firewire (because it is supreme over USB2.0!). This turned out to be a bit of a mistake but I will come to that later.

Next, I was ready to install Leopard. I had chosen to do a Clean Install over an upgrade because my current user account was partially migrated from my old Pre-Intel Powerbook G4 (that was a lovely machine). My hard drive had crashed and I had only managed to retain a small portion of my data. Luckily I had most of it saved on various DVD's, and on my iPod (iTunes library). So I wanted to clean install to ensure that all permissions were correctly set, and also to clear up some of the crap that got added to it during various Terminal adventures.

So I clean installed. This took about 40 minutes maybe to wipe and install the OS. Then I went through the setup proceedure. I had sought advice from the MMUG and Drew gave me some good words of advice. So I set up my first user with the same shortname as my old. Now as you may not know, your account has a Name (i.e John Smith) and a shortname which unix uses to assign permissions to, and creates the basis for your home directory and preferences (i.e johnsmith). I used the same shortname for my new account, and booted into Leopard.

My next stop before getting my data back was to get the majority of my applications installed and up to date. I ran Software Update twice (which took a while. Thanks Virgin Media!) and was done. Then I needed to reinstall iLife '06 from my Macbook Pro Install DVD's. This took a while too (30 mins maybe) and then I was good to go. One more Software Update for iLife and we're there. (I will probably update iLife in the coming months).

So I was now ready to migrate my data. I plugged in my external drive, mounted my backup image, and ran Migration Assistant. I selected the disk image, and it correctly found all the user accounts. At first I was confused as it said I needed another 2.5GB of space free, which seemed crazy since my user folder was only 73GB and I had 95 to spare. I selected my user name and continued. I was then told that as the shortname already existed, I could import to a new user/shortname, or do nothing. Well that was no good. There second option was actually grayed out and that was what I wanted. Import settings and files into existing account. But I couldn't do that while logged in with it. So I quit MA, went into System Preferences and set up a temporary account, logged out, logged back in as that, and ran MA again. Sucess! I can select the second option. So I carried on and was finally at the end, where I could import my files. I was told it would take about 4 hours. Fine, I can go to bed, but in reality that time dropped quickly and became 1 hour 35 minutes. Fine I'll wait up.

So come 1.30am it was done. Account data back in, and most of my apps installed.

So what have I learnt as I now look to upgrade my GF's Macbook? Well I think it would be easier if I had just partitioned a 120GB drive on my external HD and cloned to that, then I could just import during setup and all be fine. But hey we live and learn.

So will this affect how I upgrade my gf's laptop? Not in the slightest cos I'm just going to do a standard upgrade after backup to image. She has no legacy stuff so she should be fine. She's a normal user, no terminal craziness or hackery.

If you have a Western Digital 1 TB drive or have the Access Anywhere software installed say goodbye to file sharing.

Originally uploaded by flow14

I finally got all the data transfered off my old external hard drive and onto the new one that Western Digital sent me. It took a few days but I wanted to make sure that no data was lost in the process. This was 150GB of pictures I was in fear of losing. Since the data was safely moved I started to edit a few pictures. I didn't get many edited but I had to post a few from the GWAR concert at Harpo's.

Some pictures from this concert as well as a few in costume people waiting in line for the show can be found at http://defoephoto.smugmug.com/gallery/3765668

I had a major setup recently when my Western Digital Mybook started freaking out. The external hard drive would just disconnect and if I moved it around some I could find a possition that it would connect again. After doing a bit of research I found a lot of posts that the power connector (inside the drive box) was probably bad. This seemed to be a common issue. I went to Western Digitals website and punched in my serial number. The website said that I qualified for a replacement! I wasn't feeling to good abount WD until this moment. I ordered my replacement and it came in the mail yesterday. Now I have to try to get the old MyBook to work long enough to get all the images transfered. Last night after 2 hours I was able to transfer about 100Gigs of picture files. I have about 150Gigs more to go then I can get back to editing some pictures that I have been putting off for over a month while trying to deal with the hard drive.
