Still practising the acrylic nail art. It's a lot harder than it looks.

doing my nails. har har. lame. nail salons here are quite expensive. to get your fingernails cleaned and colored is $10 and your toenails $12, this is the minimum price. so i choose to buy my own colors which only costs $1 a bottle, and which i can use over and over and over again.

i tried many different colors and style last weekend but i ended up with this pink and white polka dot.

haaay, i miss ate maret, my favorite manicurista, who knows everything about my nails.

The crystals are definitely more bling in real life and this photo fails to do it justice. Perhaps I can try to take some better pictures that captures the light better when I get the chance. In any case, I love it!

Steps:

(1) Use a nice aquamarine nail polish and colour your nails using the gradient effect.

Gradient effect:
i) Select a nail lacquer that is translucent.
ii) Paint one coat on the entire nail.
iii) Start from the centre of the nails and paint another coat towards the tips.
iii) Paint third and final coat at the tips of your nails.

(2) Working on one finger at a time, apply nail glue and stick on crystals, pearls and bullions.

(3) Apply clear top coat.

Tips:

(1) Technically speaking, you can stick on the crystals and other embellishments before the polish has dried, then apply a top coat to secure it. This works but I have found that embellishments lasts longer with nail glue, and I do not have to apply a top coat every other day to keep it in place.

(2) Before commencing on each nail, sort out the crystals that is needed before applying nail glue. This way, you can stick the crystals on quickly before the glue dries and you also do not have to scramble to find/pick up the crystals. (Crystals are small and slippery, it's not that easy to pick up with tweezers esp if you're not using your usual working hand). The glue does not dry that quick, but generally I find that the hold is strongest when crystals are applied while the glue is still nice and wet.

(3) Always apply cuticle oil! Nail lacquer can be very drying on the surrounding skin.

I was torn over whether to use Silver Glitter or the tiny little silver crystals that come in the Bridal Kit. I ultimately decided to just wing it with the glitter. I'm a major newb at nail art so I have to say - for a first attempt, I'm really pleased with the results.

First let me say, I am so sorry about the sub-par application and lighting, again. I'll be back to my usual application and lighting soon, I promise I'll get it together. Second, OPI The Thrill of Brazil is one of my favorite reds, EVER. It applies like butter. Opaque in one coat, perfect in two - this red shines like there is no tomorrow. Simply, gorgeous. For the blue, I used Rescue Beauty Lounge Dead Calm. It was great for this mani because it, too, is opaque in one coat. I was able to use just one brush stroke for the blue behind the stars. Finally, Art Club by Color Club - amazing. I've had the Bridal Kit and the Carnaval Kit for a while now but I've been stuck in professional-mani purgatory since the beginning of the summer so I haven't been able to try them out until today. And WOW, I love these nail art polishes. The super long ultra fine brush is incredibly easy to use. The kits in general are pretty great. They come with 4 or so nail art polishes in assorted colors or glitters, decals, beads, stones, and other cute little accents.

To celebrate my nail freedom in exactly one month, I'm planning on breaking out all my accumulated nail art products. Seriously, I've been stock piling nail art supplies for a few months now in anticipation of a ridiculously elaborate nail art week on The Polish Addict, so if you're secretly into the kitsch, like me, stay tuned.

I spent every day in the sun wearing factor 15, even when it looked like my skin was growing immune (and already had good color). I also used a tanning oil which helps achieve a darker glow. Obviously you need to keep sunglasses on, but I like very big shades (some might say ludicrously big shades) to protect the very delicate eye area because, remember girls, this is the area which will wrinkle first.

So what's the plan of action now I'm home and feeling all down in the dumps? Firstly, moisturising is the key, i am presently using a heavy body moisturiser as well as taking cooler showers, so as not to dry out my skin and very gentle exfoliation. I am also planning to continue my fake tanning ritual. Every second day, I will carry out the tanning process (remember ladies pay attention to heels and areas of the body which can be easily forgotten). I also got my pedicure jazzed up with a discreet-looking nail stamp. I visited the Las Vegas Outlet mall to buy myself a new leather bag (i spilt a daiquiri on it at some Las Vegas bar..whoops!) and a lady tested out these new, super easy nail designs on my pedicure. I am also planning on keeping in the sun as much a possible so that the constant exfoliation and sunlight will help keep my skin as blemish free as it currently is.

What's going to be harder for me though ladies, is maintaining a positive outlook now my vacation is over.. and going back to work sucks....

And this is actually pretty tame and classy compared to the nail jobs I saw on some of the girls on Japanese TV shows- there was a New Years special with Natsuko "Gal" Sone (professional competitive eater and J-pop star) downing 20lbs. of sushi... complete with gigantic plastic bows and flowers popping off her fingers. I was so scared she was going to choke on her manicure accents.

So naturally, I hunted down a nail salon in New York that does this style of manicure. Valley NYC. They're on Orchard Street (oh course! Duh! I should have known!) and not only sell clothes, wax, and do nails, but you can order a bowl of acai berry to enjoy while you're getting worked on. In Japan, it can cost around $150 for a full set. I'm guessing it will be the same here. Maybe I'll just puff-paint my own nails or glue on some quarter machine toys. It kind of looks the same.

Or maybe I'll stop being really ridiculous because, come on. This is kind of ugly.

edited June 16th to add: after doing loads of research, I believe some of the flowers and things are called "ceramic flowers", but are actually little charms made of fimo clay that sometimes are glued straight to the nail, but sometimes have a post that is glued into a hole drilled in the nail! But most of the decoration is done with a 3D acrylic powder mixed with a bit of monomer... I found a video here that shows someone making the 3D flowers...

The other part of me knows how restrictive those long/ornate nails can be, especially the type with large flowers, linking chains and danging ornaments are. To wear such nails to me harks back to living a passive, domestic lifestyle - you can't do any work beyond sitting there and looking pretty or you might break a nail - and don't even think about how slippery typing on a keyboard could be! That being said, I have been working in a cafe till now and I found it hell on my nails and hands so I had taken to wearing fake nails for going out and to protect my nails whilst I worked. They were just plain pink and white French tips that lasted a surprisingly long time too.

Right now I'd found a set of more ornate nails that goes awesomely with my polkadot Metamorphose dress:

But there are defiantly more ornate, heavy and decorated nails available out there and are sought after especially in lolita circles. Recently I found Yuki Umi's nail photobucket to see what I'm talking about. I think these sorts of fake nails are a great touch to any lolita outfit and I'm getting used to wearing them myself - just don't be surprised if I'm chatting to you and my words are more miss-spelt than usual :3

So, after the last paper (YES) And celebrating half the class' birthdays (I don't have pics.. didn't bring my camera :( ) I took a cab to Pyramid and went gila gila. Met Meng Shuen and Su Shan there about halfway through, after getting my nails done. They were looking for a dress each for grad night. I'm still looking for the collared red long-sleeved shirt...

For about RM100 they can 'skin' ur laptops, phones, PDAs etc with crystals and 3D stickers and stuff. I make it sound lame, but it looks pretty good =)

I wanted to buy some new clothes, but didn't see anything much. =(

After shopping, I walked with Meng Shuen and Su-Shan while they looked for their dresses. We had lunch at McDonald's. Then, Su-Shan went off while Meng Shuen and I went back to college for rehearsal for the musical. I then squandered the rest of my day with candies, games, and comic books. XD

I think I'm mad, but I already miss work. I miss having something I HAVE to do. Hobbies seem more fun when you have to make time for them XD

Maybe now that I have 3 months on my hands, I'll get back to writing my stories. =) I also have to work with Jin on his our the story we're currently writing.

Most of us rely on manicures and/or weekly applications of clear nail polish to keep out nails looking their sparkly best. This process requires time and dedication but as they say "no pain, no gain". That is until I came across this: A buffer imbued with minerals from the dead sea.

The saleslady had me say 'hello' to my new nail after she buffed it and trust me, even an old hand at nail beautification gasped! Better yet its supposed to last a month she says to me. Now I am a little sceptical but the buffer, moisturising lotion and cuticle oil came at an affordable package price so I figured why not.

That was 3 weeks ago. Here are my nails 3 weeks since the one-time buffing.

In those 3 weeks I have washed my bathroom, done several rounds of hand-wash laundry, countless rounds of dish-washing...in short I've gone out of my way to test the minerals!

Those of you who want sparkly nails can head over to Suntec Tower 2 and look for the store among the carts...I vaguely remember it being by the "Royal Sporting House"...I think ;)

To avoid over-exposure I had to take the pictures without flash and so compromised on the colour. Think eggplant for the base and white for the design.
