Congratulations to Glenn from Stale Popcorn who did extremely well on this (although you'll be kicking yourself over number 9, Glenn). As Glenn points out on his site, he comes from the birthplace of Portia de Rossi and therefore may have an innate understanding of trash culture. Check out his site, it's grouse. Mr Fabulous correctly filled in the blanks, and we all had a good time.

So, without further ado, the answers are:

1. Bec Cartwright (Home & Away) - All Seats Taken

I'll admit I had never heard this song before last week, and I suspect I'll never hear it again. It certainly has the strangest lyrics of any song on the list - Bec appears to be using "dinner in a restaurant" as a metaphor for sex, but muddies the water with lines like "don't need no ticket, don't need no reservation" and "the DJ can take a hike". So it's not one of those restaurants you need to buy a ticket for, or has a DJ. Where the hell has Cartwright been eating? To add bewilderment to be-injury, the video clip takes place in a roller skating rink, and for a song that stresses there's no room for your friends - "it's a private invitation" - it features a lot of friends. And a DJ.

The worst lyric, however, is "I skip my entree, and stick to table water, I've got my main course for dessert".

Table water? Is that an expression anyone uses? It sounds like a particularly disturbing euphemism.

"How was the date?" "Well it started OK but then when the DJ left... oh, no, I don't want to... she said she wanted her main course for desert and suddenly there was table water. Everywhere".

2. Melissa Tkautz (E Street) - Sexy (Is The Word)

Oh Melissa, bless your precious heart. She had three big hits off her 1991 album Fresh - "Read My Lips", "Sexy (Is The Word)" and "Skin To Skin", and they were all poptastic. Since then she's followed a fairly traditional route: various cover versions, performances at gay bars, and - according to Wikipedia - "Tkautz has finished filming the new SBS comedy The Couriers, which will be shown on TV late 2008". And I'm sure will be just as hilarious as all those other recent Australian comedies. She also tends to release new versions of her hits every few years - here's a slightly sad clip of Melissa performing "Read My Lips 2008" on The Morning Show.

3. Stefan Dennis (Neighbours) - Don't It Make You Feel Good

As pointed out by Janet, this is probably the most mocked of all soap-stars-go-pop productions. It's quite amazing how early-80s this is. The musical production, the synth hits, the vocal style, the mannequins covered in gauze, the filming through a chain-link fence, moody Stefan walking down a dark alley before descending into a moody warehouse lair (or possibly just the David Jones window display storeroom), the lingerie models, gauzy Stefan having a dream-sequence... Everything about this screams "1984". So it's a shame it was released in 1989.

4. Holly Valance (Neighbours) - State Of Mind

I quite liked this when it came out, and I quite like it now. An amazingly accurate rip-off of Garbage, it was the only single off Valance's album of the same name. While the song went top ten in the UK, album sales were considered disappointing and Valance has since "retired" from music, focusing on acting. She also reportedly signed a £3 million deal with Schwarzkopf to promote hair dye, so don't expect to see her begging for change on Smith Street any time soon.

5. Stephanie McIntosh (Neighbours) - Tightrope

Not only had I never heard this song, I'd never heard of Stephanie McIntosh before last week. In fact, I've since read her Wikipedia page, and I've still never heard of Stephanie McIntosh. She apparently played "Sky Mangel" on Neighbours, which I'm presuming is a character and not a prop.

6. Delta Goodrem (Neighbours) - I Don't Care

Isn't the guy in this clip the most pathetic looking "bad boy" ever? Delta complains that people don't understand how good they are together, and why won't people let them be? I'm not sure that any parent would be too concerned about their daughter going out with this man - the amount of time he spends conditioning his hair every day wouldn't leave him much opportunity for corrupting your daughter... Oddly I've just finished reading a Sweet Valley High novel for an upcoming Great Literature feature, and it had pretty much the same plot as this video. Only the boyfriend was a vampire.

7. Toni Pearen (E Street, Home & Away) - I Want You

A slice of classic pop from Dancing With Who's That Then? star Toni Pearen.

8. Jason Donovan (Neighbours) - Nothing Can Divide Us

Strangely uncomfortable clip from Jason Donovan. It's odd that - for an actor - he seems ill-at-ease with the acting parts of this video. And the singing parts. I suspect I'm not alone in liking grown-up Jason a lot more than young Jason. Now Jason is a good actor who did a great job in MDA - Then Jason had a mullet. Case closed.

9. Kylie Minogue (Neighbours) - I Guess I Like It Like That

I was worried this might be too easy, but I may have gone too far the other way... and possibly also proved the Outland Institute demographic didn't spend a lot of time dancing at Three Faces in 1991. This song was officially the B-side to "If You Were With Me Now" and comes from an interesting period in which Kylie was attempting to move to a more adult contemporary sound with her A-sides, while the B-sides were gay-boy-friendly rave-esque dance numbers. As such, no-one really remembers "Give Me Just A Little More Time" these days, but you can still hear "Do You Dare?" at The Peel.

10. Natalie Imbruglia (Neighbours) - Torn

Two whole choruses were included here, so this one was a little easy. From The Secret Policeman’s Ball 2006, here's Natalie Imbruglia performing with Johan Lippowitz, an "Austrian interpretive dance artist" (aka UK comedian David Armand). She is currently working on her 4th studio album and has sold more than 10 million records worldwide. So she's doing OK.

Of course this is just the tip of the iceberg - I didn't include Bruce Samazan or the Blakeney Twins, for example. Go on, thank me. I recommend looking at this article from Pop Trash Addicts, where you can read about 14 more artists... It would appear the days of the soap-star-goes-pop may be over, as Australian Idol has now taken that niche. In fact, two Australian Idol finalists have since become actors in Neighbours, so perhaps the whole world is changing in ways both new and frightening. Or just rotating in the opposite direction, like at the end of Superman The Movie.

Το τραγούδι αυτό μου το έχει αφιερώσει η, επί χρόνια, κολλητή μου πριν μια 10ετία και κάθε φορά που το ακούω τη θυμάμαι... Δεν κάνουμε πια παρέα και αυτός είναι ο βασικός λόγος που το τραγούδι αυτό βρίσκεται στο top-10... Ακόμη μ' αρέσει και παίζει πολύ συχνά...

Το καλοκαίρι στην Πάρο που λέγαμε... Ίσως η μοναδική φορά στη ζωή μου που υπήρξα ερωτευμένος... Γνώρισα το Νίκο ένα βράδυ σε ένα ξενοδοχείο... Το κάναμε την επόμενη μέρα... Λίγο αργότερα γνώρισα την αδερφή του και έμαθα ότι είναι αδερφός της... Έμενε μόνιμα εκεί και τον επόμενο χρόνο έμαθα ότι είχε πάρει όλο το νησί... Τί μαλάκας εντέλει... Πρόκειται για ένα κομμάτι, το οποίο περιλαμβάνεται στο soundtrack της αγαπημένης ever ταινίας Great Expectations... Την έχω δει 150 φορές και, φυσικά, ξέρω τα λόγια απ' έξω... Ναι, είμαι κολλημένος... Δε θα μπορούσε να μην είναι στο νούμερο 1 όχι μόνο γιατί είναι ένα από τα αγαπημένα μου τραγούδια αλλά και γιατί κάθε φορά που βλέπω την ταινία η ψυχολογία γ@μιέται από κάθε διαθέσιμη τρύπα... Εγώ πότε θα ζήσω έναν τέτοιο έρωτα μου λες..?

O filme australiano independente lutou por algum tempo para conseguir recursos, mas foi filmado no final do ano passado em Adelaide, na Austrália. A história é baseada no romance de Georgia Blain, "Closed For Winter".
Em setembro acontece a estréia de "Elise", no Festival de Cinema de Toronto, no Canadá. Se bem sucedido no festival, o filme pode conseguir distribuição internacional.
Antes de se tornar mundialmente famosa, Natalie participou do seriado australiano "Neighbours", por 2 anos. Seu primeiro longa-metragem foi a comédia de espionagem "Johnny English", com o ator Rowan Atkinson. O filme desfrutou de grande sucesso no cinema em toda a Europa e teve uma boa recepção em dvd, inclusive no Brasil.
No momento, Imbruglia trabalha para terminar seu 4º álbum de estúdio, ainda sem título definido e sem data prevista para lançamento. Mas ainda em julho ela fará pequenos shows em Londres para testar o material do novo cd, então espera-se que ele saia até o final do ano.

Lo dice NME en su sección de rumores sensacionalistas (y viniendo de un semanario ya bastante sensacionalista de por sí, juzguen la credibilidad que pueda tener), pero de ser cierto juro que me pongo a llorar. Sí, de pena, ¡claro que de pena! Porque vamos a ver, la de Rhianna ya fue una colaboración forzadilla, pero 'Umbrella' mola y el resultado estuvo bastante bien. Pero... ¿Natalie Imbruglia? ¿En serio? ¿La de 'Torn'? Aparentemente, la cantante australiana y Klaxons estarían grabando una canción juntos en Londres, aparentemente para el segundo disco del trío británico. Aparentemente. Y esperemos que se quede en eso, porque si no...

Es handelt sich bei diesem Song, wie schon beim letzten Ohrwurm, um ein Cover. Torn stammt ursprünglich von der amerikanischen Rockband Ednaswap; das Original könnt ihr euch hier anhören. Die Australierin Natalie Imbruglia hat aus dem ursprünglich kaum erfolgreichen Post-Grunge-Song ein Mainstream-Pop-Lied gemacht, das ganze etwa auf die doppelte Geschwindigkeit erhöht und einen Halbton hochgesetzt, und schon war es ein weltweiter Hit. :)

Als Akkorde haben wir in den Strophen F, Am, Bb7, F, Am, Bb7, in der "Überleitung" Dm, C, Am, C7, und im Refrain dreimal die Folge F, C, Dm, Bb - also nichts Außergewöhnliches bis auf den Bb7-Akkord mit der Blue Note Ab.

Wie jeder ordentliche Popsong hat auch Torn einen 4/4-Takt; auffällig ist aber der synkopische Rhythmus der akustischen Gitarre, den ich gerne als "Jack-Johnson-Rhythmus" bezeichne und den wir fast genau gleich schon bei Over My Shoulder hatten.

Sehr schön finde ich auch das E-Gitarren-Slide-Solo am Ende, das mit gerade mal fünf Noten sehr simpel ist, sich aber wunderbar in den Song einfügt. (Übrigens ist mir die Ende-Neunziger-Zeit auch sonst als die "Zeit der guten Gitarrensolos in Pophits" in Erinnerung geblieben - man denke nur an Don't Speak, Unbreak My Heart oder sogar Out Of The Dark! Schade, dass sowas im Mainstream von heute nicht mehr so verbreitet ist. :( )

Der Text handelt - wer hätte es gedacht?! - von einer gescheiterten Beziehung. Die Sängerin ist dem bekannten "Rosa-Brille"-Syndrom zum Opfer gefallen; sie hat zu spät erkannt, dass ihr Liebster nicht der ist, für den sie ihn zu Beginn hielt ("Illusion never changed / Into something real / I'm wide awake and / I can see the perfect sky is torn" und "Should have seen just what was there / And not some holy light"). Was bleibt, ist eine Mischung aus Wut, Enttäuschung und verletzten Gefühlen ("You don't seem to know or seem to care / What your heart is for" bzw. "I'm all out of faith / This is how I feel / I'm cold and I am shamed / Lying naked on the floor" und dann "I don't care, I have no luck / I don't miss it all that much").

Im Video sind Natalie Imbruglia und Jeremy Sheffield Schauspieler, die ein Paar darstellen sollen. Das ist wohl ein Bild für die Beziehung, die im Lied besungen wird - die Liebe ist nicht echt, sondern nur Attrappe. Dass es bei dem Dreh im Video außerdem ständig zu Problemen kommt und das Set schließlich ganz abgebaut wird, zeigt, dass die Illusion nicht aufrechterhalten werden kann.

Alles in allem gefällt mir der Song richtig gut, und er hat definitiv eine Menge Ohrwurmpotenzial! Viel Spaß damit! :D

Hmm... To live in a world of fantasy, to wander in an unknown territory, and to fight the poison that's eating me, is the path that I chose. It ain't easy, I know I'm learning life the hard way. You might ask, why choose this path? Why would I choose a path full of intrigue, a path full of pain when I face the truth everyday and a path which is a norm for everybody else? It is because, I want to face this journey heads up! I don't want to run, I don't want to wear a mask like everybody else. I chose to be me. This is the REAL me!

They say, it is always a choice. I agree! And I chose to be like this. Hiding the real me is much more painful than facing everyone without the mask. I can always endure what OTHER people say. I don't give a damn! Who are they anyway? What matters are those people who I value and care. I might still be wearing something when I'm in front of my family, but... I know... I will... I will tell them.

Err... Now... What made me post that loooong post above? Errr... EMO attack again. hahah! Oh well... I'm just feeling something painful inside. ^^ A mixture of happiness and pain... like FIRE and ICE... Inside this heart of mine.
