Today is the day after and now is the morning after SOTM 2008. My overall view is that this was a better conference than the O'Reilly Where 2.0 conference held in San Francisco earlier this year which I had attended. Where2.0 very quickly turned into a launchpad for new startups and a launchpad for the bigwigs launching new features and products. Great as it was, SOTM was even better.

The only reason (in my mind) for this is Community.

Here's a community that has created this phenomenon which is just about ready to virally spread around the world. A community which is bubbling with energy and excitement because its growth is making the bigwigs situp and take notice. Not just take notice but then go and launch things like MapMaker, Map2.0, etc etc. Imitation is the best form of flattery.

The main reason I see OSM getting viral adoption and growth in the future is the pragmatism within the community. From the founders down everyone is already (only 2-3 years into its existence) asking what do we do now that we have (or very quickly acquiring) data? What applications can we build with this? What do we need to change to make OSM even better, make it a viable data choice for commercial uses ahead of the likes of TA and Navteq etc etc. Bravo!

On a personal note, today is my first day of adventure expedia. Here's hoping it starts well!

I had dinner with friends on Tuesday night (at Ketchup) that I hadn't seen in eleven years. It is amazing how much time can pass and all that can happen in our lives and how easily all of that time and space can be removed by a simple reconnection. We worked together at a little company called Navigation Technologies. It was a revolutionary concept that would digitally map out the world so a satellite in the sky could guide you and keep you from getting lost. It was far fetched and by the time I left in 1996 seemed like it was never going to happen. Now it is used in every GPS system, Mapquest, Google maps, you name it. What did I know? The 21 year old fool I was, I had my sights set on Hollywood and was just thrilled to be out of retail. I didn't buy a single stock option, but I can always look back on it as the job that changed my life... and humbly I still have the friends to prove it.

(above Mark Granovsky and Joe Noonan)

And just because I hadn't posted any in a couple of days, I had to share these two new photos of Gus as he rapidly grows, looking more and more like the prodigy of Lady and the Tramp. In the twist of his story, his cocker spaniel mother is the lady AND the tramp!

Blackberry sähköpostiluurien valmistaja RIMM kuitenkin nousi julkistuksesta 6% ja Nokia laski pari prossaa koska markkina uskoo ettei nämä uutuudet uhkaa Blackberryn menestystä. RIMMillä on n. 1-2% globaali markkinaosuus mutta markkina-arvo sillä on nyt peräti jo n. 80 miljardia taalaa (Kanadan arvokkain pörssifirma) kun Nokian markkina-arvo on n. 100 miljardia taalaa. Nokialla on kuitenkin globaalisti n. 40% markkinaosuus. Ericssonin markkina-arvo on n. 35 miljardia euroa. Olen täysin varma että RIMMin kurssi tulee sukeltamaan tulevaisuudessa rajusti alas vaikka Jenkkianalyytikot miten kuvittelevat että RIMM pystyy USAn ulkopuolella dominoimaan älypuhelinmarkkinoita kuten se dominoi USAssa. Never happens.

No summa summarum, minusta Nokia on järjettömän halpa ja kurssi tulee nousemaan. RIMM taas tulee romahtamaan.

When I was putting the closing values for the GGSI stocks into my spreadsheet, I thought it was going to be a horrible week. However, only a few stocks had some big-time losses. The index ended up closing lower 15.17 points at 1277.02. That is the lowest close since mid-April. There were 11 gaining stocks and 19 losing stocks.

Biggest winners - Microsoft (5.75%), Boeing (2.68%), Pitney Bowes (1.39%)

Biggest losers - Garmin (-12.52%), Yahoo (-11.23%), Oce (-10.60%)

News

Broadcom (-5.77%), SiRF (-9.90%) - Broadcom/Global Locate did not violate SiRF patents.

Deere (-4.17%) - New software for StarFire SBAS and RTK products.

Google (0.80%) - Parents upset about kids appearing on Google StreetView images. My opinion: There's nothing wrong with your kids appearing on StreetView outside your house. Not like it tells you the kid's name or anything. These parents don't realise that when they're in public, their kids are photographed hundreds of times a day without their permission. Are you gonna go after all the banks and retailers? What about when you go to an amusement park or sporting event? Lots of cameras there. Quit being such pussies.

GeoEye (-0.92%), ITT (0.95%) - Work continuing on GeoEye-2.

NAVTEQ (0.04%) - Issued a press release reminding people to update their GPS receiver's maps. This isn't just NAVTEQ trying to make a buck; they're trying to educate people. There are a lot of people who think updated maps magically travel through the ether to their GPS device. They don't know they need to connect to their PC for firmware and map updates (or insert an SD card with new maps). Updating your maps is excessive; perhaps updating every other year or every third year would be prudent. Though if you update every three years, you might just want to spend the extra coin to get a whole new GPS receiver with more features and the updated maps.

Trimble (-1.15%) - Swaps places with CSG Systems International in the S&P MidCap 400 and S&P SmallCap 600.

Users will also have unlimited access to Garmin Mobile's dynamic content such as traffic, weather conditions and forecasts, fuel prices, and more. The one-time purchase Garmin Mobile for BlackBerry is designed to meet the navigation needs of customers who prefer a one-time purchase rather than continuous monthly payments.

The company says that Garmin Mobile for BlackBerry is easy to use and offers users extreme utility especially when traveling in unfamiliar areas. Users can navigate to addresses in North America, or search millions of points of interest (POI's) - places like hotels, restaurants, shopping, and tourist attractions.

Once a destination is selected, Garmin Mobile for BlackBerry automatically calculates the fastest route to the destination, and provides voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions along the way. If a turn is missed en route, Garmin Mobile automatically recalculates the route based on the user's current location. Map data is provided by NAVTEQ - a mapping information provider.

Since Garmin Mobile for BlackBerry's mapping data is stored online and not on the BlackBerry device itself, customers can get up-to-date mapping information available directly from Garmin.
