Swingfly is back! It's been a while since I heard something new from Swingfly (I even heard rumors that he stopped rapping), so I was gladly suprised when I heard of this song (even though I like the video to Tony An's original song more). Swingfly has been a part of the Swedish hiphopscene for a long time and for those of you who listen to Swedish hiphop he shouldn't need any introduction.

The new track is called "Singing that melody" and features Bea on the chorus. The video (which seems heavily sponsored by NeoNode) is directed by Claudio Fransson.

Currently Swingfly's working on a solo album together with producers/writers such as the Åhlund brothers (Teddybears STHLM, Caesars Palace, Britney Spears etc) , Andreas Kleerup (Robyn, Titiyo, Marit Bergman) and Thomas Rusiak (Mange Schmidt, Petter, Ken).

C.E.S. had us longing for a bygone era of stylish electronics. Above, Dieter Ram's 1960-1961 T 52 Braun radio. (Latierrasemueve)

As Steve Jobs unwraps the latest designs from Apple at today's MacWorld conference in San Francisco, The Moment looks back on last week's Consumer Electronics Show. Though we can't claim to have seen every product, the trends were pretty clear: shiny black plastic, occasionally accented with color. There was a also a small retro movement evidenced by the return of the chromed-out boom box and several products featuring wood veneer. By Day 3 we started day dreaming about the seminal product designs of Dieter Rams for Braun and of Jacob Jensen, and others, for Bang & Olufsen. There were, however, glimmers of inspiration at C.E.S. — and here they are.

As you may remember, The Moment loved the new look of iRiver. The Korean market was the first to applaud the redesign. There, the Mickey Mouse-shape mPlayer MP3 device became a cult item — and not just with the junior set. Sure, it’s cute, but it’s also elegant and modern and comes in unexpected colors like brown and silver.

Product: MD-6 Mini Speakers
Manufacturer: Nokia
The small desk-top device conceals two speakers and a wire (to connect it to a mobile phone or iPod). We appreciate the flexible design — using magnets and hinges, the speakers emerge; a hidden compartment adjusts to swallow the ugly wire. The graphic, black and red color scheme recall Pop 1980s gadgetry. Watch an amateur’s high-light reel of the MD-6.

Manufacturer: Neonode
At C.E.S., there were too many cell phones to count. Only one really stuck in our head: the N2 from the Swedish company Neonode. It’s small, lightweight and uses a touchscreen — a stripped-down iPhone, of sorts. We liked the rugged matte black finish and its unusual form factor.

Product: P20 iAMOLED portable media player
Manufacturer: iRiver
Yeongkyu Yoo, iRiver’s designer, told us that he wanted this portable media player to appropriate the analog design features of a Leica camera. The metal housing, dials and flush-set buttons give it a refined, high-quality feel.

Manufacturer: Koncept
This LED desk lamp isn’t breaking news, but its sharp lines and high-tech light source were undeniably pleasing to the eye. It’s deservedly won design awards as well as accolades for low-energy consumption.

The specs on this point-and-shoot seem decent — 10 megapixels, a glass Schneider-Kreuznach Variogon lens (whatever that is), HD-TV compatibility — but what caught our eye was its clean looks: the brushed metal exterior, rounded edges, the absence of buttons (thanks to a touchscreen). There’s also something chic about the tone-on-tone type used on the camera’s front.

It is impractical, imperfect, overdone, striking, unique and beautifully crafted! Neonode N2 is loveable at first sight. Generally, a handset is not manufactured until it has gone through an arduous period of development and maturing.

Key features
Unique to the last inch
Great looks
Solid construction
Synchronizing options
Excellent headphones
Acceptable camera
Small size

Main disadvantages
Problematic universal port
No EDGE or 3G
No email
Limited 3-rd party applications compatibility

A monolith from the planet Neonode:-
Needless to go to lengths describing the Neonode N2 design, with all the pictures and video included in this review. 3D view is also available on the manufacturer website. Neither images, nor videos however, will ever get near to simulating the first hand experience with this device. Neonode N2 is a compact and exceptionally solid device, without a single movable part. It is made of matt plastics ruling out the dreaded fingerprints and scratches.

The number of keys on Neonode is minimalist too. You will find a volume-rocker placed on the side and, beneath it, the power button featuring a tiny sticking out knob for touch-orientation. This switch-off button is quite rigid and thus difficult to press. Other than turning the device on and off, it also unlocks the touchscreen.

Many users, including myself, think Neonode has MP3 player looks. No wonder, as it is extremely small of size and features no keypad. Talking about music, let's not forget that a good player should be matched by a befitting headset. The earphones in Neonode N2's retail package have a standard 3.5mm jack. The wired remote with a microphone serves as an adapter. The microphone module of the Neonode N2 handsfree is quite unusually shaped, in line with the one-and-only feel of the device. The headphones take after the headsets Sony Ericsson gives its high-end Walkman phones. Like the Walkman bunch, Neonode has headphones with ear buds, which seal out ambient noise and fit comfortably in your ear.

Windows, with a twist
Let's now move on with a closer look at Neonode N2's user interface. The manufacturer calls it Neno and it's like no other. That goes to say that we never got to know Neonode N1, said to be identical to the N2 in terms of user interface. Browsing the phonebook is another function of intriguing design, worth a compliment. It is completely smooth: items are scrolled by finger and when the contents reach the edge of the window, the list readily moves forward on its own. Finding a name in a long list of contacts is not a problem at all. Selecting a particular item is easy too: just scroll until found, select it and tap on the display. You don't have to tap on the very line, in which the item appears. Once it's been selected, a tap anywhere on the display will launch it, which is very convenient.

Old known applications in a new dress:-
Neno allows installing additional applications but it does not support the wide-spread Java platform. What's more, the entire interface of the phone is quite straightforward in line with its simplified and user-friendly system. On the other hand, it offers all standard functions: typing SMS and MMS, calling, time management and entertainment in the form of a music player and games. A simple web browser is available too, but GPRS provides rather low-speed browsing. There is no email client in the Neonode N2.

Surprisingly practical camera:-
The camera lens is hidden deep in the corner of the rear panel of the phone. On one hand, this solution protects the lens against scratches but on the other, the lens nest will gather dust with time. The pictures taken with Neonode N2 were a pleasant surprise given the minimalist size of its lens. Colors are a bit aggressive, the compression is too strong, but even so the final images are not bad at all.

Conclusion:-Coming up with a title for this review wasn't simple at all, never mind the choice of words. Neonode N2 is just cool. There's something about this device that just fails proper description. If you are of a certain age, getting yourself a Neonode N2 will make you the envy of your friends. And then, there is no doubt that the uniqueness of this device will inspire regardless of age.The device, of course, falls quite short of bringing all the contemporary functionality so many handsets are offering lately. Neonode N2 is a truly fascinating gadget. It is an excellent music player, it's a mobile phone and it offers good synchronization with PC. It is a fashion accessory, if you like. It's not your cup of coffee if you need a communicator, if you type more than 5 SMS a day, or if you like playing Java games.

Its starting price is estimated at 330 euros

Here’s a “special” Thankgiving double edition of tasty bits for this past month

Here's a "special" Thankgiving double edition of tasty bits for this past month...

1) Let's start with mod-friendly Asus 701 (Eee) coverage:
- Ars Technica review with some hacking tips
- Notebook Review tweak guide
- Forbes background story
- Uneasy Silence article on running OS X

I tried following this article and running OS X on my Eee but the installation keeps hanging along the way - to be further investigated.

2) The Nokia N82 was announced and released (!) recently (instead of announcing now and releasing 6 months later, for a change):
- Additional info
- Unboxing video
- Multi-part review

The N82 appears similar in features to the N95 albeit in a candybar form factor with a smaller (2.4") screen and a better (Xenon) flash. Sadly, there's no HSDPA support for North America.

3) The Nokia N95 is still getting plenty of attention:
- US version review
- Screen auto-rotation application
- Original vs. 8 GB pros and cons
- 8GB vs. Apple iPhone comparison

4) Apple released an iPhone update (1.1.2) and the community soon responded with another jailbreak. Here's more iPhone coverage:
- Send files directly from iPhone to another (1.1.1)
- Instant Jailbreak for iPhone and iPod touch (1.1.1)
- Stream Music from your iPhone to iTunes with Firefly (1.1.1)
- AFP for iPhone and iPod touch
- iRadio Brings Streaming Radio to iPhone
- iTunes 7.5 and iPhone 1.1.2 return custom ringtones
- T-Mobile to offer Germans unlocked iPhones

In this video, Steve Litchfield compares Apple’s iPhone with Nokia’s E61i and Sony Erics

In this video, Steve Litchfield compares Apple's iPhone with Nokia's E61i and Sony Ericsson's W950. His review of the iPhone is quite interesting. Other than the missing 3G support and limited camera hardware, I think the iPhone is only restricted in features by its current software implementation - there's a lot Apple can (and hopefully will) do to remedy this. I also think that the OS X core of the iPhone is superior to Symbian (and will soon challenge it).

Oh, and Kevin Tofel caved in and picked up an iPhone, and Robert Scoble is dropping the Nokia N95 for the iPhone - hehe :)

Speaking of touch-based devices, Neonode's sexy N2 got unboxed, and Meizu's M8 (miniOne) got specified. Is Samsung 's P520 the answer to LG's KE850 (Prada) phone?

Sony Ericsson's flagship P1i is out and about! Here's an unboxing and a review. Also, here's a review of Sony Ericsson's 5 megapixel K850i...

BTW, the iPhone hacking continues:
- Partial unlocking
- "Hello world"
- Apache, Python, etc...

And finally, here's a great Nokia E90 blog!

T-Mobile recently launched HotSpot@Home, a UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) service with seamless hand-off between GSM and WiFi - unfortunately it requires special phones and routers...

Nokia released new firmware for the N95 which includes support for AGPS (to enhance the existing integrated GPS). Also, here's an aftermarket high-capacity battery (and cover) for the N95!

Here's a couple of new 5 megapixel camera phones: the Samsung G600 and the LG KU990, a touch-based device with a 3" screen and HSDPA.

The Neonode N2 is almost ready for release, albeit without EDGE... The Meizu M8 (miniOne) is supposed to be launching in 2008 - $989 for the 16 GB version!

And now for the obligatory iPhone coverage:
- Another Apple iPhone vs. LG KE850 (Prada) comparison...
- Enter field test mode
- Setup custom ring tones
- Looking for music to stream? Here you go! (and BTW, this is not supported on the N95)

And finally, if you don't think the iPhone changes everything, think again:

They are bringing millions of newbies, and not kicking and screaming, into the smartphone age.

One interesting bit of news this past week was the release of the HTC Touch... This touch-based device improves upon the standard Windows Mobile interface with gesture recognition and a more attractive layout - it's no iPhone, but it reminds me of the Neonode N1m, and that's a good thing!

Robert Scoble is now a Nokia N95 convert - then again, who can resist such a converged and convenient device? Welcome to the club :)

Here is a review of the sexy Nokia N76, soon to be available from Nokia USA, along with the N75.

The Sony Ericsson P1i was approved by the FCC, and reviewed not once but twice, in addition to this video preview...

Say that like me, you are both a Nokia Symbian smartphone user and a Mac user. Are you looking for more than iSync integration? How about iTunes and iPhoto integration? Well, say 'hello" to the Nokia Media Transfer!

Finally, here is a detailed multi-part review of the OQO Model 02 - and speaking of handtops, the Raon Digital Everun looks very promising.

It's been almost a month since I unboxed my Neonode N1m, but then my Nokia N95 came along and stole the show :)

Nonetheless, I've been playing with my N1m on and off, and I'm very impressed! It's definitely a best kept secret device - Neonode's touch-based user interface with gesture recognition (also featured on the upcoming N2) is extremely intuitive...

The phone even offers tactile feedback through the vibration feature when using the touch screen! Hmmm, I wonder if the iPhone works like that... Are you paying attention, Apple?

Pros:
- Great touch-based user interface
- Fast operation
- Smartphone (Neno over Windows CE 5.0 .NET)
- Well made device
- Very small and light
- Good battery life
- Good music player (but no AAC support)
- Good HTML web browser
- Good GPRS performance
- Decent phone reception and audio quality
- USB mass storage device when powered off (with standard connector)
- USB charger

Cons:
- Dim, scratch-sensitive screen
- So-so camera (1 megapixel)
- No Bluetooth
- No email client by default (but here's one available for download)
- No speakerphone?
- No iSync support (but ActiveSync support)
- No Java support
- Tri-band GPRS only

Late last week I received my Neonode N1m... Expect my first impressions soon!

I've been busy at GDC with work-related stuff, but I'll have some Nokia and Motorola coverage for you later this week. Also, I've acquired a rare Neonode N1m that I'll be playing with soon. In the meantime...

How about some LG KE850 (Prada) phone goodness, like a review, a video review (above), and a release date & price?

The <strike>zombie handtop </strike>Vulcan FlipStart is <strike>back from the dead again </strike>here after a 3-year vaporware hiatus! It's a bit pricey, thick, heavy, (ugly?) and a bit challenged on the memory and hard drive fronts, but it's nonetheless interesting. I've requested a review unit, but I'm not holding my breath :)

Here's a video of the Samsung F700 with music by one of my favorite bands, Fila Brazillia (song: The Cubist News, album: Dicks, year: 2004).

Apparently, you can use the Nokia N95 to edit video! Wow...

It looks like Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR is going to introduce some cool new features, including near field communication.

Perhaps the Google phone is more than just speculation after all.

Well, it's been a quiet week... If you're interested in the Nokia E90, you're supposed to ask questions! Otherwise, enjoy a bit of humor :)

Update: How about a hands-on with the fascinating Neonode N2?

The Nokia E90 is here... And according to this review, it's the über phone! I'm very excited that it features a 3.2 megapixel camera with auto-focus and flash. Maybe I'll even wait for the E90 instead of getting the Nokia N95.

A OQO Model 02 with HSPDA instead of EVDO? Oh yeah! Unfortunately it's a only a tech demo, and it's not available yet...

As expected, the touch-based Neonode N2 is here, and it looks very interesting - perhaps I'll even order one if/when it's available :)

Now this is interesting!

Two years after releasing the N1m, a phone featuring a touch screen with gesture recognition, Neonode announced that it will be showing a new device at 3GSM...

Is this more iPhone competition, perhaps? Or will the Meizu M8 just be a replica?

I really mean it - 2007 will be the year of the touch-based device.
