The Dark Knight - *****

Starring: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Nestor Carbonell, Eric Roberts
Director: Christopher Nolan
Screenplay: Jonathan Nolan, Christopher Nolan and David Goyer.

So the hype train rolls into town, replete with enormous expectation and a final central performance from a young actor lost in his prime. It comes with the hopes of millions of Batman comic fans and those who have longed hoped to see the full vision of those graphic novels brought to full fruition. It comes with the broken dreams of some who were disappointed by Batman Begins and felt cheated that Darren Aronofsky and Frank Miller never saw their work reach the screen. It comes to these shores with a bandwagon of supporters from across the pond. It comes with ringing endorsements from fans of and haters of the first Nolan instalment and even comes with the true test of quality filmmaking, a negative review from The Daily Mail's Christopher Tookey. So after all is said and done, does Nolan's Dark Knight and Ledger's Joker deliver the goods? In short, damn straight.

I won't spend much time on the plot but essentially you have Batman being joined in his fight against crime by new DA Harvey Dent. The two then take on the crime families of Gotham but fail to realise the threat of a new criminal, The Joker. Meanwhile, Dent is dating and proposing to Rachel Dawes, the love of Batman/Bruce Wayne's life, creating a love triangle to parallel the wider crime story.

That is about as perfunctory a plot summary as I could give you but its important to go into this film not knowing much about what happens. If you alien or at least unfamiliar with the comics, you need to see this without reading much about the film, going along for the ride and being swept up in the epic saga it weaves. If you are a comic reader, the essence of those characters is very satisfyingly captured without being slaveringly holy about the source material. They seem to have struck balances between it being a film to please comic book kids and film fans alike.

Balances is a key element of Nolan's storytelling here. Much of the criticism of the movie, of which there has been reassuringly little, centres on its length. At 152 minutes, its certainly a chunky proposition for the average movie fan but while I would argue that it is slightly overlong, the length serves a specific purpose that makes it hard to criticise. Nolan seems intent to make sure that no character gets short shrift, giving great moments to all the key and peripheral characters in the story, including a couple of touching scenes with Michael Caine's Alfred which finally give his character the hardened yet soft depth we needed. Nolan makes sure that all the character are fully fleshed out and given their time to expand. If that makes the story overlong, its not a problem because he's simply trying to make sure no-one gets left on the sidelines, a problem with so many superhero and comic books movies that become overoccupied with exploring the central hero.

It helps Nolan in achieving a balance between characters that his cast are impeccable. Christian Bale almost ends up playing second fiddle for much of the movie to Ledger's Joker, Aaron Eckhart's Dent and Gary Oldman's Gordon. It becomes an ensemble superhero movie and buys its right to do this by making sure that everyone is as interesting, if not more so, than Batman.

Heath Ledger is taking up much of the acting praise for the film and his work here is pretty spectacular. He twitches and snarls and is plays the Joker much more physically than Jack Nicholson ever attempted. He makes the Joker into a tangible threat on his own, rather than simply a Kingpin of crime syndicate. There are moments where his psychotic nature just pours off the screen and his villainy is never overdone. His plans and schemes all make sense and his coldness towards humanity is portrayed through his brutal treatment of human life. He's a beautifully realised acting creation from Ledger.

Much of the reality that comes from his schemes is facilitated by Nolan and the script from Nolan's brother Jonathan and the story from David Goyer. The script takes its time to make the audience understand that many people, either within the DA or the Gotham police force, are on the payroll of criminals and therefore that plans which require a certain amount of cooperation to be pulled off by the Joker are easily doable. The script is pretty wonderful in itself. The Nolans and Goyers have created a whole new Gotham world, surely party based on the New York of the 1970s, and shoot the city in an entirely different way which recalls most pertinently Michael Mann's Heat. The latter was Los Angeles but its sweeping shots of imposing chrome and glass buildings are strongly recalled by the cinematography here (shooting Chicago incidentally) from long-time Nolan collaborator Wally Pfister. The script makes time for us to understand the system of Gotham, for us to be brought into this real world, a distance from the gothic wonderland of Burton and the cyberpunk crapness of Schumacher. It also deliberately provides an ending which is both bleak and hopeful, a fitting way to close out a Batman film in which the hero is never the clear cut good guy in the way Superman is. Batman, as is said in the film, makes the choices others will not and sometimes this involves him becoming outcast from society in ways he may not deserve but that he accepts as needed for the greater good. Ledger's Oscar nod is almost assured but a script nomination should also follow.

The film is even thematically quite different from Batman Begins in placing Batman within a real context but never losing sight that this is a comic-book movie. This is the other key balance the movie gets so right. Although a crime saga of epic proportions, the film doesn't forget to deliver fantastic action sequences and beautifully- judged moments of humour. For while this delivers a great crime story, it still has a legacy of character and films to live up to or to at least nod to. Of all the previous incarnations, the film most closely resembles the brilliant Animated Series from the early 1990s, most particularly through creating the emotional backdrop of the story and through Ledger's portrayal of The Joker, specifically the maniacal and chilling laugh the young man perfected.

Although Ledger deserves all the praise he's getting for his Joker, the rest of the cast is absolutely great. Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman bring both the requisite air of gravitas and grounding as well as little touches of knowing humour, making their characters far less one-note than many were for me in Batman Begins. Gary Oldman is wonderful in this one, moving on from the horrible Keystone cop idiocy of the aforementioned first and becoming the Gordon that's needed in the story - heroic and noble but unable to quite fulfil all the requirements of a hero, therefore needing Batman only to facilitate the final parts of his crimefighting. The best we get though are Maggie Gyllenhaal and Aaron Eckhart as Rachel and Harvey Dent respectively. Comic fans will know the partial denouement of Dent and for them I will say that the transformation is incredible, gory and brutal, completely eviscerating anything Tommy Lee Jones achieved. Eckhart plays Dent perfectly, a mixture of explosive anger and heroism, willing to do anything he can to make his city a better place, even placing himself in direct danger a number of times to try and achieve his goal. He also avoids any kind of mugging and the script avoids any horrible overdone references to who he will become in the future. He plays those moments with great subtlety and puts in a superlative performance which should push him further into the A-list. Gyllenhaal gets maybe even more praise for solving a key problem with Batman Begins, Katie Holmes. Holmes never had any kind of presence or playfulness that suggested Bruce Wayne could have any interest in her. Gyllenhaal provides a beautifully realised character portrait of a young woman helping to fight the corrupted system of Gotham while remaining sparky, attractive and human. Her acting alongside Bale and Dent shows why the choice between the two is so difficult avoiding painting the love story as any kind of easy choice for her or the audience. All the depth of the choices she has to make come through in her performance.

The other problem with Batman Begins was the action sequences. To put is bluntly, they simply weren't exciting enough. Problem solved. Not only are the action scenes in this film exciting, they are visually incredible. Through sticking with doing mostly live stunts and only using CGI to facilitate certain moments, the action scenes take on a certain authenticity and manage to make sure you don't lose what's going on as so many terrible CGI-action sequences (Transformers, Hancock) do. The moment hyped in the trailers, the lorry flipping, is far more exciting than you would imagine it would be having already seen it and there is so much more beyond that. Even the quick moments of smaller violence are done with panache and again, that sense of reality, which make them so much more effective than previous Batman incarnations.

Before all this praise becomes too much, there are minor issues to be found here. Eric Roberts as Morrone is woefully miscast. Although the lack of threat he provides works in further pushing the Joker's danger level, his accent is a little wobbly and he just provides too little interest. It's hard to see the largest crime family in Gotham handing the reins to him.

That's about it. There really aren't any problems that could even vaguely spoil your enjoyment of his film unless you have a prejudice against long movies or are a die-hard Schumacher fan. Finally we have a comic book film to stand alongside Superman as not just a great actioner, not just a great comic adaptation, but as a genuinely great film. My faith is restored. Long live the Bat.

P.S Minor note but for fans of The Tick, tell me you got a kick out of the Mayor being played by Batmanuel.

Synopsis

Christopher Nolan returns with The Dark Knight to follow what was left off from Batman Begins. Commencing with Gotham at it's most hopeful it's new villain, the evil incarnate: The Joker, begins to tear the city and all it's inhabitants apart. Suddenly with no rules and nearly everyone a suspect of wrong doing, Bruce and Batman face choices they never had to make before.

Review

The Dark Knight certainly lived up to it's hype with an action packed story, enigmatic and perplexing characters, and undertones that leave chills twisting down your spine. The brilliant script and direction of Christopher Nolan shines through with a film that balances action, crime, the very nature of good and evil while still maintaining it's comic book genre. It blows what other comic movies have tried to do out of the water, they aren't even in the same category. The internal struggles of the character's and desperation of the choices each makes is the catalyst for the story.

To put the entirety of The Dark Knight in a nutshell was the scene with the Joker in the hospital with Harvey Dent. The verbal exchange between the two, and the exploration of the fine line between good and evil, right from wrong, and who's good and who's bad really sums up the entire feel for the story. Also, a scene in the interrogation room between Batman and The Joker really draws the line that separates who and what they are by simultaneously blurring it again.

Harvey Dent's character actually seems to be the nucleus of the story, even though it's not really about him, our hero and foe pawn him about the board for their own personal goals, be they good or evil. His inevitable metamorphosis becomes clear early on, and eventually leaves the dynasty open for another sequel.

The dangerous mix of real life terrorism and the fine line between who's good and bad, and the basic wonder of interpretation in situations and basic perception was a much more in depth plot than one would surmise to get from a movie titled: Batman, but it's there, vibrant and alive. I saw it 24 hours ago and everything about it is still lingering in a very realistic way with me. Plain and simple, this movie blows away anything that has been made in 2008 thus far.

Cast

Heath Ledger as The Joker

Not to diminish anyone elses performances, Ledger's was just that phenomenal. Christian Bale again proves that a popcorn action hero can have more complexity and interest than a tough guy kicking butt. the internal struggles that Bruce Wayne vs. Batman have with one another between one another becomes a delectable trial of pain, sorrow, and regret. The supporting actors played by Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Michael Caine, and especially the ever talented Aaron Eckhart bring even more legitimacy to the story taking each of their roles to the mattresses.

Ratings And Suggestions

If you are a Batman junkie, this movie is for you. If you are an action hero or superhero junkie this movie is for you. If you are a chick flick junkie this movie is for you. It doesn't matter who you are, this movie is for you. Don't bother to wait for it to hit DVD's, go to your theatre this second, stand in line for an hour, buy a ticket and prepare to be blown away. Three years seemed a long wait after Batman Begins, but now I can't seem to muster the patience to wait five months till I can own it on DVD. Best movie this year. Heath Ledger's performance as the harbinger of death and chaos is alone worth every penny and every second devoted to this film. Four out of Four Serious Stars.

Roteiro: Jonathan Nolan, Christopher Nolan

Elenco: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Cillian Murphy, Eric Roberts, Nestor Carbonell

If I can momentarily direct your attention to the top of the blog ... New banner! Yup, another one. And plenty more where that came from!

I FINALLY got the Domino's Dark Knight Vault to work for me, w00t! So ... (semi-crappy) screen shots, hooray! Screen shots all around!

I really liked this trailer---and not just because it was extended and thus had even more TDK goodness packed into it. Each trailer has had a somewhat different feel, as have some of the tv spots (yeah, I know). This trailer has a more somber touch to it, I think, as it delves more into Batman's psychology and his relationship with the Joker. The last trailer had a very anarchic feel about it and was just BAM! On another note, I think the music flows really well in this one (the soundtrack is going to kick major ass).

There's a new interview with Gary Oldman over at Batman-On-Film. I love that man, he's awesome. In the interview he says that he's willing to do a third one and he's pretty sure there will indeed be one. Yes! Not only am I excited for this movie, but I'm excited to see how it ends---how it's left open for the third (and final) Nolan-Batman film.

Oldman also says something really sweet about Heath.

... But you know, in between takes, he'd sit on the curb, smoke a cigarette, laugh, and talk about his daughter. I just thought he was a beautiful, beautiful kid. I had the real affection for him. Charismatic -- you need a whole new word for Heath.

I received an email from MovieTickets.com today with some more exciting Dark Knight data.

"Dark Knight" Hits 100

MovieTickets.com is reporting that, 16 days prior to its release, over 100 "Dark Knight" performances are already sold out for opening weekend.

Next Up: "Dark Knight"

According to MovieTickets.com, 1 in 4 Under-25 moviegoers polled June 24-29 tab "Dark Knight" as the next movie they expect to see in theaters.

"Knight" Falls on IMAX

Interestingly, almost half of total tickets sold for "Dark Knight" are for IMAX performances, according to MovieTickets.com.

Batman-On-Film has yet another TDK giveaway in which you can win some awesome swag! I don't feel like posting the answers or anything at the moment, so you can just get your own lazy butt over to the site to check out the details. ;) The entry questions aren't hard, either---just hop over to IMDB.com if you don't know the answers.

IESB.net also has a very similar contest, and they both end July 21. So go check it out!

And speaking of IESB.net, the site has a bunch of video interviews with director Christopher Nolan and stars of The Dark Knight like Christian Bale, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Morgan Freeman, Nestor Carbonell (who portrays the Mayor of Gotham in the movie), and Anthony Michael Hall (who plays Gotham Cable News reporter Mike Engel). Watch at your own risk, of course.

There's an article by Variety that discusses the balance of the movie. Not really anything new, though. And there's an interesting blog post over here about the possibility of Robin in the third Nolan film that I kind of agree with. I've said in a prior post or two that I'd like to see Nolan play around with the idea of bringing in Robin or Batgirl, or at least doing something that would build up to Batman having either one as a partner.

Also, /Film has an article called "10 Reasons Why I Loved The Dark Knight." Really? Only ten? The article is completely spoiler-free, my friends, but it gets you even more psyched up for this film. Like this part:

You will believe that a hero becomes the villain. And you might also be shocked at how long the two-face character appears on screen. It's not just a tease - you will get everything! His computer generated make-up is so gruesome and realistic looking, that I'm shocked the film was able to get a PG-13 rating.

Awesome! The article also mentions the sequences shot with Imax cameras, saying they work brilliantly in this movie. And now I REALLY want to see it in Imax. I won't be the first time I go (aww), but hopefully a second time I will. What can I say? It's not like there's one just down the road. Yeesh, give me a break. ;D

And hey, you know how I said I was wondering about how the ending would leave things open for the next film? Things are lookin' good.

There is more than one casualty, and it doesn't exactly end on a high note. Fans will eat the ending up. After sitting in the theater for two and a half hours, it will leave you wanting more.

CNN.com has a good article on Ledger's performance---which many are saying may not only get him a posthumous Oscar nomination, but as Oldman put it with perfect, blatant simplicity, "he may even win the damn thing."

As we've come closer to the release date, a lot of reviews for The Dark Knight have been popping up. I've been trying to stay away from them, but glimpses of them around the internet all tell me they agree on at least two things: The Dark Knight is mind-blowing and so is Heath Ledger.

"He was better than I thought he was going to be," said Bill Ramey, founder of the fan Web site Batman-on-Film.com, who caught an advance press screening. "I think he legitimately would deserve an Oscar nomination, not just out of sympathy to his passing, but because he was just fantastic in the movie. ... It's right up there with Hannibal Lecter," which earned Anthony Hopkins an Oscar for "The Silence of the Lambs."

Some---like Gary Oldman---are hopeful that he will nail the Oscar win; others are facing a harsher reality despite their own feelings of praise:

"The fact that only one actor has ever won an Oscar from the grave tells us that in general at the Oscars, the feeling is when you're dead, you're dead," said Tom O'Neil, a columnist for TheEnvelope.com, an awards Web site. "Maybe the point is that the Oscars are all about hugs. Nobody wants to hug a dead guy."

I guess we'll just have to find out (and see) for ourselves when the time comes.

• Episódio: There's no Place Like Home, partes 2 & 3
• Temporada: 4
• Canal: FOX

Porra! Se de pensar nisso…

"Come out, come out, little Crane ..."

IESB.net has twelve---yeah, I said twelve---exclusive clips from The Dark Knight! And none of the ten-second "clip" shit. Man, these are juicy, wholesome clips ... that are also pretty highly spoilerish. Granted TDK's run-time is clocking in at over two and a half hours---but still, you've been warned, so watch at your own risk.

Thanks, John, for the tip!

For some reason to get the clips to load and play for me I had to either press the full back or full forward buttons, or whatever they're called ( |< or >| on the player).

Anyway, those clips definitely helped calm the extreme Dark Knight craving that I've been experiencing for a long time now ... although I'm still foaming at the mouth over this movie.

Also, scroll down on that main page to see a bunch of pics from the movie, like those in this post! :D Or check out the same gallery here along with an awesome interview. (IESB.net is so blogrolled.)

The Joker gives Batman a Bat-ultimatum.

And check THIS out. Eight minutes of actual behind-the-scenes footage---as in them actually filming. Damn cool. Here's a rundown:

In Part One you get to see Christian Bale (Bruce Wayne/Batman) and Michael Caine (Alfred Pennyworth) acting, Christopher Nolan directing, and the Tumbler/Batmobile up-close and in-action.

In Part Two ... I swear that was just the Tumbler going in the water (and if it was, if you factor in the search helicopters then it might just have something to do with the arrest warrant for Batman). Plus, more action sequences, Nolan talking with Bale and Morgan Freeman (Lucius Fox), a funny scene/blooper with Freeman, a scene between Jim Gordon (actor Gary Oldman) and Police Commissioner Loeb (Colin McFarlane), a clip of Nolan and Aaron Eckhart (Harvey Dent) watching a camera guy film some kind of parade with bagpipes (wtf?), footage of what I'm assuming is Bruce driving his expensive car, the taxi scene with Harvey Dent and Rachel Dawes (actress Maggie Gyllenhaal), and more explosions.

This new international trailer for the film combines the greatness of the last trailer and all the cool moments from the recent tv spots. Check it out!

You know, watching this stuff really makes how close we are to July 18 sink in. Squee!

O Ben (Michael Emerson), o Locke (Terry O'Quinn) e o Hurley (Jorge Garcia), que pretendem deslocar a ilha a mando do Jacob.

Uh, wow. Just wow. Just when you think that Season 4 can’t possibly get any better, an epi

Uh, wow. Just wow. Just when you think that Season 4 can't possibly get any better, an episode like Cabin Fever comes along and takes things to a whole new level. Really, this season has simply been one home run after the other, and the show just hit a grand slam with this episode. In all honesty, I'm still trying to dissect some of what we saw on-screen, so I'm not sure this recap will make complete sense, or be able to explain every scene. But here we go with my best guesses:

"Cabin Fever"

When I first saw this title, I thought more about Captain Gault and his reference to the "sickness" that the freighter folk were coming down with. Kind of strange, because I think the main intention all along was more in line with re-discovering Jacob's Cabin. But there's even a third possibility: Locke's mindset. Throughout this episode, we're treated to situations in which Locke is "boxed in": as a baby when he's born prematurely and placed in an incubator, in high school as he's stuffed in a locker, and after his paralysis when he's wheelchaired into an elevator. Of course, we already know that he used to work for a box company before he came to the island. We're definitely being told a story of a man who is repeatedly confined to a specific space, but then breaks out and expands his horizons. Could this overarching theme be related to the "real-time" events of this episode as well? Is Locke now about to break out of another form of confinement he's been experiencing on the island into another level of consciousness? I'm sure we'll get an idea of that beginning with next week's episode.

"He's twice your age, Emily."

OK, call me a conspiracy theorist, but this line, and the scene surrounding it, leaves me with some doubt as to whether or not the late Anthony Cooper (Sawyer's namesake) is really Locke's dad. Yeah, it's a reach, but follow the logic with me for a minute. We can reasonably assume that Emily is in her mid to late teens in this episode, putting her lover in or near his 30's. Couple that with the song on the record player, and what we already know about Locke...that he was born in the late 50's...and we've got Anthony Cooper coming in at nearly 80 years old when he came to the island to meet with Sawyer and his chains last season. Something just doesn't add up there. It could be that I have the math wrong, it could be something the writers overlooked, or it could be that there is more to the story of Locke's father. Let me put it this way...I wouldn't be surprised at all if a) Cooper's claim to be Locke's dad was his original con with Locke (he did need a kidney, right?), or b) that Cooper travelled through both space and time to get to the island last season. Just a little something to think about.

Sayid is no one's bitch

Just a quick aside here that could easily be lost with everything else that happened in this episode. Despite giving up a few inches of height to Keamy, and a whole lot of firepower, Sayid has no intention of giving up his friends on the island. Awesome to see someone stand up to Keamy, even if it was only for a fleeting moment.

The island still has plans for Michael

Although we already knew that it wasn't yet Michael's time to die, it was still a powerful scene to see him stare down the barrel of Keamy's gun with eyes wide open. At this point, it's hard not to feel sorry for the character, depsite his actions in Season 2. It would certainly be nice to see him get a chance at redemption before the island decides that his time is up.

"I used to have dreams."

It's absolutely amazing how thoroughly downtrodden Ben is in this episode. This guy is the man with the plan (and a backup plan) for every situation, but in this episode, he is thoroughly lost. From the opening scene (just look at his face), to his inability to figure out where Jacob's cabin is, to his awesome one-liner, "Destiny is a fickle bitch", to his reluctance to even approach Jacob's cabin after they find it...Ben has simply lost the will to try. As the episode progressed, especially after Ben's line to Locke about tricking Hurley, I kept expecting to see something that would lead me to believe that Ben was somehow still in control...that he was manipulating from behind the scenes...that he was one quick move away from taking over...but nothing. We've seen the flashforwards, so we know he regains his mojo at some point. But right now, it's gone.

Hello again, Mr. Alpert

I love the character of Richard Alpert. I'm so glad that Cane got cancelled so that Nestor Carbonell could reprise his role. And again, his appearance raises all kinds of questions. First, what's up with this guy's age? Seriously, does he ever get old? OK, I've got 2 theories about this: one of which I thought of back in "The Man Behind The Curtain", and a new one I just thought of after this episode. So, the seemingly most obvious answer to Richard's appearances, all at about the same age, is that he simply doesn't age at all. The island showed him the fountain of youth, and now he can go on for years and years at the same age. Sounds simple, right? Well, I don't subscribe to that theory any longer. Now I believe in this one: Richard is a time traveller. He seems the same age everywhere (or everywhen) he goes, because he's only in places for short periods of time before he time travels somewhere else...past, future, whatever. I'm not sure how yet, but that's my new theory.

But before we leave the topic of Mr. Alpert, why don't we ask another question: How the heck did he know where John Locke was as a baby? There are a couple of answers, only 2 of which really make sense to me. One, is that he knew Locke's real father somehow. He knew of Locke's birth, and Emily's impending decision, and went to the hospital to try to get a leg up on tracking him down later. Not buying that one? Me neither, really. What I really think, is that Mr. Alpert is actually from the future. He's doing all of these travels back in time to steer the course of actual events that have already occured, from his perspective. How does he know about Locke's birth? Well, from Locke himself, in the future! How's that for a thought? More on that in a bit.

John Locke, the next Dalai Lama?

As if it's not enough that Richard is stalking Locke throughout his life, but now he wants to run the reincarnation test on him. Of course, John fails miserably, stopping him from coming to the island at a much earlier age than he did. Or does he? Part of me thinks that the reason Richard is so thoroughly upset with young Locke is not that he's "not ready" (he must know that he will be at some point, right?), but that he IS ready. He grabbed the knife, and that knife is Mr. Locke through and through. Maybe, instead, Mr. Alpert is himself not ready for Locke to be ready. Maybe Mr. Alpert is the leader of the Others at that point in time, and like Ben last season, is simply not yet ready to give up the reins. Can't imagine any other reason why Richard would show that much disdain for a child. I certainly am having a hard time believing that it's only due to him not yet being "ready".

"You need to go on a walkabout"

First, a couple of visits from Richard Alpert, then a visit from Matthew Abbadon, who just so happens to recommend a trip to Australia. So, if Charles Widmore hired Abbadon, and Abbadon inspired Locke to go on his walkabout, then Widmore must believe that Locke will help him usurp Ben's power on the island at some point, right? Honestly, I'm not sure, but what intrigues me even more is the idea of Locke's destiny. All of John's "chance" meetings in this episode lead to the idea that there was actually no chance in it at all. Yeah, Locke was "chosen" alright, but not in the random, happenstance way in which that phrase is generally used. John was hand-picked early in life, and was guided to do the things he was "meant" to do. Everything has been carefully orchestrated to give John the impression that he was acting on his own free will, when he was in fact, doing what others suggested or pushed him to do. It makes the whole idea of "fate vs. free will" come into play even more. Michael's inability to die until he meets his destiny is nothing compared to the life-long manipulation that Locke has had to endure.

The doc goes overboard, but...

...he doesn't have stitches. He does have an interesting scar in the same place, but definitely no stitches. How in the heck is this possible? Does his body move back in time temporally as it travels backwards in time to the island? Honestly, I have no real grasp of what's happening here, other than the fact that it seems as though the way in which time moves for you as you approach or leave the island is nearly completely random, and is (as we know) determined solely by the vector you take when you travel.

Claire has turned into one spooky character

It certainly seems as though the rumor about her being dead is true, but more than that, she is one darn spooky girl now. That look and tone in Jacob's cabin was chilling. Odd that Christian didn't want Locke to tell anyone about her either. The strangness in the cabin continues...

Ben and Hurley share some chocolate

No amazing insights here, I just wanted to take a minute to nod in appreciation of this moment. It killed a few seconds of time, but it was absolutely hilarious! Awesome scene!

"He wants us to move the island."

What a setup we have for the 3-part finale! Just a quick note, and maybe it's obvious to everyone at this point: I think they're not only supposed to move the island through space, but through time as well.

POST-EPISODE QUESTIONS

What the heck is Christian Shepard's role in all of this?

He's dead, yet he's showing up everywhere on the island, off thr island, in Jacob's cabin, and is speaking on behalf of the big man himself. How the heck did he get into that position?

Is there a difference between fate and free will on this island?

How much of your life is yours if you're being guided by something else? Charlie, Michael, and now Locke all appear to have their fate already decided for them. The Oceanic 6 also appear headed back to the island after they escaped it, whether they want to or not. Can any of the survivors break the cycle?

Where (and to when) are they going to move the island?

I have no clue obviously, but it's fun to think about. Somewhere really, really cold perhaps?

I hope you enjoyed this episode as much as I did!

Le scene in questione sono state girate alla Waimano Home, dove è stato ricreato un ospedale, in particolare un reparto di maternità;

Le scene sembrerebbero essere ambientate negli anni 50, sia per via dei vestiti indossati dal personale ospedaliero sia per l'abbigliamento degli uomini e delle donne presenti sul set;

Ryan ha confermato che nella scena compare una ragazza di circa 20 anni, il cui nome è Emily, ed un bambino;

Nestor Carbonell (Richard Alpert) è stato visto presso il set, vestito elegantemente, e anche se non è stato confermato, la sua presenza sul set potrebbe non essere solo una visita di cortesia;

In quest'episodio dovrebbe lavorare pure Terry O'Quinn (John Locke).

Then as a close-up shot focuses onto his face, my next thought was "...wait... is that... eyeliner?" It was one of those moments where you see the silhouettes of others in the theater turning to each other to make a comment to the person next to them, and you know what they're saying. "Is he... wait... is that?..."

Now, it could be that Nestor Carbonell, the actor who played the Mayor, just has some VERY thick lower eyelashes, possibly due to his heritage (I believe hispanic), but I've never met anyone whose heritage affected their lower eyelashes so much that it would give off the appearance of thick mascara. It totally threw off every scene he was in.

Lots of Batman news, whoo!

Along with some information about the Gotham Knight panel at Wizard World Chicago on June 28 (next Saturday) there's a few new pictures from the movie, which comes out straight to dvd and blu-ray on July 8, over at Batman-On-Film.

First off regarding The Dark Knight, here's an interview with Nestor Carbonell, who plays the mayor of Gotham in the movie. Yeah, that seemingly immortal guy from Lost? That's him. Anyway, it's a cool read and you get to see repeated typos (it's Dark Knight, not Night---as in reference to the chivalrous guys in armor, not the period of time after the sun sets). And who isn't a fan of Batman (or Gary Oldman)?

LatinoReview: When the movie started filming it was based around the Joker, which is Heath Ledger's character. Did you have any scenes with him at all?
Carbonell: I am in a couple of scenes with Heath but I really didn't have much interaction with him in the film. There was one particular moment that comes to mind that I did take note. I announce to a group of police officers and there is a big cheer in the room. Heath Ledger is behind bars, and it's in the trailer actually, and it wasn't scripted. He improvised this where he started clapping along in a very mocking sardonic way. Immediately I knew 'Whoa, this guy's got this role right in his veins. He knows this guy really well.' That was one observation I had, but I didn't have much interaction with him. I wish I would have had more. From what I understand the work he does in this film is just outstanding and unbelievable. I haven't had a chance to see it but others have seen it. They said it was incredible.

Aweeesommeee! I wish I could have been there to see that, man.

Part Five of BOF's TDK Set Visit is up! It features interviews with costumer Lindy Hemming, production designer Nathan Crowly, and producers Emma Thomas and Charles Roven. Hemming talks about Heath Ledger's outfit as his character, the Joker. Crowly discusses the Batpod (kick ass!)--and, as expected from the comics, his gadgets sound freaking awesome.

There's only a little section with Chris Corbould:

Chris Corbould is the special effect supervisor for THE DARK KNIGHT. We had the chance to chat briefly with him during the TDK set visit.

Chris explained a lot of the details behind the Batpod and gave high praise to its stunt driver, Jean-Pierre Goy.

Mr. Corbould also discussed the fact that CGI is used only when absolutely necessary in TDK (as well as in BATMAN BEGINS).

This is going to be good. But yeah, and I know Nolan wanted to film through any weather (like hard rain or wind) to make it more realistic---which is also going to be very cool.

And finally, Thomas and Roven talk about the film itself.

In other news, there's been some neat viral stuff going on ... Like this. Have fun!

Yeah, I suck and can't beat it, hehe, but it leads here evidently, where if you watch for the 03:02:13:22 mark you'll see this ...

Which goes back to the first released Joker photo from the movie.

Ohhh viral? (That's probably not new, but I haven't seen it before.)

Another cool tv spot for The Dark Knight, yay!
