The first week of my very first media job, a friend sent me a short list called ‘The 6 Stages

The first week of my very first media job, a friend sent me a short list called 'The 6 Stages of a Project'. It said that every project goes like this...

Enthusiasm

Disillusionment

Panic

Search for the Guilty

Punishment of the Innocent

Praise and Enthusiasm for the Uninvolved

It seemed funny at the time, yet over the years, the list seems almost too true - especially when a business initiative or 'project' doesn't go smoothly or when it hits unexpected setbacks.

And, it's been on my mind lately as unsettled financial markets have generated nervousness in media and digital businesses.

Broadcast media are worried that they may not transition effectively to digital media. And, digital media are worried about how to make their business models work or about a possible slowdown in the extraordinary growth of internet advertising.

Both broadcast and digital media know that they can't grow without the success of new initiatives or 'projects' within their businesses. And, they are nervous because new initiatives or 'projects' carry risk and cost.

Already, some are slipping from Enthusiasm to Disillusionment or even outright Panic. When they do, they take their eye off the ball. They derail important projects because of bad budgeting, wrong focus or a misreading of what's really happening in their space.

There are so many examples in radio, newspapers, at Microsoft and Yahoo, and in many 'me-too' online businesses.

This seems to be a critical time to keep focused on Enthusiasm with your initiatives or 'projects'. To look forward. To give employees a sense of purpose that they are building a better customer experience. And, to walk the talk.

When I think of companies who turned Enthusiasm about their 'projects' into big successes, I think of Pixar, NewsCorp, Google, Harpo, and Amazon among others. We can learn a lot from them.

To get through this choppy financial period and emerge a winner will require a lot of focus on Enthusiasm.

Some question why Ron Paul is so dedicated to the GOP?
Some question why Ron Paul refused to run as an independent even after literally tens of thousands of his constituents pleaded with him too?
Some question why Ron Paul was the ONLY congressman absent and only non-voter on the day that the most dangerous, most unconstitutional and most important bill ever entered into congress passed- H.R. 1955?
Some question why Ron Paul blatantly refused to cosponsor Dennis Kucinich's Impeachment Bill?
Some question why Ron Paul has not drafted his own Impeachment Bill for Dick Cheney?
Some question why Ron Paul has not drafted his own impeachment Bill for George W. Bush?
Some question why Ron Paul isn't active on a weekly if not daily basis pushing for a new and independent 9/11 investigation?
Some question why Ron Paul never, or at least rarely speaks of 9/11 or a 9/11 investigation especially during his campaign?
Some question why Ron Paul has stated specifically in at least 17 recorded interviews that he "does not believe that the U.S. had ANYTHING to do with and played NO part in 9/11."
Some people question why Ron Paul did none of these things when he had serious publicity and momentum.
Some people question why Ron Paul didn't do these things when he had 30+ million dollars during his campaign?
And then there are some people who question nothing...

McCain has alzheimer's

Below is what I think about this gentleman's phone call and the current Paul situation. Obviously if you are not concerned with impeachment hearings for Dick Cheney or George Bush or the events of 9/11 and the official story than this video means nothing.
If you have at least a minute concern for the above, then you should be asking these questions as well. In fact I believe that anyone with concerns should at least make a phone call and a video.
Please feel free to comment and have your own opinions, but please use your head and don't insult this gentleman for voicing his concerns and trying to get at least a decent response form a congressman, a civil servant, an official elected to represent the citizens. Thanks.
Ron Paul has refused to acknowledge key 9/11 evidence or call for an independent investigation and refuses to sponsor, cosponsor or support in ANY way any form of impeachment hearings even for Dick Cheney... This alone says much about a man...

'Criminal' Botnet Stumps for Ron Paul, Researchers Allege

By Sarah Lai Stirland

 10.31.07 | 12:00 AM

If Texas congressman Ron Paul is elected president in 2008, he may be the first leader of the free world put into power with the help of a global network of hacked PCs spewing spam, according to computer-security researchers who've analyzed a recent flurry of e-mail supporting the long-shot Republican candidate.

"This is clearly a criminal act in support of a campaign, which has been committed with or without their knowledge," says Gary Warner, the University of Alabama at Birmingham's director of research in computer forensics. "The question is, will we see more and more of this, or will this bring shame to the campaigns and will they make clear that this is not a form of acceptable behavior by their supporters?" Warner pointed to provisions of the federal Can-Spam Act.

Ron Paul spokesman Jesse Benton says the campaign has no knowledge of the scam. Warner himself says that he has no reason to believe that the Paul campaign had anything to do with these messages.

Some participants in the online political world have long suspected Paul's technically sophisticated fan base of manipulating online tools and polls to boost the appearance of a wide base of support. But the UAB analysis is the first to document any internet shenanigans.

The finding is significant, because Paul's online support -- as gauged by blog mentions, friends on social-networking sites such as MySpace and popularity in online polls -- has garnered him wide mainstream print and television coverage, despite his relatively poor performance in offline polling.

The spamming allegations are based on a slew of e-mails captured by contributors to the university's Spam Data Mining for Law Enforcement Applications project, a research venture that receives 2.5 million spam messages a day, and selects about 100,000 a week for analysis. The project receives its spam from other researchers with ties to ISPs, and in some cases from "trap" addresses that have never been used for any other purpose.

They were received by the lab following the latest televised Republican debate Sunday afternoon, and had 16 different subject lines, including "Ron Paul Wins GOP Debate! HMzjoqO" and "Ron Paul Exposes Federal Reserve! SBHBcSO." The random string of characters at the end is a common spammer's technique to circumvent bulk e-mail filtering.

The spam went to "several hundred" e-mail addresses harvested for the university project, says Warner.

The e-mails had phony names attached to real-looking e-mail addresses. When lab researchers examined the IP addresses of the computers from which the messages had been sent, it turned out that they were sprinkled around the globe in countries as far away from each other as South Korea, Japan, the United Kingdom, Nigeria and Brazil.

"The interesting thing was that we had the same subject line from the same IP address, and it claimed to be from different users from within the United States," Warner says.

One e-mail was designed to look as if it came from within a major Silicon Valley corporation, he notes. But when the researchers looked up the IP address, the computer from which the note was sent was actually in South Korea. Another e-mail that was designed to look as if it came from Houston was sent from Italy.

That pattern led Warner to conclude that the messages had been laundered through a botnet -- also a standard spammer practice, though a decidedly illegal one.

The body of a message examined by Wired News covered familiar Paul campaign themes, such as ending the war and eliminating the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Reserve. It also read:

Ron Paul is for the people, unless you want your children to have human implant RFID chips, a National ID card and create a North American Union and see an economic collapse far worse than the great depression. Vote for Ron Paul he speaks the truth and the media and government is afraid of him.

Last week, the prominent conservative blog Redstate banned new Paul supporters from posting on its site because of their "shilling" for the candidate in conversations that had nothing to do with politics. Other sites have disabled their online polls, because they suspected that they were being gamed by Ron Paul supporters.

Notwithstanding such charges, Paul's third-quarter haul of $5 million in campaign contributions seems to show that he does have a larger base of support than offline polls indicate.

Dan Hubbard of security company Websense reviewed one of the messages captured by the university. He believes that there was some type of spam-laundering in use -- though not necessarily a botnet.

"I have not seen a malicious-code sample yet that is sending these mails, therefore I would say it's likely that either they are using a botnet, or they are using open relays," he says, referring to unsecured e-mail servers that will accept anonymous e-mail and forward it back out to the internet.

Paul spokesman Jesse Benton said in an e-mail, "This is the first I've heard about this situation."

"If it is true, it could be done by a well-intentioned yet misguided supporter or someone with bad intentions trying to embarrass the campaign," he wrote while ferrying his boss to tape an appearance on The Tonight Show. "Either way, this is independent work, and we have no connection."

This article has been modified to clarify that Warner has seen no evidence suggesting that the Paul campaign is responsible for the spam.

as parts of the massive Russian 58th Army enter South Ossetia after its capital was captured by Georgia early Friday, Aug. 8.
Dear ACLU
Supporter,

Planning a vacation?
Thinking about traveling outside the country?

If you travel outside
the United States, you can kiss your right to privacy, and perhaps your laptop,
digital camera and cell phone, goodbye.

With no suspicion and
no explanation, the U.S. government can seize your laptop, cell phone, or PDA as
you enter the United States and download all your private information --
including your personal and business documents, emails, phone calls, and web
history. The Department of Homeland Security confirms
that this is the official policy.

Tell Congress: it’s time to rein in travel abuses by the
Department of Homeland Security.

What happens if you
refuse to let the agents download your personal photos? Or if you have encrypted
your private information? Then Border Patrol -- which is now an agency of the
Department of Homeland Security -- can simply copy your entire hard drive or
even take your device and hang on to it indefinitely.

Unfortunately, seizing
laptops and cameras at the border isn’t the only travel security measure that
infringes on our civil liberties.

Just last month, the
U.S. government's "terrorist watch list" surpassed one million names and is
growing by over twenty-thousand names per month. The watch list includes the
names of prominent people, like Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA), plus hundreds of
thousands of ordinary Americans -- many of them with common names like Robert
Johnson and James Robinson. Your name might be on the list, but
there's no way to know for sure until you are delayed -- or even detained for
hours in a back room. If you discover your name is on the list, it's nearly
impossible to get off. It actually took an Act of Congress to get Nelson Mandela
off the list. No joke. An Act of Congress.

These abuses have
something in common: They make all of us into suspects, with no rule of law and
no accountability.

Tell Congress: it’s time to rein in travel abuses by the
Department of Homeland Security.

It’s hard to know what
surveillance-state bureaucrats will come up with next. For instance, many
airports are using scanners that are so invasive that they are like a virtual
strip search! See-through body scanning machines are capable of showing an image
of a passenger's naked body. Security measures like this are extremely intrusive
-- and should only be used when there is good cause to suspect that an
individual is a security risk.

And recently, the TSA
expressed interest in having every traveler wear an "electro-muscular
disruption" bracelet that airline personnel or marshals could use to shock
passengers into submission. Unless something is done, this plan may not be as
far-fetched as one would think.

Tell Congress: it’s time to rein in travel abuses by the
Department of Homeland Security.

Traveling shouldn’t
mean checking your rights when you’re checking your luggage. It’s time for some

US general’s surprise Lebanon visit ties Israel’s hands against Hizballah

The US Iraq commander Gen. David Petraeus, soon to be promoted to Central Command chief, arrived unannounced in Lebanon on Wed. Aug 6. military sources report he came to check out the strategic ramifications of Hizballah’s seizure on behalf of Syria and Iran of two strategic Lebanese peaks, Mt. Sannine and Mt. Barukh. Petraeus also sought the exact import of the Lebanese government’s policy decision of Aug. 4, to let Hizballah stay armed (in violation of UN Security Council resolutions) and continue its war against Israel.

Those sources stress that American intervention in Lebanon closes the door once again on the prospect of Israeli action against this new threat.

The truth is, that before yesterday, I didn't think to high Clayton. I knew that he was one of the more tech-savvy persons on Fox and Friends, But I always had thought that he was a Windows guy.

Then he started talking about his iPhone. I thought I was hearing someone else talk, then I really studied the TV screen and realized that it was him, But I didn't immedently assume he had a website or anything like that, I had convinced myself that he just had an iPhone and didn't know what Apple is.

Then it really hit me yesterday when he brought up Twitter & He had his iPhone 3G. I had my iPod touch when I was watching the show, in my house. So I got on Twinkle, but I couldn't find a search thing, So I went on the mobile Twitter website, and still nothing. So I went to the desktop website, and I coulden't figure out how to spell his last name. Then for some reason it refreshed into the mobile page...

I was still watching Fox and Freinds hoping he would clarify what to look for, then my dream came true. Someone sent an email at which he read and clarified what Twitter is {for the senors}, and how to find him. That is a very good thing because I found him and now I am receiving his status updates, and FOX News <News> Updates on my iPod and on my MacBook {Pro}.

I soon found Clayton and started following him and sent him some comment about me not being about to buy a $400 Phone, even though I have at&t and the price is $200.

I was viewing everything that he had posted on his page, and I then found his website link. I didn't click on it though. I serached his name, and sure enough it was there, no caps or anything "clayton morris.com".

I clicked on it, and watched this rather odd video about him and this 4 week Wii fit challenge thing.

The next day {today} I was watching FOX and Friends [I was wondering if he had anything that I could reply to]. And he did.

They were talking about some kind of thing with the 6 Degrees away from someone, a study by Microsoft, {It might be flawed} but surprisingly Microsoft got it right. I don't see why they need to be studding this stuff, probably figuring out how to screw more people over...

Back to my point, I said hey "I'm only 2 Degrees away from You", and he said it on the show. He also question if that "counted", and the truth is, this whole wouldn't work unless that did "count". That's my beleif, but it's the truth. I mean have you seen some of the forwarded messages that people send you, not to many of those real life experiences, now are there.

But now, my view on Clayton has changed. I know look up to him, rather than giving him a strange look. Or should I say, giving the TV a strange look.

P.S. - Being the law breaker I am, I took a video of the FOX thing and put it on YouTube, so once it hits 100,000 views it will come down. Don't worry. So, yea.

Rubble of Indian embassy attacked in Kabul

Pakistan’s intelligence agency Sunday, July 27, accused the Indian Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and Israel’s Mossad of working hand in glove. They were blamed for stirring up trouble on the common border with Afghanistan and planning terrorist activities inside Pakistan in conjunction with Khad (the former Afghan secret service).

intelligence sources report that Islamabad, beset by accusations from New Delhi and Kabul of fomenting terror in their countries, injected the Israeli agency into the quarrel as an expedient for deflecting their attacks.

A dahlia in my garden.

1. Brett Favre. This guy came on TV and tearfully announced his retirement. He wanted the public to see this press conference. He coulda retired by sending a letter. This was after several years of will-he-or-won't-he. I see this as just another celebrity who is addicted to the limelight. Brett, old son, I watched you weep, don't be a creep. I'm over this guy. I think the notion of estoppel should apply. Bye.

2. The New Yorker. What an idiotic cover cartoon. Whether it is satiric or not, all it is going to do is fan the flames of distrust and racism. It may as well be an editorial endorsing McCain. I guess Rupert Murdoch and Newscorp must have secretly purchased New Yorker. Oh, by the way, their articles are terminally boring and I have no intention of reading the accompanying article about Mr. Obama.

3. Went to Plymouth yesterday. A: The "Rock" is barely visible due to construction on the structure around it. B: The "Rock" ain't worth looking at anyway. My Honey calls it "the Pebble." C: The "Mayflower II" is reasonably cool to look at, but nobody knows what the original Mayflower looked like, so it is just a by-guess-and-by-gosh tourist attraction. Still, I took some pix.

4. I still have Ani DiFranco's performance bouncing around in my ears and eyes.

5. It is quiet here without Daughter and Babycakes.

6. Wholesale inflation came out today. 9.2%! Retail inflation will be announce later.

7. I don't care a bit about the children of Anjibrat.

8. I'm taking my photographic entries to the fair today. I got ribbons in Lake County, so now I have unreasonably high expectations. Parbly get my commupance.

9. I'm working on my creative writing homework. Not terribly inspired. Where is that damn Muse?

10. I've pared my blogroll too much. Gotta find some fresh meat.

For all those who thought that Orkut was the most popular social networking site across the globe, heres a realty check...it's not!!! what's more? it's not even in the top 4 social networks of the world.

The top 4 include myspace.com, facebook.com, Flickr and Classmates online. MySpace had a staggering 73 million visitors in May 2008...Unbelievable huh!! thats more than twice the total estimated Indian online population!!!

[wp_caption id="attachment_55" align="aligncenter" width="415" caption="Comscore Top social networks"][/wp_caption]
[wp_caption id="attachment_56" align="aligncenter" width="415" caption="Indian population Online"][/wp_caption]

Myspace.com belongs to Fox Interactive media which in turn belongs to News Corporation ( the same company that owns STAR Tv in India )

It was initially built by a company called euniverse ( later renamed to Intermix Media Limited) and was inspired by Friendster.com, another popular social networking site. The site along with its parent company was later sold, in July 2005 to Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation for $ 580 million!!!

Myspace.com was launched in India on 17th April 2008 and looks to garner a chunk of the Indian Social networking space.

The dog days are almost upon us as the great Sun has reached its northern zenith, and is already ten days into its six month voyage back to the equator and beyond. While the reminder that the days are now slowly but surely getting shorter may be something of a buzzkill; the summer solstice just means that the season is now racing forward in high gear like Hunter S. Thompson in his Cadillac, ‘The White Whale,’ doing 90 miles per hour through the desert on the road from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Summer is Americana at its finest: ballgames and barbecues, the lakes and the shores, camping and hiking, lots of hours and little clothing. It’s easy to get lost in it all.

No matter how old you get, or what you end up doing for a living, these months will always manage to capture that essence of your childhood summer vacations. Lost in warm nostalgia, I got to thinking about those summer-reading lists we all got assigned back in the day, and how they relate to this blog. One of the main purposes of my writing is help steer people towards better channels of information. It’s not so much about presenting what I see as the truth (although this perspective will be pervasive throughout), because ultimately we all must determine “the truth” for ourselves. No, here at the Monday Morning Punter we are more about getting our readers better tools to make said determination.

If you, the reader, come away from this blog with only one thing stuck in your mind, like a fly buzzing around in there, let it be this: virtually all the information that is available for mass and convenient consumption is disseminated by a small handful of mega media giants. Let me repeat that: everything you read, see, and hear, all comes from high atop 5 humongous media pyramids – Viacom/CBS, GE/NBC, AOL/Time Warner, Disney/ABC, & NewsCorp/FOX. And bullshit certainly runs down the side of a pyramid much faster than down a hill.

A Scary Hypothetical

An Examination of Mass Media

Today the average American is working harder and longer for what is clearly less and less, especially when you take into account the meteoric rise in the cost of living. More than ever we need an informed citizenry aided by an independent media. But gone are the watchdogs. Gone are the pit-bulls; replaced now with one of Paris Hilton’s shitty little yapping lapdogs. No wonder we are only getting two minutes of Iraq coverage per night. No wonder Europeans laugh at the differences between the stories written by our respective medias. However, there is a brilliance coming to outline these thunder-clouds: the infant that is the Age of Information.

We are, all of us around the world, careening towards a time when the physical constraints of time and space will be rendered irrelevant as technology shrinks the planet to a neighborhood. Already we are seeing the seismic affects the internet is having on traditional media, evidence in the decline in nightly news viewers, and most strikingly in the apparent death rattle of the newspaper business. Now that people are getting their mainstream news from the same place and in the same format as the underground and independent media, namely, us. Articles from bloggers and Time staff writers now rub elbows; and YouTube videos catch fire and spread in a manner that Madison Avenue could only dream of. And when you combine all of this with an angry, fed-up, tech-savvy generation of citizens, who are tired of being pushed around by those with an insatiable greed for money and power, what you get is a revolution; a digital revolution fought with gigabytes instead of guns and bullets.

All this is well and good, but there is a catch: as more and more information is becoming available to us, we are often too busy to sift through it all. Because the Information Age has yet to start crawling, there is still a lot of catching-up to do when it comes to providing people with an alternative to the corporate raised horseshit being shoved down everyone’s collective throat. And there is still a lot of plumbing to do when it comes to a political system that is dependent on its media partner’s obfuscation, in order to distract the Voters from its ulterior motives. But inevitably this will all reach a critical mass, and, to paraphrase Princess Leia, “The more they tighten their grip, the more star systems will slip through their fingers.”

As we enter into the heart of the summer season, starting with this weekend’s Fourth of July celebrations, the reading lists of yesteryear, meant to keep us sharp and prepared for the rapidly approaching new school year, seem like an appropriate analogy for staying informed and prepared for this Autumn; and specifically the first Tuesday in November. Because so many of you out there are extremely busy and your time is very valuable, and because it is very easy to loose one’s self in the joys of summer vacation, the Monday Morning Punter is going to provide its “Summer Reading” series; which will certainly not be limited to just the printed word. A lot of the recommendations will come in the form of websites and blogs, as well as films and documentaries (some found on the web), and also some thought provoking and political music suggestions (yes, believe it or not, there is socially conscious music out there, and its growing). We will even recognize the few air pockets of independent thought found in the increasingly toxic cloud of the mainstream media visa vie the television. I spend many hours each day getting information from a wide array of sources, and have become very good at separating the wheat from the chaff.

So, stay tuned to the Monday Morning Punter throughout the week, and into the patriotic celebration of our United States of America’s 232nd birthday, for some alternative sources of information. And during this 4th of July, remember something that Thomas Jefferson once said/wrote:

"Convinced that the people are the only safe depositories of their own liberty, and that they are not safe unless enlightened to a certain degree, I have looked on our present state of liberty as a short-lived possession unless the mass of the people could be informed to a certain degree."--Thomas Jefferson to Littleton Waller Tazewell, 1805

DANDELION SALAD

The first item on the Summer Reading list is a remarkable blog that is constantly being updated with all sorts of alternative media. Here you will find articles, video, foreign media, and links to tons of other useful information. Some of the stuff you will come across on Dandelion Salad might make your head start spinning, but you will feel like you have awoken from a coma. If you really want to get informed about what is really going on behind the scenes, then bookmark this site, add it to your homepage, and don't go a week without dropping by. Lo, the site's founder and moderator, is the embodiment of Patriotism. Her motto is “Audio Panton, Cogito Singularis." Which is Latin for: Listen to everything, think for yourself.

So if you want the straight dope, Daddy-O, then go visit Lo over at the Dandelion Salad and grab a bowl.

Arbitrary Commentary

Andy had his primetime debut last Tuesday, and the only thing I can say is, "Hai, Majide!" If you got a chance to watch I Survived A Japanese Game Show then you know that "Majide" is the name of the popular program that our intrepid American brothers and sisters must compete on; and you would know that the name is loosely translated in English as, "You have to be crazy!" according to the pisser of a host, Rome Kanda (Majide is literally translated as, "Seriously?"). I Survived...premiered with some very solid ratings - an estimated 8 million people tuned in to watch moshi munching and treadmill face-plants. And, judging by the response to my blog, a number of those 8 million are already big fans of our man Andrew Kelly-Hayes. See for yourself in the comments section of my Andy feature. He is also apparently a big hit amongst the "bear" loving community. After the show, the Monday Morning Punter had a huge spike in hits, doubling the previous one day high.

On Sunday, June 29th, I reluctantly acknowledged the one year anniversary of a day in my life I'd rather forget. Let this be a cautionary tale for some of you out there. Last year some of us planned a weekend in Montreal, Canada, for a friends bachelor party; and most drove. Well, to make a long story short, our neighbors to the north weren't very neighborly, as I was greeted with the Heisman stiff-arm and told, thanks but no thanks, you can't come in. Now I know what you're thinking, but no, I did not have anything illegal in the car, and yes, I was on my best behavior. Nope: sometimes honesty is not the best policy; as was the case in this situation. Upon questioning after a random car check, I simply answered in the affirmative regarding past brushes with the law, as I figured there was nothing serious like a felony, and everything should have been wiped clean by now. Eight hours later I pulled into my driveway exhausted and agitated. I figured wrong. Fortunately, everyone else was able to make it in and have a ride. But the moral of this story is that if you are trying to cross the US/Canadian border, make sure you have your ducks in a row, or dummy up like Dick, Karl & Scooter, and simply say that you don't recall.

Sorry for not having a late week post up last week. That may happen now and again during the summer, as most weekends are chockfull, with some requiring preparation. It was great to be back in Connecticut these last two weekends; and it was wonderful to spend some quality time with so much family. And Friday, while back in lovely Fairfield county, I got this sweet tattoo as a birthday present from my brother, done by his friend Brian, who is an amazing artist. Thanks Chris and Brian. Here's a link to Brian's studio, the Iron Butterfly Tattoo, in Danbury, CT. If you are in the tri-state area, and are looking for some ink, its well worth the drive.
