Commento & Voto : Altro gruppo Italiano, questa volta però orientato al NuMetal. Nobody Excluded non è un cattivo album, ma non è ne carne ne pesce ovvero non ha un identita propria, prende ispirazione da più gruppi differenti e cerca di amalgamare il tutto cercando di essere originale (riuscendoci in parte). La voce di Masha è davvero particolare (anche se in alcune canzoni fa il verso alla cantante dei Guano Apes) unita alle ottime doti musicali del gruppo, non possono che far piacere all'orgoglio Italico. In "Nobody Excluded" spiccano "Your Rain" una bella ballata rock, "kill me" aggressiva e potente e "My Prophecy" con una ritmica accattivante. In conclusione un album decisamente sopra la sufficienza, ma ancora "acerbo" in quanto a personalità.

El origen de esta banda de Tres Cantos (Madrid) se remonta a 1991. Su primer nombre fue Deus Receptor y a imagen de sus ídolos foráneos, utilizaban el inglés en sus textos. Llegaron a grabar dos maquetas de buen nivel antes de 2002, año que supuso todo un punto de inflexión en su trayectoria: se pasaron al castellano, incorporaron un dj a la formación y desde entonces se les conoce como XXL.

Lo que empieza siendo un grupo de metal cruzado acaba empapándose de las nuevas tendencias para aproximarse a la parcela del nu-metal. Sus aptitudes les facilitan un contrato con la multinacional Warner, mediante el que se inicia su carrera discográfica. XXL debutan con ‘117 db’ (Warner, 2004), un álbum de sonido vigoroso y letras con mensaje social. La banda actúa en directo por toda la geografía española antes de volver al estudio para confeccionar su segunda entrega. La criatura lleva por título ‘(12.0) Richter’ (Warner, 2005) y mantiene a los madrileños en la primera línea del metal español.

A lo largo del 2008 tienen pensado sacar su nuevo disco llamado "Tercer día".

Usare il dub come collante universale per accorpare in una dadaistica figurazione svariati generi musicali, perlopiù legati al rock più duro, oggi non è solo un'idea, ma una vera e propria realtà. Alfieri di tale avanguardististico e singolare tentativo sono i Dub Trio, band giunta ormai al quarto album, protetta (e prodotta) dal “sapiente” fiuto manageriale del buon vecchio Patton, con cui condivide il progetto Peeping Tom.
Sedate le sfuriate punk dei precedenti lavori, il combo di Brooklyn sfoggia tutto il suo repertorio in quattordici tracce strumentali, eccetto una cantata da “Michelino”, ben suonate e ben coordinate, che evocano una sorta di gattino schizoide e sanguinario (vedi artwork) in preda a convulsioni lisergiche.
Un micidiale mix sonoro di contrazioni, crisi epilettiche ed annebbiamenti che si estende su più terreni stilistici: cadenzati ondeggiamenti dub intersecano sinistri riff doomy, possenti cimeli dei Refused rimbalzano su tappeti post-rock di manifattura mogwaiana, contorsioni noise, spruzzi di punk, velluti psy e chi più ne ha più ne metta. Insomma un minestrone, degno del leader dei Mr. Bungle, dal piglio accattivante e dalle strutture progressive.
Se non fosse per l'estrema instabilità mentale, che lo costringe sovente a mordersi la coda, il piccolo felino miracolosamente generato dal power trio potrebbe tranquillamente proporsi come nuovo sbandieratore Ipecac, purtroppo, invece, deve accontentarsi dei sorrisi e gli assensi provenienti dai suoi compiaciuti padroncini e da qualche loro amico di famiglia.
Another Sound Is Dying resta un buon disco, decisamente troppo lungo ed a volte monotono, ma di apprezzabile fattura.

O vocal, feminino, lembra a Karen O., do Yeah Yeah Yeahs, e o jeitão dance pop metidão soa como brit pop. É a evolução do Cansei de Ser Sexy. Sacou?

Skank Sinatra: electro / house / big beat, do Reino Unido
Já vale pelo trocaralho do cadilho. É o batidão do Sinatra. Som eletrônico, que em alguns momentos resvala no rock. Voltemos à pista!

Zoot Woman: não é o Echo & The Bunnymen disfarçado

Zoot Woman: alternativa / pop / eletrônica, de Londres, RU
Infelizemente não está no MySpace a ótima versão que eles fizeram para "Das Model / The Model", do Kraftwerk, mas tá valendo. Já sacou a onda, né? Som novo com ótimas influências de Kraftwerk, Joy Division, Soft Cell, Depeche Mode... Já gostei!

Tinha mais duas indicações, mas vou deixar pra outro dia, só pra poder atualizar mais aqui. Mesmo porque estes links aí já são suficientes para te divertir durante este fim de semana.

Se escutando Mogwai eu me sinto nas nuvens, Exxasens me faz sentir como se estivesse caindo das nuvens, perturbado, lutando para permanecer lá. É uma ótima sonoridade com belas melodias e uma agitação surpreendente. Não há um rótulo específico para classificar a banda. Há quem classifique como Post rock, Shoegazze ou somente instrumental, mas é uma mistura de tudo isso com uma visível influência de nu-metal. O resultado foi excelente, veja você mesmo.

Detaque: Polaris: Uma música pesada e um som experimental excelente.

Spiders on the Moon: Harmonia nas melodias e entre o pedal da bateria com a guitarra.

Esto es un "must have" para cualquier persona que disfrute del metal alternativo en su vertiente mas melódica. Un conjunto de canciones capaces de ponerte los pelos de punta, capaces de llenarte por dentro con un cúmulo de sentimientos increíbles. Pero también hay caña, porque, ante todo y sobre todo, Lostprophets son una banda de Metal. Eso si, no esperéis cosas extremas aquí. Esto es mas caña del tipo que disfrutaría un fan de Linkin Park o de Hoobastank. Así que, ya lo sabéis, si os van las melodías pegadizas y los estribillos altamente coreables, este es vuestro grupo.

36 Crazyfists es una banda proveniente de Alaska, influenciados por el post-hardcore de quicksand, la armonía de Deftones y Glassjaw y la agresividad de Skinlab.

36 Crazyfists esta formado, Brock Lindow (voz), Steve Holt (guitarra), Mick Whitney (bajo) y Thomas Noonan (batería). Después de lanzar su álbum de debut en 2002, “Bitterness the Star” un disco marcado por las influencias mas directas del nu metal y con la participación de Steev Esquivel ex vocalista de la banda thrash metal EXODUS actualmente de la exitosa banda de groove metal SKINLAB, Comenzaron un tour por los EE. UU. con grupos como Candiria, God Forbid, Chimaira, Diecast y Hotwire

Después de su tour por los EE.UU. fueron a Europa para comenzar la European Road Rage tour con Killswitch Engage y Five Pointe O. Cuando éste terminó, se tomaron un tiempo para escribir material para su siguiente álbum, “A Snow Capped Romance”, el cual vio la luz en 2004 enfocando sus influencias hacia el post hardcore y fue producido por James Wisner, quien trabajó con bandas de la escena emocore Dashboard Confessional y Further Seems Forever en el 2006 lanzan su tercera placa de larga duración por roadrunner records llamada “Rest Inside The Flames” que continua en la misma línea de su disco anterior con toques post hardcore y metalcore que cuentan la colaboración de HOWARD JONES de Killswitch Engage.

Korn es un grupo de Bakersfield, California que son mencionados como los que sentaron las bases del nu metal^. Junto con otros grupos de la época, fueron los que inspiraron muchas de las bandas de nu metal y Alternative Metal de los 90/00. Se formó en 1993 a raíz de la combinación de dos grupos: Sex Art donde cantaba Jonathan Davis y LAPD que estaba formado por James “Munky” Shaffer (Guitarra), David Silvera (Bateria), Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu (Bajo) y Brian “Head” Welch (Guitarra).

Sin duda alguna son los grandes del genero y su trayectoria asi lo demuestra, con discos tan variados desde el nu metal puro de “Follow the Leader” hasta la combinación con electronica en el “See you in the Other Side”.

Mandaron los 2 EP a las distintas discografías para demostrar su calidad musical y que el otro EP no les salió de casualidad. La banda tuvo éxito al salir su single «Stupify» al 2000 y seguidamente el álbum The Sickness. El álbum los lanzó al éxito. Después de participar en el Ozzy Osbourne’s Ozzfest tour en el 2001, la banda empezó con el «Music as a Weapon» Tour.

En octubre del 2002, su segundo álbum Believe debutó como un gran éxito estando entre los número 1 de las listas de éxitos, y al 2003, el grupo participó en el Ozzfest tour otra vez.

Negli anni ’80 un evento del genere non sarebbe potuto accadere, e non mi riferisco ovviamente alla sponsorizzazione di un festival da parte di una marca di zaini pensati apposta per i gggiovani d’oggi, ma al fatto che le band sponsorizzate suonino dei generi in cui il suffisso “core” è più o meno evidente. Mi viene da pensare alla diatriba Nike - Minor Threat; ma più in generale è difficile immaginare un festival come l’Eastpak Etnika Rock nella Washington dell’81. E non parliamo poi d’Italia, dove l’hardcore è stato, e in alcuni casi lo è ancora, il genere anti-sistema per eccellenza.

La mia non vuole essere una critica, ben vengano festival gratuiti (e ben organizzati) soprattutto in zone musicalmente depresse come il Basso Lazio, ma che prospettive ha la musica alternativa se è veicolata da un mercato che cerca continuamente spazi commerciali in cui infiltrarsi e prosperare? La risposta forse ce l’abbiamo già. Arrivato ai cancelli del campo da baseball di Ceccano per il primo giorno del festival in questione (il secondo giorno, non attinente con la linea baronale, non verrà trattato) mi ritrovo davanti alla “fiera del capello”. Finalmente mi posso rendere conto del devastante impatto di MTV sugli adolescenti che cominciano ad ascoltare il rock; orde di ragazzini con centinaia d’euro di lacca e coloranti sui capelli, bambine che sembrano uscite da un manga e maschietti androgini con l’eyeliner, le sopracciglia depilate e stelline ovunque. Come direbbe l’indimenticata Sora Lella: “Annamo bbene, proprio bbene!”

Il festival è a due palchi, uno più grande griffato “Eastpak Music Bomb” e l’altro più piccolo con la scritta “Etnika Rock”, l’alternanza sarà la costante della giornata. Iniziano i Sinful Breed, metalcore band locale che ha il merito di far iniziare il concertone col piede giusto; le influenze stilistiche sono assolutamente in linea con la giornata, con evidenti richiami a Killswitch Engage, Caliban e Bleeding Through. Nonostante un sole africano, volano i primi spintoni e le prime sberle grazie a canzoni ben costruite e coinvolgenti. Dopo una ventina di minuti gli applausi giungono meritati per una band che, nel poco tempo avuto a disposizione, non si è davvero risparmiata. I gruppi immediatamente dopo (The Beauty, Your Hero), seppur tecnicamente discreti, non mi hanno convinto affatto; sempre alla ricerca della melodia facilona e dello stacco piacione, ipnotizzano solo i ragazzini in prima fila.

Altra storia con gli At the Soundawn, band modenese influenzata da Neurosis e Isis, che ci propone sonorità che il pubblico dell’Etnika mastica decisamente poco. I post-corer sono già un gruppo maturo e si vede; mi fanno pensare a dei Burst più dilatati e polverosi con Scott Kelly alla voce. Purtroppo credo che un festival del genere non sia il posto più indicato per assistere a un loro concerto, spero di bissare in una location più racchiusa e meno luminosa.

E arrivò il tempo del metallo sul palco B; i friulani Slowmotion Apocalypse salgono belli tosti e ci sparano addosso un bel death-thrash col “core”. L’attitudine è quella giusta e coinvolge, riffoni svedesi e ritmiche serrate conducono più di qualcuno all’headbanging sfrenato, il tutto è condito da assoloni che sanno di Bay Area. Le canzoni, per lo più quelle di Obsidian, hanno molto più tiro dal vivo che su disco e sono la prova lampante che non bisogna per forza nascere in Scandinavia per fare del metallo con le palle. Complimenti ai The Haunted italiani!

I due gruppi dopo (gli inglesi Your Demise e i portoghesi Devil In Me) erano in evidente overdose di testosterone. Per carità, erano anche bravi a riproporre tutti, ma proprio tutti, i clichè resi famosi da Hatebred (i primi) e Sick of it All (i secondi), ma qui siamo nel campo delle cover-band; basta forse saltare come scimmioni sul palco e sbraitare aggressivamente per fare hardcore? Mah..

Coi Bring Me The Horizon, lo ammetto, mi trovo in seria difficoltà. Ero partito coi pregiudizi peggiori: la boy band del metalcore, un look studiato per acchiappare le bambine che guardano TRL, una creazione di quei modaioli di Kerrang e cose del genere. Non che tutti i miei pregiudizi fossero infondati, tutt’altro, ma i cinque inglesini dal vivo vanno proprio forte; il loro deathcore estremo, seppur non innovativo, è molto ben suonato e potente. La padronanza tecnica è certamente invidiabile, mai visto degli adolescenti suonare meglio, ma il solo guardarli mi fa venire voglia di sguinzagliare lo zombie di GG Allin ricoperto di sangue e merda tra le bimbe-fan piene di stelline e cuoricini. Possono migliorare tantissimo, però prima interniamoli per almeno un decennio sul Monte Athos a riflettere sul senso della vita, male che va torneranno con qualche pelo di barba.

I “romani de Roma” To Kill sono il penultimo gruppo ad esibirsi sul palco B; il loro hardcore straight-edge è, come al solito, una macchina da guerra. Chi li ha visti sa bene cosa sanno regalare al pubblico in termini di impatto e coinvolgimento; i nostri infiammano il palco con la solita performance furiosa e aggressiva che piace e convince. I “sermoni” animalisti del cantante Josh scontentano più di qualcuno, ma pazienza, l’hardcore è anche questo ed è giusto che sia così.

I Comeback Kid avrebbero dovuto essere gli headliner della prima giornata del festival, ma a causa di un ritardo aereo dei Caliban, la loro esibizione è stata anticipata. Confesso che conoscevo i canadesi solo di nome e non mi aspettavo chissà che; mi sono ricreduto velocemente. I ragazzotti di Winnipeg fanno un hardcore violento ma allo stesso tempo personale ed efficace, non obsoleto ma nemmeno sputtanato. Si percepisce chiaramente che sono loro i grandi attesi della serata, il pubblico va in visibilio per le note di Wake The Dead e Defeated, creando un bel polverone sotto il palco. Ottima band e ottima resa sonora, una miscela di passione e professionalità che conquista anche gli applausi di chi non era venuto per loro.

Sul palco B si conclude la serata con gli storici Shai Hulud, per chi scrive di gran lunga il miglior gruppo del lotto. Della formazione del seminale Hearts once Nourished with Hope and Compassion è rimasto il solo chitarrista Matt Fox, ma la passione è quella di sempre; il loro metalcore (quello vero) è sia muscoli che testa, passaggi intricati e cervellotici si alternano a sfuriate degne del miglior old school americano. Qui non c’è solo mera tecnica o violenza fine a sé stessa, qui ci sono i contenuti, quelli che rendono una band memorabile. Il singer si fionda innumerevoli volte sui fedelissimi e offre loro il microfono come nella migliore tradizione del genere, cementando l’unità di intenti tra chi sta sul palco e chi sotto. Canzoni come My Heart Bleeds the Darkest Blood e la più recente Venomspreader (dall’ultimo disco Misanthropy Pure) sono la prova che nonostante i molti cadaveri (Earth Crisis, Morning Again, Strongarm, Point of No Return ecc) la scena metalcore originaria abbia ancora uno dei suoi migliori alfieri in ottima forma. Molto bella la dedica finale di Matt Fox all’hardcore italiano di ieri e di oggi. Horns up!

Quando i Caliban salgono sul palco le sette ore di festival si fanno sentire sul groppone ma quasi tutti resistono stoici. I tedeschi sono una delle band più prevedibili che abbia mai visto; metalcore standard coi soliti “stopponi” in ogni canzone, il riffetto svedese e il ritornellino melodico. La resa sonora è ovviamente ottima anche se il batterista ha un suono tanto triggerato da risultare eccessivamente finto. Dico la verità, non apprezzo questa band dai tempi del loro passaggio sotto Roadrunner; da quando insomma sono diventati la fiera del clichè. Fanno eseguire anche un bel wall of death al pubblico. Ecco, credo che questa sia l’unica cosa che mi ricorderò del loro concerto, per il resto mi hanno sorpreso come la vittoria del Dream Team di basket alle Olimpiadi del 1992. Scontati scontati scontati.

Tirando le somme penso che un festival del genere, seppur ben organizzato e a tratti davvero godibile, debba per forza di cose trovare una direzione artistica meno vincolata da label e sponsor; la strada è difficilmente percorribile ma non irrealizzabile. Agli organizzatori di Etnika Rock va comunque il merito storico di aver creato un evento in una provincia, quella di Frosinone, in cui per anni l’unico appuntamento musicale di rilievo è stato esclusivamente il vetusto Liri Blues. Dal canto suo il Barone del Male non può che dare il giusto supporto a iniziative del genere.

Disturbed es una banda de Nu-Metal formada en 1996 en Chicago, Illinois cuando Dan Donegan, Steve "Fuzz" Kmak y Mike Wengren se juntaron con el vocalista David Draiman. Draiman sugirió el nombre de la banda. Disturbed muestra fuertes influencias al Heavy metal de los '90 incorporando solos de guitarra y riffs más técnicos.

La banda trabajó muy duro en los primeros años, grabando dos demos EPs los cuales fueron enviadas a distintas discografías. Mandaron los 2 EP a las distintas discografías para demostrar su calidad musical y que el otro EP no les salió de casualidad. La banda tuvo éxito al salir su single «Stupify» al 2000 y seguidamente el álbum The Sickness. El álbum los lanzó al éxito. Después de participar en el Ozzy Osbourne’s Ozzfest tour en el 2001, la banda empezó con el «Music as a Weapon» Tour.

En octubre del 2002, su segundo álbum Believe debutó como un gran éxito estando entre los número 1 de las listas de éxitos, y al 2003, el grupo participó en el Ozzfest tour otra vez.

I admit it. I didn’t really like dance music or electronic music before I got into the New Alternative. Growing up a little rocker kid I was always a fan of actual songs with catchy hooks, distinct lyrics, strong melodies… not these seemingly boring, repetitive things called DJ mixes and / or VIP tunes. If you wanted something to hit you right, you put on the Smashing Pumpkins, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Bush - Everything Zen. The Offspring - Self Esteem. Radiohead - Paranoid Android. But times changed. 9/11 killed all of us a little bit inside, and it metaphorically laid the seeds for the creation of a new musical aesthetic, of the New Alternative.

Woodstock 99 inaugurated the era of caricatures of the original energy of 90s grunge and hip hop, Creed-esque rock, Nu-Metal and Gangsta Rap. Of course there were different trends there too, but these have been the predominant trends in our culture as the Billboard charts have historically shown. Pearl Jam derivatives developed into Creed and now Nickelback and crew. Tupac and Biggie gave rise to a whole culture of rapper imitations. But like the history books show, there have always been other trends there too.

Outside of their similar sheer noisy dissonance, Korn sounded nothing like Nirvana. It hit at a chord in the public that resonated. People felt the pain underneath the feel good 90s. The extramarital affairs of our drinking, drugged out parents hurt us deeply. So did presidential terms engulfed in sex scandals. Our country became a little less innocent and alot more emo. But emo didn’t come out of the blue. The Cure and the Smith’s were popular in the 80s, but the 90s wasn’t about that same sense of self absorption, it was more about punching reality in the face, just listen to any Rage Against the Machine album and you know what I mean.

But like all things, the hippest trends are usually derived by something that is at least 20 years old, and we see at the dawn of the 2000’s a resurgence of interest in the 80s. The Killers, the Bravery, the Faint, Coheed and Cambria sounding like a carbon copy of Geddy Lee (yet totally different), jangly nu-brit rock bands like the Strokes, the Hives, etc; the rediscovery of the Gang of Four and the bands inspired by them such as Bloc Party, We are Scientists, etc, and groups like Fischerspooner bringing back the sequenced sounds of 80s electro into their classic album, Odyssey.

Isn't it appropriate that at the dawn of the 2010's we see the development of a new music that takes it's energy and inspiration, in my mind at least, from the sheer violence and electricity of the 90s. Straight up, no chaser here, Trent Reznor and his music was phenomenally ahead of it's time. Say what you will about the lyrics; his use of sequencing electronic instruments, layering distorted sounds versus clear / basic sounds, and his strong DIY ethic is, to my mind, the driving, inspirational energy that propels the creation of this new electronic alternative music.

Nine Inch Nails, in it's early incarnation, took the trends of electronic music and brought them together into a cohesive, pop-oriented music focused towards a mass audience. It had raw sexuality, pop melody writing, and shocking, stunning noise. Similarly, the new alternative, which saw it's first salvo occur with groups like Justice, Digitalism, Boys Noize, et al, has the same sense of electricity. Just listen to Waters of Nazareth and you can hear the beginnings of a raw, bloody, jarring, convulsing sound, which has since grown into a large array of styles which we at Straight No Chasa conveniently call New Alternative ( for simplicitie's sake)

Of course, there is another set of trends that totally underlie the growth of this new music, namely that aforementioned 'boring' dance music which I didn't grow to appreciate till recently. The origins of House, Detroit Techno, and more importantly, Drum n Bass, gave rise to the techniques and mindset which provides the philosophical and technical foundation for making this new type of music. But that is something which would require a whole entire other set of posts to elucidate. The point here is simply this, the New Alternative isn't about emotions, it's about fucking dancing. It's about punching reality in the face, just like NIN, just like the 90's.

Appropriately, I gather that people expect that on these new types of blogs that there should be music posted on here to satisfy a need to actually HEAR that of which we so passionately seek, read about, and oh yes, listen to. First up on our hitlist from great tunes to grace our emailbox from this week, a huge remix from up-coming and unknown, to us at least to now, producer Meterhead from LA. Their remix of Busta Rhymes' song Get Down is absolutely off the hook. From it's huge fidget step bass line, whateva that means, to its fucking hot use of Busta's rappin, this remix is absolutely and uberly hot. I wanna hear that motherfucka say... DL this shit cuz it be blowin up.

They might not be Daft Punk, but Romulus and Remus wrote what is one of the hardest banger tunes that I've heard in a good while. Wait till it hits around 1:00 into the mix: it's a huge party rocker that is definitely hip and legit. They haven't got much press but they seem to be friends with the very cool Trashbagskids Blog from that land down under. Look into them both!

Corporate America seems to be taking a liking to new hip, alternative stuff. Look at the recent Scion sponsered IHEARTCOMIX Mix. Nike here apparently sponsored the awesome group Goose in creating a new tune to run too. I'm not exactly sure if I would run to electro, but I would definitely take this tune and mix it into my live sets to create complete, utter, awesome chaosness. Buy it now!

I heard on NBC the other night that Brazil's commodities market is booming, as is the rest of their economy. Other than that news, or from Marky, I don't know of much other stuff happening in that large place known as Brazil. Thank the lord I recently discovered young fellow alt-dudes from Sao Paolo, Database. Here's a distorted, discofied remix of Scenario Rock's, Both Gotta Move On. Exciting, propulsive, Electro-DJ-friendly Sweetness.

And last but hardly least, here is a great remix of some dude known as Usher. Taking the basic structure of the original tune, Morsy's remix clubifies it into a hot, poppin' mix. This is one of those remixes where the words 'tasteful adjustment' are quite appropriate. This tune is very similar to the original, yet at the same time, it's not. It has a huge, extroverted dancefloor sensibility the original lacks. I love it, let's bang.
