Det var inte svårt att låta ilskan ta över redan efter några rader. Jonathan hade varit på en konferens på Palmecentret som vad jag förstod skulle ha handlat om fred men det slutade med att den handlade om hur många punkter de inbjudna talarna kunde rada upp mot Israels existens. HÄR PRATAR VI OM PALMECENTRET!! Detta center finns för att medverka till fred och skapa den här typen av diskussioner och konferenser. Så vad jag inte kan förstå är varför man bjuder in talare som går ut helt öppet med att vara mot Israels existens och dess invånare som är israeliska medborgare. Jag har bott i detta fantastiska land i 1 år och jag har umgåtts med såväl israeler som araber som beduiner. Jag kan inte säga att jag vet att det kan funka med en tvåstatslösning men jag tycker att det är en bättre lösning än en enstatslösning. I en tvåtstatslösning är även palestinierna inräknade så att de ska få sin egna stat. Jag tycker att det är sanslöst respektlöst att bjudan in talare till en fredens hus och fredens konferens som är uttalat emot Israel och dess existens. Jag kan förstå den ilska som finns i världen mot detta vackra land men det hjälper inte att vara emot dess existens det inbjuder inte till en lösning och det skapar bara mer ilska och frustration hos båda parter. Plus att jag kan inte för mitt liv förstå varför svenska politiker tar ställning mot Israel och dess existens när de själva inte ens varit i landet och talat med politikerna från båda sidor. Det är helt sanslöst. Det är inte första gången det händer och det kan inte nog uttryckas med ordet frustration hos mig. Jag är så satans trött på alla dessa svenskar som tror att de vet och säger att det de säger är sanningen om hur det är när de inte ens satt sin fot där. Varför gör de detta om och om och om igen? Det retar upp mig nåt som in i norden. Jag gör aldrig så om andra länder. Jag kan t.ex. inte sitta och säga att jag vet hur Palestinerna har det eller hur deras önskade stat fungerar idag, just av den anledningen att jag inte bor där och jag har inte heller satt min fot där plus att jag har inte talat med tillräckligt många palestiner för att kunna lägga min näsa i blör.

Consequently, I've tended to comprehensively explore the creative output of a number of key artists on a cyclic basis, periodically expanding the list of artists as I go. However, the sequential nature of this approach means that I can easily remain almost completely ignorant of the work of many other artists - even major ones - for years at a stretch.

And then, one day, I'll stumble across something which grabs me by the throat and beats me about the head repeatedly with its sheer unadulterated, vibrant, radiant, pulsating wonderfulness.

Something which screams "go out and buy every album this person ever produced right now and spend the next three weeks immersing yourself in their brilliance, you ignorant dolt!"

Truly great art by a truly great artist. The lyrics "a great love cut her life" are both prophetic and acutely poignant in light of Ofra Haza's tragic death of AIDS-related complications in 2000, at the age of only 42 - a consequence of contracting the HIV virus from her "great love" - husband, Doron Ashkenazi.  

Thankfully we can still delight in her prodigious musical legacy...

Here is a wonderful video of a lutenist playing Visée. I can't seem to find the lutenist's name, though I will dig around and see if it's somewhere. He is playing in a "grotto" - some theatrical conceit, I believe, and not a natural formation - and he is playing a Baroque lute. He is really good. I like the over-the-top setting for playing such music; and I like the wide, ebony-veneered fingerboard - and all those strings. As the lutenist forms the figures of chords with his LH fingers on that vast grid of a fingerboard I imagine it to be the night sky, and the lutenist picks out constellations with his fingertips to produce chords.

Here is Björk singing her song Unravel. Of note is that in this video she (or ought I say 'She') is accompanied by someone playing a virginal, and you kind of get to see and hear Björk "up close" as she makes those sounds that only Björk seems to be able to ravish us with. It's particularly beautiful because of the accompaniment, I think.

This one is beautiful music accompanying some heartbreaking images, which you might want not to view (Black and white photos of the body of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko after it was pulled from the water of the Vistula Water Reservoir after he was thrown in there, bound but still alive, by goons from the government of Poland while it was still under Communist rule). The reason I am including this as one of my favorites is that the music that accompanies the sorrowful video is sung by our own Joan Baez, and she is truly magnificent. Haunting, sad, and extraordinarily beautiful.

Here's a b&w video from 1978 with Ofra Haza singing with a bunch of groovy-looking people in the background. I have no idea what the song is about, and it sounds actually to my ears as if it is in a mixture of Hebrew and Arabic, or maybe what I am hearing is Yemeni Hebrew, or my ears are crap and it's just plain Modern Hebrew. Anyway, it shows Ofra Haza while she was still straightening her hair and looking like a 'Seventies chick, before she became the other ravishing incanation of herself, the Ofra Haza of the 'Eighties and 'Nineties, featuring much bigger hair and a return to natural eyebrows, as well as what we could think of as her signature style. Sigh. And I love the Spoken Word guy at the beginning - very hot combination of language and musical rhythm.

Here is a wonderful weird video of a guy belly dancing - I guess in Cairo, though he is wearing a fluorescent yellow shirt that says BRAZIL on it. Never mind. Anyway, it is short and the sound quality isn't wonderful, but it's curiously sexy. He is hot because he's cute but he's also hot because he is dancing completely in his own essence, and is obviously having the time of his life out there in the alleyway shaking his parts while his neighbors watch.

The Queen of England. How does she get her vowels to sound that scary-rich?

Death Star Canteen, with Eddie Izzard. Some use of the F-word, which doesn't bother me in the least, but I'm telling you in case you do.

Dunno who they are, dunno where they are, but here is a moment of music for sure.

My twin sister singing recently. (Not YouTube) Unfortunately I don't have a voice like that but I'm just pleased as punch to be her twin brother!

Ravi Miriam Maron/Call from the Narrows

Ravi Miriam Maron's Call from the Narrows is a double-CD set of Hebraic chants and spiritually powered world music. Recalling the transcendent mix of ancient vocal stylings and modern arrangements that made Dead Can Dance and the late Ofra Haza so alluring, Maron is able to take what could only be appealing to a specific crowd and make it attractive a far larger audience. The dreamlike, otherworldly textures of Maron's singing will draw inevitable comparisons to Enya; however, Maron's music digs deeper than that, drawing upon Biblical and other centuries-old text.

If, upon reading the description above, you think that Call from the Narrows isn't easy to sit through, let me assure you that it isn't. This is music that not only soothes the ears but the soul as well. On "Clear the Way," Maron's vocals are as ethereal as the evening stars; they will enchant you, dazzle you. "Great Mother" has punchy drums with a straighforward dance rhythm a la Haza and Peter Gabriel. "Preparation" and "I Must Follow" are songs of incredible beauty.

1989 brachte der VEB Deutsche Schallplatten eine kleine Platte mit 4 Liedern dieser Sängerin heraus. Darunter auch dieses Lied. Das ist jetzt schon 19 Jahre her. Kinder, wie die Zeit vergeht!

Die Frau muss eine faszinierende Person gewesen sein, dem Wikipediaeintrag nach zu urteilen.

E quella magia, per noi, si ripercuote nella letteratura, nella lingua e nella musica.

Di tanto in tanto nel nostro Paese, un artista "orientale" diventa famoso.

Era il 1988 e pure io fui folgorato dalla bellissima voce e dall'incantevole volto di una donna israeliana: Ofra Haza.

La canzone è la popolarissima "Im Nin'Alu". Si tratta di un poema del rabbino Shalom Shabazi, il testo del poema, come riportato da wikipedia e come cantato nella canzone inizia con:

Im nin'alu daltei n'divim daltei marom lo nin'alu

tradotto più o meno in

Se i cancelli del ricco sono chiusi, i cancelli del paradiso non lo saranno mai.

(Nota personale: il video parte con quel potente "Im Nin Alu" e un primo piano altrettanto potente. Che bella donna! La voce di Ofra Haza è incredibile, si tratta di un mezzo-soprano, ma la lingua in cui canta sembra aumentarne l'estensione)

Queste canzoni, furono quelle che lanciarono Ofra Haza come cantante internazionale.

Durante questo periodo, la sua voce, è stata prestata a varie collaborazioni. Ad esempio

"Give peace a Chance" del 1991:

"Temple of Love" dei The sisters of Mercy, un gruppo rock-gothic, anno 1992:

Salto indietro nel tempo!

Quasi sconosciuta a noi occidentali sono le origini artistiche di Haza. Non ci pensiamo quasi mai, ma essendo una Israeliana ha svolto il servizio di leva.

Fa quasi "tenerezza" vederla cantare una canzone dedicata a "Flash Gordon", tratta dal suo primo album, 1980, "Al Ahavot Shelanu" ("Our Love", "(Il) Nostro Amore"):

o mentre canta, dallo stesso CD "Shir Ahava Lachayal" ("Canzone d'amore per il soldato"):

o quella che fu la canzone che la rese famosa in patria "Frecha's Song", in inglese traducibile più o meno in "Bimbo's Song", la canzone di una donna che pensa solo a divertirsi, qui l'interpretazione è presa da un film in cui Haza ha recitato:

(Nota personale: ehm...la preferisco come cantante, non voglio dire che sapesse recitare, ma con una voce come la sua...)

Del suo secondo album, "Bo Nedaber" ("Let's Talk", "Parliamo") i brani più noti sono "Tfila", "Preghiera":

e "Simanim Shel Ohavim" ("Lover's Signs", "Segni degli amanti"),

È con il terzo album, 1982, "Pituyim" (Tentazioni) che raggiunge una maggiore notorietà ed alcuni noti parolieri iniziano a scrivere canzoni per lei. Un esempio "Gabriel":

(Nota personale: l'immagine che avevo di lei...beh dopo queste canzoni è cambiata. Non avrei mai detto che all'inizio si fosse concessa una così grande parentesi nella musica pop! Non che mi dispiaccia! Anche se non si capiscono i testi, le canzoni hanno delle musiche simpatiche)

Ma è il 1983 che segna un gran cambiamento nella sua carriera artistica. In quell'anno partecipa al Euro Festival con la canzone "Chai" (Viva). Il festival si teneva nella città di Monaco, Munich..., passata alla cronaca per il tristissimo episodio delle Olimpiadi del '72, e la canzone proposta da Haza acquisì un senso patriottico visto che conteneva la frase "Am Yisrael chai" (Il popolo di Israele vive):

(Nota personale: quindi, anche se leggera come musica...contiene al suo interno un fortissimo messaggio politico!)

Grazie a questa partecipazione, e al secondo posto raggiunto, divenne una "eroina" in Israele, e nel 1984, oltre all'album Bait Ham ("A Place For Me", "Un posto per me"), pubblicò l'album "Yemenite Songs" (Canzoni yemenite). Album che si rivelò un punto di svolta nella carriera di Haza. Qui la possiamo vedere mentre si scatena in un ballo dopo aver cantato "Lefelach Harimon" ("As a slice of pomegranate", "Come una fetta di melograno") canzone tradizionale eseguita durante un matrimonio.

(Nota personale: c'è di tutto in questo video, musica occidentale, musica orientale, balletti... Ofra scatenata...divertimento senza problemi e un po' senza senso come accade nei matrimoni. Bello!)

L'anno dopo, 1985, pubblicò l'album "Adama" (Terra):

contenente anche "Goral Echad" (One fate, Un destino)

E questo ci riporta più o meno al punto da cui siamo partiti. Alla sua fama mondiale. E alla nota più triste: il 23 febbraio 2000. Il giorno in cui attraversò i cancelli del paradiso.

Voglio lasciarvi con una versione del 1978 di "Im nin'Alu", in cui possiamo ammirare una Ofra Haza giovane e piena di speranze:

Dösvår att få tag på DVD dock. Finns inte utgiven i Sverige. Och de få VHS:er som kan finnas kvar i landet - att köpa alltså - har jag i alla fall inte fått tag på. Enda alternativet (om man inte hittar nån fin hub eller att nån tillgänglig TV-kanal snart sänder den) är att importera från England eller USA. Som jag tänker göra... nån dag...! Om inte jag får köpa Casablancas slitna VHS nångång. Heh.

Colourbox were known for a maverick ‘86 World Cup theme, and AR Kane indulged in psychedelic shoe-gazing pop. Dave Dorrell and CJ Mackintosh bucked up their ideas for them and gave us a seminal No.1. Yeah, sampling wasn’t new, but for the punter at large a record consisting solely of samples was a new and frightening thing. It’s odd to think of the furore now. Lawsuits aplenty, not least from the blissfully backward Stock, Aitken and Waterman. Weeks earlier, they’d delighted in white labels of ‘Roadblock’ fooling the fashion-conscious DJs into championing Rick Astley’s svengalis, now they took their ball home when they could’ve been enjoying even greater kudos. Ironic, doncha think?

Oddly, this is still a meaty-sounding record. Put it next to the flimsy ‘Jack Your Body’ and see the Brits breaking the new ground. By the end, Junior was applauding.
