<p>In the book, <em>Breakthrough thinking: Brainstorming for inspiration and ideas</em>, Nick Souter suggests that "ideas are very fragile" and advises that great ideas "should only be exposed in an environment where they will be nurtured, developed, and made to happen."</p>
<p>I understand. You probably understand, too.</p>
<p>Who has not experienced the thrill of thinking a great "Think" - as Dr. Seuss might say it. It bubbles up inside of you, explodes right in the middle of a team meeting, and then... What happens next is completely out of your control. Your great idea is waiting... for consideration, acceptance, judgement.</p>
<p>Will your idea find a nurturing home in which to grow?</p>
<p>Will it come face to face with a combat unit of sniper pilots on a mission to save the company from the time waster of yet another absurd idea?</p>
<p>Will it receive what I call the "South Park Blink of Avoidance." You know the blink... one of the South Park characters says something - usually creative - the whole town blinks in silence and waits for someone else to say something different to take the conversation down another path, saving them from having to acknowledge a new and perhaps uncomfortable idea.</p>
<p>Souter's book is a refreshing combination of insightful <em>information</em> about how we, as a culture, do NOT handle new ideas well, and practical <em>tools</em> to help us break out of the negative patterns of discouragement that we often share too freely with those people in our work and home environments.</p>

<p>A number of companies are reporting cost reduction strategies in the face of a challenging economy.  Many of these so called 'strategies' to reduce cost include hiring freezes, basically a strategy to limit new hires and realize cost reduction through workforce attrition.  Hiring freezes as a cost reduction strategy is simply a knee jerk reactionary move that flies in the face of strategic cost management.  The looming retirement of baby boomer workforce has employers struggling to keep pace with hiring needs.  During this war for talent companies can not afford to sit on the sidelines for a couple of years as a method to control costs.  <strong>Profits</strong> are a function of <strong>people</strong> and <strong>process</strong>, the right strategy executed by the right people.  A hiring freeze simply is a short cut easy answer based on archaic practices, and could prove to be disastrous for companies in the long term.</p>
<p>To have a positive impact corporate finance should carefullly look at corporate spending and the alignment of that spending to strategic objectives.  When times get tough, the tough do 3 things:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Protect the Core </strong>- ensure that spending that directly supports current revenue streams is not adversely affected by cost reductions.  In fact these areas may need additional funding to protect revenues, market share and customer value in a weak economy.</li>
<li><strong>Invest in top strategic initiatives</strong> - only approve funding on projects or positioning efforts where it is clearly aligned to the company's top strategic objectives, focusing on those that should provide the highest return on investment.</li>
<li><strong>Mitigate 'real' risks</strong> - too often the 'sky is falling' approach is used to secure funding for initiatives.  Fear should not drive stakeholder spending decisions.  Finance has to make sure that spending to mitigate risk is effective and protecting the company against a real and reasonable threat.</li>
</ol>
<p>However, if these cost reduction strategies prove to be to challenging to implement.  A better alternative to hiring freezes would be to eliminate corporate ego spending such as corporate jets and other unnecessary luxury purchases.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Many things keep me up at night...but the thing that probably occupies my mental space the most is people - despite being an IT manager, I admit that IT isn't what I think at night (but don't tell my employer). My organizational capabilities stem from the quality of people I have. Needless to say that my success and failure depends on how I development, motivate, lead, direct, support my team to achieve our functional and business strategic objectives. Quite scary if you think about it - someone who works for me, could get me fired (see HBR OnPoint Article 1723 by Linda Hill for an interesting read on what it means to be "the Boss"). And being that I'm a selfish individual interested only in my self-preservation, neglecting this basic managerial work would be a "career limiting" move, you'd think? Of course, I don't just think about "my functional" people, but all people in the organization because engaging with staff is an opportunity to learn, teach, share information and isn't that what "knowledge workers" are supposed to be doing?</p>
<p>So with this period of immense competitive business challenges, our organization is also moving to develop new internal capabilities and skill sets to meet them which means - recruitment. I learned something during the process -- it's damn hard and it's really damn hard. My experience tracks....umm, validates, Anonymous CIO's piece in his <a href="http://www.cio.com/article/103153/Why_IT_Recruiting_Can_Be_Your_Hardest_Job?contentId=103153&#38;slug=&#38;">CIO Confidential column from March 2000(!)</a> - surprised? The more things change, the more things stay the same!</p>
<p>I'd put it another way:<br />
1. IT depts need to be stable because IT service is a 24x7x365 function and no amount of SLAs and outsourcing will ever provide close to what the core internal IT team must do for its customer. That's why indiscriminate outsourcing strategies are demoralizing to staff because they're like earthquakes to the team. The nature of IT service doesn't change, but how it is provided does and often not in the way it should be.<br />
2. IT turnover has the effect of a bullet in the foot - each IT piece that's dislodged causes a domino affect and creates more stress along the fault lines that's always there in the nature of IT work.<br />
3. Finding the right IT person is not unlike finding the next CEO. Uh, ok, that was over-the-top, but here me out... like CEOs, IT people need to be generalists at heart despite their role as technical specialists. The reason they need to be generalists is because they are the natural keepers of how business' are run - understanding end to end business processes, information flows, provider of business infrastructure... Try running a business without a proper working IT function and you'll find out how brain damaged it is - ask anyone who's ever worked in a Chinese company and you'll realize the sheer idiocy and futility they go through.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">I started reading the publication "Fast Company" when my wife brought it home from a business trip 7 or 8 years ago.  She is an executive at Intuit (<em>Quick Books, Turbo Tax, Quicken</em>, etc.) and someone gave her a copy because Intuit was featured in an article that particular month.  "Fast Company" refers to organizations that are agile-- that are quick to adjust to new and ever-shifting market realities.  These places change and thrive and grow and make their employees and customers and communities better.  They are FAST.  Like Intuit. And you have to hustle if you want to stay up with them.  </p>

If you think you want to run your own business, but are not sure you can be a successful Entrepreneur, I am glad you are thinking about it… keep reading. How does an Entrepreneur think, act, and respond? Is your personality a fit for being a successful Entrepreneur? Do you have what it takes?</span></span></p>

As recent as the 80’s we looked on them as un-educated business men involved in shady dealings. There was a general lack of knowledge and information about what makes them successful. </span></span></p>

Our generation and the ones after us expect so much more from our career / work than our parents did. We want money, satisfaction, self expression and flexible hours such as a 4 day work week and tele-commuting. We have more small businesses than ever before in our U.S. history. In addition, smaller businesses are now attracting great employees and competing with the corporate world by offering those employees exactly what they want.<span>  </span></span></span></p>

Some universities now offer courses and degrees in entrepreneurship. Business professionals have vast resources and as a whole we have learned a lot about what it takes to become a successful entrepreneur. I realize there is probably no such thing as the perfect entrepreneurial profile, I have noticed that there are many characteristics that seem to show up repeatedly in my work as a business coach. So from my work with hundreds of entrepreneurs as a coach and trainer, this is my summary. </span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="color:#000000;font-family:Arial;">someone having authority over them. Rules, bureaucracy and politics frustrate them. This is often what leads them to start their own business.<span>  </span>They enjoy creating business strategies and thrive on the process of achieving their goals. Once they obtain a goal, they quickly move to a greater goal. They constantly look to the future vision of the business. They have a compelling drive to do their own thing in their own way. <strong>They value freedom over money</strong>. </span></span></p>

They can work for extended periods of time as needed. They understand the relationship between a healthy body and a sharp mind. </span></span></p>

They may or may not be idealistic, but they are rarely unrealistic. They want to know the facts and condition of a given situation at all times. They may be too trusting (because they are often idealist) and may not be sufficiently skeptical in their business dealings with other people. </span></span></p>

My favorite coaching question for the Entrepreneur is “who can help you with this?” It shakes them up every time.<span>  </span>It is not uncommon for the Entrepreneur to do the books, drive business development and buy the office supplies.</span></span></p>

They have become the bottle neck; their want for control has made it hard for them to hand over authority in the way that a growing business demands. Their strong direct approach makes them more likely to seek information directly from the source, bypassing the structured chains of authority and responsibility. Their interpersonal skills, which were adequate during the start-up phase, will cause them problems as they try to adjust and free themselves from the day to day operations. Cash flow, retention and low morale are symptoms of this issue. </span></span></p>

Many people that I have had the opportunity to work with over the years have told me that having enough money to pay bills and extras is a good incentive but it is not ALL that is necessary to keep them motivated to stay on a job over time. In reviewing research studies that examine job satisfaction, the consensus is employees desire more than just a paycheck to satisfy their needs.</p>
<p>Employee empowerment involves the amount of power and control a person feels they have over their career and creative ideas. According to Foster-Fishman and Keys (1997) an organization’s culture provides the framework to understand a worker's need to be empowered by connecting individual attitudes, organizational practices and employee behaviors to organizational life. In other words, the way a person feels, believes or perceives his or her environment drives their behaviors.</p>
<p>During the years I worked within the corporate world, I developed various documents or was a part of exciting teams in which many talents were pooled together to create projects over several months. In each case, being able to contribute to a goal was important. Every day there was a sense of pride in being valued, respected and empowered to give my talents to a cause. However, depending on the organizational culture, it could be short lived if the boss would constantly criticize without cause or simply delay in responding to important ideas or suggestions offered simply because they were the ‘boss’. Moral would soon sink into the depths of the ocean and soon, I would leave even though the money and benefits may have been good. Katzell and Yankelovick (1975) indicate “workers and work must be matched so as to create a work situation which employees will be seen as capable of meeting their needs and expectations, and where they will have the capabilities to resources to be successful.” (p. *). If this is true, then job satisfaction requires more than fair monetary compensation. Organizations need to create job enriched environments where employees can participate in decision-making efforts on some level, and their creative efforts can be encouraged rather than stifled. These factors can create higher motivation and retention than money alone.</p>

<p>It gets very, very fuzzy when we start to think about the "people" part of the triple bottom line.</p>
<p>When you start considering "People", you start having to examine how behavior impacts a company; how leadership affects the way that change initiatives are received; how old dysfunctions impact a company's ability to work.</p>
