An agreement between a government panel led by Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, N. N. Vohra and a conglomerate of Hindu groups gave exclusive rights to Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board on forest land at Baltal for use during pilgrimage season. According to the agreement, the state government will set aside land at Baltal and Domail comprising 800 kanal for exclusive use by Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board during the Amarnath yatra, while making it clear the land’s proprietary status shall not undergo any change. Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board will now be able to allow the use of the forest land while pilgrimage is on, by various service providers. The period for which the land will be under the board will include the time required for erecting and dismantling the temporary infrastructure for the yatra.

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti said “The move to allow land use disrespects popular sentiments in Kashmir.” The Hurriyat Conference rejected the accord by saying it dosen’t concern Kashmiris who want “azadi”.

No hecklers at the newsstands, no apocalyptic political analysts on local Nigerian TV stations, even the insipid commercial motor cyclist who rode me to work could only offer a slight chuckle at the prospects of President Umar Yar’Adua dead. Now if you are not Nigerian you may have to forgive my morbid humour in trying to figure out the public’s response to the rumoured death of president yar’adua. This is the second time in a little over a year that president Yar’adua has died and we aren’t closer to the truth on the president’s state of health, unlike the former there is no president Olusegun Obasanjo to play hell’s angel and advocate, apologies to he’s asking ‘Umaru’ if he was alive last year when the media had been rife that the president had suddenly taken ill and died. One year on and the media is asking the same question. The president’s spokespersons, official and pseudo have only helped in worsening this fiasco. We know the president went to Saudi Arabia to perform the lesser hajj, ten days on where is he? Why was he not available to open the Nigerian embassy in Brazil according to his detailed official log? How can it all be fine and dandy if the VP Goodluck Jonathan who was supposed to be attending late Zambian leader’s Levi Mwanawasa funeral shelved it?. According to the sun newspapers Goodluck was waiting for some good news from Germany. So dear presidential spokespersons what bad news was being shepherded after all the president told us in a recent interview it was no big deal to be ill, well or die. The president’s media harbingers better be prepared for an oily battle with a vibrant local press, already permutations and diabolical innuendos are rife, e.g. Obasanjo knew all along that this scenario would play out; putting an enervating leader in the saddle and a VP who has never been mentioned as a power broker in the nation’s polity either as governor or VP. The constitution is very clear on what happens if the president passes on; the VP takes over. This however is a difficult prospect to belly. In the run up to the last presidential election there were at least five presidential contenders from the region, at the end we learnt it was easier to step aside than take a hold of the plough, one after the other the entire lot honourably withdrew .Neither Goodluck nor Yar’dua were ever in the equation, leaving us in this quagmire, perhaps OBJ could yet speak to President Yar’adua on our behalf if his media men can’t do the job.

The advance was prompted by encouraging economic data, retreating oil prices, and leadership from the financial sector. The S&P500 was up +1.48% and the Nasdaq +1.22%. Another good day, albeit on light volume.

ETF/CEF Discussion: Although we have a mixed bag here, a couple of new themes are emerging in RSI’s picks.
What is ragging? Ragging is a form of an abuse which is encountered by the newcomers of an education

What is ragging? Ragging is a form of an abuse which is encountered by the newcomers of an educational institution generally in the India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and in many other countries. It is more severe than HAZING which is practiced in west and is similar in nature.

Well in NLIU, the students esp. girls were very fortunate. Our ragging was more of a personality development programme or PDP. It helped us in many ways. One day we were asked to introduce ourselves to the class. It was a nice gesture as it build confidence in public speaking for many of us. We as juniors could interact with any senior irrespective of their batch. They were kind enough to guide us in academics as well as the college activities. The two weeks of PDP were amazing. We had a sense of anxiety for all most everything. Everyone had different perceptions about each other. Some felt homesick, some felt bored, some wanted to get ragged , some were too scared even to get introduced.

But all this ended in a two weeks time. Those seniors which were considered strict turned out be our best mentors. They started helping us in every possible way they could. Well this transformation was also in the form of a celebration.

That day was the most contrasting for the first years. In the morning we had the champo day {fools day}. We were dressed as stupids for the entire day. We had to oil our hair, make a fountain pony tied by a red ribbon, with funny makeup, kurta, pajama, sports shoes etc. It was an exciting day. We were treated as celebrities. Everyone clicked our photographs and treated us in a special way. Everyone laughed at us including the teachers, seniors and we ourselves. It was an unforgettable instance.

The evening was totally different. We had our introduction party which marked the end of so called ragging. We were formally introduced to the college and were treated specially. All the newcomers were given roses. Many students gave splendid performances which included dances, poems, drama and what not. Every one had the choice to put up his or her show. After the formal introduction of every new student, we had jam session which continued for hours. It was our first party and we enjoyed allot with everyone.

Its not the period in which you are ragged matters but the period thereafter which determines your relation equation with everyone.

The “Jammu versus Kashmir” battle, as the TV channels have monikered it, has raised the

The "Jammu versus Kashmir" battle, as the TV channels have monikered it, has raised the very real spectre of another Partition of the country. What started off, or seemed to start off, over the ham-handed dealing of the allotment of land for the Amarnath Shrine Board, has quickly dissolved into a barely disguised slugfest that threatens the very integrity of the Indian Republic.

Suddenly, azadi is not just a word on the lips of separatists in the Valley.

While the Congress' part in creating the mess in the first place has been correctly questioned, the BJP's bellicose role in fanning the flames and bringing things to such a pass has not come for adequate scrutiny. Only Karan Thapar has found it fit to tackle the BJP's methods. On Saturday, it was Rajiv Pratap Rudy. On Sunday, it was Arun Jaitley who got the treatment on Devil's Advocate.

***

Karan Thapar: Let me come to the core issue that you do not want to focus upon and it is this. For the last ten years increasingly, the separatist movement was dying down. This year there was a record turnout of tourists. And yet, what has the BJP-implemented economic blockade in Jammu done? It has inflamed separatist tendencies to the point at which the separatists today are thanking you. Syed Ali Shah Geelani, the most hard-lined Islamist, has publicly said, “I thank the BJP for reviving a movement which was lagging.”

Arun Jaitley:I do not think that we need that compliment or thanks from him. Let me make it clear. We are only supporting the demand of the Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti in Jammu and the demand precisely is this. You have lakhs of tourists going, the shrine board has a duty under law to maintain pilgrim facilities.

The shrine board has legitimately been transferred some land which is to be used during the yatra. And if the Government of India starts to come under pressure from the separatists then it will not have legitimacy.

Thapar: It's not the fact that you supported the Amarnath demand that I question, it’s the manner in which you did it and the consequences of your support. You have cut off the Valley; you have generated a feeling amongst the people of Kashmir that they do not belong.

As a result you have inspired in them a desire for azadi and secession. Movements were latent have now revived, Suddenly, you have the whole valley, in voice shouting, ‘jeeye jeeye Pakistan, Bharat teri maut ayee! (Long live Pakistan; India, you are dead.). And your blockade is solely responsible for it.

Jaitley: Well I reject this suggestion that you are making in total. Your saying and suggesting that there is a blockade only aids the false propaganda that is spread by the separatists. It is not I alone who reject this. This is supported by what the journalists flown by the Army helicopters have to say.

Thapar: What about those journalists who live there?

Jaitley: Cameras do not lie, people do. And therefore I have seen it on camera that there was no blockade.

Thapar: Cameras have shown hundreds of thousands of Kahmiris waving Pakitani flags, demanding azadi; administration has collapsed. You are the cause.

Jaitley:Cameras have also shown four lakh people holding the national flag and courting arrest in Jammu, peacefully saying that give us this land for pilgrim facility.

Thapar: But could you have not demanded it without a blockade?

Jaitley: There was no blockade. The blockade is a lie perpetuated by the ISI (Pakistan’s intelligence agency) and supported by Hurriyat. And that is why I will request every Indian journalist not to believe the lies spread by these organisation. I would request every Indian journalist to give no credibility to such lies.

Thapar: Except the fact that it is believed by everyone in the Valley that and let me quote something....

Jaitley: It is rebutted by the Army, the district administration and by the state government, the government of India. You have all these words against your word.

Thapar: Except the fact that the information secretary of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) is also among those who are thanking your party. Let me quote to you what he said.

Jaitley: Hurriyat and LeT’s word may carry weight with you. They do not carry weight with me.

Thapar: Unfortunately, they carry weight with the people of the valley.

Jaitley: That is the tragedy. It should not carry weight with the people of the valley, that’s what we are to jointly decide.

Thapar: You are creating a situation where it increasingly does. You are not undermining the influence, you are adding to it.

Jaitley: We are only creating a situation where people in the Valley should not raise a demand that is separatist in character and the government of India should not cow down to a demand that is separatist in nature.

Thapar: But look at the way that you have inflamed separatist sentiments. This is what the information secretary of the LeT has been saying. He says, ‘The BJP suits us. LeT is getting a good response due to the BJP’s sentiments.’ Then he says, ‘We pray to God they come to power again. Then we will emerge even stronger.’ What Pakistan failed to do in sixty years, you have done it in six weeks.

Jaitley:We have been in power at the centre for six years. We initiated the peace process, and moved Kashmir in the direction of peace.

Thapar: And now you are moving it all the way towards Pakistan.

Jaitley: I am sorry, we are not doing that. All we are saying is that if separatists raise a demand; do not allow the aspirations of the nationalists to be cowed down.

Thapar: Without thinking and just because you have the best interests of your party in mind, you are once again pushing Jammu into a divide with the Valley....

Today was also my first day of PDP training; I forget what PDP stands for but its basically a workshop from 9-3 for a couple days this week where me & a group of 9 other students learn how to teach Rhetoric. They gave out a book called a long way gone: memoirs of a boy soldier by Ishmael Beah. Every freshmen student gets a copy as apart of one of those generic give-the-students-a-common-ground policies; I can not, as a poet, and thus literary minority, fail to note that it’s nonfiction. But we’re allowed to use it in our curriculum if we wanna, and I think I just might because it looks like it might be my only chance to teach something that isn’t Henry David Thoreau’s Civil Disobedience or some other overused political nonfiction essay (i.e. total bore).

Probably the most interesting thing I learned is that the English-Philosophy Building (EDP), which is currently still closed due to flood damage, is riot-proof, because in the 1970s the first EDP building was burnt down in a student anti-war protest (que fuerte no? (how motherfucking badass!!!)). This means that the windows that do open (my PDP teacher said not all the windows in the building open due to “climate control”) open on a vertical swivel, and they don’t open very much. This also means that there is a secret 5th floor that the students don’t have access to, so that, I'm guessing, if there's a riot, all the Rhetoric TAs can congregate from above & stage an aerial attack on whatever impeding mutiny that may occur.

Mutiny:

Below are some pictures as a result of a bored walk around Iowa City looking for some kind of grass to sit & read in. The only thing I found was a field, and near the field was a huge sign that read “FIELD CLOSED,” even though it didn’t look like there was anything wrong with it. Later someone told me it was because I was walking towards the downtown area & that if I only walked away from it I might have eventually found one.

I have no idea what this sign is supposed to mean:

On Sunday I also made a huge pot of chili because I’m used to cooking for more people than just myself, and wound up having to freeze most of it:

I also bought A Tomb for Anatole by Stéphane Mallarmé, The Frequencies by Noah Eli Gordon, and The Outernationale by Peter Gizzi, which I started reading first because I’m taking a class with him & I wanted to read more than just a handful of poems I had found online. I’m really digging the texture of Gizzi in this book, his obsession with breath and awareness, what serious poems he has, and how they have an effect on me. More to come about that book when I finish it.

The current violence in and around Jammu has promoted the two-nation theory. There is a growing tendency there to see not only Kashmiris but all Muslims as recalcitrant anti-nationals — to be taught a lesson by flag-waving nationalists. In the valley too, the highway blockade has sharpened the perception that Kashmiris/Muslims are persecuted in Hindu-dominated India (the valley press uses words like ‘fanatic’ and ‘extremists’ to describe Jammu agitators). Further, it has not only resuscitated secessionism but also boosted Islamism — by buttressing the Utopian construct already budding in public discourse that Kashmiri means Muslim and, since Islam is pristine, social, political and moral imperfections must stem from flawed religious practice, for which the blame lies with Indian “occupation.” That increasingly used term is, of course, calculated to club Kashmir with Palestine, and an economic blockade adds grist to that mill.

While almost everyone with a decent mind has expressed their opinion on the Amarnath Shrine Board land transfer issue and the ensuing crisis in J&K, most of the people do not yet realise that this is not an issue related to religion at all. This is an issue related to nationalism, religionism is purely incidental.

To sample, (Link)

Mehbooba's speech was no less high-pitched as she said the blockade resulting from the Jammu stir could result in the Valley "looking to the road to Muzzaffarabad (PoK)".

(Do not blame me, but Mehbooba and high pitches reminded me of Himesh Reshammiya).

while Farooq Abdullah comes up with

Striking a dramatic note, Abdullah said he would have to visit his father Sheikh Abdullah's grave and ask whether staying on in India after Partition had been the right decision. "A time has come when I could require a visa to visit Jammu," he said.

Note that the word Hindu or Muslim doesn't occur anywhere, it is only India and Pakistan.

On that note, a long-overdue must-read article by TOI : Reclaiming India

Well today marked my last class in PDP and my Undergraduate experience. It's been a long six years and I am more than relieved to be done. Not because I didn't like school - I loved school. Learning is a fantastic experience. I could take courses forever if it weren't for the pressure of having tests and handing in assignments on a deadline. I think my experience with anxiety over tests and assingments will be an important feeling to remember as I teach my own students.

Maybe that's why I am encouraged by the direction that Education Technology can take us based on what we experienced and watched (the Edutopia videos) in class - that teaching and learning can become more student and problem centred rather than teacher centred. If students can take more of a role in their own learning, maybe that could reduce their anxiety levels and increase their motivation.

What I do know is that this journey is not over just because I am finished this class. Instead it is just:

To be continued...

After the first couple of weeks I thought why not share it all. Please note my observations may have already been made before by commuters but I am new and wide eyed to this whole experience.

May I first say the placement is going great and every body at the museum of London has been good and helpful, giving me briefs and responding to my work! I think it does confirm what I want to do when I grow up though. I don’t want to be the tech guy who sits in the corner or the freelancer that sits in the corner of his own house or office. As I am in the marketing office I think it has opened my mind to marketing and the job opportunities in interactive marketing. Whether that be marketing interactive products like games, or it be organising interactive marketing for whom ever.

Onwards with the rest of my observations.

Commuting after the first couple of days of getting on the wrong trains and connections the excitement obviously wars of so you have to make your own excitement….

Introducing Vic’s daily commuting social experiments

The first social experiment I tried was the smile challenge.

I noticed how grumpy and grey everybody was on the tube so I deeded to cheer them up, if not only to stop them bringing my normal cheery demeanour down.

How?

Well I thought if I looked happy then maybe an other person would look at me and think “oh I thought I had to be grumpy on the train…. Well this is the day that that changes” and smile or grin or at least not frown.

They didn’t, I just got funny looks which made me laugh inside and there for smile more. I think this experiment would work if a group of 5 commuters got on the train and all smiled as individuals, power in numbers and all. I think then people are such sheep on the tube, with their white earphones in, so would follow suite and all start smiling, hi5ing and perhaps breaking into song.

I’m not sure if this experiment worked. I did not get people smiling but I did cheer myself up no end so I think its: Vic = 1 the London underground =1

Today in the market, Monday July 21, 2008: The stock market gyrated between positive and negative territory before ending slightly down. The S&P was off -0.05% and the Nasdaq ended down -0.14%. Oil and materials were up today on hurricane fears and that caused some profit taking after a good last week.

Even as the PDP

[An edited, shorter version of this interview appeared in Sakaal Times on 7 July.]

Even as the PDP tries to occupy the moral high-ground in the aftermath of a successful azadi-inclined agitation against the transfer of land to the Shrine Board, its President Mehbooba Mufti admits in an interview with Shivam Vij that the party has suffered a jolt.

Do you accept that the PDP has suffered a political jolt in the current controversy?
In politics you have to be prepared for ups and downs. This has definitely been a jolt. People had high expectations from us and we did achieve in restoring the credibility of mainstream parties. People had started looking at mainstream parties as not being untouchable anymore. Ghulam Nabi Azad’s parting gift to the outgoing Governor has affected that.

You blame Azad but the PDP forest minister and Deputy CM were responsible for the passage of the order.
But the Chief Minister is the head of the government. Certain policies were dear to Governor Sinha and he had the habit of getting his way through. He is now accusing my father [former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed] of being separatist and communal. He forgets that it was my father who had made land available to the Vaishnu Devi shrine board.

But the Congress says that the file was thrice approved by Baig which is Deputy CM as well as law minister.
That was only about whether the Supreme Court order on transfer of forest land applies to the state. But yes our ministers did make mistakes by being persuaded. Ghulam Nabi Azad was very close to the Governor and it seemed that he had to do him a favour. He has today even admitted that he would send reports about the PDP to New Delhi.

But ultimately a cabinet has collective responsibility…
Yes, and that’s why we have punished ourselves. Haven’t we, by sacrificing from the cabinet. It was only after we withdrew, and because of the resulting political pressure, that the order was revoked. Yes, people are angry with us, but you can be angry only with someone who is your own and there can always be a meeting ground.

You have called the Governor communal.
Just go to the Raj Bhavan and see how he has turned it into a temple with gods and goddesses all over the place. And tell me, in Tirupati or other such places, which state government has transferred hundreds of acres of forest land to temple boards?

Whose brainchild was the shrine board?
The law to establish the shrine board was enacted when the National Conference in Srinagar was a partner of the BJP in Delhi. The two parties were obviously in partnership and this was part of their give and take. Governor Sinha was sent here when my father was the chief minister so that he could take this kind of agenda forward and my father resisted a lot.

So your father and Governor Sinha didn’t have good relations.
Oh the relations were very bad. As soon as Governor Sinha arrived he started holding district level meetings and was very aggressive about the shrine board. He started asking officials to brief him directly and bring him files. He’s not supposed to do that.

Do you think the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board should be dissolved?
I think its purpose should be confined to rituals. And there should be a CBI enquiry into its finances as also those of the vaishnu Devi Shrine Board. I have heard many allegations that the Governor had turned the two boards into money making machine and they don’t even publish accounts. There were protests in Katra two years ago. They are charging huge fees from punywalas and labourers. We want to know if somebody got commissions from langars and chopper companies. People here want to know if Governor Sinha went back a rich man.

The NC is being said to be the one which is going to benefit, but more than the BJP in Jammu and even nationally.
The BJP thrives on communalism and that is what they are doing. But as far as the NC is concerned I am sure people will look at our performance between 2002 and 2005.

It is being said that the popularity of the agitation will affect voters’ participation in the assembly polls in November.
We are apprehensive that the boycott call may work to some degree in towns and cities. These events have been the biggest setback to the democratic process the PDP had started. The turnout in municipal elections was as high as 90% in some places and even in by-elections we saw 70% voting. When my father took over in 2002 he purused the ‘healing touch’ policy that was gaining success but Ghulam Nabi Azad undid all that. What we saw on the streets for nine days against the transfer of land to the shrine board, was giving vent to pent-up anger about many other things.

What were the achievements of three years of PDP rule?
When we took over there was a sense of great insecurity on the streets. The issue wasn’t jobs or development but whether one would be back home at the end of the day. We also tried to move Delhi towards reconciliation between India and Pakistan so that the Kashmir issue could be solved. Our healing touch policy was showing success and the space for violence started shrinking. We also made sure we were fair to Ladakh and Jammu regions, you can ask the people there.

But demilitarization didn’t happen, and isn’t security in the hands of Delhi anyway?
Well we did persuade Delhi to withdraw troops from schools and administrative buildings. Can you imagine a BJP prime minister (Atal Bihari Vajpayee), despite having an alliance partnership with the National Conference, praised us? Can you imagine he was able to address a crowd of thousands in Srinagar without worrying about security? People came to listen to Sonia Gandhi despite an encounter going on in the city. That is what we changed. In November 2004 the prime Minister announced that Delhi found a sea change and was considering withdrawal of troops. But when Azad took over he started opposing withdrawal. Our tenure saw the opening of the Muzaffarabad road [for a bus service]. He did not pursue anything in the direction we had given. We had given Kashmiris the feeling that they were moving forward politically. We managed to bridge the gap between Kashmiris and New Delhi.

So what according to you were Azad’s achievements?
Well he harps on development and reducing corruption but if you talk to common people they will tell you we did more on that front.

The Jammu & Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society has documented that during the PDP years there were 127 custodial killings and 173 disappearances, whereas during the Congress tenure there were 56 custodial killings and 104 disappearances. This could no doubt be because of decline in militancy but it still shows the PDP in a bad light.
I personally went to the house of each and every family whose members had disappeared or killed in custody or a fake encounter, so I know that these figures are not right. We were able to impress upon Delhi that fake encounters were happening for money and promotions.

The azadi sentiment remains strong and has only received a fillip with the anti-land transfer agitation. As a Kashmiri, as an observer, and not as a PDP leader, what do you think is the way forward?
We can find a way out, we had started bridinging gap between Kashmiris and Delhi…

But a substantial number of people want azadi, they don’t want to bridge the gap with Delhi.
The Prime Minister and General Musharaff had declared that boundaries can’t be changed. So we suggested the setting up of a regional council. Representatives from both Kashmirs could be me members. This could also function as the joint mechanism between India and Pakistan. So we have given a roadmap.

But Delhi seems to be happy with the decline of militancy and seems to be suggesting the problem is over.
Unfortunately my father is now being projected as a separatist, but he had warned Delhi: don’t take this normalcy for granted. But Ghulam Nabi Azad changed the tune to say that these azadi slogans were hollow, self-rule was meaningless. He thought his hollow slogan of development could answer everything.

So what should be done now?
The alienation of people can be addressed be pro-people policies to some extrent. But you also need a roadmap to solve the Kashmir problem. This has to take into account three things. Firstly, regional balance between Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. Secondly, the gap between Delhi and Kashmir. And thirdly, the Pakistan factor. All three of these things are equally important.

This is a copy of letter sent by Mr.Gurunath prakash to panun kashmir youth front:

Namaskar,
"Viparetha kale, Viparetha buddhi" . Mahabharatam war was started for a mere piece of land. History repeats.....

The issue of "Land for Amarnath Yatra's Yatris" has been used by Muslim separatist forces as a referendum for a separate Kashmir. All the Kashmiri Political parties in turn who represent the people of Kashmir have made a statement that they are on the verge of attaining their own Country or they have one.

PDP, NC, Congress and ISI have been smart but the smartest is Omar Abdullah, who has used the words Kashmir and Jammu for Muslims and Hindus. That has a lot of significance.

If land is allotted, it will hurt the Kashmiri pride and Kashmiriat! Where is Omar from? From the Womb of an English Nurse! Where did the Kashmiriat go then? Most of the Hurriayat leaders(they must be eliminated) have American or European wifes interestingly! Wonder, if one has to separate from their husbands or divorce or be a Widow like Indira, Sonia and Mahabooba to be in power!!

Is Land to Amarnathji a big deal? Oh! Yeah, its a big deal. So, says most Kashmiri leaders.

Commies have no reaction. Regional Parties are non committal and are worried about their votes . People who made it a huge cry on Raj Thackeray are silent on this very important issue.

BJP is making feeble noises and all the "peace time torch bearers of Hindu and Peace " are silent. Whatever protests one has seen in Jammu, by the Hindus are spontaneous, its all local leadership. It is sad that Hindu movement has become leadership less and has no Central command.

Can you beat it, we are funding all those Kashmiri leaders to bash us(Hindus) at will? Their tourism money is from Hindu pockets? Where does all the money from Amarnath Yatra go?

On an average, Rs 45,000 INR is doled out to each family in Kashmiri Muslim from the Center. Now, what do the Kashmiri Pundits gets???? Nothing, in fact they are looted, forced into prostitution, gang raped, left to beg , as one KP has put it, "Wish I was born as a dog"!! All that they got was tears, heart attacks and loads of humiliation. Why this indifference?? At the time of partition, all the Hindus mostly Punjabis were welcome , land grants, business grants, home grants etc were doled out!!( at that time, there was humanity, Nationalism ). But for KP , there is nothing even after close to 20 years. They are simply put up in different places, marrying or live-in with every and sundry to make two ends meet!! Girls were kidnapped from Camps and were never seen again! Their sin, they are born Hindus and the Hindu leadership is spineless, Gutless and is too self centered around themselves and people of their own ilk.

Infact, almost all the KP's born after 1989 have a problem in voting. Where will all the votes go?? Where will all the 450, 000 votes go?? Where will all the Kashmiri Hindu votes go??

All the Kashmiri Hindus got is NOTHING. Nothing from Congress, Nothing from BJP and now, their land is permanently taken away from them for free!!

Ladies and Gentlemen, THIS IS HISTORY IN MAKING! I used to wonder how come everyone looted India, how come Babur's men build a Mosque on our Ram lala's Mandir? IT WAS LIKE THIS!!!

How come 15 % of Hindus in Pakistan and 30% in Bangladesh vanish, it is LIKE THIS!!!

How come Andhra Pradesh is rapidly becoming Christian? it is LIKE THIS! ALL OF US ARE WITNESSING HISTORY IN MAKING.

Don't blame the people, its the leaders. We simply do not have leaders of caliber, who can impress the common Hindu to take up the issues. A leader who can win the trust of Hindus.

I smell similar circumstances as in 1857! Revolt from the Common man is imminent.

And, I will not be a mute or a mere spectator.

Gurunath Prakash

Jangan sampai salah menentukan sikap. Salam... ^_^

[An edited version of this article by me appeared in Sakaal Times on 8 July.]
New Delhi, 7 July: On

[An edited version of this article by me appeared in Sakaal Times on 8 July.]

New Delhi, 7 July: On Thursday, 4 July, the Congress' social welfare minister Abdul Gani Wakil showed this reporter the list of MLAs in the J&K assembly, claiming that even the lone BJP MLA would abstain in order to save the Ghulam nabi Azad government. Since 28 June, when the PDP withdrew support, the Congress always insisted that it had the numbers. On allegations of horse-trading by the PDP, Wakil had said, "We have asked all MLAs to vote from their conscience."

So what went wrong? The Congress was banking mainly on a rebel group of PDP MLAs who were unhappy with PDP President Mehbooba Mufti's decision to withdraw support. This rebel group, sources say, was led by Deputy CM and law minister Muzaffar Husain Baig, who wanted to stay on with the government and clear the air about his own role in allowing the land tranfer to the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board.

Of the PDP's 18 MLAs, one, Ghulam Hasan Mir, had been suspended from the party in connection with the sex scandal. Mir, who has formed his own party and was supporting Azad's government, told Sakaal Times, "Azad could have proved majority this morning as several MLAs from the PDP and even the NC were planning to vote for the government against their party whips." The anti-defection law, passed in J&K by Azad, was also taken care of: Mir said that 5 PDP MLAs were ready to go against their party whip. "But Azad chose to resign honourably as it would not have looked good in a democracy," said Mir.

However, other rumours had it that this rebel group backed out at the last moment.

Today I've been thinking about Personal Development Planning (PDP) and Personalised Learning. This is ok as I'm paid to think about these things. I'm thinking through the implications of putting PDP and personalised learning at the heart of HE for the way universities are organised.

Everything we do now is structured around the University and the staff. Courses are made up of levels and units. We decide what comes first, what builds on what and the chunks of learning with their expected learning outcomes. Students start at the beginning, proceed through this structure from unit to unit and level to level with us assessing them in predetermined ways and at predetermined points until we decide they're fit to be unleashed on the world as graduates. This must be an over-simplification of what's needed by individual students. Different students find different things more or less difficult - levels are somewhat arbitrary. Some themes build on an assumption of previously covered concepts but it's not an exact science.

So, we're now saying that students should be able to personalise their learning and that we'll do this by putting PDP at the core of the students learning. We'll facilitate this process through ePDP and ePortfolio. None of our existing frameworks seem to suit this particularly well. Perhaps we should make the ePDP process the scaffolding around which students can build their learning, accessing learning activities as necessary to move them on towards their final award.

To do this properly would require a ground-up re-engineering of the university and that's not going to happen but we should look at ways of putting students identified learning needs at the heart of the process and then building the teaching around that. Learning activities could be technologically packaged up in a more fine-grained way without the arbitrary unit boundaries. Students can then share their progress through their portfolios and lecturers can give feedback, signpost the next appropriate learning activities and manage the assessment process.

Could Universities really change this much?
