I just found this package through some random surfing. It's called Phun and it's a simple graphical world builder with a real physics engine underneath. There is a decent online tutorial and a pretty decent online community to share ideas and solve problems. The download is only 2.8MB, it loads up fast and easy.

Phun can be found here: http://www.phunland.com/wiki/Home

The software was created by Emil Ernerfeldt as part of his masters thesis at Umea University. He calls it a 2D Physics Sandbox and I can see why. You want to take yours shoes off and just play in it all day. Since its creation, Emil has gone to work for a software company where he continues to develop Phun.

Phun is free for an individual to use, but not free for commercial use. Emil made it clear, however, that Phun is free for educational use. I plan to install in on the computers in my classroom and give assignments and perhaps extra credit for designs that demonstrate the principals we are working on in class. There is no reason why my students can't install the software at home and bring in their creations.

O nome do jogo é Crayon Physics.

Pra baixar:

Unfortunately the video below is rather poor quality, due to youtube's encoding - click here to see it in higher quality.

Why?
My physics teacher recently broke his wrist/arm/something, and as there are only a few physics lessons left before the summer holidays (at time of writing: 2) we won't be getting another teacher. Instead we were set work to 'investigate the forces on a 70kg person on a fairground ride' - a poor attempt at compensating for the theme-park trip missed as a result of the broken bone (he was going to drive us). This led me and friends to have a play with phun, to produce some fairground-ish rides, of which the 'Big Dropper' was the most successful.

The video was recorded using RecordMyDesktop after having tried several other programs which failed to do the job - xvidcap and glc both failed to record a decent video. RecordMyDesktop produced an Ogg Theora format video which I then uploaded straight to youtube.

Everyone's had one. Some people have two or more if they are famous. I had one and it freaked me out for a long time. I bought my first cell phone because of it.

Stalkers. Creepy, weird, and generally socially inept with a bit of malfunctioning chemical hard-wire.

After I graduated from high school, I moved to the nearest city and lived and worked for a year before deciding to go to university (something I highly suggest if you are broke and really don't know what you want to do with your life).

The day after I moved to the city, I started my new job, working in a pharmacy, in the back where the action happens: the drug dispensary.

I have maaaannny stories about working in pharmacies (I worked as a Tech for 5 years), some funny (I took a call once, where the guy on the other end told me seriously without laughing, that his penis was too big for even the Magnum sized connies and what should he do - I was laughing too hard and had t pass it to the pharmacist), gross ("Pharmacist, I haven't taken a dump in a week, what can I take?), NSFW gross ("Um, so I have this strange fluid leaking from my anus..." - I'm not even kidding people, if you want to go into pharmacy, have an iron stomach because people come in there as if they are talking to their doctor, no one hides anything). There was also the d-bag who would hit on me everytime he came in to fill his Valtrex (herpes medicine) as if I didn't know what it was for. Ew. Ew. No.

But there is only one creepy story.

About two months after I was hired, I got a strange call at work.

"Hello", I answered.

"Um, hi, you don't know me, but I know you [I swear to god, he said this]. I have been watching you" [ack, creep alert!], he told me.

"Who is this? Tom if this is you, I swear to Lucifer, I will melt down your motherboard when I get home!" I spat into the phone. (At the time, I was living with 3 guys, one of whom was my boyfriend at the time. Yeah, I know how crazy this sounds. They were messy and dirty, but that's another post).

"Oh, uh, no, no, you have never seen me in person, I come in to fill my prescription and I have seen you a couple times and you look like an angel. I was wondering if you were interested in being my friend?"

"Uhhhh, that's not a good idea, I am flattered but, uhhhhhhh, I have to go." And I quickly made "busy" noises (slamming things, tapping on the computer keys) before hurriedly hanging up the phone. [SHUDDER]

I was thoroughly freaked out by the fact that he had been watching me, looking, staring, observing from afar, yet I didn't know what he looked like, except that he had the stalker-talk down to a movie script finesse. 'You don't know me, but I know you' and 'I've been watching you' - dear.god

I told my boss and my co-workers about it and they told me not to walk home alone (which I did because I lived close by), and to think about getting a cellphone (which I did not, until my mom threatened my life until I bought one so she could talk to me every night for a month while I walked home after work).

It didn`t end there.

No, he called the next day, and the next, until after losing sleep for a couple nights, I got on the phone and told him that no, I didn`t want to be friends, that his whole approach had made me uneasy and that should he call me again, I would contact the police and set about getting a restraining order.

He quietly said that he understood, which made me feel really guilty, but at the same time, I felt scared and stressed out, and no friendship or relationship should ever be founded on either of those things. So he left me alone and the calls stopped, though to this day, I never found out what he looked like, never met him in person, and completely forgot all about him.

Until the scary Tylenol 3 addict who forged doctors prescriptions, showed up and refused to leave the store, making my stalker seem friendly and harmless in comparison. Stay tuned for more pharmacy phun.

Current (visual) mood of how I feel internally. I want to write, but I am super exhausted, yet super happy and at peace (liek teh kittah). The reason? Children's church tonight. If you ever serve in any ministry, I say consider Children's ministry; it'll change your life! Sure, the kids and activities can drain the energy right out of you, but once you see the work God does in the live's of His children, you will give yourself to exhaustion willingly! There's nothing more heart- (warming, changing, captivating, ________, ) than seeing the joy and hope in the eyes of children that look forward to being in God's house and being themselves while discovering who God has called them to be. They're not likely to say this directly, but like I said, you see it in their eyes, feel it in their spirit, hear it in their inflection,... you just know. And to top all that off, it is just plain F-U-N !!! (or as Pastor Sarah would say, "PHUN"). But don't take my word for it, come see for yourself! You'll be amazed!

Just a quickie for all y'all who missed the raucous pho night on Sun! We had a blast!!! Nathan Malone has moved beyond a pho apprentice into the Master realm for ingesting a durian boba - ask him, that's all I'm saying. The delightful Allan Pan graced us with his presence, & humor, the delightful Gallant couple was truly gallant, Chelps drove in early from Kansas to make the evening (pho or kansas? that's a toughie), Justyn Regan was mighty in wit, Zach Hilbrich was as clever as always and the color of Bryan Kinney's pho matched his hair (kind of orangish red). Anyways, if you missed having phun with us, then make it a priority to be there the next time. I'll give you plenty of warning!

We had a blast & the only way it could have been more phun is if you had been there. :) Now while pho may not be your bowl of noodles / cup of tea, its all about the people - so just come & have an iced coffee, salty lemonade, or whatever & enjoy the comphany! Its wonderphul! ;)

Are you having Phun Yet?

In my last Post I mentioned the incredible physics sand box or physics reality simulator Phun . Here I will explain in some detail one scene created with Phun.
When you build physical simulations in Phun you are creating a visual representation that is attached virtually near physical behavior. In a way you are actually building graphically a very sophisticated computer program where each element have physical properties. Like being able to move, collide, bounce, gravity, velocity, acceleration etc. Naturally the simulation is no perfect but is very close to reality and that is what makes it very surprising and I believe useful. It's almost like using Lego blocks but this time you can build the building blocks by yourself!

I will name the process of building scenes "Phun programming" for the above reason and by extension a Phun programmer is he who creates a scene.

While many of the Phun programmers restrict them self to creating rockets and tanks some others have dedicated their time to create ingeniously intricate mechanism. I am still in complete awe by some of the mechanical things that people have created with Phun. Between those prolific creators I have found Livio Zucca from Turin Italy the home of world fame mathematician Giuseppe Peano. I believe Livio's creations deserve more attention for his ingenuity.

In my prior post about the Pascal triangle with Phun I extended a prior idea from Livio. The machine in question is a binary mechanical counter.

The main component to perform computations in this particular device is what is know as a latch and it should not be confused with a flip-flop. The main difference between latch and flip-flop is that latches are transparent storage elements while flip-flops are not. Wikipedia point out this new distinction.

In the above picture you can see a magnified section of the machine. This we called the ball feeding mechanism and it's function is to collect balls and feed them up the two dimensional vertical tube on the left.

Let us explained in a bit of detail how this is achieve with Phun.

In Phun you can simulate gravity and can also simulate movement. You can define two types of hinges. The normal kind that is just a hinge that hinges and there is the one that can act as an engine or motor. This is just a programmatic simplification on Phun's designer part. It will be nice if there was some visual differentiation between them but at the moment there is none.

The crosses are used to attached things so they will not fall off the scene when gravity acts upon them.
Notice the green bar at the bottom of the picture. That bar acts as the collector of balls and it does have a very slight inclination this is useful in this design as it makes the balls roll slowly towards the left where the feeding mechanism is located.

You can also see a spring and I guess you must probably already know what a spring does!

and at last the actual latch

The latch acts like a balance and there is a hinge that can be visible if you magnify the picture a little bit more. The numbers have a double function in this particular case. They act as stoppers for the balancer and also as indicators of the state of the latch. As portrait above this latch is in 0 state.

As you probably know latches have two states. One can be use to represent 0 state as in this case and the other can be use to represent 1.

The latch alternates between this two states as you can see in the animation below.
You may also appreciate the mechanism for translating circular motion into linear upward motion on the left side. This mechanism brings back memories of the mechanism that provided steam locomotive with motive power in time past.

As you may have already guess by the picture of the machine and the name the function of this particular mechanism is to count balls dropping down from the device and this is done using the binary numerical system. The binary system is a numerical positional system that uses only two digits instead of the 10 digits we use in our decimal numerical system.

For educators Phun will be a source of inspiration. I believe it is very useful for the instruction and motivation of Mathematics,Physics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering,Electronics. Phun is opening a new universe of interactive learning and should I dare also say FUN!

If you like to play, run or modify the Scene above in the Phun simulator you can download the Phun program and the scene from

Allgemeine Angaben:

Name: Phun - the 2D physics sandbox
Hersteller / Vertrieb: Emil Ernerfeldt / VRLab, Umeå University, Sweden
Website: http://www.phun.at/
Getestete Version: 3.5 beta
Typ: Simulation

Was haltet ihr davon?

Phun is out for OSX! Okay, it came out a few weeks ago, but I just got around to downloading it. Phun is a 2-D Physics sandbox.

At this time, I have no idea how I'll use this in class, but I have a new prep to plan for next year and a summer that is mostly unplanned.

3D

Via information aesthetics I ran across Tag Galaxy, a 3-D1 representation of photos on flickr by tag. Each planet represents photos of related tags. Of course I had to see what the math tag looked like:

I had planned to post the screen shot of the "planet" of photos. However, the first photo I checked was not licensed under a Creative Commons License. So, be careful.2

4D

I've got nothing, sorry. Although I do keep bugging a friend to work on a time machine. Alas, he hasn't come through yet.3

1Obviously it is really two dimensional. Also, I think it is more of a planetary system than a galaxy.
2In a strange coincidence, the first photo I checked for CC belonged to Courtney.
3I know, I know. He hasn't built a tesseract either.
