SINOPSIS

The Macedonian-language primer entitled Abecedar, which was published in Athens in 1925 as a result of recognition of Macedonian ethnic minority after the World War I.

The Abecedar, featuring the letters of the Macedonian language spoken in the Aegean part of Macedonia, was printed in Latin alphabet as Greek authorities wanted to make a distinction between the Macedonian, Serbian and Bulgarian language.

In 1920 the League of Nations initiated the signing of treaties relating to the protection of the minorities in a number of European countries, which specified the obligations of the states with regard to providing such minorities with civil and political equality. On August 10, 1920 such a treaty for the protection of the non-Greek ethnic minorities in Greece was signed between the Great Powers and Greece; it was named the Treaty of Sevres. The Treaty of Sevres guaranteed that minorities in Greece free use of their mother tongue in their personal and official relations.

The Abecedar never reached the Macedonian children, it was only used as proof by the Greek government towards the Great Powers that they had fulfilled their obligation set in the Treaty of Sevres, most books were later burned.

Keyboard Topography

There are four concepts about the piano keyboard that must be thoroughly understood in the pre-music reading stage: black key groups, high/low on the piano, up/down on the piano, and above/below.

It is not enough that students simply be introduced to these concepts via verbal explanation by the teacher.  Educationally sound pre-reading materials must show visual pictures of the concepts.  And most importantly, the materials must be designed to help students physically practice these concepts at home.  For example, they can play all the groups of two black keys going up and down.  This simple task teaches students all four keyboard topographical skills- black key groups, high/low, up/down, above/below.  Students should also play all the groups of three black keys going up and down.

Students must be given the opportunity to practice these concepts daily at home.  Simply playing them one time at the lesson is not enough for true mastery.

Physical Technique

Right from the very first lesson, students should be taught to play with curved finger tips.  Also, they must learn correct posture, relaxed shoulders and arms, level wrists, arched hands, and firm finger movement.  Educationally sound pre-reading books will teach these important skills thoroughly with visual pictures and specific tasks for daily at-home practicing.

Right/Left Hands and Finger Numbers

These concepts must not only be introduced but practiced and mastered.  Does the pre-reading book you use give students specific daily practice assignments in order to practice and master these simple but crucial concepts?  Or does it merely introduce these concepts along with five or more other new concepts?

Music Alphabet

The music alphabet is so simple, and yet so important that it needs to be taught separately from any other concept or skill.  That way, mastery and long term memory are assured.

Names of White Keys

I wish I had a dollar for every time a transfer student came to me after several months of lessons with another teacher, but did not know the names of the white keys!  These students are either in the middle of or have completed a "primer" level book in one of the popular piano methods.  Yet they do not know the names of the white keys!  How could this be?

There are two reasons for this inexcusable situation:

1. Today's popular method books do a very poor job of teaching students the names of the white keys.
2. Many teachers do not test for mastery!  Instead, they assume students know something after it was introduced only once. 

Rhythm Notation

Simple rhythm notation reading should be taught and mastered before students begin to read pitch notation on the staff.  It is so much easier for students to learn to read notes on the staff if they have already mastered the reading of rhythm notation!

Rhythm notation and pitch notation are completely separate skills and concepts and should therefore be taught separately.  Rhythm notation is much less complex and therefore easier to learn than pitch notation, so it should be taught first.

It is educationally unsound to teach rhythm notation and pitch notation at the same time.   Students must be given specific rhythm exercises outside the context of songs and outside the context of other concepts and skills.  Isolating rhythm reading assures complete mastery.

Other Important Pre-Reading Skills

Steady beat, playing legato, keeping eyes on the notes, and looking ahead in the music, can all be taught before students learn to read notes on the staff.  Good pre-reading materials will include excellent visual representations of these essential skills as well as opportunities for students to practice them independently of other skills.

One Thing at a Time Please

The Westlund Piano Course is the only method on the market that teaches all the essential pre-reading skills and concepts one at a time.  All other methods, especially the primers, teach many, many concepts and skills at the same time.  I have counted as many as 15 new concepts and skills on a single page of one of the most popular method book primers.

I feel sorry for all those unfortunate beginners out there, having as many as 15 brand new concepts and skills thrown at them in the first lesson!  They can't possibly catch them all... most of the skills and concepts will fall between the cracks.  And some teachers will automatically assume that the student has mastered all the skills and concepts because the student was introduced to them.

Lucky students receiving the Level 1 book  of the Westlund Piano Course (comparable to the "Primer" in other methods) will instead be introduced to only one new concept and skill at a time and be given ample opportunity to practice and master the skill before having a new one added.

Uncluttered Pages

The pages of a student's first book need only contain the text and graphics the student needs.  The pages of the first book especially, should not be cluttered with all sorts of instructional text for the teacher.  This is like giving a 1st grader the Teacher's Edition of a 1st grade textbook.  Today's popular method book primers all look like Teacher's Edition textbooks.  Surely all that extra clutter is confusing to students and therefore diminishes the quality of learning.

Fun and Familiar Songs

Of course, from the student's point of view, all that matters are the songs they play.  A good pre-reading book will have students easily and quickly learning fun, familiar songs right from the first lesson.  No primer on the market does this as effectively as the Level 1 book of the Westlund Piano Course.  I have created a unique pre-music reading format for learning songs that is remarkably easy for students to learn from.

So while students are having a ball learning fun, familiar songs, they are unknowingly also mastering all the essential skills that are prerequisite to learning music staff notation.

Quick summary of the second half of the papering...

This is the back corner of the room where the papered wall will eventually meet the painted wall. As you can see, they both are starting out with a not so stylish, plastic-coated, wood type product, which I understand was quite the rage in the 1970's. Irritatingly enough, I totally forgot to take a good before picture, and only have one from after I moved the possum belly. At that point, it looked even worse than reality, as the possum belly has a very large, flat top and was just barely accessible when the rest of the back corner wasn't. Needless to say, it turned into a nightmare of a clutter catcher, and we will be spending some extended quality time together sooner than later. I'm not in the mood to share that photo at present for some odd reason...

First job - after moving the mounds of stuff from this half of the room back to the half that we worked in last week - was to scuff sand the walls. I only did part of the future painted wall, but thought that it would be positively lovely to have a head start when it's time to finish it. I debating as to whether I should discuss just how much pleasure I took in destroying the paneling...

Next we did what turned out to be the most miserable part of the job. The walls needed washed down. Between the filth of the last 30-35 years and the sanding dust, it turned out to be a lot more than just the quick wipe-over that we'd anticipated. Neither of us was in a particularly cheerful mood after about the first 15 minutes or so... I never thought it could feel so good to slap primer on a wall! You can see in the photo that for some reason, certain panels seemed to bleed right through the primer. I decided it was safer to go back and add a second coat of primer, even though it promised to be stain blocking. Somewhere in the midst of all this, DH caulked all the joints between panels and the ceiling.

Finally, after hours of prep work over what turned into several days (We had two segments to do separately due to needing to move furniture, plus a day long trip to visit a great museum.), we got to the fun part. I'm saying that a bit sarcastically, I fear, as the one day that we had available to hang the paper turned out to be an extremely bad day for me to be doing same. I was exceedingly jumpy inside all day Tuesday and had a miserable time trying to do this sort of a task. Had we had another day available, I'd have called a halt to the proceedings after the first piece of paper hit the wall; it was that bad. Days like that give birth to what I call the "King Mudas Touch." Everything I touched turned to mud. Amazingly enough, I didn't fall off the ladder or dump the bucket of water, but past that, I think about everything that could have gone wrong did, and I was extremely grateful to have such a good apprentice. She painstakingly fixed my problem spots when I knew I'd best just step away from them, then worked most all of the last piece into place, complete with the extra long, all the way down the corner of the wall cut.

And despite every attempt it made to be otherwise, not only is all the paper still on the wall 24 hours later, it actually looks very good! Again, it's only an interim stage, but I'm so excited to see so much less paneling in here! I also want to add that I'm really glad I chose not to put liner up on the paneled wall behind the paper. I might have made a different choice had I been using a different paper (such as a small, all-over print), but since this is a good quality paper, has some embossed texture, and is striped, the light indentation over some of the grooves just really isn't noticeable. The person who might actually see them is going to have a lot of other things that are much more obvious to criticize, I'm sure!

Long ago, back when the Land of the Free was still pretty young and had that "new country" smell, Thomas Jefferson exhorted those who would keep the whole crazy "America" train rolling to “educate and inform the whole mass of the people... They are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty.”

Poetically spoken words, and as true today as they were then - not only for our country, but for the myriad groups composing its citizenry. As a member of several groups - American, Hispanic, Liberal, Transgender, People Who Realize White Castle Is Kind Of Gross But Keep Eating There Because It's Good, Damn It - I know how important education is to fostering understanding not only between groups but between members within those groups.

All of which brings me to my point: I'm currently compiling, via blog, Claire’s Transgendered Primer for the Curious, Apprehensive or Confused. In it, I hope to provide a (very) basic guide designed to answer questions that non-transgendered people have about us, as well as foster discussion and educate folks about who transgendered people are (hint: we're people who happen to be transgendered, not amorphous clouds of gender variance who have temporarily taken human form. Well, except for me).

I've requested input from my transgendered sisters and brothers regarding the topics they'd like to see addressed, and now, I would ask you, non-trans readers, the following questions:

1) What questions do you most often have for or about transgendered people?

2) Do you have any first-hand experience with a transperson, or are you reliant solely on the media's somewhat less-than-appealing portrayal of who we are?

3) What opinions do you currently have regarding the transgendered (if any)? Do you feel they might be subject to change if you were more thoroughly educated on the subject?

Judging by the reactions this idea has received so far, I'm both apprehensive and excited to see what develops. I would ask that, if you send me an e-mail or post your comments right here on Claire de Lunacy, that you be respectful of others' opinions (which is not to say you can't be a total smartass, just don't descend into the lowlands of Flame Hate, The Hate that Flames) and contribute something genuine to the discussion (again, I must stress that ALL opinions are welcome, regardless of my alignment with them along the idealogical, religious or psychological spectra).

Am I really into this??? Uhmmmm,,, I'd better be!

When I was young, I used to keep a notebook where I scribble my thoughts, release my feelings, my hurts.. including my life's drama and everything under and even over the sun. ;-)

As I grew older, I became lazy... not lazy on studying, working, and working but lazy in "personal" writing. What I meant about "personal" writing is that something about my life, some thoughts in my mind that are not work-related, and things that I wanted to share with someone.

Before, everytime I pick up my pen and started writing, I felt like talking to the air, chatting with the stars during the sleepless nights and most often having a conversation with God. Writing during late nights and early morning is like a fresh air into my lungs and brain.

Now, I haven't even spend a minute writing or should I say "blogging" (as most of the users here do.. of course this is a blogging site... so idiot of me.. hahahahaha...) but since I signed up for this blog site, I just wish I'll be taking even just few minutes of my time in a day to drop by and leave some thoughts not for the readers but for my soul.

Right now, I really can't describe myself because I don't know where and how to start.

I think I am lost. I need some directions. I hope I can get better in blogging along the way.

Little by little... I know I'll be getting used to this thing called blogging.

Los jugadores pronto podrán interactuar con el mundo virtual usando únicamente sus pensamientos y emociones.El neuro auricular Epoc que interpreta la interacción de las neuronas del cerebro saldrá a la venta este año.
Capta la actividad eléctrica del cerebro y envía señales inalámbricas a una computadora“, afirmó Tan Le, presidenta de la firma Emotiv, de propiedad estadounidense y australiana.
“Permite al usuario manipular un juego o entorno virtual de manera natural e intuitiva”, añadió.

El cerebro está formado por unas 100.000 millones de células nerviosas o neuronas, las cuales emiten un impulso eléctrico cuando interactúan. El auricular usa tecnología conocida como electroencefalografía (EEG) no invasiva para captar la actividad neurológica.

Según Le: “Emotiv es una empresa de ingeniería neurológica y hemos creado un interfaz cerebro computadora que lee los impulsos eléctricos del cerebro y los convierte en órdenes que puede aceptar un video juego permitiendo controlar un juego de forma dinámica”.

Los auriculares que captan la actividad neurológica no son nuevos, pero la presidenta de la compañía asegura que el Epoc fue el primer aparato comercial usado para juegos.
“Éste es el primer auricular que no requiere una amplia red de electrodos o un técnico para calibrar o dirigirlo y no requiere poner gel en el cuero cabelludo”, afirmó.

El uso de la electroencefalografía en las prácticas médicas data de hace casi 100 años pero fue sólo en los años 70 cuando el procedimiento fue usado para explorar la interfaz entre el cerebro y la computadora.

Expresiones y emocionesLa tecnología Epoc puede usarse para proporcionar verdaderas expresiones faciales a las expresiones de avatares de jugadores. Así por ejemplo, cuando un jugador sonríe, guiña el ojo o hace una mueca, el auricular detecta la expresión y la transmite al avatar en un juego.

También puede leer las emociones de los jugadores y traducirlas al mundo virtual. “Podría usarse el auricular para mejorar el realismo de las respuestas emocionales de los personajes de inteligencia artificial de los juegos“, dijo Le.

“Si reíste o te sentiste feliz tras matar a un personaje en un juego, tu compañero virtual podría llamarte la atención por ser demasiado cruel“, añadió.

El auricular de US$299 tiene un giroscopio que dirige el movimiento y un dispositivo inalámbrico para comunicarse con un receptor USB conectado a la computadora.
El auricular Emotiv podría detectar más de 30 expresiones, emociones u acciones diferentes.

IBMÉstas incluyen excitación, meditación, tensión y frustración. Las expresiones faciales incluirían sonreír, reír, guiñar el ojo y enojo (frunciendo el ceño). Además de acciones cognitivas como empujar, estirar, levantar, tirar y rotar (en seis ejes distintos).Los jugadores serán capaces de mover objetos en el mundo virtual simplemente pensando en ello.
Emotiv está trabajando con IBM para desarrollar tecnología para “mercados de negocios estratégicos y mundos virtuales”.

Según Paul Ledak, vicepresidente de convergencia digital de IBM, los interfaz cerebro computadora como el auricular Epoc son un componente importante del futuro Internet en tres dimensiones y el futuro de las comunicaciones virtuales.
