PSV Eindhoven may be on familiar ground, but they will be hoping to change the course of recent history when they visit Liverpool FC for the third time in three seasons in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday. The Dutch champions lost twice at Anfield in the 2006/07 campaign, succumbing 2-0 in the group stage and 1-0 in the quarter-finals, and, stung by a 3-0 defeat at home to Club Atlético de Madrid on Matchday 1, they will have something of a point to prove. In contrast, five-time European champions Liverpool kicked off Group D with an impressive 2-1 victory at Olympique de Marseille, but their manager Rafael Benítez is still wary of the threat posed by the visitors. "It will be dangerous for us, but right now I don't think they [PSV] have confidence, or at least that is the report that we have," Benítez said. "I have a lot of respect for them because they are always at the top of the Dutch league."

Chelsea beat Bordeaux 4-0 in their opening match and are big favourites. But Cluj, who have several Portuguese players, caused a major upset with a 2-1 win over Roma in Italy in their first ever Champions League tie. And Chelsea coach Luiz Felipe Scolari is adamant that his side will not take the Romanian champions lightly, insisting: "It would not be a big surprise if a team like Cluj beat a team like Chelsea any more. "Now all teams know all teams, we know Cluj and they know us. There are no small teams in the Champions League anymore and Cluj are in the competition because they have good players. They are Romanian champions and deserve our respect. "We win lots of games because we respect our opposition and we will respect Cluj just the same.

DONETSK, September 30 (Champions League) - Barcelona skipper Carles Puyol believes they can take a "giant step" towards the Champions League knockout stages with a victory over Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday night. Barca started their Group C campaign with a 3-1 home win over Portuguese outfit Sporting Lisbon while Shakhtar also enjoyed a winning start with a 2-1 triumph at Swiss outfit Basel. Another victory for Barca on Wednesday would put the Catalan giants in a position of strength at the top of the standings, and not least because they next face back-to-back matches against group outsiders Basel. "We will go into the game full of desire and I think that if we pick up the three points we will take a giant step towards qualification," said Puyol. Barca go into the match on the back of a four-game winning streak - the team's best run of results in a year - and having seemingly recovered from their slow start to the season. However, Pep Guardiola's side have not managed to keep a clean sheet in their last six matches since beating Wisla Krakow 4-0 in August.

Keane is still to score after 10 games for his new club following the Irishman's £20million move from Tottenham in the summer.

In recent weeks Keane has received strong support from Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt, and now midfielder Mascherano has added his weight to the argument.

He said: "Robbie Keane is a great player, and now he is playing in a different system to what he was used to at Spurs.

"He must get used to the different way that we play, but of course I believe he can have a great partnership with Fernando Torres."

With Gerrard searching for his 100th goal for the club - as Liverpool look for their 100th goal under manager Rafael Benitez in European competition - Mascherano is confident Keane will get off the mark.

He said: "Robbie has scored lots of goals in his career and he will do the same here."

Benitez will have Mascherano back from a calf injury to face the Dutch champions.

The problem now for Benitez is the rampant expectation that sees them expected to beat sides like PSV at Anfield.

It does not help the Anfield coach's plan for calm and concentration when Liverpool have such a good record against Eindhoven.

In 2006-07 on the way to the Athens final against AC Milan, Liverpool met PSV four times in the competition. The sides played out a goalless draw in Holland in the group stages with Liverpool winning the return 2-0.

They then met in the quarter-final with the Reds winning 3-0 in Holland and by a one-goal margin at Anfield.

Benitez said: "PSV are a different side with a different manager and many players since the last time we played them in Europe.

"Yes, we have beaten them at Anfield twice, but that is when things can be dangerous. People expect things to happen.

"The fact that PSV lost their opening group match to Atletico Madrid is also a problem for us. They have to get something here now and they will sit and defend and try to catch us on the counter-attack.

"Now when we are in a good situation, people are really happy, and everybody is expecting to see the team playing well and scoring goals.

"But I think it's more important to be concentrated, to be focused and keep on winning."

Liverpool, unbeaten this season, can all but end PSV's interest in the competition tonight.

But Benitez, who takes charge of his 250th Liverpool game, said: "When you are playing well and winning games, with everyone talking about how good you are, it is important to calm down and get people talking only about the next game.

"It is dangerous when you hear people talking well about your team, then we have to make sure we do not listen to what is being said but just concentrate on the future."

FINLAND PLAYED without Jari Litmanen and scored three times against the second best team in Europe. Whatever else comes from the first game of the World Cup qualification campaign, that should be remembered. Litmanen's fitness has been a dominating theme in the build up to a lot of Finland matches in recent years.

When plans for a statue of Litmanen were discussed in Lahti, wags cruelly suggested that the sculpture should have a glass ankle, so that it could again be broken and remoulded and journalists could fill their word counts by once more guessing the state of Litmanen's leg.

Finland coach Stuart Baxter had attempted to draw a line under such speculation by clearly setting out the criteria Litmanen would have to meet before being selected for the national side.

The jist was that Litmanen would have to be playing regularly for his club side, and it was this stipulation that led the former Ajax striker to sign for his home town club, FC Lahti, for the end of the Finnish season. He missed out on the Germany game through a bout of flu.

Litmanen is a legend, and is welcome in the Finnish squad, but if he is not fit and in-form then the national side has to have another plan. And what a plan they now have, under a coach favouring a more expansive style than the one employed by the often dour Roy Hodgson.

The Finnish midfield was rejuvenated, breaking forward from midfield and playing early balls for strikers Jonatan Johansson and Mikael Forsell to run onto. Mika Väyrynen was particularly impressive, pinging in the second goal and setting up Daniel Sjölund for the third.

Väyrynen's situation encapsulates the lot of the Finnish footballer. He left his home country aged just nineteen, and after a successful four years at Heerenveen he got his big move to Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven.

Injuries at crucial times hampered his career at PSV, and after three years there he has now returned to Heerenveen, where the club's management are less able to replace injured players with big new signings.

Finns are far away from home, if they are successful, and can lack allies when team selection becomes political. For instance Sami Hyypiä, omitted from Liverpool's Champions League squad because of UEFA's new quota system for home-grown players, is at a clear disadvantage because he is not playing in his home country.

Swedish players have this option at a much earlier stage than Finns, and often take advantage of it. Henrik larsson moved from Barcelona to Helsingborg, and has since played two full seasons there as well as playing for the national side, and Anders Svensson rejuvenated his international career after moving back to IF Elfsborg at the age of 29.

It would be difficult to imagine a Finnish player similarly changing perceptions and cementing a career in the national side from a Veikkausliiga club. The Swedish squad for their recent qualifers included four home-based players, whereas Baxter only called up Tampere United's Antti Pohja from Veikkausliiga.

Finland's football clubs just cannot pay the same salaries as Allsvenskan sides, and the option to play at their home club means a loss of income and prestige that is just too big for Finns to consider until their mid to late thirties.

The root cause of this problem is the lack of a distinctive footballing identity among Finnish clubs, players and coaches. He argues that Finland needs a style, an ethos in order for everyone to know their jobs more thoroughly and to have confidence in the tactical plan he lays out. On the evidence of the Germany game, it seems as though Finland will play an up-tempo, aggressive style of football that is good enough to trouble the world's best teams.

Baxter has said that he wants his Finland to have two or three younger leaders to replace Litmanen. If Eremenko (20 years old) and Väyrynen (26) continue to play as well as they did against Germany, Finland may well have found them, and journalists might not need the glass ankled statue to write about.

Vamos con el análisis. El martes volvió el Atlético y lo hizo por la puerta grande. Los de Aguirre llegaban a un estadio complicado como es el Philips de Eindhoven, sin Maxi y con algunas dudas tras el partido ante el Valladolid, pero no importó. Apareció el 'Kun', y demostró que es sobrenatural.

Aunque en la primera jugada erró un mano a mano con Isaksson, solo le hicieron falta 8 minutos para marcar su primer gol en la Champions. El redimido Maniche combinaba con Luis García y el catalán ponía un balón para que Agüero la empujase para dentro.

Los fantasmas aparecieron con la lesión de Forlán (que va a estar cuatro semanas de baja) pero otra vez el 'Kun' se encargó de ahuyentarlos convirtiendo una buena jugada de Sinama en un gol para enmarcar. El argentino controló de espaldas y batió al meta holandés tras un espectacular reverso. Era el 0-2 y el Atlético daba una imagen de solidez en todas sus líneas desconocida hasta esta temporada. Sobre todo en defensa, donde las incorporaciones de Ujfalusi y Heitinga, parecen haber alejado las dudas que ha habido en la zaga rojiblanca las últimas temporadas.

El PSV es un equipo con mucha clase pero con gente muy joven, y también un equipo blandito en defensa. Aún así, inquietó en varias ocasiones a un acertado Leo Franco, que sacó varios balones de Lazovic, el joven y atrevido Amrabat y de Affellay, sin duda el futbolista con más talento del equipo, y que va a tardar poco en dar el salto a un grande de Europa.

Cuando más achuchaban los holandeses, llegó el 0-3 de Maniche. Cosas del fútbol, el portugués, díscolo como el sólo, se enfrentó a Aguirre la pasada campaña y perdió un año de fútbol, y ahora, una vez hechas las paces, parece imprescindible en los esquemas del mejicano.

Son días de vino y rosas en la ribera del Manzanares, el 'kun' es idolatrado por la prensa del mundo entero, se ha desatado la euforia y a los colchoneros ya se les da como posibles ganadores de la Champions, pero convendría no olvidarse de que esto recién empieza, que la temporada es muy larga, y que el grupo del Atlético de Madrid es muy complicado y personalmente creo que la baja de Forlán se va a notar en los próximos encuentros.

Barcelona 3-1 Sporting de Lisboa

El otro equipo que jugó en la jornada del martes fue el Barcelona de Guardiola. Victoria aparentemente plácida pero con una dosis de sufrimiento innecesario al final ante un Sporting de Lisboa, que sólo intimidó a los culés cuando éstos llevaban dos goles de ventaja en el marcador.

Guardiola volvió a hacer cambios en la alineación. Con Abidal fuera de la convocatoria, el eje de la zaga fue para Piqué, (gran partido el suyo) y Márquez, dejando el lateral izquierdo para Puyol. Keita actuó de medio centro defensivo por detrás de Iniesta y Xavi, con Messi y Henry en los costados del ataque y Eto'o en la posición de '9'.

El primer gol fue obra de Márquez, al rematar en el segundo palo un córner botado por Alves. Henry, muy criticado por su falta de efectividad de cara a puerta, estuvo muy participativo durante todo el partido, pero de nuevo, sin acierto. Con el 1-0 el Barcelona dominaba el centro del campo y el equipo lisboeta sólo creaba peligro gracias a disparos lejanos. Pero no fue hasta el minuto 15 de la segunda mitad cuando llegó el segundo tanto de los blaugranas. El Sporting se acercaba a los dominios de Valdés, pero en una jugada aislada, Tonel cometió un absurdo penalti a Eto'o que el propio camerunés se encargó de transformar.

Con el 2-0 llegó la relajación del Barcelona. Guardiola retiró a Eto'o para dar entrada a Touré y poco después introdujo a Pedro en lugar de Henry. Entre tanto, el Sporting puso la incertidumbre en los aficionados del Camp Nou cuando Tonel remachó a la red un córner en el minuto 74.

Fue sólo un espejismo, con el gol en contra, el Barça despertó y apareció Iniesta. El de Fuentealbilla está de dulce, y a pesar de partir desde el interior izquierda, se hinchó a dar pases interiores que sus compañeros no aprovechaban, hasta que a tres minutos del final, una genial asistencia del manchego le sirvió a Xavi para poner la sentencia en el marcador.

This will benefit a little from the results from yesterday's Champions League matches, but here's a quick overview of how I think this season's Champions League group stage will play out.

Group A - Chelsea (England ), CFR Cluj-Napoca (Romania), AS Roma (Italy), Bordeaux (France)

Cluj surprised everyone yesterday with a 2-1 win in Rome, but I suspect it will be the highlight of the Champions League for the Romanian champions. Chelsea did as expected in beating Bordeaux 4-0 at Stamford Bridge. Clearly, Chelsea are the favorites to win this group, and though Cluj's win against Roma will make the standings tight for a few rounds, I still expect the Italian runners up to pull away and claim second place in this group. This could change, though, if Roma can't take a result from at least one of the showdowns with Chelsea, and with three points already in the bag, Cluj could step up and take advantage of that early win. We'll get a real test of the Romanians' mettle on matchday two when they host Chelsea.

Group B - Inter Milan (Italy), Panathinaikos (Greece), Werder Bremen (Germany), Anorthosis Famagusta (Cyprus)

Anorthosis surprised a lot of people by becoming the first Cypriot team to qualify for the group stage of the Champions League, knocking off heavily favored Olympiakos in the third qualifying round. The fun should stop there, though, in a very tough group. The Cypriots got a respectable 0-0 draw in Bremen, but the quality of the other teams in this league leave them almost no chance to progress. Inter should win the group easily, and got a good start with a convincing 2-0 win against Panathinaikos in Greece. I expect Bremen and Panathinaikos to battle for the second spot. Bremen is a goal-scoring machine, but its defense always leaves much to be desired. If Panathinaikos can shut down the Bremen attack in the team's head-to-head meetings, the knockout rounds are definitely obtainable. Still, I give the edge to Bremen and expect some high-scoring and highly entertaining games from them.

Group C - Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine), FC Basel (Switzerland), Barcelona (Spain), Sporting Lisbon (Portugal)

While I think Barca will cruise through this group, I think the battle for second place will be highly entertaining. I don't think there's too big a gulf in quality between Shakhtar and Sporting, and Basel, though clearly an underdog, is capable of a surprise here and there that could shake up the standings in this group. Ultimately, I think Portuguese flair will win out, although Shakhtar boasts a potent attack of its own. This season hasn't been kind to the Ukrainian champions, however, as they sit 11th in the Ukrainian Premier League after seven rounds and are not blowing past opponents the way they did last season.

Group D - PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands), Atletico Madrid (Spain), Marseille (France), Liverpool (England)

This makes up the proverbial "group of death" that every competion with a group stage seems to have. Atletico got off to a great start with a 3-0 win against PSV in Holland, and Liverpool kicked off its campaign with a 2-1 win in Marseille, led by a brace from - who else - Steven Gerrard. Atletico has shown so far in the Champions League, including qualifying, an extremely potent attack and a dependable defense, an improvement Madrid's "other" team had to make after surrendering 47 goals in La Liga last season. If that defense can hold, I expect a good run from this team, especially if Diego Forlan, Luis Garcia and Sergio Aguero can fire on all cylinders consistently. Liverpool looks like the other favorite out of this group, especially after a week in which they beat Manchester United and took a hard fought win in a difficult away venue.

Group E - Manchester United (England), Villareal (Spain), Celtic (Scotland), Aalborg (Denmark)

My advantage of predicting having seen a game is gone, but this group looks pretty straightforward on the surface, with Manchester United heads and tails above everyone else-at least on paper. So far this season, though, the English and European champions have looked a shadow of the team they were last year. Injuries have played a part in that, and that could continue. The pending return of Cristiano Ronaldo today at Old Trafford against Villareal will be a boost, but it's offset by injuries to Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov. At least Darren Fletcher will no longer be under pressure to remain United's leading scorer. Villareal are coming off a surprisingly strong season in Spain's La Liga last season, and the Spanish runners up are a force to be reckoned with at home. Likewise, Celtic's hopes to progress in this group rest on their ability to win at home, something they've done well in this competition in the past two years (they've been awful on the road). As for Aalborg: Enjoy the scenery.

Group F - Steaua Bucharesti (Romania), Bayern Munich (Germany), Lyon (France), Fiorentina (Italy)

MLS fans take note: Juan Toja has been playing regularly for Steaua Bucharesti, so we're likely to see an MLS alum get a lot of minutes, at least until Steaua bow out in the group stage. Bayern are my clear-cut favorite to win this group, and I think Lyon and Fiorentina will vie for the second spot. I need an upset prediction somewhere, and this group seems like a good place to find it: Fiorentina will top Lyon in this group. Despite dominance year in and year out in France, Lyon just don't achieve as much as I expect them to in the Champions League, and I think the team's European dream will end extra early this year. Fiorentina is built around a very strong defense, which is led by Sebastien Frey, who I think is one of the most unsung keepers in the game today, and a quick counterattack led by Adrian Mutu. The addition of former AC Milan man Alberto Gilardino in the offseason doesn't hurt, either, as it will bring another good attacker and more Champions League experience to this squad. I won't be too surprised if I'm wrong on this prediction, but I'm standing by it. The Viola meets Lyon in matchday one, so I could be eating my words in less than three hours.

Group G - FC Porto (Portugal), Arsenal (England), Fenerbahce (Turkey), Dynamo Kiev (Ukraine)

This is another intriguing group. Arsenal is a clear favorite to advance from Group G. Porto and Fenerbahce are both attack-minded, free-flowing teams that could vie for the second spot, and Dynamo Kiev will be desperate to improve on last season's showing in the Champions League, when it lost every game it played. I give Fener the edge for second in this group because of the difficulty of playing in Turkey (talk about atmosphere), and because Fener improved a good squad over the summer, rather than selling a star player like Porto did with Ricardo Quaresma. The surprising addition of Dani Guiza, last season's leading scorer in La Liga, and the coaching skills of Luis Aragones should make this quarterfinalist from last season a dangerous dark horse in this season's edition of the Champions League.

1. Arsenal (don't be surprised to see Fener here, either)

4. Dynamo Kiev (but with at least four or five points this year)

Group H - Juventus (Italy), Zenit St. Petersburg (Russia), Real Madrid (Spain), BATE Borisov (Belarus)

BATE, the first Belorussian team to make it to the group stage of Europe's premiere club competition, will face a rude awakening to Champions League life when they travel to Madrid to take on Europe's most decorated side. Ouch. Real Madrid is yet to look outstanding this season, but this should get the wheels turning on the Spanish champions. Juventus, the Old Lady of Italian football, returns after a two-year absence in wake of 2006's match fixing scandal, and I expect them to be hungry. Zenit, meanwhile, is out to prove last season's UEFA Cup triumph was no fluke. Unfortunately for the Russian champions, few teams will be surprised by them this season, and I expect they'll have a chance to defend their UEFA Cup title after failing to advance from the group stage.
