I had a long bike ride planned for today, but you know what they say about best-laid plans. The weather is not cooperating with my desire to ride my bike and stay relatively dry. But I managed to get out for a bit, and I ran across some killer potholes. Now, the streets here are notoriously bad. The potholes are incredible. NOLA.com recently wrote up a nice cataloging system for them. After a big downpour, those potholes fill with water. This makes some of them hard to see, but others become just that much more prominent. Take this strip of potholes on Prytania, near Jefferson. This segment of street has been replaced by the entirely useless loose gravel. The water makes it turn a cloudy paste as the holes it was trying to fill just become bigger and bigger. This stretch is so pockmarked that there isn't any real way around; you've got to push on through. I snaked my bike between the two at the top left.

I narrowly missed this other scene of car, water, and backsplash. While I can snake around these potholes, cars have no choice but to drive over/through them. Good cars slow down significantly, not wanting to ruin their rims, I suppose, but sometimes I fantasize that they don't want to spray that rheumy water all over me. This particular splash left me dry, but I can't say the same about the sky. I wonder if the roads here will ever be fixed, really, or if the temporary patching system that seems to have taken over will one day make all our roads look and feel like the surface of the moon. When I do manage to find a smooth street, such as sections of Baronne, or lower Magazine, it feels like a wonderful gift. I used to take that kind of street for granted. No more.

Jesus was kind of pissed about being kept in a Rubbermaid container. He ate his celery and cucumbers

Jesus was kind of pissed about being kept in a Rubbermaid container. He ate his celery and cucumbers but he kept trying to escape. The bucket was big enough and contained enough water that he could swim around and he figured out how to climb up on the rocks when he just wanted to chill. I thought he had it pretty good and not a lot of reason to complain. I wasn't sure he was going to eat the vegetables, so I gave him some Raisin Bran too.

When I left the house today, I followed the river tracks north to see if I could find the spot where he was washed away from. I thought about putting him in the river on the other side of town, but I figured he might have friends and family someplace nearby and perhaps if I stuck him in some water source, he could find his way back to them. I'm a sucker like that.

I followed the road up for a while until I came to a spot where there was a footbridge. I got out and found a way down to the water, went back to the car for Jesus and brought him down to the creek. I set him in the mud and within seconds he stepped into the water and whooshed away. I hope he ended up someplace he wanted to go.

I went over to my friend's house for a nice, cool swim in her pool. She has the cutest pool ever. It's just the perfect size and depth for cooling off and swimming a little bit. I left as the rain was starting. I had to run some errands involving food, first Costco and then the supermarket. The rain was picking up and I could smell the rain on hot asphalt smell that takes me back to summers on the east coast. Later in the grocery store, the rain was pounding the roof. I love living here.

I realized, as I was driving home, that I hadn't been in the position to be driving around my hood during a big rain and now that I have, I've determined that it should be avoided. I got to the road by the power lines where there is a dip into the drainage ditch and the water was level with the road. I sat looking at the water with another woman in another SUV, neither one of us brave enough to try to ford it. Of course, I ended up going first and made it without too much trouble. My street was a bit more trouble however. In one spot on the way home I had to cross another drainage ditch and the water came up to my grill. Yes, I think it's best to plan on being home during big rains. It gives me a good excuse for not leaving the house. The rain is incredible. I cannot believe how much of it falls from the sky in such a short time. The streets are literally rushing rivers within minutes.

Oh, and today I found out who my competition is for the book. Interesting.

[caption id="attachment_34" align="alignright" width="232" caption="Expect torrential rain at times and enjoy!"][/caption]

Houston is on the Gulf Coast and is semi-tropical. You can expect 100% humidity and plenty of rain most of the year. I miss that tropical rain. You'll see.

Hurricanes: Hurricane season for the Atlantic is June 1 to November 30. Obviously some years are worse than others but you'll see at least some tropical storm action every year. Schools run drills for students so you'll get the idea soon enough.

The Heat: People are either indoors with A/C or by the water in the summer. It's definitely hot for a few months (90's), and the humidity makes it feel even hotter. Ocean breezes help a little. The trick is to take up water sports! Swimming, water skiing, kayaking, water skiing, etc. Believe me, you'll meet people who own boats, so say yes when they invite you to go out on the water with them. I lived in the swimming pool as a kid for 6 months of the year so I don't remember the heat really.

A/C tips: Can you believe I had to carry a sweater everywhere during the summer? People blast the A/C everywhere. As for your home, expect big electric bills since you'll be using your A/C quite a bit. And your car A/C will get a workout and might need servicing often. At least your winter bills won't be so bad.

Rain: You shouldn't leave home without a good umbrella. A big rain is far more intense than anything I've ever seen in New England in 20 years. You'll get completely soaked in seconds without an umbrella.

Winter: Is very short (about Christmas through mid-February) but it still gets chilly due to rain and humidity. You'll need a decent waterproof coat with a hood and shoes that keep your feet dry.

Snow? Almost never happens. BUT, if it does, stay off the roads. They aren't equipped to clear or salt the roads effectively PLUS no one knows how to drive in it. It's crazy. Even an inch of rain or sleet is more dangerous in Houston than in the North. Luckily schools are usually canceled even for an inch because it's too exciting for kids to sit still. I remember the 3 times it snowed in 18 years when I grew up, and never more than an inch. Global climate change has made it happen a few more times lately, so who knows what will happen.

Spring and Fall: SO nice. It's great to be comfortably outside during Spring and Fall. Don't expect fall foliage. Do expect lots of Spring flowers, especially azaleas everywhere. Enjoy!

The theme for this week's hunt is hanging. I looked through my stuff and found this one taken in January of this year, right after a good rainstorm. As you might have heard, we're very familiar with rain here in Oregon. It's part of what makes it so beautiful here and also why, after a long winter of rain, we appreciate our summer so much. I love taking photographs after it rains, hence this shot, as everything always looks so fresh. There's something about water, drops, the rain... it's life, new, and can be incredibly, and simply, beautiful. Like these drops hanging off the bare maple tree.

Today rained a lot, but somehow it is still warm and there are beautiful, big puddles. I still can't forget the puddle near Galeria Krakowska in early morning on Tuesday. I was going to the tram after trip to my parents and I was in the hurry, but I still regret it.

I spend the vast majority of my time chasing around my now 20 month old son. Now I know most people

I spend the vast majority of my time chasing around my now 20 month old son. Now I know most people with toddlers know that this can be exhausting and time consuming, but my boy, though I love him dearly, is a destructo extraordinaire. He also changes his mind...frequently. One day he was mad because we were out of milk, and he -always- has milk with breakfast. The next three days he would say "eww" and throw his cup any time there was milk. Then it was fine again... he does this with everything. He also does things like eating/tearing paper, clearing off any and all flat surfaces by throwing everything on the ground... and considering he is a climber, putting things out of reach only tempts him and makes it a safety hazard. Even my mom, who had to raise ME and three other girls, says that she would take all of us on our worst day before him on his best... he just doesn't slow down!

On the off chance that I get him settled down and don't have to cook dinner, clean, run errands, pay bills, walk the dog, change the cat box, get some mysterious substance out of my hair, pacify the in laws, or have other pressing business to attend, I'm usually on the computer. This also happens on days like yesterday where Ian just wanted to cuddle in my lap all day. I like to spend embarresingly long amounts of time looking up random stuff. Yesterday it was bento boxes. Several hours of just looking for bento boxes, starting with ones for my sisters for school, then thinking Ian and I should have some for picnics now that I have my bike, followed by once again trying to find information on when asian children learn to use chopsticks and how they don't poke their eyes out like I know Ian would (still not success in my search). Today its my future christmas present. Unfortunatly I will most likely be getting the much cheaper version... but anything will make me happy! Even a french press! (which I might want anyways). I actually see a lot of people who want this sort of thing just to have it, then it sits and collects dust... it makes me cry. This is something i would use daily... a lot easier then running out for coffee, and tastier then my everyday drip (which I still drink happily!) Wouldn't that be a great way to get going in the morning, give myself an afternoon boost, and settle down in the evening? Also, I would -so- be one of those people who learns to make the foam designs in my cup of coffee... I bet I could figure out how to make a sunflower! Wouldn't that be fun! Anyways... I suppose that is enough of that for now... I havent been able to go out for coffee in a few days and I'm going to make myself cry.

Hmm... Now I'm thinking that today seems like a good day for a special mommy-Ian dinner. I don't have the car, but there is a little italian place I -love- that is in easy walking distance... maybe we will go if it doesn't rain. I like doing special things with my boy "just because". One of my earliest memories, I think was two or three, -maybe- four but I don't remember Casey being born yet... mommy took me to a special "fancy" just us dinner. I don't know if it really was a fancy place, or just nicer then fast food or Ryans, but I thought it was so nice! I remember being worried that they wouldn't serve milk, they did though. Mom had me ask, I think it made me feel like a big girl. Sorry, I know thats random... it's just funny the things that stick out to you.

Oh yeah! Rain! And that is why I always forget my plants. It kept raining so much, and they were getting overwatered, so I got to forget them for a while... now I have to try to remember them. Poor neglected plants... Who ever thought to try to give me anything to grow?!? Here I am thinking to myself how I need to water them... and it looks as though it will rain again. Go figure.

It’s raining. Everybody’s running in. I’m going out. A few curious glances from passers-by are nothing I’m not used to. Instead of an umbrella, I open my arms, inviting the heavy cloak of rain to embrace me.

As I walk, the magical percussion seeps into my ears. Raindrops are drumming loudly over the rooftops, hitting against the windows, running through trees and violently bending branches, its unique, gravelly sound echoing down the drains. If there’s one thing I enjoy more than the sound of the rain, it’s the smell of it, the smell of earth, of nature, of smoke evaporating from the warm streets.

It washes away the dust and the dirt, and the following day, when the sun rises, the whole city looks fresh and new. It’s this cleansing aspect of the rain that I like the most, the idea that it can purify whatever it touches.

Maybe even me.

“One who shows signs of mental aberration is, inevitably, perhaps, but cruelly, shut off from familiar, thoughtless intercourse, partly excommunicated; his isolation is unwittingly proclaimed to him on every countenance by curiosity, indifference, aversion, or pity, and in so far as he is human enough to need free and equal communication and feel the lack of it, he suffers pain and loss of a kind and degree which others can only faintly imagine, and for the most part ignore.” - Charles Horton Cooley

I ♥ mint green !

We [ me, myself, my imaginary friends, fairy princess up there and I] are slowly and unwillingly returning to boot camp mode, as I prepare to enjoy my last few days of freedom [ 2 more precisely ] before I start cramming for French, writing essays and admission letters, running and so on. Today I tried to capture a short video of the rain and posted it on you tube, however, my effort were pretty much in vain, because when you post things on you tube the quality goes down along with the size of the video, so you can barely see the drops of rain. Still I'll post the video anyway, in case someone is curious or likes to hear the sound of rain drops hitting the pavement. [ Zennnnnnnnn............... ]

The white car in front of my house is not mine, just for the record and there are a lot of trees because I live near a park .Oh !!!!! WAIT!!! Just saw, you can see it in high quality on You Tube!! YEY!!! And it's clear !!! So click on the video and it'll take you to the page on YT, where right beneath the Views, there's the "Watch in high quality", click on that and c'est fini !!:)

Yesterday the rain got pretty aggressive and I got pretty scared. Mainly because the lightning was very powerful and went in flashes for a very long time. I could hardly fall asleep despite having taken 2 sleeping pills and going to bed rather early. Hopefully, it won't be as noisy and reminiscent of a night at studio 54, for I desperately need to be in a decent state tomorrow as to resume my French preparation. And speaking of, I briefly talked to my French teacher today around 5 pm. She's still in Thailand and going to some island tomorrow. I can't remember the name right now to save my life, but what did stick with me was the fact that a movie in which Leonardo Di' Caprio stared was filmed there....aaa... " The Island" perhaps ? ... Not a huge fan of Leonardo after "The Titanic" [ I do cry... every single time ! ], although I have to admit he did star in a couple of very good movies, which I adored : "The departed" and " Blood Diamond". Gotta admit, the boy has a certain something when it comes to picking out movie roles.

.

.

.

.

.

Ok, maybe I even liked him in "Romeo and Juliet", but that because of the hair and the pool scene. Nothing more !

Moving on, I have opened all my bookmarks under the UNIVERSITY group and gathered all the prospectous-es in order to finish writing down dates, deadlines, prices and courses by tomorrow, in hopes on finally deciding on a set group of Uni's and proffessions. Also, I made some time and booked the tickets for tomorrow's Batman. Me and my friend decide to go at 19:40. She also decided to bring her boyfriend along. So I deicided to bring my possy of imaginary friends in order to balance things out. Spiderman included! Take that, superhero fans! [ I am fully aware that I stopped making sense soem time ago... indulge me ]. And on that note, I am going to end this informative post.

Please look forward to a thinking topic, a picture post and enjoy the lovely music that I will upload from now on with the help of my newly installed BOX.

Voyez-vous bientôt ! [ according to Yahoo! Babel Fish = See you soon! ]

Me viens alors à l'esprit trois choses.

The weather lately has been cold and stormy. And in my soul I feel that it is not summer at all. The short summer and rain filled days we have had of late are fitting to the weather of my soul. The weather lately has been unpredictable here - warm and cloudy, stormy and thunder-filled, cold and grey. And the emotions of my soul have also been unpredictable. Today it started out overcast and very cold, then it got warm and even a little sunny, then a big storm hit but it passed quickly and now it is warm and cloudy with just a little sun breaking through. My soul also has gone through many changes today.

"For above every cloud, every storm, rise up calm, clear, divine, the infinite skies; they embrace the temptest even as the sunshine; by their permission it exists within their boundless peace; therefore it cannot hurt, and must pass away, while there they stand as ever, domed up eternally, lasting, strong, and pure." - George MacDonald

"It is not the high summer alone that is God's... All man's winters are His - the winter of our sorrow, the winter of our unhappiness, even 'the winter of our discontent.'
Winter does not belong to death, although the outside of it looks like death. Beneath the snow, the grass is growing. Below the frost, the roots are warm and alive. Winter is only a spring too weak and feeble for us to see that it is living. The cold does for all things what the gardener has sometimes to do for valuable trees: he must half kill them before they will bear any fruit. Winter is in truth the small beginning of the spring." - George MacDonald

I actually got caught outside walking Thompkins, my beloved lil gentleman, when it started pouring.

I check the weather obsessively so I had brought my massive-ist Mary Poppins-like umbrella which I immediately popped open. We also stood under a tree because...

Thompkins just TOO diva to walk in the rain bIAtches!!

(Said in Phreaked's best N. Philly trannie hooker voice)

When it had cleared, or so I thought, we started walking again, only to make it two blocks before THE Heeeavens Opened Up and Raineth Down Vengeance My Child!!

Imagine me, between the marble columns of an apartment building, trying to seek shelter... only to huddle in the corner of the apartment landing with my umbrella strategically moving to whatever directing the wind was trying to wisk away me and my lil black dog. Wicked!!

We managed to stay pretty warm and dry as the thunder was BOOMING and lightening CRACKING right above our heads. CRAZY

I know I should have just jumped in a cab, but I was kind of having fun roughing it.

Then again, I used to play "orphans" instead of "house" when I was little. Maybe I read too many Boxcar Children Books...

"i cant get no, satisfaction"- rolling stones.

I am sure that there are many folks that are a little worried about the hurricane in southwest Texas and norther Mexico right now but i am not. The temperature has cooled down 20 degrees and we are finaly getting the rain that we needed so bad. The drive home last night from San Antonio, i will admit, was a little scary but the pleasantries of this storm far out weigh the dangers that sometimes come with these storms.

I asure you, I have seen my fair share of storms.

Last year my family and i had to hide in the hallway and wait for the tornadoes to pass by. We moved the couch in the hallway with us just in case the house collapsed and then we covered our bodies in pillows and blankets for protection. The tornadoes sounded like a train running through town. The town sirens were blaring, like the Pearl Harbor attack, but only for 15 minutes or so.

The weirdest part of the whole experience was the radio. The emergency broadcasting would come on and tell us to find a solid structure in the house to hide under, away fom windows of course. Then the radio would start playing again. "I can't get no, satisfaction..but i tried, and i tried.. i cant get no, no.no.no."

Although i will never get use to these massive storms that charge through southwest Texas, i can say that this storm is weaker than our typical everyday storms that we get every year. So if your out there mom, dont worry about me.

You see water ,after a shower on top of this flower. Now the plant of course uses water for its growth, but it can't 'drink' the water on its petals or flowers.Similarly earth needs us humans.Yet even though we might add beauty to earth with our civilization,we are like water on a flower. When a new dawn comes everything will be destroyed and the flower will keep its own peace.

We humans are from a rain,a rain of some sort, which throws living things into the world.Someday we will go back to our origin, who knows where it is? But when we do go back home,we will be a warrior, who went to battle time and we will have the sweet memories to cherish. We will also have look forward to coming back to earth,so that to humanity we can do something.Or we might just turn up as something else and be on the lap of mother earth again.
Whatever we are and whatever we will be,
is just temporary,
so for all the ups and downs,
and sad past counts,
remember that you longed for here,
and like earth there is no place better.
For in love as in hate
and in hate as in love,
there is only one thing and
everything else is an illusion...
