Wondering what specific experience Barack Obama had as a civil rights lawyer?

Drum roll... Hold your breath... this is huge... text message coming...

Ten cases! WOW! He made formal appearance in TEN CASES!

All that writing behind the scenes must have made his wrist sore.

"I was one of the better writers. I ended up doing the more cerebral writing, less trial work," Obama added. "That's actually something I regret -- not doing more trial work."

"He wrote lots of substantial memos, but he didn't try any cases," said Judson Miner, a partner in the firm who was Obama's boss.

A search of all the cases in Cook County Circuit Court in which Obama made an appearance since he graduated from Harvard in 1991 shows: Zero.

The search for employment has begun in earnest. Before I left Germany, I had a resume worked out and formatting properly. With a couple tweaks here and there, it can work for any position that I think I'm qualified for and have the chutzpah to apply to. I didn't have a cover letter until today.

The cover letter seems like a mix of stating the obvious and talking oneself up. You spend a paragraph stating why you're writing ("I want this job"), a paragraph why you're qualified ("I'm awesome; here's why") and finish it off by begging ("Look at my resume now please"). The resume is at least a practical document: a list of accomplishments, a personal history, an exposition of abilities. The cover letter is a twisted version of that where you address the employer directly and talk about yourself in that business-speak that says nothing while trying to sound official. My cover letter is pretty plain, but I spice up the vocabulary when talking about my abilities. It's so very unnatural for me to do that.

The search is going better than I thought in some areas, worse in others. The replies I've gotten have been mostly impersonal apart from one reply that showed up about two minutes after I emailed the organization (they asked for my phone number and if I had a car in the shortest official email I've ever received).

Unemplyoed and loving it? Hardly. But it's not crunch time yet. «»

First and foremost, re-read a resume before sending it out. It takes a few minutes to proofread. Bet

First and foremost, re-read a resume before sending it out. It takes a few minutes to proofread. Better yet, ask someone to take a second look at the resume to check for obvious spelling and grammatical errors. Employers do not want to hire someone who can't be bothered to pay attention to detail.

Do not use "I" or other pronouns in a resume. The resume should be written in the third person. These next suggestions may seem obvious, but use an appropriate e-mail address and refrain from using colored, textured or designed paper. Resumes are for job seeking, not for social networking.

Next, resumes should be limited to a page. Any longer, and a resume could be passed over for the simple fact that it exceeded one page in length. All relevant information, with the exception of some resumes listing extensive technical skills, publications etc., should fit onto one standard page. It is acceptable to omit short-term employment, especially if it is not relevant to the position for which one is applying. Employment gaps are easier to explain compared to short employment stints.

Any jobs that fall outside a 10-year period should be left out as well. Anything over that timeframe may even hinder a job search as it will indicate age due to the length of time one has been in the workforce. The jobs that are deemed relevant should be added with concise descriptions. Potential employers do not need a play-by-play of a day in the life of a _________.

That being said, personal information, unless one is a model seeking out a modeling gig, should be excluded as well. Pictures, hobbies and interests should not clutter up a resume as they are inappropriate for a professional. Another way to highlight professionalism is to omit the negative. Turn a bad situation into a positive learning experience. Everyone has troublesome work experiences, but candidates can stand out from the crowd when they display real life problem-solving skills.

Keep everything in a resume completely factual. Not only is it important not to lie, but embellishing a resume can also be seen as bad practice. In today's Internet-era, it is extremely easy for an employer to find out whether something on a resume is true or not. Even altering a job title can been seen as deceptive.

A well-written resume could be the difference between getting an interview and not even receiving a response to a resume. It can also raise the potential for landing a better paying job.

When looking for a job, we all know a resume is the first step to getting prepared. If you're like most people, you search over dozens of free websites with tips on how to write a resume or you go onto resume writers webpages and look at their samples or you might even head over to the library or local bookstore and view the samples written there.

Does this work? How effective is it to copy from a webpage or a book when trying to find a job? Is this the best way to sell yourself to a potential employer?

After speaking to numerous job seekers in New York, most will tell you no. Just like observing a teacher in the classroom won't make you a good or even decent teacher, copying samples won't ensure you have a good or even decent resume. Resume writers, just like teachers, have spent years developing their craft, are responsible for staying updated on their craft, and have learned little tips which might not appear so evident to a novice.

So how do you write a good resume? How can you ensure that your resume is the best document possible?

First make a list of your best attributes. Then figure out how you have contributed to the success of the companies you've worked. Thid, determine if your skills match what a company is seeking. Lastly, create a resume that is appealing to the eyes, have bullets, and is formatted in a way that makes sense.

If you are unsure of how your resume adds up or if you need help...you know where to find me.

As always, good luck with your job search.

My AEZ Experience

My AEZ Experience

Prior to joining UC Berkeley, the idea of a professional fraternity was unknown to me. I was strongly against the idea of joining a fraternity, as it was often associated with binge drinking. I did not want to be hazed and I did not want to be a "frat boy." All of this, coupled with family members and friends telling me fraternities are a bad idea, convinced me to avoid such organizations. One Thursday night in early September 2005, I heard that AEZ* was holding an informational session--I decided to skip it. However, after some whining by another freshman friend, I decided to go. I was thoroughly impressed by the brothers' professionalism, presentation, and organization of the event. The ideas presented were great, but I still wasn't sold on joining a campus organization my freshman year. I wanted to ease into classes and college life without having to stress about other commitments.

A few days later I was walking home after visiting a family friend (who also studied at Berkeley) when I ran into two AEZ brothers, Rakesh Vij and Neil Bhalerao. They asked me if I was going to their rush event later that day and I said that I was sold on the idea of AEZ but wanted to wait until my sophomore year to join. But I was curious to know how that might change my experience.

Rakesh responded: "AEZ is a great choice regardless of what year you decide to pledge. The skills you will learn throughout the pledge process are invaluable and are likely to aid you throughout your college career-- in classes, internships, and other on campus groups. We understand that you're smart; everybody that comes to Berkeley isn't here by chance. But once you're here there is nothing that distinguishes you from the other 40,000 students. There is nothing that puts you a step ahead. The goal of our organization is to help each brother make the most of his potential during his four years in college. The best way to accomplish that is by using all four years to get there, as opposed to three."

I was sold! After asking for a slight extension on the application deadline, I headed back to my dorm and got dressed for the rush event: AEZ goes to the A's game. Catchy, right?

I had no idea at the time that I was making the BEST decision of my college career. Not only was my pledge semester the most fun time I've had at Cal, it was the most productive and enriching 10 weeks of my life. No exaggeration. Since crossing I've had the opportunity to meet CEOs of various companies, leverage AEZ's connections for internships, and establish a lifelong brotherhood with many friends. And it truly has helped me make the most of my potential. I had no idea what a proper resume should look like and what guidelines it should follow. Older AEZ brothers have helped make my resume effective and now the younger guys are turning to me for guidance. The system for getting and giving help in AEZ is quite impressive. I can call anyone, at anytime in the day, and be assured that they'll take time out of their schedule to make sure their brother is doing okay and getting what he needs.

The other area in which AEZ has given me phenomenal guidance is with interview skills. Through extensive mock interviews and company/industry research, AEZ has helped me get working opportunities in the last two years. I've only interviewed for five positions in the last three years but I have received four offers and taken three of them.

But AEZ doesn't stop at making opportunities. It has given me skills to succeed in the work place as well. Prior to crossing I had already taken workshops in Microsoft Powerpoint, Excel, Outlook, and more. To ensure each brother is well rounded, pledges attend workshops that cover topics in multiple industries, not just the area in which they are majoring. For example, during my pledge process I attended workshops in investing, the pharmaceutical drug industry, as well as computer engineering.

Realizing early how powerful and valuable this organization can be to those who participate, I make it a point to always give back in any way I can. As a sophomore I was the fraternity's first ever Alumni Relations chair and I put into place multiple programs and events that will now stay with AEZ forever. This position also made my network with the older brothers and alumni much stronger as I became the go-to guy for all alumni communications. As a junior I was the Senior Vice President of AEZ where, along with the President, I organized, all major endeavors for our organization. As a senior in college now, I have decided not to hold an executive position, but rather serve as an advisor to the new leaders.

I'm often asked, "Tushar, you still have a year left in AEZ, why didn't you run for President?" The point of AEZ is to create new leaders, and due to the horizontal nature of the organization, you do not need to hold one of the two executive positions to lead the fraternity in a particular direction. The best way to create new leaders is by giving more brothers an opportunity to be a leader. I hope that future brothers share this mentality.

To sum up this fairly lengthy post-- I am very content with my decision. Not only have I learned many valuable skills through AEZ, but I have helped shape the future of those younger than me who also share the same passion I have for this powerful network. To any incoming freshmen at UC Berkeley, I strongly suggest you check out AEZ and see if it's right for you.

*AEZ, short for Alpha Epsilon Zeta, is the West Coast Premier South Asian Professional Fraternity. Its goal is to create the largest South Asian network amongst professionals and graduate students. It was established on February 19, 2003 by four UC Berkeley students.

It actually looks as though there’s quite a bit of copywriting jobs around, or I could work for an ESL publication with one of the big Taiwanese newspapers, or I could get an in-house editing position with a publishing company… so many options!

I wonder what my resume would look like to a Taiwanese publishing company, full as it is of arty stuff and so lacking in anything concretely business like.

Only eleven weeks to go. I am beginning to get that weird feeling of excitement merged with the possibility that I might crap myself.

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia: Border talks topped the agenda Monday for Thai and Cambodian foreign ministers

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia: Border talks topped the agenda Monday for Thai and Cambodian foreign ministers in a bid to find a lasting solution to a lingering territorial dispute that brought the two neighbors close to an armed clash.

The latest meeting was scheduled for Monday in the Thai resort town of Hua Hin, following two inconclusive rounds of talks.

On July 28, the foreign ministers agreed to withdraw their troops from the disputed area near the 11th century Preah Vihear temple.

Both countries' militaries pulled out most of their troops from the disputed territory on Saturday, leaving only 10 soldiers from each side at the compound of a pagoda near the temple, according to Hang Soth, director-general of the Preah Vihear National Authority, a Cambodian government agency managing the historic site.

Cambodia's Information Minister Khieu Kanharith confirmed Sunday that only 10 Cambodian soldiers and 10 Thai troops remained.

About 800 troops from Cambodia and 400 from Thailand had been deployed to Preah Vihear and the surrounding area in a monthlong standoff in which weapons were drawn once but no shots were fired.

"The tension has eased considerably. There is no more confrontation," Hang Soth said Sunday.

The standoff began on July 15 after UNESCO, the U.N.'s cultural agency, approved Cambodia's application to have the Preah Vihear temple named a World Heritage Site. Thailand and Cambodia have both long claimed the temple, which the World Court awarded to Cambodia in 1962.

A significant portion of my MBA admissions consulting applicants come to be with little to no extrac

A significant portion of my MBA admissions consulting applicants come to be with little to no extracurricular experience since their undergraduate days. While this is a problem that can be addressed, it can show a lack of proper planning over the long term. A lot of applicants don't think about the impact of their actions on their applicant competitiveness when the graduate from undergrad. To a certain extent, even I was the same way.

What I like most about some of my clients is the the way some of them are way ahead of the game we call the MBA application process. Those that have been planning since day 1 to go back to b-school tend to be distinguishing yourself from your peers out of the gate and these habits show when constructing the business school application.

This is what I tell those who have graduated and are planning to apply to business school in a few years:

Make sure you find a mentor at your employer. This does not have to be formal but it always helps when someone can show you the ropes. This person should be senior and be respected in the office.

This mentor will also be able to make introductions for you around the org. This will help when it comes to recommendation time.

Adcoms will consider your tenure and the ratio of leadership experience to overall experience at your work. Work to maximize this so that you can write about it eventually in your essays.

Make sure you are asking for leadership responsibility. It does not matter if it is leading the charge with organizing the company holiday party or asking for more work when on a project. It's called managing your manager and it works wonders when its time for a promotion. Do this and more opportunities will arise. You may get to pick and chose your project work.....

Stepping up also helps with respect to your eventual recommendation when your manager is asked for how well you rank against your peer group.

Seek out those in the organization who have MBAs. Get to know them. Eventually, ask them to lunch and get to know how they liked their MBA experience.

Get involved with extracurriculars at work. Assume a leadership role as well as I have alluded to above.

See what pre-MBA mentoring programs are available to you. I know UCLA Anderson has the Riordan programs. This is a great way to gain exposure.

Join several other organization types:

Toastmasters International - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toastmasters_International

A young professionals organization in your city - these orgs have social and business elements that will help you network.

Meetup.com - look for groups on meetup that have business or philanthropic goals that align with your interests.

As you get within a year of applying, go to open houses and MBA tours. Get your name and face out there. Adcoms have an uncanny way of remembering who you are.

For international experience to be significant it has to be something that you can write about at length and appropriately in a b-school essay.

Can you articulate how you lead a team in a multi-national or cross border environment? This is what the adcom would want to see if you were writing an essay. A lot of applicants have worked occasionally overseas. More important is what you learned, how it changed your perspective, how you overcame an obstacle and how you produced a positive team outcome.

That is, what you got out of it and what you can put down on paper is what will set your experience apart from other applicants. That is where I consider the line drawn with respect to whether or not an experience is significant.

With respect to any extracurricular international experience (start-up, professional volunteerism, etc.), if you can write about it effectively as part of your positioning then it's significant and should be considered for an essay topic. So yes, this could fall under international experience as you interacted with others with perhaps different operating norms and value sets.

Remember, I always tell my clients "WWACD" or "What Would the Adcom Do?" Keeping that perspective help put a reality check on a lot of questions that pop up during the admissions process.

My now-fiance had a great blog post idea: How social media is transforming the job search and recrui

My now-fiance had a great blog post idea: How social media is transforming the job search and recruiting field - Thus, here we are, and below I hope you find some great helpful resources and add to this developing list.

****************

Social Networking Sites

Linkedin - Not only does Linkedin allow people to post jobs, but you can also post jobs yourself, or send jobs to your connections. In addition, you can search for jobs at certain firms, see who posted them, and see if you know anyone who works there. Very informative for the investigative types.

Facebook - Certain Facebook group and fan pages are used for recruiting potential job candidates. For example, the U.S. Department of State uses its fan page as a recruiting tool into foreign policy, public affairs, foreign services officer, or even offers to help navigate a career path.

MyWorkster - MyWorkster offers its users a professional presence online. You can create a profile, resume and even a video resume. This network also has a job listing database, blogs, and more.

Twitter Recruiter's/Job Postings

Many people post job openings they've either heard about or are currently trying to fill in a tweet, with a link to the job posting. (One great reason alone to become a Twitter-er!) However, more companies and individuals are creating Twitter-streams to post jobs and recruit talent. Some include:

Jim Stroud

Jason Alba

InfoSourcer

IMC2

Interactive Jobs

Jim Stroud over at the Recruiters Lounge has posted about recruiters and Twitter...surprised that he could only find 85 recruiters in a Twitter search! In my opinion, that's 85 reasons right there to start a twitter feed.

To find information on a particular industry or job field, use Twitter Search to conduct a search query for certain keywords like "job positions," "recruiter" or "career advice."

TwitHire is also a Twitter application that lets you bundle your job postings into 140 characters. It's also a great resource to look at current job openings.

Blogs

Jeremiah Owyang has created a blog series "On the Move," highlighting individuals moving within the social media profession. The series also lists great resources to getting plugged into a social media job, as well as listing current high-profile movers and shakers in the social media world (those who work at Fortune 5000 firms with 1000 employees or more).

Alltop.com, a blog aggregate service by topic, has a 'career' page, which features numerous blogs about how to get a job, keep a job, recruit for jobs and more.

Search for blogs based in the city you want to work. For example, KCRecruiting is a Kansas city blog that works to connect job seekers with KC opportunities or author Jim Durbin's other more general blog, Social Media Headhunter.

More

There's also other, perhaps more traditional, job search and recruiting strategies too:

Monster,

Job Fox,

Job-Hunt ( who has a list of Fortune 500 career sites and employers by state!),

Careerbuilder,

the Web site of the firm you want to work for,

employee blogs or Twitter account,

CEO blogs of the firm(s) you want to work for,

researching the firm's social media use/presence,

industry-specific list servs,

your college/University network,

your schools network (i.e. Mizzou Mafia for Missouri Journalism),

fraternity and sorority networks,

professional organization networks and Web sites,

Honorary organizations (i.e. Delta Sigma Pi, Omicron Delta Kappa)

listen to career advice and industry news podcasts

Word of Mouth (friends, parents, mentors)

Basically, my research has shown that social media is revolutionizing now only business - but how to get employees, find employees and to become an employee.

I know this is a huge, developing topic. And, there's lots to add, so I look forward to hearing from you all and your experiences. =)

*Note: I didn't make this information industry specific, but I could if you guys would like. It does lean a bit towards those in social media....course, I've also noticed that for social media job searchers, in a way, you have the easiest of jobs because those are the jobs people are posting in the social media space. Other fields/industries are a bit slow to catch on...are
am I wrong?

There has been a surprising toll on today’s employees. In the past when there has been an economic

There has been a surprising toll on today’s employees. In the past when there has been an economic downturn most corporations have mass layoffs, and then re-hire more employees when times are bright again. However, now it isn’t as beneficial to do business this way, it costs too much money to try and re-hire employees and to spend money on recruiters and agencies to find the employees in the first place.

In order to help with employee retention and to save money on the re-hiring process companies are now turning to cutting employee hours. 3.7 million jobs have been forcibly turned into part time from full time jobs, leaving many people without anywhere to turn, and without many choices to make. In cutting hours many employers also save on the benefits and health costs that they pay out to full time employees.

This is an interesting new practice that has been developing and has a lot to do with the unemployment rate. The current unemployment rate doesn’t reflect all those that are currently suffering because of lack of hours and insurance. So what do we do about it?

My suggestions are these: if you are currently in a position that is stable – do everything you can to maintain the status quo, it is probably not the best time to ask for a raise. If you are in a position that the hours have been cut, then the options you have are to; use what extra money you have to invest in something that will give you a good return on your money or find another part time job, preferably one with benefits. It is also a good idea to keep circulating your resume on job boards like Hotjobs, Careerbuilder and your local states Employment job board.

As an MBA admissions consultant I often have to take a step back with my clients. Over the years I have learned a lot from my clients and have come to realize that the definitions of proper interview dress or attire varies by region, country and even culture.

This is the deal, and I dissuade anyone from thinking anything to the contrary:

Wear a dark colored suit (Grey, Black, Charcoal) with a white or light blue shirt.

Wear a tie that has as little design or pattern in it at possible. Solid colored ties are good.

Wear shoes that are polished with dark socks. By shoes I mean dress shoes with dark laces, not “comfort” shoes, timberlands or Uggs. By dark I mean dark blue or black.

Do not wear anything that is tight-fitting or shows body parts excessively. This is an interview not a club.

Cut the tags off your clothing. Nothing says Men’s Wearhouse $199 special than tags still sewn onto the sleeve of a jacket. Don’t laugh too much, I have seen this as an MBA admissions interviewer. It tells me the applicant is clueless at worst or knows a good sale when he sees one at best.

Get a shave and a haircut……shower.
