We've tried this before and it was a bit of...well...fail. It was an experiment that really did not work. And so, of course, what made the most sense was to do it again. It's rather interesting to note that we almost did not do the final sketch. People thought it would be alienating and get a response of "silent confusion". It just seemed too awkward. I was supposed to play the son, Fosby. But the costume shop supplied a shirt for a child, so I could not fit into it. Peter took over the role, and it is comedy gold.

What do you mean that's way off?!

Geez...picky, picky.

Anyways...here we go, once again mining the world of Christian dating. A topic that is endlessly ripe for sending up. But at the same time, the ending is a little sweeter than usual for us. I think it is due to all the married members of Rock TV. Marriage is mellowing you guys!!!!!

My favorite bits are "Check engine Light" and Johnny Bowflex's romantic speech. And Leroy with the fan. The first fan we used got destroyed and a blade narrowly missed Leroy's head and the camera.

It's worth noting that this is one of the first Rock TV's essentially made without much of a script-mainly because it was meant to be a joke that appeared in an upcoming Rock TV. However, we took a scalpel to it and rebuilt it...better and stronger.

Recently, we finished a documentary that follows the making of Rock TV's the Hills Have Mimes. As documentaries go, I think this turned out quite well. This is not one of those six minute featurettes you find on a DVD saying "This is just the most awesome movie ever!!!!" This is the kind of documentary you get with the 25th anniversary set. The cast and crew take you through every step of the process. I am not allowed at writer meetings, so it was interesting to see what they do.

Last year Rock TV made a documentary following the process of making the Hills Have Mimes video.

If you're interested in watching it, it is now on youtube, divided into 6 parts. As far as film-making documentaries go, I'd say it's a pretty entertaining one (but don't expect the regular humor jokes you find in the normal Rock TVs - it's still a documentary):

Part One
Part Two
Part Three
Part Four
Part Five
Part Six

Peter has been warning viewers that the first part (showcasing the writers' meetings) is a little uninteresting compared to the remaining parts, but I like that part. So if you watch it, I guess be warned that that part might be boring. Or it might not be boring. Who knows. Am I right?

So, the tactic was a little different this time. This was not a “message” video, it

So, the tactic was a little different this time. This was not a "message" video, it's just made to be entertaining. So we decided to do a "Halloween" video. It's been years since Rock TV touched horror movie themes. And really, this idea of a scripted horror parody is a first for the Rock TV team.

Some of my favorite moments?

Kevin channeling a desperate William Hurt towards the end.
"We don't got time for plot development!"
The "thousands of mimes".
Peter's story while Adam goes off to bed.
The ending.

I feel we captured the typical horror cliches. This is something I feel most "Parody Movies" such as the Scary Movie Franchise, Date Movie, Epic Movie, etc. all fail at. They spoof specific scenes from specific movies, even lifting dialog whole hog, while throwing in bodily fluid "jokes" and T&A as substitutes for actual...well... jokes. Yes. I am actually suggesting our seven minute movie is a better film parody than Scary Movie (1-4), Epic Movie and Date movie. But maybe not Full Moon High, starring Adam Arkin.

Our Mimes were great, and the human actors did a great job (Ted and Kevin really stood out for me). I also felt the crew did a great job. The lighting is effective and moody, making for some genuinely creepy shots. The Mimes have an unsettling look to them.

As an aside, I have two roles in this Rock TV. Any idea what they were?

If Fox were to make a reality show in which America (or 3 unqualified judges) would choose a pastor for a mega-church in Florida from a pool of undesirable candidates, I think it might look a little bit like this:

This one was interesting to watch on Friday and then discuss with people afterwards. I really enjoyed Todd's funeral scene (walking that wonderful line between humorous and horrifying), Beaker's tithing message, and Leroy's commercial - so basically what everybody else liked. So, I liked the video, but was pretty surprised to hear how much everybody else loved it: a few of my friends, after the service, told me that it was one of the best they've ever seen. Woah and Hooray! That is cause for celebration!

A youtube celebration. The kind where you let go of all your fears and inhibitions, hit play on that video up above, and enjoy some pure "comic copper"!

I confess, I am not sure this is one of our strongest videos, though I do like the basic concept, and the theme is a worthwhile one. I just don't know if it quite reaches Revelation 9/11 for the marriage of humor and message. But come on...Beaker? That's pure comedy gold. At least comedy copper.

My favorite moment was Todd's "drive-by" (which Todd noticed the Simpson's movie had a similair moment). "LIFE AND DEATH, PEOPLE!!!!"

Plus, the Beaker puppet was amazing expressive for having static features outside the moving mouth. Somehow, just dropping the jaw made Beaker "come alive".

The Ad for Sleep was great as well, especially Leroy's ad-lib.

Recently the Rock TV team gave me permission to hang out with them during their writing meetings (thanks again, you guys!). The result of some of those meetings was "103.7 - WWJD Christian Radio!"

It pokes solid fun at some of the strange directions our culture has gone in the name of Christianity, but I think even more it was an excuse to get two otherwise rational people into bee costumes.

Read Peter's blog for more explication!
