It gives you a lot of insight into who they are. It's a very intimate thing to be in someone's space and among their possessions, see what they read and eat, and look at the items they choose to display. I recently came across a tour of Roland Emmerich's house on the New York Times Web site, and it just blew me away. Totally wacky, irreverent, and bizarre. See what you think. By the way, for another great site for house tours, check out the Selby.

Remember this name: Roland Emmerich. He's the director of such "big-budget, spectacle-filled" (NYTimes) films as "Independence Day," "Godzilla," "The Day After Tomorrow," "The Patriot," "Universal Soldier" and "Eight-Legged Freaks." I came across an article on Emmerich and his design aesthetic in the New York Times' August 7, 2008 Home section.

The Times devoted TWO WHOLE PAGES and THIRTEEN PHOTOS to the redesign of Emmerich's townhouse in the "buttoned-up" Knightsbridge section of London. The article makes several things very clear. First, Emmerich is impulsive. That can be a good thing, right? A lot of creative people are impulsive. Second, he's eclectic. That can be a good thing, too. Third, he likes to shock people. O.K. Fourth, he's an icon omnivore: Mao Tse-Tung, Pope John Paul II, The Crucifixion, Barbie dolls, a Philippe Starck bar chair...it's all the same to him. If it looks good and shocks the neighbors, he's happy. Whatever...

But what about the miniaturized diorama tables in the living room? The ones that Emmerich commissioned from his movie prop department. The ones that depict, in the Times' words, "notorious events"? First, there's the tiny diorama of actor Hugh Grant propositioning a prostitute. Clever, right? I guess it's good for a laugh. What about the one with a miniaturized scene of JFK's assassination? Look! The "grassy knoll"! It's right there, under the Modernist coffee mug placed, just so, for the NY Times photographer to capture. Then there's the Tienanmen Square showdown between tank and student. Wow! That's clever! Don't forget the diorama that depicts "scenes of torture at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq." (NY Times) I guess Hugh Grant's tabloid-driven humiliation is as decorative and collectible as human rights abuses, political assassinations and torture.

Oh, come on! Don't get all outraged! The politics of history, the history of politics, the spectacle of celebrity, the news as spectacle... they're just a bunch of shiny baubles available to anyone with money! It's the design within reach of a callous few. Politics and abusive governments are just another scenario. History isn't real. It really doesn't mean anything! Look! Look at the Times photo of a laser-cut steel chair that Emmerich placed in his garden terrace. The one made by underage workers, uh, children, in Ghana. They're made from rusted Shell oil drums! They have laser-cut inscriptions on them, like "insurgents" and "infidels." Don't they look great next to the aqua blue skylights?

I hope the New York Times does another article when Emmerich adds a Darfur diorama to his collection. It would be soooooo cool to see miniature depictions of women and children fleeing from the Janjaweed!

A simple tribe of prehistoric hunters finds its way of life threatened when attacked by "four-legged demons." Homes are burned and people taken to lands unknown. The village's best hunters take off in pursuit, becoming, as the narrator says, hunters no longer, but warriors.

D'Leh, the lead character played by Steven Strait, is determined to rescue Evolet, the love of his life, along with the other hunters who were taken from the tribe, and without whom the people will starve. Thrust into the unasked-for role of Hero, D'Leh leads an army of many tribes to liberate thousands of captives--now slaves.

Visually, this is a decent film. CG effects are well blended with the action, and the cast acted out their roles in an acceptable manner. That said, this movie left a lot to be desired. The plot is based on a tired storyline with predictable turns: Hero's village is attacked; Hero must rescue people; Hero displays special ability or fits prophecy; Hero faces danger; Hero wins, with minimal losses.

One thing that annoyed me was that D'Leh seemed to care more about getting his girl back than anything else around him. He pulls it out in the end and even manages to care, but until that point, he is very one-dimensional.

Hollywood loves its beasties. The production team behind 10,000 B.C. is no exception, with massive prehistoric monstrosities, which was the most impressive part of the movie. Mastodons ("Mannak"), a saber-toothed tiger ("Spear Tooth"), and a herd of two-story carnivorous emu-like birds provide some action-oriented eye candy. Other than that, however, the entire movies comes off flat.

It's not horrible, but it's not great. If you have Netflix, go for it. Is it worth buying a copy? Not on my dime.

Synopsis

Prehistoric man's love is taken to be a slave for crazy Pharaoh in far off land. Prehistoric man searches for woman and fights great battles and prehistoric foes. There is lots of CGI and little dialogue. There is almost a battle at the end.

Review

I tried to write a synopsis but the smart part of my brain couldn't say much more than a sentence or two because that was all I could muster without criticizing any aspect of it. What I expect from a Roland Emmerich film is very little. I wager there will be superficial character's with a paper thin plot and mediocre dialogue that will offer an occasional laugh if delivered by a good enough actor. Most importantly there is excellent CGI and action sequences to distract from the simplistic story being told before you. Emmerich is one of the few directors who can pull this off and generally come up with a reasonable movie that's harmless enough to not mind that it's kind of dumb.

10,00 b.c. did not offer that kind of pay-off. It failed miserably at every attempt to make anything that resembled a successful movie, action story, epic adventure, or even *holds breath* good CGI. It was BORING. An hour and a half of nonsense. I literally fell asleep twice and this was after a cup of coffee. The character's are tedious and without any charismatic salvation. The lead actors best quality he can offer is nice abs and a handsome face. The journey is witless and without any anticipation to where the finale takes place. Once the great pyramid was unveiled it was such a let down nothing after it hardly mattered. The villains were not frightening and nor was the end result at all consequential to the tale being told.

The most disappointing aspect was the CGI. I had HUGE expectations here, and while some of the shots were pretty amazing, in general I felt like what I watched was separate from the actors in the story. Movies like Lord Of The Rings and the Weta team mastered the ability to take a fantasy or unknown world and make it feel real, like it was a possible existence in some universe. While this movie was a historic proven existence at one time, the shots, the land and the collaboration of it all came together as a movie set rather than a real world.

Ratings And Suggestions

I pretty much liked nothing about 10,000 b.c. and am thankful I didn't spend $10 at the movie theatre like I had initially planned because the trailers made it seem so epic and fun. It was epic already, it was a better parody of epic movies than "Epic Movie" actually was. I actually feel dumber for having watched it. I give it a half star out of four based on the cool Woolly Mammoths and the fact that Witless Protection still was a worse movie than this. But that's it.

Fumettone dal volto umano, fiction ecosensibile dotata di ironia politica, The Day After Tomorrow è un mega videogioco piuttosto divertente.

The Day After Tomorrow, di Roland Emmerich, Usa, 2004, 125 minuti

In 1994, Dr. Daniel Jackson (James Spader), an archaeologist, is tracked down by Catherine Lankford (Viveca Lindfors) and the US Air Force, for a job translating ancient hieroglyphs. Dr. Jackson arrives at a converted nuclear missile silo in Creek Mountain Colorado, where he is showed an Egyptian coverstone, unlike anything he’s ever seen. After translating hieroglyphs on the coverstone, naming the artifact found under the stone the “Stargate”, Jackson is given the task of translating the writing in the center of the stone, writing like has never been seen.

Around this time, Colonel Jack O’Neil (Kurt Russell) is placed in charge of the program, waiting for Jackson and Catherine to solve the mystery. Daniel finds that the writing in the coverstone isn’t really writing, but star constellations, arranged in an order outlining a map.

The six symbols (constellations) Jackson points out, are known to be on the device (Stargate), but a seventh symbol is needed. Dr. Jackson is shown the Stargate for the first time, where he correctly identifies the seventh symbol. Once the seventh symbol is locked, a glimmering swirl of a water like material comes shooting out, and spiraling back in. Conditions on the connected planet show to be livable, so General West (Leon Rippy) sends a team through the gate, after Jackson says he can open the gate on the other side.

The team, led by Colonel O’Neil and Dr. Jackson, come to a desert planet, Abydos. Daniel informs the team that he cannot deceiver the symbols on the DHD to send the team back home, which leads to a quest to find an order of alignment of symbols. Jackson is dragged through the desert by a huge domesticated beast, with O’Neil and two others in hot pursuit. After catching Jackson, they find a village of what appears to be ancient Egyptians. The team goes down and meets the people. Though unable to speak with them, Jackson befriends the lovely Sha’uri (Mili Avital), while O’Neil becomes idolized by Sha’uri’s brother, Skaara (Alexis Cruz).

Back at base camp, a flying pyramid shaped craft lands a top the pyramid where the rest of the team is staying. Base-camp is under attack with some members of the team killed, and others taken hostage. The attackers, are soldiers of the power Egyptian Son God, Ra (Jaye Davidson). From there, the team and village go on an adventure and war, that you will just have to watch the movie to see.

Ultimate Edition Bonus Features: Theatrical Cut and Director’s Cut. Featurette, Is There A Stargate? Audio commentary by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin. Production notes, cast and crew information, scene access. National and International theatrical trailers. Featurette, The Making of Stargate.

Thoughts: What can I say? This is easily one of my favorite movies of all time. It’s the mother of the highly successful television series, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. It has a great cast and great characters with Jackson (Spader) and O’Neil (Russell) really standing out. The movie features a really good story with some good action scenes and great special effects to go along with it. My personal favorite scene of the movie, is the first showing of Ra, cause he’s such a badass character.

I would highly suggest that everyone go pick up a copy of this, for the movie alone. But if you need extra motivation, it features two great featurette’s. One is a documentary called “Is There a Stargate?”, that shows evidence of alien existence throughout ancient art and culture. It also questions about the pyramids, some run way, and some Mayan stuff. I personally don’t’ believe nor care about aliens, but it’s still a well documented and insightful piece. And the other featurette is “The Making of Stargate”. This is filled with a lot of behind the scenes stuff, interviews with the cast and crew, and generally fun facts. Easily worth the twenty dollars, as it’s a great deal.

It being the July 4th weekend, I thought it only apropos to repost what was the our first blog entry

It being the July 4th weekend, I thought it only apropos to repost what was the our first blog entry. I just hope that, as we celebrate Independence Day, we can remember the lessons that Independence Day was trying to teach us. We will not go quietly into the night.

________

Despite being panned by critics, audiences flocked to see Roland Emmerich's newest opus, 10,000 BC, and I think I know why.

In 1996, Emmerich directed one of the finest action movies of all-time, Independence Day. More than just a movie, this film was a prognosticator of the future.

If only we had been listening.

Three different, very clear messages were placed in this movie. The first, seen here, is taken from the moment when Jeff Goldblum's character explains to the President the idea of "line-of-sight" and how satellites work.

Notice the drawing that Goldblum does, look familiar? Maybe that's because it looks awfully congruent to THIS!

Eerily similar no?
Now a random image in a movie is one thing, merely coincidence, but only moments later, after convincing the President that the time to leave is now, Goldblum and Pullman exit with others onboard Marine One. As they take off, Goldblum pulls out his handy mid-90's Mac Powerbook and looks at the countdown timer...

Now its starting to get a little bit more real, you're starting to feel that tingle up your spine...

Let's not forget what these "aliens" do in this movie. With a carefully orchestrated attack, the aliens destroy the Capitol Records building, the Empire State Building and the White House instantly and simultaneously.

It is only when all of the world joins together, putting aside its squabbles, putting aside religious and cultural differences to fight a common enemy that there is success. Goldblum and Will Smith ride deep into space and into the alien mothership armed with a nuclear bomb. They set it off and it causes the protective shields to come down off the ships floating around Earth. Earth responds with attacks, Randy Quaid saves the day, flies his F-15 into the most vulnerable part of the alien ship and destroys it almost instantly. But it doesn't just blow up, Roland Emmerich, that mad German throws one last message out there for those who know how to hear (see) it.

Who saves the world from aliens?

Of course! How could America (and the rest of the dirty world) defeat aliens? Because of Jesus (or Burning Man...)! It only makes sense, just ask the Mormons.

So what conclusions can we take from these messages?

The Masons are involved in nefarious things, don't believe me? Look here and here.

Roland Emmerich was able to predict exactly the date that a building would be destroyed by people alien to America.

If the President had listened in time, disaster could have been, if not completely avoided at least mitigated.

Jeff Goldblum always knows the right answers.

America can only be saved from aliens by Jesus

The answer to the immigration issue is Jesus

So, these images, none of which have been doctored or photoshopped in any manner prove conclusively that Independence Day warned us, in advance that the Masons were going to be involved in something that would destroy a building. Not only that, but the movie tells us the exact date. The movie showed us the dangers in having a president not listen to those who know. But did President Bush listen? When Jeff Goldblum arrives out of nowhere to warn his President, that president listens, and many--well...some--lives are saved. Ultimately though, the whole world is saved, because one man was able to convince the most powerful, and because the powerful were willing to listen. We didn't understand the message that Emmerich was presenting us in 1996. But it is not too late now!

The Day After Tomorrow showed us the effects that global warming will have upon us, and particularly New York City, are we heeding the message?

Independence Day warns us about the Masons, warns us about 9/11 and warns us continually about the dangers of aliens to America. These aliens expose their plan to Bill Pullman who realizes that "they're like locusts. They travel from planet to planet, their whole civilization. After they've consumed every natural resource they move on. And we're next." Sounds awfully familiar to the refrains of alien workers draining resources from the government and stealing those awesome avocado picking jobs that everyone wants so badly.

In this election season there is no doubt that not only should you see 10,000 BC, but if you care about America and the world, that you need to see this film. Take your kids, your friends, your parents, anyone whom you want to live.

This might be the most important film in the history of the world.

You've heard of Cinéma Verité...If only our leaders will listen to the modern day Nostradamus, Roland Emmerich.

Actress Amanda Peet (Studio 60) has been tapped to co-star alongside John Cusack in director Roland Emmerich's disaster film "2012", a project being described as an end-of-the-world epic.

Emmerich certainly has an over the top style but he has a clear love of the genre. I feel his "Independence Day" is one of the best popcorn entertainments produced in the last few decades. I can still remember seeing it at the 1400 seat Ziegfield Theater in NYC and having the Manhattan moviegoers roar with applause throughout. There have been very few summer movies that have given me that type of thrill since.

Remakes continue to be the hot trend in the business as a slew of them are in or going into production. Tony Scott (Crimson Tide) currently shooting a redo on the terrific 1973 thriller "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" which was one of the great NYC based films of all-time. Denzel Washington and John Travolta will take on the Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw parts.

A remake of the 1980 horror classic "Friday The 13th" is also filming which is being produced by Michael Bay's production wing, Platinum Dunes. The also have a redo of "The Birds" in the works which will star actress Naomi Watts. From my side of the fence, remakes are always an interesting challenge and some directors tackling the challenge put a pretty cool spin on the material but really memorable films are almost always a product of their time and place in history and trying to recapture that is a tough task indeed.

Jon Voight will go the TV route for the first time in 40 yrs when he plays the villain in the new season of Fox's 24. The popular show looks to have a bounce back season
creatively when it returns in Jan 2009. The network will first air a 2 hr TV movie this fall with the Jack Bauer storyline set in Africa which will set up the 2009 season.
