La pochette de l'album est due à Derek Riggs, où l'on peut voir Eddie jouant avec le diable.

Le titre fait référence au Nombre de la bête 666 qui symboliserait la bête de l'apocalypse selon st Jean (livre des Revelations Chapitre 13, verset 18). À cause de cette pochette et de son image, Iron Maiden fut fréquemment accusé d'être composé de satanistes, à tort.

Cet album est considéré par certains comme le meilleur album du groupe grâce à des morceaux comme : The Number of The Beast, Run To The Hills et Hallowed Be Thy Name. Il a été qualifié d'album classique par l'organisme Billboard en l'an 2000. The Number of The Beast se positionne au n° 1 du classement des ventes en Angleterre dès sa première semaine de vente pour y rester pendant 5 semaines.

Un DVD The Number of the Beast, sorti en 2001 retrace l'enregistrement de cet album.

The Number of the Beast est un des meilleurs albums de Iron Maiden, si çe n'est le meilleur. Avec des tubes comme Run to the Hills, Hallowed be thy Name et The Number of the Beast, il s'impose comme un classique du heavy metal. A écouter absolument.

Todos os dias enfrento o suplício de viajar até a Barra da Tijuca para trabalhar. Todos os dias meus olhos atentos testemunham "cenas cariocas". Surfistas na praia do Pepino, bonitinhas na Gávea, idosos felizes caminhando felizes no Jardim Botânico. Hoje eu vi a cena carioca que mais representa essa cidade.

Entre a Gávea e a São Conrado, há uma Rocinha no meio. Em frente a um dos acessos à favela havia um tanque de guerra, com uma metralhadora gigantesca apontando para o alto da favela. Pendurada à arma, uma fileira de balas de uns 15cm cada uma. Seu operador era um experiente soldado de 18 anos, que provavelmente nunca pisou antes no Rio de Janeiro.

Que tags usar para esse post? Opressão, violência, injustiça, covardia, canalhice, falência do estado, irracionalidade, matança, estupidez?

Aceito sugestões. Por enquanto entram todas essas.

Ya les habia comentado que todo el contenido de canciones del primer Rock Band puede ser usado sin ningun problema en ROCK BAND 2, ahora Harmonix anuncia como se realizara esta transferencia. Cuando el juego sea lanzado (en este caso para el XB360) se agregara un update que te permitira transferir tus archivos de personajes y canciones al RB2 . . . pero el chiste te costara $5 USD, es decir, 400 MS (Microsoft Points). Un detalle mas es que habra canciones que no podras transferir como "Enter Sandman" de Metallica, "Paranoid" de Black Sabbath, "Run to the Hills" de Iron Maiden y "Monsoon" de Tokio Hotel; esto debido a que aun no se han puesto de acuerdo con los pagos de las licencias.

Esta muy bien que el contenido sea compatible, asi no tendras que perder dinero por canciones que compraste para el primer titulo. Aunque todavia estoy esperando que se abran los mercados Europeo y Asiatico hacia America para comprar otras canciones.

Tidningarna verkar ha gillat gigget. Och jag tänker inte säga emot. Iron Maiden på Stadion är imponerande, inget snack. Ett band som jag började lyssna på när jag var något år äldre än familjens yngsting som fortfarande håller på är ju antingen patetiskt eller helproffsigt och slutsatsen efter onsdagskvällen kan bara bli en. 

Dickinson & Co kliver på scenen med en auktoritet som få band kan uppbåda och greppar publiken direkt. Det skall sägas direkt: jag är inget stort Maidenfan - bara en sån där snubbe som gillar att se riktigt bra liverock i alla former så ofta som möjligt. Men man fastnar ändå i bandets grepp. Låtarna är ju så starka; Yngstingen kan alla texter och de låtar som jag inte åtminstone kan refrängen till går att räkna på typ ena handens tumme.

Trots influensan är Bruce Dickinsons röst hur bra som helst, särskilt uppskattar jag hur detta lejon (fyller ju 50 år den 7 augusti) hanterar HELA registret, från de sonora bastonerna till metalwailandet. Gitarrsolona är överlägsna mycket av det man brukar bjudas på och mest imponeras jag av Murrays synbara enkelhet i ekvilibrismerna när fingrarna flyter som om gitarrhalsen var såpad, strängarna brann och banden glödde.

För en sällansupporter som Öberg d ä är naturligtvis de största hitsen bäst. Att få vråla med i "Ruuun Toooo theeee hiiiills" ger mig någonting. Men även mindre kända låtar, Rhyme of the ancient mariner, till exempel ger en hel del. Maiden har ett eget sound, kanske är det förklaringen. De försöker inte låta som en uppdaterad variant av Judas Priest eller AC/DC utan navigerar snärtigt förbi fallgroparna med några små irländska blinkningar, medeltida kvartsstaplingar eller bara något av sina fräcka och signaturmässiga tempobyten.

Har ingenting i musiken att klaga på. Ändå blir det inte riktigt full pott. Till framtida konserter vill jag höra mindre poänglöst mellansnack och dessutom uppleva en ljudanläggning som fungerar.

Kan Yngwie Malmsteen toppa det här i kväll, tro?

So, for the last few months, Iron Maiden have been touring the world on their own private jet, piloted by their very own lead vocalist Bruce Dickinson, bringing the highlights of 'Powerslave’, 'Somewhere In Time’ and 'Seventh Son’ to a stadium near you. Last night, 'Flight 666’ came to London for their only 2008 UK date, hence, lots of fans and a big venue.

UFO’s 'Doctor Doctor’ blasting through the PA heralded the beginning of the show and, just as they did twenty-plus years ago, they begun the set with 'Churchill’s Speech’, ushering in their ode to the Battle of Britain, 'Aces High’. Some of their best songs followed – '2 Minutes to Midnight’, 'Revelations’, 'The Trooper’, 'Wasted Years’. Not forgetting encoring with the fantastic 'Hallowed Be Thy Name’. But for me, the highlight was the epic 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner’ slickly followed by 'Powerslave’ – twenty minutes of uninterrupted heavy metal heaven that I for one have waited along time to hear live!

Maiden rock. Never mind how fit and nubile Sting may be, these 50-somethings bounce around the stage, jumping over pyrotechnics as if they were half their age. As a band they never fail to disappoint. The set was perfect, the crowd were united in their jubilation, and Eddie (their robotic mascot) made his usual cheeky appearance. So how come only the four stars? Well, I have a few little niggles to put to Mr Steve Harris (main song writer, bass player and fundamental lynchpin of the band). The sound was, for the most part bleedin’ awful! Any nuances and subtleties were completely lost in the muddy mush that sporadically poured out. Admittedly, I was about a third of the way back from the stage, but then so were the majority who’d paid fifty quid for a ticket. I have one other niggle, what ARE you doing Janick Gers (lead guitarist)? Stop spinning your guitar around your head and actually play the damn thing! Thank God for Adrian Smith and Dave Murray who remain pretty consistent. So, please Mr Harris, have a word with your crew and your lead guitarist. It’s just not on!

However, despite my gripes, Iron Maiden were on the whole fantastic. The poor sound quality meant that the solos weren’t always defined. Even Harris’ galloping bass disappeared in the mush at times. It was a shame, especially after much expectation. Hopefully, this will be the first and the last time they do the stadium thing in the UK, and with Bruce Dickinson briefly alluding to a new studio album in the pipeline, it looks like the beast 'aint gonna lie down and die just yet. Up the Irons!

Tambien ayer fui a jugar fut jaja. Despues de que mi equipo saliera campeon la temporada pasada, ahora estamos en partidos de pre-temprorada jajaja, el de este domingo fue el ultimo, ya la siguiente semana volveremos a empezar la temporada, ahora en una division mas arriba jaja. El punto es que en este partido me pusieron tantos putazos que sigo adolorido.......ni siquiera me podia mover a la hora de despertarme, hasta hace como 30 hora tome todas las fuerzas que tenia y me logre parar de mi cama, solo para volverme a sentar en el sillon a ver una peli jaja, pero como ya se acabo pues decidi venirme a la compu, pero ya en cualquier momento me voy a ir a recoger a mi hermanito de su escuela.

*Pff aun no c nada de wonderland jaja creo que me tendre que empezar a olvidar de ella.

Ayer estuve jugando ROckband y esta rolita me parecio excelente jaja

Anton Gustafsson, más conocido en la red como Anton Maiden, era un chico sueco fan de la mítica banda de heavy metal Iron Maiden. A raíz de su afición por la banda, empezó a grabarse con el micrófono de su ordenador mientras cantaba sobre MIDIs de canciones de Iron Maiden.

Desgraciadamente, el fuerte de Anton nunca fue precisamente cantar, y las canciones que iba grabando, y que empezó a subir a Internet, provocaban más risas(e incluso lágrimas) que aplausos. A pesar de ello, todos le decían que lo hacía realmente bien, y que siguiese grabando, que realmente les gustaba su voz... el fenómeno fue creciendo y creciendo, mientras Anton, inocentemente, creía todo aquéllo que le decían sobre sus grabaciones, hasta el punto de que una televisión del país llegó a hacerle una entrevista y un reportaje sobre éste.

Pero toda mentira se acaba descubriendo, y no fue hasta 2003 que Anton fue dandose cuenta de que la gente realmente se reía de él -e incluso un gran número de fans de la banda le insultaban de forma feroz-. Finalmente, víctima de su propio sueño, Anton se suicidó ese mismo año.

Desde Zurcheva me gustaría rendirle homenaje, ya que a pesar de tratarse de un pésimo vocalista, cosa no muy difícil de ver, Anton Maiden fue víctima de la mala fe de mucha gente, que no supieron decirle a tiempo una verdad de la que él permanecía totalmente ciego... y aquéllos que lo hicieron, le atacaron (y siguen haciendolo, aún muerto, diciendo que hizo bien al suicidarse...) de forma tan brutal que desencadenaron el terrible desenlace de esta tragicomedia.

De hecho, tras encontrar esta web, puede que me anime a hacerle un tributo xD Porque si, amigos,... no todos en este mundo cantamos bien, y yo soy un buen ejemplo de ello xDD (preguntadle a Endless xDDD)

Tra le altre cose che amo, ci sono le hit parade, le classifiche, vuoi perché ti danno un senso di ordine, vuoi perché ti fanno subito diventare curioso, o più sottilmente, perché ogni lista altro non è che una scelta e come ogni scelta scarta a priori delle cose, degli oggetti, delle idee.

Il riff di chitarra è la struttura base di un brano che spesso viene ad essere il marchio di fabbrica del brano stesso potremmo dire che sono il "ritornello che esegue il chitarrista", come naturalmente tutti sapevate.

Mi sono quindi messo a leggere, con la mia solita avidità, la lista e mi son detto: perché non fare un post?

25. Money For Nothing - Dire Straits (1984)

(Nota personale: il video è stato il primo a passare su MTV Europa. E forse è per questo che alcuni credono sia il primo video musicale della storia. I Dire Strais si formarono nel 1977. Componenti Mark Knopfler (chitarra, voce e autore di tutti i brani), David Knopfler (chitarra), John Illsley (basso) e Pick Withers (batteria). Come tutte le band, partenza in sordina, ma già nel 1980 arrivano al successo e toccano l'apice con "Brothers in Arms" che conteneva la canzone che avete sentito. Si sciolsero nel 1995.)

24. Eye Of The Tiger - Survivor (1982)

(Nota personale: canzone divenuta famosa per essere la colonna sonora del film Rocky IV. I Survivor sono una band americana formatasi nel 1977. Divennero famosi negli anni '80 grazie alle colonne sonore che composero. Tra di esse: "Eye of the tiger" (Rocky IV) e "The moment of Truth" (Karate kid - Per vincere domani). Sono ancora in attività anche se la band ha cambiato spesso componenti: 9 volte)

23. Voodoo Child - Jimi Hendrix (1967)

(Nota personale: Anche se non avete mai sentito nulla di Hendrix, lo conoscete. È un'icona della chitarra, e per un'icona non potevo che scegliere la sua esibizione a Woodstock. Hendrix nasce nel '42. Vita difficile: da piccolo affidato ad amici per problemi economici della famiglia che non passarono neanche quando il padre tornò dalla Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Iniziò a suonare la chitarra avvicinandosi alla musica blues grazie ai dischi del padre. Il successo inizia con la registrazione del blues di Billy Roberts "Hey Joe", potete sentirlo qui, fatto in modo "cattivo" alla Hendrix. Il sound che Hendrix elaborerà negli anni sarà fatto da quelle distorsioni di chitarra elettrica che diventeranno il suo marchio di fabbrica. L'abuso di droghe e alcool lo portarono ad un declino progressivo. Morì nel 1970. Memorabilia: bruciò una chitarra, una Fender Stratocaster, alla fine di una esibizione)

22. Paranoid - Black Sabbath (1970)

(Nota personale: I Black Sabbath sono un gruppo heavy metal britannico, formatosi nel 1968. Formazione storica: Ozzy Osbourne (voce), Tony Iommi (chitarra), Geezer Butler (basso) e Bill Ward (batteria). Come gruppo hanno fatto la storia del genere heavy metal contribuendone alla definizione e crescita. Una delle caratteristiche derivanti da loro è il lato "demoniaco" delle canzoni, così come il gesto delle corna molto usato tra gli amanti del genere, anche se la paternità è oggetto di contendere tra più cantanti e gruppi. Nella loro lunga storia, dal 1968 sino al 2000, hanno attraversato mode e stili arrivando a vendere qualcosa come 100 milioni di dischi. Memorabilia: sembra che durante un concerto Ozzy Osbourne abbia staccato con un morso la testa ad un pipistrello che qualcuno tirò sul palco: lo credeva un giocattolo di plastica)

(Nota personale: Gruppo statunitense nato nel 1983, hanno al loro attivo 16 album e hanno venduto più di 60 milioni di dischi. Il disco che li rese famosi è il quinto Blood Sugar Sex Magik che oltre a "Give it Away" conteneva anche "Under the Bridge". L'album di maggior successo è "Californication", 15 milioni di copie vendute grazie a pezzi come "Californication" e "Scar Tissue", qui. Memorabilia: Frusciante fa parte di questo gruppo.)

20. Born To Be Wild - Steppenwolf (1968 )

(Nota personale: Fondato nel 1967 a Toronto, il gruppo divenne famoso proprio grazie a "Born To Be Wild", che faceva parte della colonna sonora del film-mito "Easy Rider". Il gruppo si sciolse nel 1971 per riunirsi nel 1974 e si sciolse nuovamente nel '76. Poco dopo vennero a crearsi due gruppi, gli "Steppenwolf" senza il vocalist e fondatore John Kay, che a sua volta creò un'altra band "John Kay and Steppenwolf" che si è sciolta nel 2007)

19. 7 Nation Army - The White Stripes (2003)

(Nota personale: grazie ai mondiali il pezzo è divenuto stra famoso; loro un po' meno. The White Stripes sono un gruppo statunitense di Detrit, formatosi nel 1997, costituito da Jack White ed ex moglie Meg White. Al loro attivo hanno 6 album. "Elephant", quarto album della band, che contiene "Seven Nation Army" è considerato il lavoro più rappresentativo e quello che ha venduto il maggior numero di copie. Il loro sesto, uscito nel 2007, album si intitola Icky Thump.)

18. My Generation - The Who (1965)

(Nota personale: Gruppo rock londinese formatosi nel 1964. La fama inizio con "My Generation" e continuò per gli anni seguenti. Punto fondamentale della loro storia è la pubblicazione dell'album "Tommy" (1969): in cui le canzoni non erano semplicemente accostate una dopo l'altra ma formavano un continuo, era la prima opera rock di successo, storicamente preceduto da altri due lavori uno dei Pretty Things e uno dei Kinks. Da molti sono considerati una band da vedere assolutamente dal vivo e il loro sound ha influenzato o permesso la formazione di band quali i Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Clash, Blur, Oasis e altri. Memorabilia: erano usi distruggere gli strumenti a fine esibizione. Nel video scelto, se state attenti, ad un certo punto c'è una batteria che esplode!)

17. Highway to Hell - AC/DC (1979)

(Nota personale: Gli AC/DC sono un gruppo australiano nato nel 1973. Il loro stile punta molto sulla chitarra distorta e una voce stridente e aggressiva. Visivamente hanno una buona dose di ironia: visto il chitarrista-scolaretto? L'album che ci consegna un gruppo maturo con le sonorità che possiamo sentire ancora oggi è "Let There Be Rock" del 1977. Due anni dopo, 1979, esce l'album "Highway to Hell" che li conferma star mondiali. La canzone "Highway to hell" è compresa nella lista delle 500 canzoni che hanno formato il Rock'n'roll. La loro storia si può dividere in 2 momenti quando cantava Bon Scott (che avete visto nel video) e quella attuale con Brian Johnson. Brian prese la parte di Scott dopo la morte di quest'ultimo. Il suo primo lavoro con gli AC/DC è l'album "Back in Black": secondo come numero di copie vendute solo a Thriller di Micheal Jackson. Come tutti i gruppi longevi, la loro musica ha attraversato più di un stile anche se generalmente vengono etichettati come hard rock e precursori dello heavy metal.)

16. Wake Up - Rage Against The Machine (1992)

(Nota personale: gruppo rapcore statumotemse formatosi nel 1991 e scioltosi nel 2000. Si riformarono nel 2007. Le loro canzoni esprimono un impegno politico di sinistra e battaglie a favore delle minoranze. Lo dimostrano fin dai primi successi, o eccessi? Nel primo album che porta lo stesso nome della band era presente "Killing in the Name", qui, che ebbe notevole successo: una strofa della canzone era la frase "Fuck you I won't do what you tell me" ("Vaffanculo, non farò mai quello che mi chiedi"), ripetuta 16 volte. O ancora la loro esibizione di protesta contro il comitato USA per la censura delle canzoni: per 15 minuti si presentarono nudi sul palco e con la bocca tappata. O il concerto davanti alla borsa di Wall Street che fece chiudere il mercato per il troppo disagio creato! Al loro attivo ci sono solo 4 album: "Rage Against the Machine" nel 1992, "Evil Empire" nel 1996, "The Battle of Los Angeles" nel 1999 e "Renegades" nel 2000, quest'ultimo formato da sole cover.)

15. Immigrant Song - Led Zeppelin (1970)

(Nota personale: gruppo britannico nato nel 1968. Sono considerati la più importante formazione hard rock di tutti i tempi e la più importante per la storia del rock. Formazione: Jimmy Page (chitarra), Robert Plant (voce e armonica), John Paul Jones (basso e tastiere) e John Bonham (batteria). L'album più importante nella storia della band è il quarto. Non ha titolo e nella copertina sono riportati quattro simboli, uno per ogni componente della band. Da alcuni viene chiamato "Runes Album" ("Album delle rune") o ZoSo (dal simbolo scelto da Page. Secondo alcuni i simboli della copertina sono legati alla magia nera e al satanismo. Nello stesso album è contenuta la celebre Stairway to Heaven, qui tratta dal film documentario "The song remains the same", che contiene un backmasking satanico, idea rafforzata dai contatti di Page con Aleister Crowley. Famosi per il loro eccessi, distruzioni di camere d'albergo e consumo di droga si sono sciolti nel 1980 dopo la morte del batterista.)

13. Johnny Be Good - Chuck Berry (1958 )

(Nota personale: Charles Edward Anderson Berry , meglio conosciuto come Chuck Berry soprannominato anche "il primo ministro del rock and roll", classe 1926, è cantante, chitarrista e compositore americano. Viene considerato da molti l'inventore del rock. Dopo alcuni anni di riformatorio per una rapina, iniziò a dedicarsi alla musica e nel 1955 la canzone "Maybellene" vende oltre un milione di copie. Negli anni '50 pubblica canzoni come "Johnny Be Good", colonna sonora dell'omonimo film in cui appariva anche Berry, "Sweet Little Sixteen", qui, che arrivano nelle prime posizioni delle classifiche americane. Gli anni '60-'70 non furono molto fortunati. Cause: alcuni problemi con la legge, negli anni '60 per quello che potremmo definire sfruttamento e negli anni '70 per evasione fiscale e il cambio della casa produttrice. Nel 1979 sì esibì alla Casa Bianca su richiesta del presidente Jimmy Carter. Per tutti gli anni '80 si dedicò a concerti dal vivo facendo da 70 a 100 serate l'hanno; caratteristica: girava da solo e la band di accompagnamento la trovava sul posto. Attualmente si esibisce un Mercoledì al mese in un ristorante il Blueberry Hill di St. Louis. Memorabilia: il brano "Johnny Be Good" è in viaggio sulla Voyager I, la sua canzone "You Never Can Tell", qui, fa parte del film Pulp Fiction.)

12. Walk - Pantera (1992)

(Nota personale: gruppo statunitense originario del Texas fu fondato dai fratelli Dimebag Darrell (chitarra) e Vinnie Paul Abbott (batteria). I primi 4 dischi furono "autoprodotti" utilizzando la casa discografica fondata con l'aiuto del padre l'etichetta Metal Magic Records, e ottennero un buon successo, l'ultimo Power Metal, presentava un nuovo cantante Philip Anselmo. Ma è il quinto album Cowboys from Hell, che segna un definitivo salto di qualità, dovuto in parte anche al cambiamento di etichetta, e l'arrivo del successo mondiale che li porterà a suonare anche con AC/DC e Metallica. L'album successivo, Vulgar Display Of Power, che presentava un sound ancora più estremo, vendette un numero esorbitante di copie e conteneva la canzone simbolo del gruppo, quella che avete appena ascoltato, "Walk". Negli anni successivi iniziarono dei problemi nella band: il cantante, oltre che dedicare sempre più tempo a progetti in proprio, si drogava e rischiò di morire per overdose subito dopo un concerto. Si sciolsero nel 2000, il tour che stavano portando avanti in quell'anno fu interrotto a causa dei fatti dell'11 settembre e non appena tornati negli States Anselmo tornò a dedicarsi ai propri progetti. I fratelli Abbott fondarono un nuovo gruppo i Damageplan, che ebbe da subito un buon successo. Durante un concerto l' 8 dicembre 2004, lo stesso giorno dell'omicidio di John Lennon, un "fan" riuscì a salire sul palco e uccise il chitarrista Dimebag Darrell, e altre tre persone, con alcuni colpi di pistola.)

11. Run To The Hills - Iron Maiden (1982)

(Nota personale: Gruppo heavy metal britannico nato nel 1975, deve il proprio nome allo strumento di tortura conosciuto come verdine di Norimberga o vergine di ferro, chiamato in inglese iron maiden. Accusati di satanismo per il loro terzo album "The number of the Beast", qui il video preso sempre dal concerto Rock in Rio. La fama mondiale il gruppo la raggiunge con l'album "Poweslave" che li porterà in un tour di 11 mesi e 300 concerti. Le accuse di satanismo li accompagnarono anche in altri album come ad esempio "Seventh son of a Seventh son", di cui vi propongo "Can I play with Madness" qui, accuse rafforzate dal legame con il solito e sempre presente occultista Aleister Crowley. Gli album che seguirono non furono molto apprezzati dai fan a causa di un sound più intimista o comunque un po' meno aggressivo. Il rilancio iniziò nel 2000 con il ritorno ad un sound più vicino ai primi album grazie al rientro nella band di alcuni componenti. Attualmente sono impegnati in un tour. Memorabilia: Eddie the Head è un loro "simbolo" quel curioso zombie a cui fanno interpretare le copertine dei loro dischi e che riveste un ruolo importante nelle coreografie dei concerti. In "The number of the beast" il pezzo recitato all'inizio della canzone è letto da un imitatore di Vincent Price, e si tratta di un brano del libro dell' Apocalisse.)

(Note personali: gruppo hard & heavy statunitense, formatosi a Los Angeles nel 1985. Il loro primo album, "Appetite for Destruction", vendette oltre 25 milioni di copie in tutto il mondo e contiene "Welcome To The Jungle", "Paradise City" e "Sweet Child O Mine". Gli album che seguiro "Use your illusion 1", "Use your illusion 2" furono rilasciati parallelamente allo "Use your illusion tour" e segnano un cambiamento nelle sonorità della band che le rendono più accessibili come ad esempio "Don't cry", qui. Il loro ultimo album è "The spaghetti incident?" e contiene solo cover si brani degli anni settanta e ottanta.)

(Nota personale: I Metallica sono un gruppo trash metal formatosi a Los Angeles nel 1981. Il loro primo album "Kill 'em All" (1983) vende di 5 milioni di copie ed è considerato rea i più importanti del genere thrash metal con canzoni come "Hit the Lights",qui, "The Four Horsemen", qui. Successo bissato dall'album successivo "Ride the Lightning", che presentando delle sonorità melodiche ed introspettive e dei testi con elementi più ricercati vendette 8 milioni di copie. Nel 1986 esce "Master of puppets", qui la titletrack, che vende 12 milioni di copie. È considerato da alcuni il miglior lavoro della band e per molti è un punto cardine del metal che ha influenzato molti altri gruppi. Dopo un periodo di pausa, dovuta alla tragica morte del loro bassista, i Metallica pubblicano nel 1988 il loro album più tecnico "...And justice for all" che vendette 14 milioni di copie. Nel 1991 uscì l'album di maggior successo commerciale denominato "Black Album" che vende 23 milioni di copie. Il cambiamento di stile iniziato con "...And justice for all" portò i Metallica a produrre album dalle sonorità più accessibili ma che furono criticati da molti: la motivazione delle critiche vedeva il gruppo come più attento a far soldi che a suonare heavy metal.)

(Nota personale: formatosi nel 1975 è un gruppo hard e heavy metal britannico. I primi successi arrivarono nel 1979 con i dischi "Overkill", la cui titletrack, qui, è fondamentale per il genere heavy metal. e "Bomber". L'album "Ace of spades" lanciò la band in tutta Europa e grazie al successivo album live "No Sleep 'til Hammersmith" arrivò la fama a livello mondiale. Nonostante i successi avuti, solo nel 1990 una grande etichetta musicale si interessò al gruppo, il risultato fu il disco "1916", una riflessione sulla prima guerra mondiale e sui suoi massacri. Album che viene considerato uno dei migliori del gruppo ed ottenne anche la nomination ai Grammy Awards. Il matrimonio con questa etichetta durò poco e nel 1993 il gruppo pubblico in proprio il disco "Bastards": una definizione dell'ex casa produttrice. Nel 2004 esce "Inferno" disco che riportò la band al grande successo e che è uno dei più heavy metal della storia del gruppo. Memorabilia: da ricordare la "ö" nel nome della band che viene anche usata in alcuni titoli di loro canzoni.)

(Nota personale: il gruppo si forma nel 1970 a Boston e sono tra gli artisti che hanno influenzato la musica degli anni settanta nonché tra quelli di maggior successo: oltre 140 milioni di dischi venduti. Il successo arriva nel 1975 con l'album "Toys in the attic" che contiene canzoni come "Walk this way" e "Sweet emotion". Successo confermato con l'album successivo "Rocks" che è tra le fonti di ispirazione di vari artisti. Si dovrà attendere il 1987 per vedere ritornare gli Aerosmith ai massimi livelli, e lo fanno grazie a "Walk this way" questa volta cantata con il gruppo rap Run DMC. Negli anni '90 usciranno gli album "Get a grip" (1993) e "Nine Lives" (1997) entrambi ottimi lavori che portano la band verso nuove sonorità più pop. Mentre nel 1998 comporranno la colonna sonora del film Armageddon "I don't want to miss a thing", qui. Il loro ultimo studio album risale al 2004 "Honkin' on Bobo" e rappresenta un ritorno al blues rock dei primi tempi. Memorabilia: durante il tour del disco "Rock in a Hard place" Steven Tyler collassò sul palco.)

(Nota personale: gruppo statunitense formatosi nel 1987 appartenenti al genere grunge. Il successo mondiale arriva con l'album del 1991 "Nevermind" che contiene pezzi come "Smells like teen spirit", "Come as you are", qui, e "Lithium", qui. L'album succesivo, 1992, "Incesticide" non incontra un molto favore nel pubblico, colpa il sound troppo duro e diverso da quello di "Nevermind" e più vicino al loro album d'esordio "Bleach". "In utero" è il terzo album con sonorità ancora più vicine a quelle di "Bleach" con pezzi forti come la molto criticata "Rape me" ("Violentami"), qui, mentre l'ultimo album della band è "MTV Unplugged in New York" in cui si esibiscono in un concerto acustico. Da ricordare la cover della canzone di David Bowie "The man who sold the world", qui. La fine della band coincide con la morte di Cobain avvenuta nell'aprile del 1994: suicidio, ma per alcuni non andò così.)

1. Smoke On The Water - Deep Purple (1973)

(Nota personale: sono un gruppo britannico nato nel 1968 dalla fusione di due band per volere dei rispettivi manager. Il gruppo è considerato tra i più influenti degli anni 70, e pionieri con i Led Zeppelin e i Black Sabbath dell'hard rock e dell'heavy metal. La consacrazione come band mondiale avviene nel 1972 con l'album "Machine Head" di cui fa parte anche "Smoke on the water". A seguito della tournée in Giappone esce l'album "Made in Japan" annoverato tra le pietre miliari della storia dell'hard rock. Nel 1973 esce "Who do we think we are", che segnò la fine della band nella sua formazione originale. La definitiva separazione si ebbe nel 1975 durante una tournée il chitarrista Tommy Bolin, ebbe una semiparalisi al braccio sinistro a causa di una iniezione di eroina. Il tour continuò tra gravi difficoltà ed al concerto di Liverpool il cantante David Coverdale, abbandonò il palco furibondo. Bolin morì pochi mesi dopo. La band si riformò solo nel 1984 e pubblicarono l'album "Perfect Strangers" e fecero un tour mondiale. Attualmente ancora in attività il loro ultimo album risale al 2005 "Rapture of the deep". Su richiesta di Bob Geldof parteciparono alla giornata Live 8. Memorabilia: il pezzo "Smoke on the water" trae ispirazione dall'incendio che distrusse tutta l'attrezzatura di Frank Zappa, che con il suo gruppo si esibiva al casinò della città di Montreaux, dove erano presenti anche i Deep Pourple per la registrazione di "Machine Head". Durante il concerto al "Nassau Coliseum" di Long Island del 1976, il batterista dei Led Zeppelin si appropriò di un microfono salì sul palco e interruppe il concerto per annunciare l'uscita di un nuovo album dei Led Zeppelin. "Somewhere Back In Time - The Best of: 1980 - 1989" is a compilation by Iron Maiden, which consist of songs from their first 7 albums. it's a good start-off if you're new to this particular British heavy metal band.

I began to listen to them which was also one of their compilation album called, "Edward the Great". 'The Trooper' is an awesome song, followed by 'Run to the Hills' and 'Phantom of the Opera'.

Recuerdo que la semana que se puso a la venta en el 85, estaba en la cama, enfermo con unas anginas o algo así. Por casualidad, en un momento se me ocurrió poner la radio en lugar del walkman y en los 40 Principales (sí, has leído bien) anunciaban Running Free como adelanto de ese disco. ¡Qué versión! Qué emoción! Compré enseguida el vinilo y lo he casi quemado de tanto escucharlo durante estos años (bueno, hace unos años compre una edición en CD que incluía los mismos temas que el vinilo, con los temas del Hammersmith también); como complemente visual mi viejo VHS ha sido vital, pero ya no da para más, aunque hacía años que no lo visionaba. En fin, que este genio del marqueting que es Steve Harris, sabe qué dar a los fans. La intro con las palabras de Churchill y el inicio con Aces High ya dan pistas de que estamos ante el mejor doble álbum en vivo de la historia, con permiso del Made in Japan de Deep Purple. Pero es que el DVD trae una actuación emblemática que permanecía semioculta durante años: su actuación en el Rock in Rio 1985 ante más de 300.000 personas y justo antes de Queen. Hacía años que quería ver esto, casi desde su celebración, tras leer en aquella época en algun Heavy Rock especial que Bruce Dickinson se dio un golpe en la cara con la guitarra en aquella actuación pero aguantó el tipo. Y cierto, es durante Relevations, en la que el propio Bruce saca la guitarra para rascar un breve arpegio y como no para de mover el mástil se pega un ostia en la ceja; sale corriendo tras el escenario y al poco reaparece ensangrentado pero sigue como si nada. De la grabación, decir que estaba algo dañada y lo que se ha editado es lo que único que se ha podido salvar (se nota incluso algun corte al final de Run to The Hills) pero el documento es un hallazgo .

También merece la pena unos minutos de su paso por Texas en la gira de Piece of Mind, con footage, tomas en vivo de Flight of Icarus y 22 Acacia Avenue, y una breve entrevista con Dickinson y Harris en la que vienen a decir que su éxito es porque ellos son fans del rock, como su audiencia, y que están en esto para tocar rock duro y vestir de rockeros, nada que ver con el punk ni el new wave. Huelga decir que a Steve Harris se le entiende si subtitulas, porque habla muy rápido y tiene ese acento cockney tan característico y tan jodido para quien no domine la lengua de Shakespeare.

Y mientra tanto, sigue el Somewhere Back in Time Tour, durante el cual el grupo se en su propio avión pilotado por el propio Bruce Dickinson. Vamos, que Maiden ya son definitivamente tan grandes como Led Zeppelin. Hace unos días pasó el tour por Costa Rica y un fan se acercó hasta el aeropuerto a filmar el aterrizaje y está el tio alucinado (no quiero imaginar lo que debe ser ir dentro con la banda)

If you want an exhaustive cornucopia of details regarding the war in Burma, including the name of every man who fought, the pedigree and lineage of his second cousin’s dog and how many cubic metres of rotting trench foot you can fit on a makeshift runway, this is the book for you.  It is called ‘Burma, The Forgotten War’, by Jon Latimer.  I'm sure he's a very nice man (damning with faint praise), but he makes me seem short and to the point.  Short I may be, but I've never been to the point in my life.

Not only was it boring, but every time I read his name on the cover it reminded me of Joyce Grenfell and her monologues as ‘Lumpy Latimer’, so I found it rather hard to take seriously, what with that and the killer narcoleptic qualities it possessed. I feel the title is a self-fulfilling prophecy, because despite having read nearly four hundred and fifty pages of material, I can recall very little information at all.  Let’s see: 

·        The Japanese were quite horrible to people (I know this is true because I have also had occasion to watch Tenko when there was nothing else on).

·        It rained a lot and everything got mouldy within a nanosecond of being waved at anything vaguely Burmese.

·        The food was terrible and people actively chose to eat boiled grass (Blee!  I’d have gone postal after about six hours.  The war would have been over a lot quicker if I’d have been there, mouldy and cake deprived).

·        Burma is about the size of France (this is pretty amazing as I thought it was about the size of Basingstoke.  I am completely rubbish at geography).

·        We won, eventually and nobody is quite sure how.

·        What we are quite sure of is that it really wasn’t worth the effort, and since then things have gone from bad to worse.  Hoorah!

·        The roads in Burma were so bad that they made artificial ones using hessian covered in tar.   

Now this is interesting.  In the early Seventies, my mum and dad’s friends, who were very fashionable and cutting edge (They were hardly Keith Richards, but if you had a Kenwood Mixer in 1972 you were considered a bit forward in Leicester), had decorated their entire house from the very new and extremely groovy Habitat catalogue (I would like to add that this is the only furniture they ever bought.  They had one burst of grooviness and then sat on their laurels.  Luckily this furniture is now fashionably retro, and they’re experiencing somewhat of a home furnishings revival). 

This included their idea of wallpapering their living room with scarlet hessian. Now, with hindsight, this was a truly terrible idea.  However, we must be compassionate.  It was the early Seventies, the music scene had descended into such travesties as ‘I’ve Got a Brand New Combine Harvester’ by those gods of rock The Wurzels, and The Generation Game was prime time, cutting edge, must see television.  To say that times were hard and things were rough was probably an understatement: 

Groovy Man: ‘Shall we watch Saturday Night at the London Palladium’? 

Groovy Lady: ‘Well, I don’t know.  The Bonzo Dog Doodah Band is having a retrospective on Radio 2.’ 

Groovy Man: ‘I know.  Let’s crack open a bottle of Mateus Rose, stick the Carpenters on the Hi-Fi, roll up our loon pants and decorate the living room with some hand woven materials!’ 

Groovy Lady: ‘Wow! You’re just so groovy.  I’ll kick off my platforms.  You put your lustrous locks in a hair net and I’ll mix us a bucket of wallpaper paste.  Party on!’ 

So, this is what happened.  Apparently hessian is an absolute nightmare when it gets wet.  I didn’t know that.  I do know that dry hessian is an absolute nightmare, as one of my evil needlework teachers who was a nun with no Christian charity in her soul, decided that what every girl needed was a hessian cushion, appliquéd with felt flowers and backed with shiny nylon. 

Mine was brown hessian, with orange and blue flowers on a vomit yellow nylon backing. Not only that but we had rusty needles to sew it with, and all the cotton (for some bizarre reason, probably as a punishment for our evil ways) was waxed.  It was a challenge to stop the material slithering out of your hot, sweaty grip every thirty seconds before you’d even got the needle in.  It was even more of a challenge not to blow yourself to smithereens because of the friction caused by the metal sliding through all that flammable material.  It’s a wonder a) that I finished the cushion at all (although it was heavily blood stained) and b) that I had any eyebrows left at all. 

Our lessons took place in a disused chapel on the grounds of the convent, and what with that and the primitive tools it was like going back to the work house. Particularly the part where she would swish through the rows of students and strike you round the head with the back of her hand if your stitches were wonky.  I had a permanently dented head as well as tetanus infested fingers. It was, I recall, a joyous period in my life, and deeply instrumental in my loathing of the arts of needlework even now. 

Anyway, back to the wet hessian.  As it gets wet it expands exponentially and takes on a life of its own.  You start out with a metre square and end up with enough to make a marquee that seats two hundred, but less well behaved.  This would be good except for the fact that it has holes in it, and the weave gets more and more relaxed, and dare I say it, groovy.  It flops and lollops around your room, leaving dollops of hairy glue on your soft furnishings and only adhering to the things you absolutely don’t want it to (like your punch bowl with matching cups, and your wood effect, G Plan furniture). 

Consequently, what looked charming in whatever the Seventies version of Elle Decoration was, ends up in a small house in the East Midlands, looking like you’ve been trying to stick your father’s fifth best string vest to the wall for a bet. 

The other problem is that it is not very good at holding dye, being quite porous, and let’s face it, rubbish.  Hessian was never going to take off as one of the super fabrics of the millennium now was it?  The medieval peasants had the right idea when they abandoned it in the fourteen hundreds for cotton, and stuck to hessian for potato sacks.  It’s rough, it’s itchy, it’s difficult to manage and it smells pretty horrible when it’s dry.  When it’s wet, it takes on the malodorous properties of a long dead dog in a ditch full of brackish water.  Roger Moore as Mr. Bond was never going to clamber out of the sea clad only in a fetching pair of brown hessian bathing trunks now was he? 

As the groovy pair had chosen scarlet as their colour of the season, this added an extra dimension of stress to their already escalating problems.  The scarlet dye was coming off pink over everything it touched, including their skin.  Naturally as the weave on the material stretched it was creating a lovely latticework effect on any exposed skin, which made them look rather like they’d been sunbathing under an upturned scampi in a basket. 

Apparently it took days to wash off, and they were excommunicated from the Bridge Club until things had resumed a more normal footing. As if this wasn’t shame enough, they battled long and hard with the wall and finally got it finished by the light of a candle in a wicker Chianti bottle at about three in the morning.  It didn’t look too bad.  Not as bad as they did anyway.  As it dried in the night however, it shrank back to its original size and they woke up to something that looked like a newborn Shreddie stuck to a vast expanse of glue and hair-ridden wall.  If only they’d stuck to flock wallpaper like everyone else. 

Anyway.  I was thinking about these airstrips in Burma, and how wet it was out there, and wondering how they managed to control them.  I mean, they must have been easy to transport originally, as what when dry looks like something out of the carpet sample book, expands to four hundred miles in length during the average rain storm.   However, what happened when the rainy season finished and things started to heat up?  Perhaps as the hessian started to contract they were able to harness its shrinkability by using it to help launch any recalcitrant aircraft using the slingshot principle. i.e. as the runway slid by, shrinking faster than a man’s vitals at the North Pole, the friction and uplift would propel the plane into the sky.  Now that is interesting.  Sadly, LL doesn’t really cover this in his book, exhaustive and exhausting though it is. 

I think we have also exhausted the world of hessian for the time being, although we may well have occasion to come back to it at a later date if it suddenly becomes wildly fashionable once more.  Unlikely I know, but then who thought rah rah skirts and diamante would ever make a resurgence? 

I did have a rather fetching hot pink rah rah skirt the first time around.  I think this was acceptable, because as Calvin Harris so rightly says, it was the Eighties.  Also, I was ten, and it is well known that most ten year olds have an execrable taste in clothing regardless of which decade they’re in. 

Tallulah is quite a bit better this morning, thank goodness.  Now the spots have come out, she seems to be improving in leaps and bounds.  I know she is feeling better because she has spent quite a lot of her time telling everyone off in a loud shouty voice: ‘YOU. ARE. VERY. DISOBEANIENT!’  Luckily, I am in favour (I should think so, given the number of man hours sacrificed in her honour this week).  She has just given me a picture of a cake butterfly, which is very lovely indeed, and which I shall treasure forever, or until the next time I pass a dustbin when she is not keeping her eye on me, whichever comes first. 

As it is a rainy, cold Saturday in December and town is heaving with hysterical people buying cream filled chocolate boobs and novelty Simpsons’ underpants in a berserker type way we have decided to have a day at home, hiding out.  It can, on days like these be tricky to find things to amuse the children.  Jason and I would find endless amusement in a plumped up duvet, a packet of Hobnobs, and an everlasting kettle, but we are simple foIk of the peasant order.  The children are highly strung and ‘artistic’ which means finding things for them to do so that they don’t rearrange the furniture into a well known phrase or saying using a bread knife and a packet of cocktail sticks. 

I must say, as an aside, that there is actually such a thing as an everlasting kettle, although I’m not sure that this is what they are actually called.  I saw one on Property Ladder with Sarah 'booby' Beeney.  This bloke just had a little spigot thing on his counter-top and when you pressed it, endless supplies of boiling water came out.  Winner!  I thought it was the highlight of his entire house, the rest of which looked a bit like an advert for Barrett Homes.  Which when you consider it was a chapel conversion which was supposed to have ‘bags of character charm’, was a bit depressing. 

My gran would have loved that spigot thing.  She was a tea fiend (like an opium fiend, but less tiring and expensive).  She got quite poorly in her latter years and didn’t get about much, which annoyed her intensely, as she could no longer do Bruce Lee impressions or go in a hot air balloon (one of her ambitions).  She could have had the tea making machine wired into her arm chair, which is pretty much where she lived for about six years. It would have cheered her up immensely, as long as she didn't fill her sleeve with boiling water.

She would sleep all day and watch television all night.  Her very best favourites were TJ Hooker in German, and Diagnosis Murder in English.  I have no idea why.  Probably best not to ask.  She didn’t speak German, so perhaps William Shatner is more exciting in a different language.  She did once teach Tilly to say ‘Stop or I’ll shoot!’ in German though, which may yet come in handy. 

She would drink endless cups of tea and smoke roll ups which she did herself (except when she broke her wrist and had to pay Tom to do them for her.  I have no idea what the going rate for a roll up was, but as he did many of them, I expect he accrued quite a nest egg).  She was also very picky about what she ate, and for a long time existed on fresh tomatoes and jelly and double cream.  She once told me she didn’t really like the jelly much, it was more of an excuse so that she could have the cream! 

It just goes to prove that all this guff about needing a prolific number of vitamins and minerals in your daily diet is a load of old rubbish, as she lived like that for quite some years, except for the time she broke out into Linda McCartney veggie lasagne and garlic bread (a passing phase). 

Anyway, back to amusing the children.  Jason has found a stash of television theme tunes somewhere in the bowels of his computer and is currently being DJ Wubblya, rocking the crowd at the Glenfield Discorama hibernating.  Tallulah has just amazed us all with an interpretive dance to the magic of the Benny Hill theme tune which was quite surreal.  Tilly is now trying to dance to a speeded up version of the Doctor Who tune.  It’s a big jungletastic, and I’m afraid that she might have a stroke if she doesn’t slow down a bit.  Still, she’s young and bendy and she doesn’t want me to join in.  Who knows, it might even wear her out.  Unlikely, but it’s worth a shot. 

We have now slowed down so that we can truly appreciate the glory of ‘The Fall Guy’ as sung by Mr. Lee Majors himself.  I used to think he was lovely, and I desperately wanted to have a bath on our porch, just like he did.  Mum pointed out that he lived in California, which with its balmy climes is much more conducive to the idea of bathing outdoors.  To prove a point she let me have the paddling pool on the back patio one March and the whole, ‘let’s all bathe outdoors thing’ was soon shelved. 

The other delight that Jason has introduced into the house this week is the Guitar Hero III game for the Nintendo Wii.  It comes with a guitar into which you slot your Wii control, so that you can actually be a mad axe guitar hero.  I have to say that for those of you contemplating buying this item, this is what hell will be like if I ever have the misfortune to go there. 

Currently we have two levels of ability in the house, skilled and unskilled.  I don’t know which is worse. The more skilled you get, the more rockin’ the tunes become and the more Death Metal becomes a part of your daily tune intake. 

Death metal is an acquired taste, one usually acquired by long haired, washing impaired, teenage boys with no hope of getting a girlfriend who need something to fill the howling wilderness years of loneliness and tortured soul pain type thing.  I am the first one to say that it has its place.  I am also the first one to say that I am coming to the realisation that its place is not in my living room wielding an ‘axe’. 

Now, as a girl who never thrilled at the idea of having my arms and legs mangled off in a mosh pit whilst bleeding through the ears, I fail miserably to delight in listening to such moving and heartfelt lyrics as; ‘I’m going to eat your dead baby you f****in’ mother f****er.’  This was as true of me at fifteen as it is at thirty-five.  There are some areas where I have become more open minded and liberal, and there are others where I remain stubbornly reactionary.  This is one of them. 

Jason is at this skilled end of the spectrum, as he was indeed one of those boys and has a long affinity with Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Slayer.  I do know that Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden is an olympic standard fencer, which is very impressive.  I just wish Jason was as keen on learning fencing as he is on learning the lyrics of 'Run to the Hills'.  At least it would be a lot quieter.

Jason has in many ways,resolutely outgrown that time in his life, but is not, it seems, averse to a little trip down memory lane, with his car windows down and the stereo turned all the way up to eleven.  This is proving difficult to live with, and it is only because I love him dearly that I haven’t confiscated his axe, clipped him soundly round the ear and told him to wash his hair and get a job. 

Tilly on the other hand, is at the other end of the spectrum and falls into the woefully unskilled section of our chart.  Sadly for me, she is also enthusiastic about improving, so must practice a lot, several times a day, at full volume. 

I am not a fan of computer games, because of their repetitive nature, and the fact that they have annoying, electronic music which usually only lasts about four bars before it repeats itself.  The children insist on having the sound on, and you find that your day is punctuated by this grindingly inane, theme music, which you then catch yourself singing in the shower and which runs through your mind like a lab rat in a maze when you’re trying to nod off so that you can have dreams about jazz divas. 

I usually only allow them to play games if they turn the sound off, which saves me from going mentalist. Unfortunately, the whole point of this game is that the sound must be on, and loud, at all times, whether you like it or not.  The premise of the game for those of you who don’t know, is that you are allocated a ‘rock star’ alter ego, which plays a series of gigs in which you are expected to play lead guitar.  You are able to choose songs to match your ability (sadly not Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, which would at least be soothing), which you then use your Wii ‘guitar’ to play, strumming and matching the notes to coloured keys on the neck of the guitar. 

The problem is that if you hit a wrong note, it plays a noise like a spanner being thrown through a greenhouse window.  There is a different but equally delightful noise for each wrong note you play.  It is pretty bad.  Tilly is a terrible player (at the moment), and consequently sounds like someone building a shed, when what she is actually hoping for is to sound more like Slash from Guns ‘n’ Roses. 

Now only Slash’s mother can vouch for the fact that Slash too sounded like someone building a shed when he was starting out on his path to Rock God-dem.  I would ask her, but she’s probably too deaf to respond.  I am now dreaming with fondness of last week when my ears were bunged up.  Sadly for me, my hearing is now pretty good, and I am spared none of the anguish. 

Tilly is regularly booed off stage (which is what happens if you get a certain percentage of notes wrong), and yet this spurs her on to greater efforts.  I feel that I must be supportive, as I don’t want to blight her future as a possible mega star (and all the pairs of Christian Louboutin’s she will buy me when this time comes, although by then I shall probably be happy with Dr. Scholls).  It is difficult however, and after eight goes at some puerile tune for which we have Pat Benatar to blame, curse the woman, I did make her turn it off. 

These experiences have only stiffened my resolve that Tilly will only have trumpet lessons in my house if I am a) killed in a freak accident, b) rendered completely deaf by Guitar Hero III or c) sent totally insane by Guitar Hero III.  Her dad can let her practice at his house. It is one of the many uses of an ex-husband with a house of his own and should be utilised to the max.
