[McThizzface]

Disclaimer:
I know I'm in grad school right now and have been spending the majority of my time figuring out how to write in a way that will not be ignored by academics/people with power and influence (aka forget you grew up in Richmond and learned how to speak for the first 18 years of your life), but I'ma use this blog as a vehicle for my honest expression in my most honest of muhf*ckin voices...(YEE, muhf*cka! YEE!).

Good f*ckin' lord, blud. I am truly not sure what to make of everything going on right now in Amerika. Sh*t really seems to be on its way to (or past) hitting the fan. McCain and Palin never cease to amaze me in the ways that they will hurl every insult and negative accusation at Obama in their candidacy, but when face to face with Biden and Obama in debates, never bring these things (ie: Bill Ayers) up! Until November the 4th, its gonna get pretty McNasty out here, sun. Yeesh.

The homie J-Bloom put me onto this vid of greatest-rapper-of-all-time-who-you-always-forget-to-put-in-your-greatest-rapper-of-all-time-lists, Scarface of Facemob, the Ghetto Boys and Houston, (don't mess with)Texas. Art = Honest Expression = Art.

[How douchebaggy does that hat look on anybody BUT scarface?]

Slavename & Senbei - FreeDumb

Senator John McCain's my name and aint a damn thing changed / a veteran whose better than Osam-OBam-Oh what's his name? Hussein's his name / insane's his game, to change is lame, I braved the rain: / tortured by the GOOKs and the Vietcong / abortions mothers choose and I think that's f*cking wrong / I'll sacrifice a million children if I have to / to cap the lives of Iraqi fighters - permamnent like tattoos / You wanna live on welfare? While Cubans merc you? / Then vote to make our healthcare universal / I'm the man to be in charge when tragedy strikes 'cause I was born when Blacks and womyn didn't have any rights / I have to be right. / I'm old, I'm white, a man and rich as devil's food / The bass too loud! / please make me proud and turn up all the treble fool! / register and choose McCain to vote for the chance / to stay the course and say in chorus: / "no sir, we cant!"

To further my point here as far as the insanity of McCain's hinjinx, I feel it necessary to post my broshot Adrizzle of iLL-Literacy's vlog about the 2nd Presidential debate. Get 'em boy!

[Gotta love (to hate) that good 'ole fashioned U.S.A. racism!]

I know I spend a lot of time on this blog venting about what's wrong with where I live, but the reason I do so is because I KNOW it can be so much f*cking better than this. I've seen the amazing human capacity in my newborn baby nephews and nieces, my wife, parents and brother and in the resilience of my sisters and brothers of all different walks of marginalized life. I am hopeful for celebration on November 4th but have not resigned myself to being setup for disappointment again. What I mean by this is that while I am thinking constantly about the positive thoughts and energy I believe people will need to shine outward for McCain to be beaten, I also fully subscribe to preparing for the worst. This means creating plans of action to protect ourselves/loved ones in the case that McCain/Palin wins and tries to keep gay people from marrying, building more prisons, taking away the right to choose and funding many more wars in many more places around the world.

Yes We Can (make sure we aren't all assed-the-f*ck-out if Michelle isn't our First Lady come November)!

'Til November my people: stay strong and don't drop your guard, but also don't be scurred to turn to your neighbor and just "hug-it-out."

The Hip-Hop Honors aired last night (10/6/08) and on a scale of 1-10 we gave it about a 7. Honoree

The Hip-Hop Honors aired last night (10/6/08) and on a scale of 1-10 we gave it about a 7. Honorees included Cypress Hill, Too Short, Slick Rick, Naughty By Nature, Isaac Hayes and De La Soul.

Slick Rick's segment was off the hook, MC Lyte did over the "Ruler's Back" Ghostface and Biz Markie connected for "La di Da Di" Spliff Star and Busta Rhymes rocking an eye patch covered "The Show" Dana Dane and Fabolous performed "Hey Young World." The Ruler even found time to perform his classic "Children's Story" equipped with back up dancers toting pajama's and even a bed. (Ya'll tucked in?)

De La Soul's ceremony was equally dope, the introduction was provided by actors Joy Bryant and Michael Rappaport who even admitted that he named his son after Maceo. Q-tip set it off performing his verse on "Roller Skating Jam Saturday," and Estelle singing the hook, next up was Cee-Lo with his rendition of "Potholes on My Lawn" followed by the Mighty Mos Def and Chuck D of Public Enemy with "Stakes Is High." Prince Paul kept it moving behind the wheels, while EPMD finished up the dedication with "Ego Trip" and then to cap it off De La performed "Me, Myself, and I" and "Buddy" with another appearence from Q-tip to recite his verse on Buddy.

Isaac Hayes was honored by Scarface performing the Geto Boys Classic "Minds Playing Tricks on Me" which borrowed from "Hung Up on My Baby" Estelle singing Mary J. Blige "I Love You" which samples "Ikes Mood" then Cee-lo sang Isaac's own "Look of Love" and Mos Def performed "Warning" by Notorious B.I.G. which samples "Walk on by" off of Hot Buttered Soul.

Too Short's dedication began with Luke Campbell proclaiming how good Short Dawg said the word bitch, Beeyaatch! Lil' John, Kid Rock and Bun B went over a few Too Short Tracks, then Scarface came out and performed "The Ghetto" The Pimp himself came out to the beat of "Gettin It" and with Face they finished Too Shorts dedication off right.

Naughty By Nature was the Final dedication of the evening. Eve and Tracy Morgan did their Introduction with New Jersey's own Queen Latifah on the help out. Wyclef began it by playing "No Woman no cry" by Bob Marley which transitioned nicely into "Ghetto Bastard" here Juelz Santana got twisted up in Treach's tricky wordplay and couldn't keep up with the flow but still did his thing no doubt. "Arm me with Harmony" was uttered by Big Boi from Outkast then it was on, Sir Luscious Leftfoot recovered Naughty's dedication nicely and capped it off with a nice lil' freestyle with Fatha Clef on the Geetar at the end. Naughty By Nature shut it down coming out to "Uptown Anthem" and "Hip-Hop Hooray" to close the show off nicely and leave me wanting a naughty by nature T-shirt

Welcome back to the new, improved Detholz! Mp3 Blog, Mark II! I'm no longer going to list episodes in Roman numerals-- the math was starting to get too challenging for my pea-brain.

Thanks to all of you who have taken up the gauntlet of the DETHOLZ! BLOG ROLL-UP! (see below for rules) You will be the first to receive piping hot advance copies of Detholz! second album of deconstructed pop songs direct from the dentist's office : Jukebox of the Dead II : You : The Power of You.

Three cheers to those of you who dove immediately into the fray, swords swinging! Here are the links to our winners' blogs thus far:

http://kebabdylan.wordpress.com/2008/10/06/ziggy-2000/

http://johnsorc.wordpress.com/

http://baconfresh.wordpress.com/

The Roll-Up is far from over, however. Seize this opportunity to gird up your blog battle-ax and take your place among the greats in Detholz! Cyber-Valhalla -- see the Blogroll to the right for these newly added champions!

As we progress into the second week of the Countdown to Jukebox of the Dead IX (if you're new, see previous post for explanation), I give you the heart and soul of this year's show :

SCARFACE (PUSH IT TO THE LIMIT)

Penned by the Italian master of 80's montage music, Giorgio Moroder, and originally performed by one-hit wonder, Paul Engemann, for the Brian DePalma classic, Scarface, it is my personal favorite in the "80's montage" genre. In fact, the entire score to Scarface is, in my estimation, the quintessential 80's synth score.

(I should say Engemann was a TWO-hit wonder : he scored a Top Ten hit with the single "Room to Move" from the Dan Aykroyd movie My Stepmother Is an Alien.)

This year's Halloween show will hinge upon an unholy obsession with physical fitness, and I thought this song captured some of the melancholy associated with bad body image. It was arranged in a pretty straightforward way, though in rehearsal we have decided to reorchestrate it somewhat.... I won't spoil the surprise, however!

QUESTION: What is your favorite movie montage song? Doesn't have to be 80's. Send me a comment below and I'll consider adding your favorite to the list of new Detholz! covers this year! Help, folks, I need song ideas!

Tune in next week for next installment of the Covers Countdown! See below for details on the Halloween Blog Roll-Up:

DETHOLZ! BLOG ROLL-UP CHALLENGE!

2. Write a Detholz!-related blog. Whether it’s about a show, a song, or how much you want to see Karl Doerfer (DH! guitarist) prance around in a Laura Bush costume, any and all is fair game as long as it’s Detholz!-related.

3. Put the following text somewhere in your post:

...but while you newborn "Hip Hop" heads are watching this VH1 Hip Hop honors garbage, I would like to ruin your night by saying your wasting your time on that bullshit Hip Hop lesson.

They give us (Hip Hop as a culture) 2 hours out of the YEAR to honor a few commercialized artists that paved the way for your favorite rappers to jack thier lyrics, twist em, and get credit for them..

Today at work, i'm listening to the ONLY radio show I listen to (Hot 97s Old School at noon) and they mentioned the show tonight, I immediately texted my friend to let her know to tune in...she's now learning what went down during the years she had missed for whatever reason, and texted back that she's "excited" about the show...Now either im just a person trying to find the negative in a situation, or maybe somewhat more knowledgable about this but frankly there really isnt much to be excited about..I still love you though (seriously)..Cypress Hill never really took me there like Slick Rick sorta did, but whatever....I decided to make this week my own Hip Hop Honors week...Paying homage to my favorite artists that set shit off (in no specific order) while I was a youngin.....and for the record I DO have much, much respect for Slick Rick...he's the only dude that can stand on the stage, have us all look up at him and accept the fact that he's looking down at us calling us "crumbs"...he called us crumbs.

1st up...Face Mob..Scarface...the real King of the South

does anyone have that "Scarface in NYC" freestyle off of that Kay Slay mixtape from a couple years ago, when he went retarted on the Styles P "Live your Life" beat by any chance?..I'll pay for it, or trade some music with whoever helps me out..

I bet all 9 of you thought my 1st choice will be Gang Starr or Public Enemy right?..

I'll save em for later.

I was on HHDX this week, and a writer there had an article breaking down a bit of Mainstream Hip-Hop

I was on HHDX this week, and a writer there had an article breaking down a bit of Mainstream Hip-Hop's love affair with the underground. And then I got to thinking, and then I got to drinking, and then I got to crying, now my self esteem is sinking. But anyway, What would be some collabs I'd pay top dollar to hear? I'm listing a few and Why!

#1 Kanye West and MF DOOM

Imagine this. Two of the heaviest samplers around, and my top two producers on the mic, on just one track, let alone an album! Kanye has a penchant for witty, sometimes intentionally corny, but self assured charismatic lines and songs, While Metalface is known for his ramble-esque, stream of conscious, obscurely referenced no-two-joints-are-ever-alike style. Splitting productin down the middle, or, hell, even co-producing every track (it could only be 12 tracks, no more, no less) Would almost certainly make for an album one part raw, one part flashy, eleventy billion parts Classic Hip-Hop.

#2 Ice Cube and Immortal Technique.

Listen, say what you want about IT. He's been hyped up a bit recently, and, truth be told, though I own his whole catalogue, he's no groundbreaking emcee. But he stays on some knowledge, and even on his funny (by his standards, that is) songs, he finds a way to weave some "You need to know such and such happened" lines in every verse. Cube is the father of said style, and the mainstream gangster rap we love and hate today. Truth be told, though he did some good (Three Kings) and wack (Friday After Next) movies, O'Shea never fell off on the mic, he just picked terrible beats and switched up his subject matter for like, three albums. But the beats are back, and he's back on his Sox Cap grind it seems as of late. My faith was totally renewed in Cubie when I heard him on the Bad Day Worst Day Remix with Killer Mike (He comes later!) and Raw Footage was a solid, damn near classic Ice Cube outing. They would have to switch up production, because it would almost certainly get boring, but if they could throw two or three non-cliche' hype tracks, I'd bump it til the nursing home.

#3 GZA and Lupe Fiasco

Lupe is a Beast. GZA is The Genius. They're amazing storytellers, though in totally different ways, they never come weak. The weakest verse I've ever heard from Lu was Kick, Push. That song makes me want to find my old board and hit up Brigham and Women's Hospital grounds just for old time's sake every time I hear it. Pro Tools was classic GZA, packed full of songs, full of oddball, confident, left of center rhymes, and some scathing reminders of the God Zig-Zag-Zig Allah's lyrical prowess. He's got butter for the popcorn, dip for the chips, an ego for your trip, some scripts for you to flip. Lupe? Well, when he's not lamping in some fly ish, he's crashing the greatest of all time party at an amazing clip. Two albums. You know who else cemented their place in Hip-Hop lore with two albums? Chris Wallace, that's who. The beats would be on point, they both have decent ears for tracks, and with a couple Lu written hooks (GZA's can be deflating at times) and maybe a Matt Santos lookout, they'd be looking at more accolades than sammiches for fat women.

#4 Jay-Z and RAGU.

This would never happen. Rae and Ghost don't like anybody, and Rae was a vocal critic of Jay's return a few years back. But still, no one does crime and grime better than Rae And Ghost Unite. Jay, however, came close with his reasonable doubt outing (That came out when I was 6, damn!) While Jay's was more of a flashy, mafioso don feel, Iron Man & Only Built 4 Cuban Linx were just the opposite: street level dirt from a ghetto head's perspective, with some good ole Staten Isle 5 percenter flavor thrown into everything. Jay and Ghost are my two favorite emcees ever, with Rae not too far down the list, so to hear them each get a verse and play off of one another? I'd lock myself in my room and play it til my iPod exploded. This will never happen. But, please, I hope it does.

#5 Bun B and Q-Tip

RIP Pimp C. Bun is, in my book, level with Face for King of the South Honors. And Kamal? Sans him, Phife and Ali Shaheed, there is no KanYe, Lupe, Wale, etc. They're almost polar opposites. Bernard came up as the king of the hubber trade, Q came up with his Sky Pager. But now the two are elder statesmen of this whole ish, yet they're still just as nice on the mic. Gettin' Up was my summer anthem, and Bun's last two albums along with UGK's are still getting spin. They can reach out all over for fresh beats and features, I've never seen either in a wack video, and Weezy has love for Bun, so need be, he could jump on a hook for a commercial single. It would be interesting, and amazing to say the least. Though the least expected, this would be, outside of Ye, the most commercially succesful album of the 5 I listed. Imagine Qtip over a DJ Toomp or Polow Da Don Beat, Or Bun B over Madlib?! Heat, guranteed heat.

Last night Foxy Brown celebrated her birthday at club Q - New York on Manhattan's east-side. Some hip-hop heavyweights came out to show Foxy love and even got up to perform with her on stage. Peep the pics (courtesy of WhatsPoppin.Net) - my girl Foxy looked hella sexy in that pink Herve Leger number... I was literally OUTSIDE the club last night, but at the last minute decided to go home and take my ass to sleep instead - oops.

It was nice to read that the hip-hop world, including Cee-Lo, Public Enemy and Scarface, remembered Isaac Hayes, who died in August at the age of 65, at last night’s VH1’s Fifth Annual Hip-Hop Awards at The Hammerstein Ballroom in New York.

According to AllHipHop.com:

A number of rappers and R&B singers paid homage to the Hayes, who influenced several generations of artists with his musical genius.

Public Enemy performed songs like “Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos,” which incorporated a portion of Hayes’ classic track “Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic.”

Scarface rapped his verse on “My Mind’s Playing Tricks on Me,” which utilized a sample from Hayes’ track “Hung Up On My Baby,” from the album Tough Guys.

Scarface was influenced by all of Hayes’ album, including Hayes’ groundbreaking release Black Moses, which earned acclaimed for its fold-out album artwork, in addition to its extended grooves, which was unheard of from a black artist.

“Black Moses, s**t, that’s my n**a, he’s a bad mother f***er,” Scarface told AllHipHop.com. “My most memorable moment [was] with Isaac Hayes in Virgin Studios for four or five hours. I was showing him my reels and we just kicked it talking about everything. After that, he had an interview in The Source, and spoke real highly of me.”

Estelle, Mos Def and Cee-Lo also played songs that Hayes composed or sang.

The awards, which airs Monday, was hosted by comedian Tracy Morgan.
