Despite the Chicago Bears dominating the Detroit Lions, winning by the score of 34-7, I’m still left with mixed emotions. We are five games into the season and I still don’t know what to make of the Bears.

Against good teams that were hampered by key injuries and other personnel issues, the Bears broke even, winning twice and losing twice. What’s more damning is the fact that the Bears lead each game deep into the fourth quarter. They should probably be undefeated right now.

And after destroying the Lions today, the Bears are now undefeated against teams that are being coached and managed by Piggy from Lord of the Flies. But what does that tell me about the Bears, other than they can play the role of schoolyard bully when pummeling the kids who receive gold stars for not going number-two on themselves during recess?

The bad news is... (read more here)

When I was a child I used to wake up the morning of October 9 and jump out of bed with excitement. I knew that there were toys coming later in the day, and I was eager to get to them.

That is no longer the case. This morning when I woke up I didn't realize what day it was. In fact, the only reason I remembered that it was my birthday (that early in the morning at least - I would have remembered later) is because my dad sent me a "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" text.

Needless to say, I'm thinking about the journey of life today. I've now been alive for two decades - a score, if you prefer. (To be technical, I'm writing this at 9 a.m. and I wasn't born until around 10:35 p.m., but I think that would be ridiculous as far as splitting hairs goes.) I never thought I would make it to this age. You know, when you're young you often don't think past the cartoon you're watching, the cookie you're eating or the game you're playing. And so life sneaks up on you. You forget that time passes, until it has passed.

That's what they say, anyway. I'm determined not to let time pass me by without my acknowledgement. So I'm taking this moment to re-evaluate.

The biggest question is, "Do you enjoy your life as it is today?"

Yes. And I find that, when I'm not, it's because of attitude. I went through a spell at the paper where I hated my job and seriously considered jumping ship. But now I'm finding that I love my job. There's so much to do, and I have fun doing it.

I've learned it's about attitude and how you choose to look at life.

The second question is, "Do you have any regrets?"

Probably, but they are in the past - which is the best place for regrets. I have a unique philosophy about what regrets are for. I believe that they are great, beautiful gifts from God while simultaneously being terrible, ugly burdens from Lucifer. This is because we can choose (attitude). We can choose to learn from regret so we know how to handle a situation in the future. Or we can choose to let it eat us from the inside out.

I consider regret a gift.

The last question is, "Are you excited about where you are going?"

I'm engaged. Of course I'm excited about my future. And I don't know what my career path looks like, but I'm excited about it. I'm excited to find out.

Verdict: The last 20 years were amazing. I hope (literally) for about 100 more to live this journey.

A daily dose of computer games can boost maths attainment, according to a study carried out in Scottish schools.

Learning and Teaching Scotland - the main organization for the development of the curriculum - analyzed the effect of a ""brain training"" game.

It also found improvements in pupils' concentration and behavior.

The study involved more than 600 pupils in 32 schools across Scotland using the Brain Training from Dr Kawashima game on the Nintendo DS every day.

The project followed a pilot study in Dundee last year.

A group of pupils played the game, which included reading tests, problem-solving exercises and memory puzzles, for 20 minutes at the start of their class for nine weeks. A control group continued their lessons in a more traditional manner.

The pupils were tested at the beginning and then the end of the study.

Researchers found that while all groups had improved their scores, the group using the game had improved by a further 50%.

The time taken to complete the tests also dropped by five minutes, from 18.5 minutes to 13.5 minutes. The improvement in the games group was double that of the control group.

The study involved more than 600 pupils across the country

Less able children were found to be more likely to improve than the highest attainers and almost all pupils had an increased perception of their own ability.

The study also found that it made no difference if the children had the game at home and noted no difference in ability between girls or boys.

It found improvements in absence and lateness in some classes.

Derek Robertson, LTS's national adviser for emerging technologies and learning, said the results offered the first independent, academic evidence that this type of computer game could improve attainment when used in an educational context.

He said: ""Computer games help flatten out the hierarchy that exists in schools - they are in the domain of the learner as opposed to the domain of the school.

""This intervention encouraged all children to engage and get success in a different contextual framework; one in which they don't know their place.""

FACT

You can't start until you start.

[caption id="attachment_47" align="alignnone" width="110" caption="Ready, Set, Start"][/caption]

FODDER

Everything is topsy turvy right now, so it may be a good time to do some things differently. Instead of hanging precariously on to the status quo in the business world, which is undeniably shaky and unpredictable as of late, rethink the start. I've been reading one heckuva book for entrepreneurial types, starting entrepreneurial things. In The Art of the Start, Guy Kawasaki waxes with poetic incisiveness about how you can focus your knowledge, love and determination to create what you dream of starting, with foresight AND without getting bogged down in the planning process. He takes you through each step of creating a business in a way that would make my SCORE volunteer counselors' hair stand on end. From raising capital and selecting of a business model, to making a difference in the world, Kawasaki's approach has me whistling, and I aint whistling Dixie. There's no unrealistic rosy fantasizing about a Utopian future, in The Art of the Start, just a solid, yet creative approach to getting off the mark, while minimizing excessive detail. I'm especially fond of his suggestion to break away from planning the start, and starting instead. Like me, he's a fan of iteration. Do a reasonable amount of pre-work and thinking things through, BUT BY ALL MEANS, GET GOING. Everybody who is successful is, as they say, "Out there". Don't keep your idea a secret. Get into action. Get help. Create a prototype. Incorporate feedback. Then go on to the next iteration.

FUN

Try one of Kawasaki's ideas. Create a brief (2 or 3 word) mantra with a customer focus (for your edification only, and not to be confused with a tagline) and take a pass on creating a mission statement. Mission statements boil down to mantra's anyway.

May your mystical incantation be the start of something truly special, and post your thoughts about starting here...

I attended a SCORE Atlanta conference today on marketing & sales.

I attended a SCORE Atlanta conference today on marketing & sales.

In case you haven't heard of this organization, it's a non-profit resource partner of the Small Business Administration (as in SBA loans) with volunteer business owners and corporate executives, both retired and working, who are giving back by providing advice on pretty much any business-related topic. Many years ago, when I was just starting out, I went to a workshop, and now I'm head-slapping myself for not taking advatange of this phenomenal treasure.

I hate sales. Really. The idea of selling and networking put my stomach in knots, despite being told I'm good at both. Believe it or not, I don't like talking about myself. But as a small-business owner, it's something I MUST do if I want to continue eating. And I'm a big fan of food.

So … I went to this conference at the suggestion of the wife of a client. It was the best $69 I've spent on advertising and professional development. Not only were the presenters (well, most of them) warm, engaging people who knew their stuff, I found myself easily talking to other attendees about what they did and how I could help them. (Gasp!) They were nice people. It wasn't scary. And the boxed lunch from Corner Bakery was unexpectedly tasty.

When I got back, after checking voice mail and e-mail and the mailbox and talking to the nice ladies in the leasing office, I started implementing things I'd learned throughout the day. Hence, this new blog. How's that for motivating?

And now I'm better equipped to help my clients position and market themselves more effectively, too, with ideas about free PR, using social media (go ahead, ask me what that is), consultative selling, and building relationships.

I've got a to-do list for me, notes of things to share with clients, and business cards to both follow up on and pass along. I just might become a networking salesperson.

Maybe after dinner.

I just posted a new track on my site and thought I'd give all you faithful blog readers a first look (since no one else is aware it's up yet). The track was a demo I wrote called Behind the Wall. The piece was written with isolation in mind, I tried to keep the instruments isolated and somewhat stark, but cohesive as a song. I used solo and small ensemble string sections and a piano to create the piece. Enjoy.

With the Twenty 20 World Cup, a fresh format has brought new levels of frenzy and excitement amongst

With the Twenty 20 World Cup, a fresh format has brought new levels of frenzy and excitement amongst the cricket fans, and an increasing acceptance by the cricket purists.

So, is there anything to learn from Twenty 20? Yes, a lot.

It does not take the perfect ‘20-20’ vision to distinguish that cricket will never be the same again. But, this game seems to be a perfect metaphor for human life in this age. Gone is the sedate lifestyle reminiscent of a 5-day Test Match. Even a quick one-day match is not quick enough for the turbo-charged.

Today, we are living our lives just like a fast-paced Twenty 20 match. There is no time to rest, relax and reflect. We are in a mad race afflicted by the ‘Yeh Dil Maange More’ syndrome. There are umpteen sense objects to indulge in, and not enough time to enjoy them all.

Likewise, there is an inherent and all-pervasive urgency to score. Not just singles and twos, but score heavily and deal in fours and sixes. Even a six is not a six, unless it lands farthest into the stadium or even outside. Remember the Yuvraj Singh 6-on-6! The average monthly incomes too have skyrocketed as much as the batting strike rates and bowling run rates. Catch a breath if you can!

A dot ball – that’s both a boon as well as a bane in a Twenty 20 match. It relieves stress on the bowling side and puts pressure on the batting side. In other words, a dot ball denotes a transfer of tension from one side to another.

Doesn’t it mirror our life each instant? Every moment we swing between our expectations and the outcome. If things go our way, we rejoice, if not we panic. Of course, we love an eventful life. Imagine what strife a maiden over can cause!

Every player has to prove himself in a match. Who knows whether he may or may not get to play the next match? Once out, the expression on the player’s face during the long walk to the pavilion signifies his contribution to the game.

Similarly, human beings are conditioned to believe that they have only one life to live, and hence try to maximize their experience. A life well lived brings satisfaction to a person, as does a frivolous life bring remorse.

20 is the age of inexperience bordering on maturity. Rightly, Twenty 20 brings with it the flavour of youth and provides them a platform to perform and excel. This is reflective of the resurgence of the youth today, who are taking on tasks beyond their age.

With IPL, ICL, and then the Champions League set to rule, let the show go on and may the new species evolve!

This will be my second show since I have jumped back into the hobby. Since I didn't really know what to expect from my first show I am doing a little more preparation this time around.

I have been updating my player collection lists and will bring these with me in hopes of buying some cards that I have been unable to find on Ebay at an affordable price.

I am really hoping that the guy from the last show that had 6 tables full of vintage cards is there again as I have found a few Billy Williams cards that I did not know existed that I want to try to purchase them.

I am also curious to see if anyone has any packs from the 1980's for sale. I have the urge to rip open a few packs, but don't want to attempt this with any modern day cards.

Most importantly, I want to look around. I think that is what I miss most about collecting during the 1980's. I don't have the local baseball card store to spend a few hours in just looking at the new stuff. Gone are the fifty cent packs of Topps, Fleer, Donruss, and Score cards stacked next to each cash register at the local pharmacy. I miss actively seeking out cards. Ebay is a great and powerful tool, but as a collector and someone that admires design and style elements of baseball cards, I want to see them in person up close. I don't want to have to rely on a scanned image for each one of my purchases; I want to see the real thing!!!

So that is what I am going to do. And I'll be sure to bring my camera along to capture what I can of this show.

Stay tuned for my review sometime after this weekend!!!

If money and relationships are an uncomfortable mix, then credit and romance are downright strange

If money and relationships are an uncomfortable mix, then credit and romance are downright strange bedfellows.

"You may say you know everything about a person, but you probably don't know anything about his credit record," says Adam Levin, founder of Credit.com.

Now, a frequently aired TV commercial featuring a forlorn young husband forced to live with his in-laws because he was clueless about his bride's abysmal credit is aiming to spur young lovers to share credit scores.

Of course, the commercial's sponsor, the Web site freecreditreport.com, is hoping to rev up its credit information sales, too. Romantic partners are a big, untapped market.

It's important that consumers know that the only Web site where they can obtain a free credit report is AnnualCreditReport.com, a site set up by the federal government. One credit report per year from each of the reporting agencies is available for free to consumers.

"We have found that people often aren't interested in reviewing their credit report until there is a life event which makes them aware of how important it is," says Heather McLaughlin, spokeswoman for Experian Americas, the parent of freecreditreport.com. "The commercial about the couple living in the basement addresses one of those life events where knowing each other's credit prior to getting into a financial obligation together would have been helpful," she says.

But according to relationship experts, it will take much more than a commercial to get someone to present his partner with a report detailing his sinking debt.

Don't mention it
In a recent study of 50,000 couples who went through its marriage preparation course, Life Innovations finds "a large percentage of partners don't talk about money or credit issues in any detail at all," says Peter Larson, clinical psychologist and vice president of the Minneapolis firm.

They may prefer to remain mum about finances and credit, but these issues are major irritants to the 50,000 couples, adds Larson.

"Seventy-two percent of the 100,000 individual respondents said they wished their partner would be more careful about spending," says Larson. "And 56 percent say major debts are a problem."

Not my problem?
As long as you don't have an account held jointly in both names, you're not responsible for a romantic partner's debts. And debts that someone brings into a marriage under her own name are not legally the responsibility of the spouse, notes Alton Abramowitz, vice president of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.

But even when you're not legally liable for someone else's debts, if you're living together you'll suffer the irritating calls from creditors coming into your home, says Levin.

Look for clues
Not only is credit an unpopular topic of conversation, it's only human nature to keep a bad record to yourself. "It's hard to bring up because of the shame factor," says Levin.

Often, you don't have to actually to talk about credit or pull a report to know that your partner is on shaky ground.

Nancy Michaels, founder of the Web site MatchGoneWrong.com, believes there can be plenty of warning signs.

Trust me?
For most couples, simply talking about credit is all that's needed, not actually pulling each other's scores or credit records, says Larson. He likens pulling a credit report to a prenuptial agreement. "It implies a lack of trust," he says. "It means you need an underlying confirmation."

Still, just as there can be good reasons for a prenup, there can be reasons why couples need to exchange credit information. "Many more couples are choosing to keep their finances separate, but the tradition is still to combine finances," says Larson. "If I had any reason to believe my partner had a checkered financial past, I may want to sit down with a financial adviser and look at credit scores before I made the decision to combine finances. For some couples, this is an important move to being able to buy a house or finance a car. They need the credit of the individual most worthy of that type of financing."

My number for yours
Federal law prohibits anyone from seeking credit information about another individual for personal reasons without that person's consent. So, you don't have to worry that your significant other is digging up your credit sins behind your back.

But, if it's true love, credit-scarred individuals may have nothing to fear about barring their score. The Internet dating service, True.com, conducted a survey earlier this year of some 2,200 online respondents. In response to a question about whether they would stay in a relationship where their partner had substantial credit card debt or had filed for bankruptcy, 87 percent of men and 80 percent of women said they would.
