I went because I was invited by my supervisor/professor to do so -- which is incredibly uncommon for me, and incredibly sweet -- and I met up with several of his doctoral students who were themselves delightful. Below is a flavor of the afternoon:

These pictures just cannot do justice to the overwhelmingly strong winds that greeted us every step of the ascent and descent. They were so strong, we all were able to lean back against them without falling, as we stood atop the peaks overlooking this great place. Winds can certainly take it out of you! But the view just could not be more worthwhile: 

The last picture is the best evidence I have of these powerful winds. As my professor said whilst admiring this tree: what a beautiful creation. It is something, indeed.

Before a trip out of Edinburgh to Loch Lomond I had never heard of the Heilan Coo. Then I found out from a friend that we were going to meet the most famous of the Heilan Coo, Hamish. The tour guide told all of his background information, his age, where he was from, what he does now. When we finally reached his home he did not come out. Everyone on the tour tried everything to plead him out to see us.

It failed.

I gave up ever meeting Hamish.

Then, half a year later, I found myself on my way to the House of Hamish. At first he would not come out. Cajoles, jeers, and pleads fell onto deaf ears. He was having nothing to do with us. Again.

It took the women of the tour group to successfully call him out. And out he came! He was covered in long flowing golden hair. An affectionate greeting was given to all who came forward. 

There was jubilation amidst the tour.

Scotland top group 9 this evening, but a stagerring miss from three yards out from Chris Iwelumo - making his debut for Scotland - may well come back to haunt George Burley's side. The Netherlands, Scotland's next opponents in March next year, play Iceland this evening in Rotterdam and will overtake the Scots should they win.

In an exciting end-to-end game with many chances, Wolves player Chris Iwelumo missed probably the easiest goal he would ever score. The 30 year-old striker, who came on for James Morrison to partner Hib's Stephen Fletcher (in place of lone striker James McFadden) in a two-man attack somehow managed to sidefoot Gary Naysmith's cross past the post from three yards out.

At this stage, we'd have expected Scotland to have had at least six points from a possible nine, a points total that would have seen them go into the international break with some comfort before they Holland game. But the defeat to Macedonia and the points dropped against Norway may make Scotland's qualification changes that bit harder. There's no need to panic just yet - Scotland still have to play our Iceland, Holland and Macedonia at Hampden and Burley should be looking to get six points from those games. Holland will be tough to beat (though not impossible, the Dutch where lucky to come away with a win in Macedonia) and no one is expecting too much from those games but let the two lessons be learned from tonights performance: Scotland play better with two up front, and you cannot afford to drop points at home.

Today  I made a full makeove on my mom. Scary but exciting. Colored her hair dark and cut it in a totally new hairstyle. She didn't decide yet if she likes it but keep staring at herself in the mirror, (I hope it's a good sign...). No, I am not a hairdresser at all, but come on, how hard can it be??? Yeah, if you want something specific fine. I would not go to me for a haircut though... ha ha ha!

Before that I was out doing some shopping and ran into a second hand shop that just opened. I figured I had to check it out and I found a pair of Miss Sixty Jeans that suits me perfectly and best of all, pricetag was still on, so they were never worn. Perfect! Costed 10% of what they normally cost in the shops. Me like!

Hallway looks like crap now with mud and dust all over with partially removed wall-paper. I hope those guys come back here to complete the job!!!

Had a tiny power-nap just before as well, both of my cats joined me and purred me to sleep. I really love cats. We have a dog as well that is exceptionally cute, but I am really a cat-person.

Oh, and had some exciting news. My hubbie is signed up for a pretty big film-job. He has already scored some movies and commercials and released two albums, but this is the biggest so far. Probably gonna fly over to Scotland and the whole thing next year.

I know, this should probably be in "the warehouse" on Page 2. Have you been there, lately? I'd like to get a documentary funded to make an investigation into these things. The shows I've seen on TV have been crap. The youtube teasers are actually better, mostly. Did he say "funded"... ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. Well, has anyone gone into this from a CSI or 'forensic files' approach? Or with 24 hr. motion detector activated cameras? Has anyone researched and constructed a calendar timeline of these? Put canine corps watchdogs out in the fields? Etc.

That reminds me. One year in college, I had a roommate who's dad was a VP of Field Enterprises in Chicago. They published the World Book Encyclopedia and other stuff. Because of his dad's connections, Rick got paid to spend all summer at Loch Ness, looking for 'Nessie' to appear. I asked him, wide-eyed, "Gee, how was that?", having wanted to go to Scotland forever. "F-in' boring. We just sat on rooftops all summer, smoking cigarettes and drinking beer. Never saw a thing. Complete BS."

H-m-m-m, yeah, 'Nessie' saw you.

Could a psychological test battery be a mandatory part of driver certification in the future?  Perhaps in Scotland, according to a report by the BBC.  The Driving Instructors Association has created a psychometric assessment of  decision making, and personality traits related to driving.  These are new areas, in aiddition to conventional driving psychomotor skills (coordination, manoevering, knowledge of rules). 

While the instructor's hope is to diagnose risky students, and change them before they get into trouble, I'm surprised actuarials in insurance companies haven't looked at this sooner.  Perhaps it is because they don't have knowledge of Rasch Measurement, Item Response Theory or Computer-Adaptive Testing that makes such measures straightforward, short and meaningful?

This recipe for uncooked chocolate fudge comes the early to mid 20th century. It can have many flavours added to it, from vanilla, essences, fruit and even alcahol.

Ingredients
3oz/85g full fat cream cheese
2oz/55g good quality chopped pieces
10oz/280g sieved icing sugar
salt to taste
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method
1 Into a large mixing bowl place the cream cheese.
2 Beat the cheese until it is smooth.
3 Place a sieve over the mixing bowl.
4 Spoon in the icing sugar.
5 Shake the icing sugar into the creamed cream cheese.
6 Beat in the sieved sugar until the mixture becomes light and fluffy.
7 Place a glass basin over a saucepan of hot but not boiling water.
8 Add the chocolate pieces and allow to melt completely.
9 Remove the bowl and allow the chocolate to cool slightly.
10 Pour the chocolate into the cheese and sugar mixture.
11 Add the vanilla essence and salt.
12 Beat thoroughly.
13 Butter a shallow tin measuring 7" x 5".
14 Using a spatula, transfer the mixture from the bowl into the tin.
15 Press the mixture into the tin.16 Smooth the top.

Chill until smooth enough to cut into squares.

Notes
This fudge will not last for more than 48 hours in edible condition.

On to matters of national importance I understand that the Tartan Army are once again re-recording a Scotland squad record for the benefit of Children In Need, at half time today the crowd will be "singing" We Have A Dream originally released in 1982 the single will be released next month by which time I hope we still have an interest in the core business of qualifying for 2010.

As celebrity weddings go, it's one of the wackiest (and, er, sweetest) you're ever likely to see.

German pop star Ramma Damma, aka Ulli Hopper, decided to get married – to a pineapple.

Picking up his bride for about £8 ($13USD) – he wanted one who wasn't cheap – he drove her across the Scottish border to Gretna Green in a Jaguar covered in green AstroTurf.

There he and the pineapple – which he affectionately named Tippi – were wed before returning to his home in Munich.

'We drove through the night – it was a fun away wedding, not a runaway wedding,' he said.

'I loved her. I wanted to marry her. We stayed in Gretna Green Hall Hotel and we were married by a craftsman wearing a kilt.

'We enjoyed meals out. We would go to restaurants and she would enjoy a glass of water over dinner.

'Tippi loved to go to the movies – especially ones about earthquakes – and she would sit on my lap when she got scared.'

Now in case you were wondering why you've never heard of Hopper, this all happened 38 years ago.

But although Tippi has long since departed, the union has borne fruit.

Today, Hopper is known as the Green Rebel in Munich, where he runs the only 'plant sanctuary' in Germany, accommodating 300 indoor plants.

The 65-year-old is almost completely self-sufficient, even making his own stinging nettle spaghetti or brewing plum cider in a 230-litre bin.

'I will defend every plant,' he said. 'They are the wonders of our world – we just to need to listen to them.'

LONDON (AFP) — A woman who celebrated her 105th birthday this week said the secret to long life was celibacy, adding that she imagined sex was a "lot of hassle."

Clara Meadmore, who marked her birthday with a drop of wine at the Perran Bay nursing home in Cornwall, southwest England, also received a card from Queen Elizabeth II.

"People have asked me whether I am a homosexual and the answer is no," Meadmore said.

"I have just never been interested in sex.

"I imagine there is a lot of hassle involved and I have always been busy doing other things."

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1903, Meadmore lived in Canada and New Zealand as a child before returning to Britain in her 20s to work as a secretary and housekeeper.

She served with the army in Egypt during World War II, and subsequently lived in London and New Zealand before retiring 40 years ago in Cornwall.

I think sex sells.

Sex is #1 by so much that #2, #3, and #4 are all kind of fighting it out for a distant second. 

I'd have to say that Fear probably holds the #2 spot, though.  Fear is the opposite of sex.  Anything you're advertising is either trying to get you something (sex) or keep you away from something (fear).  In fact, fear is only #2 because the biggest fear that they're trying to scare you off of is the fear of no sex.

I'd say "social status" is #3, but this far down the list it's deeply tied in to #1 (Sex) and #2 (Fear).  "Social status" is essentially equivalent to flattery.  They'll tell you that the product will make you smarter/sexier/all-around better, with the intent of increasing your social standing. 

Occasionally they'll pretend they're using flattery in the absence of social standing, to make you a "better you" regardless of what other people think about you, but they're usually lying about that.  Mountain Dew may tell you to "obey your thirst" rather than social status, but they really want you to think, "Won't everybody admire how independent I am of their approval!" 

Money is #4, but that's also deeply tied to social standing, sex, and fear, because money is what you use to buy your way into/out of those things.

Health is #5, but they're really using fear again, fear of illness and fear of death.  The ads talk about feeling better, but it's often as much about social standing because of looking better.

Assuming that "sex sells" would include things such as ED remedies (e.g., Viagra), I’d say that #2 on the best selling list would be anything related to losing weight.  This would include Diet Books (Atkins, South Beach), Diet Programs (Weight Watchers, etc.), Lose Weight Medical Procedures (lap band surgery, cosmetic procedures such as liposuction).

#3 would be Making Money (and in general, making money easily!).  This would include investing, flipping houses, books, TV shows/informercials, etc related to Making Money), Work at home (legit and scams),  gambling, eBay, etc. 

#4 I’m not so sure.   Perhaps it would be anything related to cosmetic or physical self-improvement, such as cosmetic surgery (face lifts, nose jobs, etc), makeup, fitness improvement (note the many infomercials on ab toners, perfect pushup gizmos, an so on.)

It’ll be interesting to see the future!

On Saturday afternoon at Hampden, Scotland play the third game of their World Cup 2010 campaign when Norway come to Glasgow, a qualifying match which we should, given the confidence that has recently been instilled in the national squad following their win over Iceland, win - in theory anyway.

Squad

Currently, three players have pulled out of the first team due to injuries, leaving us with a smaller squad than we’d have liked. Those who have dropped out  so far are Rangers players Kenny Miller and Kevin Thomson and Derby County’s Kris Commons. If we're honest, only the loss of Miller really concerns us, as he always seems to perform in his outings for the national side.

The earlier losses of captain Barry Ferguson through injury and vice-captain Stephen McManus through suspension has George Burley looking to Manchester United’s Darren Fletcher to stand in as captain on this occasion. Fletcher has captained the national side before, against Estonia in 2004, so he has previous experience of the task and should be up to it.

Key Players

With Miller out, manager George Burley should look to McFadden to spearhead the attack from the start, perhaps partnered by Kris Boyd or Chris Iwelumo, the Wolves forward who will earn his first full Scotland cap should he come on. The 30 year-old has scored eight times for Wolves this season, including a hat-trick against Preston North End in his last game before he picked up a three match suspension for his alleged head-butt on Preston's Sean St Ledger.

At the back, David Weir will be key with the loss of McManus to suspension. His experience at this level should pay dividends with those in front of him.

For Norway, with John Carew and Steffen Iverson both doubtful for the game, its hard to see where the major threat is coming from.

History

Scotland and Norway have competed a few times in the last decade.  Firstly, there was the 1-1 draw at France ’98, a Craig Burley strike cancelling out a Håvard Flo goal 20 minutes earlier.  This was the only open play goal we scored, and the only point we gained in the championship.  In 2004, attempting to qualify for the 2006 World Cup, we lost by a single goal to the Norwegians, a result we rectified the next time we faced them, winning 2-1.  Incidentally, Scotland’s first ever match outside the British Isles was against Norway, all the way back in 1929. The game was played in Bergen and the Scots won it 7-3.

Form

Looking at the current form of both teams, Norway should have the upper hand in this match. Comparing the last 8 games played for each team, Scotland has a record of played 2, drawn 2, lost 4, compared to Norway’s played 2, drawn 3,  lost 3.

There isn’t a great deal to choose between each team at the minute, but considering neither team have played great opposition (with the exception of Scotland vs Italy) the results aren’t great. Given that both teams should be on the way up, in a challenging group to qualify for South Africa 2010, this will be a good fight out for 2nd spot, with Holland running away with the top. We are basically playing for the play-off spot with Norway.

Our predictions for the group are The Netherlands, Scotland, Norway, and Macedonia with Iceland propping up the table.

For the match ahead, we’re going to go for a 3-1 win for Scotland.

A YOUNG boy who battled back from a horrific car crash will lead out the national team at Hampden Park on Saturday (11th).

Lewis Robertson, 9, has been chosen as a mascot for the crunch match against Norway after his Gran entered him into a radio competition.

The football-mad youngster from Dunfermline, Fife was badly injured in a car crash when he was just 10 months old on Boxing Day 1999.

After a month in hospital suffering from a broken thigh-bone, Lewis emerged with a slight bend in his leg.

And although doctors told the family he would grow out of it, his parents Aaron, 30, and Joanne, 36, were worried.

But the brave Dunfermline fan has fought his way back to full fitness and is all set to walk out with his idols at Hampden.

Excited Lewis said: “I was too young to remember anything about the crash but I have seen all the pictures. I’m glad that I can’t remember the pain.

It’s so exciting to be a mascot for the Norway match and it still hasn’t sunk in. I’m going to walk out in front of 50,000 screaming fans.”

Proud mum Joanne - a self-employed cake designer – says Lewis has been looking forward to his role so much that he has been finding it difficult to sleep as the big day approaches.

And she says the nine-year-old – whose favourite player is James McFadden – has also been rehearsing the lyrics to Flower of Scotland just in case he appears on television.

Joanne said: “The whole family are going along to Hampden to cheer Lewis on. It’s going to be such a special day and you never know he might be back there one day as a player.

“We are all really proud of him. After the accident his leg was bent for a couple of years and we weren’t sure if it would be permanent but he has recovered well and now runs about like any other boy his age.”

Lewis’s Gran Moira entered her grandson into the competition after the radio station asked why entrants deserved to be included.

As well as recovering from his injuries, Lewis also helped his Gran recover after she too suffered a broken leg.

The youngster will receive a full Scotland kit and two free tickets to the match as well as the once-in-a-lifetime chance of running out with the full Scotland team.

And plucky Lewis is sure that he’ll bring good luck to the game.

He said: “I think Scotland are definitely going to win. I think it will be a 2-0 defeat against Norway, with James McFadden scoring the first goal.”

The Scottish Royal Commission reported how "in 1936 a cup-marked boulder measuring 3ft 10in in length, 3ft 8in width and 1ft 8in in thickness, was found in a cultivated field half a mile southeast of Hawksnest and 75 yards north of the road from Hawksnest to Ladhopemoor." The carved stone had been scarred a little by the plough, but had "23 shallow cup-marks on its upper surface varying from 1in to 1.75in diameter."

The 24-year-old will be winning what is already is 40th cap against Norway tomorrow in what is already being billed as a must-win encounter for the Scots at Hampden.

And with regular skipper Barry Ferguson and vice-captain Stephen McManus out through injury and suspension respectively, Fletcher will lead the side out as stand-in captain.

Fletcher says he will be drawing on his experienced gained at both club and international level to do the job well, admitting he is looking forward to the extra responsibility that being an international captain gives you.

"I'll go out there and give it my best and get the team up for the game and try to lead by example," Fletcher told Sky Sports.

"There are a number of experienced players at our club and in the international team as well - but especially at the club because you are with them day in day out," he stated.

"We've got a lot of experienced players who have won a lot of things and you learn different things from different types of characters. But I'll be my own man and I'll enjoy it on Saturday.

"If anything goes wrong on the pitch, sometimes you have to take responsibility and maybe change something.

"It's hard sometimes, the manager can obviously change things but, as a captain, if you see something going wrong then, on the pitch, you have to take that responsibility."

Despite the added pressure of leading his nation. Fletcher, who recently signed a new long-term contract Old Trafford, is confident of handling it.

"Maybe people do expect more but it's not a problem to me," he stated.

"It will give me a challenge to raise my game and answer those calls. It's something I look forward to," Fletcher added.

"Playing for Manchester United, sometimes these expectations do come but you have to deal with that every week at Manchester United and it's no different with Scotland.

"The Scotland fans expect a lot from us and rightly so because we have been progressing over the last couple of years and we're looking to get to the next stage, which is qualifying for a major competition.

"The fans, the squad, the manager all want that to happen."
