Walter Veltroni: allarmi, siam …! Voto – 9.

by Jim Garamone
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON (July 15, 2008) – Iran’s launch of a missile with a 2,000-kilometer range last week is a concrete example of the threat the world faces from missile proliferation, the chief of the Missile Defense Agency said Tuesday. Air Force Lt. Gen. Henry A. “Trey” Obering, said the United States is concerned specifically about the threat posed by developments North Korea and Iran are making in their missile programs.

“Iran is working on an extended-range version of the Shahab-3 and a new 2,000-kilometer medium-range ballistic missile, which they term the Ashura,” the general said at a news conference. Iran also claimed that it had successfully launched an exploratory space vehicle in February, which, analysts concluded, also was a Shahab-3. Last week, Iran launched several short- and medium-range ballistic missiles capable of striking Israel and the U.S. bases in the Middle East. Longer-ranged missiles are capable of striking Europe.

The U.S. concern with the spread of the technology was such that the current and previous administrations invested in fielding the missile defense program. “We needed to protect the United States and then to expand that protection for our deployed forces and our allies and friends in the European theater,” Obering said. The layered missile defense strategy melds boost-phase defense, mid-course defense and terminal-stage defense together. Various systems from ground-based interceptors, to airborne lasers to sea-based platforms provide protection against a rogue regime trying to launch one or two missiles at the United States or its allies.

U.S. officials are making great progress in integrating the missile defense systems with NATO programs, the general said. Obering discussed some of the systems’ successes. “In the boost phase, we've had great success with the airborne laser,” he said. The laser is mounted in a Boeing 747 and fires through the nose of the aircraft to destroy missiles just launching. “We have generated the power that we needed on the ground in a 747 fuselage mock-up, and we've also flown the aircraft,” he said. “We've demonstrated the tracking laser performance and an atmospheric compensation laser performance. All that goes together to show that we can shoot down a boosting missile. And we're on track to do that next year in a flight test.”

Thirty interceptor missiles at bases in Alaska and California make up the only defense the United States has against long-range missiles, Obering said. As time goes on, the general said, U.S. defense planners are concerned where countries like Iran and North Korea will go. They worry that the missile proliferators will develop more and more complex countermeasures to go along with their missiles. The agency is working to counter those moves, the general said.

Terminal-phase defense soon will receive another arrow in the quiver, as the agency prepares to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Air Defense system. The THAAD, which will come on line in the next year, shoots down missiles just inside and outside the atmosphere. Other agency projects include the launch of two space-tracking and surveillance system satellites and a test of missile interceptors scheduled July 18, Obering said. Tests have indicated the systems are working.

“Overall, since 2001, we have now conducted 35 of 43 successful hit-to-kill intercepts,” Obering said.

PS. I am NOT adding the picture to this post, because it has been debunked as a photoshop forgery of the 9 missiles. There may have been one missile, and the others were copies. I do not know enough about it, and I cannot find the link to someone who does. Maybe you can find one from someone who has trackbacked to me! Ain't life grand? ;)

It's in the news that Iran claims to have tested 9 missiles, and that the US Military confirms at least 7 of the tests.

This is disappointing news. Not because Iran tested the missiles, but because the US didn't shoot them down.

I thought this back when North Korea was testing its missiles, and I think it now: whenever a rogue state puts together a missile test, the US should have Aegis cruisers nearby, and shoot down the missiles.

Consider it real-world testing for SDI.

Consider it the finest in diplomacy. A chance to really hurt the reputations of our enemies, without hurting anyone.

Consider it a cold, hard threat.

Those missile tests are a threat. They need to be countered. Shoot them down.

Wieczór przemówienia Ali Ahmetiego (DUI) na Ploštadzie przypominał rewolucję: tłumy z albańskimi flagami, okrzyki w języku nie-macedońskim, sztuczne ognie i pieśni.

20 Questions addressed with so much British reserve that stiff upper lips well nigh litter the ufological Debris Field!
1. Mary, Mary… quite contrary, but how does her garden grow?

7. How does one choose to accept, as real, a flying spaghetti monster they have never seen even as they deny the existence of that which can be reputably perceived?

8. What's a righteous wage for "keeping the grand UFO conspiracy alive" and what is owed the righteous conspirators?

9. What is it about the "End Of Days" that has Errol Bruce-Knapp checking his watch and tapping his foot with no small impatience?

10. Do the "aliens" at once supply humankind equal parts utter deniability and a stark permission to believe?

18. What would a conclusive finding of bona fide extraterrestrial life on Mars via the latest robot probe mean… …really?

19. Did anyone else get tired of the unceasing dysfunctional space toilet stories every news cycle all over the world?

20. Are the Brits unfairly maligned for an "excessive" interest in bodily functions, both on and off planet?

Zounds, tut tut, and cheerio… but more than 60 minutes remain of discourse so reasoned, erudite, and reasonable it achieves a dryness profound enough to provide for its own abundant hydration! Obey your thirst? They're not really klasskurtxians, mind, but could play them on TV.

Too, news on the cancellation of the Roswell theme park is reported. SETI's ufological narrowness is iterated. NASA floundering? Where's George W. Bush when you need him. More!

Pictures of the "dark" side of the moon are suggested! And then? Doctor David Clarke! Listen to him verbally express a WEB site URL and know why people sing in English. Subsequently, he reveals the "truth."

In 1991, during Operation Desert Storm, my ship, USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55), witnessed a heart-stopping event. Saddam Hussein's forces launched a SCUD ballistic missile toward Saudi Arabia on February 25. By chance, that unguided missile hit and destroyed the U.S. barracks at Dhahran, killing 28 U.S. soldiers.

Al-Hussein missiles displayed in their erector-launchers.
Baghdad arms exhibition, April-May 1989. There are derived
from the Russian SCUD.

On board ship, we watched the entire event unfold from the sea and could do nothing. Our radar, the SPY-1, is the best and most accurate long range three-dimentional radar in serial production even today. The Aegis weapon system of the ship is the finest combat system at sea or ashore. But we had no missile capable of defeating a SCUD or any other ballistic missile in 1991.

I was mesmerized by the events of 1991 and set myself on a mission to help in any way that I could to bring a true ballistic missile defense system to American forces using the tools I knew best: the SPY-1, Aegis, the ships, and the sailors who crew and provide the excellent care for those fine ships and weapons systems.

Today, through the effort of tens of thousands of engineers, programmers and others, the United States Navy is proving out that capability that was only a small dream of a handful of people in 1991.

And all along the way, there was a chorus of naysayers who constantly proclaimed: this cannot be done. The physics is too stressing. You are wasting money and time. And many other criticisms.

Last week, USS Lake Erie again demonstrated this evolving U.S. Navy ballistic missile defense capability, as we reported today in The Washington Times....

Proving Ballistic Missile Defense

By John E. Carey
The Washington Times
June 9, 2008

On Thursday June 5, 2008, USS Lake Erie, a U.S. Navy guided missile cruiser, did something many critics say was and still is impossible. That ship and her crew destroyed a ballistic missile target just before that ballistic missile would have obliterated its target.

This was the first ballistic missile defense test of the sea-based system since a Navy cruiser surprised the world when it shot down an errant satellite earlier this year.

USS Lake Erie fired two interceptor missiles that shot down the target in its final seconds of flight about 12 miles above the Pacific Ocean. The target was destroyed about 100 miles northwest of the Hawaiian Island of Kauai about five minutes after it was launched.

Above: USS Lake Erie launches its ballistic
missile killer missile.

The Lake Erie crew didn’t know the exact time the launch would happen, only what their assignment would be. This is how the Navy does a full test of ship systems, the crew and the interceptor ballistic missile defense missile. Nothing is contrived.

This was the second successful intercept in two attempts of the sea-based terminal (just before ballistic missile hits its target) capability and the fourteenth overall successful test of the Navy Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense Program.

Ballistic missiles in the hands of nations like North Korea and Iran have been of concern for years because ballistic missiles would likely be used to deliver nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction and many “experts” said there was absolutely no defense against them.

Several even said the concept of hitting a “bullet with a bullet” would never be achieved.

Today, Navy ships have shown that they can reach targets on the edge of space, almost anywhere within the atmosphere, and down close to the ground. These ships equipped with the Aegis ballistic missile defense system have shown that they could destroy a North Korean ballistic missile headed for Japan, the United States or any number of targets in the Pacific region.

China also has a more than 15 year record of belligerent rhetoric and ballistic missile build-up opposite Taiwan.

File photo shows Chinese missiles rolling past Beijing's Tiananmen Gate during a military parade.
“The beauty and criticality of this test is that it allows you to add to our defense in depth” said Rear Admiral Brad Hicks, the navy’s Program Manager. “It allows us to kill in space and in the atmosphere from a single platform.”

Eighteen U.S. Navy ships will deploy this defensive warfighting capability in the next several months.The Navy’s Ballistic Missile Defense Program grew from decades of Navy missile defense and guided missile ship development and President Ronald Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative.

SDI, once derisively dubbed “Star Wars” by critics and most of the media, has evolved from a space-based concept into a more realistic sea and land-based “system of systems.”

On March 23, 1983, President Reagan announced from the Oval Office, “I’ve reached a decision which offers a new hope for our children in the 21st century.”

Since 1983, America’s Missile Defense effort has gone through tremendous changes in concept, budget and technological evolution. Yet President Reagan’s vision has never perished.

Today the at sea effort by the U.S. Navy and Japan’s Navy is one of the more demanding and successful elements of the ballistic missile defense effort.

Japan’s Navy already deploys this capability aboard its four Kongo class Aegis guided missile destroyers.

John E. Carey, a retired U.S. Navy Commander, served aboard three Aegis guided missile ships and in the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization. He is now president of International Defense Consultants, Inc. He is a frequent contributor to The Washington Times.

This photo released by the Department of Defense shows one of two interceptor missiles launched from the USS Lake Erie based at Pearl Harbor on Thursday June 5, 2008. The U.S. military intercepted a ballistic missile Thursday in the first such sea-based test since a Navy cruiser shot down an errant satellite earlier this year. The military fired the target, a Scud-like missile with a range of a few hundred miles, from a decommissioned amphibious assault ship near Hawaii's island of Kauai. The USS Lake Erie fired two interceptor missiles that shot down the target in its final seconds of flight about 12 miles above the Pacific Ocean. The target was shot down about 100 miles northwest of Kauai about five minutes after it was fired. Department of Defense photo.

MOORESTOWN, N.J., June 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Lockheed Martin's (NYSE: LMT - News) Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) Weapon System successfully detected, tracked and intercepted a short-range unitary ballistic missile target in the terminal phase of its trajectory during a test today at the Pacific Missile Range off the coast of Hawaii.This mission was the first to use the latest version of the Aegis BMD weapon system -- Aegis BMD 3.6.1. -- which adds to the proven sea-based missile defense system the capability to defeat short-range ballistic missiles, that have re-entered the atmosphere in their final stage of flight. The system will be certified for U.S. Navy fleet operations later this year.In the test mission, the SPY-1B radar on the Aegis BMD cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG 70) detected and tracked the ballistic missile target, and computed a targeting solution to guide two SM-2 Block IV missiles to a successful endo-atmospheric (within the atmosphere) intercept. Once the SM-2s were launched from the ship's Lockheed Martin-developed MK-41 Vertical Launching System (VLS), Aegis guided the missiles through the terminal phase of the intercept. The SM-2 Block IV missiles were recently modified to perform the terminal phase endo-atmospheric intercept of a ballistic missile.While this event marked the first test in the Missile Defense Agency's evaluation of Aegis BMD against a ballistic missile in its terminal phase, this is the second Aegis success in the terminal phase. In May 2006, the USS Lake Erie successfully intercepted a short-range ballistic missile in its terminal phase in a Navy-sponsored test using a version of the Linebacker Program first developed in 1998.In addition to the terminal phase successes, Aegis BMD has 12 successful exo-atmospheric intercepts in 14 attempts in the midcourse phase of flight. Separate from the ballistic missile defense tests, USS Lake Erie's Aegis BMD Weapon System was temporarily modified and successfully destroyed an errant United States satellite in February."Ballistic missiles present different challenges during each phase of flight, and Aegis BMD is proving its full range of flexibility," said Orlando Carvalho, vice president of Lockheed Martin's Surface/Sea-Based Missile Defense line of business. "That flexibility reflects the disciplined systems engineering that invented, evolved and continues to develop Aegis capabilities against threats yet to come. Engaging ballistic missiles from the sea in the terminal phase is challenging for both the Sailors who executed this mission and the weapon system they used. Sea-Based Terminal is a critical capability in the Aegis BMD weapon system that provides protection to population centers, our deployed forces abroad, and critical infrastructure."The Missile Defense Agency and the U.S. Navy are jointly developing Aegis BMD as part of the United States' Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS). Currently, 12 U.S. Navy Aegis-equipped warships have the ability to conduct long-range search and track, and engage ballistic missiles. Another five Aegis warships are equipped with Aegis BMD long-range surveillance and track capability. By the end of 2008, 15 Aegis destroyers and three Aegis cruisers will have the capability to engage short to intermediate-range ballistic missile threats and support other BMDS engagements using the Aegis BMD Weapon System and the SM-3. The Aegis BMD 3.6.1 tested today will be installed on all U.S. Navy Aegis BMD ships beginning in 2009.Japan has purchased Aegis BMD capability for its Kongo-class Aegis destroyers, and completed its first successful test of Aegis BMD in December 2007.

The Aegis Weapon System is currently deployed on 85 ships around the globe with more than 20 additional ships planned or under contract. In addition to the U.S., Aegis is the maritime weapon system of choice for Japan, South Korea, Norway, Spain and Australia.

Lockheed Martin is a world leader in systems integration and the development of air and missile defense systems and technologies, including the first operational hit-to-kill missile defense system, Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3). It also has considerable experience in interceptor systems, kill vehicles, battle management command, control and communications, precision pointing and tracking optics, as well as radar and other sensors that enable signal processing and data fusion. The company makes significant contributions to nearly all major U.S. Missile Defense Systems and participates in several global missile defense partnerships.

Headquartered in Bethesda, MD, Lockheed Martin employs more than 140,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation reported 2007 sales of $41.9 billion.

The USS Lake Erie nailed its assignment to shoot down a Scud-like missile off Kauai during its final minute of flight.

It was a one-two punch.

Two SM-2 missiles fired from the deck of the U-S-S Lake Erie.

"We fired two to improve our probability of success" says Rear Admiral Brad Hicks, Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense Program Director.

Both chasing a short range scud-like missile launched from a mobile platform about 300 miles off the coast of Kauai.

A test it passed with flying colors.

Dramatic video of the intercept-- 52 seconds after the launch-- shows a direct hit by both modified missiles.

The key difference for this test-- the target was destroyed within the Earth's atmosphere, 12 miles above sea level, 100 miles off Kauai.

"The reason you want that is some threats they don't stay up in space long enough to really engage them in space" explains Admiral Hicks.

What happened today was a blast fragmentation device that explodes near the target to intercept and destroy it.

The price tag for the test? 40-million dollars.

"The beauty and criticality of this test is that it allows you to add to our defense in depth" says Hicks. "It allows us to kill in space and in the atmosphere from a single platform."

The Erie crew didn't know the exact time the launch would happen, only what their assignment would be.

Five minutes after the launch, it was mission accomplished.

Another successful outing for this Pearl-Harbor based cruiser, using the same technique that shot down an out of control satellite in February.

The Missile Defense Agency calls Hawaii ideal testing grounds because of our Navy presence and isolation so debris poses no problems.

Over the next year and a half, the type of missile interception tested today will be installed on 18 Navy ships.

The next missile test off Kauai will happen later this year.

With water shortages in the summer becoming increasing every summer homeowners are looking to every possible opportunity to save the precious commodity including catching dew and rainwater. Many are having second thoughts about their lush lawns and even taking them out in favor of shrubs and rcok gardens which require little watering.

Another option is the watering system. Many gallons of water are wasted by the spray action of sprinklers. Water is basically atomized and a good share of it vaporizes leaving very little to get to the plants. If you calculate this over the course of a year it adds up to a huge wastage of money and water.

Root watering systems allow water to go directly from the tap to the roots without seeing air. Many of the pipes hook directly up to an automatic lawn watering system except that the flow is barely a trickle. In the case of shrubs and trees special basket weave cannisters are inserted into the ground within the root system and extend down as far as 36". This encourages the roots to stay deep and not creep up to the surface looking for water.

In larger, commercial fields subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) uses either permanently or temporarily-buried dripperline around the plant roots. Fertilizer is added directly to this feed line so that the nutrients go right to the plant and aren't leeched out into the acquifer.

For domestic purposes drip irrigation is also becoming popular bringing huge savings to homeowners and the environment.

20 Questions addressing the spirit of Deus Impeditio Esuritori Nullus
(No God Can Stop The Hungry) l

20 Questions addressing the spirit of Deus Impeditio Esuritori Nullus
(No God Can Stop The Hungry) leavened, as it is, by the curse of
living in "interesting times." Dave Furlotte, Paul Kimball, Brittany
Babakioff, Greg Bishop, and Alfred Lehmberg cast conversational runes
on roiling decks as intrepid Captain Errol Bruce-Knapp deftly navigates the
dangerous straights of Ufologia on the razor's edge. The hyperbole circuit
breaker only got warm reader. No apologies here. That's the way it feels.

1. What makes living in our present times so damned "interesting"?
Is the "thing" interesting itself or is it interesting because our
interest is interesting? Do we generally conceive our interesting
times as a curse leveled upon us by angry gods, of needs?

2. Does the "new ease of communication" we enjoy as a function of
these interesting times qualify as curse or blessing? The Internet:
curse or blessing?

3. What is the "Big Lie," and how is it supported by the internet?
How is it combated by the internet? How does UFO UpDates provide
this "support" or perform this "combat"?

4. What are the "Big Lies" in 21st Century Ufology?

5. How do all "Big Lies" maintain their endurance given the huge
amount of proof and evidence obverting them?

6. Will a ufological "believer" buy into any hoax or fabrication
only because a personal worldview is supported?

7. Can something be too good to believe? Can something be too
horrible to believe?

8. What is a skeptic? What is skepticism? What defines "without a
doubt"? Whose doubt? When? Why?

9. How does UFO UpDates avoid or obviate corporal punishment on your
deceased equine?

10. How much money did "The Alien Autopsy Film" make and how was
that not money made as a result of a fraud? Jonathon Reed? The
Fox Network? Faked Moon Landings?

11. How reliable is Snopes.com in unmasking "Big Lies," Urban
Legends, and Ufological hoaxes?

12. Does "chain E-mail" satisfy a psychological need or purposefully
clog internet bandwidth?

13. The woods are full of kookoos, kookoos... kookoos? The woods
are full of Koo-koos... ...but my heart is full of love?

14. Is there little truth to the rumor that Paul Kimball has
forsaken his ancestral Canada for the United States decidedly Left
Coast?

15. When Paul Kimball leaves Canada for film forays south of the
border, is he seen off by angry mobs with torches and pitchforks
demanding he not return?

16. UFO Retro Con III was a "cool reminder" of United States
cultural history but serves what purpose for a ufological world
history?

17. What was the "Integratron," really? Who was George Van Tassel
and did he have a strong connection to George Adamski?

18. How is Paul Kimball a leader in the "modern contactee speaker
movement"?

19. What is a "Jacques Vallee kind of UFO case"?

20. Why is a "Tin Foil Hat Contest" contest hosted by RetroCon III
at once a delight and an outrage?

Zound's Zot! Seventy-three minutes remain of a charmingly ebullient
Paul Kimball waxing on UFO Retro Con III. Additionally, Brittany
Babakioff provides some hope for a continuing progressive
civilization plus a place for upcoming generations in the hoary, if
thankfully unhallowed, halls of ufology.

Greg Bishop shows a brave expanse of wide intellectual horizon to his
ufological observations and provides some demonstration how we are
the better for them, too. Mac Tonnies gets a mention as does come an
effusive praise for John Greenwald of blackvault.com! Yea and
verily, good reader, do we not preview what's in view for cogent
review? Ahead lies all manner of weirdness, reader, where we just
may discover that it was the "noise" that was the "signal," all
along?

...Ufological sensibilities empowered are the listener's own!
Subscribe or know the HypnoToad! All hail the Toad!

The boys and girls from AVID have come through with the goods it would seem

NAB 2008 yielded strange results. Although no stand from AVID, the reseller event at the Hard Rock Hotel showed that AVID are certainly not down for the count.

MOJO DX: Great rev of the Mojo SDI. Whilst still available the Mojo SDI will shift backwards and make way for the new DX version.

- HDSDI and HDMI
- Multithreading between RAM, CPU and GPU
- An on off button (if you had a previous mojo its a big deal)

http://www.avid.com/products/Media-Composer-Mojo-DX/features.asp

Nitris DX: Finally AVID have seen the light...PCIe!!!! So throw away your Pyro cards and FW400 ports and feel the speed of PCIe.

- 6+ Streams of DNxHD
- PCIe Card means faster bus speed
- No More rosetta stones as we have full RS422
- Uncompressed 10bit HD
- Multithreading between RAM, CPU and GPU

http://www.avid.com/products/1099.htm

Vista and Leopard compatibility is a final touch that was important. Not so much the Vista but the Leopard 10.5 is a godsend.

More details to come as we close into the final release date

One was their real time HD software based MPEG to H.264/AVC transcoding software.

More challenging was their software based real-time 4K encoding that employed a commercial PC to bring it down to a bit-rate of 25Mbps. The target of this technology is to deliver high quality 4K images to next generation 4K receivers. While the encoding seemed to be a snap using a commercial PC to decode the stream back to a 4K signal, KDDI had to employ a CRAY computer.

Allan A. Samson dari University of California, Berkeley, dalam salah satu tulisannya mengenai Angkat

Drs.

I’m trying to work out a way to hack Bloglines. Bloglines was my first, and up to now, only RS

I'm trying to work out a way to hack Bloglines. Bloglines was my first, and up to now, only RSS reader- through Bloglines I discovered mon petit amour RSS, and I've been very happy with its basic features. Consequently, I recommended it when I introduced the library to feed-readers, and really should be earning commission now...We also use it as the hub for our very advanced subject alert service...

One day, after sending off over 35 subject alerts I decided to see whether I could start making the process more automatised. If this post had been around, I would have been galvanised... At any rate, Inspiration numero uno was the realisation that I could automatically post from the Bloglines reader to the Bloglines blog, with very little hassle. In the two seconds it took me to try this feature, visions of tagging the posts and then setting up RSS feeds based on tag filters which were sent automatically to patrons filled my head. So I was a little crushed when I realised, very quickly that part 1b of the cunning plan wouldn't work as Bloglines had no tag feature in the blog. Yes, I did a double take too; I felt betrayed... Could I look Bloglines in the eye again? Needless to say my addiction to RSS is so strong that I jumped straight back into its arms. However, things has changed between us. I secretly started investigating other RSS readers...

This post examines Bloglines vs Google Reader. Most of his arguments didn't persuade me one way or another- the River of News feed isn't that relevant for my needs- but then I saw the Share This feature. (Though no mention of tags?) This could be what I was looking for. The things is that I'm not the world's biggest fan of Google. In fact I had managed to stay away from any type of Google account till my favourite mailing list migrated. So now Larry and Sergey have my data. And I'm not too happy about it. I decided that even if Google Reader had great features I would try and look for another solution to my problem.

I started looking up ways to hack Bloglines. Maybe I would be the one to make it change... This post spurred me on. Sadly as I don't have a TV, the TIVO hack wasn't much use, nor am I addicted to a Blackberry. However, the hack to use the email to send feeds to blog software was interesting, as was the hack to post direct to del.icio.us. Hmmm... The brain started whirring.

Ultimately, though I didn't find a complete solution. Though my enthusiasm has waxed again after reading about ScribeFire; maybe that could hold another piece of the puzzle.

[Update: I'm now using the del.icio.us hack instead of the clippings section of Bloglines for my personal use. (see right hand menu) The words nail and coffin are springing to mind...]

To be continued...

A blog implementation project I’m working on at the moment is using the categorisation capabil

A blog implementation project I'm working on at the moment is using the categorisation capability of WordPress to support SDI for our users. By using categories our users can either subscribe to the RSS feeds for each category, or subscribe to a mailing list powered by the excellent Subscribe2 plugin and select specific categories.

In this way our users are in control of the information they receive and can filter out, at a broad level, those posts that are of no interest to them.

We have our categories listed in the sidebar on our site. The wp_list_categories template tag has the ability to output a link to the RSS feed for a category but the output didn't fit in our layout. With this in mind I needed to come up with a different way of displaying the information.

Rather than create a plugin I decided to use the a custom page template instead. In this way I could construct a page that I could edit the text of the page using the standard tools, and I could also create a list of RSS feeds dynamically, without the need to go through creating a plugin.

I created a custom page template, basically a copy of the standard page template, and then added the following code into the appropriate place.

[sourcecode language="php"]

< ?php
// Get the list of categories
$categories = get_categories('type=post&hide_empty=0&orderby=id');
$site_url = get_option('siteurl');

// Output the list
print '

';

foreach($categories as $category) {
print '

<a href="' . $site_url . '/category/' . $category->category_nicename . '/feed/' . '" ';
print 'title="Direct link to the RSS feed">';
print $category->name . '';
print '<a href="' . $site_url . '/category/' . $category->category_nicename . '/feed/' . '" ';
print 'title="Direct link to the RSS feed" style="text-decoration: none">';
print '

' . "\n";
}

print '';
?>

[/sourcecode]

Users can select from the generated list, the URLs to the RSS feeds that are of interest to them.

My library has recently started talking about implementing new subject guides pages. Stop, Stop! Don

My library has recently started talking about implementing new subject guides pages. Stop, Stop! Don't they realise that I've only just started this blog?! I had envisaged that with usual library dalliance I would at least have time to get my thoughts on the matter clear here before weighing in with balanced arguments. Looks like I'm going to be busy for the next few days reading up on all those articles that I had meant to read ages ago...

In fact, I've been trying to read round 2 e-content problems that we are experiencing, and that I decided to try and resolve (because they're quite cool!)

We run an SDI (Selective Dissemination of Information Service) where basically I have subscribed to as many RSS feeds that I can find and every time I see something useful I send it to the patrons who have registered their profiles in the Outlook distribution lists. Complicated, yes. Efficient, no. I've been trying to work my way round this to make it far far more automatic, as although we have received some good comments, we have a long way to go. It's kind of web 0.5 with a jus de 2.0. It hasn't won a Michelin star yet.

We have a bunch of internet resources and a bunch of subject guides that I update on dreamweaver. They are in three languages and are very unwieldy. They need to be updated. The Head of Reference is obsessed by blogs. I'm not so sure they're the best idea. I just found out that the Head of the Library scheduled a meeting tomorrow about subject guides with one of the area groups of the place of work of joy. Ekk. I just invited myself to that meeting...

So these are my e-content problems that I am trying to resolve. As my time seems to be a little less limited the blog may not quite be so orderly as I hoped now as I try and jot down random scribblings in an attempt to clear my mind. But hopefully this won't matter overly...
