I'd never heard of it before, but there's a beginners programming tool called Scratch that's designed to teach the basic programming concepts. It seems to be run under the auspices of MIT, under the amusingly named "The Lifelong Kindergarten Group". This from their website.....

"Scratch is designed to help young people (ages 8 and up) develop 21st century learning skills. As they create Scratch projects, young people learn important mathematical and computational ideas, while also gaining a deeper understanding of the process of design. "

And now it's available for Second Lifecourtesy of Eric Rosenbaum, and you don't need to be eight years old to use it. Screenshot then details.......

As you can see above, you program things by dragging and dropping blocks, and the blocks contain instructions. When you put the code that this generates into a SL script in a prim, the prim will follow the directions.

The interface is easy to use and pretty intuitive, as you would imagine from its origins.

There's a limited set of instructions to choose from - you can move things around, change color, play sounds and communicate, but much of the more complicated stuff that's unique to SL isn't there yet. It is still a work in development, though, and the creator is asking for for suggestions as to what to include on the blog.

So what did I do with it? And perhaps just as importantly, how easy was it and how long did it take?

Because Scratch makes it easy to move things around, I decided to create a little dancer. Glued a few spheres and flexis together and clicked together a little dance for it. It took about an hour in total, though I'd had a couple of hours playing with Scratch beforehand. If I'd tried to program it by hand it would have taken a lot longer.

Here's a pic of the simple dancer.....

And here's a video of her dancing.

And here's the code - it's a bit top heavy for the things that it does, and it's got too many listens for it to be lag friendly, but it does what it says on the tin. If you want to use it, put it into the root prim of a dancer. Also put the code into a basic prim and click this to broadcast the message to start the dance.

You can also issue chat commands to the dancer - (note the capital letters, they're important) - Shimmy, Sidestep & Twirl.

One of the more glamorous (and well received) of the newer gowns released into the SL universe has been Esmerelda by Kouse’s Sanctum. Weighing in at a hefty 16 pieces, the set includes everything...multiple skirt styles, headband, circlet…everything except shoes. It’s rich and vibrant textures coupled with delicate gold trim make for a set that is rich and appealing, suitable for ladies of every class or rank who wish to look their best.

Before I get deeper into this article please allow me to catalogue all the pieces included in these glorious sets, which, are no transfer, yes mod on prims, no mod on system layers, and all parts are yes copy. Included items are: on system layers: top, long glitch pants, short glitch pants, Gorean free woman undershirt, prim parts: empire line skirt, overskirt/underskirt combo as two attachments, ball gown skirt, slim skirt, delicate flex sleeves (almost 160 prims each!), headband, veil, circlet, short skirt, and cape.

-Takes deep breath- Yes indeed, many, many pieces. One could easily get carried away with all the mixing and matching possibilities in this one. As a note, the boots in these images are the boots from the Dawn set in brown from Avilion Mist, it’s a smashing new release I’ll blog about soon.

In the above image, where you see my big old head displaying the circlet included with the Esmerelda set (this one is Dawn, the pink shade) so proudly, I am also wearing the Eye of Horus (right eye) from Avilion Mist. It was created by Malakh Giles. I highly recommend a peek over at Avilion Mist, it’s chalk full of goodies.

To close, the Esmerelda sets from Kouse’s Sanctum capture many feels; princess, fairy, lady of magic, fairy tale damsel, little pixie, Gorean Free Woman, it can all be found in this box. The members of the Kouse’s Sanctum update group even get a 250L discount off the retail price of these ensembles by wearing their group tags, how fab!

Hey Bisharians! Ever tried traveling over from Majini to Wimbi lately? Here's a suggestion, travel over to the Mangrove beach area and rezz your board to launch from there. Paddle over to the pipelines and have a surf... but what's this? You're bang into the rocks and get blocked? Hehehe, o yes, this is phase one of the changes at Wimbi Island's surf layout. We're making a surf adventure that is basically more like real life surfing. Once complete, you will need to watch for various things in the wave run that could affect the way you surf or injure you too. Wimbi has damage switched on for a reason :)

So for now, phase 1, we have only rezzed the blockers so that you can try and learn to develop that essential overview during a surf that you need to not get affected or caught by these natural dangers :) Let us know your experiences - comment right here and lets hear what you wish improved!

Nicolas and I have been slacking as far as the blog is concerned, but when summer calls, we answer.

Luckily the season provided the inspiration for today's post with the weather oscillating between sunshine and thunderstorms, yellow and grey. These two colours support the point that opposites attract, and while I don't believe this to be true in all interpretations of the phrase, where fashion is concerned it lends itself to some impactful ensembles. This just happens to be one of my favourites.

Marni Grut of Royal Blue provided the base for this outfit with her Lost Ballet tutu. A design like this called for something outside of the standard ballet fare so I opted for an 80's style racer back tank and socks in yellow combined with black accenting to create a, dare I say, Scene Ballerina. Emphasizing this, LAP's new Sugar and Spice poses are all about attitude and definitely bring this look to life.

Nic is wild about hats, so when Kari opened its doors Nic walked out with all three (the other two are bound to appear in future posts). The stitched newsboy cap gives this otherwise casual outfit a dose of chic while the yellow graphic tee from [insert cool name] brightens the look to summer standards. The laces of his shoes (also from Kari) tie this look together for a weathered look come rain or shine.

The pose frames from Lost Angels were a "must" for us and I strongly suggest them for all of you flickrites. Who knew being framed could look so good?

We hope you're enjoying your summer, both the yellow and the grey, and if you can't beat it -- wear it.

The Metaverse Tribune - Lively versus Facebook, says Gartner
Gartner has released a report on Googl

The Metaverse Tribune - Lively versus Facebook, says Gartner

Gartner has released a report on Google’s Lively which argues that Lively is more of a competitor to social networks such as Facebook than to established, large-scale virtual worlds such as Second Life. Steve Prentice, author of the report (whom is also presenting at the Virtual Worlds Forum in October), argues that Lively occupies a ‘middle ground’ between traditional social networking sites and full-blown virtual worlds. He cites Lively’s room metaphor, as opposed to Second Life’s whole world. Further, Lively lacks an economy and only has limited content creation options.

In some ways he is right. Lively is perhaps best described at present as visual chat, and certainly doesn’t match up to the vast functionality offered by rivals such as Second Life and Twinity. In that sense it does have more in common with social networking websites than it does with other virtual worlds: it is perhaps easier to see a user going into a Lively room to chat to their friends instead of using Facebook than it is to see a user enjoying Second Life as a substitute for Facebook.

However, I would argue that all virtual worlds are competitive with all social networking sites. The 2D web and the 3D metaverse are just different ways of doing the same thing: communicating over the internet. Beyond even that, though, it seems to me that the two will merge. We are already seeing this with Facebook. Applications such as Vivaty sit on top of the social graph which Facebook provides. The virtual world and the social networking site will become two different interfaces to the same use case. And that’s also what Prentice is arguing: ‘We believe this could mark the start of a transition to a new kind of three-dimensional social Web.’

Yo apenas si me levanté.

Igual, me cargó.

Obviamente, me equivoqué.

No sé.

Me cansé. -_-

Bye.

I'm still creating, but not that you'd know it.. I've got about a dozen things almost finished and they all have one thing in common - they need scripts fixing.. aargh! I'm not a stupid human being by any means, but this scripting lark has got me beaten. :(

So I haven't been inworld for a while.. I can tell I'm bored as I've just signed up for a thing called Yahoo360. I have no idea what it's supposed to do, but hey, I've got one lol. If you've got an account and fancy making friends, feel free to drop me an invite..

I can't wait to see how it evolves :)

I've also got a myspace account. It's seriously neglected, but it does have the saga of me setting up my gallery last year, I read it a while back and it brought back all sorts of memories..

Again, if you want to come over and make friends, send me the invite.. http://www.myspace.com/alexia_cournoyer.

Yesterday night when I hooked my body to the virtual world of SL I got, as usual, a ton of notices from the groups I belong to. Amongst one of them was an hunt quest from my favorite SL store: Bare@Rose. :D

These games are quite common in SL and similar to an Easter egg hunt if you like. Normally a store owner or some other kind of sim owner spreads across their sim or store several semi-hidden objects... the objective is to find them all (or at least some of them, depends on the rules), and you either get some free stuff with each piece you find or, as was with the case of yesterday's inventive and imaginative hunt from Bare@Rose, you get a complete stunning outfit after collecting all the tread pieces of the love story they created for the hunt.

And you have to admit that the two outfits together look really good !! :D

So, yeah, it was well worth it.

The outfit, according to June, the main creative brain of Bare Rose, is variation on one of their most sold outfits, only in red. And, well, its just stunning, both the male and the female version of them (as B@R stuff normally is), here seen in the also magnificent Japan Tempura Island. :)

Come to thinking about it this week is working out very well for me in terms of nice & free stuff... just this Monday (I think) I got another great outfit, for free as well, from the BareRose lucky chair (the Baron of the BlackLuck). Must be my lucky week... :)

/by Claus Uriza
For my first issue in this blog I wanna tell a story about my audio trips in SL.

Back in the autumn last year I had finally moved into SL in a very modern apartment complex 600 meters up in the air. Then I started checking out the SLMarketplace for audio equipment and ended up with an iTunes radio which was compatible with all the stations I had in my iTunes at lap. Almost like once in RL my apartment was made into a test room with 3 kinds of TVs and now this radio too. I talked to sim owner and she came deeded it 'cos I wasn't owner only renter. I started play with iTunes radio and it worked fine. Then at eve I went down to sim and hooked up with friends there. What I found out was... suddenly I was playing music in whole sim hehe. Luckily sim owner liked the stations I set up ;).

But I had a problem. The radio couldn't handle mp3s so went in search mode once again. I realized I needed to know all about Shoutcasts which is the technique most of SL use for music. But I also needed to be landowner to handle all this myself. I bought 4 parcels and decided to open a media centre. Next step was to get some streamprovider and host. To handle shoutcasts u need an url to handle playlists and to put into ur land settings. I searched the market and found a good host at an affordable prize. Through subdivide land I found out I could run 4 streams on my parcels. I simply wanted the music to change when I entered my bedroom or to play some lounge music at pool area hehe. But omg nothing is very simple at start especially not in SL hehe. 'Cos all this I wanted to play/run from my at that time only computer, a little Fujitsu Siemens lap. I spent a lot of time testing players like WinAmp, SAM Broadcaster and a dozen of others. I needed to be able to run multiple instances so I could have 4 players/playlists running at same time from lap. To run streams in high quality 128 Kbs and stable u need a good download/upload connection and a machine with guts hehe. I realized I needed to order a bigger lap and a better connection. I got a new Fujitsu Siemens Celsius (then SL was more stable too hehe) and got a 8MB/2MB download/upload rate connection. Well to try to make story short few months later I made my media centre Pop Art Lab playing 4 radiochannels myself from 1 single lab! But to avoid timecrossin my lab was runnin 24/7 playing music to the Americans too hehe. I can tell u this... laptops aren't build to run this much. Suddenly my lap started sounding like a frozen frog hehe. The compressor was red hot! And somehow the streams kept stop from time to time and I had a goal. I wanted my channels running stable and to make a pro service. I ended ordering a new desktop Quad Core with guts hehe. Now I can let the machine do the hard work running 24/7 from my basement and lately I went on vacation and it played stable in 5 days or to say 120 hours!.

So welcome to the brave new world today it’s almost possible to run 4 radio stations in superior sound quality from 1 single lap! But if someone out there wants an advice, go get a desktop with horsepower. Beside this u get a more stable SL appearance, well almost like a dream ;).

U can visit my Pop Art Lab here, and u can hear my channels and have fun at my now 6 parcels. In the near future I might have my own sim with 10-20 channels ;).

The discussion with Lauren Hertel and Gary Ritzenthaler , both scholars and online journalism experts of University of Florida, about Second Life was really strucking me. Their presentation has been successfully open my eyes and brain on the possibilities of the future.

However, seems we need to discuss and to ponder or to contemplate deeply on all consequences re: Second Life (SL). SL sounds cool, futuristic and provides lots of 'space' to be explored. The question will be: how can someone manage his/her 'First Life' if he/she has been so busy with SL? What kind of psychological nature people can have due to SL?

For sure, SL will definitely change some human 'nature', change the landscape of social relationships/networks. There will be huge discussions re: the concept of family and relationships.

So far, it is not easy to determine whether SL will provide better life for our 'regular' FL.

The XML-RPC Receiver

[caption id="attachment_108" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="The XML-RPC Receiver "][/caption]

With the completion of the LSL script which is resident in the object shown above, our prototype XML-RPC communication system is complete. It has served as a proof of concept system, but is not fully developed to serve the needs of the artificial life ecosystem we are planning. However, the code used is easily adaptable to our subsequent uses, or uses you may have for that matter. With that in mind, let's examine the code. The LSL script is displayed on our website.

The state_entry() event handler in the default state calls the LSL function llOpenRemoteDataChannel(). The server will respond by calling the event handler function remote_data() right below it. This is the same event handler which the server will call later when XML-RPC messages are received by the Linden Server from our offline application., The event handler determines which type of call using a conditional on the value of the integer argument type. When the value of this argument is REMOTE_DATA_CHANNEL, the assigned channel ID is stored, and also transmitted to our website using LSL's HTTP capability. There the channel ID is stored in a table in our database by the ASP page which is addressed. The offline application accesses that table when it runs to get the channel ID for its message formation.

Note that the state_entry() event handler in the default state is called every time the script is reset, which of course is every time a script is edited and saved when editing with the Second Life viewer. Also, note that in the default state there is an on_rez() event handler. It will be called each time the object is rezzed out of the inventory and it will cause the script to be reset as well.

Once the channel is assigned by the Linden server, and it is receiving XML-RPC messages, it will parse the XML received. It then will call the remote_data() event handler, passing the string parameter and the integer parameter transmitted by our offline application. The LSL script is thus relieved of the requirement of parsing the XML data, leaving that up to the Linden server. As a purely diagnostic check, and to satisfy the requirement that a scripted object must make an XML-RPC reply, the parameters received are simply echoed back. As you recall, the integer parameter is not used in the prototype system, but it must be included in the initial message and the response to satisfy the message format requirements.

Once the parameters are received, they are stored in global variables, and a function is called to distribute the parameters to the AI objects. The two currently identified floating point parameters are still in the CSV string, and would be sorted out by the receiving AI life. Should additional parameters be identified later, they would simply added to the CSV string. This seems simpler, allowing the XML-RPC receiver code to be independent of the eventual number of parameters to be passed,

Note that the parameter values are distributed using the llSay() function. This requires that any receiving AI objects be within 20 meters of the receiver. Considering the size of our ecopod, some sort of secondary distribution system of objects would actually be required to distribute parameter messages to all AI objects so contained.

This completes our series on XML-RPC with .NET and LSL. There is still much to do to develop the AI objects in the ecopod, although that will not be the principal topic in this blog. Instead, we will continue to concentrate on enhancing LSL by adding capability from offline machines using .NET.

/by Speedmaster Bing

Want to control your avatar with something that almost look like a lollipop ?

Today several major IT news sites showed a video of a Japanese woman doing just that. Japanese Geisha Tokyo Entertainment is showing off thier idea.

Right now I can't point you to a short youtube video, so you have to do with a link to Danish Computerworld (Video is in English. Scroll down).

If you think the idea is silly, then let me point you to Nintendo. They seem to do pretty well, selling their Wii.

But since you often walk, or run, in a virtual world, then a lollipop, or hand held controller doesn't quite do it, right?

So Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, have come up with, Cyberwalk, a moving floor.

Size is apx. 6m by 6m, with an active walking area of 4.5m by 4.5m. So I don't think it will find its way into everyone's living room.
So how about something smaller? Well this CirculaFloor seems to fit my room better.

But not sure pets and kids would be safe. And what about running? Imagine the speed the plates have to move around with.

Personally I like this one better. It is called VirtuSphere. You can even roll, to avoid getting hit by something.

And if you bolt a chair inside it, you could probably get the feeling of flying, sailing or driving (my own idea). But that would probably not feel real.

So my very own personal favourite made by Force Dynamics. With Second life about to embrace Havok4, this can only be so much fun.
Oh, and make sure to lower you volume!
If you forget, you will be reminded 10 secs in :)

Cant wait to have one of these at home, and race against friends in Second life :)

While these examples might not be the best way to get around in a virtual world, it demonstrates that efforts are made to get away from the keyboard, and into a more realistic feeling.

Gentle(wo)men! Start up you engines!
