<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The MTi-G GPS-aided attitude and heading reference system from <a href="http://www.xsens.com/"><strong>Xsens Technologies</strong></a> has been specified for a US defence contract. Leading defence contractor ArgonST recently secured a US Government contract for a new generation of reference motion trackers for use on a variety of air and ground vehicles ArgonST selected the MTi-G GPS-aided attitude and heading reference system (AHRS) from Xsens Technologies and ordered more than 100 units covering initial requirement.</p>
<p>The MTi-G addresses the requirement for a low-cost, yet accurate and reliable orientation tracker with a small footprint. Historically such reference orientation data are obtained using tactical grade AHRS, the cost of which proved prohibitive for widespread use. The US Government contract delivers a product capable of accurate location, attitude, velocity and acceleration sensing, that provides wireless delivery of this information to test monitoring locations.</p>
<p>This product provides a measurement capability that surpasses previous systems, operates in difficult environmental situations and significantly reduces cost. "The MTi-G from Xsens proved very suitable for the application", says Donald Chaffee, Argon's Program Manager, "we were impressed about the accuracy and reliability of the product". "We were unable to locate any other product that met our demanding specifications while allowing us to meet our cost goals".</p>
<p>"Moreover, we were very pleased with support from the Xsens team". "We are excited about Argon selecting the MTi-G" says Gerben Groothuis, Director of Sales and Marketing of Xsens. "The MTi-G is the result of many years of development of motion trackers using MEMS inertial sensors". "It proves that we can provide a performance that is almost at par with high-grade inertial sensors using eg fibre optical technology, but at a significantly lower price point".</p>

ScadaRange products are easily deployed to wirelessly transmit data through a centralised base radio station, over a secure 900MHz licence-free connection.</p>
<p>Up to 100 field devices can be polled at user-configured time intervals by a single base radio in a variety of network configurations. Using the industry-standard Modbus protocol over a serial link, data from ScadaRange can be passed through to most Scada system elements including PLCs, RTUs, and Scada hosts. "The ScadaRange wireless process instruments round out Control Microsystems' product offering, providing our customers complete sensor to enterprise solutions", said Steve Goodman, Vice President Marketing.</p>
<p>"With the capability to scale up to as many as 16 wireless instrumentation LANs, each with 100 instruments, ScadaRange easily accommodates future expansion". The ScadaRange product line currently consists of the GL10 gauge level field unit, GP10 gauge pressure field unit, RT10 RTD temperature field unit, SI10 switch-input field unit, SL10 submersible level field unit, TC10 thermocouple field unit, and the BR10 base radio.</p>
<p>ScadaRange Manager is a Windows-based services management software that provides a user friendly environment for field unit configuration and diagnostics. Each unit has a LCD/keypad for local configuration and monitoring. These devices have a battery power source that lasts up to 5 years and an industry leading warranty of 3 years. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://mightor.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/protoboard-package.png"><img height="233" alt="HiTechnic Prototype Board" src="http://mightor.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/protoboard-package-thumb.png" width="240" align="left"></a>This morning the postman delivered a small package from <a href="http://hitechnic.com" target="_blank">HiTechnic</a>, the Lego NXT Sensor folks.&#160; Steve, one of the engineers, asked me if I would be interested in writing a <a href="http://www.robotc.net" target="_blank">RobotC</a> driver for their <a href="http://www.hitechnic.com/contents/en-us/d20.html" target="_blank">Prototype Board</a>.&#160; I said I was, so he told me he'd send one and here it is.&#160; I guess now I have to fulfill my end of the bargain and start producing some code!</p>
<p>The first thing I noticed about this board is the compactness of it.&#160; It has 6 digital IOs and no less than 5 analogue inputs.&#160; The board is also able to provide 3.3V, 4.3V, 5V and 9V to your project via various pins.&#160; I was given the breadboard version (NPT1055), but there is also a version with a small solderable area (NXT1050 on which you can add your projects directly.&#160; The breadboard version measures 25x56mm and has a 16 pin male header on its underside.&#160; It takes a little force to push onto your breadboard. However the little leaflet that comes with it has instructions on how to do this properly so you don't snap or bend it.&#160; Taking it off your board requires the same kind of care.&#160; </p>
<p>I am sure I am going to have a lot of fun with this board and I will keep you updated as I progress.</p>

The <a href="http://www.gentechinternational.com/"><strong>Gentech</strong></a> PSS vane sensor range offers ready-made solutions to switching and interlock applications in construction equipment, vehicle and industrial applications. These sensors are extensively used as handbrake lever switches, stabiliser leg indicators/interlocks switches and swivel seat interlock switches in backhoe and other construction applications.</p>
<p>The PSS vane sensor offers the key advantage of combining the actuating magnet and switch in a single housing, eliminating the need for the design engineers to select and match the actuating magnet and the switch assembly.</p>
<p>A simple ferrous metal shunt, brought into position between the magnet and switch on the sensor housing, is all that is required to change switch status. A suitably shaped chassis member, or linkage to perform the necessary switching function can conveniently supply this magnetic shunt.</p>

<p><span class="BTX">Fans of the television show "24" often watch fictional counter-terrorist agent Jack Bauer wipe out adversary cells even though he is often severely outnumbered. </span></p>
<p>In his favor, he usually has real-time satellite locations of his enemies sent to his personal digital assistant so that he is always one step ahead.</p>
<p>In reality, warfighters do not have such reliable and useful information at their fingertips. Troops on the ground often have to wait several hours for satellite pictures, giving terrorists plenty of time to change their positions or leave the area entirely. Terrorists are quite adept at hiding their locations after acclimating to years of aerial reconnaissance.</p>
<p>If the Tactical Satelite-3 is a success, warfighters will be one step closer to having that advantage portrayed in the TV show. The spacecraft will house the Advance Responsive Tactically Effective Military Imaging Spectrometer, or ARTEMIS, a hyperspectral imager and two other components.</p>
<p>Many forms of camouflage will not fool the hyperspectral scans and will leave terrorists even fewer places to hide. Warfighters also will receive their intelligence in a matter of minutes instead of hours, giving them an opportunity to strike while the information is still fresh.</p>
<p>Thom Davis is the program manager for the TacSat-3. His team of engineers and contractors at the Air Force Research Laboratory here has been working to ensure the hardware is integrated properly and testing some of the components that have never been used in space before. He said that feedback from battlefield commanders has been positive.</p>
<p>"They are very excited this is a capability that they don't have," he said. "They can't wait to give this a test run, and hopefully it can save some lives and make their jobs a bit easier."</p>
<p>The launch date for the satellite is tentatively scheduled for October. The program is programmed to cost about $80 million. Mr. Davis said that costs were kept down by sticking to a small team and not making many changes to the process once they started.</p>
<p>Capt. Jennifer Guarneiri, a test engineer at the research laboratory, has been working on the project for a year. She said that running scripts and testing the payload has been exciting work.</p>
<p>"You uncover new things everyday," she said. "You have to go through the process methodically. All of the work will be worth it if even one life is saved."</p>

<p>The bumph from the school arrived today containing school calender, results, agenda for staff-meeting etc, but all I wanted to see was whether or not I was teaching second years next year. Up until now we taught science on a rota system at Junior Cert level. All the students in the year are split into groups and taught Biology by the specialist Biology teacher, Chemistry by the specialist Chemistry teacher, etc. They rotate after a set amout of class periods to that each term they get to do one complete cycle.</p>
<p>The system sounds good in theory in that the specialist teacher will have a greater enthusiasm and knowledge for each topic than a general teacher. And for the teacher it means much less preparation time, both for theory and experiment. It certainly made my life easier for my first few years.</p>
<p>More recently we have begun to notice disadvantages, and like the little Dutch boy with his finger in the dyke (can't see that phrase lasting much longer in our pc world), once we began to question the system it quickly became apparent to all that it was actually failing the students.</p>
<p>Firstly there was no ownership for teachers over indivdual students, so none of us were particularly concerned with a given student's progress, or got to know their strengths as well as we should have.</p>
<p>Secondly, a lot of time was lost in adminstration during each rotation; results which should have been transferred from one teacher to another often got lost or simply forgotten about.</p>
<p>If the number of periods allocated to each group varied (due to teacher illness or other unforeseen breaks) then one group advanced more than another. This always caused problems when setting a common exam paper at the end of term.</p>
<p>So this year for the first time I get a class to myself at second-year level and will presumable get to hang on to them next year. Which means I get time to try out some of the ideas I have been reading about over the last few years:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Class Blogs</strong>. I hope to be taking advice from Tom Kendall who has <a href="http://msmccarthy.21classes.com/" target="_blank">helped his school</a> set up class blogs for different subjects in Loreto Navan.</li>
<li><strong><a title="etwinning" href="http://www.etwinning.ie/" target="_blank">eTwinning</a></strong>. It would be nice to do a class science project in conjunction with a similar class from another country. It means I finally get to use the forms Conor Galvin gave me a couple of years ago.</li>
<li><strong><a title="scifest" href="http://www.scifest.ie/" target="_blank">Scifest</a></strong>. After going on about it <em>ad nauseum</em> last year we actually had just one team enter. But they won in three different categories (congratulations again <a href="http://www.scifest.ie/tallaght.html" target="_blank">Georgina and Philippa</a>!), so hopefully we can use that to promote the competition further this year. I would hope to use these projects as their entry for their Junior Cert projects the following year.</li>
<li><a title="mindmaps" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mind_map" target="_blank"><strong>Mindmaps</strong></a>. This is a wonderful tool which is I would guess is very much underused. there are lots of different programs out there so choosing one will be part of the research.</li>
<li><a title="youtube" href="http://ie.youtube.com/user/yerrahyouknow" target="_blank"><strong>YouTube</strong></a>. I have yet to upload a video for Junior Cert Science, so knowing that non-Physics specialists will be teaching Physics in the school will hopefully give me a focus to develop this over the year ahead.</li>
<li><a title="sensorsireland" href="http://www.discoversensors.ie/" target="_blank"><strong>Sensors</strong></a>. Developing Investigative learning with the use of data-logging sensors (student led, as opposed to me demonstrating).</li>

<p>Bottom line:<br />
I don't know how much of this I can incorporate but if by the end of the year I have spoken less and listened more than would otherwise be the case I will consider it a success.</p>

<p>Above is a <a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/Breathalyzer-Microphone/" title="Instructions for how to make your own">breathalyzer hacked into a microphone</a> for unobtrusive testing of people's drunkeness (<a href="http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2008/08/breathalyzer_microphone.html?CMP=OTC-0D6B48984890">via Make</a>)  I think that's pretty hilarious.  Also I was pretty surprised at all the different <a href="http://www.futurlec.com/Gas_Sensors.shtml">gas sensors available for electronics projects</a>, e.g.: CO, CO<sub>2</sub>, O<sub>3</sub>, EtOH, and other general air quality stuff (VOCs, NO<sub>x</sub> etc. all lumped together).  I figured these would be expensive and/or sucky.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Efector Dualis O2I will not only read common barcodes and two-dimensional codes, but can also be set to verify the code. Building on the popularity of the Efector Dualis object sensor from <a href="http://www.ifm-electronic.com/ifmint/web/home.htm"><strong>IFM Electronic</strong></a>, the sensor market leader has launched new versions of the Efector Dualis for reading common barcodes and two-dimensional codes. The Efector Dualis O2I will not only read codes, but can just as easily be set to verify the code; a simple task, yet not one always available.</p>
<p>The list of readable codes ranges from most standard one-dimensional barcodes, through the stacked PDF417 barcode to the two-dimensional ECC200 datamatrix and QR codes irrespective of orientation and position. Typical of an IFM Electronic product, the software setup couldn't be simpler. IFM Electronic believes in making it easy to use their sensors, software is a means to that end so they don't believing in charging a small fortune for operating software.</p>
<p>After installation, using the built-in laser pointer for alignment, just a few steps take the user through from the all important lighting setup to the output configuration, while the sensor itself recognises the kind of code it's seeing. Once set up, the code content is transmitted via an RS232 or Ethernet interface. Developed by the leading sensor company, Dualis is not only easy to use but built for the job. Dualis is a stand-alone unit with integrated lighting and it's constructed in a rugged diecast housing with IP67 for use over a temperature range of -10 to +50C.</p>

<p>An "iShoe" insole contains sensors that read how well a person is balancing. The point is to gather information for doctors and to get people to a specialist -- before they fall.</p>
<p>Erez Lieberman, a graduate student who developed the technology while working as an intern at NASA, says a damaging fall is preceded by numerous warnings, similar to how high cholesterol and elevated blood pressure point to a coming heart attack.</p>
<p>"You gradually get worse and worse at balancing," said Lieberman, who studies in a joint Harvard-Massachusetts Institute of Technology health science and technology program.
