So last night I was watching a fascinating show on the incredible advances that are being made in the robotics field, and it got me thinking about science fiction and robot-human relations. It both amused and bothered me that they were presenting all these technologies and scenarios and not even mentioning the implications that will be presented (they said "robots can do chores humans dislike" and I was thinking, "but what if the robots don't like these chores either, resent us, and wish to rebel?")

I read earlier today that the main thing developers think we have on the robots (and maybe always will?) is that they have no free will, and will not be installed with such.

Honda has ASIMO, which it calls "The World's Most Advanced Humanoid Robot" (on the show there were many examples of this type of technology and its current/future applications).

Ray Kurzweil thinks what he calls "the Singularity" (the point when humans transcend biology) will occur soon, and its arrival will herald all manner of strange new considerations for humanity.

I just read at Accelerating Future (among many other insightful posts) that since November, there has been work in Korea to draft a Robot Ethics Charter.

I am also curious to read Daniel Wilson's How To Survive a Robot Uprising (Tips on Defending Yourself During the Upcoming Rebellion (a funny book on a serious topic). Because in movies such as I, Robot this topic is explored. Even though Hollywood is much different from reality, our science fiction has always been a good forum for examining concepts, no matter how outlandish they may seem at the time.

Robotics and the future of artificial intelligence is going to have a huge impact on humanity, and we have to start thinking about these issues now, before they happen.

Slate's Take on Michael Phelps

Slate has its own view of Michael Phelps.

That Phelps cannot dress himself is part of his gentle charm. He is not your average sloppy 23-year-old. Rather, he seems to have stopped developing, in some respects, at about the age he started training seriously and thus resembles a sloppy 11-year-old superhuman. Not without poise, Phelps has declared events related to his record-breaking string of performances "cool," "very cool," "neat," and "really neat." In the glow of his triumph, he faces the camera with something more interesting than real humility (which is pious) or false modesty (which is dull). He's working a kind of confounded ecstasy, ducking his head as if he's slightly shy to feel so good about himself, easing his way into the idea of not trying to stifle his grins.

Isn't our admiring his body half the point of his celebrity? Does not his Sports Illustrated cover shot—which dares the viewer to resist imagining where Phelps' pubic hair should be—suggest that SI wants to put him out to stud?

You Smell Like Rotten Eggs

Every morning for the past week, I've been rolling over in bed and telling Ryan to sniff me.

In the course of my research for a couple of articles, I've learned that (1) a woman subconsciously picks her mate through scent and (2) we become much more outgoing, perky and sassy in the three to four days before ovulation--I'm assuming to attract the best sperm donor possible. But there's one thing that gets in the way of those two things: The Pill.

We use our nose to sniff out baby-making compatibility: Whose genes, in combination with our own, are going to make the heartiest stew?

But those who take oral contraceptives can't seem to make the right match. We're supposed to go for guys who are genetically dissimilar to us so that we'll have a more diverse immune system. On the Pill, our brain thinks we're preggers and seeks out people just like us, because they're more likely to be family and won't pose a threat to our baby-to-be. It's only after we go off the Pill do we finally look in the mirror to say, holy hell, why didn't someone tell me head-to-toe denim was such a big, bad mistake? If you go off the Pill and think your guy's got odor issues, well, good luck to you and your kin.

Men also sniff out women ripe for the picking. As you would guess, they are (1) most sexually attracted to a woman when she's ovulating, (2) not so much when she's on the rag and (3) can barely get an erection if she's got a baby on board (Okay, I exaggerate. I know some guys can't get enough of their oven-roasting wives). But in a study that must have been a continual hard-on for the scientists involved, strippers always got the most attention and tips in that order. What, a pregnant stripper? No, no, just women who are masquerading as pregnant because they're on the Pill. Researchers don't actually know if it's the scent women give off or their tendency to be more flirtatious and fun during ovulation that keep the men aroused.

I asked Louann Brizendine, author of The Female Brain, why we don't all just go off the Pill to improve our moods, and she said, duh, because with it, you could also have two weeks of pissed-offedness, misery and a whole world of pain and bloating. Oh, yeah, I forgot about that part.

So, anyway, I went off the Pill a couple of weeks ago and am waiting for Ryan to roll over one morning and say, "Gee, your hair smells terrific!" Or, for me to wake up one morning and say, "God, Ryan, your shit stinks!" I'm also hoping he'll start leaving tips under my pillow, just for being so fecund.

McCain: Ready to Concede?

As I’ve stated in previous posts, images make a big impact on people. Therefore it is understandable that John McCain’s campaign ads against Barack Obama are a hot topic of debate. Unless you’re living under a rock, you’ve heard about the Obama = Vapid Celebrity commercial. Okay, it doesn’t really make much sense. Barack Obama is a United States Senator, and comparing him with Paris Hilton (who is famous for being rich & sometimes naked) is laughable. So why do so many people have their panties in a twist? Maybe it’s because John McCain is running such a dirty campaign. Sure, a little mudslinging is commonplace in government elections. However, McCain’s ads seem to be personal attacks on Obama’s character rather than the issues he stands for. The main themes of recent ads have been as follows:

- Is Obama Ready To Lead? No!
- Is Obama Just A Vapid Celebrity? Yes!
- Does Obama Think He Is The Shit? Yes!

As you can see, these videos are speculative and don’t really stand up to scrutiny. For a quick exercise in critical thinking, let’s open up our textbooks and analyze these themes. (My English minor is finally coming in handy!!)

1. Is Obama Ready To Lead? There are basically two schools of thought on this issue. A. Obama is a U.S. Senator, he has written 2 books, campaigned extensively in the United States and abroad, leaders of foreign countries are practically endorsing him, and he is eloquent, articulate, and intelligent. If he’s not ready to lead, then who is? B. Obama is 47. McCain is 71. 71 > 47. Don’t you know math!? Obviously McCain has more experience, thus rendering Obama’s 12 or so years in politics null and void.

2. Is Obama Just A Vapid Celebrity? Well, one might argue that Obama gets a lot of face-time in the media. You know, just like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. Don’t get me wrong, McCain is all over the media too. But don’t you get what this is really about? SEX APPEAL. Britney and Paris are sexy, nubile young women. Compared to McCain, Obama is pretty goddamn sexy and nubile himself. Now, McCain supporters will tell you that this is a bad thing. Don’t you want a President who is more than a pretty face? However, don’t listen to those idiots. Everyone knows sex sells.

3. Does Obama Think He Is The Shit? Okay, here’s an obvious flaw about Obama. He’s too inspirational. Yeah, you heard me. Who wants to feel goosebumps down their backs when they listen to their President speak? Not me! I’d much prefer to watch paint dry or listen to a McCain speech. Forget inspirational, bring on the ennui! Let’s face it: Obama is too uppity for his own good and if we elect him as President we are just feeding into his enormous ego.

Okay, class is over. Your homework is to watch this hilarious & factual video and write us a comment of no more than 500 words about WHETHER OBAMA IS READY TO LEAD. Bonus points if you use the key phrases "Keating Five," "Miss Buffalo Chip," and "Prescription Drug Addiction." Due November 4^th, 2008.

Kevin Costner must have been elated this past week when a couple of journalists requested interviews on the eve of the release of his new feature - "Swing Vote".

After all, no one has been much interested in the faded star in recent years.

A couple of clunkers - "Waterworld" in particular - just about sank his career. However - "Dances With Wolves" - proved he either has real talent or was just a flash in the pan.

Hankering for some of that old magic, Costner was inclined to forgo on rustling up outside backing for the political yarn; instead, he opted to fund the project himself to the tune of $21 mil.

"I'm no fool," he smugly remarked to one local reporter.

On the contrary.

Judging by the lukewarm reviews, it appears Costner may be left with a heap load of fool's gold!

Maybe the likable thespian should just focus on acting. If, he can find a vehicle like - "The Tin Cup" or "No Way Out" - to skyrocket his career back into the stratosphere, that is.

Otherwise, he may end up a B-list actor (God forbid) on a myriad of mediocre cable shows in the future.

Seasoned stage actors co-starring in "Robin Hood" put Costner's acting skills to shame...

Business Ad or Sex Ad?

I was flipping through a professional association's quarterly magazine, when a very odd advertisement got my attention. In a full page ad, woman dressed in business attire, with stiletto heals, sitting on a piece of luggage located on the side of the road in a desert, typing on her laptop. Large print words of "Consolidate. Optimise. Expedite."

First thought, was that the ad was for one of those "professional" companionship services. The woman is depicted as a professional, yet with a slight sexual undertone as her incredible legs are full displayed, not crossed, and she is wearing some rockin stiletto healed sandals. She also has been positioned in the typical damsel in distress scenario of being stranded on the side of the road. Obviously she is waiting her prince charming to roll up in his company Lexus.

Then I saw the company's name, Natural Insight. Wow. Next thought that it was a breast implant manufacturer ad. The key phrases where "Consolidate. Optimize. Expedite". Doesn't that translate into a two for one sale of high quality fast delivery of silicone?

Upon further reading, the company is actually supose to offer managment solutions. Wow. Didn't get that at ALL from the ad. Even after reading the small text which describes how the company "manages peope, organizes places, and scheudale projects", I was still stuck on the sex idea.

When a company chooses to create and publish an ad which is suppose to highlight thier key features, they need to really ask themselves "What image am I trying to project?" "Is the image clear and a true reflection of the company?" If the answer is NO, then the ad is a bad investment.

I also had to question the professional association's intent of the advertisement. Does no one in the organization care what people draw away from reading thier publication? Does no one review the ads for consistency with how the organization and ALL of it's members want to be represented as? If you plan to publish something that links not only you as professional, but on the behalf of an ENTIRE organization, better double check those ads.

After looking at Natural Insight's ad, I have come to conclusion that the company does not know how to effectively utilize thier revenue, not intune with thier consumers, ran by a bunch of old, arrogent, sexist men, and have no marketing department at all. As a buisiness owner, I would never initiate contact with a technology company who has such a poor display of services.

The Google Killer?

Doubtful. Apparently the gents behind Cuil are ex-google employees who claim they can search 3x the amount of sites as Google. I don't see these guys dethroning King Google, but I've been wrong before.

I will say Cuil beats Google in sex appeal. Much better looking site.

Memoir? So Old-Fashioned!

Who needs a memoir when you can record your life 24/7 and sell it for a hefty price? Provided you've got the rack and stack of course. Hot images or 200+ pages to read? No brainer! In this image dominated-culture, memoirs seem so quaint as to be found in antiquarian bookstores. Do you really want to read about Kim Kardashian and her fabulous DASH clothing store? So, what's a girl to do when she's got but looks to offer, a hunger for fame and groupies mesmerized by her derriere? Why, by jolly I got it! We film her in all her backside glory, with a family member thrown in once in a while to give the impression this family is worth of celebrity.

Summer TV is buzzing with reruns, many of which are celebreality shows like Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Tori & Dean, Denise Richards, and Living Lohan, to name a few. Soon to join this fest of selling your soul to the camera (remember when a still-camera was thought of as stealing one's soul? I'm beginning to agree with tribal folk on this), albeit late but i bet with a bang, is the one and only Pam Anderson. Anderson has been appearing in a slew of magic shows this past year and we can only surmise either the sales of her two 'novels' were disappointing, or she's just an exhibitionist, hungry, attention whore who wont quit till she's 90, damn it! Or both!

It's hard enough to write a simple fictional piece based loosely on one's family let alone a memoir but to let a camera crew into your bedroom takes the gold for the Who Can Show More competition. We've gambled it all on sweet ol' reliable Pam.

I got another weekend invite to the Outer Banks. This time I managed to not decorate the coast with my entrails and bile.

I was driving east down 64 with my windows down, drinking a smoothie, when it hit me that it was time for Stephany. I pulled out my polka dotted head scarf that I wear at the beach and wrapped it around my head, dawned my giant sunglasses, rolled the windows all the way down and blasted Heart's Crazy on You. I went incognito all the way to the coast. And if anyone were to ask, I was Stephany Goldberg, or Stephany Berry if she didn't feel like being Jewish.

You see, Stephany is my alias. She is another product of my never ceasing boredom. She has a Y instead of an IE because people are forever putting a Y in my first name. I developed Stephany years ago as a one dimensional alias that would present herself when creepy people asked for my name. Since then she has developed in a three dimensional, living and breathing human being with a detailed background and specific interests.

She has got an attitude that can't be quelled. She doesn't kiss and tell, but is a giant flirt. She digs 70s and 80s music--Hall and Oats, Michael Jackson and especially that song, "Holiday Road" from National Lampoons. When she isn't paying, she likes expensive vodka and tequila. She's 23, graduated from State with a degree in marketing and works at a PR firm in downtown Raleigh. She's a Jew when its convenient to her and she can be a downright bitch. She constantly has to think on her toes. She likes to be witty and mysterious, but also ruthless and blunt. She doesn't give out her number and rarely accepts yours.

Bringing out Stephany often is tough because it needs to be done strategically. Having her make an appearance at places like 519, which I frequent a lot, doesn't work because the same crowd goes there time and time again. Stephany prefers not to be recognized. It works best when out alone or where there is a lot of people I do not know.

It had been awhile since I had seen Stephany. I missed her and her "devil may care" attitude, so I let her stretch her legs a bit and get comfortable in her skin again. All along the ride the 80s were blasted: Journey, Tears for Fears, Corey Heart, The Cure and Madonna. It's all attitude and Stephany has it. She waves carelessly to the boys who pass in supped up trucks and to the inmates working on the side of the road. Stephany relies on sex appeal for almost everything she does. She has a tendency to speed and hides behind her giant sunglasses. Time flies quickly when you're someone else.

Two and half hours later, Stephany pulled into Manteo just as the sun was indolently slipping away into water surrounding the bridge. The pink sky faded to purple, the expensive beach houses lit up and Stephany decided it was time to go and quietly slipped out the window when I wasn't looking.

Stephany is a fun girl, but can only be handled in small doses. If you don't have alias I recommend developing them.

Well, the ta ta's had a little somethin' to do with it...

A double-decker sightseeing bus roared around a corner just off tony Rodeo Drive and caught my appreciative eye.

One whole side of the vehicle - packed with rollicking tourists - was splashed with a studly shot of All-Star quarterback Tom Brady alighting from a helicopter with a bottle of "smartwater" in his clenched hand.

Must have been one of those sizzling hot nights!

On the reverse side of the carrier, Tom gets down 'n dirty with rough 'n tumble team-mates, primed and ready to go.

Ah, that smart water.

The trendy liquid not only quenches the thirst, but adds a bit of zip to boot.

Used to be, Gatorade was the "after-drink" of choice to restore electrolytes after a strenuous work-out.

One problem, though. The lime or cherry-colored magic water was packed with a mountain of sugar! 28 grams, or so, to be exact.

Now, dudes-in-the-know, grab the intelligent stuff.

Must be somethin' else lurking inside that sensual-looking designer bottle.

If the potent potion can keep me up (!) and capable of carousing all night with blond bimbo babes - like Tom boy - then order me a carton, please!

CSU braucht Merkels Sex-Appeal

Die CSU hat sich jetzt in Nürnberg für die heiße Phase des bayerischen Landtagswahlkampfs aufgestellt. Doch es fehlt ihr erkennbar an jenem politischen Sex-Appeal, der sie früher ausgezeichnet hat. Ein Glück seufzen viele in der CSU, dass wir wenigstens noch eine Angela Merkel haben.

Stellenweise ist es saukomisch:

Merkel geniest auch in Bayern hohen persönlichen Respekt, ist mindestens so geachtet wie Huber und Beckstein, vielleicht sogar beliebter. Denn das Duo Huber/Beckstein besitzt nun wirklich keinen politischen Sex-Appeal.

Es ging offenbar deftig einher beim CSU-Parteitag. Mancher mag auch verschnupft reagiert haben, doch Sex-Appeal & Huber & Beckstein - auf keinen Fall ohne die Kanzlerin!
