Você se lembra da história da Branca de Neve? Pois é, simbolo máximo da vaidade, a milênios, o espelho exerce um grande fascínio sobre o homem. Mas já vai longe o tempo em que ele era usado apenas para refletir a imagem humana.

   O espelho tornou-se um objeto decorativo e funcional e saiu de vez de dentro dos armários, de trás das portas e dos habituais banheiros e lavabos. Ganhou vida própria e se espalhou por outros ambientes.  

   Encontrados em diversos formatos, tamanhos e acabamentos, compõem a decoração dando amplitude aos espaços. Mas podem ir muito além ajudando na criação de novos recursos visuais como simular aberturas ou para criar um  clima mais romântico e intimista.

   A opção pelo uso do espelho deve ser bem planejada, tendo sempre em mente o efeito desejado, pois o que está sendo refletido compõe a decoração do fundo do espelho, causando um efeito duplo no campo de reflexo. Atenção, também, para a iluminação. Evite o foco direto, pois é difícil controlar o reflexo produzido.

   Nas áreas tradicionalmente úmidas como salas de banho ou saunas, o ideal é o espelho com película antiembaçante. Fabricado com um adesivo térmico de poliéster que permite um pequeno aquecimento da superfície evitando a condensação do vapor de água. Aquele conhecido efeito embaçado que fica após um banho quente. Pode ser ligado diretamente na energia elétrica ou no sistema de iluminação do próprio espelho.

   Já os espelhos de aumento são mais indicados para refletir pequenas áreas. E são muito úteis na hora de fazer a barba ou a maquiagem. Podem ser retráteis para economizar espaço ou ficar sobre a bancada.

   Para prolongar a vida útil de seu espelho, na hora da limpeza, pano úmido e água são suficientes. E na fixação dos sem moldura, opte por colas de silicone neutro. Evite as com solventes ou componentes ácidos. Ou use fita dupla face. Assim você estará contribuindo para evitar o aparecimento de manchas escuras que são resultado da oxidação da camada de prata que compõe o espelho. Pois, uma vez iniciado, o processo não pode ser detido ou interrompido.

   Espelhos são pequenos pedaços de sonho. E além da função decorativa ou meramente reflexiva, de acordo com o Feng Shui, o uso de um Baguá com espelho no centro, colocado acima da porta de entrada pelo lado de fora, ajuda a barrar as energias negativas.

After Mason had a couple of good poops (no crying and an excellent consistency!), I decided to get serious with homemade baby food preparation.  I picked up a couple of tasty organic summer squash and a few organic apricots on my weekly visit to Whole Paycheck Foods, and I headed home … at which point I met face to face with the dilemma I had been dancing around for the last few weeks.  In what type of vessel would I be freezing this food?  With all of the talk about the dangers of the plastic products surrounding us in this modern world, should I nevertheless take my happy organic baby mush and freeze it in some Chinese plastic ice cube tray?  Frankly, I’m sure there would be no harm in doing so, but were there any other options?  After all, I didn’t even own a Chinese plastic ice cube tray, so I’d have to buy one or beg for one on Freecycle, and that just didn’t make sense.  Luckily and not surprisingly, however, there was another option!  After finding these cute red silicone ice cube trays online, I called our nearest Sur La Table and had them set a two-pack aside for me.  And what’s so great about silicone?  Well, mainly just that they haven’t positively identified any truly harmful substances in its production, and – considering the extreme temperatures it can withstand – it must be substantially more stable than most plastics.

Full steam ahead (literally) with baby mush preparation, I steamed my squash (one yellow and one zucchini) in a pot and warmed my apricots in a cast-iron pan before tossing them (first the squash, then the apricots) into the food processor.  Pretty easy, actually.  After freezing the mush in my new trays, I got these cute, little, space-age food cubes, ready to heat any time for a meal.  I even tried a couple myself.  Not bad …

And Mason liked it … a lot!  He gobbled up every bite of a squash cube I melted along with some sweet potatoes from a prior freezing episode.

But I promised you cool gear, and that probably means more than just ice cube trays, right?  Well, my other find last week was a BPA-free sippy cup sampler sold by The Soft Landing.  Since I had no idea where to start when it comes to the almighty sippy cup, and since I figure a variety of cups will prevent overload from any one contaminant from any one particular brand of cup, this seemed like a really good option for us.  The package arrived, I carefully opened each individual cup, read the instructions, washed and/or soaked and/or scrubbed the cups as needed, and settled down to watch Mason try to suck water out of the bottom of each cup and entirely ignore the sippy spouts he would actually need to engage.  Do the instructions come in baby talk for him, too? 

Finally, a tasty 20-minute adult recipe I prepared tonight with some of our leftover CSA veggies:  What does one do with some chard, a few potatoes, an onion, and a couple of carrots?  By themselves, these sad veggies looked like a Polish peasant’s dinner, but add some spices, some jalapenos from the garden, and some canned wild salmon and stuff the whole thing in a whole wheat pita pocket, and you’ve got …

Wild Salmon and Veggie Pita Pockets

• A few carrots, potatoes, or other root veggies
• Onion and/or garlic
• A couple of jalapenos or other hot peppers
• Chard or another dark leafy green
• Canned wild Alaskan salmon (low in mercury)
• Spices to taste, such as salt, pepper, cumin, and oregano
• Pita pockets
• Olive oil and/or butter 

Chop the root veggies into bite-sized chunks and throw into a pot of boiling salted water for about 15 minutes or until done (but not too mushy).  While these are boiling, chop onion/garlic and peppers and sauté in olive oil and/or butter for 3 minutes or until the onions are translucent.  Add chard and cook until it wilts.  Drain the root veggies and combine them with the chard mixture, a can of salmon, and the spices.  Lightly toast the pita pockets, stuff them with the mixture, and enjoy!

The basics:  The prime function of the humidor is to keep everything inside it at 70° F and 65-70% humidity. this can be done many different ways. Certain humidors are outfitted with boxes filled with sponges and a water solution is required to keep the humidity. There are others that use silicone packs or pockets to regulate. Some products do all the work for you but some require that you buy a hydrometer/thermometer to help regulate the atmosphere.For smokers with 5 or more cigars this is the way to go. Depending on the amount of cigars will depend on how big you need to go. Think of the humidor like a self-storage place. You have different sizes and styles depending on your needs. The least extra space the better. You want to get your money's worth out of the space. If you have 20 cigars at any one time, you don't want a humidor with the capacity of 100 or 50 cigars. That is just too much dead space to humidify. You will want a humidor that hold 25-30 cigars leaving enough space to move cigars around.

Temporary holding of cigars is a quality issue. If you plan on smoking the cigar you have in a few days and depending on your location in the world, you could leave it in the bag given to you at the cigar shop. Now if you live in a part of the world such as the Sahara desert or the Australianoutback you might want to take more precautions. The best thing would be to purchase a travel humidifying packet when you buy your cigar and simply throw it in the bag. If you forget, no worries, take a sandwich plastic baggie and lightly roll you cigar in it and then place that in a larger bag that has a zip close top. Add a rung-out paper towel to the bag and seal the bag. Place the bag in a cool dark place for the few days until you smoke it. You should check it about 6 hours before your smoking session to ensure that it is still moist. Don't worry if the cigar seems squishy or too moist. Just leave the cigar out for an hour or so until it drys out a little. If it feels a little stiff and crackle-e take the paper towel and re-soak it but this time use hot water. This will increase the relative humidity rapidly.

Bebida turca que promete aumentar os seios vira mania na Europa

Uma bebida fermentada turca, consumida especialmente no inverno com fins terapêuticos (ficar bêbado = terapia), está atraindo a atenção de europeus de várias partes do continente. Essas pessoas não estão interessadas em saúde, mas em ficar bêbadas. É que o drinque, chamado "boza" (isso me lembra bozano, aquela marca cafona de creme de barbear), agora ganhou a fama de aumentar os seios femininos (hahahahahaha! Bom, melhor do que a técnica desta aqui).

A porta de entrada da bebida é a Bulgária (e eu que achei que fosse pela boca, hein? Vivendo e aprendendo). Depois que o país passou a integrar a União Européia, as taxas de importação foram abolidas, e o preço despencou. Muitos homens estão viajando até a Bulgária para garantir sua garrafa - que darão de presente a suas esposas e namoradas (deve ser mais barato do que silicone e mais fácil de conseguir do que um morcego, realmente).

Sadik Vefa, da quarta geração de comerciantes de boza - a loja dos Vefa foi fundada em 1876 – não confirma o efeito "aumentativo" do produto (ele diz que teria percebido as alterações em sua própria mãe (e na esposa dele? Cara estranho...)). Mas enalteceu outras qualidades benéficas para a saúde.

A boza contém vitaminas A, B e E. Durante o processo de fermentação, ela produz ácido lático, que ajuda a digestão (Ah, as mulheres ficam com peitos de grávidas! Agora entendi...). Vefa diz que é a primeira vez que ouve falar sobre o suposto poder estético da bebida nas mulheres - apesar de a boza ser conhecida há 900 anos. O que se sabe é que ela aumenta a produção de leite em mulheres grávidas (Não disse? Ah.... e tb falam isso da malzbier).

O doutor Savaş Çömlek declarou ao "Turkish Daily News" que pode haver um aumento dos níveis de prolactina, o hormônio responsável pela produção de leite - daí o crescimento dos seios (ou seja, além de maiores, eles ficam cheios de leite.  Deveriam vender o boza junto com cookies). Ele acrescentou que morangos também são capazes de provocar o mesmo efeito (hahahaha, taí uma dica que poucos sabiam!! Bora trocar o silicone por morango!)

O departamento de engenharia de alimentos da Universidade de Uludağ em Bursa, na Turquia, está desenvolvendo uma boza light (hahahahahaha!!! Será que esta daí dá leite desnatado?).

Ma la Germania e’ il paese con piu’ capacita’ solare installata al mondo ed il terzo produttore di pannelli solari dopo Cina e Giappone.

Il ministro dell’ambiente Tedesco indica che le energie rinnovabili in Germania rappresentano quasi il 7% del consumo energetico del 2007, il doppio che nel 2003. L’industria delle energie rinnovabili ha prodotto un fatturato di €25 miliardi nel 2007, un fatturato del 10% superiore rispetto al 2006, il quadruplo rispetto al 2000.

La produzione di componenti per sfruttare le energie rinnovabili sta per diventare un cavallo di battaglia dell’industria tedesca, permettendo alle citta’ tedesche di esportare beni richiesti in tutto il mondo, di migliorare l’ambiente, di rimpiazzare le importazioni e di creare lavoro e ricchezza. In Germania il numero di addetti in energie rinnovabili aumentera’ da 250,000 addetti nel 2007 a 710,000 nel addetti nel 2030.

La maggior parte dell’elettricita’ in Germania proviene da impianti a carbone e da impianti nucleari Gli impianti a carbone sono impopolari a causa del numero elevato di gas serra emessi. Gli impianti nucleari sono impopolari per la possibilita’ di incidenti catastrofici. Cosi’ nel 1991 la Germania ha adottato una legge che incoraggia la produzione di elettricita’ da fonti rinnovabili che venga immessa nella rete elettrica. Questa legge e’ molto popolare per la maggior parte dei Tedeschi che sono favorevoli alla creazione di nuove tecnologie per le energie rinnovabili.

La legge dice che l’elettricita’ prodotta da fonti rinnovabili deve essere acquistata dalle societa’ energetiche con tariffe particolarmente generose che regolano i prezzi per i prossimi 20 anni. Gli impianti fotovoltaici montati sui tetti delle case, ad esempio, possono vendere elettricita’ a €0.49 per Kw/ora, circa sette volte il prezzo all’ingrosso, fino al 2027. Questo prezzo fisso incoraggia gli investitori e rimuove incertezze per gli investimenti.

Le societa’ elettriche che pagano in piu’ per l’energia rinnovabile passano il costo ai clienti nelle bollette elettriche. Il costo extra e’ di circa un centesimo di euro per KW/ora, un aumento medio di €3 a bolletta. Il costo complessivo per tutti i tedeschi e’ di €7.7 miliardi nel 2007, ma forse non e’ un prezzo troppo alto da pagare per avere un’energia pulita.

Tuttavia, c’e’ un problema di scarsita’ di silicone puro, il materiale principale per la costruzione di pannelli solari. Nel 2003 un chilo di silicone puro costava £25 al chilo, oggi costa $400 al chilo. E’ quindi necessario trovare nuovi materiali e sistemi efficienti per catturare e produrre energia solare. Recenti ricerche tecnologiche stanno portanto offimi risultati: vedi qui.

1998. amanda hesser of the ny times writes in the food section about the wonders of non-stick in the kitchen, popularizing the silpat in america. it is noted in the article that the introduction of silpat in the culinary kitchen was to replace parchment paper, that was only used 1-2 times, with a material that could be reused up to 2000 times.

so how much better are these silicone materials vs. paper? silicone vs. aluminum?

parchment paper can come from bleached (white) or unbleached (brown) pulp sources. bleached paper has been known to contain levels of dioxin. from the epa announcement in 1990 on reducing on the dioxin levels in bleached paper:

Dioxin is an unwanted by-product created by the manufacture of some chemical products, by certain combustion processes and by treating wood pulp with chlorine bleaching processes to make white paper.

Dioxin is a highly toxic chemical and is a probable human carcinogen. Dioxin persists in the environment and can accumulate in the tissue of fish, other wildlife and humans. It has caused cancer, liver dysfunction and toxic effects in laboratory animals.
