Underwhelming, is how I would describe my feelings towards this weeks trailers. We start with the mediocre Jim Carrey vehicle Yes Man, followed by Saw V (Can't believe they're still making these, and isn't that guy dead?). Then we have a film I have never heard of called The Brothers Bloom, which looks to be the one redeemable film of the bunch, and finally How to Lose Friends and Alienate People.

Yes Man

[dailymotion id=x68pp1]

The premise does not sound very interesting, and while I love Jim Carrey's voice acting - and some of his normal roles as well - he is, for the most part, not my style of comedy. On the other hand it has Zooey Deschanel and she is looking hilarious so that has to count for something. I'll end up watching this, but I see no reason to see it in theaters.

Saw V

[dailymotion id=x68nym]
I actually really liked the first Saw film, which is odd considering I hate all things horror, and in no way enjoy gore. It was the twist at the end which made it for me. The second film was not bad, but the third was junk and I didn't even bother with the fourth. So I don't think I will bother with this one either. The teaser doesn't say much and I honestly don't see what they could do to revitalize the franchise.

The Brothers Bloom

[dailymotion id=x68l2z]
This looks pretty awesome. It has a great cast, interesting premise, and some pretty funny scenes. I'm not even put off by the ridiculousness of a break dancing and skateboarding Rachel Weisz. Con movies are great, and comedy ones which aren't afraid to look foolish are even better. The plot seems easy to figure out, and I think I already know how a twist could go but I don't see that having any effect on my outlook.

How to Lose Friends and Alienate People

[dailymotion id=x68akx]
I feel like groaning, it seems like a good response to this trailer. I really enjoy Simon Pegg, he's a funny guy, and Megan Fox looks better than ever here, but I cant get past the mediocre plot. Not to mention it costars Kirsten Dunst who ranks number one on my list of actors I least enjoy watching. I'll probably end up watching this anyways because I watch most films, but I probably won't enjoy the majority of it.

I disagree! I just happen to really enjoy that dudes work.

Think about it.

Shaun of the Dead? You laughed your ass off. That is, without a doubt, one of my top 5 movies of all time. Hell, I was Shaun for halloween.

Hot Fuzz? EVERYTHING that a good mocking movie should be. And he kicks an old lady in the throat.

Run, Fat Boy, Run. Despite David Shwimmer directing it, funny ass flick.

HOWEVER, there was life before zombie flicks for Simon Pegg. He was in a show called "Spaced". I ran into the show when I was in Scotland for spring break one year.

Basically, simon's character needs a place to stay, and he winds up pretending he's in a relationship with a girl named Daisy, to move into a nice place that requires a "working couple". no singles, fooker.

Anywho, the fiance bought me the box set of said tv show for muh birfday, but it's a region 2 disc. the US is region 1. luckily, i'm enough on an anglo-phile that i would own a multi-region dvd player.

HOWEVER, the boxset is being released for region 1, ANNNNNNNNNNNND they're playing it on BBC America.

seriously, funny as balls. the paintball episode and free form art episode are CLASSIC. you cant call yourself a simon pegg fan without owning that show.

PWNED!

Simon Pegg's latest film also stars; Gillian Anderson, Jeff Bridges and Kirsten Dunst and is about A British writer who struggles to fit in at a high-profile magazine in New York. Based on Toby Young's memoir "How to Lose Friends & Alienate People", the film is due for release in both the UK and the US on October 3rd and looks very funny indeed.

After the downbeat -- though ultimately hopeful -- The Children of Men, I had planned to cleanse my palette with Cold Comfort Farm. However, I ran out of time on the flight to Shanghai, so it was up to a British action comedy -- Hot Fuzz -- to do the trick.

Which it did quite nicely. The film reunites Simon Pegg and Nick Frost of Shawn of the Dead fame -- already a good start -- and surrounds them with a killer cast of Jim Broadbent, a smarmy-as-can-be Timothy Dalton, Edward Woodward, and Paddy Considine.

Plenty of laughs and solid scenery chewing, though at nearly two hours the poor plot was stretched a bit thin. More ups than downs as they say. Zombies would have helped, of course.

Spaced, the TV show created by Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright before they did Shawn of the Dead and Hot Fuzz (and Run Fatboy Run) finally comes out on Region 1 DVD tomorrow, July 23. The show aired in 1999-2000. I TiVo it whenever it pops up on BBC America but I'm pretty damned stoked finally getting the DVD.

As with Shawn and Fuzz, the style of Spaced is very silly and loaded with pop-culture and movie references: references not only in dialog but also in film making style.

Here is a clip from one of my favorite episodes:

Oh and did I mention they talk about Star Wars a lot?

For more about Spaced, go to the wikipedia entry (natch) or buy the DVD set here.

“21” (PG-13):
In this slick, sorta likable thriller (loosely based on a true story) a couple of MIT kids put their mad math skills to the test and try to conquer the blackjack tables of Vegas. But even if they’ve got the numbers in control, they can't keep their bastard professor (played by bastard Kevin Spacey) in check. And, well, complications ensue. Not bad. Not great. If this movie were a blackjack score, it'd be, um, like a 17. GRADE: B-

"The Last Winter” (R):
So M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Happening” didn’t really do it for you as an environmental horror film? Well, you might want to try this nasty little film about a group of oil drillers who are either being stalked by supernatural forces or going mad in the isolated Alaskan terrain. The movie's mostly abstract as to what's actually happening. It's really just one big excuse to host a scathing political allegory about America's dependence on oil. So, you know, a horror movie for libs like me. But also a pretty scary flick. The cast is lead by “Hellboy’s” Ron Perlman and James LeGros. GRADE: B+

“Spaced: The Complete Series”:
In the late ’90s the BBC had this really funny sitcom about a motley group of people who all lived together in an apartment. The good thing about this arrangement was instead of Courtney Cox or David Schwimmer, it included the not-yet-famous Simon Pegg (of “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz”). The series was actually the genesis of Pegg's comedic team (Edgar Wright and Nick Frost were also part of the series). The cheeky tone and zippy pace of the show will appeal to anyone who loved Wright and Pegg's next few films. This DVD of the complete series is the first time the show will be available in the U.S. Features commentaries by long-time “Spaced” fans Quentin Tarantino and Diablo Cody. GRADE: A

"Vampyr" (Not rated): Danish filmmaker Carl Theodor Dreyer knew how to get under people's skin. His "The Passion of Joan of Arc" was an hour of extreme, almost unbearable, close-ups followed by a graphically brutal climax. And this 1932 silent horror film, his latest release on the always excellent Criterion Collection, is full of creepy, crawly images that'll stay with you long after. GRADE: A

Perhaps not in keeping with the film aspects of my blog, but nevertheless I felt it necessary to spew love for this amazing show.

Spaced. Written by stars Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes (or is it Stevenson?) and directed by Edgar Wright, it follows two people, Tim and Daisy, Pegg and Hynes respectively, and the adventures/misadventures they get into as roommates living in a flat in London.

This is the first teaming up of the terrific threesome (ignore that I said that) of Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost. I didn't discover this till post Hot Fuzz, and I'm overjoyed that I did.

This "Sitcom" broke all kinds of pre-established rules that many thought were necessary for a thirty minute show. Too many stylized shots and the audience loses interest. Wright pulled it off flawlessly, and without the in studio laugh track I might add. His use of a single camera to produce cinematic visuals is inventive and interesting. Also Wright employs his now trademark pan transitions.

The greatest part of this show are the references. I can't wait for the DVD's Homage-o-meter just to see how many there really are. These homages include, but aren't limited to Comics, Video Games, Horror, and Science Fiction. The show is basically a geeks wet dream.

Every character is fantastic: Tim the comic book artist, Twist the shallow fashion enthusiast, Daisy the lazy writer, Mike the military wannabe, Marsha the drunk landlady, Brian the crazy artist, and even Colin the fuckin' dog are great.

Check it out. ON DVD JULY 22nd!

One of the themes running throughout this blog, indeed the mission of NewTunes, is discovery. It's usually about music discovery, but this is a special occasion.

Tomorrow, Spaced - the brilliant comedy and original sitcom of Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright - is released on DVD in region one format (which means it'll play on American DVD players).

I originally purchased an all-region DVD player so that I could watch the original, Ricky Gervais-led The Office on DVD (it was only available on UK-friendly, region two DVD for a long time). I picked up Spaced last fall on region two, and, like The Office, it single-handedly justifies the price of a region two-friendly DVD player.

If you like Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz - all done by Pegg, Frost and Wright - then you need to see this. This series, which came out in 1999, was their first work together. It'll also introduce you to Jessica Stevenson - who co-wrote and created Spaced with Simon Pegg.

The premise of the show is two 20-something slackers who pretend to be engaged so they can get a flat. But what it really introduces is an intense cultural reference encyclopedia that compares to, but is far more clever than, Kevin Smith (who provides some commentary on the DVD).

Here's the first episode. It's 24 minutes, and it'll motivate you to want to see the rest. If you're in a hurry, my favorite part is 18 minutes in, when they introduce the character of Brian, the artist who lives below them.

Tomorrow will be a great day, indeed.

It's a very slow news day in the movie world if you're looking to post something not related to "The Dark Knight." Everyone's going total apeshit over the latest summer movie phenomenon, and for good reason, but I want to jump off the Insani-train that's following every bit of information about that flick and focus on something else for about 10 minutes.

And then, trust me, I'll be right back on, eating up everything Batman that comes my way.

So, it's on to Simon Pegg for a while, America's second favorite Brit right now, right behind Ricky Gervais and all his shenanigans. It's seems that Pegg has another tame, more mainstream comedy coming out, this one entitled "How to Lose Your Friends and Alienate People," which kind of upsets me. First, since the title of the latest flick is a bit unorthodox, why don't you have a look at the trailer and see what I mean:

I would be lying if I said this doesn't look entertaining and funny, because it does. Just like "Run Fatboy, Run," which I have yet to see, looks entertaining and funny, but these films just don't have the same appeal and pizazz that his earlier work, his more sincere work did.

I mean, here's the guys who brought us such out-of-nowhere hits as "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz." These weren't, by any means, Hollywood movies. In fact, they were the anti-Hollywood movies, taking on successful, marketable and ultimately over-used and bland genres and turning them on their heads to make something wholly new and exciting. Oh, and don't forget that they were both funny as all hell.

I want this Simon Pegg back.

It takes an enormous amount of comedic and writing talent to take a worn-out genre like Zombie movies or Cop Dramas and make them new again. And that's the genius of Pegg and his trusty group of regulars. Not only was "Shaun of the Dead" a hilarious satire that showed the epic flaws and overused cliches in pretty much every zombie movie ever made, but it also turned those flaws and cliches to its advantage to tell one awesome zombie story. Same goes with "Hot Fuzz," although the plot line is so much more bizarre.

But now Pegg is playing into more mainstream movies, because he's found an audience and a popularity that he didn't have pre-"Shaun of the Dead." When once he was able to fly under the radar and make films that poke fun at the ridiculous standards in Hollywood, now he's joined the Cool Kids' table, only to be sucked into these types of movies.

Once again, I really think "How to Lose Your Friends and Alienate People" looks like it has potential, but where will this all end for Pegg? Will he continue down the road he's on, playing into the tame Hollywood Comedy crowd, or will he get back to his roots and challenge the status quo once more? I'm so upset by this because I really feel like a voice as strong and funny as Simon Pegg's is needed to try and keep a check against production crews that through subpar projects together just to make a quick buck. Movies like "Hot Fuzz" help to get the crowd thinking about how formulaic the cop drama has become, which in turn forces production companies to mix things up a bit.

I'd hate to lose Pegg to the dark side. Let's just hope he's back to stickin' it to the Hollywood bigwigs real soon.

So I woke up with a sore throat, almost no voice and a runny nose, so instead of infecting the entire office with my mystery cold, I was the hero and stayed home. I needed the extra sleep anyway. I rarely take off work, but I gave in today.

However, while eating breakfast and checking email, I remembered that I entered a contest to win tickets to see the Spaced series that is playing at the Alamo Drafthouse downtown. To enter, I had to write an email/essay explaining why I needed to go to the show. And the winners were announced at noon. Here's the background story:

Spaced is a British TV series that is absolutely hilarious. It's the same guys who did Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Well the Ex and I used to watch Spaced before most people on this side of the pond even knew that it existed -- he even bought a regionless DVD player solely to be able to watch this TV series.

They're releasing the series on the 22nd here in the US, and as part of releasing that DVD set, they're showing the entire series at the Alamo - which is like a 7 hour event. AND Simon Pegg, Jessica Hynes, and Edgar Wright are going to be there in person!!!

My Ex entered this contest also, and he and I made a pact/bet. If either of us got two tickets, we would bring the other. Also, if I got tickets and he didn't, he would give me his bass guitar.

Yours truly is now the owner of a baby blue Fender J-Bass, and tickets to meet Simon Pegg on the 27th.

Words cannot express how ridiculously excited I am.

Leia a seguir a crítica do nosso leitor Luiz Magroni.

It's about Dennis Doyle from downstairs' marathon. I shouldn't have played it an hour past my bed time... Now I am three hours past my bed time. It's a fun run! Simon Pegg and his tummy is just hilarious. And there's a mix of love story to it too. Well, it's I think more of a love story but what kept me watching was the idea that in the next few seconds there's always something to laugh about. One picture I still remember was Jake's (Doyle's son) face when Libby's (Doyle's supposed wife but he left her at the altar on their wedding day -- and she was pregnant then -- yeah, really big, showing tummy pregnant) smug fiance was giving his "It's-not-what-it-looks-like" speech in defense of his tripping Doyle during the race. I would have put a screen cap up but I am just too lazy to do that now. Just watch it! I think chicks are gonna love this movie too. Who wouldn't want to see a movie with the lines "I did a stupid stupid thing, but it was only because I thought spoiling your day was better than ruining your life. Does that make any sense?" -- Doyle talking to Libby, referring to why he ran away on their wedding day.

Hey, are there any more Simon Pegg movies there? I have Shaun of the Dead but I haven't watched it yet. I'd google "Simon Pegg movies" but I am just too lazy to do that now. See. I am so lazy that I had to reuse my phrases.

So, it's been released. And I, like a neurotic little duck, have made a timetable in Excel.

Dear ComicCon Schedulers:

What the fuck are you thinking?

Overlapping Whedon's Sing-Along-Blog, Spike and Mike's Gauntlet, and Simon Pegg on Friday would be acceptable if Saturday was jam-packed with awesome. Instead you give us the Masquerade and some Christian Comics mixer? What?

I'm not coming down on the mixer. I'm just saying that I highly doubt there's going to be a lot of overlap between them and the "Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation" which featured an animated short called "Titty Bop."

Shape the fuck up on scheduling and management. I know full-well you're pissing some names off.

I could tell you how to reorganize this, but I don't care enough to do so.

At least Saturday's wide-open for drunken debauchery.

Here come the fuzz! And indeed they came. I haven't seen anything like it before. The movie is one helluva kicking ride! It'll get you laughing in its first five minutes. The dialogues are just brilliant, classic and funny smart. It's about Angel, a too-dedicated London police officer (who doesn't know when to switch off) getting stationed in the country because he is outshining his superiors in the city. Who wanna wipe out a village?! There are not enough words I will put here to describe it. And I am afraid to try and ruin it so you've got to see it to understand what I am raving about! F*ck I am psyched!

For those of you who don't know what Spaced is, allow me to get my friends at Wikipedia to help a bit...

Spaced is a British television situation comedy written by and starring Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes (previously known and credited as Jessica Stevenson), and directed by Edgar Wright. It is noted for its rapid-fire editing, frequent dropping of pop-culture references, and occasional displays of surrealism. Two series of seven episodes were broadcast in 1999 and 2001 on Channel 4.

One Spaced episode was even used as inspiration for the smash hit, Shaun of the Dead. Now the complete series is coming to DVD!

This Complete Series set is everything Spaced's fervent following would demand. Each episode is complemented by the original commentaries as well as newly-recorded gabfests that also feature American friends of the show, including Kevin Smith, Patton Oswalt, Quentin Taratinto, Matt Stone, Diablo Cody, and Bill Hader. There are deleted scenes and outtakes, and, best of all, an hour-long 2007 Q&A with Wright and the cast. A must have!

With all the free time I have now, I think I have seen more movies and TV series this year than in my entire lifetime. I've seen season after season of at least three TV series, House, M.D., Gossip Girl, How I Met Your Mother, Cashmere Mafia, Lipstick Jungle, Greek and my recent favorite, Weeds. I have also kept abreast with the latest movies, thanks to online copyright-UNfriendly technologies...

I realized that I have seen too, a lot of Bollywood/Hollywood fusion type movies lately. From my first taste in Mistress of Spices, my list grew with the addition of Nina's Heavenly Delights, Touch of Pink, Americanizing Shelley and other movies I couldn't remember right now. But till now, I still don't get why they have to suddenly burst into song and dance, circling around trees. Not that Im surprised coz don't we have our own dose of this in our local Filipino movies where the dancers just come out for a production number on the beach (reminiscent of Regal films of the 80s)

My current favorite now is Brit actor/scriptwriter Simon Pegg, who I first saw in a recent film called "Run Fat Boy Run," a touching tale of a man who fights to get his family back by running the London marathon. If it doesn't make sense to you, I suggest that you see it to believe. I then scoured the Net to see more of his flicks. I saw also Hot Fuzz, a police comedy and Shaun of the Dead, a horror comedy flick. I can't quite come out with a jist of the story. Just watch and be entertained. I am absolutely hooked!

The folks at Comingsoon just made my day!

"After many years of working out all the rights and other issues, "Spaced: The Complete Series" is finally being released on DVD in the United States on July 22, collecting all 14 episodes of the series with tons of extras and guest commentaries."

Obviously I've never seen any of this show before, but I'm convinced that Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright, and Nick Frost, when teamed together, can do absolutely no wrong. Therefore, words cannot describe how excited I am to buy this DVD.

No, this is not simply an excuse to print a picture of the stunning Megan Fox (of Transformers) but im sure a certain demographic of my readers wont complain! It is mostly because I'd like to draw your attention to the trailer for Simon Pegg's new comedy and his first big hollywood one at that. How To Lose Friends And Alienate People, not the catchiest title that!It looks really quite funny and aside from the lovely view of Miss. Fox to keep us going until Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, we have the genius that is Jeff Bridges, for me i think that has to be the perfect combination. Check the trailer out here. How To Lose Friends And Alienate People is due out in September.
