When I begin to feel overwhelmed or stressed, I make lists. People underestimate the power of 'to do' lists. Not only do you get organized, you really get an idea of how much you have to do.

Today I had to make a 'to do' list of stories. Not counting the one already sent, I'm working on five stories. My editor at The Fort Pierce Tribune said she's keeping me busy. I told her that's what I like.

However, these stories won't print until next week. The Salvation Army story I worked on today requires more sources for me to contact tomorrow, but my editor said that story won't be published until Tuesday at the latest. As mentioned in my last post, I'm covering the local Obama political rally on Saturday, which means that story will print Sunday.

In addition to getting started on yet another story that will print later next week, I have a lot of background research to do and preliminary interviews to conduct before covering live stories both Tuesday and Wednesday nights. More on those to come.

My editor sent several stories via e-mail today to work on the next few days. Unfortunately, the speakerphone on my temporary cell phone interferes with my digital recorder.

Although I may not always need every interview recorded, it makes me feel secure in my accuracy. I had to rush to Wal-Mart to purchase their cheapest house phone that had speakerphone. However, I found cheap means that the speakerphone cuts in and out, so I have to return in and buy a cheaper one elsewhere first thing in the morning.

I also spoke with the Scripps librarian who helped me get set up with their online article archive system. It will allow me to do the background research necessary to a freelance reporter not covering the same beat every day.

One story my editor offered was to cover a local Obama rally on Saturday. I immediately accepted and told her "a political rally sounds right up my alley."

MG-Wave LED lighting provides longer stable images than other form of lighting, with no deterioration caused by repeatedly switching the light on and off. The Moritex MLNL series of LED line illuminators have been designed for high-performance linear lighting and single-dimensional linear CCD camera lighting. Based upon Moritex' MG-Wave constant current technology, the MLNL series of LEDs provides even illumination, easing the inspection of glass substrates for scratches and other imperfections, as well as the inspection of boards and connector pins and lighting for single-dimensional linear CCD cameras.

MG-Wave LED lighting provides longer stable images than other form of lighting. Unlike other forms of lighting there is no deterioration caused by repeatedly switching the light on and off. Operating across a narrow-bandwidth MG-Wave makes it easy to acquire the contrast critical for image processing. Incorporating small light source elements enables MG-Wave to deliver lighting dimensions optimised to a given application. The MG-Wave constant current detection system reads the signal to control the rated current, which is adjusted to the number of LEDs in every lighting module.

The MG-Wave range also includes high powered spot, direct ring, low angle ring, shadowless, edge backlit, array backlit, coaxial, bar, linear, oblique and parallel lighting LED's as well as power sources and a wide variety of LED lighting accessories.

Moritex LEDs are available in six colours and grouped into over 100 luminance levels. The LEDs that go into Moritex units are always from the same group, ensuring even light output even in larger units. Before leaving the factory all MG Wave LED units are tuned to the same standard performance, ensuring consistency between units.

One of my responsibilities here is to write an extended obituary each week. Basically, this entails

One of my responsibilities here is to write an extended obituary each week. Basically, this entails going through the obituaries that families submit to the paper and finding a recently deceased person who seems somewhat interesting.

But there are three questions I get fairly often:

Is it free? (Yes)

What do I have to do? (Talk to me.)

Why does the paper do this? (For the community.)

However, four out of five times, I get turned down. And the reasons are aplenty. One recent family I called said their deceased loved one had a lot of legal problems, so it would not be good to bring him back into the spotlight. Another family said they were too busy to talk to me. And one daughter said she didn’t want to smear her father’s life through the pages of our paper.

Fair enough.

But there are some families who don’t explain why they don’t want to take part. They just politely decline.

Earlier this summer, my grandmother passed away. But oddly enough, it was one of those times where we truly celebrated someone’s life. I’d like to think if a reporter called me, I would’ve happily participated in the extended obit.

But my mom would’ve happily done it — no questions about it. She thinks it’s a great idea, and she trusts that whoever writes about her loved ones would do a great job. And even if they don’t do such a good job, I’m sure my mom would still be very happy.

I’ve learned something about human attitudes during this process. For one, some people are afraid of what will be uncovered about their loved ones when you ask them questions. Others are interested to see what a reporter will uncover about their loved ones — and they trust that the reporter will be respectful to the dead. And there are those who just don’t want to think about it — I suppose these are the people who avoid problems and run away from conflicts.

Anyway, there are times when I learn more about people than do about reporting or writing, and this is definitely one of those times.

A cursory glance at my Wordpress blog stats reveals that most people who arrive at my site do so by Googling "cardboard cutouts," "cardboard cutouts of Judge Judy," "cardboard cutouts of Oprah," and so on and so forth.

While I enjoy a good cardboard cutout, I am no expert. Not wanting to disappoint, however, I have rounded up a few sources that may help you, dear stand-up enthusiasts, locate the lifesize, paper version of the entertainment personality of your choice, such as this talking(!), motion-activated(!!) Luke Skywalker model:

[caption id="attachment_274" align="alignnone" width="158" caption="Luke, what are you thinking?"][/caption]

I think Oprah and I know a certain little lady who would love this one, but I digress. ... On to the goods!

Lifesize Celebrity Cardboard Cutouts:
As they say on their website, "Congratulations! You have found the largest distributor in the world!" Fair warning, though: The Whitney Houston model (filed, curiously, under 'Americana') has been discontinued.

These people seem to specialize in custom cut-outs (Get one for your sweetheart's next birthday! Nothing says I love you quite like that.) and ... GIANT CHECKS!

These cool cats trade in '50s-themed cutouts. They have Marilyn in 6 styles!

Unfortunately, I was unable to find an online proprietor who deals solely with daytime TV judges in corrugated effigy, but barring any legal ramifications, I feel confident that you can get one custom made.

[caption id="attachment_320" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Bad Barista"][/caption]

While interviewing sources for a story I'm working on for a local publication one group accused another group of something that may or may not be true. In an effort to offer readers balance, I have spent the past two and a half days trying to track down the accused for a comment.

The accused owns a small business in a small town. Every time I call his business he has been out, just stepped out, will be right back, is running errands, just left for the day, etc.

My last three calls to his business, a cafe, went as so: call one-- the barista was rude and hung up while I was in mid-sentence; calls two and three, which immediately followed, were not answered.

Because I don't want to print an untruth, because offering both sides a chance to tell their story is important, because I am not a lazy journalist-- I decided to take action.

I sent a note to my editor explaining my story would be late, but only because I felt we owe Mr. Elusive a chance to respond to the accusation made against him. I packed my laptop and drove to the cafe with every intention of sitting there until the never-around-accused showed up.

I didn't have to do that, though, for the barista behind the cafe's counter is a classmate who didn't remember my name when I gave it over the phone but remembered my face as soon as I walked through the door. I think we have a class together this fall.

"You hung up on me," I said when I arrived.

"I didn't know it was you! People are always calling wanting donations."

"No. I don't want a donation; I want to give your boss a chance to respond to some accusations."

She hung her head.

I ordered a drink and, as she whipped it up, wrote a note to the never-present owner. While writing and waiting for the sugar-free, skim, frozen vanilla thing I didn't really want, the barista/ classmate told me Mrs. Elusive owned the business next door.

I gave the barista the note, she apologized and disappeared in the back. I left and walked next door, arriving in time to hear her explaining to the wife-- a baker-- what the note was about. As it turns out, the wife gave me the evidence I needed to refute the rumor in question.

As things go, Mr. Elusive and his baker wife are only separated from Mr. Wonderful and I by one degree of separation-- they are friends with another couple we know. The husband and my husband have been friends since little league.

The moral: good customer service is priceless in our small, small world.

5 Books I Couldn't Live Without

Go into any clinician’s office (or the offices of most chiropractors who have been in practice

Go into any clinician's office (or the offices of most chiropractors who have been in practice for more than a few years) and you'll see the same thing in all of them: books, and usually, lots of them. Why do we have so many books? I had a student jokingly accuse me of just having them because they "make me look smart," implying they were all eye candy for my bookshelf. He changed his mind when I handed him a few random selections and he saw notes in the margins, broken spines (no pun intended) and bookmarks ad nauseum. Yes, I've read all my books, most of them many times. Hell, I even bought books when I was a student, when they weren't even required, and for the full price in the bookstore!!! Oh my gosh!!! Can you imagine?!

It startles me to find out how many students don't buy books for classes and graduate from school with nothing more than the professor's notes from their classes. Health care information is a lot of gray and often times not very much black or white. Every orthopedics textbook describes a different way to perform or interpret tests, for example. Neurology is constantly being updated and added to. There are always new technique books, anatomy books, soft tissue, diagnosis, herbal and nutritional and radiology books, and the list goes on and on.

Reading a book gives you more information than you had before. More importantly, they usually give you a deeper level of knowledge on a subject you may already know something about. They challenge what you know and what you think you know. They are resources you can pull off the shelf whenever you need them, and you can trust them a heck of a lot more than the information Google finds for you. They are also great patient education resources, allowing you to copy material or sit and read a little with the patient when they need an explanation about something. They have illustrations and photos that speak a thousand words, etc etc.

That said, there are five books I can say I couldn't live without in practice. I don't even have to think about them. They are the most beat up, most written in, most bookmarked volumes on my shelf, and I think they are indispensable in any chiropractic office. In no particular order:

[wp_caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="240" caption="Anatomy - Clemente"][/wp_caption]

A Regional Atlas of the Human Body by Clemente - there is no shortage of wonderful anatomy books on the market, but Clemente is one of the "classics." So is Netter's book, and of course, the British version of Gray's Anatomy (it was a book before it was a TV show). I learn something new or gain some insight every time I open this book. Your adjusting will be better when you understand what you're doing in an anatomical sense, your muscle work will be better, your understanding of biomechanics and, therefore, what is wrong with your patients will improve leaps and bounds when you regularly use an atlas of anatomy.

[wp_caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="195" caption="Orthopedic Physical Assessment - Magee"][/wp_caption]

Orthopedic Physical Assessment by Magee - just like anatomy books, there are a dozen great orthopedic textbooks on the market. I own Evans' orthopedic textbook, too. I use them both all the time, but if I could only have one, this would be it. Nicely written and laid out, great illustrations, well organized, good photos... just an all around gem of a book and I use it on an almost daily basis to either reference something, refresh something I already have learned, or to show something to a patient or student.

[wp_caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="239" caption="Radiology - Marchiori"][/wp_caption]

Clinical Imaging with Skeletal, Chest and Abdomen Pattern Differentials by Marchiori - Dr. Dennis Marchiori was one of my radiology professors when I was in school at Palmer. Over and above being a great guy, this is an unbelievably great book. Excellent visuals, very practical, and the pattern differential organization makes finding what you think you see on the x-ray easy in the book. A lot of people are partial to Yochum and Rowe's radiology texts, which are also great, but again, I think every DC and student needs this on their shelf. I use my first edition every single day.

[wp_caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="260" caption="Merck Manual"][/wp_caption]

The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy - this small, thick book is indispensable in a chiropractic office. Every disease, syndrome and zebra (as well as the common stuff!) is in here, summarized very clearly and succinctly so you can know what you need to know about a health condition in a minute or two. This is a great source of information and I don't know what I would have done in private practice without it.

[wp_caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="185" caption="ChiroCode Desk Book"][/wp_caption]

ChiroCode Deskbook - Last, but certainly not least, is this gem of a book. The included CD will calculate all the Medicare fees and local regional modifiers so you can generate a ballpark reasonable fee for each service. It tells you the ins and outs of billing Work Comp, auto/PI, Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance. It takes the mystery out of Evaluation and Management coding. It has all the procedure and diagnosis codes you will ever use and describes them in plain language so you are selecting the correct code. It helps you document better and allows you to avoid common pitfalls in billing and coding. This book is worth ten times its weight in gold, honestly. I used it more than any book in my practice and it should be a required text in any chiropractic business class. You cannot practice without this book, in my opinion!

Google has open-sourced its protocol buffers, the company’s lingua franca for encoding various

Google has open-sourced its protocol buffers, the company's lingua franca for encoding various types of data, in order to set the stage for a wave of new releases, according to official company blog posts and documents.

"Practically everyone inside Google" uses protocol buffers, states a FAQ page. "We have many other projects we would like to release as open source that use protocol buffers, so to do this, we needed to release protocol buffers first."

Google uses "thousands of different data formats to represent networked messages between servers, index records in repositories, geospatial datasets, and more," wrote Kenton Varda, a member of Google's software engineering team, in a blog post. "Most of these formats are structured, not flat. This raises an important question: How do we encode it all?"

The ubiquitous XML (extensible markup language) is not efficient enough for Google's data-sharing needs, according to Varda: "When all of your machines and network links are running at capacity, XML is an extremely expensive proposition."

With protocol buffers, "you define how you want your data to be structured once, then you can use special generated source code to easily write and read your structured data to and from a variety of data streams and using a variety of languages," according to a documentation page. "You can even update your data structure without breaking deployed programs that are compiled against the 'old' format."

Protocol buffers are three to 10 times smaller and 20 to 100 times faster than XML, according to Google.

But XML has some advantages for certain tasks, according to the documentation: "Protocol buffers would not be a good way to model a text-based document with markup (e.g. HTML), since you cannot easily interleave structure with text. In addition, XML is human-readable and human-editable; protocol buffers, at least in their native format, are not."

Google has prepared a download page that contains protocol buffer compilers for Java, C++ and Python
