A few days ago, I read a post from Lee Ann about "good diabetics" and "bad diabetics." It was frustrating to read that there are people who think there is some kind of civil war going on in the diabetes community. It made me reflect on an earlier post I wrote about noncompliant diabetics. It's something I still believe, that there are people who are noncompliant, but reading Lee Ann's story and the stories from other people who are struggling with diabetes made me realize that we often focus on the surface of our life with diabetes and not on the deeper, emotional triggers that causes us to do what we do.

There are those that are considered "good" diabetics - those who test frequently, count carbs perfectly and have an excellent A1C. Then there are "bad" diabetics - who don't test, never carb count and have an A1C in the double digits. While there are diabetics who are like that, I don't think having these glossy, stereotypical categories are really fair.

Today, I found out that my A1C has gone up a full point. In February, my A1C was 7.2. Now, it's 8.1. On the surface, it looks like I'm a "bad" diabetic. It's gone up. My logbook is littered with blood sugars in the stratosphere. But is that the full story? Clearly not. Life the past few months have been very stressful. I've traveled to eight states, spent hundreds of dollars fixing my car, dealt with structural changes at work and moved to a new apartment by myself. My life has been messy and I'm not the only one who deals with this.

This happens. Life happens.

When you look at the surface of someone who is struggling with diabetes, someone with a higher A1C, an empty logbook or penchant for SWAG boluses, perhaps we should look beyond the traditional excuses.

We are complex human beings and diabetes is a complex chronic illness, so to think that we can wrap why someone is a "bad" diabetic and put a pretty bow on it is, quite frankly, ridiculous. I know there are some people who are noncompliant because they are simply irresponsible and lazy. But I also know there are reasons that are wholly separate from this disease that range from eating disorders to clinical depression to life situations that make stabilizing diabetes incredibly difficult.

When I found out my A1C was over eight percent, the highest it's been since I was a sophomore in college, I wasn't surprised but I was also crushed. I knew I could do better because I had. But my endocrinologist - my lovely, lovely endocrinologist - wasn't discourage. She asked me what had been going on, and I told her about my travel and my move. She understood that it was a stressful time and that now things were starting to stabilize. We talked through my trouble spots, zeroing in one my morning spikes and my correction crashes. Just talking about what was going on and knowing that there was someone who was going to walk through this with me was a weight off my shoulders.

Life is complex. It changes and with it, so do your blood sugars and your basal rates and your bolus ratios. Having a chaotic life and a chaotic disease can be overwhelming, which is why I think it's so important to have a place that centers me, that refocuses my scattered energy and frustrations. It's why I spend so much time on advocacy and mentoring. I'm able to channel the parts of diabetes that I don't like into something that I do like. When I hear that people struggling with disease are afraid to talk about what they're going through it really makes me sad and disappointed.

Being a "bad" diabetic - whatever that might mean - does not mean you are a bad person.

Diabetes management is not black or white, but varying degrees of gray. It's not a game where you have to pick sides. The behind the scenes of our lives are only open as we make them. If you are struggling with something, say something. We should never be afraid to talk about our struggles. And if someone says something to you, listen. They are opening up their soul, their struggles and their fears. Nothing any of us say should ever, ever be disregarded.

Behind the scenes, we really are all the same and we all deserve respect and compassion.

Things are pretty much the same as my last blog post. Work. Sleep. Repeat. I now have two other co workers that are going to leave with me. We're either:
A. Going to put in our two weeks at the same time
or
B. All walk out at the same time
We haven't decided yet. We all have to find jobs first. I've decided that I'm going to try to wait for something that's going to start me out at at least 10 a hour. So I can afford to move out. Finally. I've already picked out an apartment complex that allows pets. I've been going out on my lunch breaks and giving out resumes (copied on the work copier >) to anyone who'll take them. In my work shirt. I'm pretty shameless. On all the apps I've filled out I've put 'verbally abusive supervisor' as my reason for leaving. I'm holding out for the position at AT&T (hello iPhone!) or the secretarial position at the USDA.

Other than that all I've been doing is going to Daniel's, Brandi's and watching The OC in excess. Yeah, I know. But Seth Cohen makes the show worth it, I'm telling you. Also, I made a deal with my cousin that I would watch the first season of The OC if she'd watch the first season of Heroes.

Speaking of, season two is on DVD the 26th!!! And season 3 premiers on September 22, just in time for my birthday (the 25th). I picked up the new issue of Star Wars Insider today. It's dedicated to Clone Wars. I'm not sure how I feel about Clone Wars just yet. I'll end up checking it out. Stay tuned for a review.

I'm here, in a land which feels so distant from home, both physically and emotionally. Strangely though, the distance is a little unnerving, as it gives time to consider matters closer to home without actually being in the thick of it, to consider how one feels about things which are brought to the fore when they are not there, easily available. This all boils down to people, a few people, but still people who I miss, even after just 3 days. But, I know the break is doing me good on the whole, and was in dire needs.

Anyhow, I'm not here to moan all the time (though it may seem that way), I'm lucky enough to have great friends who invite me to their house in Mallorca with their parents. Only been here 1 day, having arrived last night, but it's simply amazing. The weather right now, at 10pm is 27deg Celsius......yum. A day of sun preceded this, with an outing on the yacht to another cove around the coast, snorkeling in the shallows, and then chilling at the house, with an evening swim in the pool to cool off. I have to say, I could very easily get into this life, and already I can tell that returning to work will be a challenge after such a fantastic break. At least the banter is all good, with one of the first things my friend said to me when we arrived and found we were sharing a room for the night (in separate beds i might add) was "If I wake up with something in my...You're dead...!". Hmm, ok, I guess that's an insight into his traumatic mind.

The setting is amazing, I feel like I've been dropped into an episode of The O.C. Big grand houses surround the house, which itself is beautiful. Imagine the Cohen's house from The O.C. , downsize it by 50%, and there you have it! A pool surrounded on two sides by the house, with white columns at one end. It's hard to every see how I may ever be able to find myself owning such a magnificent house. I know envy is a terrible thing, but if we weren't envious, surely we would have nothing to dream of!

Further updates of the trip will follow in due course. I hope that those of you who read this blog are well, and wish that you too are as relaxed as I am right now, such a change to the norm.

I think she is the NEXT big thing in music. There are some other pretty cool videos on Kira's iTunes channel, this one came up yesterday

I'm at 85 words on my essay right now. I need 800, by the way. Woo-hoo!

The finale isn't available anywhere right now, but I already spoiled myself. How the frig did Twitch beat out Katee for second place? That's just stupid crazy insane. (Yes, I just put random unrelated adjectives next to each other.) The dude must have some rabid fans. I'm so glad Joshua won and not him. Again, Twitch is overrateddddd.

I've been listening to the Music from The OC mixes. I miss The OC. I miss Seth and Summer!

My internet is being retarded. Urgh.

Time to get back to the pretty much blank word document.

A shift in the tides

I've been regurgitating everything I've eaten in this past week since yesterday. Oh dear god it hurts. It seems to have stopped now which is a relief. Popcorn at the movies is so delicious and a key factor in any movie experience, but damn, love hurts.

I haven't been bothered to update much seeing as my Macbook is temporarily not with me.

Consequently, I've been watching a lot of episodes of The OC. I totally forgot how good it is!

Ich bin ja seit einer Woche wieder auf Diät und habe dank meiner tollen Krankheit letztes Wochenende bereits wieder 5 Kilogramm abgenommen. Echt toll. Aber viel mehr gibt es da momentan nicht zu erzählen (Bzw, wird dann schon mal mehr kommen).

Heute will ich aber über eine meiner Passionen, das Schauen von TV-Serien erzählen. Zu meinen absoluten Favoriten zählt da Dr. House und ich muss gestehen, ich habe es nicht mehr ausgehalten ohne neuen Stoff. Ich habe mir diese Woche die 4te Staffel in Englisch angeschaut (trotz der quäkigen Stimme des guten Gregory). Ich werde jetzt aus Rücksicht auf Mitlesende, welche noch auf die deutschen Folgen warten müssen nicht in die Details gehen. Aber es arbeitet eine neue Ärztin im Krankenhaus, eine echte Schönheit!

Nach 12 Folgen war ich dann doch genötigt mehr über diese Schauspielerin in Erfahrung zu bringen. Und siehe da, ich hatte wohl Tomaten auf den Augen. Denn ich hatte die Dame bereits einmal gesehen, allerdings als blonde Barkeeperin in OC California!

Und wie ich schon immer zu meiner kleinen Schwester zu sagen pflege, war diese Frau die beste Rolle in OC California, und dies über 4 Staffeln.
