I believe these are the essentials today. I'll call it TILT (acronym for things I've learned today). I think that everyone creative should make something like this, no matter how small these things are. I felt that #1 is important. There are times when I randomly tell people who I'm not close to my problems. I realized that it's one of the worst things that you can do for many obvious reasons. I don't think I should still elaborate on it.

Netflix: I got my Netflix subscription back!!! The first movie is suppose to ship Friday (or by Friday...), so I'll probably have it Monday...I'm so excited! Listen, my queue has 194 movies in it and, because I'm a broke college student (i.e. can't afford the $50 plan to get eight [yeah, that's right: EIGHT] movies at a time), I'm on the one DVD/unlimited a month plan. But I'm so excited. The first movie in my queue is Big Bang Love, Juvenile A.

Money!: My financial aid came in, so I'm no longer a complete bum! I really have basically no money, though, still, 'cause I've got some ridiculous bills to pay...it'll be better next month, and really better next semester (no more credit card bills!), but I will make do until then...I'm debating whether or not to get cable right now! It would be so nice to have , but then, I've gone all summer without it...

My Moleskine: I'm using part of it as a ledger for my money...because my mom really wants me to keep track of it offline and, well, it's just a good idea...anyway, I know how much money I have wherever I am lol The lists I keep in it I think are invaluable, too (groceries I buy PLUS their prices...I know how I spend before I even leave the apartment).

My new Macbook: So pretty...my only complaint - and it's hardly a complaint - is that the F5 and F6 keys are blank because there's no backlit keyboard :\ And I also think the dedicated media keys on F7 through F9 are a little pointless...I mean, I know the keyboard shortcuts :\ But, but, but, but the screen is not cracked so I can't complain too much :) And it's so much cleaner 'cause I already knew what software I wanted and didn't have to try out tons and tons and tons...now I'm only debating if I want to install Windows in a separate partition (to watch Netflix movies online lol) :\

The Black Parade: by My Chemical Romance...is such a good album :) I thoroughly enjoy it. My friend randomly put it in in her car while we were driving and it totally made my evening.

VLC: I began using it as my default video player and it is still amazing me...I barely used it on my old Mac, but it's exclusive on this one :)

Now, I am typically a vinegar/baking soda user to get tough stains out! Recently, I don't have time to spray, wait, scrub, dry w/cloth, and vacuum. I do love my vinegar and it works wonders. I am skeptical of products that claim they can get a stain out simply by spraying and walking away! I have used resolve before so I am not new to the product itself. However, it has been a few years since I purchased from their line of products. I decided to give the Resolve High Traffic Foam a try for my carpet. Oh you can do the "old routine" of spraying and scrubbing with resolve BUT I LIKE THE IDEA OF SPRAYING AND WALKING AWAY!!!(or as they call it on the can choice number 2..."self-cleaning"). IT WORKS!!! It really works. This product will thrill the lazy "time saving" soul ;0)!!! Oh I almost forgot, you do vacuum after it has been on the carpet for 15 minutes!! Still it is easier than "cinderella style."

Doing Evil things to my friend's children
I encouraged Joey to draw all over his face and his mum's face in textas that we later found out are not washable. Good times. This photo was taken before the glitter glue mohawk. And I wonder why people never want me to babysit..

RealEstate.com
It is so fun to look up houses on here - brings out the voyeur in me. Except I don't know anything about what suburb is where in Victoria, so all the nice ones I've found are way too far away from where I'm actually meant to be looking. So...

Google Maps
Is the bomb for discovering where suburbs are in relation to the CBD. No more trying to send the boy out to live in the sticks. I was a bit pissy at Googlemaps for ages because they didn't show my house some love when the cameras went around for the street view - you can see the tip of my driveway from another street and that's it. Now I am all about the love again though - I can look at potential rentals, get a feel for the neighbourhood (like if there are burnt out cars or shanty towns on the block next door) and generally stickybeak.

Dark Angel
Jessica Alba + Michael Weatherly = Heaven. Plus, when I get up to it, Jensen Ackles stars in like 19 episodes. Lust overload! I am greatly jealous of Jessica's stomach though.. Even with only clothes that fit me in my wardrobe I still feel like a heifer some days.

Sorting out my Wardrobe
It's so much easier to get dressed when I only have stuff that is going to actually fit me to flick through. No more getting out the shower to discover I can't wear that top because the bra that goes under it I spill out of.

Dreaming about Post-Apocalyptic Worlds
Maybe I read too much fantasy, but if the industrial world ended, would you be able to survive? The essay that is due this week is based on two conflicting sociological theories, but both say industrialism is here to stay, while capitalism is transitory. I disagree. Sooner or later there is going to be a nuclear accident/comet/electrical pulse (I have been watching too much Dark Angel), and it's going to wipe out most of technology, all of the monetary systems and a good proportion of the transit system. And I can't wait! I am thinking about going on one of those survival weekends where you learn how to make fire without firelighters and catch rabbits with string. It always helps to be prepared. How would you go if you woke up tomorrow and there was no electricity ever again?

So what is floating your boat this week? And what TV show should I obsess over next, seeing as no one seems to be handing out jobs on platters to pregnant women these days?

So, I decided to participate in THINGS I LOVE THURSDAY! Over at the Diaper Diaries

Anyway, I love a good book but because I am a mom I have little time. I need something easy to read and something I can put down and pick up without having to worry about where I was or what I was reading last. It has to be entertaining on some level and yet informative. This book does it all for me. I have enjoyed this book so far! It is under 200 pages! Even with a hectic schedule anyone can read this in less than a week and that is being generous! Enjoy!!!!

Medicare
It was free to take Kaidin to the doctors this morning, which is good because I spent all my money on ante-natal appointments this Wednesday. The poor child might have to have a lesion on the inside of his lip cut off and biopsied, which I am a little nervous about. Everything will be fine, but I hate the idea of him having to have needles and stuff in his mouth.

My bed
I've used this before, but it's true. When I'm feeling sick, like I am today, there is nothing better than curling up in my bed and resting. It's funny how much I look forward to going to bed each night.

Sociology
I did a heap of homework last night because I have to do an essay over the weekend and I am re-discovering the fact that I love sociology. Anthropology and History will always be my first loves, but I am enjoying this naughty fling with soc, learning about myself by learning about the social pressures put on me. Look out for posts on assigning meaning to symbols (especially within the fashion industry) and the conform/delinquent aspects of post-modern societies in the West. I love topics where I can sound all nerdy. Maybe I should go buy some glasses.

Babies
I visited a friend with a newborn today and have decided that babies are the cutest things ever! Isabella is tiny tiny tiny and has very dark hair. Her mum is so together already, it's very inspiring for me - I hope I look that great only 2 weeks after I give birth. Frankly, I hope I can stay awake as long as she does 2 weeks after I give birth! Tina and I went to school together and made our (older) boyfriends buy us cheap booze on weekends - it's really interesting to see now how far we have come, with our pigeon pair sets of children and our nice cars. We is all growned up!

Fingerless Gloves
I'd be freezing without them. I have very cool black ones with a skull-n-crossbones motif on the back. Endless thanks to the boy for letting me steal them. Actually, he'd get more thanks if he stopped going to bed before I called him, but what are you going to do?? My hands are warm, all is forgiven.

Quick Mentions
My Mary Kay sales lady for being oh so patient and letting me play with all the new makeup, BJ for babysitting while I attempted to go and see my lawyer (who canceled the appointment about 5 minutes before I got there), Palmers Cocoa Butter stretch mark massage cream, Pumpkin Patch girls clothes (especially on sale), sunlight, cheap vegetables at Spud Shed, the fact that my hot water system is cranked up to the max, cameo brooches, being alive, my car being all fixed (and my Dad paying for it - thanks Dad!) and that there is only a week to go until Spring.

What are you loving today??

Tulips
My mum bought me these because I told her the sob story of finding gorgeous orange tulips for $4 in Melbourne, but having to leave them with the boy. They are so pretty and they are potted so once these flowers wilt I can plant them in my garden.

Google Reader
I know I'm a late convert, but I'm really enjoying being able to get up in the morning and check what is new with all my favourite blogs without having to hunt for them! It saves a lot of time and it's os much easier to comment and keep track of everyone.

Kaidin
He comes out with some absolute gems. I told him the baby was a girl and he asked if we can call her Astro Girl. I asked him when he's going to learn to pick up his towels and hang them and he said Maybe in College. He's so a mini version of me!

Hunting for nice pretty, sexy maternity bras
I'm determined to find some today, to buy next month. I've already grown out of the new bra I bought two weeks ago - it's getting ridiculous.

New Purple Pen
It's a uniball and the ink is so smooth and such a pretty colour. Now I just have to find some paper to write love letters on. I've been scribbling in my moleskin with it (and the new blue pen I got), going crazy over lists and more lists.

Sunshine
It's freezing in Mandurah today - 8 degrees Celsius. The sun is coming out slowly and I'm looking forward to going for a long walk in the sunshine to defrost and wake up a little.

Having a girl
Don't be disappointed if I refuse to tell you what names I pick. I told a friend in the UK my two favourites and she facebooked back "Not that or that. You only have weird names." I didn't realise Rachael was so alternative. I do have a huge list of names that between me and the boys will need to be whittled down (or I could give her 6 middle names...) but to avoid my heartbreak I'm just going to keep mute.
I keep finding tiny baby girl clothes that are just adorable. In going with my own fashion sense (or lack thereof) I am also looking for gothic baby clothes - I found this awesome site once and then promptly forgot the address, but it had little sleepers with skulls and things on them and was totally adorable. If anyone has any idea what I'm talking about, please tell me!!
I am getting used to the near-constant kicking now. It's a nice reminder that she is there. I actually forgot I was pregnant this morning until I lent over in the pantry and felt her kick in protest. I think I'm the only person who can be over half way to her due date and forget that she's pregnant. I blame the hormones.

What are you loving this glorious thursday??

Veidi naljakas värk tegelikult, sest enesekontrolli olen just enda trumbiks pidanud.

Jepiii!

Spending time with the boy - Being held and told that I am loved.. It doesn’t get much better than that. Except when he puts his hand on my stomach and the baby moves for him. It hasn’t moved for anyone else. I didn’t want to come home.

Networking - It’s amazing what you can get when you talk to people and are not afraid to ask questions and put ideas forward. I am happy to report that by the end of my conference a lot of people knew my name and I had about a trillion job offers, so now I can move over east whenever I want without worrying about what I’ll do for a crust over there. Now if I can just find a house..

My Mummy - Every now and again she surprises me by actually being helpful. Plus her girlfriend is a really really good cook.

Free books - They didn’t end up costing nothing as I had to pay $90 to get on the plane with 10kg of extra luggage and then left a good stack at the boy’s place in Melbourne, but I ended up with a huge haul. I think I have about 22 books over here and another 12 over there and a handful of DVD’s and CD’s. I love publishers who give me freebies. Bonus points to Justin from Random House for giving me the Magician book I was lusting after and a copy of Midnight’s Children - you are a star - and to whoever from Hachette gave me a copy of Graceling which I devoured before I even got to Melbourne.

The Baby - Even though most of the time it hurts like hell and when it doesn’t I’m extremely uncomfortable, being pregnant is kind of cool. I have heaps of energy and people tell me I have that glow. I find out next Wednesday if it’s a boy or a girl (cross your fingers for a girl).

PS: Congrats to Gala on a whole year of TiLT!

The object of the game is to help the little Dizzy Bee rescue his fruit friends by using your iPhone or iPod touch and tilting and turning it. The graphics are pretty good and the gameplay is fun but challenging. I downloaded a few days ago, and I just synced it to my iPhone and I played it for the first time today and I couldn't put it down. It's just too entertaining. Yup. You should check out the trailer on YouTube, and if you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, go download it for free! :D

This is a real image full of life-size objects. Pretty sweet eh? The effect is called tilt-shift photography and is achieved using very expensive lenses and such but as you can see the effect can be achieved in Photoshop as well.

I went to another Mariners game yesterday and it was awesome. We sat in the front row, field level, right behind first base. Pretty BA, if I may.

Jack White's other band, The Raconteurs, have released a second album which, in my opinion, is far better than their first effort. This song specifically is so great I decided that you needed to hear it. Other good songs on the album include: Consolers of the Lonely, Salute Your Solution, Many Shades of Black, and pretty much all the others on the CD. I suggest you pick this one up!

Hummm... what to be grateful for this week?

Bug Exterminators! More on this in another post I promise but for now lets just say that when you leave the apartment screaming at 3am because a cockroach woke you up by crawling on you, you become thankful for the man with the big spray can! And also Mike for not losing his cool when I did!

Arts Jobs email list. Because I've had an idea for my first art project in many a month and posted a call for participants on the aforementioned mailing list. And I now have 12 or so interviewees letting me know their fascinating stories about water.

Baked beans and mash makes a second entry in my list as it's still feeding us while we have no cash.

Mike's pay day is today so I'm very excited as he's promised me a big bar of chocolate! And a date tomorrow night, yeah!

My latest read-it-from-cover-to-cover-in-two days book... 'Unhooked: How young women pursue sex, delay love and lose at both' made me feel like I'm not alone or insane. Though not a huge pursuer of sex, I certainly fall into the delaying love category, always thinking of things with a higher priority - art, career, travelling, being alone, studying - and this totally non-judgemental book gave me a structure based on lots of women's experiences and observations to think about my social, sexual and achieving life without falling into a blind panic about the impossibility of it all. Still processing it, but I want to be cherished and to learn how to relate better.

I think that's it for now!

Lists: I realized I love making lists. I think it comes from me being really, like, organized in an OCD/compulsive sort of way, so organizing similar items into relevant, physical things (i.e. lists) really relaxes me. Looking at budgets is comforting lol

The Air I Breathe: Like I said in an earlier post: this film totally blew me away. I loved every frame of it and was totally impressed with Brendan Faser's performance! He has a sex scene!!! SHHH!!!

Nice neighbors: So I'll admit: we were using an open wireless connection that one of our neighbors had...but it has disappeared (they moved out..?). So my housemate and I were, of course, dying and she went to one of our neighbors who had a locked wireless network and asked for their password, which they gladly offered us. So, don't be afraid to ask people for their locked network's password! They're probably nicer people than you expect :P

Lykke Li: I found a remix of her song I'm Good, I'm Gone a long time ago and downloaded her album in the middle of July, and I absolutely love her. I watched her music videos today and totally fell in love with those, too...she's just a great artist...and, of course, Swedish. Seriously, they make the best music.

Coming home to brownies: Sooooo nice to walk into an apartment that smells like chocolate :) Makes my day and then I eat the brownies and feel even better!

The night sky past 12:00a.m.: I love the night sky when the moon is at it's full height. The night is utterly gorgeous out...I'm sure part of this is due to lights from homes, cities, etc., but it's absolutely gorgeous and I get lost in it whenever I'm outside.

Noodles & Co.: I cannot get over how amazing their macaroni and cheese is...it's godly. I've seriously had one other dish in all the times I've eaten there and...I just don't think I'll ever get tired of it. If you haven't tried it, do it!

4GB flash drives for $8.00: Thank you, Amazon.com. Thank you.

iWork: I actually really like Apple's office suite...why did I ever let myself be misled by NeoOffice..?

The Weather Man: I forgot how good this film is, but I watched it again recently and fell in love with it all over again. It's a really great movie that had a pretty quiet release.

I'm writing this post at1:06a.m. and there's a really creepy red room across the way from my apartment...it's weird as hell.

My last 3 days of work have been out in the field. We’re in the midst of a levelling campaign

My last 3 days of work have been out in the field. We're in the midst of a levelling campaign here at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. It is by far the most expensive data collection that is undertaken here in terms of sheer man-hours, and it's not easy to execute. We've gone out in crews of 4 or 5 for the last week to take measurements on different "level lines," (pre-measured routes) around Kilauea. After the data has been collected it is compared to last year's data to detect any changes in the surface of the volcano. It's known as dry-tilt, or single-setup levelling. SSL is the more correct name for what we've been doing.

The most exciting part of the whole process for me has been the location. I finally had the opportunity to go into the sections of Kilauea's caldera that have been closed to the public since the March explosion events. Here's the plume from nearly underneath of it.

Who thought that poisonous gas could look so beautiful? Due to the lethally high concentrations of sulfur dioxide in the plume's immediate vicinity, we have to wear something special to do any field work nearby.

Now THAT is a fashion statement. I tried in vain to stop myself from saying, "Luke, I am your father!" repeatedly. The gas masks filter enough noxious fumes to allow us to work in SO2 concentrations up to 10 times the levels considered safe for breathing. The parking area behind me has been closed since the March explosions. It is coated with a fine layer of explosive materials now. That's the HVO Deformation Group truck in the background.

Here is my levelling crew from today. We were right next to Halema`uma`u's open vent, which is the origin of the plume. It was incredible.

Here's one more shot of the amazing gas mask getup for good measure. We have to wear the helmets in case another explosive event occurs. The first notable one since April happened last Friday, so the safety precautions are certainly necessary.

Ashley and I aren't phased by the volcano behind us, however. We're still sending that Aloha spirit your way!
