My dearest child or computer as others might call it has been unavailable for the last 5 days and I'm overjoyed to have it back. Dad needed the power pack for something I had no clue of (or MAYBE it was conspiracy against me...) So naturally computer said kaputz and went into a coma. But now that it's up and running I can finally get the holiday/random pictures here.

Et pour cause ! Pourtant, l'outil informatique est devenu au fil des années un élément indispensable de la panoplie du joueur d'échecs. D'abord, le compétiteur moderne dispose d'une base de données de plusieurs millions de parties, jouées par des milliers de personnes de tous les niveaux, qu'il peut exploiter à sa guise grâce à un logiciel spécifique. Elle lui permet de se préparer contre ses futurs adversaires, de peaufiner son répertoire d'ouverture ou encore de rejouer religieusement des parties classiques de grand-maîtres.

Ensuite, il a également besoin d'un moteur d'analyse, c'est-à-dire d'un logiciel capable de générer d'assez bons coups dans une position donnée. Comme ces logiciels sont en général très forts (disons-le clairement, les meilleurs d'entre eux peuvent battre n'importe quel humain dans une partie en temps limité), le pousseur de bois aguerri s'en sert souvent pour étudier ses propres parties et y repérer les fautes tactiques les plus grossières.

Enfin le joueur d'échecs, même occasionnel, aime jouer en ligne contre des adversaires du monde entier. Pour enchaîner les « blitz » (parties où chaque joueur dispose d'un temps de réflexion très réduit, en général inférieur à cinq minutes pour l'ensemble de l'exercice), il a besoin d'un client qui lui permette de se connecter à son serveur préféré.

Cependant, il y a un gros hic. L'entreprise qui détient le quasi-monopole de l'équipement informatique pour le joueur d'échecs s'appelle Chessbase. Et évidemment, elle ne développe ses outils que pour la plateforme Microsoft Windows (et entre nous, cela fait un moment que Chessbase est entré en mode tiroir caisse)...

Peu importe. De toute façon, le nouvel adorateur de GNU et Linux va s'évertuer à chercher des alternatives libres, quitte à perdre un peu en confort et en fonctionnalités. N'ai-je pas raison ?

Par conséquent, je voudrais ici faciliter la tâche des joueurs d'échecs souhaitant se séparer définitivement de l'OS de Redmond, en leur fournissant quelques pistes vers des solutions intéressantes. J'espère pouvoir dégrossir un peu le terrain.

1 - Gérer sa base de données avec Scid.

Scid est une application pour gérer des bases de données, créée par Shane Hudson. Elle dispose de toutes les fonctions que l'on attend d'un tel outil. Scid peut servir de simple lecteur PGN (Portable Game Notation, le format standard des parties d'échecs), dispose de fonctions de maintenance puissantes (on peut par exemple purger automatiquement les doublons d'une base) et, bien sûr, sait générer des rapports d'ouverture ou fournir des statistiques variées à partir de quelques parties. Son interface, bien qu'un peu austère, est propre et efficace.

Il faut noter que le développement de Scid s'est brusquement arrêté en 2004, lors de la mort de son créateur. Mais comme Scid est un logiciel libre, il a pu être repris par des volontaires motivés ! Ainsi, la dernière version stable de l'application date du 22 juin dernier, et de nombreuses nouvelles fonctions sont venues progressivement enrichir un outil qui était déjà d'excellente facture.

Une vieille version de Scid est disponible dans les dépôts Debian. Vous pouvez, si vous le voulez, compiler la dernière version depuis les sources.

Enfin, j'attire votre attention sur la disponibilité d'une base gratuite de plusieurs millions de parties sur Internet : Icofy. Complète et régulièrement mise à jour, elle constitue un assez bon choix par défaut.

2 - Un très fort moteur d'analyse : Toga.

Toga II est certainement le plus fort moteur d'analyse libre. C'est un module UCI (Universal Chess Interface, protocole ouvert de communication entre moteur et interface). Il est basé sur le moteur Fruit 2.1, lui aussi sous license GPL. Ce dernier a connu son heure de gloire il y a environ deux ans, quand il parvenait à rivaliser avec les meilleurs programmes commerciaux de l'époque ; on lui reconnaissait un style de jeu assez humain, ce qui a fait une partie de son succès. Toga conserve certaines de ses qualités.

Vous pouvez utiliser Toga dans Scid. Mais comme ce dernier ne gère pas nativement le protocole UCI, en tout cas pas dans la version présente dans les dépôts, il nous faudra installer un paquet supplémentaire : polyglot. Ce programme permet de rendre Scid compatible avec les modules UCI. J'ai toujours trouvé la procédure un peu obscure, c'est pourquoi je vais la détailler ici.

D'abord, téléchargez les paquets toga et polyglot avec votre gestionnaire de paquets préféré.

Nous allons maintenant créer un fichier toga.ini, qui sera ensuite pris en argument par polyglot. Créez par exemple le fichier suivant, puis placez le dans le répertoire qui contient toga et polyglot ; chez moi c'est /usr/games (pour plus de précisions, les spécifications du protocole UCI sont disponibles ici) :

Ouvrez Scid. Cliquez sur Outils, puis Moteur d'analyse. Une fenêtre s'ouvre, avec les moteurs déjà installés. Nous voulons installer un nouveau moteur. Par conséquent, nous allons cliquer sur Nouvelle.

Une nouvelle fenêtre apparaît, avec plusieurs champs à remplir. Devant Nom, écrivez par exemple Toga. Devant Commande, il va falloir indiquer l'emplacement de polyglot : c'est /usr/games/polyglot. Devant Paramètres, inscrivez toga.ini. Devant Répertoire, il faut indiquer le répertoire dans lequel se trouvent toga et polyglot, c'est-à-dire : /usr/games. Vous pouvez sans incidence laisser les derniers champs vides. Cliquez sur OK : Toga est désormais disponible pour vos analyses !

3 - Jouer sur Internet avec Eboard.

Cette partie peut intéresser les joueurs occasionnels. Le jeu sur Internet, bien qu'il puisse difficilement remplacer le jeu en club, possède un charme tout particulier. Il existe plusieurs serveurs : les plus connus sont Playchess (qui appartient à Chessbase, payant), ICC (Internet Chess Club, le plus populaire et le plus fréquenté par les grands maîtres, payant) et enfin FICS (Free Internet Chess Club, gratuit : « We do it for the game, not the money »).

Vous pouvez d'ores et déjà enterrer le premier choix, puisque l'unique client permettant d'accéder à Playchess n'est pas compatible avec GNU/Linux. En revanche il existe plusieurs applications libres permettant d'accéder à FICS. Eboard, même s'il est bien loin d'être parfait, constitue un compromis honnête entre convivialité et efficacité. En tout cas, il conviendra bien aux débutants, et possède l'avantage non négligeable d'être présent dans les dépôts de Debian.

Un autre programme libre fournit la possibilité de jouer sur ICC ou FICS : il s'agit de Jin. Pas vraiment meilleur que Eboard, il assure également l'essentiel.

4 - Une ultime expérience à but scientifique et castratrice de libertés : les solutions propriétaires existantes.

Plutôt que de jeter un voile pudique sur la scène, faisons discrètement le tour des solutions privatrices disponibles. À ma connaissance, il n'y a que l'honnête Shredder 11 qui puisse être utilisé nativement. Ainsi, notre promenade semble tourner court.

Et pourtant, nous disposons d'un outil « merveilleux » en l'objet de Wine. Et si les logiciels de Chessbase (encore eux) échouent pour la plupart lamentablement (cliquer sur les menus de mon Fritz 9 faisait invariablement planter l'application), il est un programme qui, lui, fonctionne impeccablement. C'est le déjà légendaire module d'analyse de Vasik Rajlich... Rybka ! Le meilleur des moteurs est donc parfaitement fonctionnel sur notre OS. Pour l'utiliser avec Scid il suffit d'adapter le fichier .ini précédent en écrivant notamment en face de EngineCommand quelque chose comme wine /usr/games/rybka.exe.

Notons également que le tout récent Aquarium (interface graphique créée pour Rybka par Convekta) fonctionne aussi bien avec Wine, et est donc exploitable sur GNU/Linux. De même, le bon client Babaschess peut être utilisé pour jouer en ligne. Je ne l'ai pas testé personnellement, mais il semble que les retours sont assez positifs.

Ainsi, la situation du jeu d'échecs sur GNU/Linux est finalement loin d'être catastrophique, contrairement à ce que l'on aurait pu penser au premier abord. Malgré les faiblesses évidentes de certaines des solutions proposées, nous pouvons être satisfaits car l'essentiel est préservé : le tryptique Scid/Toga/Eboard présente un réel interêt pour n'importe quel joueur d'échecs (mention spéciale pour Scid, véritable couteau suisse à l'efficacité remarquable). Courage, vous ne devriez pas voir la courbe de progression de votre classement Elo s'infléchir !

Here are our toga's

I only had one drink at the party---a blueberry vodka with Sierra Mist Free.  I also munched on some pita chips.

On the way home we stopped at 7-11 because Justin wanted a gatorade.  How pleased I was when I found out that was free slurpee day (because it was July 11th).

It was a little kiddie size cup.  Perfect size for me!!! I got a cherry flavor because the crystal light flavor was broken (:( ).  I also had a sweet tooth weakness and got Swedish Fish.  I only had 2 though. 

And went to bed.  6AM came WAY too early.  We got to work immediately moving furniture out and such.  People started showing up at a quarter til 7.

Breakfast

I made myself an iced coffee to wake me up.  It was just GFI sugar-free french vanilla mixed with water and ice.

and made a cereal mixture of about 2T swiss museli, some regular oats, kashi go lean, 5 frosted mini wheats and some dried fruit.  I had a small spoonful of natural peanut butter on the side and about 1/4 cup of light soy milk mixed in.  I also had a piece of 100% whole wheat toast with apple butter on it.  I unfortunately looked at the ingredients of the apple butter and it had HFCS.  UGH!  I am going to aim to find some natural AB and chuck this crap.

(it isn't burnt, it just looks that way because of the AB)

We did pretty well.  I left around 10:30 and rode my bike up to the farmer's market.  I wandered around forever just looking at all the yummy goodness that has started to come in.  I am thrilled that peaches are in now!!  and corn!!

By the end of the yard sale, we made enough money to make it worth getting up early.  Still had quite a bit of stuff that we took to Planet Aid.  After that, I had to run to a meeting but I didn't have time to really eat.  So I just grabbed food to take with me.

Lunch

I had half a clif bar (chocolate chip) and a plum.

Then yesterday evening, I was going to see Brad Paisley (with Jewel) along with 2 of my girlfriends.  Before I left the house I knew I hadn't eaten much during the day, so I threw together a snack.  I had 1/2 cup of cottage cheese with 1/2 a banana and some (farmer's market) cantaloupe.  I put a little apple butter on top because Justin always says he likes AB with cottage cheese.  I am not sold on this combination.

I also had 2 100% whole grain sesame crackers with hummus spread on one and 1/2T of peanut butter on the other.

and out the door I went.  We had an amazing time at Brad Paisley.  I had 2 beers (the remaining Ultra's from Friday night) before we went in.  I snacked on some Honey Wheat pretzel braids and rice crisp while tailgating.  Right after walking in, these guys that work for Brad Paisley came up to us and said that they are given front row tickets to give to girl's every night.  So we ended up being right front row.  It made me feel like a groupie (especially seeing I didn't know a single song) but it was a lot of fun being that close.  I LOVED being that close for Jewel.  I was amazed how fit/muscular she was.  She wasn't in anyway a teeny Hollywood girl.  You could tell she lifts some weights, which I enjoyed.  I had 2 drinks while at the concert--another beer and a margarita.   Alice and I split a soft pretzel.

I didn't eat a whole lot on Saturday.  Just kind of snack throughout the day with out any real 'meal' except for breakfast.  Probably wasn't the best idea and I have felt off all day today (sunday) because of it.

Setelah beberapa kali melakukan rapat intern unit dan subunit KKN untuk memantapkan program yang akan kami jalani selama KKN, akhirnya kami melakukan sosialisasi dengan warga setempat. Kebetulan subunit Jetisan yang pertama mengadakan pertemuan dengan warga yang diwakili pemuka-nya untuk mensosialisasikan program KKN. Alhamdulillah sebagian yang diundang datang, paling tidak ada respons baik dari warga terhadap ‘pendatang baru’.

Aku ditodong jadi MC untuk acara kali ini, alasannya : agar acara berlangsung dalam bahasa Indonesia, karena biasanya acara-acara dikampung menggunakan bahasa kromo inggil, jawa halus banget. Acara pertama yaitu pembukaan, dibuka dengan kalimat basmallah dengan harapan acara berjalan dengan lancar. Kemudian dilanjutkan dengan perkenalan baik peserta KKN dan beberapa pemuka masyarakat.

Masuk pada acara inti yaitu sosialisasi program KKN. Tema utama kami adalah Pemberdayaan Toga (Tanaman Obat Keluarga) dan Pengelolaan Sampah Terpadu yang kegiatannya dijabarkan sebagai berikut :

Pelatihan komputer; Bimbingan belajar mata pelajaran, TPA, dan kesenian; Melengkapi perpustakaan SD

Pengoloaan sampah :

Kegiatan 17 Agustus

Setelah program dijabarkan acara selanjutnya adalah diskusi. Banyak saran dan informasi dari warga yang sangat berguna untuk pelaksanaan program kami nanti. Misalnya informasi jadwal kegiatan rutin warga mulai dari PKK, Pemuda Desa, Remaja Mesjid, dan rapat-rapat RT. Ini penting, agar kegiatan kami bisa berjalan beriringan dengan warga, masuk dan berbaur dengan mereka untuk mempermudah penerimaan, pelaksanaan, dan keberhasilan program. Harapan besarnya ada interaksi “saling menguntungkan” antara kami dan warga disini.

Setelah ucapan terimakasih telah hadir dan masukan2 dari warga maka acara pun ditutup dengan ucapan hamdallah. Semoga kehadiran kami disini dapat memberikan manfaat baik untuk kami maupun untuk warga. Amin. Wassalamualaikumwarohmatullohiwabarokatuh...

A época de formaturas está chegando e como não poderia deixar de ser, as encomendas de bonecos caricaturados com becas estão na moda. Além de ser um ótimo presente para o formando, serve como uma lembrança e decoração para a vida toda. I'm not a man prone to hyperbole, but you are quite literally America's greatest hero, nay, doused in godliness.  Because of your wrestling matches with park benches, nobody even seems to notice a harmless eccentric like yours truly these days.  It seems that after an estimable tenure, I've passed the torch on to another challenger of the status quo.  Oh, sure, you can't take the twisted decadence out of me—I'm the same soulless void I always was. But a new generation is ready to follow in my footsteps, helming the ship en route to an oblivion of the cruelly absurd and absurd cruelty.

Saturday, May 17 eph / aey staged a public intervention in New York's Union Square. This act of collective imagination attempted to create a tear in the space-time continuum to transport performers and passers-by alike backward in time and eastward in space approximately 2500 years and 5000 miles.

Passers-by were encouraged to don togas, provided by eph /aey productions, and / or to engage in a dialogue with the performers. The toga walk was followed by a symbolic Greek sacrifice. Participants gathered in a circle and chanted a passage from Homer's poem The Iliad in ancient Greek; this was followed by a recitation by eph / aey of a poem comprised exclusively of textual documents collected around Union Square

Union Square Agora is concurrently a singular act in the history of the use of Union Square as a public space, and a deliberate act of decenetring / recentering of that history. Furthermore Union Square Agora is alive in the conscious and subconsious memories of those who witnessed and in the displaced memories of those who heard and read about it after the fact. It grows out of the discourse it creates.

Archaeologists believe it was sculpted while he was still alive, perhaps two years before his assassination. Since it is clearly not an idealized portrait but a study from life, the bust shows what Caesar really looked like.

It has forced many to re-consider their hero.
“He doesn't look like the kind of guy who would let himself get assassinated or worry about adjusting his garments in death,” said one scholar. “This Caesar image has close set eyes and a pugilistic face, possibly affected by the bust's damaged nose. Not the smooth intellectual face of someone who was famous for using clemency toward his defeated enemies as a political tool.”

Yet others see the portrait as a fine illustration (nature's) of the general who conquered Gaul, created a Civil War, and became Dictator. He was no romantic. Clemency was a political tool and there were times when he opted for others (a club). Read Suetonius and see how brutal he could be.

All the extant portraits but one were known to have been carved after Caesar's death and were therefore artists' inventions.

A favorite one has always been this noble head in the Vatican Museum.

An engraving of its profile was used as a frontispiece for James Anthony Froude's famous Victorian biography. He admires Caesar no end and denies or justifies and forgives all the evil deeds Suetonius and others record. In his last chapter Froude even compares him to Jesus Christ. Froude saw all his hero's almost supernatural virtues reflected in this Vatican Museum portrait.

The one bust that was known to have been carved in Caesar's lifetime has usually been ignored. It is so realistic it seems crude. It shows too definite a man and one who does not seem to embody all those mythical qualities of the hero, at least the likeable ones. Its profile is slightly more satisfying.

This is a coin minted during Caesar's brief period as dictator. In common with nearly all the other portraits, it shows his long, thin neck with deep parallel furrows, perhaps scars of some kind. The large eyes must be only an artistic device.

What is the function of public space in the 21st century? In what ways have our understanding and use of public space evolved over the past two or three millennia? In what ways have they remained constant?

We would like to invite you to join us in celebrating the release of the May / June neighborhood-themed issue of The New York Moon Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 3.00 pm in Union Square by participating in a collective effort to imagine what Union Square might be like as an ancient Greek agora.

1. We begin our collective imagining very simply: by convincing as many people as possible to participate in a toga walk--that is, to put on togas (a white sheet will do) and walk through the stalls of the market in Union Square.

2. Following the toga walk we will be conducting two other performances that concern themselves with the way we make use of our public space in the 21st century and encourage audience participation.

3. Finally, in the spirit of the agora as a place built on the principles of public discourse and the exchange of ideas, we invite anybody who is interested to contribute to the discussion of public urban spaces in absolutely anyway that inspires them--be it a reading, a performance, an installation, etc.

How to Participate

1. Togas togas togas! We need as many people in togas as possible. Come out in a toga! Get your friends to come out in togas. In addition, we need lots of extra togas (sheets) to hand out to passers-by. We are hoping to collect dozens of extra togas that will be distributed and recollected at each end of the market. Bring your old linens or let us know of a place that is giving away old linens that we could collect before the 17th.

We will also need several volunteers to help in the distribution and collection of togas.

2. Performances. In addition to a toga-clad audience, we are looking for a dozen or so volunteers / actors to participate in the performances.

3. Come in a toga - do your own thing. Exploit an interested, toga-clad audience.

Toga dan Stola ini dikemudian hari berkembang menjadi sandangan para bijak dan pendeta yang dimodifikasi menjadi lebih rapi dan dinamakan Vestimentum.

Vestimentum atau Toga bagi para bijak dan pendeta dipakai untuk membedakan mereka dari orang-orang awam, namun juga dipakai pada perhelatan ceremonial yang agung. Maka sejak saat itulah Toga dipakai untuk upacara-upacara dan penobatan.

Bila sekarang para lulusan di seluruh dunia mengenakan Toga pada hari wisudanya, itu disimbolkan, bahwa para wisudawan sudah bertambah ilmunya dan dengan bertambahnya ilmu maka bertambah bijaksanalah mereka seperti para bijak dan pendeta terdahulu yang akan selalu menjaga perdamaian. (BN)***
