Oh my my, oh hell yes. That's a good way to sum up the amazing Tom Petty show I just saw this past weekend! Now, this is my second time visiting the beautiful Gorge in George, WA to see the elusive man himself play his heart out. And it was just as impressive as the first!

Thanks to my dear friend Mike, I got a ticket and an in with his group going to the show. We had an amazing time at the cabin one of the guy's provided to us, enjoyed the keg someone brought up and sang to high heaven in the pitch black of the Gorge. AND! Steve Winwood was the opener...uhh, only the BEST opener to Petty ever! (Ok that's debatable)

Final thought: Go see him if you can, the man is getting old and he may not be around for much longer touring!

I love Tom Petty so, so, sooo much. Words fail me. Nothing homoerotic or anything, NTTAWWT. He's just such a freaking great songwriter and performer and every song he's ever recorded is the best ever, that's all. We need a new national holiday, Tom Petty Day. And every city ought to have one Tom Petty-only radio station.

I just had to get that off my chest.

In the spirit of getting in shape for school, three of my friends and I had our own marathon this weekend.

It involved approximately 16 hours of marathoning here:

And a shorter, but still productive marathon here:

My legs had a workout from all the walking, my feet had a workout trying on shoes, and there are a lot of shoes at MOA, my stomach had a workout from all the delicious food, my credit card had a workout making purchases, and my face had a workout from laughing all weekend.

I learned new things this weekend too! I discovered that I could purchase a cute outfit at an expensive department store for under $10, that I look beautiful in platform heels, and that there is such a thing as too much chocolate.

So thanks girls for putting up with my driving, singing, and whining. Thanks for letting me sleep in the big bed, and getting me in shape for school.

As a reward, I promise not to sing this song again anytime soon:

Okay, I suppose I shouldn't sing this one again either:

I wasn’t able to goto the recent Tom Petty Show. I heard that after he played the SB his shows sold out in less than a half-hour. The man is a genius. A classic American Voice, great songs that young and old know, and a great showman taboot! In the past year he has brought out an exceptional album by his original band, Mudcrutch. If you haven’t picked it up, you should. It has a 70’s southern rock feel to it. And it has an amazing back-story. The band started in 1970 with Petty being the front man and his good pal, Tom Leadon on Guitar. The band started out in Gainesville Florida. (Home of the writer of this blog’s most hated college. I am sure if there was one thing I would not like about Petty is the fact that I am sure he is a Gators fan.) The band made several lineup changes and finally brought out a single in 1975 which didn’t chart. The band then broke up until 2007 when Petty decided to get the band back together.

Can you imagine? You have been living your life all these years. Over thirty to be exact. You have watched your friend make it big, win awards, date whoever he wants, live the dream, and one day he decides, hey why don’t we finish what we started? You get a call just randomly. Here is how I think the call went.

Petty: “Hey Leadon, it’s Tom.”

The Album is great. He took some of their older songs, mixed in some new stuff they wrote, and wala, a great album.

Man if this wasn’t a kick in the ass…..
So I’m minding my own business wasting aw

Man if this wasn't a kick in the ass.....

So I'm minding my own business wasting away my life on the internet like most unemployed people do. When I figured it was time to visit the ole iTunes to see what I've been missing out on in life.

Come to find out, not much really.

However, I do like to peruse the Celebrity Playlists every so often to see who I'm compatible with. For the most part I'm not compatible with anyone. It's funny to me to see all these tv/movie stars select music that no one's heard of, and just pick it to be like "oooh look at me, I'm so original, I'm earth friendly too, so here is a reflection of my musical tastes that you've never heard of."

That's how I know actor/actresses are full of shit. I know you're were al listening to the Backstreet Boys back then. I know you're probably in love with the Katie Perry song I Kissed a Girl now. Admit it. No one thinks less of you. Join the masses, I mean shit, we buy your movies, tv shows, etc etc, throw us a bone.

Come to think of it, I was compatible with one "celebrity." Maria Sharapova. Ooooh how we could have spent many a nights staying up late, talking Russian, taking pictures with your Canon Powershot, trying on our new clothes from the Nike employee store, all the while listening to our shared perfect playlist. *sigh*

Alas, more than likely none of that was going to come to fruition.

However, I got an an unexpected compatibility score when I came across none other than Danny Tanner's Celebrity Playlist. I'm not going to lie, 90% of this list is awesome. I love/like a great deal most of the songs on this playlist.

That doesn't mean that me and Bob Saget are going to be hanging out anytime soon. That is unless I get to come over while he visits his next door neighbors. (That my friends was a reference to Entourage. Make sure to check out that episode cause that one was hilarious. And the neighbors were hot.)

Here is Bob Saget's playlist. (With my comments added.)

Creep Radiohead

I've always loved this song. I'm pretty sure my brother got me hooked on this back when I was a little Alterna-Teen. This was a pretty sweet little anthem and the guitar riff was pretty bad ass. Pretty sure I may have air guitared once or twice to this little ditty.

Better Man	Pearl Jam

I'm not sure why, but this has always stood out in my head as one of my favorite Pearl Jam songs. I think it came from the Live in Atlanta 3 CD set that I used to have. I used to plug in headphones and lay there and listen to this album. Thank god it was grunge back then, cause I couldn't handle myself being emo.

Gimme Shelter	The Rolling Stones

I love this song too. For one it's on Rock Band, and we all know how much I love Rock Band. Two, its a pretty sweet Rolling Stones song. Three, if I'm not mistaken it's the song used to open The Departed. Scorcese and The Rolling Stones go together like Peanut Butter and Jelly. Look up on IMDB.com how many times he's used their songs. It's a lot. I've always want to see a Stones concert, just to say I'd been.

Wake Me Up When September Ends	Green Day

Meh, not my favorite Green Day song. American Idiot was good and all, but probably my all time favorite album from Green Day was Kerplunk. Look that one up.

All Apologies (Live)	Nirvana

I loved this performance. Loved it. I've always wanted a huge flat-screen tv and surround sound so I could play music DVD's while just lounging around my house. Well, I don't have my own house, or flat-screen, or even this DVD. If i did, I can almost guarantee this would be on. A lot.

Should I Stay or Should I Go The Clash

Classic.

The Heart of the Matter	Don Henley

I used to program this song for the radio station I worked for. Good times Mr. Don Henley.

(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding Elvis Costello & The Attractions

Can't say I'd really ever heard this before. Lot of people have Elvis Costello on their list. Maybe I should check him out.

4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)	Bruce Springsteen

I didn't say I love everything Bob does.

Sullivan Street	Counting Crows	August and Everything After

RPG, my roommate from college, LOVES the Counting Crows. Needless to say, this isn't one of my favorite songs and I've heard it MANY times. I also saw Adam Duritz one early morning at McCarran International Airport in Vegas. Considering he was looking very much like me on a flight home, I decided probably wasn't the most opportune time to be asking for a photo. RPG is going to be pissed.

Say	John Mayer	Say

I literally hate this song.

Free Fallin'	Tom Petty

Never been a BIG fan of Tom Petty, but I've always enjoyed this one. I think it goes way back to when I used to skateboard. (before breaking my arm.) And I'd see this video on MTV. He had all sorts of skateboarders on there. And I tried looking it up, but couldn't find anything, I remember a long time ago, some story about one of the models in the shoot being killed by her bf or something. I dunno. Cool story. Cool Video. Cool song.

Gold Digger (feat. Jamie Foxx) Kanye West

Oh how I love Kanye West. Like a lot. He's probably one of my all time favorite musicians. Plus this song is wicked fun, and unfortunately entirely true. Of course I'll never know that, because I generally don't find too many Gold Diggin women whilst unemployed. (I am now also going to make a more conscious effort to use "whilst.")

Pork and Beans	Weezer

Weezer is one of my all time favorite bands. Although we've had a bit of a break up in recent years with their other albums. Pinkerton was one of the last glorious albums they did. Rivers Cuomo brought back a little of the Old School Weezer magic with his solo effort, but something was still missing. Man I love Weezer.

Fake Plastic Trees Radiohead

I forgot how much I loved this song. And upon further review I didn't have it in my iTunes. Thanks Bob Saget!

All These Things That I've Done	The Killers

The Killers, are probably my second all time favorite band. (U2 is up there too, I just have a hard time making decisions.) And this, is probably my favorite song they've done. Which is cool because Nike has just used it in an AMAZING commercial. I've stated this before, but if you ever get the chance to check out The Killers, shell out the money and do it! It's well worth it.

Intergalactic Beastie Boys

This song reminds me of my freshman year in college. All the sluts were shaking thier ass to this song. Thank god for the Beastie Boys.

The Comeback	Shout Out Louds

I had never heard this. Still not sure I like it.

Hit So Hard Hole

It shocks me ever day that Courtney Love is still alive.

The Lady Is a Tramp	Frank Sinatra

Who doesn't love a little Frank Sinatra. I think it's cool he was linked to the mob. Like really cool. Cause the mob is cool. I've got stories about a current singer who sounds much like Sinatra that has alleged ties. Its kinda cool.

God Gave Me Everything Mick Jagger

meh.

Baba O'Riley	The Who

This is what Bob had to say about this song... and i quote "I used to run the mile to this song, wanting to be like Roger Daltry who ran in place to it. One of the best rock bands I've ever seen in concert. And I've seen the best. Hell, I worked with 'Jesse and the Rippers.'

California	Phantom Planet

Is it sick that I love this song? Please tell me no, because I do. I really, really do. I'm not sure what it is. The hook, the guitar, the piano.... ahh that's right, it's none of those. It's Seth, Ryan, Summer and Marissa. Although I hate Marissa. If Marissa and the song Say were in a fight to the Death, I'm not sure which one i would pick. Either one could go. Good thing I dont' listen to the radio too much and Marissa is dead. ahhhh all is right with the world.

California Love	2Pac

I find it hilarious that this song is a.) not only a fav of mine. but b.) a song that reminds Bob Saget of going to the clubs. I know I'm a white kid from the Pacific Northwest, but I do love my rap. I do love it.

My Funny Valentine	Chet Baker

I bummed that Bob ended his playlist on a song that, well, I've never heard of. We were going so good there for a bit Bob. Damn.

So there you have it folks. Me and Bob. Soulmates in music.

That last statement will haunt my dreams.

ps, for those that really care, the Roast of Bob Saget will be on Comedy Central on August 17th. Check it out for countless hilarious jokes about Bob and the Olsen Twins.

I usually have this musical instrument always stored away neat and tidy in it’s case

I usually have this musical instrument always stored away neat and tidy in it's case when I have no use for it. But lately I HAVE had use for it.

Playing my bass is fun now that I have given up on the dream of being a rock n roll god. I bought it when I was 13 with money I saved up from being a paperBOY!!! (Remember those?)

I have a Fender Squire and a Peavey amplifier that I have been rockin' out on consistently for over a year now. I had them packed away for the longest time. Many years.

I have a pretty well insulated basement that allows me to crank up the stereo with my iPod and I blare my amp and just jam! Nobody upstairs can really hear me, which is how I like it. They don't get annoyed and I can just be left alone (with 20,000 imaginary fans screaming for me to take off my shirt and spit and sweat on).

I know alot of Led Zepplin from my early years of playing because I always thought they were easy to figure out. But now I have recently added Marilyn Manson, Radiohead, Tom Petty, Judas Priest and The Cult, just to name a few, to my resume'.

Before anyone comes filling up my inbox, I do not have any desire to play in your band. That dream is dead. I just do it now to enjoy myself and brag to my friends and in my posts that I can play songs that are heard on the radio.

Now if you excuse me, I must go now go so I can suck back a fifth of Jose Cuervo, smash up my hotel room, do a line of cocaine, have sex with a groupie, and pass out on the bathroom floor while covered in my own vomit.

Actually I'm off to bed. I have errands to run first thing in the morning then help my wife do housework and then spend the rest of the day with her and my kids.

After a nite of partying, I always know if it was fun-filled when I wake up in my bed, with absolutely no clothing on next to my shoes that I wore the nite before (well I have my Roberto Cavalli’s men underwear on). I usually roll out of bed by doing a front flip off the bottom and landing in a perfect 10 dismount. Head spinning and seeing stars, I stumble to turn on my IPOD, and play a little Tom Petty “Free Falling” and then brush out the dead cat that crawled into my mouth over the course of my sleep.

After freshening up and doing a little dance to some classic rock, I look out my window to see what kinda day it is going to be. THANK GOD, I am on the 3rd floor otherwise, the neighbors would get a peak of my lil “chicken nuggets”. I throw a wife beater on and head down stairs to get some water and make some coffee. If it is a nice day, I sit outside, have my coffee, and try to piece my evening of shenanigans together. (I am still trying to piece this past weekend’s and no luck!)

Looking back on the perpetual high that I have been on, I am sadden by the fact that my endless summer has come to a halt and now I have to go back to reality, but not before one last ADVENTURE. So I am off to London and Paris to drink every last drop of FUN and when I return my life will be “OH SO BORING” because I will turn back into a responsible adult which means no more drunken banter with my friends and no more after hours and no more mornings waking up next to my shoes…

If I grace you with my presence this weekend, then I ask you to buy us a shot of PATRON to say Adieu - Au Revoir. Until we meet again...

Artist: John Mellencamp

You will be interested in this album if you are a fan of: Rock, Blues, Old School Country, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Early Roots Music, Electric Folk

Worth buying? Yes, the whole album!

Tell me more: Sometimes, when an artist stops being concerned with releasing a hit, it becomes the time when they create some of their greatest music. For years I have only known John Mellencamp by his hits. I have never really bought or listened to any of his any of his albums. So that opening statement may not be a fair one, but as I listened to this album, I couldn't help but feel that he doesn't care one bit anymore if he ever has a hit song again or not. John Mellencamp's latest CD is an astonishingly powerful music al statement about.......Well, life, death, love, and freedom. The title pretty much sums up what the album is about. There is a haunting sparseness to the sound of this album that just echos in your head long after you've listened to it. Like I said in the beginning, I knew his hits, but I wasn't really a fan....But with this album I have become one.

What about the packaging: The CD comes in a digipak with a nice lyrics booklet that is easy to read. What is really unique is that it also comes with a DVD version of the album that boasts a quality that is nearly indistinguishable from the master tapes. This DVD version can be played on your computer or DVD player and is a real plus for you audiophiles

Listen to the album and buy in mp3 format here

Posting those two music videos the other day got me thinking about my favorite music videos. Yes, I was old enough to have been around before MTV even existed, and I watched a lot of that station before it turned into Cribs and TRL 24-7. (Has any other TV station seen such a quality meltdown? I guess that's a different post.)

Anyway, over the next three days, I will be posting my Top 15 music videos in reverse order. Here are my picks for Nos. 15 to 10:

15. "Legs", ZZ Top. No video of the 1990s made geeks feel like they could get the hot chicks better than this one. I was a huge ZZ Top fan when I was younger -- in retrospect, I'm not sure why -- and this song was a favorite. But the video, it was a geek's wet dream.

14. "Birdhouse in Your Soul", They Might Be Giants. One of the best "weird" bands ever, and one of my favorite of their videos. Disembodied heads singing? Check. Face-offs in tall-back chairs? Check. Goofy song? Check. It's all here, and it's all fun.

13. "Whip It", Devo. This video blew me away when I was younger. Yes, it's another "weird" band, but Devo were geniuses, and this video is a masterpiece of the bizarre. Favorite part: when he whips the woman's clothes off, leaving her with her cigarette. Wacky, and hilarious.

12. "Human Behavior", Bjork. Yes, another "weird" one. But where else could you see a Bjork fly or a giant teddy bear stalk and attack a hunter? Nowhere but in Bjork's and video director Michael Gondry's (who later directed one of my favorite films, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) wacky minds. And the drums kick ass.

11. "Don't Come Around Here No More", Tom Petty. I was a huge Tom Petty fan when I was younger -- and unlike ZZ Top, I still this Tom Petty is great -- and this video was my favorite of his. I remember seeing it for the first time and being blown away by Tom Petty as The Mad Hatter. Perfect casting. I also loved the part where the tea party guests cut and serve Alice as cake while her fingers flutter. Genius.

10. "Blue Orchid", The White Stripes. One of my favorite bands, and one f'ed up video. Jack White twirls a cane while wearing some period costume. Meg White keeps the beat by banging on (and breaking) dishes. Some weird woman in a white dress and uncomfortable-looking footwear tries not to break her ankles walking around a decrepit house before snakes crawl all over her and a white horse rears up. Wait, what?

Come back tomorrow for the next five. Feel free to try to guess my choices in the comments. Better yet, share some of your favorites below.

So I know another blog about my adventures in hiking will make me sound like some sort of crazy, outdoorsy, enthusiastic hiker (and maybe I am). But I thought, what better way to wrap up my summer than to blog about one of my favorite aspects of Los Angeles, the hikes.

Last week, I hiked in Griffith park while striding to the beat of John Mayer's new live CD entitled "Where the Light is." His cover of Tom Petty's "Free falling" is not only soothing and makes me want to literally change my life for the better, but the lyrics are chock-full of L.A. references. After listening to this song on repeat so I could pick out all of the references, I let my ipod shuffle as I neared the top of the mountain.

With a 360 degree panorama view of the city, I gazed from the top of the mountain as my ipod began to play John's song "In your Atmosphere." I laughed to myself as I listened to the first line of his lyrics, "I don't think I'm gonna go to L.A. anymore." Irony? I think so...

I breathed deeply as I took in the awe-inspiring view and thought to myself, "Yep, I'm going to be coming back here."

Here's a video of Mr. Mayer playing his cover of "Free Falling" Let it wash over you. You'll thank me.

So, when I sent out my notification that I'd started a blog, I got a lot of replies asking me about the email that had spawned my blogging. It seems I didn't send it to everyone as I thought, so I promised to post the story that started the blog.....Condiment Girl and The Pot Pit. Enjoy!

Saturday July 12th, 2008 5:50pm

As I'm screaming down the highway heading to Meredith's house, I'm wondering how entertaining this Tom Petty concert will be tonight. I mean, the man has some good tunes, but can you really dance to them? Will he have an entertaining light show? What will he sound like? What will the crowd be like? After I scream into her driveway, causing her to dive out of the path of my car, we head over to Walnut Creek Amphitheatre. Hanging out in traffic is fun. At least that's what we told ourselves while we were sitting there. As we were waiting, a limo pulls up to the right of us and the window rolls down. Tom Petty you say?? No.....a group of buzzed, buxom blondes who are flashing said breasts our the window at........someone. We still have no idea who they were flashing. Lesson #1 from the Tom Petty concert......Duran Duran does not corner the market on crazy fans. So we park, walk into the venue, grab some food/beer, and find a place to sit on the lawn. Sitting around us are mostly people our age, a man with a prosthetic leg, a man with electric blue polish on his toes, and a man with "A Nightmare Before Christmas" tattooed down his arm. As Steve Winwood is playing the last half of his set, some of the concertgoers around us begin to dance and jump around, occasionally spilling their beer. Lesson #2 from the Tom Petty concert.....undergarments are not optional when wearing a short sundress and dancing around in a drunken manner. Meredith and I, because this is an amphitheatre, wonder aloud how long it will be before we smell pot wafting though the air. Two songs later.....ohhhhh. Tom Petty takes the stage soon, and about 15 minutes into the show, we realize that we are the only ones in our area who didn't bring a little herb for the show. No lie, it was 360 degrees around us. The only one not smoking.....our Tim Burton-loving, tatt man. Lesson #3 from the Tom Petty concert, not all heavily tattoed men partake. Four minutes later, we're enjoying the music, but the group behind us is enjoying it more. So much so, that one woman stumbles into me and drops into a pile onto our blanket in front of me. After unsuccessfully trying to get her to stand, her boyfriend asks if it's ok for her to rest for a few minutes on our blanket until she's ok to stand. We state that it's ok, but that, as Mere said "in the interest of full disclosure," we should let him know that she's sitting on honey mustard containers. His reply "are they open?" "Uh....yes...she has honey mustard on her ass." He laughs.....we promptly nickname her Condiment Girl. As Condiment Girl swayed and jerked herself awake, her friends dance around her. We are offered a few joints which were so tiny that they couldn't be held between your finger to pass to someone else. They had to sit in the palm of your hand. We decline. Being in the Pot Pit, we really didn't need to partake. A few songs later, we look over and see a girl bent over completely. Worried that she's getting sick, we check on her to find out she's making a call on her cell phone. I'm not sure how this helps the call making process, but she repeats this throughout the night, causing numerous people to inquire about her health. LOL! Eventually, a girl next to Meredith begins to dance in this funky, arm waving, Woodstock inspired way. Meredith names her Interpretive Dance girl. Occasionally IDG would dance with her date, who looked like he was more of a My Chemical Romance fan than a Tom Petty fan. Ironic moment of the night, being able to smell clean air during the song "You Don't Know How It Feels." (hint....chorus = "let's get to the point, let's roll another joint") As the show progressed, Condiment Girl was miraculously still sitting up. This was mostly due to a firend who sat with her through one song and helped her prop her knee and elbow to hold her swaying head. Eventually she fell forward and was lying face down between her legs, folded in half. Her friends, boyfriend included, began jumping around more and more to the music, narrowly missing her head on many occasions. Lesson #4 from the Tom Petty concert.....pick your concert friends wisely. A true friend will take care of you, even if you were stupid enough to get yourself shitfaced. During the first song of the encore, Condiment Girl sat up, then fell over on her side, landing face first on Meredith's shoes. None of her friends notice this. As the last song of the night begins, I feel beer rain on me. To my left, a guy has just punched his beer can, is yelling at someone next to him and hitting himself in the head. I don't see this as having a good outcome. I turn to Meredith and say we have a fight coming. As we begin to straddle Condiment Girl, her friends are too busy dancing to know what is going on, the crowd parts and arms are swinging. Eventually her friends encircle her with us, as the boyfriend works as the bouncer, bouncing the fighters away from us. Every time he pushes the group away, he feels the need to tell me how annoyed he is that this is happening during his favorite song. Her friend keeps saying "This is a TOM PETTY concert....I mean......TOM PETTY" I'm sorry.....is Petty immune to having stupid fans??? After Fight Boy has been dragged off in a headlock by his friends, and security belatedly shows up, the show ends with the boyfriend repeatedly saying "You know what it is? It's 'roids man.....that dude's a 'roider!!" At this point, a friend of Condiment Girl tries to wake her and asks if anyone has checked her pulse. No worries.....she eventually gets up, but 40 minutes after she has fallen face first into Meredith's shoes, someone asks if she's got a pulse? Nice. As we stroll off amid the many thank yous, we discuss our lessons from the evening. Before we leave the grass, we hear our quote of the night. A woman loudly tells her date "I smell like a dog's balls!"

But luckily for me I can read all about the exploits of nearly 40,000 drunk, semi-naked, boisterous Canadians running around in the muck listening to the likes of Jay-Z, Coldplay, and Tom Petty.

Check Out I Was At The Pemberton Music Festival to get a taste of the experience; minus the intense traffic, huge dust storms, and abundance of loser guys trying to score with drunk girls.
