VANCOUVER, July 30 (CNW) - A new study released last week reveals clean energy from waste material

VANCOUVER, July 30 (CNW) - A new study released last week reveals clean energy from waste material is closer to becoming a commercial reality in British Columbia. The study was made public at the opening of British Columbia Innovation Council Day at the Pacific NorthWest Economic Region (PNWER) Annual Summit in Vancouver, B.C.

"British Columbia’s bio-economy is growing and this study acknowledges the great energy potential that resides in the Fraser Valley," said Technology, Trade and Economic Development Minister Ida Chong. "The British Columbia Innovation Council has taken a leadership role in furthering the Province’s Climate Action Plan and positioning British Columbia as a champion of innovation and clean technologies."

The study led by the British Columbia Innovation Council (BCIC) further investigates the commercial viability of refining biogas from organic waste materials into biomethane - a renewable natural gas that can be sold in existing gas markets. A successful practice in Europe and the United States, biomethane production provides an opportunity for B.C. to develop and market a renewable energy alternative to natural gas at a price that competes with fossil fuels.

"Taking advantage of growing biofuel and bioenergy opportunities is a key focus of B.C.’s Agriculture Plan and Bioenergy Plan," said Agriculture and Lands Minister Stan Hagen. "The findings from this study are significant to the many agricultural producers in our province who can put their waste resources to use - benefiting the environment, the economy and all British Columbians."

This study uncovers great potential in B.C. to use organic waste resources to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and further British Columbia’s clean technology sector and low-carbon economy. Findings from an earlier study released in November 2007 revealed organic waste material found in the Fraser Valley could produce an estimated 120 million cubic meters of biomethane per year, an amount equivalent to the diesel consumed by 80,000 cars or 100 million litres.

Other BCIC projects underway include a study exploring the cultivation of microalgae to produce most of B.C.’s diesel needs (with findings to be released later this year). BCIC has also assembled two advisory groups composed of members from industry, government, and academia to develop programs that address the need for commercially viable energy alternatives.

Last night, at roughly half five, I had this great idea. What if...I only ate one meal a day, with no snacks or anything?

Well...in practice it'd never work since I always wake up hungry. So, by my current rotation, I'll have lunch at 2 and tea at 6. Only two meals of the day 4 hours between each other with the latter having to last until at least 3am?.. Nah. Three meals a day? There's an idea...although do you class a cuppa soup and some toast as a meal? I don't really...

As you can see, the diet I've been musing is inpractical. I've had two meals today and my stomach feels awful..it feels like it's eating itself. I'd go and get a snack...but I'm not eating chocolate or crisps again for a while. So I'll have to wait for about 3 hours till I can get toast and a pot noodle or something...

Jesus, are diets like this?.. Why the fuck would I be bothered doing that - literally starving myself to suit the image that society demands I have? I'll do it my way, thanks.

Trash is something that, in most industrialized countries at least, is somewhat hidden and ignored.

Trash is something that, in most industrialized countries at least, is somewhat hidden and ignored. We collect trash over the week and place it at the curb or in a large dumpster. Then it magically disappears. Well, it doesn't magically disappear, but I'm guessing many people don't think about it too much. Despite the fact that not everyone has access to curbside trash pickup, mass trash management has become an expected convenience for most. We expect the trash to go away and be handled properly for long-term disposal.

While mass trash collection and management has become standard fare in many societies, garbage control in the home can quickly become an issue if trash is not handled properly. Trash piles up when it isn't immediately placed in the proper receptacles, and some people insist on hanging on to things that are actually trash.

Let's make proper home trash management a regular habit with the following tips:

Place trash cans in every room. Every room in the home, including bathrooms but excluding most closets, should contain a trash can. When there's no common place to put trash, it piles up on the floor or any other horizontal surface. Give people a place to put trash, and they'll use it (probably).

Use properly-sized trash cans. Not every room needs a large, 30-gallon trash can. Most rooms will require only a small to medium sized trash can. In fact, using trash cans that are too large might lead to bad odors as the trash piles up. Smaller cans encourage regularly taking the trash outside to a large, central garbage receptacle.

Place trash into trash cans immediately. Don't toss that crumpled paper or tissue onto the floor! Don't set it on the counter to deal with later! Always place trash into the can or recycle bin immediately when you are done with it. Your home will look nicer and cleanup will be easier when there's not trash mixed in with everything else.

Use can liners or wash cans periodically. Trash is messy, and trash cans do get dirty from time to time. Either use trash can liners or cans that water and gunk won't soak through, and don't forget to wash out the unlined cans periodically. Even liners allow some stuff through at times.

Recognize what is and isn't trash. Some potential trash can actually be reused in ways that will save money. On the other hand, some things that people tend to hold on to are actually trash and should be disposed of immediately. For example, newspapers and most magazines are not worth keeping long-term. They should be recycled if possible, or at least disposed of after they have been read.

Recycle as much trash as possible. A large percentage of common household trash can be recycled. Most paper, including magazines, newspapers, and junk mail can be recycled. Many plastics, metals, and cardboards can also be recycled. Consider purchasing one or more recycling bins to complement the trash cans.

Use the curbside (or other) trash pickup regularly. If curbside trash pickup (or a similar service for those living in apartments, condos, etc.) is available, use it every time it is offered. For example, trash in our neighborhood is collected twice per week, and we make sure to pick up all trash and set it at the curb twice per week. Skipping even a couple times of trash collection can quickly lead to trash overload. Keep things clean by doing it regularly.

Get everyone to participate. Everyone needs to take care of their own trash. Children should be taught to clean up after themselves and place trash into the cans. Adults need to be reminded periodically that they have to do their part as well. Everyone is responsible for generating trash, and therefore they should each have to clean up that trash.

Don't donate trash. When something is obviously worn out or essentially worthless, don't donate it. Recycle it or throw it away, but don't make it someone else's problem.

When trash is handled properly, it allows everyone to focus on other, more important things. Simply placing trash in the cans immediately can make a big difference between a messy room and a clean one. I'm guessing that most people already follow many of the trash tips listed above, but I feel that we all need a little reminder from time to time. Here's to hoping that we can all lead less trashy lifestyles!

Although we don't throw away a great deal of biodegradable waste in our office, we're still conscious that we should be throwing away almost none! According to the WRAP website, the average household's waste is made up of 41% biodegradable waste (a combination of kitchen waste/garden waste and soil).

Here at 'Sprout' the majority of our organic waste is teabags, coffee grounds, the odd banana skin or apple peel, paper towels and leaves from the garden. We decided to get a compost bin and start composting this waste rather than throwing it into our green bin to end up incinerated or in landfill.

Plastic compost bins are very cheap the the moment from sites such as http://www.recyclenow.com/compost/ but building your own out of recycled materials can cost you almost nothing if you are the kind of person who is handy with woodwork. I'm not the best at handywork but luckily I have a friend who is and he built us this fine compost bin entirely out of recycled materials! Many thanks to Aran from V3!

As an activist, sustainability educator, and random person sometimes I find it difficult not to try

As an activist, sustainability educator, and random person sometimes I find it difficult not to try and mesh all three of these elements into the way that I communicate thoughts about life. Recent discussions around dumpster diving and educating the “masses” about the legalities of such acts has raised alarm bells for me. Let me start by defining these actions..

Dumpster Diving: The act of going into commercial dumpsters (or non-commercial to) and pull out items of use or food that is being waste for reuse or consumption.

Gleaning: The act of going into farmers fields (note: still legal in Europe although not as heavily acted upon as the old days) and taking the produce left on the farm fields after the harvest.

In the true form Gleaning is an act that is still legal in Europe as a means of collecting left over food. The concept of Dumpster Diving has been a response to the over production of food rather than a means to the end.

In its outright Dumpster Diving is not a sustainable action, but something that most people do in response to the over consumption that our existing world takes part in. Correction: Our existing world meaning “Western” world because travelling to places like Ecuador you find people eating the food that we tend to throw away – brown bananas anyone?

Bringing Dumpster Diving to the mainstream is something that I constantly struggle with especially now that I have been interviewed on the issue three or four times. Usually I agree to partake in the interview and then talk less about what I find and more about what is behind the issue: our waste, our demand for new, and our need for more. Glorifying the products that are obtained from the pirates of the commercial bins only creates a reaction from society. Industry responds by pouring meat on top of good vegetables, bleach on food, or locking of bins. It’s difficult to get large commercial entities to properly talk about these issues while engaging people about dumpster diving as it simply inflames the situation (read: they see dumpster divers as taking “money” that they wilfully threw away).

People who are dumpster diving are doing it for more than “political” reasons, but as a means to educate others about their existing consumption patterns as Ferne Edwards and David Mercer suggest in their “Gleaning from Gluttony: an Australian youth subculture confronts the ethics of waste” abstract.

There is a fine line between talking about Dumpster Diving and finding the right approach to prevent the waste from happening. For example, in the Blue Mountains the Katoomba food co-op simply puts out out-of-date food and produce in a box that is given to it’s patrons for free. Smaller communities sometimes will reduce the price of expired food and sell it rather than throwing it away. Groups approaching local bakeries and grocery stores to take home food that will go to waste is another approach. It is a harder issue to deal with when dealing with larger Big Box grocery stores because they are more concerned with the legalty of giving away this food. Although, in Melbourne two such organisations exist to deal with these issues: Second Chance (taking food twice a week from various markets that would otherwise be thrown away and making food to feed people on the street) and another stores that takes expired food and selling that in order to raise money for charity).

As an educator I'm just a bit sensitive about these issues as I spend a lot of time talking to people about food waste and glorifying dumpster diving is kinda not appropriate. Take for example the workshop I just did with some kids. I could have told them I dumpster dived but instead show them a piece of fruit that was being thrown out from a grocery store and something from a market and asked them to "spot the difference". Answer: They chose the food that was going to be wasted. So it's more important to deal with this through food education than tackle it from glorifying something that is more of a response.

Personally, I feel that this type of engagement is a much better way of trying to deal with our issues of waste and still diverting this waste at the same time. By engaging with public, writing letters, and trying to reduce our existing waste the act of dumpster diving is less about obtaining food and engaging the world on the “real” issue.

Do I want to dumpster dive forever? I hope not. It’s not a sustainable means of living for anyone. Plus the glory of jumping into a bin isn’t all that glorifying and doesn’t ensure that local farmers are able to stay in business – rather than big business farmers (yuck). I hope that we return to societies where all the stuff that is created has a stream for reuse. That when I demand honey I can’t necessarily walk into a store and expect to see 40 jars sitting on a shelf. Why? Because it’s not sustainable to keep putting so much energy into the food we eat without considering know much we waste.

I have had so much fun being a part of The Riot for Austerity/ 90% reduction project. The project started last June 1st and our family joined in July. Sharon Astyk and her friend Miranda were discussing George Monbiot's book "Heat", where he discusses the need for industrialized nations to reduce their emissions by 94%. They wondered what a life would be like lived that way, since Chinese peasants seem to be the standard for low impact living. So they challenged each other to reduce there consumption and emissions by 90%, which makes accounting easier than 94%. They did this on their blogs and what do you know, other people decided to give it a try as well. So they ended up being amazed that over 1000 people were interested in joining them. Before March 2007, I had never read a blog. I'm not sure I even knew what one was. I started by reading No Impact Man by Colin Beavin. His blog linked to Sharon's and The Riot, and that is what got me where I am today.

So today I am revealing what a year of rioting figures look like in our household. When doing the numbers, we figure up how we compare to the rest of the country in terms of consumption of resources. We are a family of four, living in the USA, so our numbers are compared to the average American or average American household. Figures can be represented as a reduction of average use or as a percent of average. I'll list both so as not to confuse anyone. There are seven categories for this project.

Gasoline: The average American uses 500 gallons of gas per year. So a typical family of four would use 2000 gallons a year. I break that down to 166.67 gallons a month. We used 230.72 gallons over a year. That is 19.2 gal/month and is 11.5% of average or an 88.5% reduction . And as reported previously, this does not include airline trips taken in November or any other time. So to be completely honest about the whole deal I am figuring up what these flights actually cost in terms of fuel use. I did a bit of research and found that according to one source a long haul flight gets 30mpg/person. Another site helped me figure out how many miles from home to Honolulu. 9,650 miles divided by 30mpg gives me 321gallons per person and with four of us equates to burning 1,287 gallons of gas for our vacation. A vacation I might add was planned and paid for 8 months before the riot began. Then in October my husband took my son to visit his Aunt and Grandmother. That adds another 198 gallons. Then in February our daughter flew to Indianapolis with my mother to go to a wedding and that adds another 73.4 gallons. So the grand total is really 1789.12 gallons. And that my friend brings us way down, or way up to 90% of average use or a 10% reduction.

Electric: The average household uses 900 kwh/month or close to 11,000/year. We used 4983kwh over a year. That is 415.25kwh/month so our usage is 46% of average or a 54% reduction. Many people doing the riot have the option of buying green energy. Wind and hydro give you an additional 75% reduction and solar gives you 50%. We pay for 750kwh of green energy each month, only ours is 5% wind and solar combined and the other 95% is landfill gas. I was never able to figure out what further reduction we should get. If in fact I could get a 50% reduction that would bring our electric use down to 23% of average or a 77% reduction. If it was more of a 25% reduction then it would look more like 35% of average or 65% reduction.

Therms: The average household uses 83.3 therms of natural gas per month or 1000 therms over the season, much of it is used for heating. We have used no gas heat this past year, but did heat water and cook with gas. We used 112 therms over the year or 9.3/month. That equates to 11.2% of average or an 88.8% reduction. Having purchased a solar water heater, our future outlook is 4-6 therms per month or about 60 therms per year. This would be 6% of average or a 94% reduction.

Garbage: The average person creates 4.5 pounds of garbage per day. A typical family of four would then produce 540 pounds of garbage per month or a staggering 6,480 pounds per year. We created 157.5 pounds of trash and 402 pounds of recyclables during the past 11 months that I have been weighing ALL our garbage. Recyclables count 80% of trash so the 402 pounds becomes 321.6 pounds. Adding the two together gives us a garbage total of 479.1 pounds for the time period or 43.5 pounds per month. That gives us 8% of average or a 92% reduction.

Water: The average person uses 100 gallons of water per day. That is 400 gallons per day for a family of four and 12 Kgallons a month. Over the past 12 months we have used 26 kgallons of water. According to the Riot rules, water for irrigation of food is not counted. We had a drought during our growing season and are estimating we used 6kgal to water the garden. That leaves us with 20kgal to account for. That would mean we used about 1.7 kgal/month which is 14% of average or an 86% reduction.

Consumer Goods. The average American household spends $10,000 a year or $833 a month. We easily spent the average amount of money since we purchased quite a few high ticket sustainability items such as a solar water heater, two low flow toilets, a pressure canner, a water filter, a new freezer oh yes and new windows. Having recently moved into a new/older house we have many things to upgrade and certainly not just for cosmetic reasons. A new roof is in our future as well as some new flooring. Not calculated.

Food: Food is a difficult thing to measure. Do you measure by weight, serving or by dollars spent. I never did any of these things because I could not keep track to that degree. So I can only say that our family went from eating a diet of mostly processed foods to one of few processed foods. We mostly buy fruits and veggies that are local and in season or pick directly from our garden. I have been buying much of our food from bulk bins and cooking dried beans and grains from scratch. The ideal that we have been shooting for according to Riot guidelines is to eat at least 70% of your diet from local and organic sources. Then 25% of your diet can come from bulk, dry goods like beans and grains, also loose tea or fair trade coffee. Then wet goods like conventionally grown meat, fruits and veggies, oils and milk should only make up about 5% of your diet. This last category is what makes up the larger portion of the average American diet. We started out at least at average and have ended up making it to 35% local/organic, 50% bulk, and 15% wet, conventional. This is the category we need the most work in. Getting enough local food is hard in a society that doesn't value it.

I enjoy calculating our numbers, heck I even enjoyed weighing all the trash. It was just so satisfying to see the difference you could make. Why don't you try some of the easier things. To make things even easier, there is a calculator on the Riot site that will figure things up for you. You don’t have to join the Riot, just become aware of how much of our planet's finite resources you are using.

The best advice I can give anyone in how to make a difference to our planet is USE LESS. Use less of EVERYTHING.

Extremely lame. Don't waste your money. The show lasted a little over an hour. There was only one ramp. All attendee had to stay on one side and watch which means if you have a small child he/she couldn't see the event. It took place on the parking lot of the amphitheater. Tickets were overly priced for the amount of time they performed. Of course, they hike up the price the day of the event (just like any other event) but that's not the issue, it was a complete RIP OFF. I was really dissapointed as a parent. My kids did not have a good time because they spent most of thier time guarding what little space they had so that they could see the tricks on ramp. PLEASE DO NOT GO or BUY TICKETS TO THIS EVENT.

A new report from the non-partisan Congressional Research Service (CRS) shows that the 110th Senate

A new report from the non-partisan Congressional Research Service (CRS) shows that the 110th Senate has approved a whopping 855 measures through unanimous consent, effectively skirting the ability to debate and amend many pieces of legislation that may affect the taxpayer. The report details the process by which these measures are passed, coined "hotlining:"

To clear measures for passage, party leaders contact each Senate office, relying in part on an automated telephone system known as the “hotline.” Every Senate office has a telephone line dedicated to receiving recorded messages from the Democratic and Republican Cloakrooms. Sometimes the messages, similar for both parties, state that the party leader would like unanimous consent for the Senate to call up and approve a measure. If a Senator is opposed to passing or agreeing to the measure in the stated time frame and without floor debate, the recorded message directs the office to contact the appropriate party cloakroom.

To be sure, many, if not most of the hotlined bills cost nothing, such as the naming of post offices or judicial confirmations. With others, this is not the case. Exhibit A: the Advancing America’s Priorities Act, coined as the "Coburn omnibus," which is a collection of thirty-four individual bills that failed to go through the hotline process because they were objected to by Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK). In some cases, Coburn objected to the cost of the bills, such as a proposal to spend $4 million to establish a Star Spangled Banner and War of 1812 Commission. In others, new legislation would duplicate laws already on the books, such as the Captive Primate Safety Act, which would spend $17 million to establish criminal penalties for the sale or transport of non-human primates, even though such activity is already illegal. Fortunately, 42 G.O.P. senators voted against invoking cloture on the bill, instead demanding a vote to increase offshore drilling.

The total cost of the omnibus? $10 billion and thirty-four new government programs. The moral of the story? Fiscal conservatives should decry the hotlining process and demand the ability to debate and amend. Any other story is a disservice to the so-called "world's greatest deliberative body."

The government wants your old-fashioned energy-hungry incandescent tungsten light bulb gone, and gone soon. But some people are willing to go to great lengths to hang onto the lights they love.

Incandescent bulbs - that's the traditional kind to you or me - waste 95% of the energy they use, according to Greenpeace. They calculate that phasing them out in the UK will save more than five million tonnes in CO2 emissions a year.

And yet some households are so attached to them that they not only keep buying them - they're stockpiling them ahead of the day when they're no longer available.

So how does an Argentinian researcher understand the impact of the wind produced by cows on global warming? To get these figures, the scientists collected the gas from the cow's stomachs in plastic tanks which were atttached to their backs.

I bet you're wondering what's next!! Scientists are now trying out new diets to improve the digestion of cows to reduce global warming. By feeding cows clover and alfalfa versus grain, moo-cow methane emmissions can be reduced by 25 % .

What do you do with excess garbage that landfills can no longer accommodate? For most, the immediate answer would be to recycle them. But for Ineos, turning waste into fuel is similar to turning trash to gold.

By 2011, this is what Ineos predicts to happen. They are planning to put up a large scale waste to energy facility which will ultimately produce bioethanol and help address the growing fuel problem the world is experiencing at the moment.

Ineos claims that its bioethanol, which can either be blended with petrol or replace it altogether, reduces greenhouse gases by 90% and avoids using food crops in the production process.

Mr Williams said: “The fact that we have been able to decouple second generation biofuel from food is a major breakthrough, and we expect our technology to provide cost competitive, sustainable, renewable fuels.

Scares on the landscape prevail at this place, great dashed in indentations of mindless human violen

Scares on the landscape prevail at this place, great dashed in indentations of mindless human violence, one race pitted against another fighting for a cause that here on these shores must seem so far away.

Standing in the echos of the past, the pulse of history beneath my feet, so much needless death. The electricity of what once happened here hangs like a pale mist in the air, its almost like you can still feel the fear the pain, I wondered what it would have been like to be here then.

A deathly silence sweeps over this place, the grass covers the blood soaked soils of yesterday the land of the dead covered over by the land of the living, all that remains on the surface is the deep embellishment of craters, impounds of a war long gone.

Would it really of mattered out there? The cause? The reason for one man to take arms against another, to mindlessly shoot, to kill to maim? would it really matter on the battle field who's side you were on, who was shooting at who, where the only game is survival. Piles upon piles of body's left, dropped, decaying, another wasted life for some ideal that matters not.

Underneath my feet lay the blood stains of old, the rancid rotten meat, the bones of just another life, picked up and dragged into a battle that was not there own, to defend a country that cares not. Millions and millions of people sent out to certain death, upon this ground on which I stood.

How did we all go so wrong? what is the need to hurt, to kill? to fight? a standard, an ideal, a set of reasons, nothing compares to the loss of an innocent life. Death hangs in the air, even he has forgotten the reason. Jagged, Sharp pieces of hot metal, tearing through warm flesh like a knife through butter, while the idea makers eat toast and drink tea.

Blood spilling out on soils unknown, while children play at home there father dies, torn apart, a broken body smashed upon the ground, and still the hail of shells rain on, one more life lost, one more forgotten soul to slip and seep with in the ground, yet more ruined life's. Will we ever learn.

Today still on we fight, intent upon destroying each other, we relish in the fact, bath like pigs in mud, basking in the glory of another day of suffering. Educated intelligent beings we are supposed to be, yet never more like animals do we play. We build and perfect ways to destroy, bigger better ways to end it all, for some long forgotten meaning, an idea of god, or some principle of what is right or wrong.

We oppress what we do not understand, we hurt and kill, blood lays on our hands, upon our boots, it fills the soils of our land. That darkened cloud comes bearing down upon us, fills and consumes us with hate and greed.

How do we hope to achieve our ends by killing one another? Smashing away at the ground, destroying things? for an idea? A set of principles of which there is no way of knowing what is right and what is wrong, when it all boils down to the fact these ideas are born from nothing, set in judgments that really matter not in this game of life.

I know it's a messy job but someone has to do it! Colonic irrigation is a procedure for removing waste and toxins from the bowel. It is also known as colonic hydrotherapy. It can help remove traces of faeces (stools) and other waste products and identify worms or parasites living in your gut.

In my personal experience over a 5 year period it has helped me to reduce my waistline along with increased energy levels (especially mental).

There are some people who believe it can help with conditions including bloating, flatulence (wind), diarrhoea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), fatigue, allergies, indigestion, constipation, multiple sclerosis (MS), and back pain. Colonic irrigation also helps with issues of constipation as well. If you skip one day without going to the bathroom then you're constipated and simply don't know it. Movements should be at least 2 to 3 times daily.

An alternative to colonic irrigation would be taking an enema which is better than nothing at all however, keep in mind that there is not sufficient water volume to fill the entire lower colon in order to cleanse deeply when compared to colonic therapy.

I know that children love those character lunchboxes. My daughters had them when they were young but, in retrospect, I would do a lot of things differently now.

First, I would buy lunch packs rather than lunchboxes. The ones with the lining to help keep things cool. They usually come with a pocket to hold silverware, napkins and other small items. These can be purchased during back to school sales, or even during clearance sales after school starts. You can also look at yard sales and in thrift shops.

It is not important that children have the latest character lunchboxes. What is important is that they learn the value of a dollar. Each year, they would want a new character lunchbox, but a lunch pack can last for many years. We have one that has lasted about five years, and is still going strong.

I would also purchase each child a hot/cold thermos so that I could send a larger variety of foods to school with my children. Again, I would find an affordable way to purchase these.

What goes into the lunch packs is just as important as the lunchbox itself. It is wise to pick up things as affordable as possible. Dollar stores may have what you are looking for in this area.

For instance, last month I purchased a three pack of sandwich containers. Each will hold one sandwich, or whatever else I decide to put into it. I only paid $1.00 plus tax.

Be on the lookout for different containers that will hold small amounts of foods. Yardsales are good sources. And a thermos for drinks as well. You will want to pack things like grapes, yogurt, and crackers, so look for different sized containers.

I also feel that it is important to send real silverware to school with our children, as well as cloth napkins.

It is important that our children learn not to be wasteful. Talk with them about this. Explain why it is important to reuse items, rather than throw them out. It is not only to help us to be thrifty, but it is also an effort not to add unnecessary waste to our landfills. In this way, we reduce waste.

I hope this helps some of you out. I will be posting more on school lunches soon.
