For some months now I've been taking more interest in scanning Internet use trends in China. Intuitively, I feel that China will be a centre of innovation and influence in the emerging Internet culture globally. The latest stats reported in the China Web2.0 Review reinforce my view.

At 253 million users, China now has more Internet users than any other country. Internet users with broadband amounted to 214 million. Sure, there is some way to go in terms of penetration overall, but the growth rate remains high (43 million new users were added in the first half of 2008 ) and the number of mobile Internet users now stands at 73 million. Mobile Internet growth rates exceed PC rates.

Overall use figures in themselves are of considerable interest. But it's the social change indicators in the use stats that are more fascinating to me. 107 million users (or 42% of all users) have blogs or 'spaces' online. Many users write posts on social networking sites. 70 million updated their blogs or spaces in the last six months. Over 80% of users listen to music online, use IM and read news online.

To me these figures say that Chinese Internet users have taken to the Participative Web in a big way. I have no doubt that innovative Web applications like Goofy2 foreshadow much more innovation from China downstream.

But if you want to make full use of the internet, just having a website is not enough. You have to market your website. Otherwise, you will be overtaken by your competitors who make use of these web marketing services. Internet marketing is very important for your website.

The primary function of internet marketing is to increase traffic to your website. More traffic to your website means more utilization and hence more business if you are a business owner. More and more people are looking for products and services using search engines and if Google or Yahoo or MSN does not list your website on the first 3 pages then you need to do something about it. Internet marketing involves a series of carefully researched methodologies. One of the leading web internet marketing services is Local Biz Network from California.

In Friday’s post, there was a bit about relying on “iconic individuals” etc…

In Friday's post, there was a bit about relying on "iconic individuals" etc..., which I don't think necessarily applies to the historiography of a lot of fields; but is probably still true of the historiography of physics, which tends to focus heavily on quantum mechanics, the atomic bomb, and the "big science" of tiny particles... and Einstein. This historiography concentrates on perhaps 2-3 dozen people. There are exceptions, of course, but simply creating exceptions to the rule does not create new narratives and interpretations of history. It's struck me that using new kinds of publication formats might be the best way forward. So I'm now in the initial stages of a two year project to create a web resource containing the biographical details on about 600 American physicists from the post-1945 period: members of the National Academy of Sciences, Nobel Prize and APS-prize winners, department chairs, members of major government or international committees, etc.... These names will then be interlinked through institutional pages (departments, gov't labs, committees...), and through major lines of research (assembling these from review articles, secondary sources...).

[caption id="attachment_287" align="alignleft" width="414" caption="From: David Kaiser, “Cold War Requisitions, Scientific Manpower, and the Production of American Physicists after World War II.” Historical Studies in the Physical and Biological Sciences. 33 (2002): 131-159."][/caption]

The project is inspired, in part, by current work of Dave Kaiser on the postwar physics "bubble" (when PhDs awarded in physics multiplied rapidly), and its attendant impact on teaching. Kaiser's work makes clear that the period brought major changes in what it meant to do physics. But this also has to do with "historiography from below". On Friday, we got into a nice discussion about shifting winds in the history of science profession, and how a rejection of triumphal histories and military histories have allowed historians to discount military R&D in their appraisals of 20th-century "science" in discussions of science and the state, etc. This discussion inevitably has political overtones, but the fate of historiography from below isn't necessarily bound to the shifting political winds. In this case, it involves things like the rich collection of non-professional history to be found in places like review papers, Physics Today (which is run out of the offices down the hall from me), and, above all, collections of biographical memoirs of the NAS.

These sources (as well as biographical files we have in cabinets here at the Niels Bohr Library and Archives) detail a history of physics that has little to do with the usual narratives. This stuff isn't written about much, because it seems very parochial. But, it also constitutes the bulk of physics work, and it behooves us as historians not to ignore what is all around us and to find something to say about it. It challenges us to construct entirely new narratives about things we simply cannot get at by placing text in context or conducting case studies. I really don't know what these narratives will be, and that's why I'm excited about this.

Some stray comments on the structure of the web resource

1) 600 is far from the full population of physicists; in fact, it represents a very elite contingent. As my boss, Spencer Weart has pointed out, we still get a much more diverse and representative history by opening up our history to the top 1% rather than the top .1% of the profession.

2) Some grant reviewers balked at the concentration on the "elite" award-winners, etc. (and I did, to my discredit, prominently deploy this unfortunate word in my proposals), and the suggestion that we allow practitioners to determine our "selection criteria"; isn't it our job to problematize these things? It certainly will be once our histories are superior to theirs, but I would claim that they are not. Physicists (if we bother to read the historiography from below) have been far more diligent than historians in recognizing not only sub-fields, but women and ethnic minorities who have been underrepresented in the profession. Long story short, the funding situation seems to be OK, but until the situation is finalized, I'll stay mum on the details.

3) The project is designed to be expanded to the pre-1945 era, to other countries, and to those not included in initial selection criteria. But you've got to start somewhere, and it's best to have some initial set of search criteria that are not totally arbitrary.

What is a webOS? Basically, it's a desktop on line which has applications like media players, word processors, email clients, etc. There are several ways to use them, schools and businesses would use them to give their students/employees access to a web desktop to work on and to stay connected with each other. But a normal person would use it to have certain files available to them at all times, such as music files, picture files, documents. G.ho.st is full of features. You can browse the web, search, and play youtube videos inside the window. Also, you can upload music files and listen to them on the media player, upload pictures and view them in the gallery, or upload documents and edit them in Zoho editor. You can do all of this in a pretty nice interface, well it might be a little too red.

I have only talked about the pluses of G.ho.st; so far.

There are a few things that are not so great about this webOs. When viewing the Internet from the interface, it's slow, especially if you are trying to view youtube videos. The graphics can be choppy at times, the menus can take a while to pop up, and sometimes it will just lag a bit.

Just tell me what I need to know!:

G.ho.st is great for uploading files that you want to have access to any where that you have Internet available. Files upload quickly, and music files play well inside the OS, it's not for browsing the Internet though, like i said, it's very,very slow. But hey! if you are using it, you have access to the Internet, so you don't need to browse from it. You get 5 GB of memory, and for every person you refer you get 1 more gigabyte. So if you sign up say crowverte referred you!

First of all, this is not a Silverlight vs Flash post or a Silverlight vs any other web technology.

First of all, this is not a Silverlight vs Flash post or a Silverlight vs any other web technology. I will stay focused on the benefits of Silverlight.

I used to make web applications using PHP, ASP.NET, Flash and several other techonology. When WPF and Silverlight appeared where I work, I just said "We dont need this, WinForms is ok, ASP.NET is ok if you include Ajax .NET and so many other technologies". This is normal, when you already know techonology you just dont want to move because you think that is going to be complicated, or because you dont know the advantages of a new techonology.

I started using WPF, and when I moved to Silverlight 2 Beta 1 I said "Oh my God why is this so difficult!". I just did a chat web service using Windows Communication Foundation using Duplex Channels and Silverlight and now that I know how to take advantage of this... I can say I am very proud of and happy to join the new vision of Microsoft (and come on, I am not a M$ fan but their technology is giving me something to eat lol), considering that here in Panama we are one of the first (if not the first) IT Outsourcing business using WPF and Silverlight.

I think they are going in the right direction and I believe Silverlight IS the future of the web. Flash is good, we all know that, PHP is good, Javascript is good... but for real and robust web applications I have no doubt that Silverlight will become the standard together with all the new Microsoft technologies. Silverlight is very scalable, so thats not a barrier to overcome for M$. Possibly not everybody have installed the Silverlight plugin right now, but thats is gonna change in the near future. From now on, I will stick to Silverlight... I love this new vision and if you dont know what is this new vision all about, I would like you to take a look to what is possible using Silverlight, thats is not just an "Animation Tool for the web".

Silverlight really, really is the new web.

Markup builder makes fragments of HTML to test, Groovy's built-in Sql is beginning to setup and check the results of data operations at a functional level. Soon I plan to implement a Groovy Struts 2 result and then it will begin to replace Freemarker.

The journal, Computers and Geosciences, is now preparing proofs.
For the most part then, as authors, we're essentially done.
However, we may not be able to resist the urge to include a "Note Added in Proof". At the very least, this note will allude to:

The work being done to refactor Annozilla for use in a Firefox 3 context; and

How annotation is figuring in OWL2 (Google "W3C OWL2" for more).

JQuery is a Javascript library which aims to simplify the use of javascript within html and make it

JQuery is a Javascript library which aims to simplify the use of javascript within html and make it more efficient. it is able to perform actions with one line of code which would normally take numerous lines of javascript.

Minifying is the automated process of minimizing the number of characters used in each action to the smallest amount, then used by JQuery. The resulting code will have the same functionality as the previous code, but load and run faster, and is often easier to understand.

JQuery has an inbuilt function :

$(document).ready(function(){ // Your code here });

which allows scripts to be run after the page has been loaded. In regular javascript, this type of action would require use of the onload attribute, often within the body tag. While this would require multiple lines of code, the built in ready function needs only one.

another useful part of JQuery is its chainability, meaning that actions previously spanning lines of code may be seperated by full stops in order to have each action follow on from one another.eg:

$("p.surprise").addClass("ohMy").show("Slow");

first finds any paragraphs named "surprise", then adds a class to these called "ohMy", and finally displays the content slowly

$("a").click(function(event){
event.preventDefault();
$(this).hide("slow");
});

with this code, as far as i can tell, it works when the specified link is clicked on. It stops the link performing the default action (opening the location), and instead hide the link slowly.

Prototyping is digit of the most essential aspects of our utilization process. We study the behave of prototyping to be a venture exculpation strategy. If approached correctly, we conceive that prototyping crapper turn the risks in Web covering development. In addition, by reaction risks we are ofttimes healthy to turn send costs.

Prototyping haw be finished in a sort of structure and it haw actually state more than digit method over the instruction of development.

We haw begin with assistance worn diagrams and flowcharts to equal User Interface (UI) elements and playing processes. These drawings are then regenerate into HTML-based prototypes of the UI that combine a bottom take of functionality.

Customer espousal tests are then embattled to writing the required functionality. These tests are then validated against the prototype, as substantially as the ingrained business, individualist and grouping requirements to secure that the test grouping meets the expressed goals of the project.

We accent to clients that investigating should begin primeval and should be carried discover continuously. Testing begins during requirements psychotherapy and prototyping when send managers impact with the client to amend high-level Customer Acceptance Tests that reassert the business, user, and grouping requirements.

During development, organisation tests secure that individual, useful packages of cipher at the minimal levels do what they are fashioned to do. Integration investigating ensures that every the parts (i.e. useful packages of code) that attain up a grouping duty unitedly to foregather the given requirement.

Final Acceptance Testing validates the complete grouping against the requirements as circumscribed during the requirements psychotherapy and prototyping phase. When every of the test espousal tests hit passed, the grouping should be primed for production.

Small releases wage constructive results to clients in a opportune manner, adding continuance to their playing processes as apace as possible.

Small releases also preclude the send from straying likewise farther from the witting goals before the content crapper be corrected. In this affectionateness diminutive releases crapper be thoughtful a venture exculpation strategy as well. The key to a diminutive promulgation move is to refer the individualist subsystems that attain up the large grouping and surpass those subsystems by importance. The most essential pieces are then delivered prototypal to add continuance quickly.

Pair planning is the most arduous to compel of every the utilization processes identified in this article. While we do not exponent unify planning in every instances, we do wager that there is enthusiastic continuance to be gained in some cases. Clients are mostly afraid most the utilization costs of a system. And patch the intent of having digit developers employed side-by-side on the aforementioned example of cipher haw seem counterintuitive, outlay fund crapper be achieved cod to shorter investigating cycles and inferior work as a termination of unify programming.

At the aforementioned time, managers wager the ingest of digit grouping on digit duty to be a squander of priceless resources, which crapper be genuine if the duty is not of decent complexity. However, in those situations where it fits, if calibre is accumulated and investigating and work reduced, then we conceive the trade-offs are warranted.

Theres a ton of PHP frameworks out there that will do what you want and will get the job done. But do you really need all of these features? So is there a reason why you should build your own framework?

First of all, how big is your project? How many projects do you work on? How much functionally are you looking for?

Second of all, do you have enough time and knowledge to build your own framework?

The first step is listing a few features that you need:

Basic XHTML document generation with the ability to add HTML titles, CSS, JavaScript, Icons etc.

A global template(or multiple templates) that can changed from page to page or stay static throughout the whole site.

Simple content placement, pages(determined by the URI)-would be loaded into the template.

Quick database access.

Data Sensitization.

...and go from there.

I like using OOP(Object Orientated Programming) for my framework because it makes things so much easier.

It's only as complicated as you make it. Just integrate the features that you need, keep it secure and keep tweaking it until it meets up to your personal standards.

The things that you should look for in any framework before it's used in public:

Freedom and flexibility

Quality and performance

Security

The ultimate goal for your framework should be to save time as well as to give yourself a little extra freedom. All you need to do is write up a plan and start coding:)

So… yesterday, when I found the link to get early access to the iPhone 2.0 software, of course

So... yesterday, when I found the link to get early access to the iPhone 2.0 software, of course I tried it and loaded it up right away. (Yes, I am that guy.)

I then proceeded to download a bunch of apps to my phone.

Now there are just some apps that I don't get why they are apps. For example, there is Facebook and the New York Times. Their iPhone apps are almost exactly the same as their iPhone Web site.

As the implementations of mobile Web browsers improve across mobile phones, increasing the use of new Web technologies (better CSS and JavaScript), there is a chance you'll be able to use the iPhone Web site again.

I can't imagine that Apple will ever license the iPhone OS so you'll never be able to see your iPhone app used on anything but an iPhone.

Now I can understand Sega's Super Monkeyball. That is a REALLY fun game for the iPhone. I can't imagine you'll be able to do that with a browser for a long long long time so I understand if you wanna make that an iPhone app.

But... why does Twitteriffic need to be an iPhone app? Didn't we get EXACTLY the same thing with Hahlo? Actually, I think Hahlo has more and better functionality.

With iPhone 3G, a lot of the speed, responsiveness, and interactivity issues with iPhone Web sites should be resolved.

Yeah... so when you start to think about time and resources around whether your company should build an iPhone app, ask yourself whether or not you're doing it because it's cool or you'll get a lot of people to use it.

Am I crazy? What do you think?

By the way, check out the Oregon St. special collections' PaulingBlog (linked on the right), if you haven't already. They just did a revamp of their site. I'm excited to see a large science history collection present regular features from their holdings (in this case the Linus Pauling collection). We are also the first mention on their blogroll, so big thanks for that! I mentioned the new AIP web project below, but the History Center's associated Niels Bohr Library and Archives is also looking for new ways to branch out on the web. We're (the AIP, I mean) currently putting a lot of our oral history transcripts online, some with audio clips (which I'm picking out; see, for example, the Gamow interview), but I think snazzier things still are in store, and The Pauling Blog is carving out a nice path forward.

Speaking of snazzy, The Pauling Blog and Michael Robinson's exploration blog have me thinking about moving this operation over to Wordpress, because that tool seems to have more potential than Blogger. This would mean that I'll have to put in more than the cursory work that I've been doing here, but would coincide with my plans to include some graphics, as well as interviews and guest bloggers. The summer's ticking away, and I believe I promised improvements some time ago!

Ross Dawson has launched the Future of Media Lifecycle framework developed for the Future of Media

Ross Dawson has launched the Future of Media Lifecycle framework developed for the Future of Media Summit 2008. Again, I do like the imagery created by Future Exploration Network.

I like the 'personal cloud' imagery to capture the way people store, create and consume content. Including 'conversation' in the Sea of Content helps to capture the participatory nature of social media, although 'life streaming' would fit just as well.

Viewing media as a personal cloud captures the way people consume and create media at work, socialising, in transit (mobile) and in the home. I agree that personalised location-specific and outdoor media may well be more interesting - i.e. of value - to people than mass-market marketing.

Reading Ross Dawson's blog posting got me thinking (as you do). I would say there are more clouds in the media lifecycle:

Social clouds - clouds where networked people store and share their sea of content

Community clouds - a community sea of content, created and maintained by groups of people with shared interests, including communities that endure over time, transcending individual influences.

In other words, fundamental social elements and actors map to the Cloud. And likewise, participation is in the home and mobile. Social and community clouds - as well as personal clouds - are wherever, whatever, and however you like.

Neil McAllister at InfoWorld raises a couple of good question on the relevance of Flash content being searchable (view the entire article here):

"if today's RIAs no longer resemble what we would call the Web, then is shoehorning those applications into the Web's infrastructure really the right way to go? If application developers feel limited by the constraints of standards-compliant browser technologies, should they really be targeting their applications for the browser?"

I spent some time today chatting with Rebecca, our Chief Marketing Officer, about how she views "Search". Rebecca did a ton of marketing consulting for large organizations before she joined the EffectiveUI team, and she had some terrific insight to share with me on the subject:

"Marketers are challenged today with how to drive traffic and leads towards their website; search engine optimization has become an attractive (if not the MOST attractive way) of driving qualified leads to your online presence. I always hated (as a marketing consultant) having to recommend to my clients that they had to make a choice between find-ability (search optimized html) and usability/engagement (Flash)"

Rebecca also lead the charge in creating the User Interface Resource Center. One of the core requirements of the UIRC was that its contents be search engine optimized. A recent article posted to the UIRC was an interview with Ethan Eismann, Senior Experience Design Lead for Adobe. After the interview, Ethan poked a little fun at us, asking why the site did not have a few "more engaging" elements (obviously commenting on the lack of any Flash content) - Rebecca's answer : "If we used Flash, people would not be able to find this article!". True... until now.

This renewed excitement for search in Flash content begs a much larger question to be asked:

"Is Search Always Relevant?"

The reality is, as "Web 2.0" starts to live up to its true potential, Search becomes less relevant. There is a major shift happening on the web right now, one that could threaten Search's dominance. So, what's the threat?

"Usefulness"

Search is all about content, and content (contrary to the cliche) is NOT king .....anymore. Describing the internet as a sum of all its content is diminishing its true power. The internet can (and is) so much more. The internet is the new Software Platform - where people not only go to get informed and entertained (view content), but also to pay their bills, collaborate with co-workers, upload and edit photographs, connect with family, manage projects, track sales, and a million other useful things... For all of these services, Search is irrelevant -- Let me clarify : Search will not help your customers pay their bill or edit their photograph - it will only help your customers FIND these services. Ultimately, companies that spend the time to provide true online usefulness will be the ones who dominate on the web. (and by the by, Sales Force, 37 Signals, eBay are already dominating because they found a way to extract great utility for their customers).

One of my favorite stories about the responsibility of marketers is one that I heard third hand (not even sure if its true). The story begins with Lee Clow, the Chief Creative Office for TBWA\Worldwide. Lee is a true visionary, and a legend in advertising. Once, a customer of TBWA (a major auto manufacturer) complained to him that their dealership visits were way up, but their sales remained flat. He responded with a simple, blunt and confident truth: "It's our job to get people in the door, its your job to build a great product". Search is NOT the answer to all of your online marketing woes - start with creating a better user experience, offering your audience something of real value, and respecting your customer's time --in other words, build a great product.

Finally, trying to optimize your site for Search can have a negative impact on its usefulness. Optimizing for search is creating your site for another computer to understand and consume. In almost every circumstance, this means you are making compromises to usability in order to make the site more searchable - you are making your product less meaningful in order to drive more traffic through it (Lee Clow would be ashamed)

Of the developments in IT solutions for various healthcare systems, hosted intranets offer one of th

Of the developments in IT solutions for various healthcare systems, hosted intranets offer one of the most exciting options. Especially for small size hospitals or healthcare practices, hosted intranets allow many options at low cost to enable these entities access to the twenty-first century. Some of the major benefits include variable degrees of integration with an existing system, easy start up abilities with low costs, no need for in-house IT expertise, and inherent privacy protection abilities in compliance with Australian privacy guidelines. By utilizing these web-based hosted solutions, all the benefits of using medical informatics can be realized with ease.

Suppose you have already acquired certain components of your office or hospital that are electronically operating well. You may not wish to repurchase these systems, retrain staff or transfer data at this time. What are you options? Hosted intranets offer great solutions by allowing you to tap into other web-based health informatics areas while integrating with your existing operations or systems. Options of integration exist as well that tailor to your individual needs. By using the services of hosted intranets, you can expand your informatics abilities without sacrificing the expense and effort already employed in your current system.

Similarly, if you are considering health information technology solutions, web-based hosted intranets allow great potential at low cost. If you are a small healthcare system or office, large investment capital is likely not available to purchase on-site hardware and/or software to make the leap into a paperless operation. In contrast, hosted intranets do not require specialized hardware and simply let you connect to their application over a secure network. Comparatively the cost is minimal, and monthly service agreements allow you to start and stop easily. This may be an advantage later if you choose to convert to an on-site system. More than likely, the benefits of a web-based intranet will be hard to replace even should your facility expand.

If you hadn't noticed, IT consultants or IT employees don't come cheap. Their expertise and technical experience increases your operations expense if you have on-site health IT solutions in many cases. Another benefit of hosted intranets is that on-site IT expertise is not needed. Secured private connections to the host is the only requirement for you and your staff to access your operations application and data. If something goes awry, experts at the intranet host site handle the problem without additional cost to you. This is one less headache that your facility has to deal with on a constant basis.

Lastly, web-based hosted intranets guarantee patient privacy of their information. Because intranets must comply in order to provide these applications for healthcare entities, they must adhere to governmental policies that ensure patient privacy. This allows your healthcare facility to relax under this guarantee knowing that there is nothing to worry about. If you are large enough to have a privacy officer, this can eliminate this position thus saving you in expense. Intranets will usually provide privacy compliance statements for you to have on file should any regulatory issues ever arise. This gives everyone greater peace of mind.

As you can see, hosted intranets provide a great many advantages over on-site health informatics solutions. This may or may not benefit your particular facility, but certainly it is worth considering because of the cost savings and many other benefits in outsourcing IT solutions that it can provide. No matter what your IT situation may be, web-based hosted intranets have a solution for you. If your healthcare facility is at a crossroads in choosing your next IT "step," intranets may just be your best option.

AJAX, or Asynchronous Javascript and XML is a collection of standardized web tools which can be used

AJAX, or Asynchronous Javascript and XML is a collection of standardized web tools which can be used for manipulating web applications and webpages. While it has existed for over a decade, the name "AJAX" only came into use in 2005. The fact that it operates "Asynchronously" means that while traditional webpages would be updated completely upon user input, AJAX pages are able to request and manipulate data in specific areas of the page, while retaining much of the page.

To do this, AJAX uses the XMLHttpRequest object, which queries the specified server for the information to be updated. Internet Explorer and Firefox both handle these objects differently; while IE requires it to be called as an ActiveX object, FF allows the XMLHttpRequest to be an object in its own right.

To check the progress of these requests, and perform actions based on it, there exists the property "readyState". This can have a value from 0 to 4, corresponding to the states from initialized to complete. Using this property, functions can be set to run, for example, when the process is at state 2, or when it has been sent.

It can be seen that the XMLHttpRequest is a powerful tool for web development, allowing for faster loading, more efficient and powerful web pages and applications.
