I remember back when the Wii was first launched, there were a whole load of articles that appeared online telling stories of Wii related injuries. I seem to remember that the wrist straps on the first Wiimotes weren't always that firmly attached, so during vigorous gameplay the Wiimote might fly out of a persons' hand and accidentally hit a bystander. Alternatively, there's a lot of muscles that you could possibly pull, joints (particularly knees) that you could twist, repetative strain injuries and those lovely tension headaches that come about as a result of sheer frustration.

Gaming injuries aren't anything new. We just seem to have developed whole new ways of injuring ourselves with this more physical form of gaming. In the past, hardcore gamers may have become the victim of repetative strain injuries in the wrists and hands. I remember an episode of the Simpsons where Bart asks Groundskeeper Willie why his hands are all clawed up, he replies 'Space Invaders of 198?' Granted I think Willie thought he actually been fighting some real aliens rather than an arcade game, but you see my point.

It's easy in our health and safety obsessed world [for some people] to worry about gaming related injuries.

This is the H&S obsessed world that required me to take 'ladder training' before using a ladder at my previous job. Since we as people always find new ways to injure ourselves with the most innocuous objects (9 tights and stockings related injuries per year in the UK according to RoSPA) I don't think that we should really worry too much about gaming related injuries. We're probably just as likely to injure ourselves putting on our pants in the morning as we are playing on a Wii.

My own gaming related injuries, while they may be varied, they really are typical. For example:

I've pulled muscles in my ribs playing Wii Sports a little too enthusiastically.

I've twisted both of my knee joints. Hurt like hell when coupled with a fun knee condition that causes the cartilage to pop out of the joint.

Wrist and elbow injuries, either through over enthusiastic game playing or accidentally smacking them into walls and the like during a game. You seem to loose spacial awareness after a while on the Wii.

My left hand (nunchuck hand) always aches after playing SSX Blur, probably from gripping super tight trying to steer.

My other half accidentally hit me in the head with the nunchuck, he's a lefty so when he accidentally let go of it, it kinda just smacked me in the head. He was rightly mortified and apologetic but I still milked it all day.

I accidentally hit my Ex in the head with a Wiimote, he probably deserved it but I didn't do it intentionally anyway.

Many, many repetitive strain injuries from playing PS2 games for hours on end. Sometimes I couldn't even hold a pen properly. That's either commitment or sheer stupidity.

Contact lenses being practically fused to my eyeballs after hours of gameplay with not enough blinking. Kinda feels like you've stuck sellotape onto your cornea. I've had to switch back to glasses for the time being, £120, the price of balancing gaming with your health.

My point really is that as gamers, we really should expect to be injured for our art. It's nothing new, and it is kinda funny seeing who can come up with the most outrageous gaming related injuries. Always strive to be the weirdest and get to number one on Digg. My mum is desperate to get hold of Wii Fit, my gamer senses are tingling and saying that maybe it's not such a good idea. She doesn't really understand that the injuries are all a part of the experience.

Maybe it's just the ramblings of a lunatic, but I like my war wounds and the sagas [definition: any narrative or legend of heroic exploits] that come with them.

Buying enough controllers for everyone to play isn't cheap. The Wii Remote will set you back $39.99, and the Nunchuck $19.99. That's $59.99 for a full set, and then multiply that times four. It would cost you $239.99 to buy controllers for all possible players. Now, some games can only be played with the Wii MotionPlus; how much will that cost to add to all four controllers. Apparently, not that much.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Nintendo President, Satoru Iwata, was asked, "Will Wii owners be forced to buy a Wii MotionPlus for each controller they own to play newer games?" Iwata responded by saying, "There will be games that will be enhanced by the Wii Motion Plus as well as games that can only be played with it. Users will need four if they have four controllers, but we're going to try to offer it for as little as possible. We haven't announced the price yet, but the cost of making the Wii Motion Plus is not that much, so I think we can make it very affordable." Low manufacturing costs means low retail prices, right? I sure hope so...

Final Fantasy VI Advance
Square Enix
2007 (original version 1994)
Game Boy Advance

This is a GBA port of the game that was originally released in the United States as Final Fantasy III for Super NES. As far as I know, the GBA version is pretty much the same game but with a few glitch fixes and changes in the text translation. Anyway, the game . . .

I have previously played through Final Fantasy I-V and I would definitely give FFVI the prize for best 2D FF. FFVI is much less linear than the previous games, resulting in a lot more freedom to do what you want when you want, especially in the second half. The down side to this is that it took me a lot longer to beat than the previous FF's. In fact, it took about 45 hours of playing time. Considering my short attention span, I definitely didn't blaze through this one. Rather, I took SEVEN MONTHS to slooooooooowly make my way through although you could probably do it in just a few weeks.

Anyway, there is a large cast of characters that you can rotate in and out of your lineup. They do have specialties but they all have the potential to become good fighters, good magicians, whatever. So, if you want to be super safe in the final battles, you can level everyone up and make everyone a badass and a healer. This is where I sank a lot of my playing time, actually. In previous FF's, I entered the final dungeons/battles underpowered and usually had to try over and over to beat them. This time around I spent way more time than necessary leveling everyone up and just coasted through to the end.

The music is pretty great and has a lot of variety. The designs are nice but typical 2D FF. The story is pretty detailed, deep and only slightly cheesy. Do it to it.

Grade: A
Conclusion: I can't believe there are RPGs that are 2-3 times as long as this one.

Boomblox
Electronic Arts
2008
Wii

SUPPOSEDLY, this game is the result of a collaboration with Steven Spielberg, credited as 'creative director'. I don't believe it. This game doesn't bear ANY hallmarks of Spielberg's past works, sensibilities, style, etc. Regardless, this is a pretty enjoyable game. The game consists of dozens of puzzles and scenarios that require to do various things with various items. Sometimes you throw baseballs or bowling balls, sometimes you fire a gun, sometimes you fling things around on a sticky string. You set off explosions, shoot goblins, collapse towers, so and soforth. As you might expect with the Wii, if you're throwing a ball, then you use the Wiimote in a throwing motion.

Some of the puzzles are pretty clever and will require a lot of thought while other levels consist solely of reflex-based play. There are "worlds" with themes like "escort the Mitten Kittens home on Halloween without being killed by monsters". These themes are just pretty ways of dressing up the gameplay to add visual variety. After awhile, things start to feel a bit too similar and interest wanes. There's a party mode that I haven't tried yet but this does definitely feel like a social type of game but by one's self it's better in spurts.

Grade: B
Conclusion: This is EA trying to be Nintendo/Namco/SEGA/etc.

AFL '99
Electronic Arts
1998
Windows 95

I recently dug this game out of the closet after years and years of neglect. I used to play this game quite a bit and for good reason: it's a very fun and challenging simulation of Australian rules football. Aussie rules is one of the few sports that's as simple as soccer. The game basically consists of punching and punting a ball to your teammates attempting to score goals between giant uprights. Hard tackles are allowed. That's about it. Sometimes the simple things are easiest to fuck up but this game pulls everything off most of the time. The kicking, the catching and running all work fine. Sometimes the punching (aka handballs) is pretty goofy, though, so I wouldn't rely on it. Everything is fast and furious and the commentary is even decent for a 1998 game. Some aspects don't work perfectly on Windows XP or Vista but the main game works fine.

Grade: B+
Conclusion: EA should make new AFL games

Rugby
Electronic Arts
PlayStation 2
2001

This game is very clearly a port of a PC game that came out a couple years earlier and it shows. The players are very blocky for a PS2 game. Actually, the graphics look like PS1 but in higher resolution. The gameplay is decent but pretty jerky as the players move fairly unnaturally and take about 500 years to change directions (no Barry Sanders in this game). The breakdowns (the parts where big guys push each other around) are somewhat luck-based and frustrating. The one area where the game really shines is in the running game. If you can get a good series of passes going you can really do some damage. With all the faults, though, EA proved they could do much worse with the following year's Rugby 2004, which changed everything and was awful.

For those that care, the modes in this game are 6 Nations, Tri-Nations and World Cup (but not the official licensed version of any of these tournaments).

Grade: C+
Conclusion: Winnie the Pooh, Winnie the Pooh, chubby little cubby all stuffed with fluff.

This Week In WiiDs - Issue Two - Motion Commotion

Hello and welcome to This Week In WiiDs, I’m Jack “The Jumpman” Smith and whether your at home, at work or trying to avoid the wrath of the League Of Gaming, this is the best place for news, views and discussion direct on the forum.

Welcome to Issue Two of This Week In WiiDs, published on August 1st 2008, your weekly round up of all things Nintendo while the podcast is on Hiatus. I aim to bring you everything you love about the show, plus a little extra straight to the forums every week for your viewing pleasure.

Question Of The Week

This weeks Question of the Week is from Daisy_Blonde:

If you could remake any PC game on the Wii, what would it be and how would use the Wiimote with it?

Thanks for the question Daisy_Blonde!

Hmm... good question (by which I mean no idea what to say). I think i’ll go for something old and something new. First, the old. Without a doubt it would have to be the Monkey Island series. They are without a doubt some of the best adventure games out there and a revamp with pointing controls would fit perfectly. It would be great to see the originals done to the standard of Monkey Island 3 and the Wii’s point and click interface was made for this sort of game. As for the new, I would love to see a version of Spore on the Wii. It’s possibly the onloy game i’m going to buy for my Mac so any other versions will be nice :P The Wiimote would be perfectly suited to twisting, turning, expanding and sticking pieces onto your creatures, while the mix of analogue and IR controls would suit the games movements perfectly. You could even have some one to one clubbing action ;)

Thats my thoughts, but what about yours? Please reply to this weeks issue with what PC games you would want to see remade on the Wii.

-----

If you have a question of the week for This Week In WiiDs, please send me a PM and i’ll be sure to use it. Any unused questions will be forwarded to be used on the podcast. If you want to get in touch with the team, you can email them at Wiidspodcast@googlemail.com and if you register this link on your Wii we will send you a message to your Wii as soon as we are back on air as well as when further episodes are released.
News

This weeks headlines are:

Wiimote Takes Name, NCSX Gets Ass Kicked

The League Of Gaming Vs R4

Inmates See 18+ Games Locked Away

Homebrew Hacks Open Up DVD Library

Wiimote Takes Name While Weemote Kicks Ass

Online retailer NCSX have been told they will face legal action if they continue to use the phrase “Wiimote” on their websites. The request has came from a small company known as Fobis Technologies who own the trademark for the Weemote, a special TV remote for children with parental control. Apparently the Wii Remotes nickname has been damaging their sales and they have had enough of it. The problem is though, that they cannot approach Nintendo about the issue as Nintendo only use Wii Remote in their documentation. NCSX have complied with Fobis’s demands and had the following to say:

Last week, we received a letter from a law firm representing a company which holds the “Weemote™” trademark. The letter stated that we were to stop using the term, “Wiimote” in our product descriptions and NCS Game Notes™ because our actions could possibly cause confusion in the marketplace. NCS respects trademarks and ©opyrights since we also own trademarks and copyrighted material so we’re obliging even though we think it’s a bit of a stretch… but whatever. From this day forth, the word “Wiimote” has been banished from N©S’ shopping sites and replaced with the word “Wii Remote™.” We (wasted) spent about an hour on Friday making sure the term “Wiimote” was waxed from the NCS shopping experience. We’ll endeavor to search and replace instances of the word “Wiimote” on our other websites by the end of the month. We wouldn’t want the “Weemote™” trademark holder to be supposedly damaged by our conjunction of the words “Wii” and “Remote.” We’re thinking of coining a new word - “Wii-rote” or maybe just “Wote.” As in, “Wave your Wote in the air. Wave it like ya just don’t care.

The League Of Gaming Vs R4

The R4 and other flash carts have always been a thorn in the Nintendo DS’s side, due to the majority of owners using them to illegally download games for free and until now it has generally been left alone by the games companies... But not anymore! Nintendo and 54 other software companies (including, Arc System Works, SNK, Capcom, Koei, Jaleco, Square Enix, Sega, Taito, Takara Tomy, Temco, Hudson, Bandai Namco Games, The Pokemon Company, Yukes and Level Five) have joined forces to try and take down the flash cart kings. The League of Gaming (as I like to call them) are filing a lawsuit with the Tokyo District Court to prevent the marketing, sales and importing of such devices under the Unfair Competition Prevention Law.

While the injunction is for Japan only, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the League Of Gaming try and tackle other large markets (such as USA and China). The article I got this news story from is a little vague as to wether this affects just the R4 or all flash carts. Wile the R4 is definitely the most well known flash cart, it is quickly being overtaken by dozens of clones and competitors who deliver a more superior service, so if they are solely targeting the R4 then it isn’t going to exactly solve the problem. Tackling piracy is always going to be a tricky battle for several reasons. Firstly, the legality of Flash Carts needs to be looked at, as while they are able to cause piracy, they are also there for homebrew and storage, which is what they are marketed as. Also, it’s difficult to attack the companies uploading ROM’s as they are normally located in countries where holding backups is legal and therefore cannot be easily prosecuted. Therefore wether Nintendo will be able to place enough pressure on the legal system or not to overturn these issues remains unknown. However, by anyone standards, this is one of the biggest attacks against piracy we’ve seen in a long time and with such a large driving force behind the case, it will be very interesting to see the results.

Inmates See 18+ Games Locked Away

This week has seen faces of horror across the prison cells of England and Wales as new measures ban the playing and possession of 18+ games for inmates. Also revealed was that no more of the taxpayers money would be spent on games or games consoles in the future. Instead, only those prisoners who have reached the highest level of the Incentives and Earned Privilages program and inmates who are at risk of suicide will be given access to games, providing they pay for their own console and any under 18 titles they may wish to play. Last year over £10,000 was spent on gaming for inmates. Geff Dobson, deputy director of the Prison Reform Trust acknowledged that gaming provides a useful resource for prisons, but shouldn’t be a substitute for more beneficial activities.

"I don't think anyone would have a great problem with incorporating these into a good behaviour programme, but we should not forget the usefulness of these games to prison officers and governors keeping order in overcrowded prisons,""But the bottom line is access to computer games is no substitute for purposeful activity like work or education classes, both of which are being cut back because the government is failing to tackle the underlying reasons for the rise in the prison population."

Prisoners being treated like prisoners? Thats a new one. I see this as a smart move, as the funding that would have been spent on gaming can now be used to try and tackle some of the real problems with our prisons system. It also gives inmates more of an incentive to behave during their time locked up and can give them a sense of accomplishment during their sentence. With all the controversy about violent games over the past few years, it’s a surprise these games haven’t been removed from our prisons sooner. After all, if they are supposedly turning our children into violent thugs, then it certainly wouldn’t be helping those who have already proved they have the means and capacity to act out such crimes.

Homebrew Hacks Open Up DVD Library

This is a follow up story of Pirates Play Unmodded Wii’s from issue 1 of This Week In WiiDs. In this news story I spoke of hacker Bushings attempt to work with Nintendo to block a bug that allows pirated games to be played on an unmodified Wii. Unfortunately, Nintendo have refused to correspond on this issue. This bug has now been modified into a safe program which allows clean DVD’s to be played through your Wii. What’s more is that this program cannot be turned into a “softmod” to allow pirated games to be played. The program is due for release within the next week.

I find this story very interesting for several reasons. First of all, now the existence of this bug has been made public, several groups are trying to find it, meaning that eventually we’re going to see piracy grow pretty quickly, and it’s strange to see Nintendo not interested in preventing this. Of course they may already know of the issue and be working on it...

Also the idea of a clean DVD player with no modifications is excellent. Currently DVD solutions rely on modifying consoles or burning special disks, but a simple download and play solution opens up a lot of possibilities. It also means that Nintendo could create their own program for download in the Wii Shop and allow DVD access with no hassle, which would certainly be convenient.

New Announcements

This is the new announcements section, where each week we tell you what new titles have surfaced and are on their way to you soon.

This week we’ve had a good mix of DS and WiiWare Announcements. First up is Time Hollow for DS. This adventure game by Konami sees you trying to solve puzzles in the present, by altering events in the past. It looks gorgeous with it’s anime style and if it uses the time mechanic well, this will be a must for fans of Phoenix Wright and Hotel Dusk Source

Popcap are also turning their attention to the DS with the announcement that the fantastic Peggle is being adapted to DS. Q Entertainment (Meteos And Lumnies) are behind this new adaption and will be bringing everything from the PC game, plus exclusive levels and a slew of new features to the mix. This is definitely one to keep an eye on/preorder right now. Popcap will also be bringing Amazing Adventures and Mystery Pi to the DS which see you searching for hidden objects. Source

This october we will also be seeing Suda51’s bomb diffusion masterpiece, Flower, Sun and Rain. I’ll post the first trailer once it’s released, but you can be sure this is one to watch/buy Source

The last DS game this week is a remake of The Humans. This is a Lemmings like game, only you are given direct control of up to eight prehistoric humans at once as you try and navigate your tribe to the exit. Source

Now, onto the WiiWare. First up is Fun! Fun! Minigolf by Shin’en. It promised 27 holes of Fun, Fun and Minigolf Source

Next up is Big Kahuna Party, which will see you swapping titles in much puzzle based fun with a relaxing underwater theme. This version is going to focus more on multiplayer than its PC counterpart Source

This week Marvelous have announced that they are making a brand new title for WiiWare. However, no details are currently known. Source

Wiikly Feature

The Wii Remote. It’s revolutionised the way we play our games by adding motion control to the mix. But how does our pointing and waggling translate into the gaming worlds?

The Wii Remote uses two main pieces of technology to generate three forms of motion sensing. An infrared camera is used for tracking a stationary focus point for position tracking, while an accelerometer is used for measuring physical and gravitational acceleration.

Pointing Power

The first thing you do after turning your Wii on is point at the screen and direct your cursor to the channel of your choice, but how does the Wii Remote work out where you are and what your doing? All the work is done by infrared detecting camera in the top of the Wii Remote. Obviously in order for an infrared camera to work, you need infrared lights, which is what the sensor bar is for. The sensor bar comprises of ten infrared LED’s in total, arranged in two sets of five (pointing slightly outwards at the end of each group), distance x apart. These sets of LED’s are then focused into two points, with a distance of y between them (this distance decreases the closer you are to the sensor bar), which are then mapped on the Wii Remotes 0.8 Megapixel camera. A central point between these two dots can then be used to map a cursor onto your screen. By mapping the infrared points as they move across the imaging sensors grid, the Wii can fluidly move it’s cursor as you move your Wii Remote. The motion camera can also be used to determine your distance from the TV, by triangulating distances x and y.

Waving and Waggling

In order to translate your physical movement into the game, the Wii Remote uses a tri-axis accelerometer. As the name suggest this can be used to measure acceleration in six directions: up, down, left, right, forwards and backwards. Acceleration is measured using a silicon beam anchored at one end, suspended in an electrical field. As the beam moves with your physical acceleration, this affects the electrical field that it is suspended in and the readings can then be translated into direction and acceleration. One issue with accelerometers is that they cannot measure how far you have moved, only how fast. That is why a short flick and a long stroke in Wii Sports Tennis result in the same action. As it cannot track movement, this is why most movement will result in a preprogrammed response rather than actually mapping your movement.

Orientation and Rotation

As well as physical acceleration, the Wii Remotes accelerometer can also be used to measure the natural acceleration of gravity. Instead of measuring the acceleration of gravity, this feature comes into use when the orientation of the Wii Remote is necessary. As you rotate the Wii Remote vertically or forwards and backwards, the accelerometers respond to the gravitational pull and move out of their neutral position towards the gravitational pull. This can then be used to determine the orientation of the Wii controller. An example of this technology in use would be using the Wii Wheel in Mario Kart. By tilting the Wii Remote from side to side, the accelerometer reads the shift in gravity to the left or right of the device and then uses this information to determine how far to turn your car.

What Can’t Wii Remote Do?

One of the Wii Remotes main limitations is that the accelerometer is being used for both acceleration and rotation. This means that the Wii cannot perform both of these actions at once, limiting the potential of the Wii Remote. This means that, for example, is you wanted to do a sword slash, you are limited to the six directions of the accelerometer, thus making the experience feel limited and stifling.

The other problem with the Wii Remote is that it is impossible for it to track horizontal rotation. As all rotation is handled by gravitational acceleration, if you change the direction of the Wii Remote while keeping the gravitational point in the same place, no readings will be picked up by the Wii Remote. Having a whole axis of rotation inaccessible means that some precise movements are currently unavailable to us.

The Solution - Wii MotionPlus

Fortunately, Nintendo have found a solution to the Wii Remotes flaws in the form of Wii MotionPlus. This small expansion pack contains an X,Y axis gyroscope and a Z axis gyroscope. When these gyroscopes are combined with a tri-axis accelerometer they form an Inertial Measurement Unit, which can accurately track human motion. The gyroscopes are used to accurately measure all forms of rotation, including horizontal rotation. Not only is this more accurate than the accelerometer but also leaves it free to track physical acceleration. Therefore, it is now possible to accuraately measure angle, direction and speed, which can be combined to give a fluid, responsive motion which reflects your exact movements, giving us 1:1 control in our games.

WiiDs Online

Welcome to the Online section of the magazine, where we take a look at what’s new for download on the Wii, say hello to some new faces and take a look at the best forum topics this week.

Download Station

This week is WiiWare week for Europe and we’ve received a nice selection this week. First up us Defend Your Castle (500 points). Te basic idea of the game is to fling, throw and and generally destroy a stick figure army attacking your castle. There are a variety of upgrades and an ever increasing difficulty, combined with its quick simple fun makes this a worthwhile purchase for the small 500 point price tag. Also out this week is Wild West Guns (1000 points). This western arcade shooter offers plenty of blasting action as you shoot down targets and hostile enemies while avoiding the innocent. If you loved the shooting range in Wii Play or Links Crossbow Training this is definitely worth a download.

Over in North America there is two Virtual Console and one WiiWare game to download. First up is Chase H.Q. for Turbo Grafx 16 (600 points). This racing game sees you playing as police in pursuit of a vehicle. The game plays across a traditional three lane system and while the idea is interesting, the game is plagued by sluggish gameplay and annoying time limits. Next up is Art of Fighting 2 for the Neo Geo (900 Points). It looks and plays very similar to a Capcom fighting series based around fighting on the streets, but offers an interesting mental energy system. Using power ups uses mental energy, and taunting your opponents can deplete their mental energy. Thus there’s some added strategy as exhausting your opponents energy will leave them powerless. So if your interested in a fighting game not based on street fighting, be sure to give this one a look. Finally we have Pong toss for WiiWare (800 Points). This title is the reincarnation of Beer Pong, only without any beer. The aim of the game is to flick balls into cups in order to score points and outmaneuver your opponents. While the game is rather simple, a few friends and a few beers might make this an interesting party piece.

New Members

No new members this week, get out there and pester people to join! :P

Topic Of The Week

This section is for the best news and discussions started by you the listeners. Be sure to check the following topic and post.

This weeks Topic Of The Week is by What is a “Videogame”? by ChronoDiem. The thread looks at what actually makes a game and whether some developers are forgetting about the joys of simplicity. There’s some very interesting points in this thread so it’s definitely worth a read and if you have any thoughts, be sure to let us know! Check out the thread here.

And Finally...

Love the Wii? (Yup) Love Canoes? (Maybe...), then this is the ultimate appliance for you! This twin screw electric canoe can be controlled entirely with the motions of a Wii Nunchuck. Soon we can all enjoy cruising down rivers at a relaxing 4.5 knots while we idly daydream of our dream titles, proving you don’t drift off too far and crash into a rock or an island. You can view future of Canoeing here.

-----

Thats it for another Week In WiiDs. Please let us know your thoughts and opinions on the following topics as well as any feedback.

It's working! This is a quick, down and dirty video of the prototype. Most of our early problems came from our pen, but these were quickly resolved. After that, it was relatively easy to calibrate and it worked equally well on a whiteboard and on a light colored wall.

In the video I mistakenly mention that the pen's button acts like the right mouse button, but it's actually the left. Imagine interacting with any and all of your computer applications this way. There are some really interesting possibilities out there. I'm looking forward to experimenting with this using Word, Hot Potatoes web-based activities, and more. Do you have other ideas? Leave me a comment.

I've always been interested in interactive whiteboards (aka Smartboards) but they always seemed a little unattainable at a cost of several thousand dollars. When I saw the TED Talk about $50 Smartboards created from a Nintendo Wii controller (a Wiimote), I was intrigued.

Peter (our indispensable ESL Tech Support guru) and I hacked together the infrared pen from Radio Shack parts and borrowed a Wiimote (thanks, Rob!) to get it together. Some of my notes are on my website.

Initial results are a bit shaky, but look for a full report here soon about how it works and how it can be used in the classroom.

Nintendo has been the Apple, Inc. of gaming companies, in my opinion, for quiet some time because of

Nintendo has been the Apple, Inc. of gaming companies, in my opinion, for quiet some time because of their innovative ideas and creative, appealing and slick style. At a young age, my father introduced me to the classic brothers, Mario and Luigi. This duo has been the backbone of Nintendo as a company. They've become a symbol used to define Nintendo. Mario especially has been through it all. Mario has also been in it all, in that he's been a part of every Nintendo hardware release (e.g. NES, Game Cube, Nintendo Game Boy, Nintendo DS, etc.). He's spent time on an island in Mario Sunshine. He's played countless sports, including tennis, baseball, golf and basketball. He's traveled through time, rocked out mini games with his friends, competed in the Olympics and even been as thin as a piece of paper.

The world was introduced to Paper Mario in 2001. At the time, I was an avid Nintendo 64 user and really got into the game. With the next release in the series, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, I skipped the opportunity to play merely because it seemed repetitive. Nintendo seems to have succeeded in capturing the hearts of original Paper Mario fans, however, with the release of Super Paper Mario for the Nintendo Wii. This member of the Paper Mario series adds new, creative gameplay, making the game fresh, yet still recognizing the classic ways of the Paper Mario saga.

GAMEPLAY
Reincarnating the warm feel of a paper world, Super Paper Mario includes some new ways to remind us as the player, that we're in a futuristic 2-D world. The transitions between scenes or when new things appear are much more visually appealing in that a black line accompanies these events, outlining the soon-to-be object, just before it appears. It gives an entirely new vibe to the player about the world. You feel less like you are in a paper world, and more like you are in a world of drawn out lines.

Most gameplay is completed holding the WiiMote in a horizontal position, with your left thumb over the arrow pad and your right thumb over the 1 and 2 buttons. As the game progresses, however, you will find reasons to switch the position in which you hold your WiiMote. On some occasions, to use items during battle, you'll need to shake your WiiMote gently up and down to power up. In other instances, you'll want to point the WiiMote directly at your screen in search for hidden items, using one of your sidekick's powers.

MULTIPLE DIMENSIONS
The most significant and fresh change in Super Paper Mario is the ability to change between the 2-D and 3-D dimension. Early on in the game, you earn this ability after paying a psychic-like man to give you the power. From then on, simply press the A button to switch back and forth between 2-D and 3-D gameplay. This new feature, to me, was the most creative and impressive when playing the game for the first time. Multiple dimensions makes gameplay more challenging and interesting, as you're always thinking about what entering the other dimension could possibly do for the situation you're in. The game becomes something like a puzzle you need to solve with obstacles you need to overcome. In my opinion, gameplay became less frustrating because of the ability to change between 2-D and 3-D dimensions. When you cannot find the answer in one, moving to the other dimension almost always finds you what you're looking for. For example, while swimming in the ocean (as one always does at least once in a truly classic Mario game), to avoid running into HP damaging fish, switch to 3-D mode and you'll remember that these fish are paper thin. Simply swim behind the fish in 3-D mode and you're past them in no time. No need to wait for an obstacle or potentially harmful creature to steer out of your path when they're ravor thin.

SOUNDTRACK
Though this isn't the most obvious observation one makes while playing a video game, I think the soundtrack to a game creates the overall feel for a particular scene. For example, in terms of Nintendo, most fans can immediately recall the difference in music when you are running through your classic Mario Brothers scene, jumping up and shattering bricks, as opposed to when you are dodging fireballs in Bowser's castle. In Super Paper Mario, Nintendo definitely created a pleasant, relaxing soundtrack, which throughout the game leaves the player calm, with the exception of battle scenes of course. However, usually, each game has a unique sound or instrument associated with it. In Mario Sunshine, the soundtrack reminded you of a summery, island atmosphere. In Super Paper Mario, there is not a memorable, original song that can be associated solely with this game.

CHANGES & SIMILARITIES
Overall, Super Paper Mario, as a game, is very charming, not only because of its remembered similarities, proving to the gaming community that it is definitely a unique Mario game, but also due to its welcome, fresh changes. In this version of the Paper Mario series, Nintendo has shied away from using sidekicks to Mario that would be expected (e.g. a friendly Koopa). In Super Paper Mario, we are introduced to Pixls, which are basically colorful, 2-D stencil-like drawings, that remind you, in a way, of fairies. You are originally placed with Tippi, a Pixl resembling a butterfly. Each Pixl has a specific power which you will progressively need as the game goes on. For example, Tippi's power is the ability to find and reveal hidden or invisible things; in most cases, these are doors.

Another change in Super Paper Mario, is that gameplay has somewhat steered away from battling and raising your HP. As you move throughout the worlds with Mario and jump on creatures, they are KOed right there, instead of requiring a battle, like in the original game. However, Mario does still level up after knocking out enough creatures on his quests and the player is notified of this. Also, at the end of most major chapters, Mario does battle a follower of Count Bleck and as this takes place, you are restored to the classic Paper Mario style of battle, using your own attacks as well as those of your sidekicks'.

This brings me to my next topic. For the first time in a long time, Mario is not in search of a kidnapped friend (in most cases this would be Princess Peach), being held captive by King Bowser. This time, a new creature named Count Bleck, who appears to be Pixl-esque himself, is threatening to destroy the world. In Super Paper Mario, as the game progresses, you gain the option to play as not only Paper Mario, but Paper Luigi, Paper Princess Peach and Paper King Bowser. Each character owns their own abilities which will be necessary in different situations throughout gameplay.

Don't worry, though. Nintendo hasn't changed Paper Mario entirely. There are still many familiar things throughout the game that remind you that you are playing not only a Mario game, but a Paper Mario game. In the first chapter of the entire game (Chapter 1-1), the world you are in is the exact dynamic of the classic Super Mario Brothers opening scene. In this case, it is just presented in a 2-D, paper manner with more modern colors. The Save cube that Mario must hit to save is exactly the same as the original. What I found most interesting is that when Mario catches a mushroom that has been released from a box, he now has the ability to become insanely large, like in New Super Mario Brothers for the Nintendo DS. I thought this was a welcome addition because it was somewhat comforting for Nintendo to connect both the DS and Wii's current generation of Mario.

So, what is the final verdict? I'd have to say that the verdict is Super Paper Mario is most definitely a welcome addition to the Paper Mario series. It conserves original concepts and themes, yet takes them to a newer, creative level with multiple dimensions and new forms of gameplay. Super Paper Mario truly embraces the next generation of Nintendo and the Wii console. I'd say that any long time Paper Mario, or even Mario Brothers, fan will not only enjoy but appreciate what this game has to offer to gamers today. Its challenging, yet relaxing; a tough combination to find in harmony these days.

What did you think of Super Paper Mario? What are some of your other favorite Wii games? If you're not a Nintendo fan, share your story as to why not. I'd love to hear from you in the comments.

Lately I have had some more time to enjoy the occasional video game. For a few years now I have had

Lately I have had some more time to enjoy the occasional video game. For a few years now I have had an obsession with being able to beat Gradius V. For those who don't know Gradius V is one of the more popular titles in side scrolling shooters. The game requires you to be able to watch many bullets flying around your ship which being able to take down the necessary enemies. In order to make the game more manageable the hit box for your ship is insanely small. Gradius V could almost be considered a Maniac Shooter, but it falls short in that category because there simply aren't enough bullets on screen (if you have ever played a true maniac shooter... then you would know).

Even though this game can be insanely frustrating at times it is well worth playing if you can stick with it. When you beat a level it is quite an awesome feeling because of the shear difficulty involved. If you can beat a level without losing a single life, that is even more incredible. I really enjoy challenging my ability to move the ship just tiny bits in order to avoid tight obstacles and swarms of bullets/lasers. It is a true test of one's ability to have precise control. It is games like this that still bring glory to the standard video game controller. Even though I am a huge fan of the Wii, I can't see any of the motion sensing features of the Wiimote being used in a Gradius type shooter.

After finishing a game like Gradius V it makes me think there is still a place for the traditional video game controller. I hope to continue playing Gradius V and maybe, some day, I will be able to beat it on a difficulty other than 'very easy' (which is anything but... IMO).

Ever wonder why Nintendo doesn’t refer to their latest console’s controller as the Wiimo

Ever wonder why Nintendo doesn't refer to their latest console's controller as the Wiimote? It's because there has been one on the market for years. Named the Weemote, this TV remote is designed for kids and allows parents to program the stations they find suitable for their children. Created by Fobis Technologies, the Weemote was trademarked back in 2000, long before the Wii was ever debuted.

Nintendo has never called their device the Wiimote to avoid a lawsuit but they don't have to; fans do it for them. Dubbing the object this catchy and fitting phrase, fans have created all the word of mouth ever needed to push the nickname into the headlines. Unfortunately, this has slowed sales of the actual Weemote drastically and it doesn't seem like the world takes any consideration of their idea. I feel for ya Fobis Technologies. Come have a drink with Philo Farnsworth and I.
