Last night, your mother and I spent a couple of hours working on a music CD that we would distribute

Last night, your mother and I spent a couple of hours working on a music CD that we would distribute to "announce" your reality. I love creating soundtracks like that, but she actually had much of the input.

I tend to like darker, more edgy music. She likes the folkier, popier stuff.

We settled on a few and are rearranging the order a bit.

Circle of LIfe - From the Lion King Musical. It's a great version with big big African sound. Your mother studied African history and loves the culture.

What a Wonderful World - With Louis Armstrong. This is a very old song, but it sounds timeless. We lose points for originality because it was used in an episode of Moonlighting.

The Things We've Handed Down- Marc Cohn. Your mom loves this guy and this song is about his daughter.

New Soul- Yael Naim. We stole this from the Macbook Air commercial but it's a cute song and we didn't have enough women in the album.

The Obvious Child - Paul Simon. I love the refrain "why deny the obvious child" because it can be read as "why deny the obvious, child" and "why deny the obvious child." Also "I don't expect to sleep at night."

Sweet Child of Mine - Sheryl Crow. I originally thought the Guns n' Roses version would be a nicer boost, but it never fit the album.

Original of the Species - U2. This is my favorite band. We have a long history together, and this song really encapsulates how I'd like to raise you.

Under Pressure - David Bowie and Queen. I got the idea for this one from Gross Point Blank, a movie with John Cusack (your mother's favorite actor). But it's a nice change of pace.

Let My Love Open the Door - Pete Townsend. I'm still debating if this one will work. I love the song but not quite sure if it fits

The Times They Are A-Changin' - Bob Dylan. Just the title makes sense and your mom is on a BD kick right now.

Teach Your Children Well - Crosby, Stills and Nash. For obvious reasons.

Down Under - Colin Hay. Fun jokey song about what's going on "down under."

The Waiting- Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Because it is the hardest part.

Natural Childbirth - Bill Cosby. This is not a song, but it's a story he told about how he and his wife were giving natural child birth. It'll be a hidden track on the album.

Several songs were rejected: Thin Air by Pearl Jam, the original Guns n Roses version of Sweet Child of Mine, Eat for Two from 10,000 Maniacs, and New Sensation from INXS. All too dark or too heavy or poor tone match with the album.

Surprisingly, most of the songs are by men. I don't know what that means except that men maybe find music as a socially acceptable way of expressing how they feel about their children. Women can express their feelings openly, but men have to add layers to it so it doesn't make us look weak?

Not sure if its true, or that these songs are indicative to it, but it's an interesting thought. Maybe one day you'll find out.

A idéia é comer menos e melhor.

As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again".

Ah, me lava!

Toxic - Yael Naim

Last year, the Apple iPhone was the #1 Most Memorable New Product. This year Apple has another product hoping to claim the crown – the Macbook Air. There is one major factor hindering the Air’s chances of being the Most Memorable Product—its early first quarter release. The Air has all of the makings of a winner, from a strong television advertising campaign to media, blogger and word of mouth buzz. But will there be enough buzz to continue throughout 2008?

The Macbook Air launch was accompanied by a unique commercial, which showcased the thin quality of the notebook, while effectively sticking to Apple’s creative standards. In the commercial, a hand carefully unthreads a manila envelope and reaches inside to pull out the Macbook Air. In the background is the song "New Soul" by Yael Naïm, one of the most popular songs of the year. The commercial helped Apple build buzz through the internet, including a series of parody videos on YouTube, where users pull different things out of similar manila envelopes. Even though the videos are sometimes showing the Air in a negative light, the response still builds the brand and product awareness.

According to some online sources , the Air sold well, but was not a blockbuster register ringer. If this computer was released by anyone other than Apple, would there have been as much buzz?

Let’s look at another computer related launch. In 2007, Windows Vista was #2 on the Most Memorable list, even though sales were low, and reviews were pretty harsh. Why? Because Microsoft is such an enormous brand, the media loves to talk about them. Apple is no different. The Macbook Air launched with a catchy commercial, a nearly untouchable brand name, and millions of dollars of marketing and advertising. Plus it’s been positioned as the most environmentally friendly of all Apple notebooks, thus creating a storm of buzz. Without the early release, we think Apple could have been looking for a shot at the #1 spot again.

As I said, timing will be the only reason the Macbook Air does not become a Most Memorable Product. With what you know about launches, what spot do you think the Macbook will command?

New Soul - Yael Naim

I'm a new soul
I came to this strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit bout how to give and take
But since I came here, felt the joy and the fear
Finding myself making every possible mistake

La, la, la, la
La, la, la, la

See I'm a young soul in this very strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit bout what is true and fake
But why all this hate? try to communicate
Finding trust and love is not always easy to make

La, la, la, la
La, la, la, la

This is a happy end
Cause you don't understand
Everything you have done
Why's everything so wrong

This is a happy end
Come and give me your hand
I'll take you far away

FIJI / SANTOGOLD / MADNESS / DAS POP / THE KILLS / THE GOSSIP
I have had the good fortune to have be

FIJI / SANTOGOLD / MADNESS / DAS POP / THE KILLS / THE GOSSIP

I have had the good fortune to have been invited to day 5 and 7 of the Montreux Jazz Festival, Miles Davis Hall, to see 6 bands play. Of course being there one gets the itch to go see Al Jarreau, Alicia Keys, Babyshambles, Camille, Chaka Khan, Erykah Badu, Gilberto Gil, Gnarls Barkley, Herbie Hancock, Interpol, Joan Baez, Joao Bosco, Joe Jackson, K. D. Lang, Katie Melua, Leeny Kravitz, Leonard Cohen, Melody Gardot, Milton Nascimento and Trio Jobim, N.E.R.D., Patty Austin, Paul Simon, Quincy Jones, Roberta Flack, Sheryl Crow, Sylford Walker, The Racounteurs, Tower of Power, Travis, Yael Naim and many more... all who played there this year.

But it is something of an elite festival. Just to get to it's idyllic location isn't a peace of cake. Finding a place to stay is probably not only difficult but expensive and tickets are always sold out within an hour of being released. What's more, for some acts 100 tickets are sold at a time on location months before, so just to get tickets you need to be in Montreux, or have a buddy there who is willing to stand in line for hours. Which is o.k. actually in my book. It is an opportunity for the locals to bring who they want to hear play for them in their own private festival. That's cool, and it's cool that they are so into culture to the point of putting plenty of their money there 42 years in a row.

Here's the difference between Montreux and say, Roskilde. Both are great festivals. In Roskilde you pay 300 USD to get in and see all the acts you want, all week. But you have to accept that there may be 60,000 people waiting to see some of the same artist you want to see. But that's great, it's those 60,000 paying visitors who make it possible to bring such acts. At Montreux you have to pretty much pay for each act you want to see. So if I go see The Kills, I'm one of 1000 people in the hall and can basically 5 minutes before the start of the show walk right up to the stage and place myself within 2 meters of the artist, so it's a much more private and exclusive show. After the show you can go down to Henry's and find Gnarls Barkley sitting at the pub. Prince who played there last year, after his show at the Stravinsky Auditorium showed up at the Jazz Cafe (a stage for free performances) and played an hour and a half for an unpaying overjoyed audience. Joan Baez this year picked up some street musicians from Kenya she saw playing on her way to the hotel the day of her show and invited them to close her concert, where the stage security was removed and anyone who wanted was invited to go up on stage and join her dancing to inspirational Kenyan percussion. But you have to pay for those luxuries, or in my case, you have to have friends who will pay for those luxuries for you.

Now to the music. I was basically unfamiliar with all of the acts I saw. But that is what I love about Festivals, discovering tons of things you've never heard of, getting inspired anew.
Fiji is a disco glam rock trio from Switzerland which uses drum/bass/keyboard tracks on stage which their wonderful singer Simone sings to. It sounded very house to me, more then 70's disco or 80's which they make a lot of reference to. I guess because of the sounds and quality of production. The glam bit was very apparent in the clothing and make-up, which looked very funny on the bassist, but suited Simone wonderfully, who throughout the show took off more and more glittering layers, which the audience reacted to very enthusiastically. They had a mannequin on stage that reminded me very much of Doris, the mannequin I had for the last 3 years. But they unfortunately didn't really make much use of her in the show. The music was good and Simone's energy was wonderful.
[caption id="attachment_82" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Fiji plays at the 2008 Montreux Jazz Festival, Miles Davis Hall."][/caption]

Santogold was a very interesting act. New Wave, Dub, Pshycobility, whatever that adds up to. Basically Dub beats to a Rockabily type Brooklinized singing. The concert started to a DJ mixing beats and tunes which was fantastic. That is the kind of organic musicality I love in live performance. But then when Santogold came on it lost that dynamism as she sang to prerecorded tracks. The coolest bit with the show was her two background singers who stood in their dark glasses totally expressionless, except for moments of extatic dancing, where they gave 100%. Her attitude and the beats of music got the crowd dancing and enjoying the cool party atmosphere they created.
[caption id="attachment_84" align="alignnone" width="400" caption="One of Santogold\'s cool background singers and her DJ."][/caption]

Madness were the best band of the first night. It's basically a bunch of (10, I counted) older men dressed in business attire playing great ska, rock, cabaret music. The singer has a very unique voice, though his range is not so amazing, he uses it well. Go to their MySpace and listen to Baggy Trousers and NW5 to get an idea of their music. The song I actually most enjoyed during the show was a song where the singer doesn't sing at all, but just shouts the line "One Step Beyond" from time to time. The crowd loved it and yelled along like mad (also on their myspace). I guess it is just their total unexpected craziness and the fact that they are very tight band that makes it all work so well. A great band to see live. I'm not sure I would go out and by a CD, although it could be great music to have for one of Pedram's wild parties.

Night 2...

Das Pop to begin with has a great band name. I love it. They are from Belgium where I stopped over on my way here and had some wonderful chocolate. Mmm... In any case they are a great Pop/Indie band. Great tunes, simple music, great energy. Very tight, lots of innocent attitude, a youthful spirit and chaos that inspires. They had the drummer right on the edge of the stage with his set turned 45 degrees, so that he was as present as the other 4. Great idea. The singer ran back and forth from a keyboard which added a nice dynamic to what otherwise can become a simple soundscape of drums/bass/guitar.

The Kills was the best band of the second night. This raw bluesy punk duo are really a sight to see. The concept reminds me of the White Stripes with a simple blues foundation and a greatly varied punk sound scape of songs built over that. But this band distinguishes themselves because their approach and charisma is much more raw and erotic. The tension Alison creates as she comes out in her leopard jacket and struts in circles is very animalistic and very attractive I must say. She's in your face sexual as good rockn' roll tends to be. Loved Jamie's hat too, very Clockwork Orange. The songs are strong but possibly a bit to distorted as by the end, everything blends into a soup of memory, sounding a bit too alike. Great energy, incredible presence, they had me captivated the entire show. Go to their MySpace and check out Last Day of Magic and Love is a Deserter.

I didn't know if you could bring a camera to the show, so the first night we took pictures on Xavier's pocket camera. At the entrance was a very clear sign forbidding 35 mm camera's so the second night I ventured to try their security check and got by them for all three shows. Specially got good pictures of this show so I'll post a few.

The Gossip was also very good. Great music to dance to. Beth, the singer reminds me of a blend of Mamma Cass and Janis Joplin, and that's an honor, both women with huge voices and incredible presence. Her voice is not of that caliber yet, but getting there. The whole band are excellent musicians and have great attitude. On their festival description they write: "We started a band 'cause we were bored. Our mission is to make you dance, and if you're not gonna dance, just stay at home and listen to the oldies station." I very much like bands with a woman at the drums, I find it very sexy, very powerful, very rock n' roll. Their best stuff is not on their Myspace though, so check out Eyes Open on Youtube or this live version which feels so 60's, or Jealous Girl. This concert was very popular, so we decided to enjoy it from farther back and I was dancing away as most everyone else.

Cheesy title. At least it sounded better than the lame old 'I'm back!' or 'I'm alive!'. After some time, the girl who stares at cactus has trouble getting back into the shwwing of things in the blogosphere.

Hence she decided what she does best. Youtube. Yael Naim. Talented French/Israeli singer/songwriter. She even did her own rendition on Britney Spears' Toxic. That not really my cup of tea, but eh perhaps guys would find the song a turn-on? I dunno. Personally, I love her French take on Paris (click to listen) better. :-)

One of Yael Naim's English songs titled New Soul was featured in the MacBook Air ad which, btw should explain that persistent déjà vu lalala ringing in your head. Can be quite addictive I tell u. So enjoy the video and have a good weekend.

Its interesting how the mundane and ordinary can seem incredible when in a different context. My first weekend in NYC wasn't filled with more near-death experiences or any insane events. Yet, it was still awesome - unlike any weekend in Oregon. Sure, the setting is still new and I'm on the wrong coast, so its to be expected that I would have an awesome time exploring my surroundings. Nonetheless, here is the short, sweet, but obligatory update for the folks back home:

I've walked more this weekend than I have in a long time. All afternoon-to-night on Friday, and all day Saturday too.

I walked across the Williamsburg bridge.

I sipped home-grown brew at the Brooklyn Brewery.

I nearly got hit by over 1,000 skateboarders in the middle of 'Go Skateboarding Day'

I ate Chipotle only once.

I saw Yael Naim perform live at Summerstage in Central Park. (you may recognize her from the Apple ads)

I went to P.S.1 (an extension of MoMA) for their Summer Opening Celebration and witnessed some pretty incredible exhibits.

I saw my first firefly since I was a small kid visiting relatives in Pennsylvania maybe 8+ years ago.

The best part was that I was able to experience all these things with friends from work or from home!

Pics from this weekend:

Det är fläskigt, det är oktavhöjningar och Natacha Atlas röst som glider oroväckande mellan skalorna och vibratot som en iskall förebråelse i refrängen: "it's a man's, man's, man's world - but it wouldn't be nothing without a woman or a girl...".

Here are five pop songs, both old and new, that feature real instrumentation in a prominent role - i.e. they don't sound like the cookie-cutter, over-produced, synth-laden, sugar pop that permeates the airwaves at times. (Whilst you will find synths and electronic instrumentation in some of these songs, the key criteria is that their primary instrumentation is performed by a musician rather than programmed.)

Paolo Nutini - New Shoes

Who he is: a scottish singer-songwriter (father is of italian descent) who was discovered by his manager when he won a chance to sing a few songs onstage to stand in for a tardy David Sneddon. [Paolo on Wikipedia]

Why I like it: bouncy, jangly acoustic pop with a clappy head-bopping beat - what's not to like? xD Paolo's voice is kinda soulful in a folky way imho and he may not have the deepest story to tell xD but it's interesting enough on the first listen :).

Obligatory Cover: Paolo sings Amy Winehouse's "Rehab" - features a slideshow of Paolo's disturbing prettiness (disturbing for a macho paragon of manliness like myself - girlies (and you, Tim) might like it...)

Alphabeat - Fascination

Who they are: a Danish pop band with an 80s retro pop sound. The Spice Girls asked them to open on their 2007-8 reunion world tour but Alphabeat declined. [Alphabeat on Wikipedia]

What I like about it: The voices of the male and female leads (Anders and Stine) work together well and the chorus is driving and muscly in its own poppy sort of way. Plus there's a definite contemporary air about the song in spite of the very 80s pop sound.

Obligatory Mash-Up: Destiny's Child vs. Alphabeat - Fascination Woman

A-Ha - Minor Earth Major Sky

Who they are: norwegian 80s pop icons - everybody's heard "Take On Me", right? [A-Ha on Wikipedia]

Why I like it: The rolling bass line gets your head bopping and Morten sings in an unusual mode for a pop song which gives the tune a vaguely exotic flavour.

This track is from their 2000 "comeback" album of the same name. I read a review at the time (which I thought was by Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic.com but I can't find it now...) that convinced me to check it out. Whoever the reviewer was they claimed that the album showed A-Ha sticking to pop but bringing it into the adult contemporary realm - pop for adults. I have to agree - there are some very good songs on the album that have the catchiness of radio-friendly pop but a little more longevity than the average 3 minute flash in the pan single due to A-Ha's seemingly mellower and more grounded approach.

Honourable mention: Another song from the same album - Velvet - is sweetly smooth and the video's worth seeing for the simple fact that you don't often see a pop video that hints at necrophilia... O_o

Obligatory Mash-Up: A-Ha vs Royksopp - What Else Is An Early Morning? - fellow norwegians melanchol each other out - Royksopp's awesome surreal video helps :)

Cliff Richard - Devil Woman

Who he is: He's 67 as of the date of this post - and he's the only artist other than Elvis to make it into the UK singles charts for every decade of its existence (1950s - 2000). [Cliff on Wikipedia]

What I like about it: Yes, he's old - he's very old... and so is this song - but the chords and melody in the verse are immediately catchy - Cliff could write some tunes, man! xD If someone doesn't cover this soon I'm going to have to do it...

Obligatory Obscure Cover: Cradle Of Filth actually recorded a version of this song... Since there's no official video some comedian edited a concert appearance by Cliff over it xD.

Yael Naim - New Soul

Who she is: a french-israeli singer-songwriter - she's the first Israeli solo artist to have a top ten hit in the US. [Yael on Wikipedia]

Why I like it: quite high profile as it was used to launch the MacBook Air but the song is ... errr... 'airy', fresh and upbeat anyway. Apparently Steve Jobs himself picked her song for the campaign.

I love to know what's good in pop but I can't stand listening to the radio so if you know of anything good (especially if you think it should be on a list like this xD) please let me know in the Comments!

Dar unele lucruri...mi-as dori sa fie sigure.

E penultima joi in care mai stau in Iasi.

Mare beneficiu :))

Totul e relativ in viata, dragii mei, azi e alb, maine e negru...sa ne bucuram asadar de zilele in care situatia e gri :)

Fica, portanto, a dica!
:D

I could learn a bit 'bout how to give and take.
But since I came here felt the joy and the fear
Finding myself making every possible mistake"

The 5 best covers of Britney Spears' "Toxic"

There are so many versions of Britney’s “Toxic” that it’s hard to keep up xD

There are so many versions of Britney's "Toxic" that it's hard to keep up xD All of which is a testament to the talented Cathy Dennis' song writing skills (she of the Kylie comeback fame).

Whatever you think of Britney and the pop genre in general, "Toxic" is a great song with a sexy melody over a darkly seductive minor chord progression and a lot of talented musicians know it.

These, in my opinion, are 5 of the best 'reworkings' of Cathy Dennis' great tune.

Download the Nickel Creek version guitar tab at the bottom

1. Stevie Ann

First up is Dutch Songstress Stevie Ann's soulful acoustic reimagining. She's changed the chords somewhat but retained the general tune and added her own emotional power to the vocal performance.

2. Fork

Freaky Fins Fork do a great a cappella version of the song. They create the instrumentation with their voices in an impressive and engaging way.

3. Yael Naim

French-Israeli MacBook Air tune-pimper Yael Naim puts her own stamp on the song with a heartfelt piano version of similar sentiment to Stevie Ann's.

4. Mark Ronson

Retro Funk Producer Mark Ronson puts his signature jazzifunkified spin on the proceedings.

5. Nickel Creek

And finally, this folky/bluegrass version by acoustic music trio Nickel Creek is my favourite (the sound and video is of a poor quality but it's good enough to get the idea :). Chris Thile's performance antics are the icing on the cake xD.

Honourable Mentions

There are a couple of surprisingly effective mash-ups too:

Linkin Park's "Faint" - takes a brutalising; the way these guys copulate with the hip hop fraternity this mix could be more prophetic than humorous - after all, they'd be only two degrees away from hip hop legend Timbaland if they partnered with Britters... xD

B-52's "Love Shack" - against all odds (one's a kitschy, alt-pop throwback - the other's a high-octane, over-produced pop epic) the two songs work together remarkably well! This one's high on my list of favourite mash-ups :).
