if there is anything that makes my heart do a thousand little somersaults , that would be two things - chanel and new york. sure louis vuitton can sometimes make me go crazy but chanel.

oh chanel. OH OH OH CHANEL.

i've always loved chanel even as a little girl - coco chanel's feisty persona and style captured much of my childhood fashion fantasies - she was spunky and fierce and a little bit of a tomboy but feminine to the core, much like my other idol madonna (also, a leo like myself and coco). and well, new york is my spiritual home. but to combine the two? that's christmas in october!

so naturally, i was beyond excited to read about this -

"Called Mobile Art, the structure itself was designed by the renowned London architect Zaha Hadid and will occupy the Rumsey Playfield, midpark at 70th Street, from Oct. 20 to Nov. 9. ......Chanel, the fashion brand, commissioned Ms. Hadid to create the traveling structure to house works by about 15 hot contemporary artists. Each was asked to create a work that was at least in part inspired by Chanel’s classic 2.55 quilted-style chain handbag, so named because it was first issued in February 1955."

ahh art after my own heart :)

This unassuming former tea pavilion, considered an institution by contemporary art lovers, is situated in Kensington Gardens and a stone’s throw from Royal Albert Hall and Kensington Palace. The journey to the Serpentine itself is an enchanting roam through Hyde Park and past the Serpentine river. Run by the relentlessly energetic and enigmatic Julia Peyton-Jones and Hans Ulrich Obrist, the Serpentine has evolved into more than just a showcase for artists such as Bridget Riley, Ellsworth Kelly, Richard Prince and Cindy Sherman. The gallery runs diverse education programmes, seminars, exhibitions, architecture and public programmes attracting over 750,000 visitors yearly and is staging the next instalment of an innovative exhibition of Chinese artists in collaboration with the Battersea Power Station.
Summer time is when the Serpentine Gallery comes alive. Aside from being a home for the arts, every summer, the gallery holds court to a summer pavilion and its annual summer party frequented by the likes of Kate Moss, Pierce Brosnan, Elle McPherson and Kiera Knightley. The pavilion is commissioned yearly by the gallery and created by a different architect each year, including Zaha Hadid, Toyo Ito, Rem Koolhas and Olafur Eliasson & Cecil Balmond’s latest collaboration. Each pavilion plays summer host to gallery talks, black-tie functions and Hans Ulrich’s 24-hour experimental marathon events. This very unique gallery thrives in building the connection between the art and its public, creating projects and events that help bridge the understanding and relationship between the two.

Saatchi Gallery

Exhibiting works by mostly new and unknown artists, the Saatchi gallery is seen by many as a launching pad for fresh faces entering the scene. Opened by Charles Saatchi, a former advertising executive, the gallery was originally established to showcase his extensive art collection. When Saatchi first launched his gallery in 1985, contemporary art only attracted a select audience. Twenty years later, the Saatchi gallery welcomes over 600,000 visitors a year and is perhaps the largest private gallery of contemporary art in the world.
Moving from the grandiose South Bank location to Chelsea’s equally expansive Duke of York’s HQ which opens this summer, the gallery presents both British and international artists, both the established as well as the unseen, introducing novel and revolutionary art that has influenced the way contemporary art is viewed in Britain. Saatchi cemented his reputation in the contemporary scene as a patron to Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and other Young British Artists. The diverse range of artists shown at the gallery, which also include Julian Schnabel, Chris Ofili on its list of luminaries, have never failed to bring forth media controversy due to the rebellious nature and content of the pieces and Saatchi’s unbowing stance to protect the freedom of expression for the artists he represents.
The Saatchi gallery thrives on the unfamiliar, the unidentified, the unseen and unheard of – of the new forms of art being born every day. It is a gallery that understands how the power of debate can raise the public’s consciousness of what contemporary art means to them as individuals.
True to character, this year Saatchi is taking yet another huge risk and leap of faith by opening his new Chelsea gallery with The Revolution Continues: New Chinese Art, an exhibition of works by contemporary Chinese artists whose names would not be recognized by the public. This year, Saatchi aims to reach a wider audience through the elimination of entry fees that was previously implemented in his South Bank gallery.

By Joyce Teo

PROPERTY giant CapitaLand has unveiled the 'branded' upmarket designs for a $3 billion residential project in Farrer Road that it aims to launch next year.

The as-yet-unnamed condominium boasts a series of sensuous lines that are not commonly seen in residential projects in Singapore, while the curving towers give an ultra-modern feel without the harsh edges present on many blocks.

It is all very much in the recognised style of architect Zaha Hadid, the first female recipient of the coveted Pritzker Architecture Prize.

This is her first condo project in Singapore but she has designed two bungalows for niche developer Elevation Developments.

Past Pritzker Architecture Prize winners include Mr Frank Gehry, Sir Norman Foster and Mr Rem Koolhaas.

The seven 36-storey blocks on the sprawling 838,488 sq ft site will hold about 1,500 homes. There will also be six pairs of unique semi-detached houses.

CapitaLand is developing the 99-year leasehold plot with three partners. Hotel Properties and a Morgan Stanley Real Estate fund will each hold 22.5 per cent, while Wachovia Development will take 20 per cent.

These parties, which borrowed a whopping $1.996 billion for the ambitious project, yesterday held a signing ceremony for the loan with their bankers at the Four Seasons Hotel.

It is the largest syndicated residential property development loan ever arranged in Singapore and comes amid a slow housing scene and tight credit markets.

CapitaLand said the deal comprises a $1.362 billion term loan, $500 million of revolving credit and $133.9 million in bank guarantees.

The collective sale deal for the former Farrer Court condo site was inked in June last year at $1.338 billion, or up to $783 per sq ft (psf) of potential gross floor area.

Ms Patricia Chia, chief executive of CapitaLand Residential Singapore, said the project's break- even cost is around $1,350 psf to $1,450 psf.

The condo will be launched in the first half of next year.

Developers generally see no need to hurry given the slow property sector, falling share markets and continuing bad news from the United States.

CapitaLand chief executive Liew Mun Leong said at the signing ceremony that the past few months have been challenging, but the business world must go on, notwithstanding the current economic turbulence in the US.

He said bankers, developers, businesses and potential partners could come together to exploit opportunities that increase during bad times.

Mr Liew added later: 'Sentiment has been affected in the US, but I think the fundamentals in Asia - in terms of economic growth, the demand, urbanisation - are still very strong.'

Renowned architect Zaha Hadid behind their design; project to be launched in 2009

PROPERTY giant CapitaLand has unveiled the 'branded' upmarket designs for a $3 billion residential project in Farrer Road that it aims to launch next year.

UNIQUE DESIGN: The as-yet-unnamed condo's 36-storey towers will feature a series of sensuous lines not commonly seen in residential developments in Singapore.

WHEN 31-year-old Farrer Court is demolished over the coming months, its replacement will be a “curvaceous” condominium that is set to dominate the skyline of District 10 and clock several firsts.

Giving the media a sneak peek yesterday, a CapitaLand-led consortium gave hints of how it planned to transform the site of Singapore’s biggest-ever en bloc sale.

In a precinct made up largely of landed homes and low- to mid-rise buildings, the upcoming 99-year leasehold project will comprise seven towers, which will each reach a height of 36 storeys. There will be a total of 1,500 homes, including 32 penthouses and 12 garden villas.

The condominium, yet to be named, will be launched in the first half of next year and is estimated to cost $3 billion to build, said CapitaLand Group chief executive Liew Mun Leong. The breakeven price ranges from $1,350 to $1,450 per square foot.

Unite pricing will be set closer to the launch, “but it will be affordable and we can make money”, said Mr Liew. He was confident that the project would find takers as en bloc sellers still need homes.

He said: “I am not worried about the economic downturn in the United States. Business must still go on.”

Behind the Farrer design is Pritzker ArchitecturePrize-winner Zaha Hadid, the first woman to clinch the architecture world’s equivalent of the Nobel Prize and the one who drafted the masterplan for the Buona Vista science hub, one-north. This will be her first condominium contract here.

“Zaha is very famous for her ‘sensuous architectural silhouettes’, whatever that means,” straight-talking Mr Liew said to laughter all round. “It just means curves to me.”

Later at the briefing, Mr Liew again had the audience in stitches when he replied to a question on how the consortium persuaded Ms Zaha to take up the job.

“It started with Mr Ong Beng Seng having a relationship - I mean …” Mr Liew paused abruptly as the room erupted with laughter. “… Having a good working relationship with Ms Zaha, because all these require personal relationships.”

Mr Ong heads Hotel Properties Limited (HPL), which is the number-two shareholder of the consortium after CapitaLand.

Mr Liew was addressing business partners, lawyers and senior executives from the 10 banks that have sewn up a loan of $1.996 billion, the largest ever syndicated residential property development loan arranged here.

The funds will be used to cover some of the construction costs - which are estimated to total $3 billion - and to partly finance the cost of the site, which has a maximum gross floor area of 2.35 million square feet.

Last year, CapitaLand and its three partners - HPL, Morgan Stanley Real Estate Special Situations Fund III and Wachovia Development Corporation - agreed to pay$1.34 billion to buy Farrer Court.

It was the biggest collective sale in local history and made 618 homeowners instant millionaires, as each unit fetched an average of $2.15 million.

The en bloc sellers of Farrer Court will be invited to a preview of the new condominium. “But there will be no special price for them,” said CapitaLand Residential Singapore chief Patricia Chia.

So here's my plan. I've so far taken a slightly haphazard approach to logging IBA projects (see original IBA post here), but have now begun the legwork of getting as many books as I could carry from the Berlin TU library and collating a database. I'm starting two separate lists, Neubau and Altbau, and will gradually migrate the links and other info from my old post. The separate pages for individual projects will remain and be expanded.

'Why bother at all?' you might ask. Simply because

a) when I was looking for this information on the web, it wasn't there, and

b) I'm a nerd, and we are only ever happy when we have a vast list-based project to be getting on with.

The list will have little on it to begin with, but do email me (jim_hudson33@yahoo.co.uk) if you're looking for specific material - I'm probably planning to go there with a camera if I haven't already...

By way of overview, the International Bauaustelling (IBA) 1987 was divided into Neubau (new building) under Josef Paul Kleihues and Altbau (yes, old building) under Hardt-Waltherr Hämer. The nomenclature is not strict however; 'Altbau' projects, mainly in the eastern Kreuzberg district known as SO36, have many elements of newbuild, but usually integrated into existing street blocks. 'Neubau' generally applies to the larger scale freestanding construction.

The Neubau projects were in four geographical areas; Southern Tiergarten (the vast majority), Prager Platz, and Tegel Harbour. I've listed the projects firstly by their 'Block number', which I assume was an allocation system of the IBA's.

Southern Friedrichstadt

Block 1, between Kothener strasse, Bernberger Strasse and Dessauer Strasse. Perhaps its most notable building is O M Ungers contribution, which I've written a bit about here.

Block 2, on Dessauer Srasse 34-40, Stresemannstrasse 105-109, Bernberger Strasse 6-9. Most notable for Zaha Hadid's residential building on Dessauer Strasse, page here.

Block 3, on Wilhelmstrasse. This is actually the Topography of Terror site, and must have become part of the IBA simply because its design competition was concurrent. The competition scheme in question was not the current one, or its aborted-during-construction Peter Zumthor predecessor, but a 'grid of trees' design by Wenzel, Lang and Wettbewerbsentwurf.

Block 4, bounded by Kochstrasse, Wilhelmstrasse, Zimmerstrasse and Friedrichstrasse. It includes Rem Koolhaas/OMA's block on Friedrichstrasse (see page here) and, in my opinion, the most impressive enclosed courtyard of the Neubau (see page here).

Block 6, bounded by Dessauer Strasse and Bernberger Strasse. Notable because of its unusual biological water waste disposal system - some images and comments here.

Southern Tiergarten

Block 189 - Known as 'Rauchstrasse', bounded by Thomas-Dehler-Strasse, Drakestrasse, Stulerstrsse and Rauchstrasse. Masterplan of whole block by Rob Krier. Separate page here for this, although I feel I missed some of this, so a return visit due...

Surprise! One of my favourite architects designed this year Serpentine Summer Pavillion!
There are far too many reason to go visit London not only for its historical beauty but for its long tradition of experience in contempotary experimentation. It is extremely impressive the amount of projects and events that have a huge impact not only on the experts gravitating around art in general but capable to attract even unexperienced amateur (as well as unaware turists). Big projects and extremely higt quality to please very different tastes.
The projects for an external pavillion at the Serpentine, in the heart of Hyde Park, date back in 2000 with Zaha Hadid first intervention.
Gehry's work, which will be opened on July 20, follows the projects by Olafur Eliasson and Kjetil Thorsen (August 24-November 11, 2007); Zaha Hadid (who also designed the year 2000 project) and Patrik Shumacher (July 12-July 21, 2007); Rem Koolhaas and Cecil Balmond (2006); Alvaro Siza, Eduardo Souto de Moura and Cecil Balmond (2005); Oscar Niemeyer (2003); Toyo Ito (2002), and Daniel Liebskind (2001).

Võibolla oligi tal õigus. Mul igatahes on ka sel korral pakkuda kahe Oskarile nomineerinud režissööri animatsioonid - Mark Osborne-i "More" (6:23) ja Chris Landreth-i "Bingo" (4:22).

2004 aastal õnnestus Mark Osbornel sellise tunnustuse osaliseks saada.

Mark Osborne sai stipendiumi John Simon Guggenheim Memoriaalfondilt.

Zaha Hadid is one of those A-list architects who has established their own design vocabulary. While Daniel Libeskind is about angles and intersections, and Frank Gehry is about curves and rhythm, Zaha Hadid is about uniformity and fluidity. Her buildings, essentially, look like they come straight out of a science fiction movie. They're space ships tethered to Earth.

While this is very cool to look at, Hadid's buildings can feel over-designed, as if she's making a sculpture instead of a habitable building. I'm not saying that Hadid is a bad architect, I find most of her forms interesting and spectacular, I'm just saying that Hadid can't do the same thing everywhere. I believe that Zaha Hadid will soon garner the criticisms that Libeskind is beginning to receive. After a while, the same forms become boring and lose their power.

Take, for example Hadid's extension to the Middle East Centre for St. Anthony's College in Oxford. The project is to connect two preexisting buildings, both of which are Victorian, brick structures, while incorporating a new library, reading room, lecture hall, and storage space. Hadid has come up with her typical spaceship-like form. A white, sleek tube that expands, contracts, and turns as it moves from one building to the next.

By itself, this is an awesome building. But in the context of Oxford, it is intrusive. In fact, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) has branded the design "awkward," which is it.

Of course, there are supporters of the design, and of Hadid in particular, and I understand their argument. Why should context necessarily mean using the same materials and forms? A non-brick, non-orthogonal building can be just as respectful to the context as a brick, orthogonal building. The assumption that only a building resembling those already there can work is incorrect. I agree with this viewpoint. After all, it was this limiting idea that killed Herzog & de Meuron's nine designs for the Blanton Museum at the University of Texas at Austin. Instead, a bland, unimaginative design was chosen, a decision that many in the local architecture community are still bitter about (including many of my professors).

But Hadid's design doesn't seem to respect the context. It almost looks like it's attacking the preexisting structures, trying to engulf it with a giant sucker-like hose. I do think that Zaha Hadid is a good architect, I just don't like this design in particular.

É verdade, no melhor estilo alien design!

Aguardem!
