Before you get started it may be interesting to know that Youtube works with Flash video (extension .flv). This does not necessarily make it harder to download or so, but if you plan to edit the video yourself, then flash video files present you with more problems than you probably want. Therefore, you'll find in this blog not only ways to download flash films, but also to convert them to more easy file formats, such as quicktime, avi, mpeg, and the likes.

If you have a lot of time, then maybe you can give some of the many plugins for Firefox a try: DownloadthemAll or Downloadhelper are only a few random suggestions. If your only objective is to get the videofilms to your hard drive so that you can watch them any time, then these plugins may already suffice for you: they give you what you want, i.e. the video flash files in flv-format. You can watch these files with this excellent FLV-player. Although this is is maybe already what you were looking for in the first place, fact is and remains that flv-files are not all that practical -not every pc has its native flv-player, for instance. Quicktime or avi is in that context a much more workable and popular format. But how on earth do you convert an flv-file to a Quicktime, avi or mpeg? MediaConvert is a free webservice that converts not only audio & video, but also textfiles to other file formats. The only thing you need is a browser -no extra software is required, you don't even have to register on their site. MediaConvert is fairly simple and easy: navigate to a file on your harddrive or enter the internet location of the doc you want to convert, select the in- and output format and click on submit. When the conversion is ready, you'll get a mail in your mailbox containing a download link. And that's it!

MediaConvert can handle files up to 150 Mb, and that is probably the only limit. Youconvertit can work with 8 audio formats (AAC, MP3, WAV,..) 72 image formats (JPG, GIF, PNG, …), 13 video formats (AVI, WMV, 3GP, MP4, …) and 46 other file formats (DOC, PDF, …). You can convert up to 5 files simultaneously. What sets Youconvertit.com apart from MediaConvert or Zamzar is that here, there's no ceiling to the file size. Another disadvantage, if you ask me, is Zamzar cannot handle files larger than 100 Mb. If you register, however, you can upload files up to 1 Gb -and that's a lot of bandwith if you ask me, but still, it is possible. Zamzar too can handle the most frequently used file formats. If you want to convert films from Youtube, then, in "Step 1", you'll first have to click on URL and paste the URL of the youtube film. Steps 2, 3 & 4 are foolproof.

If you want to download Youtubefilms, or if you have a quicktime movie that you'll have to convert to mp4, then these web services are perfect for you. Forget the Firefox plugins -these conversion services are not only much faster and easier, they also offer qualitative output. If you ask me, MediaConvert gets bronze; Zamzar & Youconvertit have much more eye candy and are a close match. Because they keep the converted files a bit longer, and because there's not limit to the file size, my personal gold medal goes to Youconvertit. But let's face it, Zamzar, how cool a name is that!

Do you have a video file you can't play on your windows computer? Here's a great and free web tool (in beta right now), called Zamzar. Convert it to the popular .wma from .avi. .mov, .vob and more. • Zamzar: ésta página te ofrece la posibilidad de subir los archivos o escribir la URL donde se encuentre, paso seguido, seleccionas el formato de salida del archivo y luego tu e-mail, el cual debe ser real, pues a éste se enviará un link donde podrás descargar el archivo ya convertido.

• YouConvertit: Ésta página funciona igual a Zamzar, introduces la URL del archivo a convertir o lo subes a la página, seleccionas el archivo de salida e ingresas tu correo electrónico.

• Media Convert: En ésta página el proceso para convertir tu archivo es distinto: Subes tu archivo a la página, el programa inmediatamente detecta el formato del archivo, seleccionas el formato de salida y luego presionas un pequeníto botón a la derecha que dice "OK". Inmediata mente el programa lo empieza a subir y a convertirlo, terminado el proceso te da el link para descargarlo. En caso de que el archivo a convertir sea una canción o un video, te vda la opción de cambiar ciertos parámetros de conversión, en caso de que seas una persona experta en éste tipo de cosas o al menos tengas conocimientos, si no, no pongas nada y conviértelo!

Video yang ada di youTube berformat FLV, Flash Video. Padahal di PC saya tidak ada FLV to mp3 converter software nya. Saya mencoba menggunakan online service http://vixy.net tetapi entah mengapa saya gagal menggunakan layanan web ini. Layanan serupa yang saya ingat adalah http://zamzar.com. zamzar melakukan pekerjaan untuk saya, walaupun dengan prosedur yang agak ribet dan tidak real time.

Zamzar, pertama kali mendownload file dari youTube ke server mereka, tentu saja setelah saya memasukan url video yang akan kita konversi, atau setelah saya meng upload file yang akan di konversi dari local folder, menentukan jenis file output proses dan memasukan alamat e mail kita. Setelah zamzar selesai mengkonversi, kita akan di email terkait dimana kita bisa mendownload file hasil konversi, sayangnya saya harus menunggu beberapa jam untuk menerima e mail ini. Maklumlah layanan gratis. Mungkin untuk layanan yang berbayar service nya lebih baik.

CONVERTERS/CREATORS
There are also converters that you may not know you had. The OpenOffice suite of applications have "export to PDF" features built right in. Microsoft Office 2007 also has an add-on that you can use to convert your office documents directly to PDF. If you would prefer not to install any software at all, the free Zamzar will convert your files to PDF (and other formats as well).

L'exemple de base il n'y a pas si longtemps c'était un fichier envoyé par mail en docx ou pptx, et vous n'avez que Microsoft Office 97 ou 2000 ou 2003 ou OpenOffice... depuis qu'il y a un eu le pack de compatibilité, ça va (un peu) mieux...et OpenOffice3 devrait gérer ces formats :D

Il existe aussi Works...c'est super embêtant. Mais l'exemple le plus gênant que j'ai eu à gérer, c'est des fichiers publisher...

Il fallait envoyer un fichier créé en Publisher (ne m'en voulez pas...ça commence à dater, d'ailleurs je n'ai plus Publisher sur mon ordinateur) à quelqu'un qui n'avait pas Publisher et qui voulait le modifier (sous Word de préférence).

Essayez d'enregister à partir de publisher votre document en .doc, vous verrez que ça ne ressemble à rien d'autres que le texte sans sa mise en page...

Pour juste consulter le fichier on peut toujours le convertir en pdf, mais pour le modifier ?

On peut acheter Publisher (mais là, je pense qu'on gâche un peu son argent...) ou s'en sortir avec le web 2.0 et les convertisseurs de fichiers en ligne.

Dans mon cas, j'en ai testé deux: Media Convert et Zamzar et le deuxième s'est révélé plus long mais plus efficace (moins de retouche). L'utilisation est simple, il n'y a qu'à suivre les étapes. L'avantage du premier, c'est qu'il gère une foule de format en entrée comme en sortie (document texte, audio, vidéo,données...).

Le défaut ? j'ai pas vu (mais pas testé non plus) de gestion des docx et autres formats Office2007.

My problem is that when I go to upload the videos.  The upload process runs all the way through to the final stage, which then times out.  This is very frustrating, and I am not sure why it happens, but it has happened on more than one occasion. Just when it seemed things on a daily worker properly I have been able to manage to upload the movie. at first I thought it might have been be movie type that was causing the problems but having converted movie into other formats I had the same timeout problems.  I also thought it might have been my connection speed.  However, on checking, it appeared not to be the case.

It got so frustrating, but I ended up using another service, Splashcast. Splashcast is pretty neat, because you can splice together, all manner of different presentations, including PowerPoints images and movies.  The test Splashcast movie I uploaded follows. The interface by which you upload your presentation can be a little confusing at times but once you get used to it is okay.  I have yet to try to merge different aspects together, but I will try soon. Here's one of my Splashcast movies, (oh and the embeds are easy too).

Along the way messing around with movies and thinking it might have been the format that was the cause of my TeacherTube problems I went looking for alternatives to convert my movies. As readers may recall I have been a long time advocate of Zamzar but the two extra popups that come with Zamzar plus the sometimes quite long time lags between uploads and the conversion meant alternatives were looking better. vconvert came highly recommended by some others and I was just about to give it a try when an email via oz-teachers popped up from Brenda Aynsley suggesting that she found the free download Any Video Convert to be a great option. A short download and install later I was away converting much quicker and with mor options than any of the online conversions. Hmm am I arguing against one of my conference premises that we hardly need any apps stored directly on our computers these days, I guess I am....

Thinking a little more about videos I recalled that I had read another email somewhere about a Firefox Add-on that I had tried but not really used in the past. A quick tour of the emails and I came across Download Helper which now sits nicely in my toolbar and alerts me with the spinning three ball icon when I am viewing a page that has media content in it. A click on the drop down arrow next to the balls enables me to download a copy of the media content for off-line viewing. Neat, now back to the TeacherTube problem.

Now you have to love this, the nice folk at TeacherTube are obviously out there checking the web for blog and other references to them and not only that but reading them too. Not long after I posted this post Jason, the CEO no less, posted a comment re this post that explains the problems I have been having and even better suggests that they are being actively addressed. Now that's service, (though maybe a suggestion for Jason that a note on the T/Tube site re potential problems over the past few months of their rapid growth might have saved me and possibly others a little bit of grief??). Great to see though that an initiative such as T/Tube aimed specifically at education is getting so much support that it is outgrowing its servers.

Here's what's on my list:

1. Driveway. Do you need to email people huge files. Does your mail server have a small limit, or your recipient's mail server stop at 5MB. Driveway let's you send files up to 500MB. Or send multiple files. You upload your file, it creates a link you can email out to anyone to your files. You also don't need to sign up to use the service. Or even enter your email address. It is a lifesaver if you (or your colleagues) do not have access to an FTP and need to send large files.

2. Google alerts. My first job after college was working in a PR firm. Everyday we logged into Lexis-Nexis to track our clients coverage, and the competitors coverage. I never knew how much this service cost, but it was expensive. Now every few months, I get an unsolicited call from a similar vendor. The vendors offers to track international coverage on me and my competitors. In each trial the service only terms up 2 or 3 items that I did not find via google alerts. They are typically in a language that doesn't use English characters. So use the Google Alerts to find news, blog posts or web pages that reference you, your company, your space or your competitors. You can schedule the alerts for any frequency. This is free and in beta like all google Services, but I find it works pretty well. Especially for the cost. :)

3. Meebo. Do you need to IM all of your friends across all the networks. Are you locked out of installing a new chat client on your computer? Try Meebo. Covers AOL, Yahoo, Gmail and MSN. And you can even embed it in your blog and chat with your visitors. (I did!)

4. Zamzar. Convert your files from one format to another. Have you ever been sent an open office doc or a tiff file you couldn't open. Do you not have word or excel installed on your computer? Do you need to make a quick PDF? Try Zamzar. A free online file conversion service. It covers the biggies: PDFs, Office, Open Office, images, audio and video. Amazing!

5. Free Conference Calls. Do you ever need to set up a conference call for lots of people, but you need a bridge? Are your corporate lines full (or non-existent). Try this service. Now that everyone has free unlimited long distance minutes, dialing a long distance number is no biggie, and Free Conference Call has been around forever doing just what the name says. You need to sign up, but after that, you'll have your own permanent number.

6. Zoom Info. Looking for info on a company or person? Zoom Info is basically a web info aggregator, but you might find the person you are looking for, or the company executives. It isn't as good as Linked In or Jigsaw, but you can find phone numbers, people and addresses without clicking around on their site, Google or the web. Or you can just see where you've been mentioned. :)

7. Linked In. I know every one knows about this one (maybe). But here is a great way to do a "background check" on people or find other people. See where they used to work, what their colleagues say or just answer questions to prove your thought leadership. It's like an industry association without the dues. Try to connect with your current and former coworkers and acquaintances and you never know, you might be less than 4 degrees away from that person you were looking for....

Super funktioniert auch Zamzar. Muss man allerdings ein bisschen Wartezeit einplanen. :)

I know how anoying it is when you get a file you cant open, and that happened to me today when I received a "docX" file from work. I stumbled upon Zamzar which is a great web service which will convert files from many file types to a long list of other file types, and all for free. The service worked great when converting my "docX" file to a simple "doc" file and boasts a long list of file types for documents, images, videos and even archives!

So Whats the catch?

• Ads (and plenty of them)
• Document is emailed to you shortly after conversion
• Converted file must be retrieved within 24 hours after conversion

Other than the points above, brilliant free service. Something like this should definately be integrated into Google Documents which currently lacks support for most of the files zamzar works with!

4. Pada step 3, masukan email anda, karena file hasil konversi akan dikirim ke email
5. Pada step 4, klik convert, dan tunggu proses yang sedang berlangsung

Apabila proses sudah selesai silahkan menunggu dan membuka inbox pada email karena file akan dikirim ke sana

Kelebihan dari cara ini adalah, kita bisa langsung mendownload sekaligus mengkonversi ke format pilihan kita tanpa perlu meng install aplikasi dalam pc/laptop kita. Dan tentu saja PC/Laptop kita tidak akan terbebani dengan pekerjaan mengkonversi ...
