Zippos marknadsföring riktar sig till stor del mot samlare. Flera nya modeller kommer ut varje år. Vissa av dem är väldigt dyra och fyller bara ett enda syfte: att locka samlaren. Efter att ha sålt över 400 miljoner tändare borde de veta vad de gör. Och visst finns det många snygga tändare att välja på, men som alltid stiger priset med smaken.

Clicks hemsida innehåller mycket bra material för samalaren, men för de som vill kunna komma åt all information krävs att du registrerar dig och blir medlem. Om du bara är lite nyfiken på vad Zippo har att erbjuda rekommenderar jag dig att ladda ned samlarguiden.

Okay, first nugget.

“People in the business are talking about it, gathering to watch it,” said Mary Warlick, chief executive at the One Club for Art and Copy, an organization in New York that honors creativity in advertising.

Really? WHERE THE HELL ARE THEY WATCHING IT? But I digress.

The club is presenting an exhibition intended to “bring back the real-life men and women” on whom “Mad Men” is based, Ms. Warlick said, like Mary Wells Lawrence, George Lois and David Ogilvy. The exhibition, at the Science, Industry and Business Library of the New York Public Library, runs from Tuesday through Sept. 26.

Emphasis mine. Cool as shit, right?

Much of the hoopla surrounding “Mad Men” is promoting either the DVDs or the start of the second season.
For example, Lionsgate is sponsoring the make-believe issue of Advertising Age, which comes out on Monday and takes the form of a 16-page ad section in the actual June 23 issue. The idea was the brainchild of Initiative, which is the Lionsgate media agency.

The ad supplement is designed to resemble how Advertising Age looked in 1960, when the first season of “Mad Men” is set. One highlight is an imaginary interview with the main character, a conflicted creative director named Don Draper. (Mr. Weiner provides his answers.)

“We worked very closely with Matthew Weiner on all of this so it has his touch,” said Anne Parducci, executive vice president for marketing at Lionsgate Home Entertainment in Santa Monica, Calif.

That is also why the maker of Zippo lighters, founded in 1932, became involved with the DVD release. Zippo supplied period lighters and advertising signs for the series, said Pat Grandy, marketing communications manager at the Zippo Manufacturing Company, to help convey how omnipresent smoking was in 1960.

That led Lionsgate to design a box for the DVD set shaped like a Zippo lighter. And that led Zippo to bring out two lighters with “Mad Men” logos, to be sold online and at the company headquarters in Bradford, Pa.

We knew the first part, we didn't know the second part. More cool!

Another nod to history comes from JWT, part of the WPP Group, which is buying a 10-second commercial that appears on the first disc in the DVD set.

The spot uses letters from the logos of JWT clients to spell the words “Mad Men” and concludes, “Making brands famous since 1864” — when the agency was known, as it was in the “Mad Men” days, as J. Walter Thompson.

Now to the title of this post. Ever read Preacher? It's a fucking book 'n' half and features in it a Zippo lighter given as a gift by John Wayne to the lead characters father during Vietnam. The lighter is engraved with the legend, 'Fuck Communism'. Since seeing this, I've been waiting for Zippo to get on board and produce said lighter. A few years ago I told this to a dude I knew, an impressionable kid. Next time I saw him he had bought himself a lighter and got it engraved with the legend in a fucking key cutting shop. The moral of this story is, if you want something cheapened, tell an idiot who thinks you're ace.

Poteva il Barone perdersi il più affidabile tester sulla salute della scena stoner doom di casa nostra? Ovviamente no: ed eccoci bellicosi e ansiosi alle soglie del Sinister Noise per l’"andata" dello Stoned Hand of Doom 4; ospiti d’eccezione i ciociari Godwatt Redemption, già autori di un ottimo demo, e i pescaresi Zippo, quelli di Ode to Maximum; a chiudere i sempre più iconici Doomraiser, non solo padroni di casa ma anima e cuore della scena romana.

L’attacco dei Godwatt non lascia niente al caso; sound massiccio, basso corposo, groove settantiano e un’attitudine a metà strada tra i Kyuss di Blues for the Red Sun e i Motorhead di Overkill. L’avvio è di quelli spartani e senza particolari smancerie; uno schiaffo di hard rock polveroso che fa muovere testa e piedi, supportato da un basso assolutamente sabbathiano, un drumming trascinante e una serie di riff da ricordare; insomma, i nostri non hanno avuto alcun problema nello scaldare un pubblico molto in linea con lo stile della band. Fanno inoltre ben sperare i pezzi che andranno a far parte del disco in preparazione, materiale che agiterà più di qualche testolina. Appena passato il rammarico per l’estrema brevità del set dei Godwatt , ecco presentarsi sul palco i cinque Zippo, sicuramente una delle migliori realtà italiane in ambito stoner. Crazy Forest è il primo tassello di un’esibizione molto variegata e multiforme, segno di come questi giovani rocker siano ormai dei musicisti capaci non solo di suonare ma anche di plasmare il rock, muovendosi in direzioni sempre diverse e imprevedibili. Ci vengono proposti alcuni pezzi nuovi dal disco in uscita ad ottobre, canzoni imperniate su un’ evidente influenza di matrice prog, sicuramente complesse e per certi versi spiazzanti, anche se purtroppo non aiutate dall’acustica “a due colonne” del locale; le tante sfumature che pur si intuiscono infatti non “escono” come dovrebbero. Nessun problema, sia chiaro, ma tanta curiosità per la svolta. Nel frattempo gli “accendini” pescaresi continuano a macinare note, Kid in the Desert, Tsunami Dust e la mastodontica The Elephant March infiammano un pubblico sempre più sudato ed euforico, segno di come Ode to Maximum, seppur autoprodotto, abbia lasciato il segno e sia stato un vero tormentone per la scena. Non possiamo che applaudire e fare un in bocca al lupo generale.

A questo punto sguinzagliano gli animali. Entrano i Doomraiser col loro carico di borchie, cuoio, puzzo di birra e watt; i volumi sono paurosi, così come l’immagine complessiva di questi cinque loschi figuri sul palco. Gli amplificatori tracimano autentico doom; lento, oppressivo e tribale. Qualche pezzo nuovo fa da contorno a quelli presenti su Lords of Mercy, vero manifesto di un sound ignorante e senza compromessi; The Age of Christ semina il panico in sala e gli effetti dell’alcol già segnano più di qualche “malcapitato”; la potenza, a tratti autoreferenziale, in certi frangenti diventa quasi insostenibile, trascinando il pubblico in un girone dantesco con tanto di zolfo e forconi. La cover ultra slow di Children of the Grave dei Sabbath, vera lapide della serata, va a chiudere la prima parte di un festival fin qui massacrante; ce ne andiamo con i timpani rotti ma già pronti per la sera dopo.

En nog heel wat andere dingen... Maar helaas, ik ken niemand die er woont of op vakantie is / gaat.... En dat vind ik echt heel erg jammer want door de dollarkoers kost alles geen drol maar om nou 40 eurie kwijt te zijn aan verzendkosten.... dat gaat me net te ver... Dus helaas... ik zal moeten wachten tot ik ooit zelf in Amerika ben dan maar.......

'Noem eens drie nummers van Pink Floyd', heb ik wel eens gevraagd op een moment dat we met een groep vrienden onze wekelijkse biertjes wegwerkten. Die uitdaging werd beantwoord met een ijzige stilte. Een andere generatie, zullen we maar zeggen. Ikzelf wist niet zo lang geleden ook nog maar weinig van een van de meest succesvolle bands allertijden. Natuurlijk, ik kende de grootheden Roger Waters en David Gilmour, de bekende nummers en de legendarische albums The Dark Side of the Moon en The Wall. Maar van de naam Syd Barrett had ik alleen vaag gehoord.

Toch is Syd Barrett aanwezig bij ieder optreden dat Roger Waters ook nu nog geeft. Zoals vorig jaar in Arnhem en afgelopen zondag in Landgraaf. Tijdens 'zijn' nummer, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, verschijnt zijn beeltenis groot op de schermen achter het podium. Zo wordt hij in leven gehouden, de voorman van de band tijdens de beginjaren tussen 1965 en 1968. Barrett was vernieuwend, zocht de muzikale grenzen op, ver voordat Pink Floyd monsterhits scoorde. Speelde gitaar met een zippo en creëerde een nieuw geluid, maar kon de roem niet aan. Onder invloed van drugs werd zijn gedrag onvoorspelbaar. Soms speelde hij niet, soms maar een enkel akkoord. You were caught in the crossfire of childhood en stardom, treffender kun je het niet zeggen. De vergelijking met Ian Curtis dringt zich op. De voorman van die andere invloedrijke band, een decennium later, over wiens leven Corbijn zo'n prachtige film maakte. Het cruciale verschil: Curtis maakte een einde aan zijn leven, Barrett leefde nog jaren een teruggetrokken bestaan. 

Over de laatste ontmoeting tussen Barrett en de overige leden van Pink Floyd gaan ontroerende verhalen. Trieste verhalen eigenlijk, maar tegelijk van die verhalen die de legende van een band bepalen. Het was in 1975, toen de band in de beroemde Abbey Road Studios werkte aan het album Wish You Were Here. Barrett kwam binnenlopen, net op het moment dat Shine On You Crazy Diamond - een nummer over hem - werd opgenomen. Hij was een stuk dikker geworden en had zijn haren en wenkbrauwen geschoren, waardoor zijn oud-collega's hem in eerste instantie niet herkenden. Toen ze realiseerden wie de man in de opnamestudio was, brak een aantal bandleden. Roger Waters had tranen in zijn ogen. 'Ik ook, denk ik', zei toetsenist Rick Wright in een BBC-documentaire uit 2001. En David Gilmour: 'Niemand herkende hem. Geschoren. Een geschoren kaalkop en zeer plomp.'

In 2006 overleed Syd Barrett, die toen al meer dan dertig jaar geen rockmuzikant meer was. Maar hij leeft door tijdens de concerten. Shine on, you crazy diamond!
